Violeta, the Lightning Dragon

Race: Dragon (Lightning Dragon, to be exact)

Skills:
1. Lightning Breath- Violeta has the ability to shoot a blast of electricity similar to a lightning bolt from her mouth. This is a trait unique to her particular species of dragon. The blast can be used to stun/kill enemies or assist in hunting. One downside is that the lightning is only useful at medium range or open areas because at long ranges the lightning tends to automatically arc towards the nearest tall object. Violeta has the ability to control the strength of the attack so that it will only stun rather than kill. Like when a regular dragon's fire breath, Violeta’s lightning breath can be produced as a steady stream of as a quick short burst. When used as a steady stream, she can only maintain it for a few seconds because it will quickly drain her energy. Her standard quick burst attack can use a small or large ammount of energy depending on the strength of the attack.

2. Shock defence- The ability to selectively energize any part of her body at will, similar to an electric eel. This is another trait unique to lightning dragons. Violeta can energize any of her legs, her tail, or her entire body to prevent someone from touching her. The strength of the discharge can range a simple tingling effect to a shock powerful enough to kill or severely injure an urgal. Though this ability is primarily for defense, Violeta can use it as an attack by luring an enemy to a wet or damp area and touching the ground with an energized limb, thus delivering a shock to anyone standing in the water. Her fur will stand on end when she uses this ability. This ability only consumes a small ammount of energy and Violeta can use it as often as she wants.

3. Lightning Bombs- This ability is a variant of lightning breath. Like all lightning Dragons, Violeta lacks the ability to breathe fire. However during her time with Natagath she learned to modify her lightning breath to unleash a ball of extremely hot electricity which will not only explode on impact but will also release a burst of energy that will stun anyone standing in the blast zone. This attack takes the form of individual balls of electricity rather than a continuous stream like the lightning breath. It is hot enough to melt through steel or instantly set fire to a flammable object, similar to an arc blast. This ability always takes a large amount of energy to produce and it takes several seconds for Violeta to produce it again.

4. Combat- Violeta is very swift and agile in flight. She can turn on a dime and her small size makes it easier for her to evade enemies. When escape is not an option she will unleash her array of weapons. Her fangs and talons serve as her melee weapons and Violeta can deliver a nasty bite. Her saliva is poisonous and caustic like seithr oil. Her talons can cut down most humans with a single swipe and cause heavy damage to anything else. These abilities, combined with Violeta’s dragon training and lightning abilities make up for her physical shortcomings.

5. Healing Touch. Most of Violeta's abilities are used to take life away, but Violeta has the ability give life back as well. She can heal injured people, whether they are other dragons, human, dwarf, or elf. On her own she can heal many physical injuries but if she has a strong magic user with her, together they can combine their power to cure a mental illness, restore a person's sanity. The later is very difficult and if not done properly, can result in the victim becoming a mindless shell. However, this takes an extremely large amount of magic and often leaves both Violeta and the magician very weak afterward. This ability does not work with poison or physical illnesses.

Hair: She has a layer of violet fur with a stripe of white fur running down her back. The fur on her underside is white also.

Eyes: Violet, same as her scales and fur.

Home Village: The same little village where Natagath lived. It no longer exists because of the war.

Parents: Unknown. They’re dead and Violeta never knew either of them.

Siblings: None.

Personality: Violeta can be your best friend or your worst nightmare. Though she is usually gentle and friendly, she can also be a fierce and fiery spirit if provoked. During her early days Violeta was wreckless and arrogant. She would often try to be a hero and impress Natagath with her abilities. This changed with time though. Violeta is bold and daring and fights for what she believes is right. Despite being only a medium sized dragon, she is not to be underestimated. She is wise and highly intelligent and relies just as much on brains as brawn. If physical strength isn’t enough to beat you then she’ll probably try to outsmart you. She is lively and energetic and loves going on adventures. Though Violeta seems independent, she actually craves the company of a companion. For the most part, she has lived alone since the fall of the riders and her separation from Natagath. She misses Natagath dearly and believes that he is most likely dead. Violeta still has Natagath’s saddle and rider sword and they are her most valued possessions. Whenever she travels, Violeta takes them with her and hides them in a safe place. She clings to the hope that her rider is still alive (and he actually is) but she has mostly given up hope of ever seeing him again. She gets upset whenever people ask her about her rider and occasionally cries when thinking of the old days with him. Violeta has made some friends during her adventures but she has never had a traveling companion. Violeta is usually kind to others and her fiery spirit mainly shows when she is fighting an enemy or defending a friend. She is wary of strangers at first but if she feels that they are no threat then it is not hard to gain Violeta’s trust. However, if someone betrays her trust, she’ll most likely never trust them again. She can be nosy sometimes and is always willing to offer someone advice even if they don’t want it. Violeta enjoys a good challenge and will often stand and fight rather than run away. She detests tyrants and injustice and does whatever she can to end it when she encounters is.

