Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur sat at the tavern booth sipping his mead trying to make sense of the faded map The temple of the moon lies within her shadow. He read the line over and over and it never seemed to help, no matter how many times he did. Placing his cup on the table Úlfur picked at the last of his meal. Music started in the background, a soft and gentle ballad that Belatona was quickly becoming known for. All the way from Isenstar to be stopped by a piece of parchment He sighed aloud and pulled his cloak against himself. He began muttering "Her shadow. Her Shadow. Her. Her." His eyes grew heavy and sleep came to him.... Úlfur jumped awake seconds later and swore as he knocked the table with his knee. Dammit, you fool don't draw attention to yourself. He looked out the window and watched the sliver of a moon pass through the clouds I still have at least three weeks before the new moon His last change had been a close one, he had to spend it in the Spine I'm running out of options. Úlfur folded out the map again and began his study again

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Illuna jumped and blinked, looking at the man in the booth behind her. She scowled at him and turned back to her table, wiping up the cider she had spilled when she had jumped. She tossed the sopping rag to a maid who was walking passed, then picked up her mug and walked over to the man. Sasha stood up and walked beside her, the white wolf's eyes taking in everything, yet still managing to look disinterested about it all. He smells funny... Like a wolf, but not quite, the blue-eyed she-wolf said. She trotted ahead of Luna and stopped in front of the man, cocking her head and wagging her tail slowly from side-to-side.
Illuna looked at her friend in surprise, normally Sasha stayed by her side or behind her, she never directly approached anybody, except Lu's twin Soleil. "Well... Here I was coming to give you a talking-to about having your nightmares outside and away from people trying to eat in peace, and then my friend here takes a liking to you. That's really rather unusual, especially since you haven't even introduced yourself yet," she said quietly, her earlier annoyance fading to curiosity. "I'm Illuna, and that beautiful mess is Sasha," she said, sitting down at his table.
She held up her cup and another maid appeared suddenly and refilled her cup with more cider. Lu waited until the girl had left before speaking, she didn't bother to lower her voice much more than she already had, nobody was close enough to hear. "So who are you? Sasha says you smell like a wolf, but not exactly. You're not a hunter are you?" she asked, eyeing him closely. It wasn't uncommon for hunters to come along seeking the pelt of the beautiful white wolf that traveled with the strange, white-haired teenage girl.OOC: If you've read the rp Masquerade, I feel inclined to mention this is before she gets the ring that negates her powers on her finger. I'm still working on the rp where that happens. Pm me if I need to edit this.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
OOC:Well if you're in need of a particular item this could be the RP, most RPs involving Úlfur will be him searching for magical artefacts to help his curse
IC: Úlfur stared at the young girl's tattoo A perfect crescent moon? Curious indeed.... realisation dawned upon him slowly and he shook his weary head. "Greetings, I am Úlfur and no I am not a hunter, well at least not of animal hide, I seek artefacts and knowledge on old deities, religions and cults." Úlfur stared at the wolf's clean white fur. She was a normal wolf from what he could tell but all wolves serve the moon. "I came here seeking some items that were of interest to me. The only thing is now I am stumped by this piece of paper and it is beginning to look like a nightmare. When I was younger I once located a gem that was lost for three centuries with only a fragment of a fairth...... and now I babble about the glory days to a young women" Úlfur smiled and raised his drink. He gazed again at Sasha. "I am looking for a place called the temple of the moon. It is an old and dead deity that worshipped the beast of the moon, particularly wolves and, well if you believe it, were-wolves. I am hoping they left behind some spell or trinket of value. What brings you and your companion here? She looks like a wolf but clearly has a greater knowledge to tell you what I smell like, especially when you yourself are clearly more than just a human." Úlfur let the statement lie in the air as he took another drink. Maybe he had pushed her too far but he needed to show her that he was not normal and that maybe she would be better returning to her own booth

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Lu didn't need to see the way Sasha's ears pricked forward to know she was thinking the same as the half-Shade. "Aaaaahhh, so that's what you are. A werewolf. Hmmm... Never met one of your kind before," she said, leaning forward. Maroon eyes stared into green as she surveyed him. "You know, if it's a cure you're looking for, I don't think you need it. There's something of the wolf about your face now that suggests you were born for it," she said, still staring intently at him. She sighed suddenly and leaned back. "Or maybe I'm just seeing things," she said and took a sip of cider.
"Nothing wrong with two young things chatting up their adventures to each other, if I were to tell you half of what I've done and can do, you'd turn tail, literally, and run," she said, blinking. For a brief moment, the image of the raiders that attacked her home flashed across her eyes, but then she blinked again and it vanished. "Temple of the Moon you say? Sounds like my kind of place. Seems like the most logical place to start would be somewhere high and near the sea. High so you get the clearest view of the moon, by the sea so you have a constant reminder of the moon's power, which seems like something those moon-worshiping types would appreciate," she said quietly, frowning at the table while she thought.
"Well aren't you the observant one," Lu chuckled, registering Ulfur's final words. "Actually, Sasha is your average wolf, beautiful and intelligent though she is. I raised her from a pup when she was shunned by her pack for her coloring. White is hard to hide on a hunt. Anyways, closeness like that engenders some understanding, so it was only natural that she eventually learned to speak with her mind," she said, smiling as the she-wolf grinned at her.
"And obviously I'm not what I appear to be. How many teenage girls do you know with white hair and red eyes? Not very many I'd imagine," she added, chuckling. "But suffice to say my father was a very bad man, who changed and now here I am," she concluded. If he was half as intelligent as he sounded, he wouldn't need her to reveal her most dangerous secret aloud, even though it was plain to see. If she didn't say it where people could hear, they could just shun her for being strange, instead of killing her for what she was, which they would if they had proof.
"As for what I'm doing here... I'm just traveling," she said, looking over his shoulder and out the window.OOC: Sure, but it requires another of my charries, who isn't too fond of Lu. Check out Blake.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
OOC: Seems fine by me, anyway I don't have any villainous characters to hinder this quest, he can be our man.
ICÚlfur couldn't help but laugh, "You got it in one go" he smiled broadly and continued on "I met a dwarf craftsman about six months back that pestered me every night in a tavern trying to get why his dogs were afraid of me. He eventually succeeded the night before my change and I was run out of town with pitch forks and torches. Just to be on the safe side." Úlfur liked this one, she was smart, unlike most of the people he passed by, and training a she-wolf to open it's mind was a fair accomplishment. "I am glad you think I was born for it, but unfortunately even after three decades I still lose control every new moon. If I can find no cure maybe I can find a method to keep myself tame and calm during the forced changes." He unclipped his brooch and placed the green silk cloak beside him. He offered his scraps to Sasha and looked around the bar, judging the people. No-one was paying them any attention, which was usually a good sign. "As for my kind, well I didn't know I had a kind. Unlike most people who are infected I change at a new moon not a full moon, and from what research I've done I am the only known werewolf that can change at other times as well. But any night other than a new moon I retain control over myself. On those night's I am forced into the beast, I am a danger to most and usually stay as far away as I can from society." He felt like he could share with her, after all she too had a secret.
"As for your hair, I seen a young man play in this town only a short while ago who was younger than you and had stark white hair. He had a great voice and I was sad to hear he is not around any more, apparently he disappeared with an elf awhile after I left." Úlfur voice still contained the disappointment at meeting the Elf who had travelled thus far alone into the Empire. "You're eyes are your main betrayal to a normal magician or scholar or learned bard, but I can smell the difference in your blood, the same as a half-elf or half-dwarf who are common enough in the Varden. You smell like salty waves and a furnace in use. A curious combination, but both powerful elements." Úlfur tipped his chin towards her and then pondered what she had said. "Who was your father? He must of been a good man to cope and deal with that burden, almost all lose themselves too much to hope for a family."
I suppose the ocean is a good a place as any, and I already had guessed Her Shadow ment a mountain with a name, so which mountain in the Spine has a name? He finished his mead and left the cup down. Closing his eyes he inhaled deeply but his mind drew a blank I don't know enough about the mountains, I grew up in a forest and live by a lake. "Tell me Illuna, Do you know much about the Spine? Are there any mountains that carry names? I'll admit I try to avoid them as much as possible, I prefer a lake and plains to those things. And you said you are travelling, so help a fellow traveller out." Although he did not point out he could smell her blood change as she had told him her alibi

