The Five Stages
[[I wasn't able to get all of Danuvaen's story out there before Inheritance was released, so these events take place after the Varden leaves Surda, but not before they get much further.]]
The rocky ridges of the Beor mountains concealed Danuvaen from sight as he curled up like an overlarge cat, his legs folded under him and his tail over his nose, and attempted to rest. He was closest to the eastern edge, having just recently fled from the ranks of the Varden. It had been only days, in fact, since his Rider had been killed. He was faring no better than one might expect. He hadn't groomed his deep grey scales in all that time, and he had eaten, but only so he could keep up his flight. He remained in the Beor mountains so that he could use them for cover and eat the easy to catch Feldunost that roamed seemingly unaware that there was a giant, vicious predator among them.
A contented hum emanated from Danuvaen's chest after he finally fell asleep. In his mind he saw Fernir leaning against him protected under his wing, safe and unharmed. His death had only been a nightmare; fate would never allow them to be parted. That would be wrong, inhumane, and cruel. The dream was so vivid and convincing Danuvaen reached his head around to nuzzle Fernir, only to find empty air. The contrast from the dream's image was disconcerting enough that he awoke to find that it had, in fact, been a dream. He allowed himself a whimper of grief and unfurled. There was no way he would be able to fall back asleep, he knew. He stretched his wings, braced his legs, and took off from the ground, flapping madly. This nocturnal flight was not meant for travel, as evidenced by the fact that he changed directions erratically. It was only to help clear his mind and to give him something to focus on besides the harsh reality he found himself in. He was lost. He didn't know what to do anymore; he didn't even know who he was. As Fernir had been an elf, he had been aware of his true name since he was young, and he had helped Danuvaen come to know his own. He spoke it softly to himself then, but there was no jolt of recognition in his body. He was Danuvaen, dragon with no Name, with no Rider. And without a partner-of-heart-and-mind, it would be far too easy for him to lose control of both mind and heart.

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana sat on a rocky perch on the side of a cliff preening her feathers. It was really one of the few places in Alagaesia that her race had ever called home. It was the only place she herself had ever actually felt at home. Mir let out a lonely sigh, looking into the dark sky overhead. She wanted to tell herself that it was better being alone but ever since she had lost her friend, Riena, everything happy in life seemed to disappear. She still clung to the hope that her brother was alive somehow, though every day it seemed less and less likely. For years she had searched for Fletcher and had not found a trace of him.
Curse that evil monster who took them from me! May she rot in hell for eternity Mir hissed to herself, thinking of Agatha and how the evil woman had murdered her family and taken her brother prisoner.
She went back to grooming her feathers and fur when suddenly a shadow moved across the moon. Mir looked up and saw the unmistakable silhouette of a dragon flying overhead. Fearing that the Forsworn were still hunting her because she had assisted the Varden, she quickly scrambled under a rock ledge and out of sight, hoping that it wasn't too late. It wasn't easy for a creature her size to hide under the narrow ledge.
Truthfully, Mir was never a member of the Varden herself. She didn't even care about the war. However, her friend Riena had been a member and Mirriana had helped her during some of her missions. Because of this, Mir herself was now on the run from the Empire. She watched the dragon intently, her tail swishing back and forth impatiently. Her unblinking orange eyes watched the stranger as she sat there waiting to see what he would do. This dragon looked massive. Still, Mirriana was quick and agile and if it came down to a fight, she had razor sharp talons that could do some decent damage.

Re: The Five Stages
Danuvaen had lived a fairly sheltered life for a dragon. Though he had some training in the ways of the world there were many things he still didn't know. He was aware that there were creatures he hadn't encountered, of air, of land, and of the sea. He didn't feel a particularly strong pull to get to know them, especially not when there was something far more pressing on his mind.
His grief-driven flight didn't distract him from a flash of white on the ground. Danuvaen focused in on it and he couldn't determine what it had been, only that he could still see it a little bit. He hovered over it, his wings sending big gusts of wind at the ground. Whatever he'd seen he was fairly certain it was edible. Most things were edible to him so he hadn't really learned to proceed with caution.
Slowly Danuvaen descended, making far less noise now. To anyone with experience it was evident that he had gone into hunting mode. Like a great dark shadow he landed fifty feet away from the unidentified creature, flattened himself to the ground, and began to stalk forward.

