Post Rigel
Yep, this is my evil, slightly insane phoenix character. He really doesn't seem to like Phalynx. lol

Name: Rigel

Age: 400 years since regeneration

Gender: male

Skills: Magic: Rigel has found ways to use magical abilities in addition to his natural abilities. He has learned most of his magic from Kumaraq, an evil dragon. He learned from him mostly to try to find a way to steal powers of dragons. He can use normal spells, and some require no utterance of words and little energy loss because of his powers.
Fire: Rigel’s fire is not as strong as others of his kind, and is in fact cold. His fire was tainted when he stole the starry power on the night his kind were used to transfer it from its source to the silver dragon egg. His fire is cold enough to chill an enemy, and strike fear into the hearts of those weaker than himself.
Natural Traits: Like other phoenixes, Rigel is immune to the effects of fire, and does not need to breathe. He can now use all forms of light to regenerate his energy, which is why he prefers twilight and bright nights to do his work. He must regenerate his body every thousand years, and if given enough time to prepare can come back to life after he is killed.
Stolen Power: Rigel stole the power his kind were temporarily bestowed with to transfer to the egg of the silver dragon. The power itself faded, but gave Rigel several traits and abilities; it altered him. His fire is now cold, and he can create light. He is immune to all forms of radiation, instead of just heat radiation. He can also use some magical abilities.
Memory: Rigel’s memory is much more proficient than most phoenixes, which is what has kept his hatred strong over the years. He remembers many past events that he has been involved in, and he has remembered nearly everything he has ever learned.

Race: Phoenix

Hair: none

Eyes: cold yellow

Home Village: none

Parents: unknown

Siblings: none

Character Personality: Rigel is, above all other things, cold and calculating. He is always intelligent in concocting his plans, and always thinks before acting. Because of his infinite lifespan and uncommonly good post-regeneration memory, he can afford to be patient. Rigel is extremely patient, and is content to wait years, decades, even centuries for his plans to come to fruition. He will calmly begin instigating his plots, and will see them through to the finish. He is determined to see his goals completed. He has a deep hatred for dragonkind, believing them the enemies of phoenixes. This hatred is the basis of his loathing for one in particular: the starry one. He believes that it is not right for her to hold powers given by phoenixes. He also believes that because of all dragons’ desire to dominate, she will eventually turn evil and try to rule the world. He knows her mission is to protect it, but he also knows that she will most likely view the easiest way to protect the world as controlling it herself. He wants to stop her before this can happen. Rigel’s only true goal for now is to kill her, and he will be content to die if he can fulfill that one. Rigel is manipulative of others and only cares for himself, believing that dragons are evil, other phoenixes are traitors, and no other species is worthy of his respect or friendship. He is very good at hiding his intentions, though, and is very deceitful. He could be lying at any time without anyone’s knowledge. He is incapable of having friends, though he does occasionally seek allies. He does have a tendency to ruin his own plans when they are just about to be fulfilled, for at that time, and only that time, he becomes impatient and overeager to see them completed. That was how he lost Solarae as an ally, and he also knows that he acted too soon on the Night of the Bestowing.

Character History: His early life is shrouded in mystery, but Rigel knows that he is very old, and has seen much. Most of his earliest lives are a blur of discovering his powers and fighting dragons. Dragons sometimes served the role of a natural enemy to phoenixes, even though they worked together on occasion. The powerful reptiles, however, believed in their dominion over the skies and the land beneath them, and so expanded their territory and claims ruthlessly. Rigel remembers several battles that took place over territory, some instigated by phoenixes, but most by dragons. Rigel was always one of the phoenixes with a deep hatred towards the scaly creatures, viewing them as primitive and violent. He always took a firm position against dragonkind whenever it came into question, even when the majority of his species joined with dragons for some mission or another.

It became unacceptable in his eyes to help or ally with dragons. He shunned any of his own kind that he remembered siding with dragons at one point. One day, the leaders of the phoenixes were spoken to by one such hateful beast. His name was Zephorion, and he requested the aide of the phoenixes. Apparently, the first of the dragons, known only as the Great Dragon at the time, wanted a dragon to be gifted with the powers of the stars in order to protect the land. Rigel resisted this furiously, but in the end the rest of his kind turned against him and betrayed their own race. Because of their already close affiliation with stars, they were to be used as the vessels to transport the power to the dragon’s egg. Their own powers would be temporarily increased and enhanced a hundred-fold, and then they would give it all up to a dragon. Rigel, of course, was furious that they’d even think to give away their rightly earned powers to one of their enemies. He viewed it as betrayal of the worst kind.

