hey I was just reading eldest again (for like the fifth time) and i realized something... Eragon could've easily won that fight... Now before you get all mad at me think about it... Murtagh can't kill Eragon because Galbatorix needs Saphira... And the number one rule in a wizards' duel is that you can't kill someone until you've entered their mind because in that split second before they die they could kill you... But since Murtagh can't kill Eragon because they need Saphira, Eragon could've killed him because he couldn't respond with any of the words of death because he swore that he wouldn't kill him... so therefore rather than jumping towards him and trying to kill him with his sword Eragon could've just killed him with a word...

that's an interesting theory! i think the reasons eragon didn't kill murtagh number two: firstly, if you recall, in Farthen Dur, when the twins tried to probe murtagh, he resisted their efforts. eragon probably felt that he couldn't reach his mind and wasn't going to take the risk. secondly, murtagh helped eragon in a number of tight situations. if it wasn't for him, eragon never would have gotten out of prison. call it gratitude, if u will.

that's a good theory but there's some problems...
1. you don't have to enter someone's mind to use a death word on them... it's like any other spell... whether or not you've entered their mind doesn't matter...

2. when he realized Murtagh wouldn't kill himself Eragon tried to kill him with his sword... so it wasn't a problem of not wanting to kill him... he tried... but he failed... he would've killed him but Murtagh was too quick

yes he did dodge the sword... that's kinda the whole point... Eragon tried to kill Murtagh but he failed... what i'm saying is that Eragon could've used one of the death words to kill him

I think that you may have a point in eragon being able to kill murtagh but why didn't he if it would have been so easy

well he could have killed him but didnt for the already stated reasons. Now the question is what will happen next. Remimber Eragon is going to have a new weapon soon thanks to Murtagh taking Zarrock. So this was forseen by Angela. Now will Eragon got to the Vault of lost souls now or when he battles old iron bones?

basically, eragon couldve beaten murtagh if murtagh hadnt of been a coward and hid til the end of the battle. eragon is MUCH stronger than Murtagh, but eragon was just tired.

If Murtagh went together with his huge army he would have ruined Galby's dark and secret tactic. So far he seems to be trying to kill as many of his people as possible making them a good target practice for Eragon, maybe he expects rly awesome duel where he will die so his name should be remembered for ages as a name of one of the stupiddest (?) successful villains in history of Alagaesia

that'll probably be at the beginning of Brisingr where eragon gets his new weapon. and then in chapter 3 he and roran attack the ra'zac (we know this because of the excerpt given in eldest). and then the rest is the unkown that keeps some of these topics alive....

but he couldn't because he was his friend and brother!!! so yeah.

i dont care how much of a friend/brother murtagh was to eragon. if you turn against someone like that, try to kill them and their dragon, well, they deserve to be killed......

as a matter of fact, yes, i would kill my brother if he turned to the evil side and WAS TRYING TO KILL ME!!!!!! its called self-defense in the court of law and is not liably held as murder (i got that off of a TV show, in case you actually thought that i pay attention in school to know that stuff....)

and if eragon thinks that he can help murtagh, eragon is a fool.....

yes eragon could have easily killed murtaugh even without magic, murtuagh and eragon were even sword fighters before eragon became as strong and fast as an elf. plus eragon wanted to see who the other rider was and if he just killed him there would be no exictment and obvisously murtaugh has a part in the third book

but i mean if eragon was stronger (which he wouldve been if murtagh hadnt been cowardly and waited til the end) he could've easily held murtagh with magic, ripped off the mask, figured out it was murtagh, then taken it from there. he couldve held the upper hand and either killed murtagh or let him go (probly killed him.....)....


but the whole thing was stupid cuz murtaghs cowardly.....

murtaugh was stronger in magic he lifted saphira and held eragon helpless at the same time and when eragon tried to break the spell murtaugh out lasted him

well, they were matched in swords when eragon was human, but eragon became human/elf, so eragon is now stronger in swords and they are about equal in magic, murtaghs is just dark magic.....
