how did galby's army get wiped out in the spine? tell me what u think ppl.

i dont think there would be such a huge population of urgals in the spine. if there was, why didnt any attack eragon?

cuz, the Urgals would have gotten pwned by Saphira. And the Urgals arent organized, they were only organized becuz of Durza's magic. When Durza died, the Urgla clans fought amongst themselves, thats why the Varden won the battle of Farthern Dur, the Urgals hate each other.

whatever makes people scared of the spine, wolves,the urgals, brom,weather or they could have got lost. maybe, if they got lost in a section near duweldevarden the elves could have surprised them. maybe they got snowed down, starved or if it was winter, a snowfall

I believe that there is some unknown power or force that lives in the Spine and kills or harms those who they think are unworthy of passing through or evil. There could also be dangerous creatures and beats that live in the Spine that could have killed them, but considering how mysterious the Spine is I'm sticking to my original theory.

I think galby lost half his army in the spine due to the first eragon and his dragon, bid'daum are in there in hiding.

it mentions the name of the original eragons dragon in the books, at least once or twice, but not the dragon that settled a treaty with the elves

the problem with just about every one in this forum, including me, is that we look for a hidden meaning in everything. that the army was nearly wiped out might just be part of the story. so could a lot of things, CP's a good writer, but like with solembums prophecy, he gives you an idea of what to expect, but maybe not always.

I believe that galby lost half his army in the spine because the first eragonn and his dragon bid'daum are still hidden in there and killed half of galb's army. they are waiting for their time to come out of hiding and face galby himself.

Urgals and I'm sure they've encounted natural disaster as well.

remember everyone from carvahall came into contact with the following:

1)freezing cold tempertures

2)wild animals

3)no marked trails (easy to get lost)

well, someone has bound 2 have good equiptment in case of an emergence because there are rumors about the spine. then again, they might not believe the rumors. just a thought....

I think the remaining wild dragons or some form of dragons are in the spine. Eragon's survival was due to his innocence as well as Carvahall's survival. The only "bad" person in Carvahall, Sloan was gone by the time they entered the Spine. ERagon was left untouched because of his future as a rider. As to Bid'Duam's existance, when Eragon is learning about the history of the dragon riders, he is told by Brom I belive, a young elf named Eragon found the egg "and in the custom of the ancient language named it Bid'Duam." I think this is when Roran and Eragon travel to Carvahall to repair the tool.

ur spamming now, and yes i beleive that was when eragon questioned brom, when roran went into town. back to the spine and the army, if there were dragons there then galby would have tried to take control of them or kill them or would have guards posted to watch and see if they ever emerged to attack him. eragon could get them to help them if they exist, which might stop galby from existing, which might improve the existence of people trying to exist peacefully, then every ones existence is better. so if they exist it would be good.

Ok im pretty sure u guys r thinking of the wrong time galbys army got wiped out in the spine before eregon even got shapieria or for that matter before eregon was born. i think that galby sent his troops to kill selena, at morzans request when she ran off to have eragon.then broom out of love for selena went krazy and killed all the troops and morzan.

OR- they all died from the huge dragon that is really the spine

Its not BROOM, its BROM
Its not ALIESIA, its ALAGAESIA

And even with Rider strength, Brom cant have killed the whole army AND Morzan. And I dont really think the Spine looks like a dragon, more like a weird seahorse or something.

I've got the Eragon Deluxe Edition in my hands, and I'm scrutinizing the map right now... It looks like a really crooked arrow to me. Wouldn't it be something if it was actually an arrow pointing to the VoS?

That's a good theory, but then why didn't it ever go after Eragon? In the first book it said he was the only hunter near Carvahall that dared go very far into those mountains. I got the impression that if anyone else went in there, that they didn't come back out. Of course, there was Roran in Eldest when he was hiding from the Raz'ac. It could be something to do with the blood of kings Oromis told Eragon about. Either that or the soldiers could have gotten themselves killed by doing stupid things caused by superstition. (Guy hears a noise in the dark, takes off running, scares the others, they start running, until they run off a cliff or something.) That's how some buffalo hunters did it. They would spook the buffalo into running, and the poor creatures can't see 3ft in front of their face, and then drive them off a cliff. It was horrible and done just for the sake of a quick dollar.

Maybe they got attacked by spirts of dragon riders killed by the forsworn and they didn't attack Eragon because he was a dragon rider.

That's not a bad idea except for the fact that Roran wasn't a Rider when he went into the Spine, nor were the women and children and infirm of Carvahall when they were hiding there. Even Eragon wasn't always a Rider when he went into the Spine to hunt. That's why I think it has something to do with the blood of kings that Oromis told Eragon still flows through the veins of people in Carvahall and Therinsford.

galbys army was a threat, eragon wasnt if it was in the spine then its guardians or spells or whatever wouldn't have targeted a hunter that intended no harm and wasnt' close. and galby was evil. and i think that galbys army was wiped out before either brom or selena were ever in carvahall. that was my impressiong that itd happened maybe 50 years ago or somting

you guys, i also think you're thinking of the wrong army. the army that were talking about probably has nothing to do with the riders.(and brom!) i also think that it was because of king palancar. some sort of magic power that tends to destroy anything bearing the current king's emblem, in this case, his army. well, that and all the wolves, bears, etc.

Your thinking of the wrong king. You're thinking of king palencar. He died before Galbatorix was born, so his only grudge would be held against the Elves because he fought them. The King Galbatorix deposed was king Angrenost (sounds familiar, is it lord of the rings?) of the Brodding Kingdom.

However, I'm guessing they probably died of hunger in the forest, not being able to find their way out.

My second theory is that the grey folk inhabit the spine and slew all of Galbatrorix's men.

Although, there is one thing that doesn't make sense. If Galbatorix lost half his army (which, at full strength, is 16,000 men, not including conscripts), don't you think that someone would have stumbled across their bodies? I mean, if 8000 people are lying dead in a forest, don't you think Eragon would have stumbled across their bodies? Why would Galbatorix send his army south the spine? You'd end up in Kuasta. He was probably trying to get to Narda, to sail to Vroengard, to search the ruins. But the problem there is that then it was probably an elven or varden ambush of some sort. There's no sense sending an army through the spine unless you're trying to get across the sea. And the varden or elves don't want him returning to Vroengard.

Good point about the bodies. I thoroughly enjoy thinking of possible ways that the army could have gotten killed but, isn't it possible that Christopher Paolini just mentioned this to prove that the Spine was a place not many people came out of? And he possibly didn't think about what he was doing to his many fans in not being practical about where the bodies when? I mean gosh Mr. Paolioni thats really rude of you... lol ok just don't listen to me... i'm being a theory putter outer....

maybe the vault of souls is in the spine, and the army was sent to look for it. and then something that guards the vos killed them because he knew what they were after. the guardian didnt hurt eragon or roran because they werent after the vault.

Hm... True true... Perhaps the bodies were all decomposed? INCLUDING the bones. If i'm right, doesn't recomposed stuff act as nutrients for the trees? Which is prolly why there are so many of them. Just a thought.
