It remained to be seen if Night Demon was, however. Yes, you may go. I have learned all I need to condemn that excuse of a dragon. If you wish a patrol of dragons to accompany you, please return and speak to Dark Talon here when you have recovered, he spoke. Apparently he was satisfied. Night Demon dismissed them with a flick of his left wing, and Dark Talon gave a deep bow of his neck and lowered his forelimbs. Kail bowed to the King and backed out of the room before she turned completely around. Once again she was in halls, being escorted, but this time out of the mountain. What would she do? Would she truly try to find Faefnir and get her revenge? What was the dragon guarding? Dark Talon shook his head in confusion. He felt a very strong urge to follow her and find out, but a Captain shirking duty was out of the question. He still couldn't get the thought of what would happen out of his mind, though. Rigel felt Kaileena's presence in his mind a moment before she spoke, and gave a small, satisfied smile when she spoke. Apparently all had gone as planned. No. None of these dragons would remember me, for I have not met any of them personally. I will pretend to be of your family, he replied. His sharp yellow gaze fixed onto the opening that Kaileena had gone into, and he waited for her to emerge. No dragons had spotted him yet. I don't know much about him. He was last here thousands of years ago, and some say he claimed to be son of the Great Dragon and rightful king of the Mountain. But the King's father took power, and all know of the enmity between them. Our King harbors mistrust and hatred for him because of this, I think. I don't know what he's really like, he answered truthfully. He saw nothing threatening about answering the phoenix's questions; it didn't hurt the Mountain at least. He wasn't sure what she'd use it for, though. It was obvious the King didn't like Faefnir. I am curious and suspicious of him, because there might be a reason the King hates him so much. And I want to find out what he's guarding, because that could answer my suspicions. I don't like that he would attack you, so that also makes me suspicious. More than that I cannot decide, other than I would be wary around him, he replied, deciding to be honest. He wasn't sure how much his answer could help the phoenix, but he didn't mind telling her. Up ahead, he could see the exit. Well, I think our conversation must come to an end, he announced, leading the way out of the darkness. The daylight outside was fading. Dark Talon looked at the phoenix, waiting to see what she would do. A sudden flash of movement caught his eye, and he blinked in surprise as another phoenix came into view. Rigel flapped into the air and began to soar higher, drawing gradually closer to the Mountain to make it look as if he was searching for something. Or someone, in this case. He watched out of the corner of his eye as the iron gray dragon and Kaileena emerged from the side of the rocky slope. Aneeliak! There you are! I've been looking for you, what happened?! Why are you at the dragons' mountain? he cried, his voice effectively sounding like a flustered, worried relative. Lying was one of his strong points, as was acting to build up a lie. OOC: I'll assume he knows her pretend name. I'm still debating on whether Dark Talon should follow them... I'm not sure if I want him interfering or not yet, since I'm not quite sure what the end's gonna be like yet. As they stepped into the light Kail suddenly remembered, Rigel, my name is Aneeliak! I know flipping my name around backward is kinda stupid, but who cares? Kail tried to act surprised, she didn't think she was very good. Legir, she cried, I so glad to see you. I hope Mom is okay, she must've been worried sick. I was attacked and sort of crashed here. They offered me refuge for few, but now your here and I can just come home. Kail turned to Dark Talon, He's my cousin, he's been staying with us. I would like to thank you for your help. I am glad Aneeliak has somewhere to go after what she has been through, Legir. I hope you return swiftly home, and without incident, he said, watching the newcomer. His feathers were very dark; scarlet, black, purple, and deep blue. His eyes were cold yellow. Dark Talon didn't think the pair looked related, but who was he to judge the closeness of phoenix relations? He inclined his head again and turned as if to go back down the tunnel. When he stepped inside, though, he paused and waited, listening. Something still didn't seem right about the new phoenix. It almost seemed as if he had been waiting for Aneeliak. Rigel glanced at the young dragon, who seemed a little suspicious. Hmph. Silly door guard. I'll be glad to be rid of him, he thought, turning back to his "cousin." You were attacked?! Well, you must come home immediately and tell us what happened! Thank you for keeping her safe, now let us be off, he exclaimed, letting his feathers ruffle in mock-worry. The iron-gray dragon disappeared into the mountain, and Rigel beckoned to Kaileena. I hope you got some useful information? Soon they were in a darker, more thickly forested part of the Beors. Below them was a cliff next to a stand of gigantic trees. A shallow cave was in the cliffside, a good place to remain undisturbed. The phoenix listened carefully as Kaileena described what she had learned, his full attention absorbed on her words. His feathers ruffled in glee as she spoke of the rumors that Faefnir was guarding something. Perfect. Everything is falling perfectly into place! he thought, already planning how best to travel unnoticed to the desert and search out whatever was being guarded by the golden dragon. Dark Talon kept a huge distance between