Post Downtime between Saturday and Sunday (12th to 13th)
Hey everyone,

Plans are currently underway to transfer SaphiraForums on a brand new server. This will require us to take the site offline during a couple of hours while the transfer is being completed. Once SF as been transfered to it's new home and we have determined that no issues are present we will be able to reactivate it to everyone.

With any server transfer there will be a period of time where not everyone will be able to access the new page. This is attributed to the time that it takes for it's new address to be propagated to all of your machines. As to prevent issues that this would cause we will provide you with a transparent method that will resolve it. In transparent we mean a method that you would not have to do anything to get it to work.

This new server will provide us with a more secure environment to host SaphiraForums and will hopefully give better performance then Dune, our current server.

I will start to do some preparatory work today and the transfer is expected to take place Saturday. Expect a couple of hours of downtime as we move everything to it's new home.

Well the database transfer is now completed :D . Still have to change the site to the new server, but the current site is now being served it's database from the new server. If you happen to notice a problem please let me know. No data should have been lost, but it there is we can still recover it.

The site will be switch to the new server in the next two weeks. The most difficult part of the transfer as now been completed. :-o

Maybe I am just imagining it, but it seems more responsive then it was previously. 8)

That would be a good sign given that we have not finished yet. You don't see it, but given that the site is now divided between two server there should be more delays. If even with that the site is faster then things should go really well for us.

Another point is that during the 2 and half hour transfer the new server was running at almost constant 100% load. Even with that I was able to access the sites that I have transferred and it's control panel as if this was not even happening. Dune served us well, but it would have never been able to cope with that.

We were also running out of space on the current server. As I was doing the transfer I had to make sure that the space would not be taken completely. For example the database for SF currently stands at 1.3GB. If I had to make an exact copy on the old server I would have runed out of space. Most regular hosting companies don't allow databases that are bigger then 1GB in size.
