Mountain City
OOC: This is a private RP between DS4, Saphirarox, and myself involving a moderately complex plot, pre-planed by me, in a world created by me that parallels Alageasia dimensionally. As it stands right now it would be almost impossible for anyone else to join, but if anyone is interested then PM me and I'll see if I can work something out. I would like for the current posting order to be Me, DS4, then Saphira _______________________________________________________________
The Vilcani mountain range. One of the most beautiful places in all of Dedarath. Rolling hills covered in red-gold grass that glowed in the mid-day sun like a great king's treasury, that led gently up to the rocky slopes of the mountains themselves. Dense evergreen trees were the primary residence on the mountain sides, with a few glowroots or twisted oaks between. Beneath these mountains ran an equally beautiful network of crystal caves. Beautiful but dangerous, as it was all too easy to get lost within their dark depths. Not only that, but creatures of the dark lurked within.
For this reason the caves were a great place to escape any pursuer. As is the case of the royal reapers Kale, Rathon, and Jessa Hinote Karite, and company. Zeke Blindscale, his sister Johdzsia (Jia for short), Lyedinlel (Lee for short), Naor, with Riders Ka, Rath, and Asa; Lyssand and Darian; and Osutin Shiori. Four dragons, three Riders, two of which were Reapers; a horse, a warrior, and a magic wielding swordsman. An unlikely bunch to be traveling together, but their fate and the fate of two of their friends had become inexplicably intertwined.
Jessa Hinote Karite and Mya, a werewolf, had been taken by the sibling's uncle Gres Dorndo, the current and illegitimate king of the Reaper homeland of Dedarath. They were here to get them back. Their uncle, however, had different plans for them, the three Reaper siblings at least. He wanted them here so he could complete the Sacrifice of Tainted Spirits which would transfer their power to him and make him the closest thing to a god this land had ever seen. They knew this and didn't care. Their sister was in danger, and that was all that mattered.
At the moment the group was traveling under the Vilcani mountains, threw the crystal caves. Their goal? The mountain city of Glan'nari, the only place in all of Dedarath that Gres had not taken under his control, deeming it a wasted effort. For this reason all who wanted to oppose the king congregated there, seeking safety. Once there the group planned to make their way across Dedarath to Castle Karite in the heavily fortified city of Irestol, which was located in the middle of the Capetala Province, which was in the middle of Dedarath with heavily guarded borders. A daunting task for sure, but they didn't care. They were determined to succeed.
Their trek through the crystal caves went well for the most part, minus one cave in that nearly trapped them there forever, one of the unnamed cave-beasts attacking them while they slept (luckily Lee was a light sleeper and managed to kill it before it could do any damage), and much squabbling over food and heat and comfort and smell and other such things that become irritating after a week of traveling in a cramped space. Evenutally though, they made it out of the caves on the far side, having escaped their Royal Guard pursuers and their malkori hunting beasts. Now they faced a new challenge: finding the city. Ka and Rath knew of where it was roughly, but had never actually been there, and for all they knew it might have been moved or even destroyed by now. It was a shot in the dark, but it was a shot none-the-less.
It took them a few days of searching aimlessly threw the mountains, but they finally found it, and when the did they were nothing short of amazed. Nestled far back in the mountains, in a valley between two mountains lay the glorious city of Glan'nari. The city, however, was not an ordinary city. What made Glan'nari amazing was that it was built atop a large piece of land that looked as if it had been ripped directly from the ground beneath it, leaving a large gapping hole that would swallow all who fell into it's dark abyss. What's more is that the entire city, land and all, was floating high in the sky, hovering over the abyss by some means that Ka and Rath could not perceive. It was the larget city they had ever seen, and they were still at least a days walk away when they first spied it. They hasted to get to the city, turning the day's walk into half a day's flight.
