One Cold Night
Ice is one of the elements, and it was the first thing i had ever felt. Ice cold air, with my breath freezing into white clouds, and ice cold fear, seeping into my bones, crawling into my heart and squeezing the warmth out of it.
**There were no stars out tonight.**
No point of light, not even the moon. Just the dark and the ice-and fear. A cloud had fallen over my part of the world.
Snow was starting to fall, and I was left out in it, clutching a cold piece of metal in my left hand. It was the key, the only thing I found when I woke up on a night just like this. Of course, I'd been living on the streets since then, so I didn't know much about anything. My memory was as blank as, well, a sheet of white paper.
**Noises. Strange noises.**
I huddled deeper into the shadows. Most likely it was one of those people who called me street trash. They didn't like me, I stayed out of their way. But their words made me think. was my life really worth anything? There were times when I really felt like trash, thrown out into the streets of an unknown city.
The cold was deeper now, biting into my bones. I shivered, drawing my thin jacket around me. I t didn't really help. Those noises came again. Sometihing like shattering glass...and gunfire? That did not sound good. And it was coming this way.
I forced my numb feet to move and slowly stood up, peering in the direction of the noise. All I could see in the dim light was shadowy figures. and cars, cars with the flashing lights that meant the police or somethg. I couldn't tell.
But they were coming this way fast. and after a little while, I could see a person running-the man the police were chasing. He was young and had a strange, wild look on his face. That kind of gave me a bad feeling.
I stood stock still against the wall, hoping he wouldn't notice me. The man looked behind him, then all around, then behind him again. He ran off, then vanished. I looked around, my breath freezing into clouds. Where was he? Where did he go? Is he gone?
There was a screeching of tires as the police cars with flashing lights pulled up. Obviously, they were searching for him too. I took a couple of tentative steps out into the snow.
"Drop your gun and step ou where we can see you with your hands in the air." A voice blared through the loudspeaker. (I think thats what they said.)Did they mean me, or the guy behind me? Some more police guys came out of the cars and they. had. guns. too! I resisted the urge to run out in front of them saying, "Don't shoot!"
The voice repeated the statement, and before I know what happened, the guy behind me put an arm around my neck and pointed the gun at my head.
"You shoot and she dies." the man said. I was too scared to move, staring into the bright lights at the police. They were exactly where they were, with the guns pointing at the man. Why didn't they shoot? Couln't they see I was street trash?
I don't know why they didn't shoot.
The silence lengthened, and each passing second stretched into a minute. I could almost smell the tension in the air. The man holding me grinned-he knew the police wouln't shoot. I was yelling at them in my head. "Just shoot! I'm nobody you want to save! Just do it!"
But they didn't.
The man started stepping backward, dragging me along with him. But I wasn't going that easily. I struggled a bit, digging in my heels in.
**Time stopped.**
I ducked from his grip, grabbed the gun, and pointed it at him. I fired.
The man eyes widened, and I swear the people on the other side of the world could hear that shot. The man stood frozen for a second, then slowly, gracefully, began to fall down. It was like watching someone fly through the air, only to hit a brick wall.
The body fell to the ground.
**Time started.**
The world was now a confusion of action and noise. I was focused on the nameless man, the nam betrayed by his own gun, and the weapon in my hand. Why did I do it? Why did I have to go kill him? Did he even deserve it?
His eyes were staring at the sky. Yes, he probably deserved what he got. But I didn't like the feeling of seeing the life leave someones eyes. All I had to think was "that could've been me." Par t of me felt safe-part of me felt fear. But I didn't care. Someone had found me and I might have a life.
The rest all passed in a blur.
No, didn't have family and no, I didn't remember them. I didin't know how I 'd ended up on the streets. No, I couldn't remember anything.
I killed the man in self-defense. Nothing would come of it. I told them everything I knew, even about the key. They didn't know what to make of it either.
They did find a nice family who adopted me. I had a life at last.
But I told no one about my gossamer wings. * * *
