I thought that he was just hit by an arrow somewhere where I couldn't see, but he was far out of range of any archers from what it appeared. Now that you have explained to me this magic, his strange death now seems explainable. Nesa nodded in answer.
However, Valora's mentioning of the Elves' power nearly stopped her cold in the air, Wait, you mean to say that these Elves are unrivaled in magic, and we are going to their land just so easily? Nesa asked with a twinge of fear striking through her mind, At first I thought I could hold myself, but now I'm becoming doubtful that it will be safe for me there. Would they hold more respect towards a Fanghur than a man? They know how rare your race is, and would never strike a Fanghur down, unless they had no choice, Valora said quickly, trying to reassure her friend. And I don't know about unrivaled. None can match a dragon when we set our minds to working magic, whether individually or our race as a whole, she added. In other, being as you're with me, you have nothing to worry about.
From what you say, it sounds like your friend may have indeed been struck down by magic. Dwarves are notoriously intolerable creatures, they probably would have attacked your band of Fanghur eventually, even without provocation. Re: Sightseeing Valora's attempt to comfort Nesa had little effect on her, as while even though she might not be attacked, just being in the presence of such power was a terrifying thought. But at the same time, to find that Valora was also in possession of the ability to use magic brought some comfort, and even some respect for her friend.
Alright, if you say so. . . Nesa agreed, glancing at the position of the sun to measure how much more time they had to fly. Only a couple hours of daylight remained, but still in the distance Nesa could see a brief glimpse of the ocean again to her left. She swore she had been flying due West the entire time, so she assumed that this was an area where the coastline was sloping more northward. Re: Sightseeing I do say so, we'll be fine, Valora said back. Something glittering in the corner of her eye caught the ruby dragoness' attention and she glanced over. When she saw it was the ocean, she altered her flight path a little so that she was heading north. We can stop there for tonight, but Du Weldenvarden is to the north, we'll probably leave it behind tomorrow, Valora said, replying to Nesa's thoughts. The red looked up at the sky and gauged how much time they had left before sundown and was pleased to see they had a couple of hours of travel time left.

Re: Sightseeing Nesa shifted her wings as they passed a slight gust of turbulence. I knew that, but I don't want to cut through the center of the Empire when there still is a massive war going on. I feel that it would be safer to stay close to the mountains-The Spine is it called?-So we are in less danger. If I want to see this forest, I want to be in one piece. The range lies on the western border of the Empire, so we'll stay by the ocean for a while before we head northwest, if that's okay with you.
The sun dipped lower towards the horizon, tinting the one vivid blue sky in tints of orange and violet, darkening the green landscape to a sullen grey. The ocean shore met with them soon enough, and Nesa gradually lowered her altitude until she gently landed on a soft patch of grass. Unlike the smooth beach front that she saw earlier, this entire shore for miles was lined with limestone cliffs at least a hundred feet high, smoothly sloping into the crashing waves below. Still, if it would make you feel safer, it's okay by me, Valora said, pulling her wings in slightly to cut through the gust of wind. The ruby dragoness looked at the ground below, curious about the state of affairs in Alagaesia. The talk of attacks by frightened soldiers had started her wondering how the war was progressing since last she had talked to anyone involved in it.
Be back in a few minutes, she said to Nesa, then peeled away from the Fanghur. The bright red of the setting sun lit up Valora's scales like a torch to oil-soaked wood, making the dragoness shine like a blood-bathed coal. Lora wrinkled her nose at the all-too visible display and arrowed up into the sky, darting into the cover of a cloud. She circled aimlessly in the moist air for a few minutes, then dove back down when it seemed the sun had sank far enough behind the horizon. She could see Nesa far below, resting on a particularly scenic patch of beach next to some limestone cliffs. She circled one more time over her friend so the Fanghur would see her, then arced off to the east, heading deeper into the Empire. She flew for an hour or more, constantly scouring the earth below for signs of armies or battles. Aside from a few burnt out huts comprising tiny villages and a small contingent of imperial soldiers leading a miserable line of chain-bound conscripts, she saw nothing. After following the soldiers for a time, trying to decide whether or not to free the prisoners, she turned back to the west. By the time she reached the stretch of coast where Nesa was, the moon had risen and was bathing the world in a silver light. I was curious about how the war was coming along in this part of the Empire. I didn't see much though. I'm not sure what to make of what I did see, she said to Nesa, landing neatly a few hundred feet away from the Fanghur.