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana's heart almost skipped a beat when she saw the dragon turning around. He was headed right for her. The gryphon crouched down load as she saw the dragon land only fifty feet away. That was way too close for comfort. As he began to come closer, Mir knew she had to move or she would be trapped. Summoning all her courage, the female gryphon sprang from her hiding place sliding to a stop in the open. She faced the dragon, letting out a low screech and crouching low with her wings spread out, ready to bolt off into the sky in an instant. Her tail lashed from side to side like a cat ready to pounce. Mir was certain she could outfly this dragon if she had to. Though he was powerful, his size was probably a weakness that would slow him down. Mir was extremely fast and agile both in the air and on the ground.
I advise you not to come any closer, dragon! the female gryphon hissed, her orange eyes narrowing.

Re: The Five Stages
In only a few steps he would pounce on this unknown creature and it wouldn't serve then to learn what it was, but he would certainly find himself enjoying a fairly sizable dinner. That was far more important than its species. Just as he tensed his legs to spring the thing launched itself from behind the rock and screeched at him, adopting a fighting stance, as if that would intimidate him. He started to move forward anyway when it spoke to him in a decidedly female voice.
Danuvaen stopped and frowned. It was clearly intelligent, and to eat it would be like eating another dragon. Did he care? There was a small part of him that did, but for the most part he was just hungry and he would probably eat Saphira herself if the opportunity arose.
Still, not to proceed with caution would be foolish. This bird-like creature had surprised him with intelligent speech. He didn't know what else she was capable of and even if he hadn't properly learned the tricks of self preservation there were some things that came instinctively.
Danuvaen flicked his tail back and forth in agitation, inadvertently crushing several boulders. 'And if I do? What is there to keep me from advancing?

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana hissed again. This dragon was clearly out to cause her harm. Mir didn't want to back down though. Her pride made her stand her ground. However, she was brave, not stupid. Mir knew attacking the dragon head on would be suicide. Riena had taught the gryphon an thing or two about a dragon's weaknesses in the event she ever had to actually fight one. Mirriana had learned where many of the sensitive pressure points on a dragon's body were and she was already picking out which one she was going to hit if this dragon decided to attack.
Hitting a pressure point would result in agonizing pain that would leave the dragon temporarily stunned as long as Mirriana kept applying pressure to it. Best of all, it would require almost no energy to do this, jut a little bit of physical force.
As the dragon challenged her, it was clear there was no other way this was going to end. Mir clenched her talons as if sh were just digging them into the ground but in fact she was clutching a small stone that would be her instrument for disabling this monster.
Pity. I was hoping to avoid having to use violence, but if trouble is what you want then that's exactly what you'll get! Mir answered, crouching low and ready to attack.
She leaned to the left as if she were going to bolt off in that direction but being a cunning warrior, she was actually poised to attack from the right side to fool her opponent.

Re: The Five Stages
Danuvaen hadn't yet met a foe that could stand against a dragon, besides another dragon, so he didn't anticipate any sort of struggle from the little bird thing. He snorted, shaking his wings and folding them close to his body to protect them. There was some hint of caution in his motions, since he didn't know what she was capable of. But it wasn't enough to make him back off. On the contrary it made his blood run hot as he anticipated the challenge. There was still a great weight in his chest but the adrenaline rush helped quell it for the time being. That was the greatest thing he could have hoped for.
A direct physical confrontation seemed too risky as he examined the bird's talons and sharp beak, so Danuvaen formulated another idea. He breathed in deep, then spewed a stream of flame nearly as thick as his neck. It was more of a test than anything else, but if he managed to cook the little bird like a roast chicken he would certainly not complain about that.

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana knew the moment the dragon's jaws opened that all bets were off. Like a bolt of lightning, she leaped to the right just as she had planned, narrowly avoiding a stream of fire.
If he singes my feathers I'm going to be pissed! she snorted to herself.
In a stunning move of agility, the female gryphon swung around in the air, using the feathered fan on the end of her tail like a rudder. She flew toward the dragon's right side and latched onto him just above the right from shoulder, careful to avoid the sharp spines. Mir clung to the dragon's body with her retractable hind claws. Mirriana took the small stone she had picked up and jabbed it into the joint just slightly in front of the dragon's shoulder, right into the pressure point as she had planned. She then leaped over to another pressure point just behind the dragon's neck with the intention of repeating the process.

