I’m not sure I spelled the tree name correctly.

Hello everyone…I’m new to this site… I just finished reading Brisingr again and I had a question that was nagging me the first time I read it. What do you think the tree took from Eragon? I mean it had to be something special and what effects will it have on him…anyone has some insight or theories???

well i'm not sure what it was that it took, but it took something, and it will affect eragon in book 4 for sure

I'm not sure what it will do, but just having to wait aggravates and scares me

In my opinion, I believe that the trree will become the elf -Linnea?- (I forgot how to spell it) again because eragon will do what she had always wanted. Or maybe he will become the lover she had lost so long ago, and together they will leave alagaesia. It's just a theory, but I think that it's a good idea. What do you think?

It’s a good theory but I don’t see how this can be. I mean CP would have to probably have to do a 5 book just to tell the story of the tree.

I think it is more likely that she took something he will need in battle and she will use it to help the him when she realizes that the elves forest and her self are in danger.

maybe, i just think she probably took part of his power. not much, just part, so that she could sustain

I heard somewhere that the tree may be taking DNA samples from all of the races in Alagaesia? And considering Eragon is now part-human/part-elf he'd be an unusual one to add to her collection?

Although what purpose this could serve I have no idea...

Hm I think the Linnea decided not to ask for any favors. My guess is that when Arya is telling Eragon about the linnea's story, Eragon sympathizes with Linnea. I feel that Linnea understands what Eragon is going through with Arya. The reason why she would know is because she went through his several of his memories.

I think she understands love better than anyone does, because she went through it.

Exactly. I feel that she sympathizes with Eragon. I dont have the book at the moment so i cant look up the pain he felt. I dont recall him having pain during the incident and if he did that could simply be because his head hurts when Linnea breaches his mind. Again ill have to look that up when I can borrow the book again.

Well, when Arya rejected him, that hurt him emotionally, like Linnea's bf did.

I've skimmed over the part where Eragon felt a slight "pain" in this side. This could be the result of the restriction of the flow of blood when Linnea wrapped the branch around his ankle. I'm pretty sure the nerves are connected in a way that other parts of the body can be affected. For example the Spinal cord connects to one's most important nerves. That's why its is so important. However, the nerves function causes pain. I'm not sure if i'm correct about the possible pain due to nerves. However, if you want i can ask my brother later since he is in med school. However, the pain he felt soon receded. Therefore, I doubt it had any significance. Eragon himself is perplexed and wonders why Linnea is not asking for her favor yet.

There are many parts in the book that I feel that are unnecessary. Brisingr has a good story but it's poorly written. Every sentence in the book does not have to have a deeper meaning or significance. The pain he felt doesn't have to have any significance at all.

I have noticed sometimes that I get a pain in my right side every time I get angry or sad, but I think that it's because of something else... I have a problem like that occasionally, I hope it's nothing serious...

Pain is pain. It reduces Eragon's sturdiness, so how could it help him in the war....?

Why would she want to be a part of him? She doesn't like him...

I dunno, maybe becuase she wants revenge and she will make sure that eragon does what she wants.

But she can't really make sure he does what she wants unless he's there...unless it's possible to embed part of a mind into another mind...

I think that when the story ends and the bad guys are killed, the tree will ask Eragon to leave Alageasia for some unknown reason

That's an idea....but why would she want Eragon to leave? *beat* What if she regrets singing herself into the tree and wants him to sing her out?

Maybe because Saphira harmed her and she will ask them both to leave her world.

But that would be just Saphira, Eragon didn't really do anything to her.

Maybe because they are very close, because of their bond - the tree can sence that. Maybe she's just too vengeful Or she will ask it from Saphira only and Eragon will join her, so they can stay together, i don't know :}

Yeah, I guess that works...but maybe all she wants is for him to plant a tree or something....but it's probably not that simple.

if it was to plant a tree, he would have probably planted hundreds of them. lol But I think that she wants him to either get revenge for her, or help her accomplish a task that she can't do while she is a tree.

Maybe she wants revenge on the soldiers who cut down her trees at the edge of the forest...but it's not like he can bring the trees back and tape them onto the stumps.

He doesn't have enough power to bring back that many trees though. And he wouldn't waste Aren's energy on that task...but maybe Glaedr would help...

I wasn't referring to Aren, but it makes sense now that you mention it. Maybe Glaedr can talk to the Menoa tree because he has lived in Ellesmira for a long time, so he can probably convince her to tell eragon what she wants.

I'm randomly wondering if Glaedr and Oromis ever knew the Menoa tree before she was a tree...maybe they have a history.

It is a really good possibility that they did, becasue they have been around ever since the elves first came to Alagaesia, I think.

Makes me randomly wonder who she fell in love with and killed....

Linnëa was an elderly elf maiden who stabed both the man and his lover in the forest before she sang her self into a tree.

i mean the first elf king. i think it would make things intresting, or if it was just any of the elf kings or one of the riders. how long have the riders been around?