himself and the two phoenixes, using his skill of tracking in the Beors and his mind to trail them. He could only just barely sense the phoenixes, but that was all he needed. If he got any closer, they might sense him too. He finally sensed them stop, and slowly parachuted gently down to land on an outcropping of rocks beneath a stand of pines. We shall see if you are really visiting family, he thought. If the phoenixes started moving again, he would know if they were lying. Kail felt uncomfortable, as if something was watching her, but she knew it had to Rigel though. This is just the kind of information I was hoping for. You probably already know that I plan on traveling to the Hadarac and seeking out this object. But first I will rest for a while. Do you still plan on accompanying me? he spoke, finishing with a question. It mattered little to him if she came along or not, since he didn't need her for anything else. However, she would be useful. Perhaps she would even be an ally, one day. Rigel still didn't really trust her at this point, but he had decided to trust her words. Dark Talon crouched in his little perch, waiting patiently. He was trained for situations like this. Waiting out an enemy could be an important thing to do in battle, or in a spying mission such as this. He could only just sense the phoenixes with his mind, but that was enough. If they started moving north, he would know why, and where, and wouldn't need to follow them to closely. I'm going to go hunting for a while, alone if I may. Kaileena couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong so she decided time away from Rigel would be best for her. She spread her golden wings and flexed them before lifting off. Could it really be that simple? Could the thing being guarded by Faefnir really be the silver egg? Rigel was desperately hoping it was, for an egg would be much easier to destroy than a dragon. It was a slim chance, though; it didn't seem likely that the silver hadn't hatched yet. After all, it had been over forty-thousand years since the power transferral cerimony. Could it really still be an egg? Rigel's thoughts quickly turned to plotting as soon as Kaileena left, for he wanted to make sure to do this right. He wanted to destroy the egg on his first try. He could almost taste his triumph; it was so close now, so close! Dark Talon crouched uneasily when he felt one of the phoenixes start to move leisurely north. It was the female, Aneeliak. The male was staying still. Am I discovered? he wondered. He huddled close to the ground, shrinking back into the shadows and blending physically perfectly into the dark crevice in the gray rocks. However, if the phoenix was searching with her mind, she would eventually be able to find him even if he disguised his mind. She wondered if the egg could still really be an egg, or even alive. It has to be, something as powerful and connected to Phoenixes as that egg would definitely alert all alive Phoenixes to its destruction, or hatching. She saw an mountain goat and swooped down for it. He shook his head angrily and ruffled his feathers, annoyed that he was about to lose patience yet again. That was his only flaw: that he always became impatient at the very end of each plan or venture, and ruined it all! He would not let it happen to him again! This was his ultimate goal: to destroy the silver dragon. It had not hatched yet, which made his work extremely easy. He only had to find the egg and avoid Faefnir, and victory would be his. He would not let impatience foil his plans this time. Dark Talon peeked out from under his ledge, peering between the curling pine branches at the sky beyond. He could sense the female phoenix getting closer. He searched the horizon for her, and finally saw her as she plummeted toward a mountain goat. He hoped she would carry it back to where she had been, but instead she stayed. Dark Talon drew up all his mental camouflage, knowing that this would only give her more time to find him. After she finished she was too strained still to return to Rigel, so she found a large tree nearby and perched, determining that she'd return to Rigel at dawn, no matter what she felt. She created a heat barrier around her because night was coming on as the mountain air was chilly. He relaxed his muscles and sank back into the shelter of the cliff-side crevice, relieved to remain undiscovered, at least for now. Hopefully he would remain safe until morning, and then he would see if these phoenixes could really be trusted. It was odd that Aneeliak was sleeping out here, away from the male who was supposed to be family to her. And it bolstered Dark Talon's assumption that there was something suspicious about these two. I'll find out for sure, soon enough, he thought. Rigel's thoughts were finally starting to slow down from their whir of planning. He realized he could really do no more plotting than he already had. Kaileena had still not returned, but it didn't truly matter to him. He had the information he needed, and he would set out in the morning to put it to use if she was with him or not. He was close to fulfilling his dream of tens of thousands of years: eliminating the silver egg, the usurper of the phoenixes' power! He jerked his head up, his yellow eyes gleaming eagerly. Yes, let us be off. If my suspicions are correct, my long years of preparation may finally pay off, he replied, ruffling his feathers and stepping away from the cliff. In a few moments, his wings were spread and he was launching himself away from the mountainside. After a bit of circling to gain altitude, he angled his body to the north. Beyond the mountains, the Hadarac Desert awaited. Dark Talon had an uneasy night. His