Re: The Five Stages
The little bird-cat proved that perhaps more caution would have been wise. She avoided his flame with seemingly little effort and before Danuvaen could even attempt to evade her she was on his back. He thrashed about, roaring angrily. At this point she was little more than a nuisance. She wasn't harming him, but he certainly didn't want her on his back. But then she got vicious. The force applied to the pressure point just before his shoulder made him howl in rage, surprise, and pain. He felt her release him and move toward his neck. What she intended there he wasn't entirely certain. Danuvaen didn't know the location of all of the pressure points in his body so he couldn't be sure whether that was what she was after. What he could be sure of, however, was that it couldn't be good for him. He growled, causing his entire body to vibrate, and extended his wings. Instead of trying to buck her off of his back like an untrained colt he began to beat her with his wings, trying to disarm her. All it would take is for her claws to slip once and he'd be rid of her.
Instead of just waiting for that to happen Danuvaen threw himself rapidly onto his back with his wings once more folded safely against his back, meaning to crush her under his massive weight. He didn't mind eating a flattened bird-cat. He was fairly certain she would still taste the same whether she was two or three dimensional, and he was far too hungry to care.

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana was just about to attack a major pressure point when the dragon went berserk, wildly trying to shake her off. Mir dropped the rock she had been using as a weapon. Suddenly the dragon began to turn over. Mirriana quickly sprang from the dragon's back, narrowly avoiding being crushed. He was much stronger than she had thought. At this point it seemed that discretion was the better part of valor and that it was time for her to beat a hasty retreat. Mir took off like a rocket into the night sky, flying at incredibly speed away from where the dragon was still in the process of getting up.

Re: The Five Stages
To his surprise, Danuvaen's attempt to dislodge the bird-cat was successful. She launched herself into the air and fled at shocking speed. Danuvaen didn't give himself time to think about it. He snarled and took off after her, flapping quickly to gain speed and altitude. The wind was at his back, lending him some of its velocity. The only problem with that was that it was surely aiding the bird-cat as well.
Despite his efforts Danuvaen wasn't gaining on her. On the contrary it seemed that she was increasing the distance between them faster than he could perceive it. He grunted and glanced down at the ground, to find a large cluster of white that was a particularly big herd of Feldunost. When there was such easy prey beneath him Danuvaen wasn't about to expend all this energy pursuing the bird-cat. He changed direction rapidly and dove to the ground, catching several Feldunost beneath his feet and two in his jaws. He snapped those up while the uninjured ones fled in panic. Before they could get far he loped after them, catching them easily and swallowing them with minimal effort. Once he'd eaten nearly all of them he went back to the ones he'd crushed and ate those as well. There had to be at least fifteen Feldunost in his stomach now, and though he was well aware the dwarves would be enraged he was pleased. He took to the skies once more, flying leisurely in the same direction as the bird-cat. He didn't care to eat it anymore. He only wanted to get into the mountains and get back to sleep.

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana flew until she could no longer see the dragon pursuing her. He had instead gone after a herd of Feldunost. Mir slowed down to conserve her energy. She was not really tired. Mir actually preferred traveling at night. She was more nocturnal than most gryphons. Still, it had already been a long day and she just wanted to sleep. Mir found a quiet looking valley and descended, landing in a forest. The trees here were huge. Mirriana climbed up one of the giant trees and walked out onto one of the branches in the middle of the tree. She draped her four legs across it while resting her head on the branch itself as if she were a giant cat. The gryphon closed her eyes and took a deep breath, inhaling the sweet pine scent that was all around her.

Re: The Five Stages
Danuvaen had stopped paying attention to the scents in the air, tired and sated as he was. He circled over the mountains, looking for a good place to sleep. He couldn't land just anywhere. Being out in the open in such a vulnerable state as sleep wasn't wise, so he needed tree cover. The only place he saw that would work was a valley that grew thick with tall trees. Danuvaen descended slowly and landed near the base of one of the tallest trees. Its branches hid him from aerial view and he felt confident that he was as invisible as he would ever be. As he was downwind from the bird-cat he didn't see her in the tree as he curled up, his wings folded, his head resting on his great front legs.

