I wrote this for an English assignment about a book named Night for those of you who have read it.




Lurking Death

Death had hunted me
Starvation clawed at my body
They chased me, slowly gaining, as I fell back toward their grasp
Every stumble in my footstep was two less steps between them and me
They couldn’t seize me outright, but they could slowly infect
Slow me down, till they could wrap their cold fingers of death around me.

My family they chased also
My father, mother, sisters, all of them finally caught
My mother and sisters were taken, shortly after Death first appeared
My father and I stuck together, survived as a team, cheating Death every day
But He advanced faster upon my father than I
I, out of fear and hate, let Him slink up.

We turned our backs to salvation in an attempt to cheat Death once more
But Death had not been fooled
He waited for us around every corner, in all shadows, lashing out at all around
Gradually cracking and shattering our will to outrun him.

In the dark of night Death finally sunk his teeth into my last hope and will to survive
He stole my father from me, took him to his fiery grave
My life was shattered
Nothing mattered any more
I was alone; alone with Death.
He came closer and closer, and when He finally seemed to lift, to stop hunting
He struck - hard and fast, in the simplest, unnoticeable form
He nearly dragged me in, giving me a chance to meet my family again
But I knew they’d want me to live on, to tell my story to a blind world
And I did
I rose up and crushed Death, drove Him back till when I choose to let Him
Encompass me and bring me to my waiting family.