Character History: It was a fluke that Violeta’s egg ever came to be in the possession of the Dragon Riders. Her mother was killed by poachers and her fellow eggs broken. An unknown Dragon Rider arrived too late to save her mother and siblings but he managed to rescue Violeta’s egg. With no one to care for the hatchling inside the surviving egg, the Rider decided to take it back to Vroengard. After many years of being passed around, the egg finally hatched for a young elf named Natagath, who named the hatchling Violeta because her beautiful violet scales and fur reminded him of violets, his favorite flower. Violeta was a rare breed of dragon, known as a lightning dragon. She was the only lightning dragon ever to be a part of the Dragon Riders. In time she learned to control her powers and Violeta and Natagath shared many adventures together. Violeta grew very close to her rider and enjoyed nothing more than flying through the clouds with him. During her training, she and Natagath were sent on a mission alone to study the ancient trees deep within Du Weldenvarden. During that mission they discovered a band of slave traders using the forest as a base camp. Natagath wanted to call for assistance before confronting the slavers but Violeta had other ideas. She wanted to play hero and save the day. Without thinking, the dragoness leaped from the cover of the trees and greeted the slavers with a mighty roar. Unfortunately the slavers were working alongside a few ra’zac and she quickly found herself outnumbered. Believing that the dragon was alone, the slavers attacked with everything they had. Violeta managed to kill three ra’zac with her lightning breath, and she disabled two of the slavers, but another one threw a net over her. That was when Natagath stepped in and finished off the slavers with his sword and magic. He was angry at Violeta for botching the mission and for her foolishness but after a stern talking-to, the dragoness promised to follow her rider’s orders from then on.

As time passed, Violeta became more mature and her combat skills improved. It wasn’t until after Violeta and Natagath completed their rider training that Violeta learned how to use her firebolts, which is a variant of her lightning breath. After much practice, Violeta discovered that if she held her lightning breath in for a couple seconds rather than releasing it, the blast would become a white hot ball of lightning that would instantly set whatever it hit on fire. Violeta and Natagath took part in the Ra’zac War. During the course of the war, Violeta single handedly killed three lethrblaka and numerous ra’zac. Natagath assisted her in bringing down several more together. However, one day a ra’zac used an atlatl to hurdle a spear at Violeta as she and Natagath were fighting a lethrblaka and the spear lodged itself in her stomach. Violeta was severely wounded and even though Natagath was able to heal the wound, she was so weak from blood loss that it took a month for her to fully recover and she spend the rest of the war recovering. Natagath continued to fight, riding along with other riders and dragons because Violeta was not capable of fighting. Eventually the war came to an end and Violeta was reunited with her rider. Unfortunately the period of peace would not last for long and Violeta’s life was about to change forever. A short time after the Ra’zac War, Galbatorix began his genocide against the Dragon Riders. During the Forsworn’s attack on Doru Araeda, Violeta took to the skies with Natagath in defense of their city. During the battle, one of the Forsworn knocked Natagath from Violeta’s back and her rider broke his legs upon hitting the ground. Unable to get up and fight, Natagath ordered Violeta to flee. She initially refused to abandon her rider but she was unable to reach him. Natagath begged her to flee, pointing out that there was no point in her dying for him since he had no way of escaping, and then severed the bond between them. Violeta was forced to fly away, leaving Natagath to his fate. It was the last time she saw him. She managed to escape from Vroengard, heartbroken over the loss of her rider.