Re: The Five Stages
Mir must have slept for hours. She awoke just as the sun was coming up, still lying across the branch. The female gryphon stood up and stretched out on top of the tree limb, and then she jumped down, silently gliding to the ground below.
As Mirriana walked through the forest, she caught an all-to-familiar scent. Dragon... she said to herself recognizing it as the same one from the night before. The female gryphon froze and looked around. She couldn't see the wretched beast but she knew he was somewhere nearby. A feeling of horror overcame her as she realized it could have easily snuck up on her while she was sleeping.
Mirriana silently took off into the air, flying to the top of a ridge overlooking the valley and landing on the summit.

Re: The Five Stages
Exhausted and full-bellied, Danuvaen slept much better than he could have hoped. His rest was dreamless and refreshing. When he awoke he unfurled slowly and yawned, showing off ivory white pointed teeth and a long, barbed tongue. Bit by bit he stretched his limbs and rolled his shoulders, loosening his muscles. He breathed in deeply and inhaled a big lungful of air accented by the scent of the bird-lion. His eyes flitted back and forth, but he couldn't place the scent. Either way, he wasn't terribly interested in her today. He was still sated from all those Feldunost, and he wasn't in the mood for a fight. He just wanted to start his trip to Uru'baen and get there before the Varden did. As untried as he was he needed to train and become more powerful if he was to stand a chance.
There was a long day of travel ahead of him. Danuvaen stretched his wings and took off, circling a little to gain altitude. He would need to fly high to get over the mountaintops. Once he was satisfied he propelled himself forward at a comfortable speed. His eyes were focused on the ground as he watched for anything that might harm him. It allowed him to see the bird-lion perched on a nearby ridge. Danuvaen paused and hovered, uncertain how to proceed. As uncouth as he had a tendency to be, his natural regal instincts made him feel like a beast for attacking another intelligent creature. Two-legs were one thing. Two-legs were, in his mind, cruel beasts that deserved to be eaten. But the bird-lion had never shown any sign that she deserved to be eaten. So Danuvaen went through the insurmountable task of swallowing his pride and he descended slowly at a pace that naturally did not convey any sign of a threat. He landed across from her and kept his distance, not wanting her to think he intended to attack when she was distracted.
'I apologize for my unruly behavior,' he told her, bowing his head. 'It is not a dragon's lot to prey on other creatures so intelligent as to have use of speech. I have shamed myself and my race.'

Re: The Five Stages
Mir's heart sank when she saw the dragon approaching. She flattened her ears against her skull and flared her wings threateningly.
She was a little taken aback when the dragon apologized for his earlier behavior. Still it didn't change the fact that he tried kill her. That wasn't exactly something that gryphons forgave easily.
Mirriana cocked her hear curiously, orange eyes focused intently on him. Why were you so upset anyhow? she asked curiously.
OCC: Short.

Re: The Five Stages
The bird-cat's apprehension was entirely understandable. Danuvaen imagined if he were confronted by a creature so much larger than himself as he was to her, especially one that had recently tried to eat him, he would be very uneasy. Her behavior only made him feel more like a mindless animal.
She didn't accept his apology, which he noted. On the contrary she turned the attention to the reason for his grieving. He masked his thoughts carefully and betrayed nothing in his expression. He didn't exactly feel like explaining to a complete stranger that he had lost his Rider. He didn't even know whether she'd understand the depth of the agony that burdened him, and if she didn't he wouldn't care to explain.
'I had not eaten in some time,' he answered, making it sound as though his hunger had been the only reason for his behavior. 'Hunger will make a creature do unusual things.'

Re: The Five Stages
Mir wasn't sure the entirely believed what the dragon was telling her. He was trying to hide something. Still, it was no concern of hers so she didn't press the matter. He mentioned his hunger as the motivation for his behavior. Mirriana was unable to relate to that. Though she had been through some difficult times in her life, she had never been so hungry that she would consider eating another sentient creature. In fact, in the gryphon culture, it was considered one of most heinous acts one could commit.
Sure, gryphons had no problem ripping somebody's face off for pissing them off but to kill and eat a sentient creature was one of the greatest taboos there was.
As Mir looked upon the dragon again, she could see a great sadness in his eyes. Oh, he was trying very hard to hide it but it was still there. Mirriana wondered what could have happened to him but she did not dare ask.

