hmm....
hmm well it would depend on the elf but about the way Arya was caught i'd have to say she was
trapped in her duty to save the egg and she probably didn't have time to "runaway"

Arya was only caught because she used all her strength to translocate Saphira's egg to the Spine, i m sure if she had fought Durza they would av been easily matched or i think she mite have won.... well i thoink she would definatly have won

I think a shade would win. Think about it only 3 people have slayed a shade, and their victory was most likely luck. I'm not saying that Eragon is weak but it was mainly by luck that he killed Durza. Now I know that at that point in the story, Eragon was little compared to an elf, and his present form but he was nothing compared to a shade.

I think an elf would win. They know there surroundings like the palm of their hand, and that can be a really good help in a fight like this...

elves would definatly win... it doesnt say how many shades have ever been in existance so 4 all we kno only 3 av... n those 3 have all been defeated... elves dnt go looking 4 shades and i dnt think shades go looking 4 elves... they r to easily matched... however i definatly think elves would win.... they jus would... good always defeats evil... kinda ..... sometimes....

Elf would totally quick butt. I just don't know why Arya couldn't fight that one shade dude. She would've been powerful enough it would seem.

she was powerful enough but she wanted to get the egg away from him so as not to give it to Galby, she spent all here energy translocating it... jus think how much energy it would take to transport it from Du Weldenvarden to the Spine??/ she's very very strong.... i dnt even think Eragon would be able to do it.... afta he turned elf... ish

Yea she only got caught bcos she didnt kno about the Shade.... n the power it took to translocate the egg ova the distance required was enormous.... she didnt stand a chance of fighting Durza off but i bet if she hadnt of had to do tht n she didnt have the egg she would av put up a verygd fight

I agree, Arya would have ownd Durza in a fight, but as for the question it depends on the elf and thier power, it is difrent one to anouther so we have to know the exact situation before we can say who would win.

I say Elf. Ayra vs. Durza Ayra would have won if she didn't have to save the egg, but not all elves are equal.

i think it depends on the shade and the elf.if ormis was to try and take on durza he could killl him in like five seconds, but say it was a shade who had been around much longer and had a lot more strager sprits and stuff, well ormis being old would most likely have trouble killling him..........dang that was a run-on

Re: Shade or elf?
well, it would probaby depend on the elf and the shade. however, from what we know, killing a shade is very difficult. there have only been 3 people (including eragon) that have killed a shade. so i think the shade has a bigger possibility of winning.

Re: Shade or elf?
shade would win almost all the time, only 2 people ever killed a shade (besides eragon who need arya and saphira 2 do it) one was a elf/rider and another an elf.
plus shades can only be killed by a sword thrust through the heart
while elfs can be killed by all kinds of flesh injuries and by magic

A Shade probably would be harder to kill, but I think the strength is equal.
There might not be many Shades anyway.

Re: Shade or elf?
A Shade would most likely win, just because there have only been 3 people to kill a Shade (counting Eragon).
but i would also like to state that the only reason Arya was captured was because she was ambushed.
And I'm sure if it was between a fair duel, it would still be a close battle, but a Shade would most likely win. (unfortunately)

Re: Shade or elf?
well she was "ambushed" for a reason.... 1. she was on the edge of du weldenvarden so if they were in open combat some elf might have found out and gone to rescue his/her princess and most importantly save the egg.....
2. tell me what YOU would do: if you had to interpret a message in world war 2, would you attack the messenger directly in field or ambush him secretly in the middle of nowhere?
lol there may be more reasons...ask CP
the shade would win.... 1. a shade is faster and stronger 2. the RARELY get tired, even with the most complex and weakening spells 3. he could use those dark and unfriendly magic which elves dare not use (cowards that they are.... - said by murtagh lol) there are many more reasons

i know why she was ambushed.....i was just stating that he was ambushed to make a point to those who were saying that elves are totally weak compared to Shades because of Arya....

Re: Shade or elf?
I believe that it depends on the elf.I mean that only skilled elfes like Arya or Oromis can survive in a battle with a shade. Actually i would like to ask something...why there aren't good shades? If the mages of Galbatorix can transform a man into a shade,i believe that the ages of the varden or the elves can do it to a good warrior. To assure that he won't turn sides,he could give them his true name and give oaths in the ancient language. In this way he will be with the good side forever. Please correct me if i'm wrong

He cannot because it has been said that the only spirits powerful enough to overpower mages or spirits who would want to are evil.

Re: Shade or elf?
Spirits aren't good things, basically they are another conciousness, if someone summons a spirit and isn't powerful enough to control it the spirit will possess the person without hesitation, magic that makes use of spirits is the act of trying to enslave them, thats why Oromis wouldn't teach Eragon how to do so, out of fear that a shade-Rider could be born out of it and that.. would basically ensure the destruction of.. well everything quite frankly.
As for who would win between an Elf and a Shade, Eragon and Arya were able to kill one because they had eachother to achieve it, the second shade they killed was much more powerful than Durza but it seemed like they had a much easier time with it really..
That being said, an Elf like Oromis in his prime could likely defeat a shade, among other very powerful elves, but the average or non-rider powerful elf most likely couldn't do so alone. Shades are stronger, faster, and in every way more powerful than humans, likewise Elves are stronger, faster, and in every way more powerful than humans, but Shades have no qualms about using very dark magic or using other such horrible methods in order to kill an enemy, so under normal circumstances the Shade would likely win.

Thats why I said Oromis in his prime XD I took into account his fits, and the fact that he couldn't use magic, but he wasn't always that way

Brom might be able to beat a shade via magic. The immense amount of energy in the Aren would enable him to paralyse the shade for long enough for Brom to stab it through the heart.

As old as he was when he was with Eragon I don't think he would be able to. Probably in his younger days like Oromis but he didn't have that much power in Aren then.

Re: Shade or elf?
I think Arya suggested that the purpose of Brom storing so much energy in Aren was to protect himself if he ever had to fight a shade or another similarly powerful opponent which suggests that she thinks that there is enough energy in the ring to overcome a shade. As for Brom's speed it's irrelevant all Brom needs to do is bind the shade in place for a few seconds and stab it through the heart.

Re: Shade or elf?
Right, and we all know that Brom is good in tactics and is very intelligent. He also has a lot of magic abilities and with all that Aren's power,it's more likely that the shade is going to have a hard time...

Re: Shade or elf?
You also forget that in order to bind him requires magic. Brom would not cast magic on the shade at the very first because that is dangerous and stupid. He would have to do a lot more than just bind him and stab him through the heart. As demonstrated with Eragon, shades can fight and attack the mind at the same time, but its hard for most humans and even elves.

Re: Shade or elf?
Brom is highly trained dragon rider with years of experience. I'm sure he has thought of how he would beat/escape from a shade. As for the binding brom would just need wards to block any counter-attack cause by the shades wards aren would provide the energy.

Re: Shade or elf?
I like elves better, but a shade would so win unless it was like a really really powerful elf, or more than one elf. ^?^

Re: Shade or elf?
i think an elf is the most powerful becuase they have lived for hundreds of years and almost perfected their skills, while a shade is created so they just fling their power where they will. that's just my opinion.