Re: Riches in the Shadows
"How strong is your wolf Ulfur? You could always try binding yourself with chains on the new moon. That way you don't risk running into a wayward hunter or merchant. And I've never heard of a man-wolf changing on the new moon either, it's unusual for sure. More than unusual," she said. "Oh, and changing at will isn't all that unheard of, you just haven't been reading the right books or talking to the right people. I've never seen it myself, but I know it happens. I'm more interested in the new moon thing," she added.
Sasha sniffed the scraps the man gave her, then daintily pushed them away with her nose. I already ate, but thank you, she said to him.
"Well I didn't say it was unique, I just said it was uncommon enough to make me stand out. And that's not what I would imagine moonlight to smell like, but okay," Lu said, rolling her eyes and smiling. "I wonder what he did to make an elf spirit him away," she said, looking around the tavern. She was starting to get a restless feeling in the back of her mind, the kind that she had learned meant it was best to leave wherever she was, quickly. She shifted restlessly, but she was having fun talking with Ulfur and ignored the warning. Whatever it was she could easily escape it, it was nighttime after all. "Well thankfully I don't ever let them get close enough to see my eyes. My father? His name is Tedren and he had a harder time of it than you might imagine. He did many bad things in his life, as you can imagine, but something changed him. If I were romantic, I would say it was my mother, but it wasn't, he was a different man already when they met. Anyways, they fell in love and had me and my twin. He was always leaving though, for long periods of time. I think he felt it was too dangerous to be around him constantly for fear he would lose control and hurt us," Illuna said, her eyes unfocused as she drifted among her memories.
Sasha nudged her arm with her snout, snapping her out of it. She blinked and looked down into the she-wolf's dark blue eyes and smiled. "So far as I know, most of the larger peaks in the Spine have names, but I don't know any of them. You might be able to find them in a book on Alagaesian geography or such," she said to the werewolf. Tipping her goblet up, she drained the last of her cider and stood. "This was fun, but I have to be going. Feels like trouble on the wind," she said to Ulfur, nodding at him and setting her cup down. She turned and walked towards the door.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur stood and shook Illuna's hand before she left, "Trouble is hard to out run, but I hope you get a had start" He watched as she left, his curiosity ablaze Well she is a strange one, and she knew more than enough of werewolves for someone you has not met one.... Turning back to his stuff he pulled out an old and tattered map. After a few minutes gazing at it he knew it was no help. So I must travel Kuasta, there is my safest bet in finding a person with the knowledge I seek. He sat awhile longer, judging which path is quickest to his destination, in the end he decided Leona Lake's edge until he found a pass. A journey of many miles, if I must set off I should do it now but travelling will be tough without a full supply of rations
Within an hour Úlfur had purchased food from the bar and acquired the location of a tradesman that stayed open at all hours to accommodate such travellers as himself. He walked along the moon lit streets greeting the people on their way to the music session when he heard the thud-dud, thud-dud, thud-dud of a heart beat racing. I suppose Illuna got more of a head start then me. He continued on his way and decided to leave town immediately.
Although the gate guard was not keen to let him pass Úlfur just told him that he was the guest of a local farmer and he was late home as it was. The guard gave him a pat down to see if he had anything he shouldn't on him and then let him pass. As Úlfur came to Leona's edge, far enough away from the city not to be noticed, he slipped into the forest and tied his cloak about him. concentrating his energy and focussing his mind the change began. Soon a large grey wolf stood in his place, his green eyes flashing brightly in the night. Now to cover some distance Just as he was about to take off he heard the rustling of some leaves, a few feet right of him

Re: Riches in the Shadows
You cut it pretty close back there, Sasha said, trotting alongside Illuna as they walked through the village. In the dark, she looked like a regular dog, though a big one, so people didn't swerve to avoid them as they walked through the streets as they normally would. As it was, they seemed to sense something was strange about Lu, even though the hood of her cloak was up, and there was a clear space around them for about two feet in every direction.
Not really, I'm not sure what it is that's got my dander up, but I don't think it's got anything to do with our personal problems. Let's just get out of this town, I'm sure I'll feel better once we're out of these walls, she replied, tugging her hood down more securely before slipping down a side street.
Before long they were out of the gates and beyond the view of the guards. The half-Shade glanced around, shifting restlessly. She still had that gut feeling of trouble coming. "You know, I'll be able to travel quicker on four feet than two," she whispered to her friend. Closing her eyes in concentration, she picked a form she liked to use whenever it was just her and Sasha.
A soft glow radiated around her body as her form blurred and flowed like water. She sank towards the ground, seeming to fall forward and catch herself on her hands, but they weren't hands anymore, they were paws. A feeling like cold water running over her skin spread from the tip of her nose all the way down her body, culminating in an odd tugging sensation as a tail sprouted from the small of her back.
Less than a minute after starting her transformation, a small, pure white wolf stood next to Sasha, blinking it's bright maroon eyes as it took in it's surroundings with increased senses. There was a patch of silvery fur, barely visible against the white, on it's left cheek in the shape of a crescent moon.
Ahhh... That's better. You know, of all the forms I've learned to do, I think this is my favorite, Lu said to Sasha, wagging her tail. She trotted forward and was about to leave their secluded hiding place when she heard something crashing through the forest beside them. Lu froze, sniffing the wind. Sasha stepped in front of her, the larger wolf protecting the smaller. Wait, Sasha, I think... Do you smell that? Like a wolf, but not quite... Oh good grief, it's Ulfur! What's he doing out here? she said to the other white wolf.
She trotted through some bushes, ignoring Sasha's worried whine and almost stumbled right over the top of the man, now in his wolf form. So you weren't kidding, you can change whenever you want! she exclaimed impressed. She eyed the grey wolf in front of her curiously, then sat on her haunches. Before you ask, no, I'm not a werewolf like you. Courtesy of my odd heritage, I have some odd powers. One of those is shapeshifting, she said to him.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur yelped in a way that closely resembled a throaty laugh Oh you are a curious one, half-Shade, shape-shifter, animal tamer. No offence Sasha. he nodded his head in the direction of the larger wolf Events seem to bend around you youngling. And I think I'd like to see them unfold. He shook himself out and sniffed at the air. It is a clear night and I was hoping to cover some distance before the sun rose. I am hoping to make it to Kuasta and find someone who knows more about the mountains. As a wolf I can travel much faster and a great distance without bother Úlfur gave her a wolfish grin. You wouldn't be following me no? Úlfur stretched himself out and looked at the moon as it reached ever closer to midnight Never mind I've wasted enough time talking tonight. Now I run! and hopefully I reach the mountains by tomorrow night With that he released a long husky howl and ran through the trees Stay or go but a caravan of men are coming along the road about half a mile away he told them as his tail disappeared into the undergrowth. His nose led the way and his paws followed. He pricked his ears to see if he could her the foot falls of the other two She could be a good ally He though to himself