dreams were filled with strange, evil birds attacking from the sky. When he awoke, he found that the female phoenix had left, and was now joining the male. The iron-gray shook himself awake with a yawn and peered out into the narrow valley below. He quickly plunged off the cliff and pounced on an unwitting deer that had been part of a group getting a drink from the stream below. He ate quickly, still focusing on the two phoenixes at the edge of his mental senses. They began to move, and Dark Talon swiftly took a large drink from the stream before picking up his deer and following at a stealthy pace. Somewhere in the heart of the desert lay the thing the phoenix had been searching for, for over forty-thousand years. He was sure of it; it couldn't be anything else! It had to be the silver egg! Finally, after hours of flying, the two phoenixes were in the desert itself, and quickly approaching its center. It is somewhere within the desert's heart, Kaileena. The only remaining task for us is to find out where, he spoke quietly. He began to cast out his mind, knowing that eventually he would detect the egg. It's presence would be very, very familiar to his mind, and perhaps to Kaileena's as well if she had been there on the night of the bestowing. Dark Talon followed at a distance, but soon grew bold enough to follow within sight of the phoenixes. They weren't looking for him; they were looking for whatever it was Faefnir was guarding. The golden dragon had a reason for guarding whatever this was, but Dark Talon still didn't know why the phoenixes wanted it. His mind had begun to pick up traces, bare hints of familiarity. It's the egg... I knew it would be. It's close, very close, he said, his voice almost a whisper, and a little crazed, at that. He followed the traces, his wings working rapidly, now. His obsession was apparent; he had no thought for anything but his goal. It was getting so close, so close! The phoenix was moving faster and faster without even realizing it. In the distance, the horizon was higher where a set of low mountains and rocky pillars stood up out of the sand. The feeling was coming from near there. Dark Talon was forced to fly faster in order to keep up. He didn't like how this phoenix was moving. The dark one, the male, was speeding up, his wings beating almost crazily. The iron-gray was alarmed, and something was really making him worry. Something was telling him that he needed to stop the dark-colored phoenix. He worked his wings, and began catching up with the pair despite the warning in his mind. She watched Rigel searching for the egg with his mind, so she thought she'd give it a try. She had never really done it before, mostly hunting with her senses. She forced her mind apart and a huge wave exploded from it, much bigger than she thought possible. She sensed the egg, literally touched it with her mind. It was farther out than she could feel Rigel's mind go, though wisps of his mind seemed to get really close to it here and there and he searched. She gasped though as she retracted her mind. Dark Talon, I don't know why your here, but if you want to stop us than help me. My name is Kaileena, and she left it at that. She used some of her energy replacing it as fast as she could. She made a decision and called forth with her mind, a hidden past now fully revealing itself at this single point. Faefnir! If either of you are in your fortress listen. When the Phoenix power was transferred to that egg a Phoenix named Rigel tried to stop it. He has returned and is closing in. I am Kaileena, last known member of the Phoenix Council. Kail drained a good portion of her energy to put a massive wall solidified fire in front of Rigel. It was a few miles wide and high. He screeched in anger as the wall of fire rose before him, and quickly surrounded his body in cold blue flames as he burst through. The power of the fire still weakened him, though. He stopped when he came through the other side, and turned around, gaze cold and deadly. You wish to stop me? Then I will kill you too! One more of the Council shouldn't be hard to deal with! You'll be as easy as the others, and then I will have victory! he screamed angrily, the cold fire pulsing from his feathers. Dark Talon flew as fast as he could, realizing that he was right about something of great importance happening. A giant wall of flames grew up before the dark phoenix, but his body was coated in blue fire and he shot through. Kail ended the fire wall, Rigel's corrupted powers and impulsive mind were proving more problem some that she had first thought. This world is to corrupt, this dragon will help when she hatches. I should have known. You're just like them; shortsighted and unable to see the truth. When I destroy this dragon, I will be eliminating the most corrupt creation to ever exist. You were one of those who helped to create it; I should have known you'd be just as tainted, he snapped angrily. He noticed movement out of the corner of his eye; a dark gray speck growing larger on the horizon. He began a low chant under his breath, his words obscured and indecipherable. A sudden wind blew out of the east, and clouds began to build on the eastern horizon. If it was a fight she wanted, Rigel would not disappoint her. Dark Talon surged closer. He could see both phoenixes clearly now with his sharp draconic eyes. The dark one had lowered his head, and when he raised it, a sudden wind blew the dragon a short distance. He quickly righted his flight path and glanced quickly to the east. Large, dark clouds were building, surely some magical work of the evil phoenix. She righted herself and stared right into Rigel's eyes as the skies changed overhead. She checked back on