Atalanta
Atalanta:
Age: Young Adult Gender: Female Race: Dragon Color: Bluish white Eyes: (right) Blue; (left) Amber Weapon: fangs, claws, tail, spikes and antlers/horns.
Appearance: She has quite an elegant figure, being slim for a dragon, and she’s not too muscular. As she is so light, she may be a faster flier than most of males (at least). Her wing membranes are almost transparent and very thin, making them similar to a cloak of water; still, they're resistant enough to the cutting air flowing while flying. Her smooth scales are always wet as they contain water molecules within their composition, creating a thin and almost invisible veil of water that protects her. In fact, you'll only notice it if you touch her, really. If it dries out, she may be in serious trouble; she’ll become weaker and the possibilities of contract all sorts of diseases increase dramatically.
Skills: as she discovered in the forest, she can make small streams flow from rocks, and knows how to form little whirlpools using water currents (these abilities will probably increase as she progresses in the story). Her fire (which she hasn’t mastered yet) will be of a translucent white with hints of clear blue in the middle of the flame. Healing. As the water on her body keeps her healthy, she can use one or two of her scales (over which she pronounces a simple spell) and apply them over someones wound. The thermal-like minerals in her scales' water can cure many different types of wounds such as lacerations and some weaker poison symptoms and even burns. To use its therapeutic properties in internal symptoms such as some types of fevers, one must boil one or two of the enchanted scales and drink the infusion. One of the exceptions she can't cure by herself are fractures.
Carrying/Wearing: a few leather attires and saddle. A shield with a tree and a dragon motif, a wooden spear and an elvish bow and arrows she had unwillingly stolen from Ainion (they were attached to the leather attires by the time she escaped).
Personality: most of the time, she just wants to be left alone, enjoying nature and its simple and pure beauties. Very observing, she’ll only interact with someone who at least seems nice to her. Loving and caring with nature and her possible friends when she gets to know them, she is not good at fighting and will definitely avoid it, preferring to work things out with dialog. A sour voice tone or arguing (even if it is not concerning to her) upsets her very much, making her feeling in obvious distress and physically tense. As you may guess, she is quite shy around males.
Likes: Water. (One of her favorite ways of relaxing is to take long baths. It restores her energies and she enjoys particularly those waterholes with waterfalls); The sun (despite being hot, it reminds her of her mother. She just has to watch out for her body to prevent it from drying); Strolling or flying with meditating purposes; To sing (especially at night, where no one can notice her) (she has a beautiful voice for a dragon, making it sound like a whale’s chant)
Dislikes: Hot places (she will absolutely refuse to enter a desert for example; and she usually gets grumpy if obliged to be in a hot place for too long (about... 5 minutes?), not to mention her water veil that affects her health); To be yelled at; To be constantly reminded of her lack of abilities (although she accepts mild criticizing)
History: Daughter of Phoebe (dam) and Ariston (sire), she lived her first years around her mother deep in Du Weldenvarden. Although her mother was a wild dragon, Ariston had an elf rider named Ainion, and one night, against Phoebe’s wishes, Ariston took Atalanta away to Ainion’s hometown, Sílthrim, so he could raise her alone as he pleased with no interference of his mate. Ariston knew Phoebe was afraid of humans and elves, and confident she would never approach their daughter again, he soon initiated a strict education involving warfare and fighting skills. Meanwhile, although Ainion didn’t approved it at first, he convinced himself Ariston’s daughter development was not exactly something of his concern but the dragon’s only. Atalanta, on the other hand, always had lack of physic strength and self confidence, a fact aggravated due to her father’s harsh critiques about her constant failures, which made the training even more painful for her. She was perfectly aware that defeating Galbatorix was the only thing Ariston cared about, not about her. And for someone with her personality, someone who needs to feel loved, that hurt the most. Despite her father’s attitude towards her, Ainion was surprisingly gentle to the dragonet, and thanks to him she could learn basic principles of fire aiming in mid-flight, and how to wear and fly with different types of armor, from leather to iron and steel. Still, she couldn’t learn to wear the saddle because Ainion refused to mount her, saying that she’d still have to wait for “that someone just for you”.
As Ainion was so sweet to her, whenever her father wasn’t around, Atalanta started wondering if she wasn’t really developing feelings for the elf.
On one snowy Winter day, after a wrestling lesson with her father, which proved to be another clear example to him of what she would never accomplish, Atalanta managed to slightly harden her heart, and finally felt that she had enough. “I can’t stand it anymore!” - she roared - “I wished mother was here instead of you and that you’d be lying right now in Galbatorix’ throne room as a trophy!!!” Furious for the insult, Ariston slapped her with his claws and did not pulled back when she engaged in a serious fight with him for respect. Knowing she would never have the chance to win, Atalanta retreated and managed to escape to her birthplace, the forest.
She called out for her mother several times for three days and three nights long, but she couldn’t even catch her scent. She found some older dragons who knew her story from when she was kidnapped. They knew Phoebe had fallen ill since her daughter’s departure and was killed and ate by some Urgals a few months later. But they felt so sorry for Atalanta, they didn’t had the heart to tell her the truth, just saying they didn’t know anything on Phoebe’s whereabouts.
After that, Atalanta started to wander alone in the forest, and whenever she gets a good spot like a hill, she likes to take a good look into the elven towns.
Dreams for future: to lead a spontaneous but peaceful life near a trustworthy mate and have eggs she can watch grow and become valiant Alagaësia peace keepers one day; she secretly dreams to have an elf rider
Reasons for dreams: she has always been the “settle down” type of girl; check the first fun fact
Fun fact: she seems to be easily attracted to male elves.
Fun fact 2: she has a younger sister called Selene, whose existence she’s unaware. Their mother laid Selene's egg short before she had been murdered. The egg's location is still unknown.
Fun fact 3: despite being a dragon herself she does have an animal companion. It's Horus the Hawk, Phoebe's old friend, who was sent by her to keep an eye on Atalanta after she died. It's Horus who will give Atalanta the news of her mother's death. He doesn't show up constantly but keeps Atalanta informed about the forest, if there are some news and such, also assuming the wise adviser role.
(author’s note: Atalanta’s original story (as Ariston’s, Ainion’s and Phoebe’s) is a bit different from this version which I wrote specifically for the use in eragon related forums. They have a history of their own, I’m still writing and rp“ing”, but some of its principles are against some of the Inheritance world’s “laws”. Anyhoo… hope u like her anyways.