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Lu's wolf form grinned at Ulfur. And that's not even the half of it, she said cryptically. Following you? Huh, never. I think you're the one following me, after all, I was already here and changed when I heard you stumbling along, she scoffed, still grinning at him, her crimson tongue lolling from her mouth. Sasha walked up beside her and sat, her nose flaring as she sniffed the air curiously.
Now he smells more wolf than human, though that's hardly surprising, she said to Lu. She was a little annoyed that the man seemed to think Lu had tamed her, but didn't comment. It was an easy assumption to make and one she had forgiven many times before. Her ears pricked forward when he took off running through the undergrowth. I know what you're going to say, and yes, Kuasta is very nice this time of year, she said to Lu, feeling the half-Shade girl reaching for her mind.
Well then, let us be off![/] she said to her companion, laughing. She surged to her paws and took off running, covering the distance easily. Before long they had caught up to Ulfur and were barely panting from the exertion. [i]Don't tell me you honestly thought we'd sit out on an adventure like this? she laughed, Our own travels are dull compared to this. It's always good to have a reason to go somewhere, because after a while, traveling aimlessly gets depressingly dull.
Lu! Watch where you're going! Sasha shouted in alarm, leaping forward and pushing the girl to the side with her shoulder. She skidded to a stop and growled at the man before her. She couldn't see his face, but the glowing orange eyes peering down at her from the back of a horse had her hackles up as far as they would go. The white she-wolf crouched low to the ground and backed away, her eyes never leaving the man's face.
Blake stared down at the three wolves before him coldly. They were beautiful animals, well fed and with full pelts, unlike most of the scraggly beasts around these parts. He eyed the big grey one carefully, deeming it the biggest threat and completely ignoring the white wolf growling and snarling at his feet. He assumed it was a small pack, a mother and father with the one pup judging from the protectiveness of the larger white one.
His gaze flicked to the small pup, smiling humorlessly as it shrank away from his gaze. "Be gone mutts, I have no quarrel with you," he said, spurring his mount. The chestnut jumped forward on tight legs. Though it's eyes rolled in it's head and sweat poured down it's side, it knew better than to act on it's instinctual fear while this man was riding it.
He estimated he was little more than a mile from the town. He wouldn't stop until he reached it.
Lu shivered as the man rode passed her, her eyes never leaving his back until he had disappeared into the dark trees. I think trouble caught up with us, she said, still shivering. Something about the man unnerved her greatly, and she knew she had been wrong. The trouble she had felt was personal.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
The ladies soon caught up with Úlfur as they were faster than him, but his longer footfalls allowed him to keep pace with the light-footed she-wolves. Just before they burst through the under growth Úlfur halted his strides but Illuna just burst past him, almost straight into a horse and strange man on top of it. Úlfur sniffed at the man but could his scent betrayed nothing of what he was doing, he smelled as a man upon a horse after a long journey would. The horse's scent was overpowering, the fear at being confronted by three wolves looked like it was almost too much for the poor creature. Within seconds Sasha's hackles were raised a growl escape her lips. Úlfur bared his teeth and stayed ahead of the females, as a pack leader would in the wild.
The man spoke to them and then rode on, in to the darkness, pushing the horse pass it's limits. Úlfur could here Illuna's heart as she regained calamity. Come on, let's leave this place. I don't like the look he was giving us and I'd rather put some miles between us and the city before we rest. Úlfur shook out his fur once more and yawn.It has been a long day already he thought to himself. He sniffed at the air, trying to remember the man's scent. Just in case the meet again. We'll rest at Leona Lake's most eastern edge, between the lake and the mountains, few us that route so it should be safe With that he took the lead and followed the lakes rim to his right.

Sounds good to me, Lu said, charging after Ulfur. She had a hard time restraining herself and not taking off at a full run, which would have left him behind. It felt good to run through the forest, the clean smell of trees and water passing through her nose, clearing away the smell of the man on horseback. He had smelled like darkness, blood, and cold steel, all jumbled up in a confusion of scents. The very memory of it made her hackles rise again, and she had to remind herself that they were far away from him now. Sasha bumped her shoulder, a light, encouraging yip echoing from her throat.
Lu smiled at her friend. Hush now, he might hear you. Thank you though, she said, bumping her shoulder in return.
Don't make me laugh, he was heading in the opposite direction. I doubt he's reached the town yet. Even if he was already on our trail, assuming it's us he's after, he wouldn't be close enough to hear that, Sasha snorted.
"You say she was here only a few hours ago, but you didn't see where she went when she left?" Blake asked coldly, glaring at the tavern keeper before him. The man mumbled something and continued to stare at the floor, every now and then a shiver of fear would rack his body. "Speak up peasant!" he snapped, taking a step closer.
"I said no, I didn't see where she went. Why don't you go trouble the guards, perhaps they saw her leave," the older man said loudly, daring to look up at Blake. He flinched and away when he saw the glowing orange lights glaring down at him from underneath his hood.
"I'll do that. Do you know the man she was with?"
"No, never seen him before. He seemed a little odd though," he replied, scratching his chin in thought.
"Thank you for your help," Blake said, then slipped one of his knives out of it's sheathe. The bar tender's eyes widened with fright, almost seeming to bug out completely as the knife approached him. Blake watched his face, smiling coldly, then at the last second altered the course of the knife, impaling a gold coin with the point and then offered it to the man.
When he took the coin, Blake jerked his knife free and sheathed it, then walked to the door. Outside he swung up onto his horse, turning the beast's head towards the gates of the city. Before long the wood-and-iron gates were before him and he was glaring at the guards. "Let me out," he hissed menacingly. The guard operating the controls was young and easily intimidated, as was his partner. He squeaked with fear and started pulling the wench that would raise the gate.
Blake didn't wait for them to raise it all the way, as soon as it was high enough to clear his head, he spurred his mount forward. From what he had learned from the young sops, his prey had indeed left the city some hours before. He grinded his teeth as a flash of memory came to him. The wolves. It was her and her blasted pet! But then who was the other one? he snarled to himself, gouging his horse again and sending the animal into a headlong gallop. It was dangerous to push the animal so fast in pitch black, but he couldn't wait. He needed to find that clearing again so he could pick up their tracks.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur shivered even as he ran and almost lost his footing for a moment. That man was defiantly someone to avoid in the foreseeable future. Although I believe Sasha is right and we are out of his grasp at this moment there are other things lurking about. He as he said this an owl hooted over head and flew into the night's sky. Úlfur thought back onto the man's gaze. Not unlike a Shade's would you say? Whatever his heritage magic was involved of that I am certain, and not the kind to help a woman through the birth either. Úlfur continued to take long strides beside his new companions and his mind began running through all the spells of alteration he knew, a comprehensive list as it was he could think of nothing that cause such side effects. Maybe he did it to himself to look more menacing, such a thing is not uncommon among magicians. He was talking to himself now and the only other sound was their footfalls and the panting of their breaths.
As just as dawn began to tint the edge of the velvet blue sky he began to hit his barriers. Unlike you two I am not able to run all today without a break, I suggest we rest for an hour or two, take a morning meal and try to pass through the mountains by mid-day? His strides weren't as powerful and the younger wolves were pulling ahead of him. Then he heard horses hooves and vigour re-entered his body like a flame to oil. Yet there was more than one horse and the smell was not that of the strange man. Why was it I felt compelled to run because of hooves? he asked himself quietly. Maybe we should find a more secluded place first though. He glanced at the other two wondering if he should let them go their own way. Then he doubted the man was there for him, Perhaps I'll drag this quest out until I am sure that man was just a coincidence and not a threat He gazed at young Illuna She is a curious one, as I have said before. Úlfur realised that by keeping his mind blocked while having internal debates was rude when the others couldn't hear him, again he opened his mind and waited for their input as he slowed to a gentle jog