Dark Talon, he was getting close enough to help. Someone is going to die today, but I promise you this Rigel. It will not be Faefnir or the hatchling! She glanced back at Dark Talon then at the storm; it was getting really dark. Even if I die today, I will find the egg tomorrow. Nothing you do can stop me, he hissed. Rigel was glad that he had made Kaileena yell; he liked it when others lost control over their emotions, it gave him the advantage. This phoenix was only agreeing to fight in the dark because she knew she was too weak to stop his clouds. Rigel laughed again as the stormclouds rolled in unnaturally fast, already covering half the sky in darkness. Without warning, the dark phoenix flew up, sharp crystals of ice falling from his feathers and swirling toward Kaileena in spiral patterns. Cold blue fire laced up the phoenixes' wings and glowed as he turned it into a weapon, meant to add a sharp edge to his wings. The sky was being cloaked in darkness, and the wind was picking up speed. Dark Talon had to fight to stay on his swift flight path. The phoenixes were only just ahead. He brought up shields of blue flame to break through some of her fire, and suddenly dove. Though he was a little scorched by going through her flames, he ignored the feeling, too caught up in his own crazed thoughts to care. His talons and the leading edge of each wing were glowing with magic blue fire, adding to their strength. He lashed out at the female phoenix with his claws and then swooped up again, turning himself around to face her. As he did so, he noticed the dark gray dragon heading for them, and screeched in anger. It was the same dragon who had escorted Kaileena out of the mountain. The dragon dove for him, but Rigel was ready, having seen him coming before he intended the phoenix to. A wall of blue fire rose up and was sent towards the new enemy, before more of Kaileena's fire surrounded him again. Dark Talon dove at the dark phoenix, but was spotted before he could attack. While he was still in his dive, a wall of blue fire exploded towards him. The iron gray twisted his wings to get to the side, but was still forced to brush through some of the fire. As he did, the muscles on his left side spasmed in a sudden jolt of icy pain. The sensation was like burning and freezing all at once, and Dark Talon roared in surprise as he turned away. He twisted his head back, and was relieved to see no physical damage. The fire was not real fire, but it still hurt. Two pierced her side, but her body heat melted it quickly so it didn't leave as large a wound as it could've been. She was momentarily defenseless from the pain. Rigel attacked in this opening and left several gashes across her back. She rolled back, and blasted the area with flames to seal the wounds. Rigel was focused on Dark Talon, so Kail used the same tactic as him. She used magic to put fire right in front of his eyes and momentarily blind him then she closed the gap. They didn't hurt him, but he couldn't see through fire. Another column of fire, this one from the dragon, blasted into his back and sent him tumbling a short distance through the air. He managed to twist his body around to meet the oncoming Kaileena, his own beak and talons laced with cold fire, and the leading edges of his wings glowing with a metallic, silvery-white light. He had cast a spell to make them razor sharp, like extra talons, in case he needed to defend against an enemy. Just before Kaileena hit, Rigel strengthened the wind and sent it toward the gray dragon to buy some more time. Dark Talon was flying to attack the dark phoenix, intent on helping Kaileena, when a powerful gust of wind nearly ripped him entirely from the sky. He managed to flare his wings rapidly and half-crash, half-land on the sandy ground, losing his balance and toppling over down the low dune. She cursed he was perfectly equipped to block her every attack, she needed to think outside of the box. She backed off and breathed deeply to try and clear her mind of the pain from his fire. Suddenly and idea struck her; Rigel wasn't he only one with a devious mind. Kail dropped down to just above ground level and flew into a bowl of sand and halted. She called on her magic and cleared a hole in the clouds and stayed put to shine down on her. Come join me Rigel! She opened a hole in the clouds and entered the small area of sun. Rigel snorted scoffingly at her; though he preferred darkness, sunlight wouldn't hurt him! It might be a strength to Kaileena, but he was a phoenix to, and could still get energy from brighter light even if it wasn't as efficient for him. She would regret ever double-crossing him. In fact, she would regret ever meeting him! The dark phoenix dove towards her angrily. Dark Talon rose from his "landing" spot and headed straight at the dark phoenix, who was headed for Kaileena. The iron gray dragon rose behind his opponent and slashed his talons down his back, wincing as the cold flames lanced pain into his limbs. He continued his flight upwards and twisted his body around to send a column of fire at the bird. Rigel shrieked as dragon talons tore through some of his feathers and a little skin, and blocked the column of fire, his attention mostly directed to the dragon now. As soon as Rigel was inside the edge of bowl, Kail put her plan into effect. She erupted in a massive ball fire, melting the sand into a bowl shaped piece of glass. She used magic to make the backside reflective. She moved over into the beam of magnified sunlight. Energy coursed through till she about exploded. She laced all the light with a pure white fire, the same that the egg should have once she hatches. Your tricks cannot save you! Your power is not great