My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Anyone else watch this show? I find its colorful art style and positive messages quite charming. This is easily one of my favorite shows on television today.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
And even considering that you are a guy it isn't surprising. This show is viral across the world and has gained a surprisingly large demographic of male teens.
The show I know is written by Lauren Faust, who helped write Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, but her greatest achievement was obviously Iron Giant. All memorable shows from my childhood, and I do admit, I watched a few episodes of MLP to see what the hype was about. It reminded me much of these older cartoons, and although it appears to be aimed at young girls and many would assume at first that this show is childish, it is surprisingly enjoyable.
I don't watch any more than I have already seen, both because I'm not obsessed and I don't want to be caught by younger siblings who would easily take advantage of me with it, but I do enjoy the show and think it's very creative.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
I agree. I wouldn't consider myself obsessed, either, but I have seen all of the episodes and keep up with the show as it airs weekly.
The show is very similar to the shows from my childhood, and from what I've seen of most cartoons today, that is a good thing. The show demonstrates a surprising amount of depth, as well as clean humor and a good moral basis.
I'm curious: why or how would your younger siblings take advantage of you with it?
And by the way, what are the few episodes you have seen?

I've only seen the first four or five episodes. And trust me, when you're the eldest of four brothers, everything you do has to be taken with caution. One of my brothers especially likes to make fun of me and/or blackmail me, so if he sees me watching a "girl show" then he will never let me live that down.

That's too bad. My younger brother is only two years younger than me, so he never gave me a hard time about it. In fact, since I liked it, have gave it a try and now he watches it as well.
I've never had a problem with people being negative towards me because I watch the show. I've never even had an incident when I wear my Brony/Rainbow Dash shirt. I try not to care what people think about me liking it. I enjoy it, so I try to focus on that and have that be all that matters to me.

Well, I've watched now to episode 20, and I have to say, I'm enjoying it far more. One of the interesting things that I noticed is how well that they go into the psyches of the characters themselves. Yet at the same time, it's scary as to how creepy, or downright terrifying some of them can be when they mentally breakdown into what some MLP fans call "Cutie Mark Deprivation Syndrome."
And I also know what happens to Twilight in season 2, and I have never looked at her the same way again. This definitely has the spirit of a 90's show. . .

The focus on character development is one of the best aspects of the show.
Are you talking about when she freaks about not mailing her letter to Princess Celestia on time?
And yes, it definitely feels a lot like some of the older cartoons.

Yeah, I'm talking about that. However, Pinkie Pie's insanity episode is a close second.

I don't think that "insanity" is what they were going for. I think they were going for laughs, and for me, they succeeded.
For the morals of both episodes, they wanted somepony to freak out and the others to react. They just exaggerated the freak out on both claims.

Well, I think both for laughs and to give each character depth. I think that Faust studied up on real personality disorders because every pony seems to have one, and when they do not get what they want, then it paves the way for both an interesting, albeit unstable emotional reaction that provides an entertaining plot and a good moral at the same time.
The only relatively sane characters in the series are Apple Jack and Celestia, but AJ is still a heavy workaholic which is borderline Obsessive Compulsive. I'm growing to love Celestia's character the most now, just because although she's patient and understanding, she knows she has the power to do whatever she wants, so she tries to get as much fun out of whatever she does.

I'm not sure that each of them is based on a personality disorder, but I can see where you're coming from.
Celestia's a good pony. I'm not really sure who my favorite pony is.
Do you keep current on the show? Did you see today's episode, Hearts and Hooves Day?

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
I've actually turned full on brony and have even converted two friends as well. I've seen Hearts and Hooves day, and I have to say, the creators really like messing will all the shippers.
I saw Derpy getting with Dr. Whooves on a bridge in the background. That made me laugh the hardest, both because it's two of the fan-influenced characters getting together and there is already a well known fan audio story series about them called Dr. Whooves and Assistant. Look it up on youtube, it's quite funny.
Probably the greatest thing that I've come across while browsing around in the fandom is the music. For some strange reason, brony-made music, no matter what genre, is 20% cooler. That is a fact. Look up stuff from AcousticBrony, MandoBrony, or WoodenToaster. They have some really good songs.
And the worst thing that I've seen is the fanfictions. Never, and I mean never read Cupcakes or Rainbow Factory if you hold any respect towards Pinkie and Rainbow. . . I learned that the hard way. Rocket to Insanity, an unofficial sequel to Cupcakes was dark, and quite disturbing unless you read it with the alternate ending, which makes it infinitely better to read. Yet now because of it I get chills of fear when I see Pinkie in her "Pinkamina" stage, Rainbows are now disgusting to me, and I now want Cloudsdale to burn to the ground. Trust me, they will mess you up.