When they first arrived they were met with a large wall that blocked their path by ground. When they tried to go over it a volley of arrows met them half way, driving them back down to the ground. Jia and Osu wanted to return a favor, but Ka and Rath advised that they remain as peaceful as possible. As soon as they touched ground again they were surrounded by a group of guards wielding straight bladed scythes and spears. Ka and Rath tried to tell them who they were but they would have none of it. Eventually the captain of the guard arrived to investigate. When they explained who they were they were met with suspicion, being told that the royal ones died long ago in a distant land. They persisted until the captain relented enough to at least allow them to prove their claims.
They were all taken inside the wall and put into holding cells, minus Ka and Rath, until their story could be verified. The captain took the brothers to an examination room where his most skilled seal-caster could examine them. Almost as soon as the reaper touched them with the revealing seal, their family crests exploded into a blinding white light so bright it seared it's image into the stone that was behind them. All who were present hit their knees and bowed immediately and stayed there until the light had died down. It was announced throughout the guard posts that the royal ones had returned, and brought friends. They were to be escorted directly to Glan'nari to see Lord Juilten. Rath asked that the captain only send news of their arrival to the Lord, as he did not want a fan-fair to announce their arrival, and that they be given at least two days of rest before they spoke with the Lord, since they had been on the run for some time. The captain did not question him, and passed the word. And soon they were being taken to their house in Glan'nari, a large estate on the far side of the city where they could rest before starting the hard part of their quest.
______________________________________________________________
Mean while, in the darkened city of Irestol, King Dorndo was sleeping when a messenger woke him. His eyes snapped open and he glared at the boy with a snarl, yelling and demanding to know what could be so important as to interrupt his sleep! The boy stammered out his message, that a few border guards had found the ones he had been hunting. Kale and Rathon Hinote Karite. Gres's snarl faded upon hearing this news, and slowly turned into a wicked smile. He rose from his bed slowly and smiled at the boy. The boy began to shiver with fear, his face ghostly white. Then, in an instant, he was reduced to ash as a pillar of fire devoured him before he could even scream. The kings pet rayvens flew from their perch on his bed to the pile of ash and began pecking at it. Gres strode over to his wardrobe and snatched his finest over coat of black leather, plated gold, and swirling silver inlay, along with his best dark black trousers and left his room. He took long strides threw the corridors of Castle Karite, smiling a devil's smile as he made his way to his guard captain's room. He blew down the door, literally, sending a spray of splintered wood and metal over the frightened sleeping man. The king snatched the man by the collar and picked him clear up out of bed, his large arms bulging a bit with his unnatural strength, and told him the news. The captain nodded, his face white as snow. He knew what the king wanted but didn't know how he was going to make it happen. Gres threw the man across the room where he hit the wall with a thud and fell to the floor, dazed but unhurt, and strode out again.
The next place Gres went was his throne room, large and ornate, done in black and red stone, with silver fixtures and large, skillfully crafted carpets. He stopped in the middle of the room still smiling like a madman, earning nervous looks from his various maids and attendants, and let loose a howl of lunatic laughter than rung off the polished throne room walls and echoed threw the whole castle, making all within flinch with fear. They knew now that their king was nearing his goal, and would do everything he could to attain it, as he was nearly obsessed with it. He laughed for a full 10 minuets before subsiding. He had one more place to visit before he could start planning the brother's capture.
He made his way down to the dungeons, deep under the castle. Here he went to two cells that were across from one another. The cells of Jess and Mya. He told them that they had company, they their rescue had come for them, and that they were doomed to fail and die by his hand to feed his power. The two of them remained as silent as statues, which was just as well to Gres, he didn't care.