Re: The Five Stages
'Whether you choose to accept it or not, you have my apologies.'
That said, he extended his wings and took off, flying lower this time. He would probably have to keep changing altitudes to avoid slamming into a mountainside and freezing; thus was why he hated flying in the mountains. But the Beor mountains did not extend too far north, and he would be free of them soon. He ought to be more concerned about the open plains ahead. And strangely, he didn't look forward to the strange solitude. He knew even when he reached Uru'baen if he was accepted as an asset of war he would still be fundamentally alone. He snorted derisively at himself as he flew steadily in a north east direction. He'd been alone before, he could continue to do it.

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana stood and watched as the dragon flew away. He had apologized once more before flying off. Mirriana actually felt a tinge of pity for him in her heart. He seemed so... alone. Mir spread her wings and took off into the sky, flying in the same general direction as the dragon. She didn't know why but she wanted to help him, to ease his pain. There was a great loneliness about this dragon that Mir herself was all too familiar with.
Mir kept her distance from the dragon, after all it was still kinda hard to trust someone who had tried to kill her only hours ago.

Re: The Five Stages
For quite some time Danuvaen flew onward in an endless blur of monotony, his thoughts muted, his eyes directed right in front of him. Focusing on the drafts of wind and the temperature changes that he needed to navigate kept him slightly more preoccupied than he would be flying in clear skies. For that, he was grateful.
An hour or more must have passed before Danuvaen decided he should do a quick mental sweep both to keep his bearings and figure out where exactly he was, and to see if there was anything dangerous in the vicinity. His thoughts brushed the familiar feminine mind of the bird-cat, and he glanced back curiously. She appeared to be following him. He slowed down until he wasn't very far from her.
'Is there something I can do for you?' he inquired in his deep voice.

Re: The Five Stages
Come to think of it, that was a legitimate question. Why was she following this dragon? What was it that she thought she could do for him? Frankly she didn't owe him anything. Mir never was particularly kindhearted or sympathetic toward dragons. However, her conscience simply wouldn't leave her alone if she ignored someone who was in obvious distress.
Pardon me, dragon. I do not mean to seem intrusive and perhaps it is none of my business, but I can't help but notice that something seems to be wrong. If you are in any sort of trouble, I may be able to help.

Re: The Five Stages
A low hum of amusement emitted from Danuvaen's chest. It was a bitter, almost sarcastic sort of humor, but there was no derisive mentality to it. More than anything, the term that could best be applied to it is self-deprecating.
'While I admit that there is much troubling me at the moment, I do not think you would be able to help with the cause of it all,' he told her. At first he intended to leave it at that. But he had almost eaten this bird-lion, and she had still elected to offer her aid to him. That earned her more of an explanation.
When he spoke once more his voice was muted and subdued. 'I am a Riderless dragon. My partner-of-heart-and-mind was killed by the Varden. It was obviously an accident, but that does not undo what was done.' As he finished his explanation his voice turned bitter and angry, and he spat the word 'Varden' as though it was venom in his mouth.

Re: The Five Stages
Now it all made sense and Mir was more willing to forgive the dragon for his previous actions. Mirriana was familiar with the close bond Riders and dragons shared. Many a night had gone by where Reina would pine away, longing to be with her fallen dragon. Mirriana had tried to comfort her friend but there were just simply no words to take away the pain. In some ways it was better that Reina was dead now, reunited with her dragon once more.
I'm sorry... Mir said, sympathy in her voice. I was once friends with a Rider who had lost her dragon. I saw the pain that she went through every day. You have my deepest sympathies.

Re: The Five Stages
A long, deep sigh resonated in his chest. 'I thank you for your condolences. As I learn to cope with this my inclination to do irrational things will recede, of that I am certain. Trust that I will not attempt to attack a sentient being again... Of course, given that they have at least four legs and are not attacking me first.[/i]'
In his promise he left an opening so that he could still consume round-ear-two-legs. While he felt guilty for attacking the bird-lion, he had never felt guilt yet over eating a two-legs, besides when Fernir reprimanded him for it. Now that there was nothing to stop him he wasn't going to hold back for the sake of manners. Besides, the only reason dragons didn't still ravage the elven cities was the pact that allowed Riders; humans fell under the same pact in his eyes, and they had violated it by murdering his Rider. His bond with them was eternally damaged, and probably irrevocably broken.
Danuvaen spoke once more, wanting to alleviate the somewhat uncomfortable silence. 'I am going rather far north. If you wish to continue flying with me I will not be offended. However, I want you to be aware that I am going to the heart of the war zone and there will be many who are quick to lash out at a large dark-scaled dragon such as myself. I am often mistaken for Shruikan, and the Varden will not hesitate to discover whether I am or not. There are some who do in fact know who I am, and then we would run into even more trouble. Then there are the agents of the Empire who would want to subdue me and ferry me away to Uru'baen. I do not know what would become of you in the midst of this. So, as I said, you are more than welcome to continue flying with me; just know your personal risk.'

