Post Twinns book 1: The Meeting
here is a rough draft of the prologue & chapter 1 in my "book"
tell me what you think

Prologue

A Kinevian woman was rushing, rushing through the woods. Tree branches and bushes tore at her dress and skin. A tall Kinevian man was following close behind, stopping every so often to shoot an arrow behind them.
The woman carried a large bundle in her hands wrapped in a soft cloth. She held it against her tightly as she ran.
They were closing on an elven village. The woman knew t that moment what she had to do. She quickened her pace and ran up to a home that had brightly colored flowers growing around it. She placed the bundle down on the covered porch and kissed it. She pulled two chains off of her neck and laid them gingerly on the cloth.
She shed a single tear, and then continued her run from the Wonkals chasing them.
The man saw what she had done. Nodded solemnly in silent agreement and ran beside her.
The next moment, a large group of Wonkals crashed through where they had been standing. They paused, and one of them stepped forward. He sniffed the air, and then grunted to the others and they continued their chase.
As they did, the elves that lived there cautiously came out of their houses.
One woman, who lived at the house surrounded by flowers, came out more cautiously than the others.
She had seen the woman put her bundle on her porch. She wondered if this was some kind of trickery, but having seen the Wonkals take chase after the couple she doubted it.
She peeked out her door and stepped out on her porch. She took her walking stick and poked the bundle. She stepped back with a startled gasp.
The bundle let out a shrill cry.

Chapter 1: The Beginning

Drania had just arisen from her sleep. She was in the forest, at a clearing where she had stopped last night. Drania was on a journey, a quest if you will. She was searching for her sister. For most, this would prove to be an easy task. But for Drania, it was much more difficult. See, her sister and herself had been separated some years ago when their Uncle had sold them to slavers. They stayed with the slavers for a week or so then they were sold to separate owners at an auction. Drania had been sold to a fat, lazy lord who made her help the other slaves clean his house. Last she had heard, her sister had been sold to a kindly couple to help care for their soon-to-be –born child. Drania sighed as she thought of all the awful years she had been forced to serve the fat Lord. But that was in the past. Drania had finally gotten up the courage to runaway from him. That was the best decision she had ever made, she decided. She stood up and looked around at her surroundings. She noticed a doe in the distance. Drania picked up her bow in anticipation of hunting it down. “That doe would make quite a few fine meals for myself” she thought. Then, suddenly the bushes behind the doe moved, and a fawn stepped out. Disappointed, Drania put her bow away. She would not hunt a mother deer; there were few enough animals in the forest as it was, thanks to the King’s men. Her brow furrowed as he dwelled on the thought. Drania then turned and rummaged through her pack, looking for something eat to break her evening fast. When she found nothing, she sighed and sat back on her haunches. She looked around and not seeing her falcon, whistled shrilly. A pure white falcon appeared in the trees above her head. She smiled, eyeing the falcon that had been her companion for some time now. Shaking her head, she stood and began packing her meager belonging. When she had finished, she stood, stretched and rolled her shoulders.
“Better get a move on it,” she thought, and began to walk along a well-worn path. As she walked she thought on her past…

As young children, Drania and her sister, Audraie, had been found on the doorstep of an elderly elf. They both had enchanted amulets around their necks, and strange markings on their arms. The elderly woman took them in despite the heeding of the other elderly elves. She had always been very kind, treating them as if the were blood relatives; But it wasn’t the same. They knew nothing of their parents. But as time went on, they realized that wasn’t as important as what they did know. That they were loved. They lived happily outside of an elven village, until one day the Elderly woman grew ill. The healers could do nothing to help her. She grew steadily worse every day. Drania and Audraie did their best to take care of her, till the inevitable happened. The elderly woman died. Deeply grieved, the girls did not now about the events about to take place. An unknown “Nephew” of the woman came to claim his inheritence. The people of the village insisted that the man take the girls as well. Disgusted, the man did as he was told, took the girls and left. But, as soon as he was a distance away from the village, he sold the girls to slavers…