Before he turned to leave, there was one more prisoner he wanted to inform of the brother's arrival. He took three more flights of stairs down that dead ended at a metal hatch in the ground. He stomped the hatch a few times to wake up its only occupant. Kicking the small viewing hatch in the door open, he looked down into the burning angry eyes of the prisoner; the eyes of his brother. Kane Hinote Karite, the rightful king. He told his brother the news. He told him that his children had finally come to die as a sacrifice for him. Anger turned to fear, then rage, then something beyond rage. With a laugh Gres kicked the hatch closed and returned up to the main castle to plan for his dear guests arrival. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ka awoke with a stretch and a yawn, sitting up in his over sized bed that was big enough for at least 4 people. His room looked as thought it belonged to a high king. Large enough to have fit his entire group, dragons included, with ease. It was covered with spectacular paintings and sculptures and carpets. 4 large stone pillars supported the high ceiling of his room, which was painted as well, each pillar as thick as two of him. Off to his left was a dark oak door that led to the hallway that led to his friends rooms. On the other side of his room was another door, made of wood and glass, that led to a large balcony over looking the lake and the large cave that their hosts had built just for Jia, Zeke, Lee, and Naor, each with their own separate sub-cave.
Ka swung his legs over the edge of the bed and let his feet rest on the magically warmed marble dias that his bed was on. After a moment he rose and walked over to the blackwood desk and chair where he had tossed his cloths the night before. He was surprised to see that they had been cleaned and pressed, fresh and good as new, and even folded. He grinned to himself. "I could get used to this..." He thought to himself, then reminded himself why he was here in the first place and grew a bit more serious again. He put on his cloths and weapons and such and went to the door. Just as he was reaching for the handle it opened slowly, making him flinch back, and in came a maid. About a head shorter than him, blond and slightly wavy hair, with the most extraordinary green-blue eyes he had ever seen. "Shes cute..." He thought to himself. "Oh! I'm sorry! I was just coming to see if you were awake yet!" He exclaimed, blushing and bowing to him as she apoligized. "It's fine, I just woke up. Why were you coming to see if I was awake? Am I needed?" He asked, curious. She rose from her bow and shook her head. "No sir, the Captain simply told me to check on you every little bit to make sure you were alright and sleeping well" She said with another bow. He waved a hand and grimaced a bit. "You don't have to 'sir' or bow to me, alright? simple answers will suffice." She straightened again and looked at him curiously. "Yes s-...ok." He nodded in approval and walked around to the table that was next to the desk. "Is everything to your liking so far?" She had refrained from using 'sir' that time he noticed. "Yes it is! Very much so. I've never seen a grander bedroom, I can't wait to see the rest of the city." He said, smiling. "A guide is ready and waiting for you to give you a tour should you wish it. Your brother, Prince Rathon, has already taken the offer and is looking around the city as we speak, as is Lady Lee and sir Osooten. Though I'm not sure of the others." She tripped a bit on Osu's name, making Ka grin a bit. "They're all up already?" He asked, getting a nod in reply. "It's nearly an hour past noon now sir." Ka blinked. Had he really been that tired? To sleep all day? He shrugged it off and looked around the room.
Just then his stomach gave a loud growl. He blushed a bit and clutched his stomach, grinning up at the maid, who giggled at his reaction. "The kitchen is down the stairs on the left and threw the two double doors at the end of the hall when you're ready to eat." She said, seeming more comfortable now. He nodded in thanks. "I think I'll check that out first..." The maid smiled and inclinded her head. "Very well. If you have no more need of me I'll be going now, but if you need something just call and someone will be on hand to give you what ever you need." She said, and turned to leave when he waved his hand, indicating he didn't need anything. "Wait! I didn't catch your name..." He was curious about her, and was thinking he might like to speak with her again. She paused in the doorway and glanced back. "Aeren..." She said simply. Ka tested her name once, enjoying how it sounded. "I like it..." She blused at his compliment and bowed a little. "Thank you sir, I'll be going now..." And she was gone to do some other duty.
After a few minuets Ka wandered down to the kitchen, several maids, butlers, guards, and other people of the estate bowing to him with a 'good afternoon sir!' as he passed by, to each he responded with a polite, if awkward 'good afternoon' and continued on his way.