Re: The Five Stages
The Empire has no interest in my kind one way or the other. As for the Varden, they have done nothing to protect my people from the poachers and trophy hunters who thrive under the Empire's rule so I have no loyalty to them either. Mirriana explained.
Mirriana didn't mind going up north. Cold weather never bothered her before, seeing as how she had grown up in the Boer Mountains.
Besides, if we get into trouble, I know a few more tricks that could prove useful. she grinned.

Re: The Five Stages
Danuvaen felt a spark of interest at the fact that the bird-lion didn't have any sort of loyalty either for the Varden or the Empire. It was very rare to meet a sentient creature possessing emotions and linear thought that didn't affiliate themselves with either side. Not only that, but he couldn't deny that she was pleasant company. He would certainly not mind traveling with her for some time. Once they reached Uru'baen he feared she would express an aversion to his desired path, and at that point they would have to separate. But for now he would truly enjoy having the company.
'If we are going to remain in one another's company for a while it would perhaps be prudent to exchange names so that I have more to call you than bird-lion,' he rumbled in his deep voice. 'I am Danuvaen, son of Asteren.'

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana nodded when the dragon introduced himself. My name is Mirriana but most people just call em "Mir". the gryphon replied.
I suppose I'll travel with you then. It has been so long since I have had anyone to talk to.
He called her "bird-lion". Perhaps he was unfamiliar with her kind. It wouldn't surprise her and he wouldn't be the first. Oh, and I am a gryphon, by the way. she said.
Mir hoped that she could help this poor, lonely soul. He needed companionship, even if it was just temporary. No one should have to go through what he had suffered through, especially alone.

Re: The Five Stages
He committed her name to memory. Normally he was a more formal individual and he referred to everyone as their full name or their title, but in this case he believed he could stand to use her nickname. It was pleasantly short and it fit her.
Learning her species hadn't been Danuvaen's top priority, as curiosity wasn't one of his main attributes. However, upon discovering that she was a gryphon he nodded in mid-flight. 'I have never heard of your kind. That surprises me. I haven't received all the training one of my species perhaps should have, but I know the more abundant fauna. Pardon my asking and remember that if it is the case I know your pain, being that the remaining members of my species may be counted on one paw; but do you suffer from the same near-extinction as dragons do? Why is it that you don't associate with others of your kind?'

Re: The Five Stages
Mir shook her head. My kind do not often interact with other creatures. It seems like everyone we meet has some reason for wanting to kill us on sight even though we try to avoid hostilities. Gryphons are not endangered as dragons are. Still we rarely venture out of these mountains and prefer to keep to ourselves.
Mir sighed, thinking of her brother. She missed him so dearly...
The vile cretins who poach and hunt my people for sport have thrived under the Empire's rule. My family was murdered by such people. They killed my parents and my siblings, all except for my older brother, Fletcher, who they dragged off somewhere. I never saw him again. They tried to kill me too, but they failed.
Mir gestured to the odd line of white feathers on her neck and pulled them back, revealing the scar from where Agatha's men had slit her throat.

Re: The Five Stages
He growled deeply, expressing his sympathies. 'Dragons do not usually have natural foes, besides other dragons, though I can easily imagine how agonizing it must be to know that there are those who would murder you simply so that they may have a trophy. I certainly hunt, and I enjoy it. But my query becomes my dinner and I waste very little. There is so much that these humans will never understand.'
There was a trace of bitterness in his voice. As he flew on his tail flicked irritably, making his flight pattern a little complicated. His desire to devour entire cities of round-ear-two-legs was only growing more intense to the point where he didn't know how much longer his self control would hold out. The Feldunost would keep him full until tomorrow maybe, but then he'd have to hunt again, and he wouldn't mind a little snack before then.
'Do you have any qualms with creatures who eat humans?' he inquired. He supposed she'd earned his respect, so he wouldn't do it when she was watching if she didn't like it, but he was certainly still going to do it. Round-ear-two-legs didn't have enough natural enemies. They could use a dragon foe to remind them that without their technology, they're no better equipped to defend themselves than a wild ape.