A sudden noise shook Drania from her thoughts. She stopped walking and looked around, her deep green eyes searching the shadows. She took in a squirrel nibbling on some leaves, a bird above her singing, and a bear cub, about 10 feet away from her. Drania knew, where there is a bear cub, there is also a mama bear. She heard a roaring in the distance, “A mad mama bear by the sound of it”. She slowly backed away from the cub, trying not to draw attention to herself. She smiled and turned back to the path. She looked at the sun and noticed it was around noon. “I’ll stop soon and grab a rabbit or grouse for lunch.”
She walked on for another half hour or so and then stopped to look for game. She noticed a small rabbit nearby and took out her bow to hunt it. She caught it in one shot and then gathered some wood from nearby and made a fire. Cleaning the rabbit, she whistled to call her falcon. It came quickly and sat on a log nearby eyeing her catch greedily.
“I know your hungry Angel, here you go.” She said, tossing the bird a small piece of meat. She then took the rest of the rabbit, saving the scraps for Angel, and put it over the fire. She smelled the air eagerly; this would be the first meal for her since yesterday’s breakfast. She had been so impatient to get farther along on the road that she had walked non-stop till it was too dark to see. A few minutes later noticing that her rabbit was done, she took it off the spit and inhaled it’s scent. She took the first bite, relishing its flavor. It was a bit gamey, but satisfying. She quickly finished it off, tossing the bones aside for Angel to gnaw clean. Satisfied, she lay down on here back, enjoying a few moments of peace. She almost fell asleep, but woke herself in time. She stood and Angel took off.
She started down the path again. “Strange that I have not seen any other travelers on the road today. Probably just coincidence.”

She stopped again at the end of the day near a river. Going to the river to refill her empty canteen and get a drink, she caught a look at her reflection. She was completely filthy from head to toe & her hair was horrid. Grimacing, she decided that she would wash in the river since it was right there. She quickly stripped down to her undergarments and stepped gently into the river. As fast as she could, she thoroughly cleaned herself. Her hair was particularly hard to detangle. She laughed to herself as she thought, “Those travelers yesterday were right to look at you so strangely Drania” She got out and wrapped herself in her blanket and sat down by the fire. “I should be able to reach the next town by sundown. Maybe I can find some short-term work there.” Seeing that her blonde tresses were beginning to dry, she began running her fingers through them trying to detangle some of the knots that looked as if they had been there forever. Drania knew that she was considered beautiful, but she sometimes resented it. It made her draw too much unwanted attention to herself, sometimes when she wished to remain hidden. It was one of the reasons she tried to stick to the less-traveled roads.

Drania stood up and stretched. “I need to get some sleep if I want to be refreshed for tomorrow” she thought. She got dressed, and was just about to douse the fire when someone spoke behind her, “Would you mind waiting until I warmed up a bit before you douse that?” Startled, Drania dropped the skin of water she was about to douse the fire with. The skin burst s it was old and the water splattered everywhere. She turned around quickly to see who had spoken and saw an elderly, but strong looking man. He stood tall with gray hair and a neatly trimmed beard. She looked him over suspiciously, trying to decide if it would be wise to let him sit with her. Figuring it wouldn’t hurt to let him sit for a few moments she shrugged saying, “I don’t see why not.”
The old man sat down on a rock near the fire, “Thank you very much, I am chilled and weary from my journey.” He rubbed his hands together and held them close to the fire.
“I’m sorry about your water skin, can I offer my extra one as a replacement?”
“I don’t take charity,” Drania said gruffly
“Yes, but you do steal what is not your sometimes.” Seeing Drania blush he said, “Oh yes, I know the type. I was one myself once. But you do not wish to listen to the stories of an old man, so I won’t illustrate.” He looked at her keenly, and then said quietly. “You have great things in you girl, find them & you will go far.”
Drania snorted, nothing had ever been great about her. She looked back at the man, staring straight into his grey eyes. He seemed wise and knowing, as if he understood everything that had ever happened to her. She knew nothing about him, she had only met him moments ago, but she strangely felt as if she could trust him.
“Where are you headed may I ask?” she said, still looking in his deep grey eyes
“Nowhere in particular”
“Would it please you to travel with a lowly escaped slave girl?”
the man smiled brightly, “I can think of no one who’s company I would enjoy more.”
Drania can’t believe what she had just said. She was never so trusting. But what was said, was said. It could not be taken back so she figured she should make the best of it.
“Fine then, I’m sure you are just as weary as I so lets get some rest.”
He agreed and they both unrolled their blankets and lay down to sleep.
As weary as she was, Drania did not go to sleep right away. Instead she lay awake, thinking on her sister, fingering the amulet around her neck.
When she finally drifted off to sleep, dawn was only hours away.

