What Lies Ahead

Open for anyone. IC: Being alone in the world was not fun at all. Autumn had come to the land and the trees had began to change all sorts of vibrant colors. It was a beautiful sight but Aurora knew it wouldn't last forever. It was still pleasantly warm but she knew winter was on the way. Soon the trees would be bare, game would become scarce, and the bitter cold would envelope the land once again. Aurora thought back to the previous winter and how horrible it had been. Her kind were used to a hot and arid climate. While Aurora appreciated the abundant resources that Alagaesia had to offer she hated the harsh winters here. The lioness lay curled up in the shadow of a large oak tree drawing nondescript forms in the dirt with her claws. Thinking of the approaching winter made her sad. The lioness needed to find a new home for the winter. Maybe going further south would help. She could at least find a place where it didn't get as bitterly cold as it did here. Perhaps she could follow the flocks of migrating birds and go south. Why am I cursed to be alone? What did I ever do to anyone? At the second question, the guards she had killed in Uru'baen came to mind. That was different! They deserved it! I never harmed anyone who didn't deserve what they got! she told her self. Aurora's ears suddenly perked up as she heard a sound. Someone was approaching. Based on her past experiences, every time she encountered someone, they either ran away in terror or tried to kill her. Wanting to avoid yet another unpleasant incident, the lioness quickly scrambled up the large oak tree, vanishing into the brightly colored foliage. _________________ And then Saphira ate Edward, Bella, and Jacob. Alagaesia had become so much more vibrant with the arrival of the new season, but Natori dreaded the upcoming winter. Being a drifter, he doesn't have a home where he could sleep comfortably, protected from the cold. He was probably going to have to purchase a warm cloak soon. Feroc padded next to Natori, glancing around eagerly for some game. Feroc needed meat to survive, and thus couldn't settle on the path of vegetarianism that Natori had settled on. Feroc caught sight of some sort of animal in the distance, but the large wolf couldn't distinguish what it was due to all of the foliage and trees blocking his view. Feroc immediately dashed forward, but as he cleared the underbrush, he found that the animal was gone. Natori walked up to Feroc and glanced around. He was sure that he had seen something or someone here. "Hello? Is there anybody here? We don't mean any harm," Nate proclaimed, his voice producing a slight echo. Well, he didn't mean any harm if the other creature didn't. She watched as the human... or at least what she thought was a human, came closer. By his side was what appeared to be a large wolf. The lioness had already picked out a rout of escape in case things turned ugly. She could vanish into the brown grass and be halfway across the meadow before either of them had time to blink. As they came closer, Aurora realized that it was only a matter of time before the wolf discovered her location. If these people proved to be trouble, she would have a better chance of escaping if she were on the ground and not in a tree. Reluctantly, the lioness leaped down from the tree, landing elegantly on the ground in front of the two strangers, her amber eyes shifted from one to the other. Starting to grow impatient, he made to move off, but a soft thud caught his attention. A large lion with an elegant mane but equally intimidating appearance landed. My, I haven't seen many lions around this area Feroc murmured, shifting his weight slightly. He extended his mind and grazed her consciousness before recoiling at the realization that it was surprisingly large and very intelligent. Feroc shared his revelation silently with Natori, who's eyes widened slightly in response. "Excuse me, but you aren't the everyday average lion, are you?" Nate asked curiously. Feroc slowly padded towards the lion, moving in slow bursts so as to not startle the lioness. It's alright. IC: Aurora tilted her head, surprised when the wolf spoke. The wolf's companion spoke next. I was at one time but not anymore. Aurora replied to his question. The human called Galbatorix did this to me. They merged an elf's soul with mine. she explained. This was the first person she had ever told this to. You are the first people I've met who have not run away in terror at the mere sight of me. I was about half-asleep at the time of making that post, so that figures. :p IC: Natori's eyes widened when the lioness talked of her special condition, and how Galbatorix was involved in it's making. Natori grimaced and gritted his teeth. What purpose would Galbatorix have in ruining an animal's life like this? Natori wondered to himself. Natori glanced at the lioness with a hint of sympathy. He had always treasured animals, and such an experience for one was something no one should have to go through. "I am sorry to hear that," Natori whispered. "Feroc isn't exactly like average wolves either, so maybe I'm just used to it. I also love all kinds of animals, though." Truthfully, Natori himself was something of a beast. Even though he resembled a human, it was almost as if he could sense something deep within him... Natori offered a small smile. "I'm Natori, and this is Feroc," he gestured to his wolf companion. It is a pleasure to meet you, Natori and Feroc. the lioness replied. It was the name of the elf who died so that Aurora could have her extraordinary abilities. Aurora had taken on the name in honor of the elf. I have been alone ever since it happened. I no longer fit in among the animals nor do I fit in among people. I am a freak... Honestly, you are the first people I have ever met who haven't run away from me. Aurora wondered if these