Re: Riches in the Shadows
I agree, even if he was after one of us, he wouldn't be looking for wolves, he'd be looking for people. Well, unless he's after you and knows you're a werewolf. Not many people outside of my family know I can shapeshift, Illuna said. I'm not sure about his eyes.... With magic he could certainly change the color of them, but I'm not sure about that glow they had. That wasn't natural, and it felt like there was something so... wrong about it, she continued, shivering at the memory of the man's evil gaze.
Lu barely managed not to sigh with relief when Ulfur suggested they stop and rest. She had plenty of stamina, but between the burst of speed it had taken them to catch up with him and not stopping at all during the night, she was feeling the toll on her energy. I was starting to think he could run forever, she whispered to Sasha. The she-wolf tapped her mind in agreement. I wouldn't say no to a bite of breakfast and some tea, Lu said, directing her words to both of them.
She was about to step into a dense grove of trees that looked like a nice place to camp, when she heard hoofbeats approaching. Without thinking, she lunged forward and hid herself in the trees, cowering next to one of the trunks. It took her a moment to realize she was hearing more than one horse. She coughed a nervous laugh and stepped out from behind the tree. Well, I guess that man had me more wound up than I was willing to admit, even to myself, she said, forcing a chuckle. She knew she hadn't fooled Sasha from the look in the she-wolf's eyes.
The half-Shade frowned at the wolf, then looked at her other friend. He was watching her and seemed to be thinking about something. What is it? she asked nervously. Perhaps he's thinking about leaving so he doesn't get caught up in whatever mess is chasing us, she thought to herself. That didn't bother her, she understood the need to protect one's self above all others, even if she wasn't that way herself. She just wished he'd wait until they were sure that man was long behind them.
She looked away and backed into the trees. Focusing on her human self, the sensation of cold water started again, this time starting at the tip of her tail and the pads of her paws. Before long she felt her tail shrinking back into her spine and stood up. She looked down just in time to see her blurred body come back into focus. She shrugged and adjusted her tunic, pulling a dead leaf from her hair. "I've never understood why, if I had to learn to shift with my clothes and gear on, do the leaves and other things I acquire in my animal forms, stick with me when I change back?" she asked, pulling a wooden comb from her packs.
She pulled it through her short, white locks, wrinkling her nose when it bogged down in a mess of knots. She attacked it with undue ferocity, smiling with grim triumph when it pulled free. When her hair was back in order, she looked around. "Well, guess it's time for that breakfast. I think it's safe to start a fire, after all, there's got to be half a dozen camps around here, he won't be able to pick us out just by our campfire smoke," she said. Neatly piling brush, twigs, and limbs into a pile, she pointed at the lot and said "Brisingr." A brief flare of silver fire formed in the heart of the flames, then changed to more natural colors as it started to hungrily consume the tinder.
Blake scowled, staring at the animal that had hindered his progress. Sometime during the night while he was charging down the road, his horse had thrown a shoe. In the relatively rough terrain of the forest, it hadn't taken long for it to go lame. The chestnut stood before him now, sides heaving, standing awkwardly as it tried to keep weight off of it's lame foot. "Well that's that. Off to the sale for you," he snarled in frustration. He had been so close to finding her!
He grabbed the mare's reins and tugged sharply on them, heading back to town to find a suitable replacement.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur watched as Illuna backed into the trees and Sasha followed her. Then he found his own sheltered area. Slowly he found that piece of humanity that pulled him back into his human form. His skin itched as the hair shrunk into him, his jaw cracked as it was pulled back into itself, his spine felt like it was on fire and within moments he was more human than wolf, and he was in a cold sweat on the leafy floor. His cloak feel about him and it took the usual amount of time until he could regain the strength to stand. As he began to dress himself he felt his leg muscle tighten Well at least my legs don't hurt as bad as I thought they would from the running He stood tall and stretched himself out before he looked through his things. I am forever thankful I learnt the spell that keeps my things in my cloak He smiled seeing everything was still intact. Reaching in for an apple he nit into and located Illuna and Sasha as Illuna began a fire. The warmth felt good and stood with hands facing the fire for a few moments.
After awhile Illuna set about her business so Úlfur located his map and compass. He turned to Illuna and pointed out where he guessed they were. "I'd say we covered just under half the distance from Belatona to Kuasta in a single night, not bad." He smiled, proud of their progress already made. He reached for his water skin as he began to judge where would be the best route through the Spine. To follow Leona Lake all the way to Toark River would take too long, as would be to head to Feinster and waiting for a boat. He looked up at the mountains in the distance. Another few leagues and we'll hit the other foot hills, and there is bound to be game trails. I reckon I could make it through Illuna was preparing her breakfast but from what he had seen he did not doubt her ability to cross through the mountains. Looking towards the horizon he noticed the peaks dipped a little bit to the north. "I think that's our best bet on making it through, other than going to Terim or Feinster, which I'd rather not. What do you think, straight through the mountains? It should only take a day of two?" He gazed at his new companions once more thinking to himself about how a rider would have trouble getting a horse through the mountains, but not saying it out loud

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Lu looked in the direction he was pointing, thinking it through. "Yes, I suppose that is the quickest way, and the easiest too. You and Sasha will have no trouble getting through on your paws, and I can always fly overhead to scout," she said after a minute. She was pleased he had chosen this way, from what she knew of the mountains, it would be nearly impossible to get a horse through them without following the roads. And since they themselves weren't planning on taking the roads, their pursuer couldn't.
Which means he will either have to go slowly to avoid injuring his horse, or leave it behind entirely, in which case he'll still be slow. We could easily make it through the mountains and disappear before he makes it through, Sasha said, plopping down beside Lu. The dancing flames made her deep blue eyes sparkle brilliantly.
Illuna smiled and scratched the white wolf's ruff. "We agree, that is the best route. Do you want to sleep before we leave, or get started right after breakfast?" she asked. She tossed the werewolf an orange, peeling one for herself. "Eat that while I cook," she ordered him. She reached into her bags and pulled out a pack of fruit-filled dough balls. Rummaging through the bags again, she found a lightweight, flat piece of metal that she placed over part of the fire. When it was hot, she put four of the balls of dough on the pan.
"Next up, tea," she muttered to herself. She untied a small metal tea pot from the side of her bag and filled it with water with a quick spell. When it was resting over the fire, she sat back and looked at Ulfur. "Now we wait for those biscuits to cook and the tea water to boil."
Blake looked up at the sky, gauging the time. The sun was just barely peeking over the horizon. He smiled grimly. He hadn't lost as much time as he had thought he would when he went back to the village for a remount. He nudged the bay with his heels, eyeing the ground as they went. It had been relatively easy to find the spot where he had seen the three wolves, and easier still to follow the trail they had left. Up ahead he could see the numerous smoke trails that marked the travelers heading to the city. One of them belonged to his prey.
The hunter smiled cruelly and looked at the ground once more.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur had to look up quickly to grab the fruit flying towards his face, he sniffed the citrus fruit enjoying it's smell before he began to cut the skin off. "As long as we don't push ourselves as hard as last night I will suffice to make it to the rim of the mountains, and a rest before we start climbing the mountains is a better idea than when we start to slip down the edge of one." He finished his orange and placed the peelings by his map as he reached for his water-skin again. "So if this cult used the Ancient Language 'Garm' should be in the name, or 'Shrrg' if they are more inclined towards the dwarves, but I doubt that. If on the other hand they had their own dialect of any other language well then I will be at a disadvantage." He began mixing other words with 'Garm' to see if anything would click. Garm... Arget... Garmarget..... Argetgarm.... Du Argetgarm.... Hmmm The Silver Wolf, it has a nice ring to it, and it sounds familiar. "I think the mountain may be called Du Argetgarm" Even as he said it aloud a chill shook along his spine, like a feather gently running along it. Well that is strange. Whether it is a good or bad sign is yet to be seen. He noticed Sasha gazing at him and he knew she had seen his reaction to the name. He nodded at the wolf and looked at the steam slowly rising from the kettle and the orange flame beneath it. "My mother used to know about forty different types of tea, each and every one was to calm you in some sense." As the flames crackled his mind drifted to the man's eyes once more. "Tell me Illuna, yesterday you mentioned hunters, do you know of anyone who would hunt you?"