I guess when Louis changed servers it lost my post with chapter 2
Oh well, here it is finally done:

Chapter 2: Audraie Starts Her Own Journey

Audraie hurried through the busy streets of the town. “I sure picked a great time to get out of class.” She thought to herself sarcastically. Then she smiled seeing her friend, Marilee. “Hey you!” Marilee shouted over to her.
“Hello to you too”
“What are you doing about at this time of day? Selling your father’s goods again?”
“No, not this time. Just… browsing” Audraie said thoughtfully.
Marilee eyed her suspiciously, “Yeah sure. Oh, you keep your secrets. I’m out looking for Bartholomew.” She said with a giggle.
Audraie looked sad at the mention of Marilee’s fiancée. Her own fiancée had died about 3 months ago, when a large force of Wonkals had attacked their town. Damien had been the captain of the town’s guards. He was very proud of his job, as was Audraie. But it was that job that put him at the front lines when the Wonkal’s attacked.
“Oh, well. Got to go. See you at Farmer Brice’s party?” Marilee ask enthusiastically.
“Sure.” Audraie replied, not sounding excited at all.
Marilee searched her friend’s face, before saying, “Say, are you alright?”
“Yeah, sure. I’m fine” Audraie replied, putting no heart into the smile she put on.
“Okay, if you’re sure. See you later!” Marilee waved and walked off.
Audraie looked around, her long dark hair swirling loosely around her waist in the cool breeze. She closed her eyes as if wanting to shut out the world, then abruptly opened them and set off again. Audraie was usually a very happy and cheerful person, but ever since the death of her fiancée, no one had even seen her crack a smile.
Her parents were worried about her, but she didn’t care.
She didn’t care for much of anything these days.

She sighed and squinted as she turned a corner and the sun shone in her eyes. She thought back on her lesson today. Her parents would kill her when they found out she had been practicing magic with the village “crazy woman”. Turns out the “crazy woman” knew how to use magic, and Audraie could too. Why had her parents never told her that she had the ability to use magic? There were few people in the world that could.
Did they even know? Or were they trying to protect her?
She sighed. It didn’t matter now. She had learned a lot and no one could change that.
She should have known there was something special about her. Something different. And I wasn’t just because she was adopted. After all, there was the violet-blue marking on her lower arm and when she was angry she had always spoken in a different language. Nothing too unusual about that, but what was unusual was that she knew nothing of the language she spoke. She had always been different from the other girls.
She was almost home, almost to the point that will change her life forever. She was going to tell her parents about the magic lessons, and tell them she had to leave. She had to at least try to find her twin sister. She couldn’t just sit around and wait for her to show up anymore. She had done enough sitting. Enough waiting. She was leaving.
She stopped in the alley leaned against the wall. This was going to be tough. How are they going to react? Will they support me? Will they disown me? Audraie gritted her teeth and straightened, it was best to get this over with.