two might know a better place to spend the winter. The lioness looked up at the sky and said I am dreading the coming winter. My kind are meant for a warm climate and I hate the bleak lifelessness of it. IC: Natori nodded as she introduced herself. "It is indeed a pleasure to meet you," Natori responded, and Feroc nodded towards the lioness. Nate's gaze was distant as she explained her current situation and how called herself a freak. "You aren't a freak," he replied almost a little too strongly. Of course, his rising anger wasn't directed at her, but the people that forced beings like Feroc, Natori, or Aurora to feel this way. It wasn't their fault that they were born...like this. At her request, Natori frowned. "Unfortunately, me and my companion are drifters. Though, we have passed many caves that keep warmth. However, they aren't very close to here," Nate said before shrugging off the pack on his back. He pulled out his wallet and fingered the money he had saved inside of it. He could afford a comfortable home for three with this money and a little more he could obtain from jobs. However, he doubted that Aurora wanted to live in a public spot. I was thinking they could head to Surda but they're not going to leave the continent. IC: Aurora sighed. Then an idea hit her. Perhaps it doesn't get as cold and miserable further to the south. I don't know the lay of the land very well though. It was worth a try heading south. Aurora didn't have any particular ties to any part of this land. She had never been down south before and this presented an opportunity for her to explore new places. So you are outcasts just like me? the lioness asked. IC: As Aurora mentioned the south, Natori thought of Surda, Feinster, Belatona, and the other cities that lie in the south. Although, it was a good idea, one that Natori hadn't thought of before. He was envious of Feroc's growing winter coat and was miserable in the biting cold. The more he thought about it, the better of an idea it sounded to him. At Aurora's question, Nate replied, "Yeah, we are outcasts, more or less," he said. What would define an outcast? Being alone time and time again with only another being or less for company? Having to worry about what people think about you everywhere you go? Not being able to relate to anyone? If that was the case, then yes, Natori and Feroc could definitely classify themselves as outcasts. "Anyway, that sounds like a really good idea. Mind if we came?" Aurora stated at his comment. Aurora was surprised when Natori asked to come along. Nobody ever wanted to travel with her. Of course! the lioness exclaimed excitedly, her eyes gleaming happily. Maybe now she wouldn't have to be alone anymore! It made Aurora happy that she was going to have company on this little adventure. Happiness... It was something that she rarely experienced. IC: Natori pondered this for a moment as he ran at a speed faster than even the average elf. It might look odd to anyone they passed by; a wolf, lioness, and unknown two-leg running together. "Surda..." he murmured, thinking back on when he and Feroc had once visited the city. "I'm pretty sure if we keep going in this direction, we'll reach a lake." He couldn't remember the name of it at the time, but he continued, "The lake is directly south of Furnost, which is a little to the east of us if I'm right," Natori murmured. How long do you think it will take to get there? The lioness did not want to seem impatient but she was eager to put the cold lands behind her as quickly as possible. She had no idea what Surda looked like but she imagined a place with tall grass, rolling hills and plentiful game... the kind of place where a lion would feel right at home. "If we encounter little to no Empire patrols or other trouble, then we should probably be there in a couple of hours," Natori said. At the speed they were all running at, it couldn't take too long to reach their destination. He had only been to Surda once, about a year ago if memory served him right. Now that the Varden was settled in Surda, it would probably look much more different than it did before. No matter, it sounded like an interesting venture nonetheless. Natori especially wanted to reach the very southern end of Alagaesia in Surda. The afternoon sun was warm and pleasant. For the first time since she could remember, Aurora was actually happy. She would take care of her new friends, no matter what. Aurora certainly hoped they didn't encounter any empire patrols. She did not want any trouble. But as they neared the border, there would no doubt be some kind of activity going on. "Would any soldiers of the Empire recognize you? If not, then they'll probably just be a little too interested in a man running with two other large beings," he didn't want to simply call them animals, mostly because they were just as, if not more intelligent than he himself. "They'll probably ask questions. If we clear the river and find an Empire patrol, they'll wonder why we're walking in this direction, towards Surda. It might come down to a fight, but as long as there isn't a Rider of the Empire or something like that around, we'll definitely win," Natori explained. He took a deep breath to consolidate for the few he had taken while he was talking. He felt a small hunger in his chest, and he turned his head to Feroc and Aurora while running. I doubt it. The Empire sought to keep it a secret. I don't think some low level grunts would have any knowledge of my existence. The lioness hoped they wouldn't have to fight. She hated needless bloodshed. True she was a predator and had no reservations about hunting animals, but Aurora knew it was wrong to kill sentient beings, at least that is what the elf's spirit told her. She was so confused by the strange customs on the two-leggeds. At Nate's question, Aurora replied I am somewhat hungry.