Re: Riches in the Shadows
"Du Argetgarm? Well that does sound like a good name for a lot of wolf and moon worshipers. Hmmm... All things considered, we might want to keep our wits about us when we reach their temple. What with my tattoo and you're being a werewolf, they might not be so keen to let us leave. These types of people tend to be rather odd when it comes to their beliefs and their gods," Lu said, peeling her own orange. She plucked one of the segments from the tangy fruit and popped it in her mouth. The half-Shade mumbled contentedly, it was perfectly tangy with just the right amount of sweet.
She loosened another slice of fruit and looked around at Sasha, the white she-wolf enjoyed the occasional piece of orange. Lu cocked her pale eyebrow at her friend, she was watching Ulfur closely, not even blinking her eyes. "What are you doin?" she asked her, nudging her with her foot. The wolf blinked and looked at her. Nothing, she said, sticking her nose forward and gently snapping up the offered fruit slice.
Illuna frowned at her companion, then mentally shrugged. If it was important, she would have told me, she thought to herself. "Well, I know about three different kinds. One for in the morning, one for lunch and dinner, and another for any other time I feel like it," she said, chuckling. "Be thankful for this mixture, I'm a bear in the morning without it," she added, throwing a packet of dried herbs into the now boiling water.
She jerked in surprise, her hand twitching and sending her second fruit slice flying into the fire. She cursed and grabbed for it, but it slipped through her fingers and fell into the flames anyway. The smell of burned oranges filled the air. Lu wrinkled her nose and looked at Ulfur. "Can I name anyone off the top of my head? Well, aside from my sister when I've done something to annoy her, no," she said. And it was true, she honestly didn't know the name or names of whoever was chasing her. She only knew there was someone.
Blake allowed himself a small smile as he rode away from the second to last camp he needed to check. It had been full of merchants and refugees, but not the one he sought. Which meant that she had to be at the last campfire he could see, which was maybe an hour's easy ride away. Setting the location of the smoke firmly in his mind, he turned his horse towards it and spurred it into a steady trot.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur read through his notes on the religion and smiled as Illuna described just how easily they would fit in with the remnants of the cult, if any still existed they'd believe they were demi-gods or such, sent from the heavens to reap the souls of the non-believers and bless the faithful. He had heard of it happening before, when powerful magicians would convince simple folk to bend knee and worship them, the idea of doing such a thing sicken him, Removing someone's free will, why is man so easily corrupted. "Would it really be so horrible to be treated as a queen for a short while?" Úlfur gazed at Illuna over his map, "And I'm sure they would have a place for Sasha too" The prospect was a humorous one, but he couldn't help thinking he'd need tooth and claw to get out if any of the worshippers were still around, especially if an item he was looking for was there, it would be too valuable to let him take alive.
The scent of the herbs being brought to a boil reminded him of his family, and his eyes betrayed his sadness. All these years have passed and I will never forgive myself, but I wonder now, would yous forgive me? Mother? Father? Little Brother? I am truly sorry and I pay for it with this curse but surely I have paid my dues by now, have I not suffered isolation long enough? Almost three decades have gone by, a decade for each of you in return for what I stole. He took a deep breath and focussed himself once more, when he returned his focus the smell of burning fruit was in the air. Illuna's tense body betrayed that she too was deep in thought. Úlfur stood up straight and tall and stretched his legs. He walked around the camp a few times and then decided to pack his stuff. When he was almost done he reached for a drink and finished his water skin. He held the water skin high and turned it upside down "Hmmm, I shall be back in a short moment, I want to refill this before we leave." He located a small well of clean water not too far from the camp where travellers could take there fill. He pulled the basin up and in moments he had a full skin. He then decided to throw water on his neck and face, it was a wake up call that he was in need of. Maybe the tea will be ready and we will set out soon. As he made his way back to camp he could smell a new scent in the air, just underneath the burnt orange Steel... well yes there are a group of travellers around, but also blood, freshly spilled blood too Realisation crept along his spine like an ice cube and he hurried back towards camp Well tea is out of the question

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Illuna looked at Ulfur severely, frowning at him. "Yes it would be, not only because it would be a lie and it's wrong to make people treat you in such a way, but because it would be unhealthy to encourage their delusions," she said. It worried her a bit that he would even ask such a question until it occurred to her that he was testing her. Well I hope I passed, she snorted to Sasha.
She waved vaguely at him as he walked out of the camp. "You can drink all the water you want, but I'll have my tea if it's all the same to you," she said gleefully, rubbing her hands together in anticipation before pulling a mug from her packs. She carefully poured herself a cupful and sat there savoring the warmth leaching into her hands from the fired clay. When it had cooled sufficiently, she took a drink and sighed happily.
She had just finished her first cup and was about to pour herself a second when Ulfur charged back into camp, his face pale and tight. "Ulfur? What's wrong?" she asked, startled.
Blake spurred his horse, forcing it to move even faster down the road. He was so close he could almost taste it. There was a wild look of exultation on his face, revealing the savage glee he felt in finally being on the threshold of capturing one of his enemies. The wind shifted and he smelled the smoke from her fire, and something else like burned fruit.

Úlfur quickly looked around the camp, everything was as he left it. "He's coming and I doubt it's for your tea."He threw his pack onto his back "Quickly grab you're things, we have to leave, like five minutes ago" Pointing towards the flames he reached within himself Brisingr eldrvarya ramr The flames leapt around the camp, it began to consume the trees. Hopefully that keeps him busy. Úlfur began his change and within moments the same large grey wolf as before was on the his paws, hackles on edge as he tried to locate the scent of the man. The fire was spreading rapidly among the trees now. Burning all traces of their camp from that day. He waited a few seconds for Illuna to get ready and then took off towards the pass he had seen earlier. It looks like we won't get to take it easy today so.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Lu's face blanched and she jumped to her feet, hastily dumping the contents of her cup and the teapot. Slinging them into her pack, she started scrambling around grabbing their belongings. "Here, eat this! There's nothing in it that will make your wolf form sick, and it will keep you going for hours," she said, grabbing one of the not-quite-done rolls from beside the fire and shoving it between his teeth. She grabbed one for herself and then shoved the other two and the pan inside her bag as their campfire spread. Her heart panged guiltily as she watched it devour the trees nearby.
She shook her head and focused on her wolf form. She barely noticed the tingling sensation or falling forward and catching herself, she was waiting to feel the bite of an arrow or sword. She made the change quicker than she ever had before and ran after Ulfur, her small white paws flying over the ground. She looked over her shoulder and saw Sasha bringing up the rear, her nose almost brushing the tip of Illuna's tail.
Who is this guy Sasha? she asked, bewildered.
I don't know, came the grim reply.
Blake laughed uproariously, pounding his fist against his thigh as he sat on his horse in the middle of the blaze, surveying the damage happening around him. It was obviously a plot to confuse him as to the direction his prey had went and it might have worked, had he not entered the clearing in just enough time to see the tip of a white tail disappearing into the bushes. He stopped laughing suddenly, his pale face void of any emotion. He sat there like that for a moment, his horse quivering with fear, it's eyes rolling, as the forest burned around him.
"Yah!" he yelled suddenly, gouging it's sides with his spurs. The startled animal leaped forward and plowed through a half-burned bush. "I'm coming for you!" he yelled over the flames, his eyes glowing madly in the light.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur heard the horse galloping not too far behind them Dammit I was hoping the fire would lose him. his wolfish face grew concerned. Wolves could normal out run a horse but Úlfur felt that this man would run the the beast to death to keep his advantage. He heard the man shouting out towards them as the girls caught up with him. You go on ahead, and don't stop until you hit the mountain pass. With that Úlfur slowed down and turned. Barrelling towards the man and his horse. Stupid, stupid idea. Just as the horse came forward Úlfur launched himself into the air and knocked the man off his steed. They rolled together as they hit the ground and the horse ran off. Úlfur growled and bared his teeth at the man with the maroon eyes. He jumped back away from the stranger and set off into the woods once more at full pace. Gods why did I do that?! He could hear the thuds of the other wolves within a few moments. Their scent led him to them quite soon. So I ran into our friend and he's sorry he missed you. The sound of their paws was the only thing they could hear for a short while and Úlfur was glad, for the time being anyway.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Blake was blind to everything but the image of the white wolf running through his mind, a maniacal giggle bubbling up in his throat. As it was, neither he nor his horse noticed the giant grey wolf until it was already flying through the air at them. It collided with his chest, knocking the breath from his body. Blake gasped and tried to roll as he fell. He hit the ground hard and felt the ground shake as his horse turned tail and fled, driven half-crazy by the snapping flames and growling wolf at his heels. He snarled breathlessly and jumped to his feet, a knife in his hand. Orange eyes raked the flames for a glimpse of the wolf coming to attack him again, but it was gone.
He howled with rage and punched a burning tree trunk, ignoring the searing pain as the flesh on his knuckles and hand blistered. "I'll find you, you mangy beast! I'll have your hide for a cloak!" he screamed after the beast, wherever it was. He turned and ran after his horse, his cloak held over his nose and mouth so he could breathe.
Did he now? Well I hope you told him we're sorry we missed him, maybe next time, Illuna said, chuckling lightly in relief. She slowed her run, then stopped and looked back at the flames. We should make sure this doesn't spread any farther, she said. Breaching the magical barrier in her mind, she allowed the magic to flow through her. A quick spell in the Ancient Language was all it took to bind the flames to the area they had already consumed. Another lilting flow of words resounded in her mind, and the spell altered to take it's energy from the trees marking the boundary.
There, we can go now, she said, turning and running, though not so fast as before.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur couldn't help but let a little barking laugh out either. Good work now, lets go before he finds his poor mare, I was thinking of biting it but I didn't have the heart. The thing will have nightmares about the flying wolves for the rest of it's life he ran lightly beside Illuna and Sasha as they cut a path through the forest together. His mind wandered as the trees flew past, soon he was wondering if they should not abandon the quest and get the girls to safety. He knew his own home was no good for it but maybe in Du Weldenvarden, although the elves were not fond of humans they would help one such as Illuna. But they would test her abilities too, they are a calculated race and if they deemed her too strong she couldn't leave again. This man, he is the problem and solution. he was debating to himself and it was getting no where.
They reached the mountain edges as dusk fell and the sky began to dim.Let's rest once more, we'll find a cave or something and then we'll continue on okay? They foot hills were barren of caves but they soon found one deep enough so as to hide most of the light from a fire. This time Úlfur broke away for only a moment and changed back while still running. He stumbled only slightly and soon was at the mouth of the cave. "i'll busy myself with the food this time, you keep and Sasha keep watch, I'll shout when it's ready." He shooed the two white wolves as he lit the fire and began rummaging for the needed supplies for a stew. As he sat and stirred the stew he began to think of potential allies he knew who would look after Illuna and get her to safety. There was always that scholar in Teirm, oh what was his name... Or that sailor in Feinster, no... hmmm I've heard of a Rider out on the Isles, maybe he could be of help. If this venture fails I'll probably head that way myself He reached for his pipe and weed and soon had was puffing away in the smoky cave. Reaching out with his mind he found Sasha and Illuna. Dinner is done, make your way back soon