She walked the short rest of the way home. Her family’s home was right next to her father’s smithy. It was nice for him not to have to walk a long way to and from work every day. Audraie sighed, she would miss her home. She walked up to her father where he was working in his shop.
“Father?” she said
“Ah my lovely daughter, did you have a nice time at the market today?” her father ask, pausing from his working on a horseshoe.
“Yes father, but that is not why I came to you. I need to speak to you and mother about something.”
“Well you can tell us tonight, I have a busy day ahead of me” he said as he went back to work.
“No father” Audraie said sternly, “I need to speak to both of you, now.”
Audraie’s father looked at her with his brow knitted. It wasn’t like his daughter to talk so sternly to him. “Alright Audraie, if it is that important.”
“It is.”
Audraie walked back toward the house and heard her father’s steps behind her. She walked in the house and breathed in the yeasty sweet smell of her mother’s fresh rolls. Oh how I shall miss those, she thought. She walked into the kitchen where her mother had just taken out the rolls.
“Audraie!” her mother said smiling brightly, “I just took your favorite rolls out. Hot and fresh just like you have always liked them.” Then seeing her husband behind Audraie, her smile dropped. He never left his shop in the middle of the day unless something was horribly wrong. “Audraie, Solnam, what is going on?”
“Mother, Father, I have something important to tell you.”
Her father went to stand behind her mother. “Go ahead dear, we’re listening.”
“You know I love you both very much, but there has always been a part of my life missing.” Her parents nodded solemnly. “I have never known anything about my birth parents, and with as good of parents as I had to raise me I didn’t need to.” At that her parents smiled. “But it is still my past, and I still have a twin sister out there somewhere. I believe we need to find each other. Together, maybe we can find out more about our past. I know you never meant to hurt me, and maybe you didn’t even know but I have the abilities to use magic.”
“We knew Audraie, we just never found the right time to tell you.” Her father said.
“Oh Solnam, we knew deep down she was too smart not to know.” Added her mother
“Yes, I suppose we did.” He said with a sigh.
Audraie looked at both her parents. “I love you both very much, but I this is something I need to do. I will be leaving today. I know this is short notice, but I can’t put it off any longer.”
“We understand Audraie, we really do.” Her mother came over to her and enveloped her in a warm, yeasty scented hug. Audraie hugged her back and couldn’t help but think that this was the last hug she could ever get from her mother.
“I have my pack upstairs so I’m ready to go. Will you explain to Furlorst for me?” Audraie ask, thinking of her younger brother “He will not understand.”
“Of course” said her mother with tears in her eyes.
Audraie felt her own eyes well up with tears. She went over to her father and gave him a hug.
“Be careful daughter, remember we love you. Choose your friends wisely, take others words with caution, and watch your back. That is the only advise I can give you.”
“Thank you father. I have to go before it becomes too hard” Audraie walked briskly up the stairs to her room where her pack lay waiting. She looked at it hesitantly, almost wishing she never had to pick it up. But she did, she knew it in her heart.
She shouldered her pack and started down the steps.
Waving at her parents she walked out the door. She walked at a normal pace until she was outside the city walls. There she paused and took a deep breath. She stood there looking at the town. It was all she had ever known for the past 9 years of her life. Now she was leaving it all. She hoped it was worth it.