enough to stop me! he cried, blue flames rippling off him. He had to try very hard to keep himself from entering his fire-form. He didn't want to use that energy until the very end, for if he used it sooner he wouldn't have enough strength left to deal properly with the egg. He spoke another spell under his breath. This one took a lot more energy than his previous spells, but it had great effect: the glass in the desert shattered and exploded upwards with powerful force. Dust around the rim swirled around, and sand swept in on the flames. Dark Talon burned away most of the ice shards, but winced as some struck him along his tail and the tips of his wings. He dove after Rigel, keeping his eyes averted from the blinding light around Kaileena. He dove straight at the phoenix, hitting him just after his spell erupted. Dark Talon drove his enemy into the roiling sandstorm, but was suddenly blasted backwards in a pulse of cold fire. The dragon roared in pain at the flames; they caused no outward damage, but they were extremely painful to touch. The evil phoenix rose out of the blowing sand and lashed out with his talons, catching the dark gray dragon across his face and neck. He growled and sent some of his own fire at his opponent. As he did, he growled again. This phoenix had too many magical abilities for him; there had to be a way to finish this quickly. A sudden thought lit in Dark Talon's mind; Faefnir was said to have great powers, was he not? Surely he was already on the way to defend his home, but perhaps he didn't know exactly what was here? Dark Talon decided to get Faefnir, and tell him exactly what was happening. Without a word, he sped off, calling back to Kaileena, I'll get help. The winds blew the sands into Kail's eyes and she used fire to burn it out. Kail was glad that she had only used her fire form for a few seconds to start the fireball, but she'd still have to wait a few minutes before she could use it again, at least she got back all her energy before Rigel put an end to it. Hurry, I'll hold him off as long as I can!! She needed something new, there must be something that Rigel can't counter, anything. She stayed out of reach and watched Rigel, he was getting mad, just like her. I have to stay calm; stay calm. Rigel you no good excuse for a tweedy bird. Why haven't you killed me yet? I'm excited to be on the brink of finishing another rp, though. IC: Rigel was getting close to losing his temper, especially at the taunts of Kaileena. He had to expend a substantial effort to keep from loosing his fire form. He remembered all the times his impatience had been his downfall; so many times he had been astoundingly patient for sometimes hundreds of years, and then, just when he was about to succeed, his impatience had ruined everything. He could not let that happen now, not when he was so close to his goal of nearly forty-five thousand years. Kaileena was surprisingly strong and resilient, moreso than probably any other phoenix he had killed, but she did not have his experience in fighting a member of her own kind. He knew how to counter her attacks; he just had to keep himself from losing his control. That was becoming increasingly hard, however. Rigel strengthened the magic around his claws, beak, and wing-edges to sharpen them, and dove at Kaileena. You think your taunts mean anything?! Strong you may be, but not strong enough to stand against me! The only reason you are not dead yet is because I do not want to waste energy that I must use to destroy the egg! he screeched back. This was partially the truth; he would fare better in his fire form, but he didn't know how much strength he would need to destroy the silver egg. Rigel's dive ended, and he met Kaileena with talons extended and beak ready to stab. Dark Talon flew desperately to the north, towards the red rock spires and the set of three mountains that marked Faefnir's home. Maybe Kaileena's cry had not been strong enough, or maybe the evil phoenix had even blocked it somehow; in either case, Dark Talon wanted to find the golden dragon and alert him to what was ocurring. As long as she kept pushing him, she hoped to control herself at least. She watched Rigel dive for her, but she held her "ground." Kaileena extended her talons forward and locked them in with Rigel's to hold them in place. She used her wings to buffer his beak attacks. You know Rigel, I'm not sure you can destroy the egg. I seem to recall something special that my family gave the egg, it was kinda like a shield to prevent any damage what so ever until the dragoness chooses to hatch from it. Yes, she tried an attack of her own, We did, it was special and secret, only Faefnir knew about it. I guess that means you're going to die for no reason today. Rigel realized that he had come near to making a mistake in not killing this phoenix immediately, as soon as his memories returned to him. Since she had enabled him to find the silver egg, though, he supposed that this was necessary. Rigel emerged from the clouds and faced his enemy, yellow eyes gleaming in the bright light and cold fire rippling from his talons, beak, and wings. He itched to take his fire form and destroy her right then and there, for he knew his magical powers were unstopable in that form. When Rigel was close enough that he couldn't stop, Kaileena changed. She burst forth with flames half as hot as the sun, but light as equally bright. Fire rolled off her hooked talons and beak. Every part of her burned and heart relocated to a safe spot behind the beak. Are you ready to fight Rigel? He still recieved a few gashes on his back, but they weren't extremely deep. And they would be irrelevant now. Kaileena had made the first move, and now