Vanir is an arrogant JERK who loves dragons so much that he didn't trust Saphira's judgement. I think his loyalty towards the dragons is biased. As long as Saphira hatched for another elf he would have been happy. I also believe that he was so afraid of death and his race being erased that he hid himself behind the shield of arrogance. I DO NOT LIKE HIM.

After rereading some Vanir scenes, I have changed my opinion of him. He seems to have believed so strongly in his race that he was shaken by a human rider's appearance, and it is undersatandable that he would hit low blows, such as bringing up Eragon's back. He really just seemed to want a leader he could look up to and respect, and once Eragon was elf-ified, Vanir was able to see him as a better person/hero/rider.

Granted. After Eragon's transformation from the dragons he apologized;however, I still believe he feared the end of his race, thus his own life. I also grant him the fact that it was another human that had destroyed the riders, the elven leaders and all they stood for; nevertheless, he never gave Eragon a chance. He focused in humilliating him instead of working with him in order for Eragon to improve. But then, human beings in a way usually act as Vanir did at one time or another I still don't like him, but he did grow when he acknowledged the error of his way.

For a moment there I thought I was writing in a language other than English. Thank you for letting me know I am not crazy.

So Eragon 109, once Eragon was changed by the dragons, he whipped Vanir's assets in the sparring field AND he broke his arm. Vanir being an elf never got to broke anything in Eragon. He won over and over because he had the speed and that's it.

At times, fear can make people arrogant and cocky. It's a mask many people use to hide it, and I believe this was the case with Vanir AKA Twit.

Vanir thought Eragon was weak (and he was indeed). He was weak, as a young human he was nothing compare to Elven and Shade.

When Eragon couldn't even compete with an Elf, how could Vanir trust Eragon would win against the whole Empire?? (read: Galbatorix!)
Vanir's fear, apart from whether it was a "mask" or whatever, is very natural and understandable. Therefore, when he found out that Eragon is getting stronger, he immediately changed his behaviour because he already overcome his feeling.

Nothing to do with his anger/ fear. He simply relieved and assured.

At first I oppose him too, but when I look as in psychological way, his act indeed make sense. We happened to "hate" Vanir because he was somewhat cruel to Eragon.. But I agree with Eragon109, Vanir really should train Eragon to become stronger not weaker.. but because deep down in his heart Vanir already believe that Eragon was weak, he continued to "torture" him not with an intention to build him but to prove that Eragon was a failure of Riders... If you come to think of it, this story line is as old as the Earth. Humble boy/girl, usually orphaned, loses someone important to him/her, discovers he/her has special powers, finds a stranger who mentors him/her, mentor dies and apprentice has to finalize the journey alone. Apprentice wins the battle and becomes a hero/heroine!