His trip to the kitchen was a pleasant one, full of pleasant sights and smells of wondrous food and drink. The cooks gave him enough food to feed him for a week and pointed him in the direction of the dinning hall, which was just as ornate as the rest of the place with a long dark wood table down the middle. Just as he sat down to eat, a thought occurred to him: Jia had not spoken to him since he woke up. He cast his mind around for her, keeping caution on who might try to listen in or worse. Once he found her he gave her a gentle nudge and a sense of curiosity as to where she was and what she was doing, but not a prying sense of 'need to know', just a simple curiosity.

Re: Mountain City
Jia dozed in the sun on a large boulder, her wings outspread, soaking up the heat into her scales. It felt good to simply bathe in the warmth of the day, she hadn't been able to do so for a while. Her eyes fluttered open from a gentle familiar touch against her mind. She hummed softly and repositioned her head on her claws, closing her eyes once more. She gave him an impression of warmth and sun and heat, relaxation and content, and a picture of herself sunning on the boulder, her golden scales sparkling gloriously like a thousand golden gems. She sent him an inquisitive thought, asking if he would like to join her once he had finished his meal, and the pleasure she would feel if he did.

Re: Mountain City
Naor circled above their strange mountain refuge, eyeing the tiny moving figures below. She was intrigued by the Reaper people and their strange appearances that made them so much more interesting for her to look at than normal two-legs, like Asa's own kind. She dipped lower to watch an unruly herd of children barreling through the streets, playing a game with a ball. She watched them for awhile to try and determine what game they were playing, then gave up after deciding it was like no human sport she had ever witnessed. She decided that she would ask either Ka or Rath about it later, if she remembered to.
It's almost like the stick-ball game I used to play in Teirm when I was a small boy, Asa said, peering over her shoulder and watching them as she spiraled back up into the clouds.
Boy maybe, small I doubt very much, Naor said cheekily, writhing through the air and slightly unseating her big-boned Rider. They had opted for the freedom of flying without a saddle for their short flight together, and Asa was wearing leather breeches to protect himself from her rough scales. Without the saddle's safety straps to hold him onto her back, he had to grab for one of her neck spikes to catch his balance.
Easy now, he laughed, the sound bubbling up out of him and building to a roar of delight and mirth. He was in his very favorite place, and there was nothing today that could disturb his joy. For the time being, he could simply enjoy being a Rider and the beautiful creature that gave him that title.
Darian was in one of the gardens of the palace where they were being housed with Rath and Ka. She had been here for a few hours, reading a musty old tome about the history of Dedarath. For the most part she had been left alone to her reading, aside from Lyssand quietly cropping the grass a few feet away and the occasional swish of his tail scattering flies from his sides. Now though, she could hear giggling and whispering some twenty feet away, coming from bushes covered in blue and white flowers that smelled like honeysuckle.
Her lips twitched for a moment in a smile. The children of the city were fascinated by her, as were most of the adults. After everyone had changed back into their normal selves, herself included, she still had a sparkling layer of ice across her skin. She had thought at first it was a side effect of the Changing Seal that the Reapers had cast on her before they left for Dedarath, but now she wasn't so sure. She didn't know what it meant, but she had a feeling it was something to do with her lack of control over the water in the atmosphere of Dedarath.
Whatever was causing it, the shimmer of her skin was quite interesting to look at, and she often was accosted by the youngsters around her poking and prodding at her. It didn't much bother her though, she thought their curiosity was amusing. So the fact that there were three or four hiding in the bushes staring at her didn't anger her. In fact...
Must you? It was so peaceful here, Lyssand said with a sigh, stopping his grazing to look at her with reproachful brown eyes. His velvety muzzle skimmed the ground as he drifted closer to her, so as not to spook her quarry by lifting his head.
I must. Don't worry, they'll be back before long and your silence won't be disturbed for long, she said, a mischievous smile breaking out across her face. A bead of sweat rolled down her neck as she willed a giant globe of water into existence above the giggling shrub. She held it there for a moment, then released it in a rapid downpour. With shrieking laughter and startled cries, the children burst out from the bush and ran back inside the castle.