it was his turn. The dark phoenix continued his dive until he reached the tops of the dark clouds as they flickered with lightning. His fire form had been ready to emerge for a while, and when he finally released it, a pulse of cold fire and ice magic rippled outwards from him. His body erupted into blue and white fire, and grew dramatically in size. Rigel reveled in his new power, feeling the magic course through him. He finally rose out of the clouds, chanting as he did. Dark swirls of the thunderheads twisted up with him until they were spiraling around him and Kaileena, almost like the inside of a tornado but much wider. The sun still shone in through the tops of the swirling vortex of clouds, and lightning danced across their surface. Though darkness was his ally, he was not of it, and light was not his enemy. He associated himself with no one and nothing. This phoenix would pay for the mistake of betraying him. Make no mistake, Kaileena. You will die today. Though, since you helped me find the egg, it will be a quick death, he said with a cold laugh. Without warning, he flew at his opponent, cold flames rippling off him in deadly waves. His fire was unique among phoenixes; though it caused no physical damage, it could harm the very mind and soul, and cause intense pain. Kaileena's fire form would be mostly immune to his fire, though, which was a disappointment. The intense pain inflicted on others by his fire gave Rigel great amusement. The dark phoenix charged at Kaileena, talons ready to rise to the fight. OOC: Heheh. He managed to avoid those directed at his limbs, but with his beak temporarily shut, he could not attack effectively. He flew towards his enemy, enraged, and blasted a wall of his blue fire at her as he drew even with her in the air. He didn't attack her directly, for he needed to gather strength from the light to use a spell to erase the fiery ropes. The pain wasn't outright but it was there and took its toll. She felt slightly weaker, but at least it didn't have its full effect. Kail flew another twenty feet so she again had a slight height advantage. Her wings felt strained and the rays of sunlight had been temporarily blocked by the ever changing sky. But perhaps... However, his opponent sent a mixture of lightning and her fire at him. The dark phoenix used some of the energy he had gathered to counter the attack. He pulled some of the lightning from the other side of the clouds and had it meet Kaileena's bolt before it could hit him. The storm was conjured by him, so he had more control over it. Because he had used some of his energy though, it would take longer to remove the fiery ropes. Rigel backwinged away from the other phoenix to buy some more time, sending out a pulse of cold fire (not a very strong one). At last, he had gathered the needed energy, and quickly sang out the words mentally. His rage was directed only on her now; the fight had consumed all traces of his wrath towards the egg. She was his prey now; she would die! The phoenix flew faster so he would meet her in the air, claws and beak extended. He began to work on another spell to summon more lightning, for the spell that had removed the fiery ropes had consumed some of his strength and he did not want to fight head-on for longer than he needed to. Since she was in her fire form, Rigel's attacks did not draw blood, but they hurt all the same. The lightning was picking up and clouds swirled around. Kail had enough control now to angle falling into a stray ray of sunlight. She pulled all she could from it, enough for one last burst of energy. It's now or never. Rigel was in a fury, and she wondered if he even remembered the egg, but that didn't matter; all that did was that he was completely focused on her which was good. Kaileena rocketed upward, leaving a trail of flames behind her. She burst through the storm top, without checking to see if Rigel had followed. He could feel the energy of the lightning crackling through his feathers; soon it would be ready to explode from the storm. His opponent suddenly turned and shot upwards, towards the edge of the clouds. Rigel hissed and continued his chase. He would have to be near enough to her when he cast his spell so that he could aim it accurately. It was obvious she was planning another large attack; he had to unleash the pent-up electricity of the storm before that happened. It would probably severely weaken her. He couldn't give her the opportunity to attack first. Rigel broke through the clouds, small bolts of electricity arcing randomly to his wingtips from the storm beneath him. Finally she got to the point where her fire had trouble sustaining itself with the oxygen and pain ripped through her as patches flickered between flame and nothingness. She cut flame body and returned to her fireless form, but kept moving farther still. If Rigel comes out here in his flame form he'll should die. She reached a point that was far enough out that it was past the point where flame could exist unaided. The gravity of the earth was very minute so Kail had make slow controlled movements. His own flame was weakening; he wasn't too blinded by rage to see that. But his anger increased. Think I need air to fuel me?! I'll use magic! he thought, though he didn't speak aloud. He pulled in magic to feed him oxygen from the atmosphere and continued on his way until he was just below his enemy. The spell was extremely draining, but it would be worth it if he could kill her now. He knew he didn't have much time, though. He had to kill her as soon as he could or he would weaken too much to hold his spell, and could possibly be too weak to revert out of his fire form. It was now or never. Can't go back now, but at