I hate the smell of cigarette smoke, but are you sure this is a topic we can talk about?

Second-hand smoking is even worse becuase the smoker is causing the ill health of others. They can die and never touch a cigarette. I don't know what can be done to change it though...

What's sad is that practically everyone knows someone who does this and there is only so much a friend or family member can do.
It is up to the individual in question in the end.

I agree. I also have a couple friends who use illegal substances. Yes, I think that the drugs and smoke will mess a person up in the end, but it is not my place to tell them what to do. For example, one of my friends got in trouble and I told them if you're going to do that stuff, be smart about it. Try not to get in trouble. If I may quote myself, it all comes down to the individual in the end. I know that I will not smoke a cigarette myself as I stated above. Second hand smoking in restaurants bothers me because it can sicken other people. But otherwise, people should do what they wish.

I hope this makes sense.
As I like to say, just my humble opinion. (Or maybe just opinion)

That's true, it IS pointless. But it is their choice. Friends and family can be there for them but it is up to them. They have to not want to do it themselves too.

first i must say this is not a topic i should probably post on because i am totaly biased. (not that i never smoke a cig. before) after seeing (even my patient today) people who smoke for 20years (or what ever) they cant breathe because there lungs can not expand enough to let in enough oxygen because they have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema. these people cant even get up and walk 10 feet to the bathroom with out almost passing out because the cant get oxygen and they are dizzy and weak. it becomes ssssssooooo sad and they will (99%) look at you and say i should have never smoked and dont you do it. im sorry i tried not to get in detail and i dont mean to rant about it i just had to add my piece.

did you know that for every year a person is around smoke (2nd hand) they have to be away from it for 5years before the risk of cancer will go away??? thats all long time for only a year

yes that is very true they some cant even take a shower with out getting horribly out of breath. so i guess you cant breathe you stink like old stale cigs. and you smell like b.o. from not taking a shower to me this is not what i am looking for in life.

no your 100% correct hopefully everyone who had said here that they are not going to smoke wont actually do it some people start because of there friends or because of stress especially in college becuase they have sooo many responsibilities and they think this is a way to deal with stress well maybe what i said will help people understand that there is nnnooo good things about smoking.

sorry that you have to be around that but as soon as u are old enough to move out and get away from all of that smoke then ur chances of getting cancer will slowly start to go down and as long as you dont decide to start to smoke so remember how bad it smells and how bad it is for you!!

me? no my parents quit smoking a while ago and when they did they went outside so that helped out there clothes still smelled though. but i dont live at home any more so now if we have parties here some people smoke cigarettes and some people smoke cigars so every once in a while i am but usually people who come to my house go out side and smoke but my close friends dont smoke which is good. but i do have a few friends that chew and i try and tell them what it is going to do to them but they are in denial and they think that nothin will happen to them hopefully they will learn before it does too much damage that cant be reversed

That is because of the nicotine. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think it comes naturally in tobacco. I think my parents said the companies put it in, but I am not sure. Addiction is hard to break.

And the patch/therapy things don't always work. Relapses happen.

no i dont think that nicotine is natural in the tobacco i think the companies put it in along with alot of other chemicals so people CAN'T stop and they will always smoke. i mean come on do u really think that the CEO of the cig companies smoke i really dont think he is dumb enough to!!

That is the truth. They make the addiction so their product sells. You're right, they probably don't smoke. Same with drug dealers, they rarely use what they are selling.

Actualy smoking itself can't kill you. You won't be killed by cigarette but by lungs cancer or something like that

Either people do not know the consequences, or that they think they will not be affected. Peer pressure, stress relief, it could be anything.

It is something to be proud of, but it comes in many different forms. I think everyone gives in somewhere, whether it is the clothes you wear, your attitude, smoking, etc.

Yeah, that's it exactly. People wear the designer stuff to look cool, I guess.
Young people smoking can sometimes be attributed to that same reason. And others of course.