That's good. It's a great show.
Haha, I didn't notice that. I think I noticed Doctor Whooves in the song where they were looking for Cherrilee's very special somepony.
I have heard a little bit of brony music, and it's pretty cool.
The only fanfiction I read is My Little Dashie, which I thought was pretty good. I usually don't read fanfiction as much when shows are airing. I use it inbetween seasons or after it's over to keep the show alive.
Wow, it looks like you've become a way bigger fan than me, haha.

Just watch the first episode on youtube. It's kind of what I was expecting . Already knew the characters.
If any of you ever get to the point that go to conventions pm me about it.

The first episode is okay, but frankly it isn't as good as the rest of the series. Which is why bronies usually give the "5 episode challenge" considering that it takes about 5 episodes to give you a better idea of what to expect from the show.
Even if I wanted to go to Bronycon, I don't have the resources to go.
It is now final, Celestia is best pony.

Oups, I didn't think that there was an actual MLP convention. Well in that case I should probably tell you to look around since fans of MLP do get around at other conventions at well. The only thing is that there does not seem to be any around your state.
This is a newer fandom that is still in it's infancy.

Actually, no, it's far bigger than you realize. There are supposedly well over a million bronies out there, and possibly many more who won't admit it. It's a huge craze both on the internet and IRL, spreading around the world.
There are probably a lot of fans here in my state. They just might be hard to find or still in the closet.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
I can understand completely. I accidentally turned my friends into bronies, but not only that, they became so obsessed that I had to keep them at bay to the best of my ability.
Fortunately their obsession died down to normal levels after they finally caught up with all the episodes.
Hint of warning to any bronies, keep away from fanfictions if you're emotionally sensitive. Some of them are simply so horrific that they are traumatizing both emotionally and mentally. I'll never look at cupcakes and rainbows the same way after I read the two more popular ones. But then the rest are so touching that it gives you tears. I just read this really short one last night that made me literally cry. It was about Pinkie Pie shattering the fourth wall at the end of the very last episode of MLP just to say goodbye and thanks for the memories. Man was that a sad moment. But it will stick with me forever, I wager.
If the creators ever caught wind of that and actually did it, then that would be considered one of the most emotional things ever to be seen on television.

Well it is a very dangerous tool that has to be used with care . I can see it turning a large percentage of people that may watch it.
I would presonally consider myself immune to it since I already consider myself to be part of the greater community that the bronies share. For me it's just another anthropomorphic television series of which I already watch many of. We will conquer the world

My mother is one of those people madly in love with this show XD She started watching it a few months ago, and only stopped when we turned off cable
I absolutely hated it at first, but would usually watch it with her because it came on early in the morning and I couldn't be bothered to get out of bed in order to escape it. But, I will admit, the show has made me laugh out loud a fair amount of times ^;^ The pink one, especially, is hilarious. She acts like my cousin. My thirty-something year old cousin

I wonder what will happen when she finds out she can watch the entire series on youtube?
The humor is one thing that I've found they've kept fresh for the most part. Good mix of direct and subtle comedy to keep things from being repetitive. And if you get deeper into the community, the reactions of fellow fans also can be quite entertaining.
Also, I recently took an obsession test to see how much I am a fan of MLP. I got 60/100, which is a very high score according to the results. And it's only going to go higher after I post a fanfiction that I'm planning right now. Yeah, I'm a hardcore brony now.

Well thanks. I was actually already looking into the show when you did post this though. Though I think that the episode is on Friday. I don't know. . . I know that they're changing the schedule.
Also, today is Derpy Day, a day devoted entirely to Derpy Hooves created to honor her after the uproar that happened over the last week.
I still can't believe that Hasbro would even attempt to do such a thing. . . Derpy will still be the same in our hearts.

