I counted up the days it took for Saphira to hatch for Eragon and came up with about 2 months. How can that work when the old Dragon Riders walked past the eggs and touched them to see if they would hatch? It would take about 2 years for an egg to hatch (or longer) if that was how the system worked, leave an egg with a candidate for two months, if it don't hatch onto the next. What's going on?!

The way I understood it, was the prospective Riders walked past the egg in broad daylight and the egg would hatch for them if they were meant to be dragon and Rider. She could have hatched the first night! Remember in Eldest she said, " I chose you from within my egg." Or at least it was something like that. Either way, it doesn't add up.

She was in an egg harder than any known substance on Earth. I doubt it mattered.

I'm not so sure. It said in Eragon he thought about leaving the egg where he found it. Instead, he kept it. The book said something like, " Something stayed his hand though, and he put it in his pack thinking that at the very least, it would buy some food." So I think Saphira chose him when he first picked up the egg. So why didn't she hatch for him the first night or right then like other Rider's dragons did for them?

I dunno, she still could have hatched for him the first night. Aside from showing his family the egg, putting it away, and testing it like Merlock did, he barely touched it. So I think that's why she chose him the first time he touched her egg, but that still doesn't explain why she didn't hatch. And how about we leave this here until we can get someone else to post their opinion.

It means that it took some time for Saphira to come to the conclusion that Eragon was the right person to be his Rider!

If youv'e read the books, which you have, then you probably have noticed that Saphira isn't very hasty. The only times when she has been were when her "maternal instincts" kicked in because Eragon got in trouble.

I mean, her magic color is already green, she's the most powerful of all the Elves we've dealt with (yes, stronger than Vanir) and it gives Eragon a chance with her! Everyone is happy!!!! (except for you, I never figured out how you could become a Vanir fan!)

me and vanir have almost the same personality but we dont know whos stronger between Arya and Vanir because theve never fought

i dont think saphira chose eragon rite then wen he found her and then just waited for the time to hatch, i think in those to months she was seeing wat eragon was like and if he would make a good rider and if she liked him or not.

maybe saphira ws jus doubtful about the time..as in she must've been confused about the zillion people parading past her for such a long time, and so did not judge Eragon instantly, but continued to affect him in a way..but temme, does it really matter?
i mean they have a perfect relationship and they're closer than ever!

maybe she waited those 2 months because this would be the person the bring back the riders, and she was just making sure...like when there was lots of other riders she could pick in an instant, but when the weigh of her race was on her shoulders saphira wasnt gunna take any chances.