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana was a bit taken aback when the dragon sked about eating humans. Gryphons had a strict moral code against eating a sentient being and to violate that was considered a heinous sin.
I am not particularly fond of humans but I do believe that all sentient life is sacred. I have met humans who were complete bastards but I have also met humans who were kind and benevolent toward me.
Mirriana paused and then looked at Danuvaen once more. And I would never harm a child, no matter their race. Nor would I orphan one by killing its parents. Having gone through that myself, I would not wish it upon my worst enemy. I don't like humans but I have never killed anyone who did not thoroughly deserve what was coming to them.
Mir flew onward, thinking back on her experiences. She remembered her run-in with Morzan and how terrifying that had been. She had met a lot of evil humans in her life and he was one of the worst, second only to the complete monster who took her family from her. Still, Mir knew they couldn't all be bad.

Re: The Five Stages
He rumbled almost silently at the knowledge that he would have to do it when her head was turned, but he would respect it.
'There are some that are good and there are some that are not,' he agreed. 'However, is it really any different from eating another creature capable of understanding its demise? A deer feels fear before I take its life. A steer struggles before finally submitting to death. All things know the fear of death and they experience self-preservation, but humans think themselves infallible. They act as though they are untouchable even when they so clearly are not. Through their entire miserably short life they act like hatchlings, destroying everything they touch without any regard for those they hurt. And even when they hurt someone most grievously, they expect no retaliation.' His lip curled upward in a snarl. 'It was an elf that dealt my Rider the fatal blow, but it was a human that decreed he would face no repercussion, being that "it was an accident." He slew one of four known Riders, one of the two that were aligned with the Varden, and he got away with nothing but a reprimand. No matter what it takes, I will find this elf alone and tear him to pieces.'
His vicious monologue would likely make Mir uneasy, and he wouldn't blame her. But he wanted her to know that he wasn't one of the members of his species that would stand silent and pensive as his life was torn apart, waiting instead for a reasonable way to come to a conclusion. No; he was a true dragon, one who craved to bathe his jaws in the blood of those who had wronged him so deeply. There was nothing that could make him change his mind and nothing, he was convinced, that was going to stop him.

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana sighed. If you are angry at the Varden then by all means, take your revenge. I don't blame you for your anger and I will not try to interfere if you wish to devour every single one of them. However, burning villages and killing innocent people will not solve anything. In fact, it will only make things worse. The Varden will blame Galbatorix for the deed and use it to rally behind. Galbatorix will blame the Varden and use it as an excuse to continue this foolish war. It will just lead to more pointless killing. Both sides have attacked my kind for not wanting a part in this war and frankly I just wish it would end. I think both sides are wrong. Galbatorix is a monster and the Varden are nothing more than a bunch of terrorists masquerading as freedom fighters.
Mirriana suddenly had an idea. She hated herself for thinking about such things, but if Danuvaen was dead set on human flesh, she would rather see him go after a military target than civilians. During Mirriana's brief time with the Varden, she had learned the locations of several camps and bases.
What if I told you that I know about a Varden training camp and a supply depot? Go after them instead. It is only lightly defended and should not be much trouble for someone like you. There is simply no honor in killing civilians who can't protect themselves though.

Re: The Five Stages
Danuvaen stirred excitedly. 'That would be entirely too perfect. While I do not have any reservations with targeting civilians I would far prefer to turn my attention and energy to those who deserve it.'
As he fell back a little to let her lead he distantly contemplated the way Mir had described the Varden. He had never heard it put that way, being that he had only been surrounded by those who aligned themselves with the Varden in the past. But he supposed she was right. Galbatorix was indeed wrong. The way he had enslaved and murdered Danuvaen's kin was unforgivable. However, fawning over the Varden was no better. They had turned Saphira into a compliant soldier, something he had come to resent. And he knew Nasuada wasn't focused on the good of the Riders and their dragons. She cared mostly for the outcome concerning her humans. He snorted and then finally spoke.
'I don't believe there is any way you and I can have a true impact on the outcome of the war without giving up our own lives, but I could certainly stand to cause some complications for both sides.'

