Post Remaking Eragon the movie
So, there has been a lot of discussion over the years since Eragon came out, about wanting it remade. I would LOVE to see the movie done properly, following the book much more closely, and thereby making it possible for the other three books to be made into movies as well. How would I make this happen, you might ask? Here is my idea:

Using the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo, I would ask donors to give money towards the cost of purchasing the use of the film rights from 20th Century-Fox (this is the cheaper option, that will hopefully not cost millions of dollars for that part), then continue using said platform to raise money through (possibly) multiple campaigns in order to pay for pre-production/production/post-production costs. I know the original budget for Eragon was $100 million, so that is probably what I will be aiming for when it comes to production costs. I know that's a HUGE amount, and that this is a HUGE project to take on, but I really believe it's worth it.

What's in it for the donors, you ask? I've thought of a few "perks" as Indiegogo calls them, I just have to determine what amount of contribution goes with what perk. I am also open to suggestions from fans, of what kinds of things they would like as a reward for donating. I would also welcome suggestions as to the movie itself - actors/actresses you would like to reprise their roles, events that you think absolutely have to be in the movie and events that could be removed or done with some kind of montage, suggestions for directors, etc. You get the picture! I want as much input from fans, so that it ends up being something the fans can be proud of, not that piece of junk that is currently called the Eragon movie. Feel free to comment or message me! Once I decide how to go about the crowdfunding on Indiegogo, I will let you all know with a link to the campaign. Along those lines, what would you think of there being an account at one of the Nationwide (U.S.A.) banks, that you (the fans) could go into any branch and add money to the campaign that way?

TL;DR: Eragon Remake, using money from donors/fans. Yea or nay?

Well first off, this goal would be very hard to achieve. You don't only have to get the rights from Fox but you probably have to go through some things with CP as well. It is a good idea... in theory. But there are still a lot of complications. You have to find someone to produce you... (Do you plan on hiring a director? Or what role in this process do you plan to take?) And in the topic we were talking about who to play who they were all pretty famous people and you would have to find a really good director to get a really good cast. I think Joss Whedon would be phenomenal or Drew Goddard. You also have to find a new writer and yada yada yada. I would love to see it redone butt your expectations seem a little high. I don't mean to be rude or anything but it's a pretty long shot for someone unknown to come in and put on something this huge. All the best luck to you but this is a pretty big task, something that will take years upon years.

As for the donation thing, it is a good idea but you have to be careful on the "perks" aspect. I don't know what that means really but unless it's something good people might not want to donate... I dunno it depends on what it is really. What were your ideas?

I would not suggest letting people have access to a bank account whatsoever. They may be super secure and safe but there is always a risk that they could get in and take the money or something else.

You're not being rude, just realistic, which I completely welcome. (I'll let you know if I think you're being rude).

As for my role, the definition of producer that I have found would fit, because I would be the one raising the money, hiring the crew and director, etc. I do have to go through Fox, because CP sold them the rights, and they still own the rights. I would have to talk to him in some way if I wanted him to consult on the movies or something, which I would like to do, but I'm not holding my breath on that part. I first need to find a way to get Fox to reply to me. So far they've pretty much ignored me.

I've done A LOT of research into what goes into making a movie, and what each person's role is (crew-wise). I have a notebook I write everything down in, so I can keep track of the things I've researched and the ideas I come up with in regards to funding/casting/etc. I know it could take several years to even get the money and get the rights, not to mention filming. Did you know they only spent a month filming Eragon? Whereas the LOTR movies took a year or more each... I don't understand how they thought one month of filming was enough to do the story justice.

The bank account thing was a random idea, not a terribly serious one. As for perks, there are 2 that I've thought of so far. I know for the LOTR, people paid X amount of dollars to have their names included in the "Special Thanks To" section at the end of the credits. That would be one perk. Who wouldn't love seeing their name on the big screen? The second one is a little different. I don't know if you've seen the Cheep Cheep shirts? This is a link to the designer's online shop: http://julieann.spreadshirt.com/men-s-s ... /color/258. She is a friend of CP's, and he even has one of the shirts! I was thinking that a Cheep Cheep shirt could be another perk. I'm completely open to (reasonable) suggestions on perks.

Another thing that's necessary is finding a way to let all the fans know that there is someone who wants to remake the movie, because the more people that know about, the more potential donors there are, and the more support there may be for the project then. I know it could take several years just to get the money together and get Fox to let me use the rights...let alone, filming and everything else after that. It's a HUGE project to take on, but I think in the end it will be worth it, when all is said and done.

Post Re: Remaking Eragon the movie
Well before you start you really need to get absolutely everything in order. Even before you open the account for donations. If you don't then it will just take that much longer to put everything together and I don't know about other people but I wouldn't want to make a contribution if it wasn't going to used until years and years from now.

I was afraid you were going to say a big role like producer. I honestly think it would be better to find someone already out there in the field and doing it. I'm sure you have potential but it takes years of work to even begin to know all the ins and outs of working in the business and it would be a lot less likely for someone unknown to find actors and crew or even a director or someone to rewrite the script. If you were to get someone like Joss Whedon, he works with repeated people a lot as does Tim Burton and other people but they all have connections and what not. To really good actors and actresses.

I'm not sure how that t-shirt would fly over. I don't even know what a Cheep Cheep is and I wouldn't want to pay for one really. I've read the books and everything but I don't go read interviews so I don't know how relevant it is but it's not too relevant to the series. I would want something more Eragon related.

Have you even started to consider locations you would want to film? Or are you leaving that up to someone else?

