It cost £130 to fix and I lost everything except files I'd made, so software, settings, favourites, hardware installed, all that jazz is gone. I just had to download reinstall firefox and iTunes, set up e-mails again and all that.

Well I had the black screen of death really, it was just lucky we could save all our documents. I reckon it was a virus because it had similar symptoms to something that happened before when we had a trojan. On the upside we now have a 320GB hd whereas our old on was only 160GB. _________________ . . . . . .

A Trojan shouldn't exactly open up a black screen like that unless the owner commands it to. It will only give A-Z control of your computer to the owner of the Trojan. It might be some other virus. ASM (Assembly Languag) Viruses often are responsible for "black screens" or system malfunction or unknown data loss etc. Try scanning your computer with your anti-virus (full scan). And try to see if you got automatic updates for Windows in April or March or even this month and the one previous to this. And if you still have problems like this, you can always PM me =) |

Re: Shout your bad news to the world Hmm I don't exactly know, I had been freezing a lot then one day the black screen pops up and I don't remember exactly what it said but there was option to start Windows normally, in safe mode and that kind of thing. I ran daily quick virus scans and weekly full scans so I don't really know what it was. Seems to be ok now though. I really should have listened to that 2 hour lecture on malware in college the other week

Re: Shout your bad news to the world Firetongue - That is a normal windows start-up checker before redirecting you too your desktop, its not a problem at all. It only happens when your PC undergoes an unexpected shutdown. So when you restart, that black screen pops-up just before the "Windows is Loading" screen. There are normally three options :
Start Windows in Safe Mode, Start Windows With Command Prompt OR Start Windows Normally. I believe there should be a 27 or 30 second timer which will automatically redirect you to whichever option you've highlighted. You should always click on the last option if you dont know much about computers and DoS. It will work fine (=. And yeah its not exactly a "Black Screen of Death" lol. |

One more thing you might wanna try, is when you turn your PC on, the first blue screen appears. Just then, press ESC three time just to make sure or hold it down for 3-4 seconds. Then you'll be redirected to another screen asking which drive you wanna start your computer with. Choose the last one, which will say something like "4th Drive". Then try restarting. Yeah lol one thing almost everyone including programmers (like me) get frustrated about easily is the fact that if we dont understand the fact that EVERY computer lags indefinately lol. Once I had to keep my PC on for 3 hours for Windows to load lol. Me andol others like Sid had patience beaten into our skull by our trainers lol. Lol if that happens again, try leaving it on for a few hours and see if that works lol. If it doesn't, then you might want to post a message on Microsoft's forums. =) |

Nah, I don't think I will. Call me crazy, but I'd actually prefer to do all the work. Sometimes I have to trust myself to things done. Over the course of the year, I've relied too much on other people, so from now I'm going to start taking things into my own hands. I know it's pointless now to make that decision, considering the school year is nearly over, but I'll keep this goal for next year too. Lol. _________________
