LOTR is the greatest to be honest! but it's a bit too serious. Harry Potter maybe far from perfect but it's more like entertaining..

Lol you must not like RPG based movies becuase youv gota understand why they show them traveling in the movie(not just to waist time) they do it becuase so you can gain an idea of how big the world they are fighten for really is and that it aint just a werid thing like here today half across the world tomarrow and also the other hobbits(not frodo and sam) travel and run into alot of things so in books like LOTR the traveling is one of the most importain parts(at points) but I can see were your goin with HP

Harry Potter and LOTR are different genres of fiction altogether - they employ different writing styles and are/were aimed at two completely different cross-sections of society. It is hard to 'pick a favourite' therefore. I probably enjoyed Harry Potter more because it used simpler language and therefore required less effort and time to fully understand. But harry potter will never be better than LOTR lol

I will always choose LOTR over HP any day.I love the way LOTR is setup its action/romance/thriller all in one.Plus i think when you read LOTR, yes its hard to understand at times but when you finally figure out what that part means and you finish the book it gives you a good feeling, that you didn't give up on it you read it and now it makes sence and you can help someone else who is having a prob with that section. Not only that but by the time your done reading the trilogy you have a better vocabulary. LoL

plus lotr is alot mor original than Harry potter cause i've read or heard of several books like harry potter with there being a wizards school that only wizards now about and an orphan who has some deformity that proves how special he is. but the idea of a ring of power now who would have thought of that

what you say is true to an extent haydenblowers... but harry potter is indeed a one-of-a-kind book if you look at the series in comparison to the others out there... any others that were written with similar concepts were either very badly written or cheap copies written after hp came out.
On the other hand... LOTR follows the classic trilogy setup - and although LOTR was one of the first, it was not the very first. Look at the ton of trilogies that have spewed out of the world of fantasy following the exact same setup... Inheritance Trilogy included...

I reckon the harry potter BOOKS are better than LOTR, because of the writing style. However, the actual story & plot of LOTR is best 4 me.

HARRY POTTER ALL THE WAY!!!! its a real Original , lord of the rings is just a copy of a mythology story that wasn't even that great to start off with. And the books are to hard to fallow and JrrT explains things too much that its hard to tell whats really going on.
Harry Potter is hands down the greatest series that has ever existed, JkR ideas are so fresh and fun, that anyone at any agr can enjoy them, where in LOTR you have to be older to understand them because of the writting style.
Now I;m not insulting anyone who likes LOTR, I'm just saying Harry Potter is better. lol.
Only the last book suck! it was like she (JKR) didn't even write it.
Now if your talking movies, then LOTR is the far better of the tweo because the h.p; movies are all messed up, I curse them! And i get in huge arguments with anyone who likes them, lol
Yeah... So I like Harry Potter

LOTR nowadays blends in with the crowd of fantasy books which have been written in a similar style, which is sad, because most of the stuff written now isn't good at all which turns the whole fantasy genre into a 5-12 yr old reading range. But LOTR, while based on ancient mythology, had no precedents, although it may seem like it today

yea LOTR is inspired (i think) from scandinavian mythology, and it's just for the creatures elf and dwarf, but i don't know about hobbit race, i never heard about hobbit, i heard it first on LOTR. And the plot and the map is sooo real (they even have it's scale!).
Harry potter is confusing.. Remember on Book 2 when he and ron missed the train because Dobby made Harry unable to go through the 3/4 platform? He and ron then from there ride the car to Hogwarts.. If im not mistaken they're went from the mugle train station and without crossing any dimension (like the platform) or any portkey, they just flew and suddenly meet hogwart express on the road!! It doesn't make sense!!

hm interesting fathskie I see how that doesnt make sense... but for the general audience harry potter targets, I doubt many kids would pick it up. Still, you can see the fact that the harry potter books were evidently created to a much lower degree of preparation than LOTR. but they will both be classics of literature I think

HP is for kids mainly, the new ones are darker and more advanced though, it's not even that good. Tolkien made elves what they are today. Why are they called tolkien elves? He made the idea of giant, brutish trolls. He made up orcs and hobbits completely as well as a few other things. Harry Potter stoll trolls, and dumblodore is a copy of gandalf.

Good point Glenwing plus he added much of the characteristics that dwarves have nowadays like i think he came up with the idea of them living underground but i am not sure.
And on another note who else knew that C.S. Lewis (the righter of the chronicles of narnia) and J.R.R. Tolkien where best friends

I don't think rowling exactly stole the trolls etc from tolkien... because tolkien has essentially created a stereotype for many fantasy creatures which a huge number of fantasy writers use nowadays. JK Rowling is basically playing the common stereotypes of the many fantasy creatures in her book.
yeah, Tolkien and Lewis were best friends. However, Tolkien was Catholic and Lewis was some random christian denomination. it is interesting to notice the deeply entrenched christian symbolism in their books (most prominently seen in Lewis's later work)

Harry Potter is not for kids anymore. Not sure if u read the last book,m but it is full of horny teenagers everywhere. I think after the fourth, it is not ment for Children under 11 or something.
LOTR was bassed off this mythology story involving 9 or so rings of power that were fourged by these ppl, and a war started over them and yea.... I don;t want to fight about it, but Harry Potter will always be the best for me because it saved my school life. I hated reading and all that and barley passed any of my classes, my friends forced, like lyterly forced me under peer pressure, to read the books, and I loved it and because of that I want 2 become a writter... idk, I think it has something 2 do with the books.
Also have u seen interviews of teminaly ill (sp) children who were saved by those books? i love them. lo.

