Underrated Movies
Movies that are very underrated.
The Alamo (2004) This movie was a huge bomb at the box office. Hardly anybody saw it. In fact, i didn't even know it existed until a few years ago. It was not advertised very well which is probably why it didn't do well. This is unfortunate because "Alamo" is actually a very good movie. The movie is, of course, about the famous battle at The Alamo during the Texas War for Independence. I like how the movie portrays Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie realistic people rather than larger-than-life characters like the other movies often portray them as. By the way, did you know that Crockett actually preferred to be called "David" rather than "Davy"? This is probably the most historically accurate movie about the Alamo. The battle scenes were very well done, there was a lot of emotion in this movie, and the movie does a good job of portraying both sides of the story. We see both the Texan and the Mexicans and how each side feels about what is going on. The film had some real tear jerking and heart-wrenching moments as well.
And to top it all off, the scene where Crockett plays the violin was just gorgeous.
Brother Bear: Here is a movie that shouldn't even have to be on this list. This was one of the last traditionally animated movies that Disney made. The animation was some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. The characters were likable and well fleshed out, the plot was great, and there was a shocking, and quite frankly heartbreaking twist right in the middle of it all. The songs by Phil Collins were great too. I've seen people griping about how this film is just a retread of other Disney movies but I don't understand that. This movie doesn't resemble any of the other Disney films I've seen. This is just a very underrated and under appreciated film. My favorite part...
Atlantis: The Lost Empire: Here is another underrated Disney film. Everybody I know hates this movie for some reason. The main complaint is that it didn't feel like a real Disney movie. Really? That's everybody's reason for not liking this movie? It had no musical numbers and is an action-packed adventure film. It had a rather dark plot, which I thought was a welcome change for a Disney movie. This was a fun movie with some cool battle scenes and I also liked the sci-fi/fantasy elements.
Treasure Planet: Yet another criminally underrated Disney film. This movie is based off Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel, "Treasure Island" except it takes place in space. As with the other Disney movies I've mentioned, the traditional animation was spectacular. Don't get me wrong. I like CGI but I will always love traditional animation more. The characters were a lot of fun and I really liked the father-son relationship between Jim and Silver. I thought it was very well done. Silver was one of my favorite characters, with all those strange gadgets he had. I like how he became a good guy at the end too. And despite all the sci-fi stuff in this movie, it actually stays pretty close to the source material. One thing a lot of people complain about was that it was unrealistic for the characters to travel in open spaceships that look like 18th century sailing ships. I don't care! I thought the ships looked great and frankly, people just don't use their imagination anymore.
One of the great scenes featuring the gorgeous animation and beautiful music in this movie.
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron:
Ok, this movie actually did well in theaters but nobody seems to remember it anymore. This is one of the most beautiful cartoon movies I have ever seen. There is very little dialog since the animal don't talk but the songs help tell the story. There's not much else to say. People don't hate it. It's just that nobody seems to remember it either.

Re: Underrated Movies
I have seen most of those movies and I agree, the one's you mentioned, that I've seen, are very good. Especially Spirit, but I'm partial to horse movies anyway. Spirit also had one of the best soundtracks... *reminisces about the "taming" scene*
I loved The Alamo to, but I haven't seen it in forever.
Brother Bear? Really? I loved that movie. How did it make the list??? My favorite characters were the two moose brothers.

Star Trek Insurrection:
A lot of people don't like this movie. The main complaint is that it felt more like an episode of the TV show than a feature length movie. While I agree that it would have made a better episode than a movie, it IS a good Star Trek story and I don't think it deserves to be completely dismissed as a bad story. The Ba'Ku planet was cool with all its little wonders, the music score was beautiful and serene, there was a nice space battle, and the movie had some decent action scenes. I guess that after how awesome First Contact was, people were just disappointed by this film's relatively weak plot. True, it's not the best Trek movie, but it certainly isn't the worst either :coughTheFinalFrontiercough:
I especially love the look on the enemy captain's face at 1:44 when the Enterprise is flying straight at him. That was awesome!
Some of the movie's great music.
The Iron Giant: Here is another great movie that should not be on this list. Iron Giant is an excellent movie. It was directed by Brad Byrd who later did The Incredibles and Ratatouille. I love the Cold War backdrop that this movie had and the fact that it plays on the alien invasion B-movies of the 1950s. In fact, the scene where the robot goes crazy and starts shooting thing up, the three death rays on his back look like the Martian death rays from the 1953 War of the Worlds movie. The movie also had a lot of emotional scenes though, particularly the ending, which makes me want to cry my eyes out every time I watch it.
Spoiler Alert!
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm:
As a long time fan of the 90s animated series, I absolutely love this movie! It was made by the same people who made Batman: The Animated Series and it really shows. The story is very dark and gritty, like the cartoon show itself. The voice acting it top notch and I absolutely love Mark Hamill's. What's really great is the twist at the end where we find out who the Phantasm is though. I don't want to give anything away though.