Darian laughed aloud with them, though her laugh turned to a slight cough at the end. Oh my, mustn't do that again, not unless I absolutely have to. The air here is not as bad as most of that we've passed through, but I still had an unusual amount of trouble controlling that water, she said to Lyssand after the cough subsided.

Re: Mountain City
Ka nodded to Jia, though he knew she couldn't see him, and sent her the image of them sun bathing together and a quiet contentment that would go with it. I ate quietly, a few maids and butlers coming in and out of the room greeting him with quiet but enthusiastic good afternoon sir's. It wasn't bad the first few times, but after a while it began getting repetitive. He greeted them back and ate quickly. Once he was done he teleported to where he had sensed Jia "Afternoon" He said with his voice and mind, grinning a bit at her. He walked over to her and placed a hand on her muzzle and scratched. "How has your day been so far? I would have joined you sooner, but I over slept."
"And then I stabbed it right in the face and killed it!" Osutin, on the other side of town, was telling about a time he killed a hollow with a stick, a rock, and some string to a bar full of drunk, but interested, listeners. Osu himself was rather drunk as well, slurring his words a bit. "It wash one of...of the harderest fightsh I've effer done in!" He proclaimed proudly, waving his drink through the air and nearly falling from the table he was standing on. He laughed loudly and took another drink, only to find it was empty. He looked in it just to make sure, then whirled around to face the bar tender. "Hey! Bar Keep! Gimi another!" He man behind the bar sighed and poured another drink and gave it to a waitress, who took it over to Osu. He hoped off the table to get it, and bowed to the lady once she delivered it. When she turned to leave, he gave her a playful smack on the rump. The bar went still for a moment, then, before he could blink, Osu was on his butt on the floor with a red and stinging hand print on his face, the waitress was stalking angrily to a break room behind the bar. "What'did I do?" He asked the snickering crowed of on lookers.

Re: Mountain City
Jia hummed and closed her eyes as he replied with an image of them together and the content they would feel. She sent back her delight for him to join her and waited patiently. She opened her eyes when she felt him teleport and join her. The prum that vibrated her chest traveled up his arm and into his body, and her eyes warmed with affection. That's alright, dear prince. It has been pleasant. The sun in your homeland is pleasurably hot, it is good to sun bathe in. she murmured. She nuzzled his hand and closed her eyes, more content now with him here. She shifted slightly onto her side, curling her tail around her body to her forepaws so Ka could lean on her chest between her forelegs. The movement pulled on the three fresh scars she had acquired on the trip here, delivered by a Malkori beast while she was in a twoleg form. She would never admit it to her Rider, but she knew she had been lucky. If the slashes had been just a little deeper, her spine would have been severed and she would have been paralyzed or dead. Even though that didn't happen, blood loss and infection and both been strong enemies to her for a while. If she hadn't had medical when she did, she might not have made it. Jia grunted softly and winced, shifting slightly again to alleviate the burn of skin being pulled.

Re: Mountain City
Naor drifted lazily for awhile, in no particular hurry to get anywhere. The sky blue dragoness was content to just be here in her normal form, floating through the skies with her Rider. She felt him shift on her back and a quickly suppressed feeling of discomfort radiated across their link. Nice try, but I was already beginning to suspect you were at your limit of tolerance for my scales, she said to him, becoming more alert as she turned to head back for the city walls. She could just make out Jia and her own Rider on the walls and bugled softly at them as Asa laughed at the keenness of her attention to his well-being.
Well I hated to interrupt this time of ours together for the simple fact that my skin and your scales don't get along as well as they should, he said silently, shifting freely now that the ruse was up. He sat up on her back and stretched his cramped muscles, waving at Jia and Ka as they approached. Let's not land beside them, they look like they're enjoying some quiet time of their own, he said to his partner.
