Post Grey Folk?
In Eldest, Oromis briefly mentions a race called the Grey Folk and how their language was the ancient language and how the somehow made it have it's unique qualities. (magic control and able to describe the true nature of things.) Do you think they will somehow affect book 4? The tiny mention of them infuriates me and leaves me thirty for more info on them. Theories?

Yes it will probably be mentioned in book 4. In my opinion I believe there are some grey folk left and Eragon will meet them.

I was thinking something like that too. I have read a LOT of fanfiction having to do with the grey folk.

I bet there is a lot of fan fiction about them but I haven't seen any. Can you send me a link to some, I really want to read it.

The last one I read was in a forum which is gone now, but it was about a dragon rider who was one of the grey folk and how he met eragon and stuff happened. I wonder is eragon will meet any.

Well that can't be true because the grey folk is a separate race from all the others and only the elves and humans made pacts with the grey folk and with there only being one egg left that is unhatched, there is no way that one of them could have a dragon (on the idea that they are alive) which I don't believe they are. It's not fiction enough that some magical race will come out of nowhere to help win the war.

@gomenesigh
And how would you know that? did any of us expect the werecats to come out of hiding? or for there to have been a fourth book at all? naw anything is possible at this point, unless of course your the one editing the fourth book.. are you? nope :D

And BTW it is possible for some sort of grey folk to have survived its called descendants. Not everything was wiped out or elves, urgals, humans wouldnt even exist.

Fist of all you don't have to be rude. Second of all, it doesn't matter that no one expected that the werecats came out of hiding. The point is is that they existed in the first place. Oromis said that they faded and as far as anyone knows, that is exactly what happened. I also believe that Elves and humans did not originate on Alagaesia so they are not originally connected with the Grey folk at all. The urgals and dwarfs might be but it is unlikely. I never said they were wiped out but that doesn't mean that they exist now. Oromis said they faded. And do not use caps when talking to me. It's in the rules and is very rude.

*pondering* I don't remember reading anything about the Grey Folk having grey skin... It could be possible, but I don't see how a species that incredibly powerful could be reduced to something like an Urgal. :? Although I specifically remember reading that the Grey Folk married and bred into the younger races after they used up most of their power binding magic to the AL, so it could be possible...

Although I think the word grey in 'Grey Folk' is more about the way how they faded after that event. After all, grey is a faded color.

never thought of it that way. still, if they were calledthe Grey Folk by your reason, wouldn't it make more sense to call them the Ancient Folk or something of that nature?

True, but I bet if Paolini had called them something like that, somebody would have cried plagiarism again. Too many fantasy novels now-a-days use the term 'ancient' to describe some old powerful race that will or has played a part in their stories. With the name Grey Folk, he created something new.

(At least as far as I know there are no other books involving Grey Folk floating around out there.)

Watch yourself lam, that's how fights get started. I'm not ridiculing what he's saying. He asked me a question on my reasoning and I answered.

It makes me wonder though. How advanced must the Grey Folk have been to come up with a solution like they did?

OT: They must have been very advanced. I would say that they discovered the true name of magic itself, but they hadn't made the language have that property yet. So I'm really not sure.

It's possible that in the time before they "faded", they discovered it. After all, they were the one's who basically created true names, if anybody had the power to figure it out, it would have been them.

yeah, they probably would have known how. Now the question is how they did it. My theory hooks into the fact that before they did this action, all magicians used just their minds to use magic, but there was an accident that somehow almost wiped out all life. So maybe their most powerful magicians got together and concentrated with all their might, used some large energy source, and gave their language its properties.

I don't remember the part about the Grey Folk or about other parts of magic but I don't remember anyone saying that all magicians used to only use their minds. We also know from the books that some event did in fact happen and the Grey Folk made magic somehow also bound with language. I also believe that they never would have tried to look for the name of it because of how much power it would give to whoever knew it and if one of the Grey Folk that was the cause of whatever that horrible event was, someone finding out the name who had ill intentions could lead to something worse. That could have been the reason behind the event.

Oromis did say that magic used to be directed by the spell caster's thoughts, but that it was dangerous because the effect of the spell could be changed by a stray thought. I think his example was that before the "binding" a magician could burn a door simply by accessing the magic and imagining the door burning, but that if they thought of their friend, the spell could mutate and burn their friend instead of the door.

I don't remember where this was exactly, but I know it was right after Vanir and Eragon went at it on the practice field.

Oromis' example was to say that someone could think "burn that door" but then have a stray thought unrelated to the spell muddle it up and kill/destroy (insert stray thought here).

Also, they Grey Folk would definately know the name for magic, as it was their language, but after the AL was bound, the remaining Grey Folk most likely saw the danger of the true name of magic, and laid a blanket memory loss spell on the name, much like the Forsworn dragons' names.

That can't be completely true because the last living Ra'zac said that Galby was close to finding 'the name' and since most people believe that it was referring to the name of the ancient language, he wouldn't be able to be close to finding it if there was a memory loss spell cast over it. Plus, if they are so great and magical even with all that Galby has gained in power, he wouldn't be able to override their magic.

@Raud: That's my point. :? Back before they bound magic to their language, the spellcaster's directed the magic with their thoughts, but it was dangerous because of what could happen if the magician was distracted even a little bit.

And I agree with gome, how could he be close to be finding the name if a memory-erasing spell was lying in wait for anyone who found it?

Well, glaby could be close to finding it, but hadn't found it yet, which would mean he woldn lose his memory yet. I personally think that's a bit of a boring end for galby, cos if he lost his memory, he would lose his twistedness, because he couldnt remeber he lost his dragon, so he couldnt remeber he was king, anything. The eragon could just waltz up and lop off his head.

That isn't how it works. If there was a protection spell over the name of the ancient language, and he found it he wouldn't lose his entire memory. He would just lose the memory of the name or more of he wouldn't be able to think about it or anything.

I think finding the true name is a bit of a dead end. I think the Ra'zac meant eragons name.

Post Re: Grey Folk?
He would have to guess Eragons name since they never met before... and i dont think CP would make galby analyse Eragon through others minds. Galby is so freaking strong, why should HE analyse thorugh others minds. He would be a coward and pathetic...

What about the true name of Murtagh? It would fit in the story line...
He realised Murtaghs name and made him say the most crucial things in the AL. Eventually he'll send him out to capture Eragon alive.

Since he only had the most important things sworn, he was able to let Eragon go..

Galby already knows Murtagh's true name... Have you read the 3rd book yet?

Aww messed it up. Thought he meets Murtagh after his run back to the varden. But he learns it at the end of Book two already.
Then its not possible ;P

But still i dont believe hes searching for the word of the ancient language. would be way too powerful.

Maybe the name of the oldest Dragon eldunari there is? That would be a decent information source ;D

Oh ok then lol. But this topic isn't to talk about what Galby might be searching for and there is another topic that does talk about just that. This topic is for talking about the Grey Folk.