least I can use magic! Kail needed something fast to block Rigel's attack. She spoke the words quickly and shield of fire arose between herself and him, but not quite soon enough. Rigel had left a wide gash across Kail's chest. Her ribs kept it from getting to deep, but the fire made the pain so much more intense. Kail's mind was suddenly filled with pain signals to where she could not think because of the pain. She wanted to stop it, to use magic to heal it, but she couldn't find the words. The blood flying exhilirated him, and almost numbed him completely. He was so close to triumph; he could almost see her heart in his talons. The phoenix dove again and attacked Kaileena once more, trying to rake his claws down her back. After this attack, though, the spell became too much. Rigel was forced to relinquish the air spell, and he was reverted back to phoenix form. The spell left him severely weakened, but the adrenaline of battle was still pumping through him. He had to finish this! Suddenly, the other phoenix seemed to burst to life. Rigel started pulling away, but recieved a powerful kick to the gut as well as several large gashes and was flung away from Kaileena. He screeched angrily and with a little pain, and sent a wave of cold fire hurtling at her. The flames still came with little energy use, but they were running out of time. The wind rushing past her was making it difficult to turn herself over. I suppose I can open my wings when I'm falling this way, at least alittle bit, then they won't be forced the opposite direction. She slowly opened her wings, but only a few feet from her body. She started slowing down for which she was thankful. As she slowed more, she opened her wings in ratio to it. She hit the storm and was swept aside into the cyclone that was forming. It wasn't to fast to manage, in fact it helped her right herself. She knew Rigel would be coming after her soon; she couldn't see him yet. She wasted no time. Rigel may have created the storm, but now it was her turn to use it. She was exposed to a more direct sunlight when they had broken the atmosphere, but Kail didn't realize it right away. She used all the power she dared, draining everything but what she needed to stay alive and gliding to the ground. The cyclone was coming into full power now and suddenly the wind was afire with Kaileena's light-fire; which she had set to target Rigel's particular kind of dark fire. She glided to the ground in the middle, completely worn out. The electricity was jumping to his feathers once again, and he realized his original spell to release it was still active. As he tried to right himself, he saw Kaileena's wave of fire heading straight for him. It was too powerful to avoid, but the dark phoenix didn't care. If he was about to die, he would take Kaileena with him! Just before the burst of phoenix fire hit him, Rigel released the full power of the pent-up lightning of the storm. An explosion of purple-blue-white electricity erupted and quickly locked onto its target. It crackled in deadly flashes of light across the ground, lighting up the desert for miles like a beacon. Rigel felt the phoenix fire hit him, and was only able to partially diminish its effects with his cold fire. His flames didn't protect him fully, though, and the effort cost him nearly what reserves of strength he had left. But the lightning still exploding across the ground in rippling arcs was worth it. As the dark phoenix was falling through a swirling torrent of bright phoenix fire, and an explosion of lightning ripped across the ground, Dark Talon arrived back on the scene. Just in front of him was a massive golden form, blue eyes livid with anger and scales glinting. The stormclouds were parting before him like waves of water, as his magic swept through the land before him. Dark Talon watched as Faefnir let out a massive roar that seemed to shake the very earth, and the lightning swept back up into the clouds and disappeared. The rest of the stormclouds were swept away by a powerful burst of heated wind, and sunlight bathed the desert once more as Faefnir descended on the battleground, Dark Talon following closely behind. Rigel cried out in horror as he came out the other side of the phoenix fire. He was greatly injured and severely weakened, but as soon as he saw the massive golden dragon bearing down on him, he knew he would not be able to escape. He quickly prepared the necessary enchantments and envokements to resurrect him after his imminent death, and cursed the situation. He had failed! Her entire body kept shaking when lightning suddenly stopped and it seemed to get lighter. Kaileena heard a massive roar and raised her eyelids enough to see Dark Talon behind a purely massive dragon who could only be Faefnir. The sun felt good, but Kail was too weak and tucked her head back into her wing. I just need to sleep awhile, she said in a whisper to Dark Talon. Watch over me...please. You were right to warn me about this phoenix. Faefnir told me about him; he's pure evil, the dragon spoke as he landed next to her. he lended her a fairly large portion of his energy, hoping she would recover from this fight. He had heard stories of how phoenixes could revive themselves after death, but didn't know if this were really true or if it would even work in this case if Kaileena died. He looked up from his position next to the fallen phoenix and watched events between Faefnir and Rigel unfold. Rigel was laying on the ground, his feathers blackened and smoking. he saw Faefnir approaching him, anger spread over his features like the sun now spread over the desert. The phoenix smiled grimly as the golden dragon landed next to him, obviously about to kill him. Hello, Faefnir. Nice