I was just thinking the same, Naor said, banking to the left so that she would land in a courtyard separate from where their friends were resting. Just before her hindpaws touched the dirt path that led through the flower garden they were landing amongst, a breeze blew around them carrying the scent of horse. Darian is here, best not say anything about Lyssand, she snickered, thinking about the first time her Rider had encountered the golden-haired spy.
There was a faint gulping sound from her back, almost drowned out by the sound of her heavy body hitting the ground.
Darian's eyes narrowed and she lifted her arm to protect her face and eyes from the flying dirt as the light blue dragoness landed in the courtyard before her. Just before her hindpaws touched down, Darian saw her take notice of them. The corners of Naor's eyes crinkled like she was amused, and Darian couldn't help but feel that she was amused that she and her Rider had managed to run into the spy.
"Hello Naor, how are you today? Are you finding this place conducive to your rest?" she asked once the noise from the dragoness's landing had ceased. She bowed respectfully to the dragoness as her father had taught her, then walked forward and started scratching under the scales of her chest. There was a thud on Naor's far side that Darian assumed was her Rider Asa dismounting, but she ignored it. After their travels together she had come to like the bumbling buffoon, but she wasn't about to tell him that. It's not much of a like anyway, more of a tolerance. Like you would get after drinking foul-tasting water after awhile, she thought pensively, still scratching Naor's leathery skin.
Hello Asa, nice to see you as well, Lyssand said pointedly, his hooves making soft thuds on the dirt as he moved forward to inspect the enormous Rider's pockets, hunting for sugar cubes and celery stalks. You know, I've been thinking about locking the two of you in a room together. Just out of a morbid curiosity to see who kills who first, Lyssand said to Darian privately.

Re: Mountain City
OOC: Geezus...was it really December when I last replied to this thing?...I'm so very sorry...my muse (creativity) was not only killed, but drawn and quartered...then burned ._. so! I shall try to keep this thing rolling a bit quicker from now on. Also, Lord Juilten is free-play between us. Tall, broad build, white-blonde hair, light brown eyes, white fur lined cloak typically some kind of nice red or purple tunic underneath with loose grey, black, or brown trousers, and a silver straight katana. Capable of a 7 Ring (or Class) Seal.
Ka nestled down against Jia's chest in the warm sun, sharing her pleasure in it over their link, silently agreeing with her. When she shifted to accommodate him he felt her wince and a slight burn in his lower back at the exact spot where she was scared from the Malkori. He glanced up at her, not quite worried but close. "You know, the Healers here could take care of those scars for you." He said, twirling his fingers a bit in the air to form a small seal over her scars to sooth the pain a bit. Even though it was minor, he'd had enough of her feeling any amount of discomfort since their trip through the caves. He wanted her, as the rest of his friends, as comfortable as possible for as long as possible because once they set out for Castle Hinote, the next comforts they had would either be the royal suites or a casket and grave. He shook that foreboding thought from his mind and returned to enjoying the warm sunlight with his partner of heart and mind.
As much as he would have liked to relax like everyone else, he knew there was much planning to do if they were to be successful in even getting to the castle, much less getting in. His tour around the city had been a ruse to get him away from the Castle and speak with Lord Juilten privately. He wanted to discussed the cities logistics and manning without having to worry about the Lord's advisers getting in the way. True, he could have had the entire war room cleared out, but he did want to see the city a bit.
"So you say you have 50,000 foot soldiers, capable of a class 2 Seal at best, half that in archers and 30,000 spearmen and cavalry, with 10,000 class 4 Healers, yes?" They'd been over the numbers a dozen times and each time, no matter how they hashed it, they were still outnumbered 3:1 - assuming the Lord's spy's information could be trusted. It may very well have been more. "Yes. With 5,000 of my own Guard capable of a class 5 Seal and a few hundred experimental airships." Rathon nodded and tried to rethink how they could pull this off with as little losses as possible.