They probably had both version already done when it was time to air considering that they would already know the reaction that an episode would have. We might never know, but what could have happenned is that the hub wanted the derpy version, but hasbro did not. So the hub used their version on the distribution platforms which they have and hasbro provided the other to everyone else "ie itunes"
It might not happen often, but there are many examples of shows which are modified depending on the market where they are being shown.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
The IF mods actively reject bronies and/or still think that they are just another 4chan meme gone wild. Of course, they're almost too serious for their own good. They pretty much shut down the last MLP topic as soon as it began.
By "Other Inheritance Site" do you mean the one on Alagaesia Online? Because that's just me and a few select friends, all of whom were kind of converted because of me.
The full story was that both Hasbro and Apple received about 10-20 emails (out of a huge pile of hundreds of emails) in reply for that certain episode, that were complaining about Derpy being an obscure reference for the mentally handicapped and wanted her appearance to be changed. (even if she was present several episodes before without much complaint, and many of Derpy's fans and even some of the animators are related to someone mentally disabled) Hasbro gave into such requests, knowing that "whatever they did, it would make somebody upset," and changed Derpy's voice and eyes along with having the mention of her name removed on television reruns and the episodes sold on iTunes, as well as ceasing production of Derpy merchandise. Though they didn't intend to do it at first; it was done in a rush, as you can tell by the low quality and unemotional aspects of both RD's voice and Derpy's voice.
Internet riots were aroused. Hasbro's public email was flooded along with several official complaints directed towards the ones responsible. Petitions with tens of thousands of signatures were made in only a few days. In short, things got hectic fast. But even if Hasbro has not made any public statement in return, the animators of MLP show their regret, applaud the fans for their devotion, and do confirm that Derpy will remain unchanged throughout the rest of the series. (but most likely will not have another speaking part) As such things have settled, and Derpy's fans still await a response from Hasbro.
I'm eager for the next episode after seeing a brief clip of it that was released as a preview. Flutterrage is always entertaining, though this time, it's intentional.

The episode's airing tomorrow, at 1PM. That's the schedule change - they just moved it later.
I agree. I thought the preview was funny, so the episode should be fairly entertaining.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Fortunately, after the past few episodes, we're at least now reassured that Derpy is back to her cross-eyed self now. (She even has several closeups in the preview of the next episode) Plus, I think that Crackle the Dragon in the last episode was the animators' way of getting back at Hasbro. Genius.
This is some older news, but for the fans on here, there has been a discussion going around about the synopsis of season finale coming April 21st. First of all, apparently, you find out from the synopsis that Twilight Sparkle has an older brother named Shining Armor; a white, blue-maned unicorn who looks like a knight of Canterlot or someone of high status.
And not only that, but the season finale is about him getting married to a Princess. No, not Celestia or Luna, but another alicorn by the name of Princess Cadence. (Who is a deep rose color with a magenta/purple/gold mane. Her cutie mark is a cyan heart surrounded by gold lace, possibly indicating her role as the pony equivalent of Cupid)
This has quite the stir in the fanbase. Not only is Twilight's family larger than previously thought, but there is another alicorn in the world now, again putting into question their origins, which I wish will hopefully be explained in the next season.
Also, John De Lancie, the voice of Discord, had recently announced that he did more voice acting work for MLP just recently. (most likely for a Season 3 episode) Whether he's returning as Discord or some other character has yet to be explained, but there are other sources that claim Discord's return in Season 3.
My prediction is it's going to be in a flashback episode of his original defeat at the beginning of Celestia and Luna's reign. It would be both cliche and quite useless right now to bring Discord back again. But that's this fall so I have nothing to base myself off of. Only 4 episodes remain of season 2, and then a long, pony-less summer awaits. *sigh*
Also, I recently found this and was dumbstruck by it's beauty. Even if you're not a fan of MLP, if you like classical/orchestral music, you'll probably like this.

That's good. I'm glad the fanbase didn't have Derpy taken away from them.
I've never really put any thought into the alicorns.
I wouldn't mind seeing Discord return. I thought the first two episodes of Season 2 were very good.
I'm downloading that song right now to listen to it.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
There was a commercial recently that showed some clips from the season finale. It gets much weirder than that. Short of actually seeing it, let's just say that there is chaos everywhere, clones of everyone fighting each other, Pinkie Pie using Twilight as a weapon, and at one point, you see Shining Armor in the background with strange, green eyes.
I still have no idea of what to think of it. It looks like one hectic battle royale between the mane 6 and their evil clones. (Still, hopefully with the appearance of Princess Cadence we can find out more about the alicorns, and maybe even see Luna at the wedding as well)

It certainly looks like a real mess. So many different copies... Are they clones, visitors from a parallel universe, time travellers or simply an experiment gone wild?