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Illuna ran swiftly and lightly beside Sasha and Ulfur, her heart surprisingly light knowing it would be days before she had to worry about the man with the strange orange eyes again. They ran for most of the day, and Illuna was tired and footsore when Ulfur finally suggested a stop. She wearily agreed to keep watch while he cooked and trotted to the edge of the cave he had found. She changed back to her human form while sitting, and had to unfold her legs from under her after she was back to normal. "I'm relying on you to sniff out any trouble," she said to Sasha, leaning against the she-wolf's warm side.
The more the sun sank below the horizon, the more energy she felt returning to her body. By the time only half of the brilliant red orb remained, she felt energized enough to sit up and poke around their surroundings with her mind. When Ulfur finally contacted her saying the meal was ready, she stood and walked into the cave. "Oh my, that smells delicious," she said, her stomach grumbling and complaining about the one sweet roll she'd had for breakfast. She opened her pack and pulled out some bowls and spoons. "Here you go," she said, ladling him out a portion. "I have a couple of those rolls left from this morning. They'll make a fine dessert after this stew," she said, digging into her own portion.
She ate quickly, then rose and walked toward the cave entrance. "I'm going to take over for Sasha so she can go hunt," she called over her shoulder, munching a sweet roll. The she-wolf had heard her and was gone by the time she reached the look-out spot. She positioned herself where she could get the most moonlight, the cool rays like a salve for her tired body. She closed her eyes and opened her mind, relying on the thoughts of the forest to alert her to danger her own eyes couldn't see.
If she had opened her eyes, she would have seen her body begin to glow softly, her tattoo brighter than the rest of her, as she pulled in more of the light.OOC: Blake's gonna be absent for a few posts, at least until it's time for him to have a bad day.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur had no problem resting for the moment and was happy to have eaten a decent meal. When Illuna left him be to go take watch he took out his journal and started adding to it. He recounted his thoughts on the cult, the pain increase in his transformations and the strange new man who was hunting them, all the time running a monologue to himself. Humph where my pelt shall he. His mind wandered to what he knew about Kuasta and the nearby mountains. He had visited there once to get supplies on his way to Feinster from Narda on boat but it was not a long stay and he didn't know much about the people. His mind was bogged down by their huntsman most of all. He felt like iron when I hit him, and he is quick too. I was barely out of his reach before he was up with a knife in hand. I'd much rather avoid a fight with him, even with back up. Úlfur was now certain the man was not seeking him, he was too focussed on Illuna and Sasha to even notice Úlfur charging at his horse. I wonder what lies in her past. She mentioned a sister, I wonder if it is a sibling dispute, although I doubt it one could be more Shade than the other. He though of his own brother and realised that he was being stupid to think a sister would send such a man after her own kin. No this is something else, something deeper. Maybe her father caused some trouble on one of his trips.
The night grew longer as Úlfur wallowed in his thoughts, he decided to go ask Illuna a bit more about her sister as he reached the watch out post he seen her glowing faintly silver. My, my she is full of secrets. If the worshippers of Morrigan see this the really will believe she is their goddess. As he watched a crazed idea came to mind. That would not be an entirely bad thing either, it would save her from this huntsman. He decided to keep this idea as a last resort and strolled over to where Illuna lay. "I reckon we have a short while until Sasha comes back, so tell me, you mentioned a sister earlier on. Where is she in all of this?"

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Lu could feel Ulfur approaching through the minds of the plants and bugs in his path, but his loud voice still startled her. She twitched and opened her eyes, blinking and trying to get them to adjust. When she could finally see him through the dark, she frowned at him. Why is his face lit up? she wondered, then looked down. She rolled her eyes and doused the light, though the moonbeams clung to her and were reluctant to go as she wasn't fully restored yet. They faded slowly, giving her enough time to think about what he had asked.
"My sister? You know, I'm not exactly sure, except that she's out that direction somewhere," she said, waving a vague hand towards the west. "What do you want to know about her for?" she asked, frowning at him.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
"Just that way yeah?" Úlfur mimicked her motion and gazed out West as he did it. "You have a sibling in this world and you only know which direction she lies in? Well times have changed since I was young." A distant look came into his eyes as he thought of his lost brother. "I was thinking, this man had his chance at me, twice now I've been closest to him and he has ignored me like a common mutt. Unfortunately Illuna he is after you." He paused for a moment to let it sink in, but he had a sneaking suspicion she already knew this. "So either you have royally ticked someone off so much they hired a magically altered killer after you, or your sister irritated him so you are his way to her..... Or it is your father's past seeking blood to be repaid." He took a slow breath and stared into the stars. "I doubt you have many enemies, I'm sure Sasha would see to that. As for you're father, well he is dead how long now? So if it someone seeking revenge on his spirit they have spent a long time and effort perfecting their scheme. Therefore my mind fell to your sibling. I thought perhaps she had caused some trouble and you knew about it. After all you were quite eager to get out of Belatona. You were calm until you noticed how late it was getting, and then you found the quickest route out of that place." He looked long and hard into her face, judging how she would react. "I'm staying, and I'll help against this man however I can, but the more we know. Well it may give us an advantage."

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Lu stared at him for a long while, swirling her finger through the dirt by her side while she thought. Magically altered? Well that would certainly explain the eyes. I've heard of spells, and mixtures of spells, that would do that, she thought to herself, wondering how Ulfur would know the enemy had such spells placed on them. She finally sighed, and stopped tracing shapes in the dirt, instead using her hand to rub her face tiredly. "First off, my father is very much alive. Secondly, my sister and I are twins, I can always point you in her direction, even if I haven't heard from her in a long while. As for if she may have royally irritated someone... Well, if you had met Soleil, you wouldn't have to ask. You're right, I don't have many enemies, in fact, I don't have any that I can name. Not because Sasha takes care of them, but because I don't tend to make them. If I do I try to reconcile," she said. Her mouth twisted in distaste, this was showing more of her hand than she really wanted to.
"I wasn't really in that big of a hurry to leave Belatona, at least not before I sensed trouble on the way. I always travel at night. As you might have noticed," here she stopped and lifted her hand, her pale skin glowing again, "I have certain advantages at night," she continued, pausing for breath.
She stopped again and looked down, shooting him a glance from under her stark white bangs. The half-Shade chewed her lip, thinking about her last, well almost last, secret. "The answer you seem to be seeking, is yes, this man is after me. And it's not because of my sister, or something I've done. It's about something my father did before he gained control of himself, or rather re-gained control. Let's just come right out and say it. My father is a Shade. I am the product of what very well should be, and used to be, a monster good for nothing but death and destruction. But even before he lost control of his body and powers, my father was no ordinary man. He slowly fought back against the spirits in his body, but not before they committed many evil deeds by his hand. It is one of these actions that has come back to haunt him now. Through us, his enemies are striking at him," she said, still not looking at him straight on. She paused, waiting to see what he would say.
Sasha quietly reentered the clearing, bits of rabbit fur and blood staining her muzzle and paws.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
"Well I would be a hypocrite if I ever judged a man by what he has done when not in control of himself. After all I too know what the struggle of ones inner demons can do, and what a lost of control can mean." He sighed wearily I should be getting to the age of relaxing and reading and here I am fending off Shade Hunters and seeking old cults "I will help as much as I can, but I am not as strong a swordsman as I once was. If it comes to a fight I will try strip his defenceless and destroy whatever spells are upon him. That is the most I can hope to accomplish." With that Sasha wandered to beside Illuna, the remains of her kills still covering her muzzle. Good hunt?
After a few seconds Úlfur looked into the skies. "We should head out soon, I reckon two nights and we'll be at the gates of Kuasta if the mountains are kind to us but I doubt it so we should get at it as soon as possible." He took his leave and began clearing up the cave, making sure to leave nothing that would point the Huntsman in their direction. He walked back to the clearing and waited for Illuna and Sasha to join him