However, Rigel was too clever to voice his opinions in a violent or dissenting manner. He gave his opinion in a calm and reasonable way, but was refused nevertheless. So, he decided to comply with the phoenix leaders’ wishes. He, along with dozens of other members of his kind, joined together on the Night of the Bestowing in a starlit valley in the far northeastern mountains. The power of the stars was transferred into them while dragons Zephorion and Faefnir, the egg’s older brother, watched. The phoenixes’ power rose until it was about to burst, and then finally huge beams and crackling currents of silvery energy radiated from the phoenixes into the silver egg before them. Rigel, however, did not give up his power. The energy levels within him were nearly enough to kill him, but still he held on to the immense power. When the others were finished, most of them were drained of strength, so Rigel set his plan into motion.

He swooped in to destroy the agent of his enemy’s triumph, and tried to attack the silver egg. The other phoenixes held him off, though they fell one by one before his immense power. The two dragons came to the egg’s rescue, and the golden one fled to its hiding place while the indigo Zephorion stayed to help the phoenixes hold off Rigel. Rigel, however, was not interested in their deaths yet. First he had to destroy the egg. He flew after Faefnir, chasing him south through the mountains. Zephorion was the only one with enough strength to follow, as the other phoenixes were too weak. Rigel’s power, however, was enough that he was able to blast the blind dragon out of the skies, hopefully to his death.

He continued to chase after Faefnir, desperate to capture and destroy the egg of Phalynx. However, the golden dragon’s magic proved too much. As the temporary star power was wearing off, Faefnir used a spell against Rigel and sent him to the ground, knocked unconscious. And so, the egg of his enemy was lost to him.

Rigel awoke the next morning, weak and exhausted. His feathers were darkened, and charred nearly black. His fire, he discovered, was now much weaker. However, he could sense the awakening of new powers within him with the deaths of the old. Rigel needed to learn how to use these new powers, but first, he had to regenerate and regain his strength. Rigel flew east, across the plains and to the edge of the Burning Sun Sea. He flew along its shores until he reached the boundary area of the Scorched Lands. He then flew into this burnt, dead place. The landscape was filled with lava, volcanic ash, black stone, and the flat-topped peaks of distant volcanoes. He found a vast lava field to the north of the greatest volcano, and built his nest upon a small island of rock within it. As his body burned away in red flames, he swore vengeance upon dragons, and all phoenixes involved with that night. He swore to hinder Faefnir and Zephorion in all ways he could, even if he was not strong enough to kill them. But most of all, he swore to hunt down and kill the starry one, the usurper of the phoenixes’ powers and their false wielder. She would die.

When he was reborn, Rigel was surprised to not only remember his vow, which he had made sure he wouldn’t forget, but all of the events leading up to it as well. His appearance was altered as well. His feathers were now deep scarlet ending in purple and then black. The feathers of his crest, wings, and tail were also tipped in deep blue. His flame, he discovered, was now blue-white and cold. Rigel knew that in order to defeat the starry one, he would need to practice whatever new abilities he had gained.

He decided to pay a visit to an evil sorcerer dragon, Kumaraq. That was one dragon with no love towards his own kind, and possibly one who could help him learn how to defeat the silver dragon. He would also be interested in helping Rigel if the phoenix told him of his wish to harm Zephorion. He spoke with the weak and imprisoned form of the once mighty dragon, and through him learned the use of several magic spells, including ways to possibly extract the starry one’s powers. He learned under the tutelage of Kumaraq for two more lifetimes, until he felt his knowledge sufficient. In return for his help, Rigel was made to gather followers for Kumaraq for four thousand years. The evil dragon gave Rigel his power to transform normal dragons into fearsome wraiths.

Rigel was faithful to his word, and spent the next four thousand years of his life turning dragons into Wraiths. Unlike Kumaraq, however, he destroyed the body of the turned dragon. When his time was up, he traveled the Scorched Lands further, seeking new ways of unlocking his powers. After another thousand years of traveling the burning region, he began his quest.

For tens of thousands of years, he searched for the egg of the silver dragon, but he never once even came close. No living being knew of any silver egg hidden somewhere, and Rigel realized that he had waited too long. He should have began his hunt as soon as he regenerated. The egg could have hatched, and now there was the possibility of the dragoness roaming the lands, already beginning her supposed mission and threatening the survival of the world. Rigel knew that such powers could not go uncorrupted; the dragon would eventually, like all of her kind, decide that she needed more power and control. Rigel finally gave up his search, and instead began to hunt down the phoenixes involved with the Night of the Bestowing. He found each of the phoenix leaders who had instigated the betrayal, and killed them himself. He managed to kill several other phoenixes before he found another way to help him find the silver dragon. He got word of the deeds done by a powerful golden dragon to the south, in the Beor Mountains. As soon as he learned that he was the very dragon who had thwarted him of his chance to destroy the egg, Faefnir, Rigel realized that this dragon could be the key to finding his prey.