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Well it's officially confirmed: Princess Cadence is Princess Celestia's niece.
Now, whether Luna is her mother or not is unconfirmed, (nor does it explain where Blueblood came from) but this does mean that Twilight Sparkle will become related to Celestia through this marriage. (That alone would be something for poor Twi to freak out about, wouldn't you think?)
Hasbro is also saying that they're trying to make this season go out with as big of a bang they can get. They're promising previews, activities, teasers, and more over the next few weeks to the premiere, trying to build up as much hype they can get. I just hope that the episode will live up to it's expectations.

Yeah, I never really expected to see the site changed like this. What's up with that?
On topic: so, what's your opinions on the new episodes? I enjoyed Hurricane Fluttershy a lot. I would rank it as one of the best episodes of the series.
Ponyville Confidential was okay. I don't usually like the Cutie Mark Crusaders episodes very much. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It was mediocre.

MFW seeing the banner.
Yeah, I didn't expect something like this, but it's awesome.
I really liked both the newer episodes. Hurricane Fluttershy had awesome music, and I was laughing hard through Ponyville Confidential. (Celestia's cake addiction, and Fluttershy's tail extensions made me laugh the hardest)
Yet still I'm suffering. Apparently for an April fools joke my brother served me a "Cupcakes" themed breakfast. Yep, I'm gonna be sick.

I'm curious, how is it that this show has come to take over the world on such a scale? More than things usually do, anyway. Maybe I just don't get out much (and I don't XD) but, really, this thing seems to have taken off more than anything I've ever seen, except maybe Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter (Or Twilight, heavens forbid...).
Seriously, what is it about this show that appeals to such a wide audience?
*I don't personally watch it, or I might actually know. I'm one of the people who is annoyed a bit by it, most of the time, so this is from a perspective of wanting to know why everyone except me likes it

Oups, I should probably fix the word censor now. I'll have the time for that tonight.
As for the show, you should give it a try. You should atleast watch the first five episodes for the sake of having tried it. You can find all of the episodes on youtube in HD
I probably know in person a dozen or more people who watch the show. There's nothing like singing winter wrapup in a restaurant together

Well there are several factors that make the show so appealing to such a wide and large audience, and what gives it one of the fastest growing fandoms in the history of televised entertainment. First of all are the creators of the show. These people used to animate or created the older cartoons of the 90s and early 00s, such as PPG, Samurai Jack, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Ed Edd and Eddy, etc. The stuff that those old enough to remember absolutely loved growing up. Lauren Faust, creator of MLP FiM, planned even before the show's production that this wouldn't be another little girl's show; she had hoped to break the gender and age stereotypes, and make this a show that one of any age or gender can easily enjoy. A true show for the entire family. Her plan worked. To some, even too well, considering that the main audience are older males and to an extent older females as well as children.
Second, the cast and characters are amazingly well done. The individual personality traits of every single character, their motives, flaws, and goals, are clearly seen and well thought out, giving them a sense of relatability and reality that is extraordinarily rare nowadays. And then furthermore, the voice actors really give the characters the soul that makes them so likable. (Plus, many times they, along with the actual creators of the show, interact with the fanbase quite openly and freely, making the show very interactive. It's even gone to the point now where things specifically for the fans can be found in every episode; references to certain video games or movies, inside jokes, or favorite background characters referenced.)
For one example of these characters, Twilight Sparkle, one of the main protagonists, is a well-read scholar, and personal protege of the God/Monarch of their land, Princess Celestia. She has a gift for magic and possesses an extensive knowledge of all subjects that she learned from constantly reading books. However, she is known to have little faith in things she doesn't understand, and can be very compulsive and her obsession for perfection and micromanagement is a common problem. Many times only worsening an already bad situation. (Textbook OCD) Yet still, her organization skills prove invaluable when she leads and directs a group, and she depends on her friends a lot for guidance and help.
Third, the creators of the show actually use these well-dimensioned, complex characters to the best of their ability, creating clever episodes that contain both serious and comical traits that usually focus on certain character flaws that they have to overcome and then focus on what they learn from that experience. Add that to some amazing quality animation and music to convey the message and meaning of the show, usually teaching some useful lessons that are quite important for anyone to hear, and you have an equally awesome viewing experience. (And many times the characters actually appear to have learned from previous episodes, evolving them and helping them better themselves. This continuity only adds to the entertainment overall.)
And last, the fan community itself. The show has inspired unity, friendship, and creativity that has not been seen in any other fandom. For the most part, the community welcomes all with open arms. As well, the fanbase is known for inspiring a creative spark; many times people who never have written anything worthwhile, drawn a good picture, or played a note in their life suddenly start producing amazing works that fly throughout the brony community and inspire others to do the same. Indeed, I'm listening to some sweet brony-made music right now.
So in all honesty, before you judge the show, give it a shot. The first two episodes alone are somewhat okay, and provide the necessary backstory to understand more about the world setting, but the show's quality improves dramatically as it goes on, so usually we give a challenge to watch the first 5 episodes. And if you can, look at a couple episodes from season 2, like the season premiere, which has a lot more things tailored specifically for it's older audience, and even a famous guest actor known for his famous role in Star Trek. Yet still, if you complete the challenge and you still don't like it, you have every right to and I'll respect that. Just one of the main things that Bronies don't like are haters that hate the show just because of blind prejudice against anything pink or feminine or what little they see coming from the fanbase, and who have never seen the show themselves. Once they've seen it, though, whether they like it or not is up to them, and I'll respect that decision either way. Not everyone likes the same thing.
(Instead of that huge wall of text, I could have directed you to an hour long documentary called "Ballad of the Brony" that explains basically the same thing, but with more detail about the community, but I didn't want to waste too much of your time)

