Into the sands

He went up to Phalyns, because she seemed easier to try to wake than Braith. He then began to try to wake her up. He began to scream, anythign to wake them up. It didn't liik like it would work. He began to think, then he remembered. He knew that it would still be a whiel before Phalynx woke up and Braith was still far to tired to even move. Shadow beasts lurked in the cracks underneath the larger slabs of sandstone, but they did not venture into the sunlight. The desert sun was fierce, too fierce for them. They would be too weak to fight the rider. The rumbling grew more fierce until the ground was shaking, and at the edge of the pile of collapsed sandstone, a great hole opened up. The cavern under the sand was collapsing, and most of the tunnel leading to it. Luckily, it was on the side of the huge upper chamber, so the hole did not grow big enough to swallow the two dragons at the center. They had until sunset to move or wake up. Gender: Guy Affiliation: Werecats	Re: Into the sands Voenth watched as the land around them broke apart and as th shadow beasts raced under everything they could find to hide from the sun. He would every once in a while throw a ball oflight under a rock and watch as the shadow beasts fried in the sun when they ran. It was like being back in her egg, but fast-forwarded: first she could hear things, like the scuttling shadow beasts and Voenth's breathing. Then, she opened her eyes. Her vision filled with the light of day, and adjusted to the brightness. Voenth. Braith. You did it, she murmured weakly, raising her head a little to look around. I'm guessing Braith couldn't make it any farther than this? she said, finding him unconscious. We could leave with the sun, or we could hunt out as many as we can now. With my sight I will be able to see where they are hiding, Phal said. Though she was still exhausted, and only just recovering her strength, she wanted to take advantage of the situation. But as she tried to rise, her legs gave out, and she collapsed back to the ground. She grunted as she tried to get up again, but she was simply too weak to rise to her full height. I can't... I'm too tired to get up. It looks like I'll have to wait, she said with a disappointed sigh. If we are both awake, and worst does come to worst, then Braith or I will simply pick you up and carry you away. The shadow beasts cannot fly, after all, Phal said with a smile. Phal eyed the shadow beasts as they crept around in the darkness, waiting for their chance to strike. She glanced at Braith as he stirred. Everyone is alright, Braith. We're waiting for you to recover so that we can find a safe place to regain our strength. And then we will finish these things. Said Voenth, not really paying attention to the silver dragoness, he was too intently focused upon the Sun as is sunk beneath the sands on the horison. He said silently to himself, "And so it begins." He drew Let'hjartha and Rathur'gata and prepaired to fight. Oh, boy, just wake up and I hear about how I left my rider and friend practically defencless against hoards of shadow beasts. Said Braith as he got up and stood. He was shakey, but it was better than laying down and looking like some weakling. Defenseless? Fighting dark creatures is my specialty. And I knew I'd wake up before dark, so all is well, she stated with a grin. Phal stood up as the sun sank. She watched it until the last sliver of red light was blocked out by the planet's curve. As soon as the light of the sun was gone, Phal's scales flared up and lit their twilit surroundings in silver. They draw closer. I will keep them away until you are ready to fly, Braith, Phal spoke as she eyed the dark forms slipping around beyond the edges of her light. One of them drew too close for comfort, and Phal sent a small silver fireball hurtling towards it. Very funny, just remember, I still have the strength to throw you back down this hole. Said Braith as he launched himself into the air and wheeled while waiting on Phalynx. He blasted the cavern with a huge fire ball, causing the entire cavern to light up as if it was day. All but one hit their targets and destroyed them. She grinned as she felt the wind of Braith's wingbeats, and flapped up into the sky to join him. She sent out three last blasts of starfire before joining Braith in the air above the desert. Where would you like to go to rest in safety? she asked. She wouldn't need to sleep for a while, and was feeling almost completely rested. Phalynx flapped ahead of the pair and circled around a tall red rock spire, waiting for them. Go on ahead to the mountains. I will wait here and watch for the shadow beasts. Meet me back here in the morning, when you are ready to fight again. I will warn you if the shadow beasts pass this spot, she said. He got up and stretched, thankful to know that both he and Braith had survuved the horrible ordeal. He walked over to the slumbering dragon and lightly kicked him on the arm. He