The Nightmare

I ran as fast as I could. My boots pounded on the earth. Shooting a glance over my shoulder, I jumped over a log. I still didn’t know what was chasing me and I didn’t want to find out. I could feel hot breath on the back of my neck, I could hear the thudding of feet behind me, but when I turned around no one was there. The trees ahead of me thinned out and I saw the black sky clearly.
A crash echoed in my ears. I spun around and saw Aden. He fell into the bushes with a thud and backed toward me. Shadora stepped into view. Aden screamed at her, but I couldn’t make out the words, only a low droning filled my ears. She hissed and pulled out a sword. Aden screamed again and Shadora brought the sword down in one fluid motion.
Another crash. I turned again. Selena was screaming in pain. Her eyes were squeezed shut and she had her head bowed. A colossal black Dragon stood before her. Then a light flashed and a Basilisk took its place. Another flash and Draconis was glaring down at my mother. He pushed a dagger into her wrist, smiling as she shrieked in pain. The he drew it across her throat.
Yet another booming crash. This one was louder than the others. Everything around me came to life with memories. Battles were being fought, life was being given, prayers were being whispered, and people were screaming. I watched everything in horror. I looked straight ahead of me and saw it. Two terrible yellow eyes stared back at me and froze my body in terror. It took a step forward, moving through everything without being hindered. That’s what reminded me that these were memories and nightmares. The Evil that had given it breath.
I felt something brush my arm and felt my body grow warm. I gasped for breath and began to run again. The people around me stopped and stared. Their faces darkened and their eyes turned red. The opened their mouths to scream for help, but no sound came out. I only saw Death. Destruction.
Blood roared in my ears and my gasping breath became another droning sound that pulsed through me. Rocks began to form beneath my feet. More screams. I turned again, my hair flying in a flurry around my face. The two eyes still followed me. I wondered what kind of hideous creature held those eyes.
I could smell it. Foul and disgusting. Like blood, decay, and fire. I choked and my vision blurred for a moment. The wind howled around me, pulling at me. Shouting my name. I felt hands pulling at me. They grabbed my arms, trying to pull me down. I fought the urge to scream and pulled away from the grasping, dead fingers. The trees were behind me now. I ran on a long narrow ridge of rock. The sea crashed all around me, spraying my clothes with salty water.
Then ground shifted and I fell. Scrambling to my feet, I began to race along the ridge once more. Then the ground rose and gave way. I was running on a cliff. The foul hunter still followed, its scent filling my nostrils with its stench. The ground rumbled and cracked beneath me. I fell toward the sea, my hands seeking a hold. I grabbed a branch, looking up. The hunter stood over me. It reached out a long taloned hand. It grabbed my wrist and I fell, plummeting into Darkness.
Voices whispered all around me and I looked straight down. The body of a girl was lying on a frozen sea. All around her were black rose petals. I struggled to see who the girl was...It was me! A shriek tore through my ears and I saw no more.