Out of all the things that you said you liked, you only liked the comedy? That episode was INTENSE.
I was practically prancing through my house babbling like a maniac for a good hour thanks to that. Fight scenes, dark armies, life-sucking changelings, disney-style villain songs. . . This was clearly one of the most mature and action filled episodes I've ever seen. And instantly one of my favorites. Many manly squees and screams of delight were made today.
---SPOILERS AHEAD---
Queen Chrysalis gave Discord and Nightmare Moon a run for their money on best villain. While NM had the best backstory and motive, and Discord had the best character, (And we'll see how much more there is to add to him next season) QC had the creepiest look, the more powerful force, (honestly, who's jaw didn't drop when Celestia was bested? Even Chrysalis herself was shocked) and her own song. (Can't get it out of my head. It's enchanting.)
If only we had some backstory on her. But for all we know, she may just be a demon from Tartarus that escaped when Cerberus wandered off. Twilight did say that the creatures there had the ability to destroy Equestria.
Haha! Lyra spoke, and Luna has returned! Although, she seems to be living somewhere other than Canterlot. Maybe there's more to that old Everfree castle than previously thought? DJ-PON3 is also in the house with canon magenta eyes!
Though you are right on the comedy. There was a lot to go around, otherwise it wouldn't be MLP. The whole changeling war was both pure epic and comedy wrapped together. Pinkie was awesome with her Party Cannon and Twi as her weapons of choice. But most notably, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. . . kiss. It's hard to catch, but it's there.
Yeah, I know, I did a double take and had to stop and rewind SEVERAL times to catch it. Some say that it's on the nose, but after seeing a high def version, it's too close to say. But I do know this, the creators are sure getting bold. They're starting to realize that messing with shippers is fun.
Now for six months of nothing but fan art, music, fanfiction, and from what I hear, several fan made episodes. But it may be worth the wait. I hear Discord's coming back for Season 3, (Confirmed by John De Lancie himself. Also, look closely, and you can see glimpses of the Mane 6's discorded personalities throughout the episode, especially Applejack with her liar face, and Rarity going after the bouquet) along with more Luna. Maybe even a look into Celestia's personal life. Ooohhhh, this is going to be a fun year! ---SPOILER END---

No, it's not the ONLY thing I liked. I guess I just didn't have the willpower to type up a huge summary like you did. I just settled with "plenty to like."
Though you're definitely right, this it's one of the best episodes of the show.

To anyone who's ever read the My Little Dashie fanfiction, (and those who have not should read it) you need to check this out. This looks like a massive project, and it looks really professional.
I admit, I shed a tear when I read it. I think that this may have an even more profound effect.

Nice trailer. I've never read any of the fanfiction, but I have seen it in another video that was made on youtube. Seems like it has potential.
The season final was awesome

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
It is a very good read. Definitely not one of action, but very well done on emotions. About 2/3 of people who read it shed a tear.
Well I just did a bit more researching into that movie, and they've finally stepped it up to full production. (The director started it having second thoughts and was really timid, but I think the loads of encouragement that the bronies provided helped)
They said they're redoing the trailer to have better effects and locations, (and a better voice actor for the narration. It would be epic if they got MictheMicrophone or iBringdaLulz [two famous bronies with great voices] for that role like they want) and getting a lot of people to help, as apparently, this guy is using this as his application into a high end film school. This WILL be really good.

This thread hasn't been active in a while, so I guess I'll post something from Comic-Con.