to see you again. Too bad I couldn't kill you this time, like you deserve! he cried, and began laughing hysterically. A rumbling growl emanated from deep in the old dragon's chest, so loud it made Rigel's bones vibrate. This is the last time you threaten my half-sister, he hissed, huge ivory teeth bared in a snarl. Rigel only laughed harder and more maniacally. Oh you really think that, do you? We'll see! he cried as he continued laughing. He only glimpsed Faefnir's look of rage and disgust before the golden jaws were lunging towards him. All went dark. Dark Talon couldn't help but let out a low growl of his own as Rigel started laughing. He didn't know what was said, but he could see the craziness of the phoenix. Kaileena eventually awoke and spoke to Faefnir. The huge dragon smiled, his piercing blue eyes kind. I am pleased to finally meet you, Kaileena, and I am very grateful for your assistance in protecting the egg. Unfortunately, you are right about Rigel. He will one day pose a very great threat to my half-sister... and the world. But that will not be for a long time. Dark Talon? Will you move his body to the location I show you? I must transport the egg to a new location, he said warmly, turning to the deep gray dragon. Dark Talon's eyes widened as he was addressed directly by Faefnir. When he had first come upon the dragon, Faefnir had been on his way to this site, and had explained briefly to Dark Talon about the silver egg, Rigel, and Kaileena, but that was different than getting a direct request from the magnificent dragon. Faefnir was smiling once more at Kaileena. Certainly. You both may accompany me to the egg, and Dark Talon, you should probably leave after we reach it, to make good time. They eventually came upon a series of rocky hills and outcroppings, and Dark Talon made out a cave running into one of the hills. Faefnir landed next to it and reached carefully inside with one enormous claw. When he drew it out, he was holding tenderly to a small, shining object. He opened his claws and revealed a small, perfectly formed egg, which looked tiny as the huge golden dragon held it. Dark Talon peered forward, struck by the beauty of the glittering, silver surface that looked like fallen starlight. This was what they had fought so hard to protect; what Kaileena had risked her life for. One tiny egg, which had the power of the stars. It seemed slightly ridiculous, to think that so much power resided in so small a thing. He looked back up at Faefnir, who was watching the egg with eyes filled with love and protectiveness. After a few more moments, he gently closed his claws over the precious object and drew his forepaw to his chest. This is the egg of my half-sister, Phalynx. I know a better place to hide her, for it will not be too much longer until she hatches, he spoke with a smile. Dark Talon, would you like to stay with me at the Stronghold before you depart? the golden dragon asked. Dark Talon shook his head. No. The sooner I get Rigel away from here, the better, he replied. Faefnir nodded. Very well. Kaileena, will you take up the offer to join me for a while? he responded, turning to the phoenix. OOC: Yay almost done. Maybe only one more post each for us. She touched it with her wing before Faefnir covered it up in his claws. She will always be welcome in my home, and by any of family if I ever find them alive. You too. And may the wind be strong beneath your wings, Kaileena. I hope we can meet again, he replied respectfully. Dark Talon, I will show you the best location to dispose of Rigel's body. It is a dangerous place, but if you stay on its edges you will come away unscathed, Faefnir told the dark-colored dragon, and Dark Talon suddenly got an image within his mind, of a treacherous, burning place, and he also got its name: the Scorched Lands. He also got a sense of which direction he needed to fly in order to reach it. He bowed his head to Faefnir as well. Thank you. I will move quickly, and I hope I can meet you, and maybe your sister, again in the future, he responded with a smile. The huge golden dragon returned his smile. May the stars watch over you, Dark Talon. Safe journey, he soke in the Ancient Language, and beckoned Kaileena with a wing as he turned north. Dark Talon smiled and flew over to where Rigel's body rested. The phoenix's remains weren't too heavy, and Dark Talon picked the body up and began his flight without hindrance. He angled his wings to the east and slightly south, and began his mission. Once it was complete, he could return home and to his duties at the Dragon Mountain. Briefly, he turned his head back to watch Faefnir and Kaileena go. He truly hoped they would meet again, and that he would get to meet the dragon they had fought to protect that day. If Faefnir was anything to go by, Phalynx would be a worthy dragon as well; one who would be worth meeting. Dark Talon gave one last roar of farewell before he crested the next golden sand dune. about a month later, on the edge of the Scorched Lands...................... Rigel finally finished his climb to the top of the charred, blackened ridge, tiny shards of razor-sharp rocks clattering down as he loosened them with his talons. He had reawakened just recently, extremely weak and with barely a memory of what had happened. His memories were just starting to return, but not enough to form a clear picture of his life, yet. He remembered a phoenix he was fighting, and a huge golden dragon, and a younger dark gray one. But most of all, he remembered a silver dragon egg, sparkling like a star. He knew that he had to destroy it or the dragon that hatched from it, at all costs. When he was back to full strength again, she would die.
