It took me about a month to finish it because it was so detailed.
It was pretty good though.

How is this book? Is it any good? I bought a while back when I bought the LOTR trilogy, but never got around to reading it.

It's much slower than LOTR, but it's very good. The Silmarillion is a history book really so that may be a reason you don't want to read it.

It's more than the history of the elves. It talks about the gods, the rise and fall on nations, and the long war fought against the first Dark Lord.

The Silmarillion is one of the books Tolkein wrote to give LOTR series a backbone. There are other books he wrote in order to give the series a framework. He invented a WHOLE WORLD for the setting of his stories. And as said before, they work as History books, that's why they are somewhat "dry reading" but great nevertheless!!!!

HaydenBlower was the one who recommended me to read The Silmarillion and it did help understand the LotR books a lot better. The man was a genius!

Post Re: The Silmarillion
Better than LOTR in my honest opinion. If you actually take the time to read it, it's quite beautiful. It consists of 5 major parts

Ainulindalë- The music of the Ainur and the creation of Ea. The corruption oft the music by Melkor, and the ultimate defeat of Melkor.

Valaquenta- The description of the Valar and the Maiar, two of the dominant forces in the series.
Notable Maiar include-
Saruman
Sauron
Gandalf
Eonwe
Balrogs

Quenta Silmarillion- The history of the Silmarils (Before the First Age - the End of the First age) which were crafted by Feanor, a Noldorin elf. The Silmarils were a source of pure light that were formed when the Two Trees were destroyed by the Ungoliant and Melkor.

(Begin dominance of the Noldor)
Feanor then led the Noldor (The greatest of the Elves) to Middle Earth, beginning the First Age. The First kinslaying was committed when Feanor attempted to take ships from the Teleri by force.

Fingolfin, Feanor's half brother led his host across the ice bridge into Beleriand. Soon, Feanor gets killed, his son passes the throne to Fingolfin.

Fingolfin rules the Noldor and makes an alliance with the men and the Sindar elves while his brother, Turgon, makes the great hidden city of Gondolin. Etc, Fingolfin and his alliance beats the hosts of Morgoth/Melkor and begins the siege of Angband, which was later broken in the Battle of the Sudden Flame. Easterlings betray the alliance of Elves and Men
(End the dominance of the Noldor)

Fingolfin challenges Morgoth/Melkor to combat and deals Morgoth 7 wounds, but he is ultimately killed. Gondolin, Nargothrond, Hithlum, and many other cities are sacked.

Valar come and destroy Morgoth, Beleriand sinks under the ocean.
(End First Age)

Akallabêth- The Rise and Fall of Numenor & Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age- Leading to LOTR
(Begin Dominance of Numenor)
After the fall of Morgoth, the men who had helped the elves were given a land called Numenor. They were prosperous through trade and made several ouposts, including Umbar. Sauron made his appearance and feared Numenor. The Elves were struggling against Sauron so Numenor sent a great host and captured Sauron.

(Begin Dominance of Sauron)
Sauron tricked Ar-Pharazôn into sailing west into Valinor, the land of the immortals which could never be touched by the impure mortals. Valinor were enraged, and destroyed Numenor. (End Dominance of Numenor)

Thus, two kingdoms of exile, Gondor and Arnor were created, along with the other fallen Numenoreans who went against the Elves and Dunedain (People of Numenorean blood) Kingdoms. Slowly, the Numenoreans and other human allies of Sauron were corrupted into the Nazgul. War of the Last Alliance was ended by the destruction of Sauron.
(End of first period of Dominance of Sauron)

Post Re: The Silmarillion
Ahh, you forgot Doriath. Doriath and the Girdle of Melian were established long before Gondolin was built. In terms of building, it went:

Doriath
Gondolin
Nargothrond

In terms of falling it went:

Nargothrond
Doriath
Gondolin

It was after Gondolin was destroyed that the Valar finally decided to intercede and destroy Morgoth. The Silmarils passed into the three different elements: one was sent up into the sky, one was buried deep beneath the Blue Mountains, and the last one was cast into the Great Sea by Feanor's last son.

In the Akllabeth, you forgot to mention that Numenor was sunk and that Sauron wasn't just being held by Ar-Pharazon, not only corrupted Ar-Pharazon, but basically became the last king of Numenor. He told the Numenoreans to destroy their temples to the Valar and replace them with temples dedicated to him. And he destroyed the White Tree. Now, the Numenoreans in exile, who established Gondor and Arnor, were not against the Valar. Elendil and Isildur and the others were exiled by Sauron because they saw through his lies and malice. It was the people who were disloyal to the Valar, the ones Sauron corrupted, that were destroyed in the Sinking. Just a few corrections I had voice.

Also, the Quenta Silmarilleon doesn't just tell the story of the Silmarils. There are also some great love stories in it as well that were somehow affected by Morgoth and the Silmarils.

But the fall of Gondolin was the most epic of all the cities that were pillaged so I had to put it.

That is giving away too many plot details. I just wanted to give them a general idea, but I did mess up the part about the kingdoms in exile.

Yeah, the sack of Nargothrond was rather unspectacular. I mean, what's so special about a dragon coming in? I mean, come on!