Chapter 3: A disappointing find

Drania woke to the pleasant scent of roasting meat. She looked around, wondering where it was coming from, then she remembered. The old man was standing over a fire cooking some sort of meat she did not recognize. She sat up and stretched her limbs, yawning.
The old man noticed she was awake and smiled. “Sleep well?” he ask.
“What little I got.” Drania mumbled under breathe.
“What was that?”
“Oh, I just said I slept fine” Drania forced a half smile on her face then rolled her eyes when the man turned away. She had never understood how someone could be in a good mood at early hours. She stood up and rolled up her bedding. She looked at the meat the man had cooked and her stomach growled greedily. Drania blushed.
The old man chuckled and said, “There is plenty here for the both of us.”
He put the meat between some bread and handed it to her. Drania smiled and thanked him quietly. As she munched she looked around for Angel.
“I fed your falcon some meat and she took off. I presumed that it was okay for her to go off on her own.”
“Yes it is, but Angel is not mine. She travels with me as she pleases, she is a companion, not property.”
“I see.” the man said as he took his own meat and sat down to eat it.
Drania said nothing for the rest of the meal. She finished quickly and stood up to douse the fire. When she had finished that task the old man was standing and ready to go.
She looked him over, wondering if she would have to slow her pace for him. But as if reading her mind, the man said, “I can keep any pace you set. Shall we be off?”
Drania nodded, and they set off. She was surprised, for, despite looking old and worn, the man kept a steady pace.
They traveled until a little while after midday at which time they came to a town. Stopping before they were close enough to be seen, Drania told the man, “Wait here.” And disappeared into the trees. She came out a few moments later in a pale green dress with her hair hanging loosely around her shoulders. The man looked her over with a curious look in his eyes.
“Just want to look presentable.” She said.
The man shrugged and they continued down the road toward the village.
They reached the gates shortly and went through without any trouble. Drania sighed and readjusted her pack. “I need to go see some people, will you be okay?”
“Yes, of course.” The old man chuckled, “Shall we meet at the Firstar Inn this evening?”
“Sure, I have not been to this town before so I don’t know where it is, but I’m sure I can find it.”
“I’m sure you will.”
Drania waved to the man and started off. It was her custom to take at least some time in each town she passed through to ask questions about her sister. So far, she had had no luck, except for some cheat who made her pay money for useless information. She didn’t fall for that trick again. She saw a middle aged man at a fruit stand and figured that was a good enough place to start. She went up to him and ask, “Excuse me sir? I need some information.”
“If I can help ya lovely lassie, I most certainly will.” The man answered with a thick accent and gap-toothed smile.
“Thank you, I’m looking for a girl. About my age, and height, her name is Audraie.”
Drania saw the spark of recognition pass across the man’s face.
“You know the person of whom I speak.”
“Who wants to know?” The man ask gruffly.
“I am her sister, Drania.”
This time, it was shock that was apparent on his face.
“Why I never… You’re the spittin image of her. Just change the color of ye hair and eyes…” He looked at her intently…
“Then you do know her!” Drania said now getting excited.
“Aye, I did. But she disappeared form these parts around a week ago.” The man replied.
Drania couldn’t help the look of disappointment that registered on her face.
“Well, don’t be all sad like that deary! I’ll just point ya to her home, her parents should be home.”
“Parents?”
“Why yes, Solnam and Cariane Vernote. He’s the smithy. Just go down that road till you see the candle cart, then turn right and just keep walking till you see the smithy.” The man smiled at her again.
“Thank you very much.” Drania said and started off in the direction the man had pointed. She walked until she came to the candle cart and turned, just as the man had told her.
She passed a Sodrine as she was walking along. She had never seen one and she couldn’t help but stop a few moments to watch her. Sodrine’s hair color would slowly change to match their mood. They looked much like elves with pointed ears and lithe bodies otherwise.
And sure enough, after 3 shops and 2 houses, she came to the smithy. There was a largely built man standing there hammering what appeared to be a scythe. She was a bit nervous about approaching such a large man, but knew it was unavoidable. If you can face the woods alone for 3 months by yourself Drania, you can certainly face one man.
She gathered her courage and went up to him. Since he did not look up right away she cleared her throat loudly. He still didn’t look up. Agitated she tapped him on the shoulder and said over his hammering, “Excuse me sir…”
“Oh, excuse me. I did not see…” he said as he looked up, then gasped when he saw her.
“You.. why.. I can’t believe..” He stuttered.
“I have heard that I look much like your daughter. Could you please tell me where she is? I am her twin sister, Drania.”
The man just sat down with a stunned look on his face. “Oh…my” he said finally. Then another expression came to his face, anger. “And just what do you have to prove this?” he ask.
Drania looked at him strangely, then said “Well… When we were found, we both had birthmarks on our wrists. Audraie’s was violet, and mine is green.” She lifted up her sleeve to show him her mark. It looked almost like a vine, spiraling up from the middle of her fingers to her lower arm. The man took her wrist in his hands and looked it over.
“Also, we had these enchanted amulets around our necks. I don’t know if Audraie kept hers on, but I never took mine off.” She reached inside the neck of her dress and pulled out the amulet, showing it to the man.
“Yes, Audraie never took hers off either. All right, I believe that you are who you claim to be. Welcome to my home. Why don’t you come to the house so we can discuss what has happened.” He set down the scythe he was working on and started off toward a house next to the smithy. Drania followed him, and went through the door. She saw a woman in the kitchen cleaning the dishes. She stood up when she saw the man. Then she saw Drania, and dropped the pan she was holding. It clattered to the floor noisily to the floor.
The woman didn’t seem to notice the pan she just stared at Drania.

“Cariane, this is Drania…. Audraie’s twin.”
“Audraie’s….. twin” the woman said, and dropped herself into a nearby chair
Drania couldn’t help the smile that spread across her face. This was the third time today she had gotten that reaction from someone.
“Excuse me, but could you please explain to me your relationship you had with Audraie?”
“We adopted her when she was 10. We originally bought her to help me out with the baby I was carrying, but I lost it. We considered just turning her into the local orphanage, but she was so adorable and cheerful. She captured our hearts.”
“We raised her well, like she was of our own blood. She was never any trouble.” Her husband continued. “But enough about that, we want to know about you.”
Drania sighed, “My past is much too long and depressing of a story to tell you right now. I will share it with you some other day if we meet again. For now, I really need to know where she went. Where is my sister?” she ask fervently searching their faces for any sign of emotion.
Cariane looked at Solnam, then they both looked at Drania. “She’s looking for you.” Cariane finally said.
Drania groaned and stood up. She rubbed her hands though her hair and began pacing the floor. “Do you even know what direction she went?”
“Well, we aren’t sure, but the guards said they saw her leave through the southern gate.” Solnam replied.
“Thank you.” Drania said, then turned and headed for the door.
“Wait!” Cariane shouted, “Where are you staying”
“I was going to meet a friend at the Firstar Inn, but I now that I know my sister has been here, I want to get off as soon as possible.”
“Then you cannot stay, even for the evening?”
“I’m afraid not, thank you very much for your information though. I can see Audraie was raised in a pleasant home by kind people.”
Cariane nodded sadly, “Until we meet again then” she said touching her hand to Drania’s shoulder in the typical way pf saying goodbye.
Drania clapped her hand to Cariane’s shoulder as well, “Indeed” she replied.