Knowing that his powers were no match for the great golden dragon, he went back east to visit the evil Kumaraq. He requested another few hundred year’s use of his power, claiming that he had not done enough to repay Kumaraq. He was secretly plotting to use the power against Faefnir; once his wraith was under his control, he would be able to get all the information needed to find the starry one, and then he could destroy the wraith. However, his plans failed when Kumaraq decided to use him instead. His minions captured Rigel, and held him in a cell under the volcanic fortress of the sorcerer. Rigel was held there for another two thousand years, awaiting his chance to escape. It came in an unlikely source: a young dragoness by the name of Solarae was put into a nearby cell. However, by some means she was able to keep herself from becoming a wraith, and was held in the cell for close to one hundred years. During that time, Rigel befriended her, knowing that his only chance at escape might lay with the small dragon. It did. During her imprisonment, Solarae discovered a new power of her own, and used it to blast their way out of the cell and into the red skies above.

Rigel, being Solarae’s supposed friend, followed her into freedom and escape. He was originally planning to kill the young dragoness, but unfortunately this plan failed too. When he attacked her, he found her fighting skills more advanced than he imagined. Because of his imprisonment for so long, he had forgotten much of his own prowess at fighting, and was defeated in battle. Rigel was forced to regenerate while the hurt and confused Solarae escaped and was lost to him.

Knowing that any possible means of locating the silver egg were now hopeless, Rigel decided to go back to his old ways of harming dragons in general. He found a young elf by the name of Tiacarion, and trained him to hate dragonkind. He located and stole from the phoenixes’ ancient vaults a vial of a specific virus deadly to dragons: Miragones. It had been kept as a last-resort weapon against dragons, but had long been forgotten by its keepers. Rigel was able to steal it and kill three phoenixes with his powers, and gave it to Tiacarion to use when he saw fit.

He sought other ways of indirectly harming the starry one as well. He located a lost dragon egg on an island, strangely attracting a huge amount of dark magic. Rigel decided to direct that dark magic to a purpose, so he manipulated the already-present curse. The curse dictated that this dragon and the silver would be destined to be mortal enemies. He knew that because of the self-righteous nature of dragons, this one would view the darkness within her as an evil thing to be banished. She would try to break the curse. Rigel dealt with that in his interference as well, setting a spell about the egg that would allow the curse to be broken in a specific way. Rigel hoped that this would harm, if not kill, the starry one, without his ever needing to interfere.

He then decided to seek out Faefnir once more, in the hopes of getting information from him one way or another. To his dismay, however, it seemed the ancient dragon had gone into a trance to escape a purge of their kind by an evil tyrant named Galbatorix who had recently taken control of the lands of Alagaesia.

Rigel knew this would hinder his plans, so he decided to try to find Zephorion. While searching in the east, he was found and captured by Kumaraq’s minions, and realized that the evil dragon was at last making his long-awaited move against the rest of dragonkind. Rigel was held in a cell once more, this time with no means of escape. He was held for close to three decades before a new batch of draconic prisoners was brought in. One by one, they were taken to Zephorion, until there was only one left. Rigel attempted to befriend him, but the dragon somehow knew of his evil. Solarae, it seemed, had come into contact with this group.

Rigel sulked in his cell for several more days until he heard a commotion above. He knew without seeing it that Kumaraq had been killed once and for all, and his minions defeated or released. Rigel was trapped. He waited in his cell, hoping for a chance at escape. One day, he heard someone coming into the fortress.

Weapons: Rigel has his own beak and talons as physical weapons, though he views these as crude and unrefined. He much prefers to use his magic, which is magnified in his fire form. His intellect and skills of manipulation are also used as weapons greatly to his advantage.

Likes: being alone, shadows, fire, his powers, defeating dragons in battle

Dislikes: the starry one, her friends, dragons in general, other phoenixes, bright light

Animal Companions: none

Character’s Physical Description: Normal Form: Rigel’s normal form has also been altered by his use of the stolen power and because of his use of magic. His feathers are deep scarlet tinted with purple and then black on the edges. The black turns into blue on the tips of his wing feathers, tail feathers, and the feathers of his crest. He has cold yellow eyes, which seem to pierce the skin and cause uneasiness in his enemies. He is very large for a phoenix, with a fifty-two foot wingspan. He is even larger in his “fire form.”
Fire Form: Rigel’s body turns into eerie blue-white flame. He grows in size and power. He cannot be harmed in this form except by attacks to the heart. The flames in this state are cold, but his magic powers are greatly increased in strength, and his physical strength is also increased because of his size.

Dreams for the Future: His main one is to kill the starry dragoness, for he believes that she will be corrupted. He also wants to see the other phoenixes punished for their betrayal, and dragons punished for their selfish and self-righteous behavior.

Reason for Dreams: The starry one is the base of his hatred. He views it as not right that a dragon should have some of the stolen powers of phoenixes, or that phoenixes should help a dragon in such a way. He thinks the other phoenixes are traitors for giving dragons such power over the world. And dragons, well, he has long viewed them as the natural enemies of the phoenixes, and believes it isn’t right that their species should hold such power.

Alignment/side: his own, which is usually against dragons, and always against the starry dragon