I'm agree with the "adult scene" you mentioned, night fire..! I was kinda shock when i was reading those chapters i felt like "WOW, Rowling what r u thinking??"
Seriously i don't think JK rowling deserve to be the richest author in england... She even planning to kill Harry in her latest book!!! She said she's getting tired writing about Harry so in one of her interviews she said, jokingly of course, but i think she mean it, "i'm going to kill Harry Potter"
what was that?? See Enid Blyton?? How she wrote about famous five and other children novels for years and see Agatha Christie?? created hercule poirot and ms Marple for years and NOT slightly getting bored!!! And JK Rowling is as plain as day floored such statement while she was only wrote 6 (SIX) books!!!

I love the stories of both, but I prefer the writing style of HP because there is more character development.

this topic will go on forever... the hp fans keep on making the same point over and over, while LOTR fans have gone quiet.

If u had any sense, LOTR would be your top choice. It must be too advanced for a lot of you.

Yea, they did the same with TCON, they took out semi-important parts, it made me mad. But over all it was a good movie.

acually I liked Narnia...only instead of takening things out, they added their own things, that was a little weird. Like Edmund seeing Tumnus in jail and the whole lake scene, yeah... what else? ummm I really liked the beging, it wasn;t in the book but it was why they left

hmm... my brother said that narnia was a good movie, but that it could have been better... I would probably agree to an extent... I reckon it would have been really good if they had made it spectacular like LOTR movies or something... as it was, the movie was still good but they could have improved various aspects of it to just make it stunning

Narnia was focused more on children than adults, so i guess some people may think otherwise. but i agree, it could have been better.

Harry Potter books move too slow????? And how on earth do you think LOTR moves? Did you READ ALL the books or did you just watch the movies? The movies simplified the plot and made them a lot more understandable. The romance between Aragon and Arwen, in the books, never happened! That was included in a small part in the Appendix.
The one of the four books that moved a liiiiiitle faster was the Hobbit, the others dragged on and on. The songs, the descriptions...

well you see i like the songs and descriptions
I guess it was the writing style i was commenting on when i said that. not exactly how slow it was I guess i should have written it a little more understandable.

Personally, I was drawn to read Tolkein, CS Lewis, Nesbitt and other others because I had read that these authors had had a great influence in JK Rowling's writing. So I was curious to see if I would be able to "sense" their influence. As a result I did not like Tolkein's style, but I loved Nesbitt and Lewis. Jane Austn I had read many times before and I believe I have read almost everything she wrote. I treasure the movies of the LOTR series as they are a masterpiece in many ways.
So I think it comes to a matter of personal liking and not if one is better than the other. I do enjoy her red herrings and the twists and turns of her plot. I love that she makes the character believable. But then as you see in my signature, I just love reading.

Youst last week I was thinking about HP... I think I'm bored of it...I mean Harry looks so adoult and side characters so childish and it's allways he who discover something and then he get out witouth big problems. And Dumledore dead? Oh, please you could find that out before you start reading the six book! And the movie. Great special effects but, not enough details... At least they could get Ucha (or what ever the house elf is) and on the end how Hary gives his turnament money to twins.

ShadowSong, I wish I could make sense out of your post. I honestly cannot understand it very well.
I could understand that you are bored with the series, fantastic special effects (that I personally found soooo fake) and about the omission of many important details.
The fourth movie is a repeat dissapointment of the third one. Movies one and two are so much closer to the books than the last two. What will happen with 5, Gee I am so scared.
I have opted to stick to the books which are so much better. The movies, I buy because I am a true and loyal fan, but not because they are especially great.
When you come to books, made great movies we can say that the LOTR series tops them all.
I thought Chronicles of Narnia was very well made..
But the Potter series, just movie 1 and 2.

the characters in LOTR r confusing, they jump around 2 much. One sec its Sam than Aragon, I hate when writtiers do that! (Truthfully I was pissed at C.P in the last Eragon book.....but then again maybe that was because Roran scared the sh*t out of me) I like Harry's dreams 2, and just hogwarts in general, I wish was there, and she trully shows what it is like to grow up. In the first one Harry thought 2 much and his ideas didn't work out like a normal kid, in the 5 one he went theough puperty and yelling like a teenager and experaminting with girls. Its easier to feel emotion when its like that cause u can relate and because there's only one main character. But its just me i guess, but Harry Potter has made me cry countless time, LOTR i was like....ok....sad....moving on.... I cried 4 like 3 days when Sirius died because Harry, he just....idk, it just reminded me of losing someone, the way it was written....

well i think that like all long series Jk is sorta ruining it (for me anyway) it is usually unpreventable because you have to make books more interesting and that often includes the deaths of major and minor characters. Maybe if she had made the series a little shorter (This is just my oppinion, if you do not think so well i have no problem with it) in lotr yes people died but it didn't get to the point where too many major characters died or turned bad.

I'm little bored of HP....C'm on! Allways same thing. Someone dies (or olmoust dies), HP is the hero...
Geesh, I wouldn't be suprise if in 7th book Dumbledore comes back.... And I was a fan of HP... JK is joust makin longer books to get money (there soppost to be eight book with ''missing parts'')! Sirius died in book number 5 (Pheonix order). O, by do way is anybody else disapointed by HP4 movie? They ruind the story (no Ucha, no middle scenes, no Doby, no scene when Harry gives money to twins...)!