Re: Underrated Movies
Ah! Treasure Planet, Atlantis, and Spirit are three of my favorite animated movies!!! But you're right the first two do seem underrated and Spirit has been rather forgotten. I never did like the musical number thing in animated films... bleh lol.
As for my picks... well, there are a bunch of movies that critics (and the general public) disliked but that I loved. Off the top of my head I can think of Push and Jumper, two sci-fi movies that weren't well-received but that I really like. Also Lady in the Water. Shouldn't have marketed that one as a horror movie lol. I actually really like the story of that one.

Re: Underrated Movies
Wow, I never realized those made underrated movie lists! I loved Brother Bear, Treasure Planet, Iron Giant, Atlantis, and Spirit! I actually saw TP and IG in theaters when I was a kid, though TP was my all-time favorite. Honestly how can they not be remembered? Geez. I have all those movies too on VHS haha. Maybe we're just not with the times anymore.
You know The Princess and the Frog was created to use that drawing quality used by Disney. Especially since this generation of kids are used to seeing computer animation now. lol.

Re: Underrated Movies
I agree with all of these selections. I basically grew up on all these movies, especially Atlantis, Brother Bear, Iron Giant and others.
And may I add another seriously underrated movie that probably most of you have not seen: August Rush.
This movie was a masterpiece in my eyes, because it is all about a family that, although separated physically, are connected by music. The storyline was complex, yet simple, and the characters were very realistic and greatly played.
But most of all, the greatest thing about this movie is it's music. The entire movie is based on the notion of how powerful music is. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing, and the musical numbers that were played in here were spectacular and so moving that many times I had to fight tears the first time I heard them.
And then, the true masterpieces of masterpieces, the final scene where August Rush composes and conducts his Rhapsody. . . Probably one of the greatest pieces of music in history.

Oo I love August Rush; it was a beautiful movie. I thought of another very beautiful, but in my opinion underrated movie: Fluke. I love that movie; it was very touching, especially the score. This is my favorite song from the movie:

Re: Underrated Movies
August Rush is a really great movie, but it probably made the list because people don't appreciate music like they used to. It also earned a lot of points when I saw it had Alex O'Loughlin in it. XD
It was one of many movies that made me want to learn to play the guitar.
(Which I have yet to do.)

Yeah I never got a chance to see August Rush. I'm just into the fiction rather than non-fiction. XD lol. But it does look like a cute movie nonetheless. And what do you expect from this generation? These kids seem to want to listen to rap and hip-hop which are about drinking and sex and violence. No offense to people who like that music I'm just saying.
Another movie I think tha was greatly unappreciated was Zeus and Roxianne. It was sure a nonfictional movie but it had a dolphin! Heh but that movie was made quite a while ago so idk if anyone's heard of it. lol.

Re: Underrated Movies
In my opinion, the most underrated movie ever is Diney's 1995 (I think? off the top of my head) The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Not the best movie ever, but certainly the most underrated and under-apreciated.

Actually, it's not that quite underrated now as it was back then. Hunchback was one of the most beautiful of the Disney Renaissance movies. The art, the music, and the story was mind blowing, but at the time, nobody would think that a disney retelling of the morbid Victor Hugo novel would be worthwhile, which was why few really went to see it, and fewer liked it because of it's references to sex, greed, and racism. Yet over time, people began to appreciate the movie for what it was and it has a steadily growing following.

Re: Underrated Movies
Hmm I thought it would be the other way around. It was the first film I ever saw at the cinema And I still have it- as you get older you understand the sexual references and the truly dark nature of the film, which makes it well... just incredibly good. Disney don't make 'em like that any more.

Re: Underrated Movies
It actually didn't to too well in the box office. The show's original sales weren't as good as Disney had hoped and the movie was thought of as a flop back then. It was risky, after all, to make a children's movie of an adult book, and as such it was not as appealing. Yet you can't judge a book from it's cover and people appreciated the movie more as they grew up.
I wish I saw it in the cinema. The grand feel of the movie with the beautiful music would have been so incredible. (If they make a 3D version in the future, I'm definitely going to see that)

It's funny I saw Hunchback in theaters as well. XD Loved it too. I loved all the Disney movies that didn't make it as big as others.
I thought of another one, and it involves a princess never mentioned: Anastasia. I LOOOVED this movie as a kid, especially the music.

Re: Underrated Movies
I'm gonna add Red Tails to the list of underrated movies.
A lot of people didn't like this movie. My guess is because it was made by George Lucas and stars Cuba Gooding Jr. A lot of people don't like either of them. I actually thought the movie was pretty good though. The characters were likable, the action scenes were very well done, and the Me-262 jets were awesome. In fact, I think this is the first movie to ever include the German jets.