The dragoness fled to the far north, into the arctic. Violeta found a cave in the side of a cliff. This would be her home for several years. The harsh environment did nothing to ease Violeta’s feelings. While the extreme cold didn’t bother her too much, there was very little food and it was dark several months of the year. On top of that, the locals, having never seen dragons before, were hostile towards her. After several skirmishes with the natives, Violeta finally decided to return to the south. She first traveled to Danthuania, the homeland of the lightning dragons. She discovered that this land offered no safe haven, however, and that dragons were no longer welcome there. Just like in Alagaesia, the Danthuanians had hunted lightning dragons almost to extinction. Violeta took command of a small band of dragons and led a resistance against the country's government, which was ruled by an evil sorceress called Lethira. Joining sides with a human resistance movement, Violeta helped overthrow the tyrant government and personally killed Lethira after a great battle. With the lightning dragons now safe and Danthuania liberated, Violeta went on several other adventures before returning to Alagaesia.

She returned to Alagaesia, finding a hidden cave in The Spine that she decided to use as a safehouse. She disgourged her eldunari and hid it in a separate cave for safe keeping. Despite trying to keep a low profile, Violeta has had several run-ins with Galbatorix’s cronies. She is unaware of the real reason they chase her. (Galbatorix wants to catch her so he can force Natagath to kill her) Now she is just trying to stay alive.

History Update: Violeta was eventually reunited with Natagath with the help of another rider and dragon. Shortly afterward they fled to Danthuania together and currently live in a monastery there along with Fletcher, Sevena, and Mirriana.

Weakness / Fear: Violeta fears Galbatorix and Shruiken more than anything else. She fears that one day Galbatorix's goons will catch her off guard. As for weaknesses, she lacks the brute physical strength and large build of a standard dragon. That's not to say she is weak, she's just not as strong as a standard dragon.

Animal Companions: None

Character's Physical Description: Violeta is about fourty feet long with a wingspan of sixty feet, which is as big as she’ll ever get. She is not as stocky or muscular as a standard dragon. Lightning dragons reach their full size by the age of twenty. Violeta’s scales are violet, as her name implies. (They're the same color as this text.) She has a white stripe running from the back of her neck to halfway down her tail and a white diamond mark on her forehead. Her underside is white, just like the stripe on her back. Violeta also has a thin layer of fur that covers her body, which is the same color as her scales. When she energizes a part of her body, the hairs stand on end. There is a pair of short curved horns on the back of her head though they are just for show, not fighting. Violeta’s eyes are the same color as her violet scales. She bears a few scars from her various adventures, including the one on her stomach where the Ra'zac's spear hit her, but most of these are covered by her fur and not noticable. Her lightning and firebolts are the same color as her scales, violet with a bit of white. Her teeth, horns, talons, and spikes are white just like on a regular dragon.

Dreams for the Future: To see the end of Galbatorix and the Empire. To find a new rider/traveling companion. She also hopes to find a mate someday, even if is just a regular dragon and not a lightning dragon.

Reason for Dreams: She hates them and is tired of having to run from them constantly. She is lonely and wants someone to keep her company. She also wants someone to take under her wing.

Alignment/side: She’s independent. She definitely doesn’t serve the Empire though.

Here is a little bit of information about lightning dragons. They reach full size by the age of twenty and then stop growing, unlike regular dragons which are constantly growing their whole lives. They are smaller and lack the immense strength of their fire-breathing cousins. Lightning dragons can’t breathe fire. Instead they have lightning breath and electric skin that works the same way as an electric eel. Their saliva is poisonous and caustic, similar to seithr oil. They are immune to most poisons. Lightning dragons are not native to Alagaesia. They migrated from a neighboring land called Danthuania. They were always rare in Alagaesia because of poaching and competition with regular dragons. They were hunted almost to extinction even before the rise of Galbatorix because it was believed that their blood could cure diseases, which is not true. Their eldunari were also believed to hold more energy than those of regular dragons, which is also not true. Nevertheless, Galbatorix believed it to be true and ruthlessly hunted them down until only a few remained. Violeta survived because she was hiding in the arctic at the time. Now she is one of last of her kind still living in Alagaesia, though lightning dragons still exist in their original homeland. The Dragon Riders never used lightning dragons because of their weaker strength and small size and to date, Violeta is the only lightning dragon ever to have been one of the them, and her egg being inducted into the order was unintentional.