said, "Wake up, you great lump." Jokingly and soon were on their way to where Phalynx had stayed the night to watch the progress of the shadow beasts. Braith was wakened very rudly, he was kicked and called a "great lump" which annoyed him greatly, but when he saw the smile on Voenth's face, he knew it was a joke. Soon after, he flew very stiffly from their small cave to the out-crop that Phalynx had stayed on. She sat catlike, claws tucked under her body, wings folded tightly, and head raised in an alert position. The only moving part of her body was the slow rise and fall of her chest as she breathed and her bright green eyes, darting over the desert as they scanned the horizon. The shadow beasts gathered and began moving, though slowly. Phal could tell that they were heading for her rocky outcropping in the hopes of another place of shelter during the day. As the night passed, they drew in closer still. Phal left her perch only once in the entire night to catch a gazelle, which she ate quickly. The whole time she kept an eye on the dark patch of creatures in the distance. When the sky finally lightened, they were close enough to have noticed her, but not close enough to reach her. As the sun rose, they all hid near the rocky outcropping a little farther south than Phal's spire. She turned her head when she heard approaching wingbeats, and smiled in greeting to Braith and Voenth. Welcome back. We are lucky, I think. These shadow beasts seem to be a little flawed; they are much more sensitive to sunlight than normal. Normal shadow beasts would only be a little annoyed, she noted, motioning with her tail to where they were hiding under the large rocks and cliffs about a quarter mile to the south. Phal knew that most shadow beasts that tried to enter their world from the Shadow Realm were altered in the process of crossing. That was why most had a more physical aspect and could be killed like normal creatures, and why these ones were so sensitive to sunlight. The ones that dwelled in the Realm itself were much more powerful, and much more terrifying. Yes, most are of the shadowy variety, but something happened to make them especially sensitive to light. We can use that to our advantage, she said quietly. She then lifted her tail so that Voenth could see where it was pointing. They are hiding among those rocks, about a quarter mile to the south, she said, nodding her head towards the shadows near the base of the rocky outcropping. They will scatter all over Alagesia and we cannot let that happen. They are not like Galbatorix, they are worse, because they will eventually find a weak spot and open another portal to the shadows and every shade in the land will start attacking, then ... we will be lucky to survive, much less win." Said Voenth in almost a propheticial(sp) way. OOC: OOO, Voenth has become a prophet(sp), lolz. IC: Braith simply roared angrily and said, Let it be done and us be finished! She knew that what Voenth had said was true, but she also knew that the worst was yet to come. Should I warn him? Yes, but after we kill these shadow beasts, she thought. She was, of course, thinking of the dream she had recieved years ago, that warned of a great war against the shadow. She had also recieved the number of years left between that day and the war. Those years were almost halfway up. Phal trumpeted out a challenging call along with Braith, and the two dragons caught the attention of the shadow beasts. She took flight with a graceful swoop off of her perch, and shot past Braith, her silver scales giving her the appearance of a comet as she flew. Phal reached the clump of dark creatures in seconds and the blast of her silver flame lit the landscape in a strange white glow for a moment. Not yet. He formed it and made it so, that when it hit the ground, it would shatter and kill any shadow beasts in the area, then he saw somethign that made his stomath lurch. A huge shadow beast, larger than Braith ad Phalnx together was charging toward them. It had huge tentacles, at least three feet wide and probably thirty feet long. He immediately threw the ball of light at it. It hit it in the face, but looked like it had no effect. He said, "This will be tougher than I thought." Braith blasted the shadows hat tried to leap up on him to attack Voenth, when he saw the homsterous tshadow beast. He warned Phalynx, then flew high into the air. She dove at the shadow beast, making it screech and turn its head away as she flew at its face. Phal scratched and spit starfire at its face to distract it, for she had noticed Braith flying in at its back. She sent missiles of starry flame at the tentacles that slashed wildly at her wings, and smacked one away with her tail. Phal hissed, struggling to get as close as she dared to the thing's monstrous face. Its attention was now torn between one dragon in front, and one above it. Braith was scoring several hits with his large claws down the beast's back, but it was still too large to