The first elven monarch was a queen. The only elven king we know of is Evandar, and he died at Battle of Ilirea. Not by an elf in the forest


It wasn't an elven monarch or a rider. She killed to normal elevs. The one who betrayed her and his lover.


I can't say for sure. But we know that Rhunön was born before the riders and she is over 2700 years old.

What if Linnea killed the first Rider, Eragon? Or wasn't she around then....?

True, but if Saphira had to leave, Eragon would inevitably feel obligated to go with her as well, and he probably would.

"Fire must be extinguished" makes me think that the Menoa Tree wishes for Eragon and Saphira to leave Alagaesia. Saphira is the last female dragon, and if she left, the dragon race would be doomed as far as Alagaesia is concerned.

So where would Eragon and Saphira go? Unless Vroengard isn't a part of Alagaesia, they'd have to fly across the sea or something....

Which does coincide with Eragon's dream. It's possible that he could just go to Vroengard, which technically isn't a part of Alagaesia, however, but this is if the Menoa Tree does tell him to leave Alagaesia, which I find likely.

She doesn't need any humanly possessions, as she said that she only cares about the soil, sun, and water, so it's unlikely that she would ask him of something.

i dont think that what the menoa tree took is saphira's eldunari because it's the "heart of hearts" "its deep in our chest" and wasnt the pain in his lower belly? not to mention that Saphira should have noticed it's absence since she discussed that she has always known of it during the first talk about Eldunari with Glaedr.

Ohh, good point. But if they're connected and Eragon feels what Saphira feels and vice versa, Saphira COULD have felt it, and that might have been where it originated...

And i dont know about you think but Saphira is friggin tough i doubt that what she compares pain as and Eragon compares pain as are totally different.

But what's to say It couldnt be the link that they share? in eldest it claims that saphira would sometimes hav to "shield" herself from Eragons fits of pain that would come from his back, a twinge is only a feeling, pain and such are feelings as well. I think it could have rebounded over to Eragon without saphira knowing.

CP could have wanted it to remain a mystery..*shrugs* And if the Menoa Tree hates fire, taking away Saphira's ability to reproduce would make it so that no more dragons could be born, thus eliminating the 'fire.'

Dont you think the story of Linnea and her lover is almost the same as with Eragon/Arya ? Arya is old and wise and gets "beguiled" from Eragon (even a human-man).
Furthermore the rave cryes twice "Fate" when Eragon and Arya are talking close by the tree. (Bloodghem and when she explains the story of the Menoa Tree)

-> the Menoa Tree took his love for Arya?

Would be kinda crucial to do, since it would doom their complete relationship. And I dont recall Eragon having a boner from seeing Arya on the battlefield of Feinster. He did not even mention one of her attributes he loves so much. Not even after hugging her for like 5 minutes..

Another more satisfying approch could be that the tree realized his passion towards Arya and thus "links" her fate with theirs in order to loose her grief.However thats possible ;P

But i think its reasonable that it goes more into Eragon/Arya relationship.

I have a weird theory, but I can't shake it.

What if the Menoa Tree (Linnea) didn't want to be a tree anymore? What if she wanted to live life outside again? Maybe because Eragon told her of Galbatorix and the dangers that he presents to the forest, maybe she would want to help protect it by gaining a body again. Of course though, you can't make a body from scratch. So, I wonder if that pain in Eragon's stomach was her taking some of his flesh. An organ or something to base her new body off of.

Not necessarily. Remember there are spells that remove pain, and the twinge was probably the vacant area where the organ was filling in after it was removed. It would feel strange at the least, but Linnea sure does have the power to do so, and also to instantly heal everything damaged from the removal.

Then, I don't know how, but she would then have to grow the body from that single piece of flesh, then transfer her mind somehow into it. Maybe she could sing herself back out of the Tree as she did going in?

There's nothing to go against his theory and Linnea doesnt have to mutter any of the AL to get what she wants, and actually your soft tissue such as your brain and other such organs have hardly any nerves to the point where you wouldnt feel anything at all, not to mention that she could take a piece of liver since you only need about half of your live (or kidney) to live.

If the tree does grow out of his flesh, she would be an elve/human mix. Why would she be interested in becoming a half human? She could ask every elve for some flesh and become a real one herself.
I think she is a too proud person to become a half human after all.(she is an elve after all)

Not necessarily, I doubt anybody has ever contacted her in the manner Eragon has. and why would she mind being half human half elf? the dragons changed Eragon, Oromis said that their gift was worth more than all the gold in Alagaesia. Besides up untill that point all she concerned herself with was the "sun and rain". It was Eragon who offended her if another elf did maybe she would take something "in return" from them as well.

You can never know. Like I said before, there are spells that mask pain and feeling, and she was probably so quick in taking the piece of Eragon that Saphira or anyone else would hardly notice it.