Drania set off from the house to try and find the old man. She searched all the pubs she came across as she figured that was where he would be. But she couldn’t find him in any of them. She thought that was strange, but thought that maybe he had just gone ahead to the Inn early. He wasn’t there either. Now she was getting really worried
Even though he had shown incredible durability during the trip here, he was still old. Anything could have happened to him. She decided to just search the whole town for him. After 2 hours she had gone through every decent part of the town. “I guess I will just have to search the indecent places too.” She said out loud to no one in particular.
She was almost ready to go back to the Inn and wait for him, when she turned a corner and saw the man speaking to someone in hushed tones. Something made her back away behind the wall again. She tried to listen to their conversation, but could only pick up a few words here and there.
“She is all…. Thought… I will take…. Sister.”
Drania leaned in closer to listen, but as she did she must have dislodged a stone from the wall. It dropped off and rolled into the street. She heard the voices suddenly cut off, and heard someone walking toward her. Drania looked around for a place to hide, noticed an empty barrel and ran to hide behind it. She heard the footsteps, slowly coming closer She held her breath, and waited. She saw a large pair of mud splattered boots step beside the barrel. She crouched lower, and waited to be caught. The person in the boots just stood there for a moment, then walked back the way they had come.
Confused, Drania waited a moment then looked around the barrel. She heard a deep voice tell the other person, “Nothing, probably just a rat. Now, let us go to that Pub you have always told me about and enjoy ourselves!” The two voices laughed boisterously and walked off. Drania sighed a breath of relief and rested against the cold, hard wall as soon as the were out of sight. Maybe it wasn’t the man, she thought to herself. Don’t be too quick to judge him. Just go back to the Inn and wait for him. More than likely, he just had one too many drinks and nodded off in a corner somewhere. Yes, that’s it.
She shook her head and stood up. She walked back to the inn and sat down to a meal. Dirty looking soup and rock hard bread. She groaned and wished now that she had accepted the couple’s offer to stay. She ate her rather unpleasant meal, and returned the dishes to the barmaid. She went to the front and sat on a bench near the door to wait for the man. She realized as she sat there, she didn’t even know his name. She made a mental note to ask him as soon as he got back. Just as she felt herself dosing off, she felt a rush of cold air as the door opened. The man had finally come back.
He shut the door, walked to the desk where the innkeeper was. They talked for a few moments, and she saw the man point toward her. The man looked behind him and saw her. “Drania, my dear. You didn’t wait up for me, now did you?”
“I was… worried.” She replied.
“Well, that is certainly nice of you, but not necessary. I’m not as old as I look.” He chuckled. He turned back, and told the man, “Just one room for tonight Beridan.”
The innkeeper called Beridan handed him a key, and the older man tossed him a few coins.

He started up the staircase and she followed. He walked down the hall until he found the room number matching the one on the key he got from the innkeeper. He unlocked the door, went inside and held it open for Drania. She stepped in warily.
She looked around the room as he shut the door. Not wonderful, but better than she had expected from such a place. There were two bed with thin blankets tossed on them and a curtain separating them. He went to one and she to the other.
“Where did you go?” she ask
“Oh, just visited with some old friends. I lived here for a time.”
She nodded as she took off her boots. She still didn’t trust him. This is silly Drania, what has he done to make him untrustworthy of you? She thought for a moment then said to herself, maybe what you should be asking is what has he done to make you trust him?
She shook her head and dismissed all bad thoughts of him for the night. She took off her boots and slipped into the bed fully clothed.
The man looked to be doing the same.
She saw him take off his boots, and then he stood to shut the curtain. He nodded to her and she to him, and he shut the curtain. It only went so far as her knees, but it was better than nothing.
She could still see his boots and pack at the foot of his bed.
She started to shut her eyes to get some much-needed rest when she noticed something. His boots. They were the same ones she had seen in the alley.