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Illuna smiled gratefully at Ulfur and nodded. If ever those words about inner demons were true for anyone, it would be him, she said to Sasha, standing up and stretching. All of the shapeshifting had her muscles feeling a bit wobbly, but nothing she couldn't handle. The white wolf huffed in agreement and started licking her paws and muzzle, trying to get off as much gore as she could before they started running again. "How long do you think it will be before he catches up to us? He seems like a rather determined enemy," she asked, stopping to lean against a tree in the clearing before the cave.
She stood like that for a moment, then reached over her head and grabbed a branch, pulling herself into the tree. She crouched on her branch for a moment, peering down at her friends, then started to change. Although the shift was accompanied by the familiar blurring of her form and the sensation of water being poured over her, this time instead of feeling warm fur sprout from her skin, it was down followed by a sheer white pattern of feathers tracing down her skin. The feather started popping from her skin, her arms bending at strange angles. Her body shrank until it felt non-existent compared to it's usual side. As she shrank, the branch under her lifted, adjusting to her ever-decreasing weight.
When the change was finally finished, a small white owl with bright maroon eyes was peering down at Ulfur and Sasha. I thought this might be an even easier way to confuse him. He'll be looking for three sets of pawprints, and no matter how hard he tries, he couldn't track a bird through the air, even if he knew I'd shifted forms, she said, raising her pale wings to the sky. She fell forward off the the branch, but her wings caught her and pulled her up towards the sky before she'd gone more than a foot.
With the superior night-vision of the owl, she could see almost everything within the forest, which was an extremely comfortable thought.
Sasha watched Illuna flying through the trees, a worried whine rising in her throat. She had felt much better with Lu on the ground with her and Ulfur, where the two of them could protect her. Now she was in the sky, with only herself to watch her back. The blue-eyed wolf took off through the trees, trying her best to not leave an easy trail to follow. While she ran, she kept one eye glued to the ghostly form above.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
OOC: Sorry for the delay, been busy last few days.
IC:"That depends on whether he kills the poor beast he rides or if he will let it rest." Úlfur felt the familiar tingling along his spine and then the fire began to race through his body. His bones began to stretch and break into the right shape, his jaw merged into the form of a muzzle and hair began to sprout from all areas of his body. He hit the floor on all fours and he was dazed for a moment. Then his sense kicked in. Everything was put into a shaper focus then before. He was finished before Illuna and decided to watch her complete her transformation That skill of yours comes in very handy. And indeed he would be some tracker to catch you in the sky. He nudge Sasha who was looking down hearten If anyone can escape him it will be her. With that they ran towards the mountains edge. Within a few moments they found a place that gave access into the Spine. An old huntsman trail. This is our best bet. Illuna fly above and pick out the best path for us will you? And hoot if you see trouble. With that Úlfur began to push through the undergrowth and over the unsteady rocks. There must have be rock slide sometime ago, take care where you step Sasha

Re: Riches in the Shadows
In all honesty, he didn't seem too concerned about the animal we first saw him on. They are just a means to an end for him, I doubt he'd feel much remorse if he runs his new mount to death, Lu said back to Ulfur. It disgusted her to think about it, considering how close she was with all types of animals from her shapeshifting. She flew silently through the forest, her small wings making barely a whisper as they glided through the air. She tilted to the right slightly and circled around behind her allies, then checked her speed so she was keeping pace with them.
Yes it does. More than once I've escaped a distasteful situation by shifting to a mouse and slipping through a hole. It certainly confounds my enemies, she chuckled. Rockslides you say? Hmmm... Ulfur, how badly do you want to keep ahead of our mystery pursuer? Because I was thinking along the lines of ambush and broken bones. That would certainly slow him down, the half-Shade said, images of an avalanche of heavy stones playing through her mind.
Blake lunged forward and grabbed at the loose reins hanging from his horse's neck. "Stupid beast! Look at what you've done! I almost had her!" he snarled, chucking the reins savagely. The horse snorted in pain and tried to drag it's head away, but he pulled again and it went still. He stomped forward and flung himself in the saddle, digging in with his spurs before his feet were even in the stirrups. The bay jumped forward, charging through the trees.
The orange-eyed man grinded his teeth together as he thought through the last few hours. It had taken him the rest of the day to track his horse down and catch it. In the distance he could see the smoldering remains of the fire, which hadn't covered nearly as much ground as he'd thought it would. He assumed the little she-witch had spelled it somehow to keep it from spreading. He couldn't fathom why. As the daughter of a Shade, she would be all for destruction, not preventing it.
When it was finally too dark to risk venturing further and passing up whatever remains of a trail he could find, Blake stopped and built a fire. He didn't bother to feed or untack his horse; It had eaten plenty and had plenty of rest after it had run away from him, in his opinion at least. Before long his blood was boiling again as he remembered his disgrace at the hands of the wolves and little twit, and he doused his fire, angrily rolling himself up in his blankets to get whatever sleep he could before his early start to catch up to them.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Úlfur chuckled deeply and it came out like a hoarse bark. Mischievous little mind you have on you Illuna. The rocks are already stable and it wouldn't be hard to cause another avalanche. Once it began though it would be neigh impossible to stop and unlike some, me and Sasha cannot fly above the danger. He did not like the idea of being made into a fine wolf paste. If we find a valley of the right design there we will set a trap. But it will mean waiting for the hunter to catch up on us to spring it, are you willing to wait and risk it? Úlfur would not make this decision as it was Illuna's life at stake, but he felt their well earned lead would already mean little in the mountains. I reckon we keep it as a plan for when we can see the end of the mountains. He could never over take us on the plains between Kuasta and the mountains edge. A piece of slate slipped from under foot and Úlfur twisted his ankle. A howl escaped his lips before he could stop himself Dammit, give me a moment Úlfur had to close his mind and focus. To change back to a human with the injure could lead to him maiming himself. Yet to heal it he had to use magic without uttering the Ancient Language. After a couple of deep breaths he gathered his courage and began to chant the words of healing in his mind. Only focussing on them and their meaning. His skin prickled but soon he could walk properly. Damn delay. Quickly now and lets hope I don't have to do that again. As they were running a new smell hit Úlfur. Illuna do you see smoke or any such sign of life?