Re: The Five Stages
This way... the gryphon said, changing direction and flying toward west. It is quite some distance to where we are going. The base is near the great desert. Mirriana explained.
She truly felt horrible for what she was about to do, unleashing this massive dragon on those soldiers, but she would rather it be armed soldiers than women and children.
The hours seemed to drag by until finally they were out of the mountains. The dry, barren desert lay ahead of them. Finally as nightfall approached, the torches and fires of the Varden camp came into view.
There it is. Mirriana said. Now if you'll excuse me, I am going off to hunt. I'll be waiting on that ridge over there.
The gryphon banked away, not wanting to hang around and witness the carnage.

Re: The Five Stages
Danuvaen followed Mir's lead with a mounting sense of excitement. Though not every member of the Varden was guilty for what had happened they were guilty of following Nasuada, and he blamed her significantly. Anyone who trusted in her and obeyed her deserved to be devoured mercilessly.
When they reached the little glowing spot on the terrain that was the Varden camp Danuvaen projected his gratitude to Mir instead of speaking. As soon as she was out of sigh he dove to the ground quickly, an invisible blur against the night sky. They didn't see him coming until it was too late. Danuvaen landed in the heart of the camp with a resounding thud and snapped up the human directly in front of him before anyone could stop him. Screams of surprise and terror could be heard as the soldiers scrambled to get away from him. As they distanced themselves some drew swords and prepared to fight, but most of them kept running. Those were the wise ones; how could these humans think they stood a chance against him?
With a primal roar he charged those that remained and, dodging a few slashes from their swords, he caught one of the soldiers under one of his great paws. Bone and flesh flattened under his weight and he curled his lip up in distaste. He wouldn't eat this one.
The carnage carried on. Danuvaen snapped, clawed, flattened men with his tail, and burnt several with his flame. One after another they all fell or were eaten. After what must have been at least half an hour a blood soaked Danuvaen found the very last surviving soldier. Instead of eating him, however, he nudged his consciousness against the petrified man.
'Run and tell Nasuada that she has made an enemy for life. For as long as she lives she will never escape me. Unless she steps down I will continue to savage these camps until not one remain. What would she prefer? Political strength and the blood of many of her men soaked into the ground, or nothingness? Tell her to choose wisely.'
With that he took to the skies once more. There was a satisfying weight in his belly but the blood drying on his scales was uncomfortable. He landed on the ridge Mir had singled out and began licking his scales with his barbed tongue. Though he would be unable to reach some of the spots he would get most of it now while he waited.

Re: The Five Stages
Mirriana returned from her hunt and saw that Danuvaen had finished his dirty work. She could smell the blood and smoke from the burning camp was visible in the distance.
The gryphon secretly hid her disgust, both at Danuvaen's actions and at herself for allowing it to happen. Of course, there was nothing she could have done to stop him. But still, Mir felt guilty for what she had done. At least whatever town he would have ravaged had been spared though.
May the Great Gryphon Gods forgive me for this... she said to herself.
What now? she said to the dragon.

Re: The Five Stages
Though she made attempts to hide it Danuvaen could tell that Mir did not approve of what he had done.
'You think I was wrong to do this?' he inquired as he stood. It wasn't so much a question as it was him pointing out that he could sense her reproach. 'These men were not innocent, not by far. Their deaths will make the world a cleaner, purer place.'
More important than the morality of what he'd just done was their destination. He ruffled his wings and looked to the horizon. 'Do you have anywhere else you would like to visit? If not I would like to continue north.'

Re: The Five Stages
Not necessarily. Mir replied. I just do not like the fact that I had a hand in it. My brother would not have approved.
Mirriana knew that Fletcher would be disappointed had he known what she had done. Still, she had no choice. If Fletcher were here, he probably would have stood a better chance against this dragon in a fight. Mir, however, was just not strong enough to fight such creatures, especially when they were as big as Danuvaen.
I can accompany you as far as the capitol if you wish, but that is as far as I can go. I do not wish to associate why Galbatorix.
