Fletcher
Because I needed something other than a dragon, elf, or human this time...
Name: Fletcher
Age: 57 years
Gender: Male
Race: Gryphon
Skills: 1. Telekinesis- Fletcher can move objects with his mind. This is an ability that he was born with. The amount of energy needed to move an object depends on its size. Fletcher can move a boulder the size of a small house and only use a moderate amount of energy doing it. Telekinesis is also useful in protecting himself. Fletcher can stop spears, arrows and other projectiles and even launch them right back at whoever fired them. The ability is only effective against objects within 100 feet of Fetcher.
2. Speech: Fletcher was modified by his master’s spell casters to enhance his abilities. One enhancement was the ability of verbal speech, something that no other gryphon has, at least as far as Fletcher is aware. Although he can still communicate telepathically like any other gryphon, Fletcher prefers to speak verbally when communicating with others. Fletcher can also speak the ancient language.
3. Defensive spells: Like a dragon, Fletcher cannot use most of his magic any way he wants. He can, however, produce very powerful protective spells. These spells can protect both his body and mind from almost any magic assault. The amount of energy needed to cast these spells varies depending on how many wards he uses.
4. Mental screech: Another ability given to Fletcher by Agatha’s spellcasters is the ability to imitate a fanghur’s mental screech. Unfortunately it didn’t work out as planned. While the ability is every bit as powerful as the real thing, it requires a great amount of energy to use, forcing Fletcher to use it only as a last resort. He can’t use it more than twice at a time and unfortunately dragons and seem to be immune to its effects as well. One upside is that the mental screech is difficult to block with magic, making it a perfect stunning weapon. It can be used against multiple enemies at once. The mental screech’s effects can be reduced by wards though, to the point that it only stuns for a few seconds.
5. Combat: Fletcher is a fierce fighter. He doesn’t usually go looking for trouble but when necessary, he is a force to be reckoned with. His various magic abilities, combined with his natural fighting abilities makes him a deadly opponent in a fight. Agatha has used Fletcher as a personal assassin numerous times, albeit against his will. He is also a very fast and agile flier, capable of outmaneuvering most dragons in flight.
Hair: Brown feathers on the front part of his body and head. Tawny hair on the back part of his body.
Eyes: golden amber
Home Village: None. He hatched in the Boer Mountains.
Parents: Taggart (father) and Elees (mother) Both were murdered by Agatha when she enslaved Fletcher.
Siblings: Three brothers and two sisters including his younger sister Mirriana.
Character Personality: Fletcher is brave and bold, a trait of his species but he is also respectful to others and avoids confrontations whenever possible. He longs for a friend or companion. He has either spent most of his life alone or carrying out orders from Agatha, his ruthless master. He has a kind heart despite the abuse he has endured at Agatha’s hands. He believes that all sentient life has value and to blatantly disregard it is one of the greatest sins a person can commit. That does not mean that he won't kill or injure you if you mess with him, but he'd rather avoid it if possible. Even when he hunts he tries to kill his prey as quickly and painlessly as possible. Fletcher doesn't go looking for trouble but he is a good fighter. Fletcher has also retained the strong sense of pride that his that his species that his species is known for, despite Agatha’s efforts to stomp it out of him. Because of this, he hates to be offended. However, unlike most gryphons, he probably won't rip you to shreds for ticking him off. He despises Agatha because of her cruelty and the suffering she has forced him to endure. She hates him too and the only reason she doesn’t just kill him is because she needs him in order to stay alive. Fletcher longs to be free from this hellish torment once and for all but there is nothing he can do about it now. Agatha knows his true name and can control him. While he tries to be gentle towards others and does not wish to take lives needlessly, he would be willing to make an exception for his master if he got the chance. Fletcher is intelligent and educated. During his free time when Agatha did not have any use for him, he was taught to read the common written language of the humans by a kind mage that he met. Fletcher tries to refrain from violence whenever possible but he does not take kindly to being insulted nor does he (willingly) bow down to anyone. He worries about what the future holds for him though and despite his best efforts to remain optimistic, Fletcher always has an impending sense of doom hanging over him. He knows that if Agatha ever finds a way to cure her condition, she will no longer need him and will likely kill him. Fletcher hates to be called names and absolutely loaths the misconception that his kind are nothing more than dumb animals. In fact, that notion deeply upsets him. He is witty and lively and likes to talk to others whenever possible. Fletcher loves his mate, Sevena, and his children more than anything else in the world. He is fiercely loyal to his family and friends.