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Lu cocked a non-existent eyebrow at Ulfur. Do you really think I would be so dumb as to spring a trap when the two of you are still in the danger zone? she asked indignantly, the feathers around her neck bristling. You're right though, we should wait and use it at the end of the mountains, where we can take off across the flatlands, she added after a minute. She squawked in surprise when Ulfur suddenly howled in pain. She almost careened into a tree, but managed to slip around the trunk, the bark tickling the feathers on her back.
By the time she was steady and could see him again, he had already healed the wound. You know, I could have healed that for you, she said, eyeing the wound critically, judging how well a job he had done. After a moment she clicked her beak in satisfaction and soared in the direction they had been going. The half-Shade beat her wings against the air, rising silently above the trees. She circled once, looking for smoke. She hissed, about twenty miles back the way they had came a thin plume of smoke was rising above the trees. Even as she watched, the ribbon of grey smoke dissipated, indicating it had been put out.
Locking her wings to her sides, she dropped back to the treetops before flaring her wings. She soared passed her friend's heads, an alarmed hoot escaping her throat. There was a campfire back down the trail a ways. Whoever it was put it out while I was watching, I doubt they saw me though, she said.
Sasha growled, her head whipping towards the smoke as if she could see the fire-maker from so far away. We need to leave, now, she said, settling into a loping run.
Blake twitched awake in his blankets, tense as his ears probed the darkness. He had thought he'd heard something. Just as he was about to roll over and go back to sleep, he heard a faint bark of pain. He sat up with a jolt, a grim smile on his face. Without pausing to think, he rolled out of bed, hastily folded his blankets up, and tied them to the back of his saddle. He was on his horse and heading for the source of the noise before a minute had passed.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Thank you but I'm quite capable myself. His leg was still tender but he could keep apace with the others. When Illuna revealed what she had seen Úlfur was gripped with a sudden fear of the huntsman again. And then Sasha set off in such a haste that Úlfur couldn't help but believing that she too felt as he did. Do you think he could really catch us in the mountains? Úlfur was now ashamed for howling and decided to push himself harder for his mistake. In his mind he could hear a horse but he knew that was simply his mind playing tricks on him.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Sasha hesitated when Ulfur asked her if she thought the horseman could catch up to them. I'm not sure. Normally I would say no, but he seems so determined to catch her, I can't say for sure. I would like to know what demons there are that drive him on so, she said slowly, worry coloring her thoughts. She saw Ulfur limping on his injured paw and frowned at him. You're not going to do us any good if you run your foot off. If you need to stop, Illuna can find us somewhere to hide for the night. She's very good at concealing our sleeping holes, she said to him.
Lu was listening to Ulfur and Sasha's conversation in her mind, but her own thoughts were elsewhere. She ghosted through the treetops, the tips of her wings making hardly a whisper as they brushed against leaves and branches. She looked below her and adjusted her speed, slowing so she wasn't so far ahead of the others. Normally she might have been out front looking for an ambush, but they knew the danger was behind, not before, them.Blake sawed on the reins, jerking his mount to a stop. Before it's hooves had stopped sliding against the dirt, he was jumping from the saddle, bent over as he inspected the ground. Here was what he had been looking for: the tracks of three wolves. He crouched down and followed the direction of the trail with his eyes. He smiled and stood, walking confidently and leading his horse behind him. He didn't expect to find her here, he would have been disappointed if she had been, so it was no surprise when he entered the small, empty clearing with the cave at the back.
He tied his reins around a low-hanging branch, then walked into the cave. The smell of burned wood assailed his nostrils. He knelt next to the fire and lightly touched a palm to the ashes. Still hot, I just missed her, he thought to himself. He walked back outside and scoured the ground for more signs.
He found a spot where she must have taken watch, there was a slight depression where she had sat and waited. There was another depression nearby suggesting one of her companions had approached, possibly to speak with her or relieve her on watch. A few small drops of blood and a single white hair showed where the she-wolf had returned from hunting, as the blood attested. The hunter crab-walked across the ground, following the half-Shade's tracks as she meandered across the clearing. He stopped beside a tree she had leaned against and looked around in confusion. This was the end of her footprints, after she leaned against the tree, she vanished.
Blake rubbed his palm against the tree, thinking foolishly for a moment she had sang herself into the wood like an elf before dismissing the idiotic notion. He narrowed his eyes and looked up into the tree, pulling himself into the canopy. He grinned maliciously, she had snagged her shirt here on a jagged piece of bark, pulling out a loose wool thread. He tugged it free and held it to his nose, breathing in the scent of warm apricots. Tucking the hair into the breast pocket of his shirt, he slid down the trunk of the tree. There was no point in looking for her sign any longer, she would have obviously shifted forms, probably to a bird or squirrel, but definitely something that wouldn't have to touch the ground to travel.
Clever, but not clever enough, he thought softly, his eyes gleaming more brightly than ever as he continued down the trail, now with only two sets of pawprints.OOC: That's alright, I understand.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
No no, don't stop on my account, my leg will be tender for only a short while and in the mean time we'll cover as much distance as possible. Úlfur gazed up at the mountain peaks. Anyway I want out of these peaks as soon as we can, I don't like being so close to Urgal villages, a large wolf like me would make a great throw rug for them, or a kill for the youngsters trying to prove themselves. Úlfur hackles raised as he though to his past run-ins with Urgal Their shamanistic beliefs make them think of me as even more cursed than the humans or dwarves do. Plus this close to finding what I need is making me eager. Which was no lie, Úlfur has visited a mass of temples, crypts, churches, graves, barrows, mansions, and so on looking for what would help him and although he was never too enthusiastic at the start of his searches the more research he done, the more hopefully he got. Úlfur sniffed at the wind and felt reassured for a moment, it wasn't long until a pack of 5 wolves broke around the next bend in the mountains. Úlfur didn't even break stride as the wolves ran towards them. He opened his mind and let them sense all that he was, the pack accepted them as friends before they had even reached each other. Although these beasts were not as intelligent as Sasha they knew that Úlfur was something special. The Alpha stepped forward and they pair had to stop to avoid collision. Just stand back for a moment he told the girls and stepped forward cautiously. The large grey Alpha wolf began sniffing him and Úlfur tensed his entire body. A moment passed then the Alpha bent knee to him. Looks like we've got some friends now Úlfur had a wolfish grin on him and he began sniffing at the rest of the pack, except a youngish, male pup whose mother stood above him. Well this will make life easier. The pack leader used senses to describe they were on a hunt, although talking to mute animals is hard Úlfur could easily understand the wolves as one of their own would. He offered them to come along and then they would give passage through the mountains. Illuna do you mind a little detour? They too are going West but until they catch their quarry they may go off course?

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Well if you're sure, then- Lu started to say, stopping abruptly at the sudden scent and sound of a pack nearby. She barely had time to register the smells before the new wolves were rounding the next curve in front of them. Illuna backflapped, tilting her wings so she slid through the air and neatly landed on a branch. Sure, no problem, have at it, she murmured, watching as the other Alpha approached Ulfur. They sniffed each other for a moment, then Ulfur turned to Sasha and her, a wide grin on his face. Actually no, this is perfect. Sure he'll know we joined up with them, but if we split off after awhile, he won't be able to know for sure it was us. It'll confuse him, she said, grinning with delight.
It has been a long time since I ran with my true brothers and sisters, I would enjoy this greatly, Sasha said, softly wagging her tail from side to side.
Blake rode slowly along the mountain path, grinding his teeth furiously at the need for the careful pace. A few miles back the road had become pitted with shallow holes and rocks; nothing he would normally fear riding across at a dead run, but in the dark with no reasonable distance to walk for a remount, he couldn't risk injuring his horse. The only good thing about it was it gave him time to closely study the tracks while thinking about how he would trap the girl, then take her to his father for their revenge.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
The wolves companionship greatly increased Úlfur's mood as he hoped the pack would throw the hunter of their trail for a bit and the safety in numbers was true among wolves. Even as an outsider these wolves would still fight to protect him and Sasha from Urgals or other creatures along the way. The pup yapped at Sasha for a bit as a young male would with any new female but eventually decide to return to the front of the pack to show his dominance over Úlfur, another day and Úlfur might have put the youngster in his place but today he was just happy to hunt with the few creatures on this planet that accepted him. He had a slight grin as he and the others sniffed out their prey. It wasn't long until one of the females found a patch that had the scent of some deer on it, a recent resting place too. The Alpha decided this was their path and released a yowl at the skies. The Hunt Begins... All the wolves broke through the underground and began racing along the trek of the scent, their footfalls were eerily soft for the speed they were travelling but this was the ways of the predator. To hunt their prey better than any other ever could. Illuna was never far behind, high in the skies and Úlfur was aware that her eyes would greatly help if the huntsman caught up with them. So far though their had been no whisper of him.

Re: Riches in the Shadows
Illuna flew silently over the pack, laughing silently at one of the pup's, who seemed quite smitten with Sasha. Eventually the youngster returned to the front of the pack. When the wolves picked up a scent, Lu ghosted up through the trees until she was in the open air, where she could follow them without having to dodge around trees.
Blake could hear a pack of wolves up ahead. From the sounds of their howls and short barks, they were teaching their pups to hunt. Which was fine by him, it meant that no matter how hungry they were, they wouldn't risk attacking someone who smelled or looked as strange as he did. He rode along in silence, ignoring the worried blowing of his mount. The farther they went the louder the packs howls seemed to become, until his horse's eyes were rolling in fear from the nearness of it.
And still Blake ignored the sounds, his eyes on the ground as he followed the tracks of his own prey.