One thing I would suggest is going to reddit. It's a website with a lot of info on it. There are Ask Me Anything topics where I know at least one (Director I think) person from Cabin in the Woods answers questions. It could be really helpful.

I plan to (hopefully) find an experienced producer to lead the project, so that I'm not trying to do it all on my own. I freely admit I have zero experience and would definitely prefer someone who has the experience to be in control of the majority of things! I haven't even remotely considered starting the fundraising things, or anything like, precisely because everything is NOT in order. I absolutely want to do this the right way, so nothing gets screwed up at ANY point in the process.

As for Cheep Cheep, it was part of the history between Angela and Grimrr Halfpaw. She says it to him when he first sees her (page 28) and then explains it to Eragon later on (pg 115).

I will check out Reddit then, and see if I can get some good answers about things! Thanks for that advice!

Post Re: Remaking Eragon the movie
I am going to write a screen play for all 4 books. Eragon will be a solo film while the remaining 3 will each be split into 2 movies. As an initial sketch movies will look like this.

1. Eragon, full film.
2. Eldest, Opens with Eragon looking at the battle field and then being called to await Ajihad's arrival, Closes with epic buildup music, bamn huge ass gold dragon glaedr lands on the cliff. close scene.
3. Eldest. Part 2, Opens with everyone standing together talking about how islanzadi wasnt doing her job stuff. Closes with Roran and Eragon talking about killing razac.
4.Brisingr, Part 1, Opens with the scouting mission on hellgrind, closes with some more epic buildup music where Saphira restores esidar mithrim.
5. Brisingr, Part 2, Opens with flight to Elves, Closes with The fight with Varuag and the small after math.
6. Inheritance, Part 1, Opens with the seige of Bellatona. Closes with all the armies staged before Urabean.
7. Inheritance, Part 2, this is where it gets tricking because film layouts dictate the climax be towards the end,but the book has a 300 page denoument. I want the fight and struggle with galbatorix be near the end. There is always the flash black option, Eragon lives the life afterwards and as hes sailing off he thinks back to the battle allowing us to show it then. Or the battle could still take place in order, with flashbacks detailing the whole series but focusing a more then allowed amount of time on the fight. Inheritance brought closure to the series as a whole, but since movies are usually more close ended than books, there has to be order.

The issue with the last film is that the book was a perfect end. But a film would have the same issues. The same thing occured with Lord of the Rings, the actual story ended with the first half of the third book but that stretch of time was only 15 minutes in the movie and excluded the entire plotline. The same thing can be done, but the only things to to be allowed in those 20 minutes would be Eragon heals sloans eye's, Saphira and Firnen meet, Eragon wroughts the changes to allow dwarves and urgals and eragon sales away.

Things I am not going to have in the first movie.. Urgals will looks as described. There will be no reason to cast Galbatorix cause he isnt even heard in the book, Durza will look actually scary and not like a b*tch, Urgals will look like urgals, Arya will look like an elf and will be unconsious when they rescue her, Saphira will be closer to as described in the book and will grow over time, not magicaly in the clous, i mean seriously wtf. Slaon will be more of an asshole, he was too kind. Also katarina will be there, like wtf dese noobs. Most of the other things will be different and will more closesly resemeble the book. One of the issues is that parts of the book are infact more suited to anime than film. As such those parts will have to be chaged.

Things the movie did ok that might be kept, Appearance of Zarroc, Broms attitude, visual effects. thats pretty much it.

Post Re: Remaking Eragon the movie
Well... I honestly think a thing as big as writing a screenplay should be left to the professionals. At least, if you actually do this, have someone who has done it before come in and make all final changes because they are much more experienced in this than you are.

I also think it is a little ridiculous to have 7 movies for a 3 book series and I'm sure a lot of people will agree with me on that. There's a lot of things that don't need to be put into a movie that was in the book.
Ex. In Hunger Games there were several parts where things had to be explained or described that was in the book.
That shouldn't be done. If they want to know more in depth details they should read the book and not take away from the movie like that.

Saphira and all the other dragons should look exactly as described in the books, not closer but still have some elements from the movie, only if that certain description was right. I'm sure also many other people would agree, If you keep the appearance of Zar'roc you will mess up every other Dragon Rider's sword in the series. It might look nice but it is not how Zar'roc should look. The visual effects were alright for the time the movie was done but they shouldn't be the same now since even in these short 6 years, vfx have gotten so much better.

Its a four book series...

Should have left the writing of these books to a professional as well... oh wait, the author was 15 when he started.

...Hobbit is being made into three movies.

Christopher Paolini also had a publisher. Someone who has been in the business before who looked over and checked his book before he put it into circulation. Just as I said you should do. And I said that's what I thought. It doesn't mean it's right. It is an opinion for a reason.

I meant three of the books would be made into 2 different movies each. The second book doesn't have enough action to put into two different movies. There's a lot of stuff that is just about his training and honestly it's just following the trend of Twilight and Hunger Games who are just following the trend of making more than one movie to make more money.

The Hobbit is also following three other movies that were extremely successful where Eragon would be a remake of a terrible movie.

If you didn't want harsh feedback you shouldn't have posted.

Easy now guys, no need to get heated.

It'd be cool to have everything from the books in future movies, but they're a little too long to have every single scene. Some things would end up having to be cut in the end. If you think you have what it takes to write a script though, you could give it a shot. gome has a point though, it wouldn't hurt to have someone look it over after you write it to make sure everything makes sense and that all of the important parts are in place. Editing and revision are parts of all writing processes after all. (CP had his family to help him with this on the first book, and then his publisher for the next three books.)
