That's My Lullaby
Several months had passed since Fernir’s life had been ended prematurely. Despite the time gone by Danuvaen mourned just as deeply as he had the night it had happened. Each day that lapsed intensified his hatred and bitterness for the Varden. It was not unusual for him to fly close to their encampment, but he could never get too close. Surviving purely on citizens from nearby villages that no one would miss and small fodder, he was nowhere near strong enough to take on the army, even if Eragon and Saphira did not join the fray. He was forced to content himself with glaring bitterly from a distance, dreaming of the blood of the sentinels soaking his jaws.
As satisfying as he knew the vicious revenge would be, Danuvaen had to face this cautiously. A Riderless dragon was not helpless, not in the slightest. But he was far weaker than he had once been, he had no one to heal him if something went wrong, and the continent was in tumult. Dangerous creatures roamed everywhere, the humans were particularly defensive, and he desperately did not want to be found by Saphira. If that were to happen she could easily take him down, and he did not want that. For him to perish now would mean Fernir would never be avenged. That would be the worst outcome he could possibly think of.
All of an hour ago, Danuvaen had landed on the tiniest of mountain ranges near Uru’baen. Stoic blue eyes focused on the building reaching into the sky, the place where Galbatorix resided. It would be foolish to trot happily into the city and expect to be welcomed with open arms. No, for all the king knew, he could be a spy for the Varden. In fact, there was a chance he may recognize his scale color as synonymous with the egg that had been stolen from him almost three decades ago. If that were the case surely he would consider the fact that the elves had been the ones who stole the egg, and thus, him, and that his loyalty should be with the elves. He would not immediately know of the circumstances that had led him to stand on this ledge, staring intently at the city beneath him. He would not understand that the Varden were not his friends, and nor were any elves who aligned themselves with those misfiring scum. But he would find a way. He would find a way to gain the king’s favor, ally himself with his great forces, and do what he knew had to be done.
What came after that, Danuvaen wasn’t sure. For the time being, he was solely concerned with the matter at hand.

Re: That's My Lullaby
Solarae slunk along in the tree line, eyeing the great, evil city from her distant vantage point. She had penetrated its defenses only once before, but that attack had ended in defeat. It wasn't as if she planned to have another go at taking down Galbatorix, but she did want to get another look at Uru'baen. It's defenses seemed overwhelming, and that was what she could see from out here.
Abruptly, the scent of another dragon entered her nostrils. It was vaguely familiar. The orange retreated under cover of the trees, turning her blue eyes to the sky. A dark-colored shape approached on the top of the hill she was near, coming out on the crest. Solarae's eyes widened as she recognized the dragon. It was Danuvaen, a dragon she had encountered once months (or was it a couple years?) ago. She had challenged him when he tried to eat a two-leg, and he had wisely avoided a fight with her. What was he doing here?
Solarae watched him for a few moments. He looked thinner, more gaunt and desperate and in worse condition. He was staring at Uru'baen with something like hunger. It was an expression she disliked immediately. After a while of silence, she at last decided to contact him. Danuvaen? What are you doing here at Uru'baen? she ventured tentatively, faint suspicion in her voice.

Re: That's My Lullaby
Perhaps it would be wise to hunt before attempting this. Danuvaen knew quite well that nothing he could catch nearby would sate his hunger, but it could lend him more energy in case a fight broke out. That was not at all what he desired, but perhaps if he could prove himself against Shruikan or even Thorn, Galbatorix would realize his potential. Sheer size put him at an advantage, and it was commonly known that a hungry, desperate dragon was quite dangerous. Though both Thorn and Shruikan had far more training than he did, he had something worth fighting for. And if there were even the slightest chance that Galbatorix could add another dragon to his ranks he wouldn’t allow him to be killed if he could help it.
Despite the careful barriers Danuvaen maintained around his mentality, he felt a familiar feminine presence, followed closely by a voice he recognized. He looked up with a start, recognizing her immediately as Solarae, the little dragon who had refused to allow him to consume a short-life two-legs some months ago. He couldn’t help but respect her for her prowess with fighting and the light personality she possessed, but he also couldn’t let her keep him from completing his mission. It would be useless to have covered this distance for no purpose.
‘I have wandered here to examine the city,’ he half-lied. ‘In my training I was told about it, but until now I had never seen it for myself.’

Re: That's My Lullaby
Solarae waited for a few moments until the larger dragon finally responded. His tone didn't sound exactly trustworthy, however. Disregarding caution, she strode up the hill straight through the trees, heading directly towards him. That may be true, but I also saw the looks you were giving that place. They were certainly not "I'm just curious" looks, Danuvaen. A hatchling could tell you're planning something more, she stated, blue eyes narrowing as she came to an abrupt hault about a (normal-sized) dragonlength from him. I'm not sure exactly what that is, man, but let me tell you: you do not want to get mixed up with Galbatorix or Uru'baen, she continued, eyes now drilling into him suspiciously. She ruffled her wings impatiently, waiting for his response to that.

Re: That's My Lullaby
Danuvaen may not be the most skilled liar, nor did he want to be. But the ease with which Solarae saw through his fallacy frustrated him. He held back a disgruntled flare of smoke and turned his head away from her slightly, eying her cautiously. She had always been on the opposite side as himself, it seemed, but she had never posed such a threat to what he intended to do as she did then.
'Galbatorix is not a good person, I am aware,' he answered carefully. 'But neither are those who fight for the Varden. They are just as selfish, just as jaded.'
His claws dug into the ground, stabilizing him in case of any surprises. Solarae didn't seem like the type who would suddenly fly at him unless he directly provoked her, but the last year had taught him to be suspicious of everything and everyone.
'I do not know who you fight for, or whether you fight at all. But there need not be any blood shed today. I am sure you find good reason for your beliefs; I do, as well. Besides, I am a Riderless dragon, nary a threat. I do not know the ways of my feral brothers, and the other half of my soul, my very essence, is no longer with me. You should not fear my opposition that greatly, I am sure.'

Re: That's My Lullaby
Solarae frowned at Danuvaen's words about Galbatorix and the Varden. Did he think these were the only two sides he could choose? Did he not consider the option of choosing no one, or, even better, dragonkind? As he continued, her eyes narrowed as she grew somewhat angry. When he finished, she snorted forcefully, her tail lashing. Do you think it is fear that drives my words?! No, it is not, she stated forcefully, and abruptly her countenance transformed into a more peaceful state, It is concern, Danuvaen. I do not wish to see a fellow dragon taken by that mad-man. If you go to him, he will twist your mind and steal your Name and bend you to his will. He will torture you for the slightest misbehavior, or perhaps for no reason at all. He's not just evil, Danuvaen: he's the enemy of our species. Even if the Varden's as messed-up as you say they are, they are at least not working to exterminate or enslave dragonkind. As she said this, Solarae became more forceful in her tone.
And another thing, didn't you think there could be a third option? You say you don't know how to live as a feral dragon... did you consider asking? We're not savages, you know--most of us wild dragons'll help out another, she continued, her voice still confident and critical of him, but at her last words she offered a small grin. I didn't know for sure what you were doing before, but I'm pretty sure I know now, and let me tell you: it ain't a good idea. In fact, it's a pretty horrible one, she said, her voice quieter. Her blue eyes held more concern now; she didn't want one of her kin to fall prey to the Mad King of Alagaesia, the king who had killed her parents and forced her into hiding and killed nearly every other dragon he could get his hands on.
