Covers?
So I was just thinking about this recently. I am not a huge fan of covers, I usually prefer the writer's intent of how the song should be performed. That of course is my opinion, so I was wondering what other folks think. Or post something that you feel has been improved by the artist covering. (And say why )
Here's one I like, maybe my favorite song...
The beauty of his voice, and the simplicity of the uke, the way it's performed, all elevate this past the other versions I've heard. I can't really explain it.
There's a lot of ones I dislike so I'll spare you, Faithful Reader. What do you think?

Re: Covers?
I think that good covers are rare, but they do exist. I think my favourite song that has been improved by somebody else covering it, is "Hurt" originally by Nine Inch Nails, later covered by Johnny Cash.
Original by Nine Inch Nails:
Cover by Johnny Cash:
Maybe it's just because, like I said in another topic, I prefer more mature voices, but the original vocals just can't compare to Johnny Cash's incredible voice, and the emotion he can really express, where Reznor seems more forced and fake, even though he wrote the song. Cash was much older (it was recorded just before he died) so it seems that he has more life experience, and isn't just whinging like Reznor- the line "Everyone I know goes away in the end" especially seems to mean more coming from Cash.
Worst cover I have ever heard in my entire life was Avril Lavigne trying to sing "Chop Suey" by System of a Down. Find it on youtube, and you'll see what I mean.
Firetongue: That Avril Lavigne cover was indeed horrible.
I suppose covers are okay. It's usually an honor to the original band/singer if someone decides to cover their song. Sometimes a song loses its intended sound in the cover process, but that's not always bad. As long as it doesn't totally butcher the original in a totally horrible, wannabe way, it's okay in my book.
A cover of Journey's Anyway You Want It by Rise Against. I actually like both versions, but I'd say I do prefer the Rise Against version a bit more. I like the raw sound of Tim McIlrath's voice, it adds a different kind of feel to the song [Especially when he says, "Oh baby hold tight"] but that's just me. Steve Perry is still a good singer, though. No one can match his voice, so I'm glad Rise Against kind of made the song their own instead of trying to imitate the original exactly. That's my opinion, but I might be a bit biased due to being in love with Rise Against and Tim McIlrath, but.... oh well.

Re: Covers?
What I really enjoy are metal covers of songs like "I Kissed A Girl" & "Just Dance" and then the Ska versions of songs like "Kiss Me"
Here are some covers that I really enjoy, some more than the original like All Time Low's "Umbrella"
Attack Attack cover of Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl"
PlayRadioPlay cover of The Killer's "Mr. Brightside"
All Time Low cover of Rihanna's "Umbrella"
New Found Glory cover of Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me"

There are a lot of good covers out there, professional and unprofessional. Another one I know is Ordinary World by RED, which was originally done by Duran Duran. RED's version is much more appealing to me, but that's probably because the style is more rock and they harmonized it, too. They also added more instruments to the background music, like violins.

Okay, I must admit that I have a hard time listening to covers most of the time. Usually I think they just sound really silly and quite annoying. But Framing Hanley's cover of Lollipop makes me happy.

Re: Covers?
@edesia: Agreed. Though it depends. I mean, they aren't always bad. Like Paramore covering Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody":
But other times, they just kill it. Listen to this. I thought it was kind of funny at first... Paramore's "That's What You Get" covered by A Plea for Purging
And then there's the mediocre covers that are somewhat decent, but are nowhere near the originals Paramore's "Misery Business" covered by Sea of Treachery