Character History: Fletcher was hatched in the Boer Mountains fifty-seven years ago. His early life was rather uneventful. He was raised by his mother and father and learned how to survive and fend for himself. Then, just when Fletcher was almost full grown, disaster struck. Agatha, a ruthless smuggler and criminal, along with a band of minions, attacked the gryphons, killing all but Fletcher. Instead, he was randomly chosen by Agatha to be used for her own evil purposes. Agatha suffered from a rare disease which only had one remedy. One of the ingredients was fresh gryphon’s blood. Because gryphons were difficult to control, Agatha chose only to keep one alive. Thus began a long and painful cycle of abuse for young Fletcher. After much effort, Agatha’s spell casters finally managed to break into Fletcher’s mind, learning his true name and giving Agatha the ability to control him. Twice a year, Agatha would have to extract a small amount of his blood for the antidote to her condition. For many years, this was Fletcher’s only purpose in life. He spent most of his time locked up, starving and neglected, in a dungeon beneath Agatha’s headquarters. Then one day things changed. Agatha needed a way to rid herself of rival gang leaders without implicating herself. Realizing that Fletcher could be a useful tool, Agatha had her magicians make modifications to the young gryphon, giving him the ability to speak and to imitate a fanghur’s mind screech. Any time Fletcher protested against being sent on an assassin mission, he was beaten and starved for a week. Still, the gryphon’s spirit did not break. He clung to hope that he may one day escape his enslavement and take revenge against Agatha for what she had put him through. Things took a turn for the better though when Agatha granted Fletcher temporary freedom on the condition that he must return to her twice a year to give blood for her treatments or whenever she summons him for an assignment. This was insured by making him swear an oath in the Ancient language. During his free time, Fletcher explored the lands around the Empire, though he was forbidden to leave Alagaesia. One day, Fletcher was flying along when he found a group of urgals attacking a town. Using his new abilities, the gryphon was able to stop the attack without taking any lives in the process. Unfortunately the townspeople, believing that Fletcher was just there to cause them more harm, turned on him and he narrowly escaped while getting an arrow in his back. Within a couple days the wound had become infected and Fletcher became gravely ill. He collapsed in the forest and was found by a kind mage who took pity on the wounded gryphon. The mage cared for Fletcher and nursed him back to health. Fletcher returned to visit the mage several times and the mage gradually taught him to read the human written language and educated him about the culture of the various people in the land. Unfortunately Fletcher still must return to Agatha twice a year to give blood for Agatha’s treatment.
Character History Update 1: Agatha eventually found a way to cure her illness so that she no longer needed Fletcher. Fearing for his life, the gryphon made his way into Du Weldenvarden to seek help from the elves. Instead he encountered an ice/water dragon called Samantha who agreed to help him free himself from Agatha's control. Together they attacked Agatha's stronghold in Gilead. Taking advantage of Agatha's extreme fear of dragons, Samantha forced Agatha to grant Fletcher his freedom. Shortly afterward, Fletcher and Sam fled to Dantuhania where they would be out of reach of her in case she decided to retaliate. While traveling through through the mountains, they were ambushed by the Vanquishers. Fletcher was badly injured when an arrow pierced one of his lungs. He would have died had Violeta not found them and healed the wound. Currently Fletcher resides at a monastery with Violeta, Natagath and his new best friend, Samantha.
Character History Update 2: While out hunting one morning, Fletcher encountered a female gryphon named Sevena, who had secretly been sent to Danthuania by the gryphon king Iaras to search for his mother. Fletcher told Sevena about his past and inadvertently caused her to realize that Iaras had been using her. Sevena was devastated by this but nevertheless revealed her intention to meet Iaras when he arrived in person. Like Agatha, Iaras drank gryphon's blood though it was to give him strength rather than to cure an illness. Fletcher found this to be worse than Agatha. He pitied Sevena and began to develope feelings for her as he got to know her better. He traveled with Sevena to meet Iaras and although he was initially polite to the king, he secretly hated Iaras for what he was doing to Sevena. Fletcher and his new friend returned to the monastery while Iaras took the long way. The next morning Sevena was ambushed by Vanquishers and Fletcher and Violeta saved her. While Sevena was recovering Fletcher stayed with her. After Iaras arrived at the monastery, Sevena still intended to return to her homeland with him out of a sense of duty. However, Fletcher revealed that he cared for her and that he loved her. Unfortunately Iaras caught them and in a last ditch effort to stop Iaras from taking Sevena away forever, Fletcher challenged the larger and older gryphon to a duel. Against all the odds, Fletcher emerged victorious and was able to finally be with Sevena, accepting her as his mate.
Character Update 3: During a trip with Sevena and Violeta, Fletcher learned that his sister, Mirriana was alive in Alagaesia. After traveling to the Boer Mountains with Sevena, they were confronted by Iaras and Agatha, who were holding Mir hostage. Although Iaras and Agatha initially blackmailed Fletcher and Sevena into helping them find Iaras's mother, The gryphons eventually managed to free her with the help of Hurricane. After freeing Mirriana, Fletcher returned to Danthuania with his family. Shortly afterward, Sevena gave birth to their son, Tas, and their daughter, Vena.
Weapons: Talons, sharp beak, mental screech and telekinesis.
Likes: Being away from Agatha, meeting new friends, flying, exploring
Dislikes: Agatha and all the pain she has put him through, killing, being alone all the time, being hungry, being called names, regarded as a dumb animals or otherwise insulted.
Weakness / Fear: Fletcher fears what the future holds for him. He knows that Agatha would kill him if she could and that his life is in danger as long as he remains her slave. He also fears for the safety of his new family.
Animal Companions: None
Character's Physical Description: Fletcher is a handsome gryphon. He is about the size of a small horse. Like all gryphons, he has the front end and wings of an eagle and the back end of a lion. The feathers that cover the front end of Fletcher’s body and wings are a dark shade of brown with a slight hint of gold, like those of a golden eagle, while the feathers on his wingtips are a light shade of grey. The fur on the back end of his body is a warm tawny color like a lion’s fur. Fletcher has a fan of feathers on the end of his tail which he uses to stabilize himself in flight. Fletcher has many scars from the abuse he has endured during his life but most of them are concealed by his feathers. He does have a noticeable one on his back just behind the shoulders though from where he was shot in the back with an arrow while saving a village. He also has a few scars on his front legs from where Agatha has cut him to collect blood for her treatments. Fletcher’s eyes are golden amber in color. Since he has been released from Agatha's power, Fletcher has grown stronger and more muscular.
Dreams for the Future: To be free from Agatha’s control. He also wants to find a mate or companion.
Reason for Dreams: He has endured unspeakable acts at her hands. He lives a very lonely life and really needs a companion.
Alignment/side: To his family and friends. Formerly to Agatha (unwillingly).
PS: Yes, I am going to do a profile for Agatha next. She's a real piece of work.