be taken down easily. Phal darted bravely forward, dodging teeth and tentacles, and raked all of her claws down the monster's face, taking out its eyes. She then kicked herself off and blasted a huge gust of starfire right at it. The shadow beast howled and tore at its face, and its tentacles thrashed wildly. Phal knew she couldn't avoid them in that state, and so tried to fly out of reach. Before she could escape, one of the smaller tentacles wrapped itself around her tail and flung her roughly away, towards the desert ground. Phal snapped her wings shut and hit the ground rolling. She suddenly felt the pain diminish until it was just a dull soreness, and opened her eyes to see the magic chain dissipate from around Voenth. Thank you, she said briefly, recovering and flying back towards them. Braith was suddenly gripped around the middle by one of the shadow beast's thrashing tentacles, and Phal arrived in time to break it from the creature's body with a starfire missile. She turned her body and aimed for the creature's head, giving it another good-sized blast of starfire. The shadow beast continued to shriek in pain, its whole body thrashing around as it was gravely injured. She continued sending silvery fireballs down on the beast to finish it off. Braith and Voenth left the skirmish with the giant one to fight the army of smaller shadow beasts, but Phal decided to finish it. She didn't want to make the mistake of thinking it defeated only to have it attack one of her friends. Finally, the giant shadow beast gave an agonized groan and fell to its side. The shadows that made up its body dissipated into the winds and dissolved, unable to keep their shape as a living being. A shining mist, poisonous to the shadow beasts, spread over the desert ground, causing the shadow beasts in the thick of it to keel over, dying. The ones on the edges howled in pain and attempted to escape, some more successfully than others. Phal traced the spell to Voenth, who had fallen over because of the energy drain. Braith had fallen from the sky nearby, also exhausted. Phal knew they were safe for the moment because of the mist, so she flew around the edges and blasted a continuous stream of starfire around the shadow beasts in a circle, killing the ones attempting to escape. When her circuit was completed, she raced over to her friends. Phal landed beside Braith and transferred some of her energy to the large dragon, and then gave a little to Voenth as well. Are you two alright? You should be more careful, Voenth. It's a good thing those shadow beasts weren't covering a larger area, or you might have killed yourself, she spoke, shaking her head. Phal whipped her body around, but not fast enough to meet her attacker as he tackled into her. Phal's breath was knocked out of her body with the impact and her wings snapped shut as she fell to the ground. She slammed into the sand and cried out in pain as she felt a rib snap. Phal looked up with glaring eyes of green fire, knowing who was up there. Rigel's yellow eyes glinted coldly as he looked down on his enemy. He had known of Phalynx's existence outside her egg for over twenty years now, and he had still not been able to kill her. No matter what he did, it seemed she was always able to escape or defeat him. She would have to try, though. She stood up shakily, getting her breath back. You can't defeat me, Rigel. I will continue to fight you for as long as you ally yourself with the darkness, she cried, trying to distract him from attacking until she could recover. Rigel's eyes narrowed; he knew she was trying to distract him. However, he couldn't resist replying. One day, little dragon, I will kill you. Whether or not this is that day, it will come. There is no escaping, he screeched back angrily, and dove. Phal rolled out of the way, and was almost too slow to avoid Rigel's claws. Her broken rib was slowing her down. The phoenix screeched again and flapped towards her. Phal leapt into the air and flew over him, racing a short distance away before turning around. Rigel was already there, moving to claw at her again. She sent a few starfire missiles at the phoenix to get him off course, and dove down and underneath him as he was avoiding the silver projectiles. As Rigel flipped upside down to avoid one of them, Phal reached up with her claws and scratched at his back. Feathers and blood came out in her talons, causing Rigel to screech angrily again. He flipped himself over and snapped at Phal's neck with his deadly sharp beak. Phal ducked down, but not far enough to avoid getting cut along the top of her shoulders. He silently cursed as Phalynx used the opportunity to gain some space between them. He flew at her again, flashing out his talons ferociously at the dragon's silver-scaled sides. Phalynx twisted herself out of reach and bit down on Rigel's leg. He hissed in pain and slashed at her with his other foot, catching her lightly across the neck. Phal released Rigel with a grunt