Their goal at the moment was for the Lord's army to provide a diversion while Rathon and company snuck into the castle. The problem with that was that it was almost for sure that their uncle knew they were here already, seeing as they'd been hunted as soon as they crossed the border, so he would know it was a diversion and kill without discrimination. They had thought about having them attack with the army and make themselves known to Gres, but then he would simply kill who he needed to take them alive. It was a bit of a puzzle, but one Rathon knew he could solve if he thought about it long enough.

OOC: lol Life can do that, love, especially life in the military. d:
IC: Jia snorted softly at her overworried companion. She hummed soothingly to him in her chest, the sound almost a purr now. She knew he only wished her to be comfortable though, without him even speaking to her of the matter. Still, she had to put in her piece. Smooth flesh, perfect flesh, speaks of a soft heart, one content to sit back and let others fight for what they believe, or hides like a coward. Flesh that bores the furrows of pain, scars, speaks of a heart that does not sit and wait but that pounces like a jungle cat, one that will fight themselves for what they believe and what is right. she rumbled to him softly. Scarless flesh is like that of wrinkles for humans; the more you have, the more you learn. she yawned and curled her neck around him protectively.
OOC: Short post is short...>.> I tried to have Zeke help Rathon but I wasn't sure how to make that happen. >.<

Re: Mountain City
Greetings Darian. I'm well, this place is much more restive than any of the other places we've had to stop these past few days. What about the two of you? I see your skin is still coated in that odd ice. Are you feeling any better? Naor replied, bumping her snout against the spy's chest. She hummed and closed her eyes when the blonde girl started to dutifully scratch her jaw.
"Hello Lyssand, Darian," Asa mumbled, awkwardly bobbing his head at them. He scuffed his boot against the ground, wincing as his scraped skin rubbed against the inside of his pants. He hid the wince by quickly looking up at the sky, his eyes narrowing agains the bright light of the sun.
"I'm fine, honestly. I really don't know why this ice refuses to leave my skin," Darian said with a smile. She lifted her arm and inspected it, scratching at it with her fingernail to see if she could scrape it away from her skin. She could almost feel it hardening everywhere her fingernail scratched. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Asa shift and then wince, quickly covering the involuntary sign of pain by looking up at the sky, as if the bright light around them was the cause of his discomfort. Darian rolled her eyes at his attempt to cover his pain. Why does he bother? WHat do I care if he's hurt? Darian asked Lyssand.
Why does he do anything? He probably didn't care if you saw and is simply waiting to go take care of it himself. Not everything is about you, Lyssand replied, rolling his eyes and snorting in exasperation.
We saw the others as we were flying. They looked well. I wonder if they've decided when to get moving again? I don't think it'll be much longer before we're all rested, Naor said pensively, drawing them all back into the conversation. She looked back over her shoulder in the direction she and her Rider had come from, as if she expected to see the Reaper brothers and their dragons to appear.
"Rest isn't the only thing we needed Naor. They'll most likely wait until they have a sound plan before making a move. At least that's what I hope they'll do. This doesn't seem like one of those times where going in blindly and chopping at things will work out so well," Asa said, resting his hand on her side.
"Maybe we should all go inside and get something to eat. It's nearly lunchtime, if they have anything new to tell us they can do it while we eat," Darian said, marking her place in her book and closing it. She walked off towards the largest entrance to the garden so that Naor could accompany them and headed for the dining hall. The heavy tread of Naor's scaly paws and Asa's surprisingly quiet footsteps accompanied her as she walked. Are you not coming with us? she asked Lyssand when she realized he wasn't following her.
No, I will stay here. You all can be served inside the castle, as for me, my preferred food source grows outside in the warm sunshine. You know where to find me if you need me, he snorted, trotting over to a particularly scrumptous-looking patch of grass.
Very well then, Darian replied, continuing on towards her own meal.
Before long she was seated in one of the smaller dining halls with her companions eating a hearty lunch of lamb and rice with yeast rolls and a tankard of water to wash it all down with. She nearly gagged when the first drop of foul-tasting water touched her tongue, but as Naor and Asa acted like it was perfectly alright she refrained from mentioning it and choked down a swallow.