of pain. As he was coming at her again, a blast of fire, Braith's light-altered flame, caused the phoenix to dodge out of the way yet again. Phal hurled herself at him and scratched at his left wing, and then flew out of range again. She turned her neck towards him and sent a few silvery fireballs at Rigel. Flattened shields of blue-white fire rose up from the air to block Phal's fireballs, and blocked her view of the phoenix behind them as well. The hotter flames evaporated the water into nothing more than a cloud of steam. Phal, however, used the distraction. She broke through Rigel's fire shields herself and raised her claws, slashing them down his shoulders. The phoenix screeched and flung himself away, but not before stabbing Phal lightly in return with his razor-sharp beak. Rigel seethed in fury as the orange dragon moved himself towards the fighters. Outnumbered I may be, but I am not outmatched, he hissed, deciding not to reveal that he was capable of using some magic. Rigel flew higher in the air and muttered a few words in the Ancient Language. The heat of his own fire moved over the desert sands beneath, eventually causing updrafts so strong that massive gusts of sand were blown upwards, creating a small sandstorm around the orange dragon and his rider. He felt the small drain of energy, but the strong desert sunlight would soon replenish him. Never knew that, guess I'll use it now. IC: Voenth watched as a large sandstorm appeared around them. He knew that there was nothing left for it. He focused his energy and began his transformation into a wolf. His swords disappeared and became his claws, his hair grew longer and all over his body. He howled loudly and leapt through the sandstorm. The wind whipped him around for a time, and threw him back several yards, but luckily it threw him out of the vortex. He growled deeply and attacked the phoenix. Braith growled deeply, and allowed his anger to grow. It grew and grew, until it was so great ... he could no longer contain it. His every breath became a flame and his eyes became a deep red. He allowed the flame to cover his body, his anger was so great, that his tiredness dissappeared. He opened his huge wings, full of adrenaline(sp) and feeling as fresh as if he had never fought. He flew through the sandstorm and craches into the phoenix. Maybe that's a hint you have too many charries? lol jk jk IC: Rigel stopped his dive at Phalynx when he noticed a wolf and a fury-charged dragon both flying at him at once. Sneering, he flapped up higher to avoid the wolf, and then moved himself behind the silver so that she was in the way of the enraged red. Phalynx twisted herself around, still agile despite her injuries, and came at him once more. The phoenix stretched out his talons to meet her attack and the two grappled for a while with claws outstretched. Though Phal had four taloned feet to Rigel's two, she was smaller in size than the huge bird. She finally realized that scratching with her claws like this would get her nowhere, and twisted herself around to whip Rigel away with her powerful tail. Though doing so briefly exposed her side, the phoenix wasn't ready for it and was flung roughly away. Phal flew further to the side and made another return loop, coming in towards Rigel's wing. Braith now had a clear shot at him as well. Cursing the creature, he muttered a spell under his breath that sent a powerful downdraft hurtling towards the large dragon. Knowing that he was a relatively weak flyer, Rigel knew the downdraft would at least knock him down to near the ground, if not cause him to crash into it. He could not change how lopsided his flying had become, though, because of the missing feathers. Suddenly, he felt something crash into him from behind, and flew up to escape the starry one. Phalynx was a clever fighter, always trying to take advantage of the smallest opportunities. It would make her all the more difficult to kill. Phal rushed up after Rigel, baring her teeth. Her eyes still gleamed like angry flames, ready to consume her enemy. Rigel had always managed to get away, but she was always determined to defeat him once and for all. Knowing he was a phoenix, Phal realized that he would be extremely difficult to kill. Perhaps there was a way to trap him, though. Perhaps she could trap him in the Shadow Realms. There was no light there, which meant no energy for the phoenix. He would have to constantly regenerate himself, and he would be trapped for a very long time, too weak to get out himself. Phal decided she would think more on the matter once she had gotten rid of Rigel in this fight. Gender: Guy Affiliation: Werecats	Re: Into the sands Anthor continued to chant his spell, he watched as what looked like snow fell, in reality, it was a mist, so light, so faint that it was barely visible, but the mist contained in it a small amount of sleep spell. He watched as the mist fell all over the clearing, on Braith, Riel, Phalynx, even himself. He was tired, but not yet done. Braith crashed into the ground when the wind hit him. He could sense some sort of magic being used; it made his wings droop and his mind feel foggy. Determined not to succumb to it, he summoned another gust of wind, this time a magic wind, to blow some of the sleeping mist away. At the same time, he continued to fly higher, still trying to lure Phalynx into the sky. Eventually they would be beyond the range of that large male dragon, and alone in their fight. Phal could see the magical mist that Voenth was summoning, but Rigel was rising too fast and she couldn't strengthen the spell and attach it to him. Because of her abilities, she was able to avoid the effects of the spell. She followed Rigel higher and higher, knowing that if they got too high they would be alone, but not caring. The evil phoenix had to be dealt with, whether it put her life in jeopardy or not. OOC: I was thinking final face-off between Phal and Rigel high up in the sky above the ozone layer, and then they'd come back down for some reason and Phal would use Voenth's sleeping mist on Rigel. IC: Rigel continued to fly higher and higher into the sky, swooping down to attack Phalynx, but always flapping away again. The silver dragon kept following him, dashing at him to attack in return. Clouds swirled around them in the eddies stirred from their wingbeats, violently churning as the two creatures fought. Rigel used his magic to condense some of the vapor into razor sharp ice crystals, and sent them shooting towards Phalynx. She was forced to fly higher to avoid them, right towards the phoenix. Phal narrowed her eyes, arrowing her body towards him as he continued gaining altitude. She caught up to him and twisted her body upside-down to lash out at him with extended talons. Rigel flapped higher to avoid them, but not before being slashed across one of his legs. He shrieked angrily and sped a short distance away. Phal flipped herself over and flew up again. She realized with a glance that they were above most of the clouds. Only the trailing, whispy ones were left above them. She knew that Rigel was trying to isolate their fight in the upper regions of the atmosphere, higher than anyone else could go; higher than her friends could go if she was in trouble. Phal knew she could handle a fight in the air, though. Small tendrels of magic dissiparing some feet above the dying beast. He moved from that one to another, determined to eliminate this threat forever. Braith used his large claws to rip apart yet another shadow beast, then he began to make a large flame of white fire and used it upon the beasts. She kept right after the phoenix, clawing and snapping at him, as he lashed down with his talons. All the while she was blasting starfire and Rigel was using magic to attack. Their hits grew closer and closer together, until there was no time to deflect them. Phal was forced to avoid Rigel's magic and claws as best as she could while trying to get to him. She realized, when the amount of ultraviolet light in her vision intensified, that they had passed into the uppermost reaches of her range. They were truly alone in their fight, now. Rigel returned Phalynx's attacks, blow-for-blow, while at the same time spoke swiftly under his breath to cast a multitude of spells. They were small spells, however; not enough to cause much damage to his opponent. There were other purposes he had in mind for this encounter, too. Other purposes that he would enjoy greatly. He screeched as the dragon's claws managed to score down his side, and raised a shield of fire to give himself a brief respite. Phalynx didn't know what was coming for her, but she would soon find out. OOC: I think this'll be settled in one or two more posts. He sat down, exhausted from the long battles of the past few days, and began to ecite an old elven poem about the sea. When the last of the shadow beasts were gone, Braith landed next to Voenth and lay down. His muscles quivering from the long flights and battles. He was fighting like a crazed chicken, completely oblivious to his own safety as he struck again and again. However, he had a plan behind the reckless strikes, and he knew he would live through this. The dragon desperately tried to attack him with her natural weapons and her starfire, but his own fireshields were still in effect, and would be for a few more minutes. He had that long to tire her out. Phal knew there was some motive behind this attack, some purpose to his crazed attack. But she had no time to think what it was, only just enough to respond to his blows. She couldn't get a hit in of her own, only defend herself. But his attacks kept getting faster and faster. It seemed he knew this was going to end soon, for he was using up all of his energy rapidly. Even this amount of radiation wouldn't keep him strong at that pace. She was more tired though, from the fighting and the powerful gamma ray pulse she had used that was still affecting her, and Rigel knew it. Her defense grew weaker and weaker, and finally she slipped up. Rigel saw the mistake as soon as Phal had realized she had made it, and took advantage of it even faster. He lashed out with his talons and hooked them straight into the dragon's ribs, making sure to pierce them in deeply enough so that she couldn't wrench herself away. She let out a gasp of pain and went rigid with the shock of the deep blow. Rigel hissed in triumph, his eyes narrowing. He pulled his claw forward until he was looking right into Phalynx's eyes. I know... there's a reason, Phal hissed through gritted teeth. Why, yes, yes there is, little dragon. I just wanted to tell you that I know. Know... what? I know that in twenty or so years, the Shadow Realms will make its greatest attempt yet on this world. A great war will be fought, and you do not yet know the outcome. Oh no... Phal said quietly, realizing that Rigel possessing this knowledge could only end badly. Oh yes. And I wanted to inform you that I plan to do everything in my power to aide the Shadows on their quest for dominion of this world, for it will mean your death, and the death of all dragons. You know what I can do, and what it means that I am helping them. Good luck, little dragon, Rigel said at last, a wide smile spreading across his his face. With that, he jerked his claws fiercely from Phalynx's side, and flapped away from the battle site. Phal's wings drooped, blood pouring down her side and leaving bright red streaks across silver. She went into an exhausted glide, knowing she wouldn't be able to pull herself out of a faster dive. She knew that Rigel was very skilled in dark magic, and he possessed abilities and power that would be a huge aide for the Shadow Realms in this world. He could even end up being the one to open their largest and most threatening portal when the war began. Phal realized that the ground was rushing up too quickly, and barely curved her wings in time to keep herself from crashing. She managed to land correctly, but her legs buckled under her and she grunted in pain. He and Braith began to run toward the small silver. When they reached her, she was on the ground, examining her wounds. Voenth said, "Hold on, I can heal it." and murmered, "Waíse heill!" and watched as the largest of Phalynx's wounds closed up. Voenth's face went pale and his hands began to tremble, but when it was done, he gave the others a reassuring smile. He said, "Well, I think it is over, what happened, how did Rigel best you?" Braith glided over to Phalynx and roared angrily at the retreating figure of Rigel. Rigel had not wanted her to forget this encounter. She sighed when Voenth asked what had happened. In a way... he knew I was exhausted, so he used a strategy of flurried, beserk attacks. He'll probably have to regenerate now; I left some bad wounds on him too; but he got what he wanted out of the fight, she replied sadly. She didn't want to dampen her friends spirits with more bad news, that they now had a powerful enemy on the side of the Shadow Realms' future war. Of course Rigel would have joined their side when the war began, but to know he would help to instigate it? He knows that the Shadow Realms are going to start a war about twenty years from now. He told me he's going to help to start it. I knew he would side with them... but now I know he's going to be one cause of the war... she continued sadly, shaking her head. Rigel has dark powers, strong enough to be a huge ally to the darkness. Just another worry to add to my list. Phal laughed darkly. Her list of concerns was ever-growing. She didn't mention her other fears, though. Rigel was the only evildoer who knew with certainty that there would be a war. And he knew because of Phalynx. Would it even start if he didn't involve himself? It was a question not worth thinking about, she knew, but she couldn't help it. It would be a long flight back. I'm glad you were able to finish up those shadow beasts. Will you be alright in your journey home? she asked, sure they would reply in the affirmative. When they replied, Phal glanced back to the sky, wondering how she could be ready to rejoin the clouds so soon. She turned back to her friends with a smile. I suppose there's nothing more to do here, and we all have things we must return to. I will see you both again quite soon, though, she said, more happiness in her voice. The threat of war and attack was still a long way off in the future, and for now she could look forward to traveling and meeting up with friends along the way. Friends such as Voenth and Braith. He slowly walked over to Braith and climbed up onto the saddle and said, "Well, that was a nice vacation from adventure, I guess it is time we went back to the isle and see how Anthor, Gornath and the others are. Lets leave." said the elf as the large orange dragon raised its head and roared to the skies. Braith allowed Voenth to climb up on his back, then roared loud, long, and clear.
