Shade
This my entry in a writing contest I submitted that got in the book they made.
Shade
Emcurro splashed his face into the stream. Cold water greeted him as he blinked underwater. With a gasp, he pulled his face out of the water and looked down at the rippling mirror. Slowly, a faint reflection came upon the water’s surface. A hardened face stared back at him. Intense green eyes coldly looked back at him. The wet brown hair looked strange to him. A quiver of a smile came to his face. A drop of water shattered the mirror.
It amuses you.
Emcurro growled as Praeor’s words shook in his head.
“I told you not to return,” he snapped at his reflection.
An unfortunate event. You and I are bound, little human. We have unsettled business.
“We have no such thing!” howled Emcurro at the demon.
We want your soul.
“In the name of the Master of Light I banish you, foul thing!” cried out Emcurro, repeating the exorcism lines.
I have a name you know.
“Shut up!” cried out Emcurro.
The Master of Light cares not about you. Emcurro, you are cursed. There, I have said it. Your name. In the views of the dumb clerics, I would have complete control over you now. I am Praeor. Don’t think I want to be a voice inside your head. Demons are neutral, Emcurro. We have a mission. I will control you at times so you won’t get yourself kill every second. Apart from that, you are alone.
“NO!” cried out Emcurro. Praeor was strange to him. It seemed like he was talking, but felt like he knew the information just as Praeor was about to say it. He drew his sword and turned around. No one was there.
I’m inside your head. A spirit. I can’t be harmed. But you will go insane if I stay too long. That isn’t something that I want to see.
“You sound concerned about me,” laughed Emcurro.
SHADE
“What?” asked Emcurro.
That is what we are. Shade. An unseen force. When we meld together, I take control, and we shall be Shade.
“ A killing force, murdering and pillaging?” asked Emcurro, wondering what the demon would make him do.
Gods, no. A killing machine, yes though. But we are saving innocent lives. Laugh at that Emcurro. If we fail, a destiny will fail. Dark times will take Aretean.
“You demons are concerned about our world?” laughed Emcurro.
When one world fails, the others pile up like dominos.
“Let us see what this Shade can do?” asked Emcurro.
Shade leapt over the ruined wall and rolled after it landed. It turned and started to run again. The dirks that were on its hips were unsheathed as it ran. It would be prepared. A sword was too heavy—why use it? But Shade kept it because anything could change the course of a battle. Shade was coming closer to the enemy camp. It silently ran past a wandering guard, too drunk to notice the hunter. Shade found an elevated spot overlooking the enemy base. Most of the guards were by the barrack. Two guards stood in sentry towers. The wizard’s tent was empty. Prisoners were in a giant cage in the back. It was guarded by many magical alarms. Shade prepared to make its attack.
“Damn,” breathed out Emcurro.
Language Emcurro, what did your mother teach you?
“Not to have a demon in my head?” suggested Emcurro.
True. Shade is dangerous. We will have to become it though. Be ready to get out of Shade. If it goes too far, we could be attached forever.
“I’ll remember that,” said Emcurro.
One thing more. If Shade dies, one of us will control this body. We will have to fight for it. Your soul is my key home.
“So it’s as if we’re in a temporary truce?” asked Emcurro.
Yes.
“Then let’s get this finished,” said Emcurro.
Shade jumped the last seven feet to the camp. It landed and rolled, unsheathing its dirks. The men yelled out warnings as Shade ran at them. Swirling around with its speed, Shade cut down the first five men. It laughed out aloud. A whistle sounded and Shade rolled away as the guards in the sentry towers shot arrows at it. Shade turned and started to run at one of the sentry towers. With a long jump, Shade soared up toward the guard. He stared in disbelief as Shade came at him with dirks at the ready. He screamed as they pierced his throat. Shade laughed and grabbed the dead guard’s bow and arrows. Shade killed the other sentry guard with a headshot. Then, in quick succession, Shade shot every arrow he had. Each hit its mark. Several guards with crossbows came into the battleground so Shade laid down in the sentry tower.
“What am I doing!” cried out Emcurro.
What you have to do. There are children in those cages. These men are killing them.
“No! What is Shade? He isn’t me and I don’t think he’s you!” answered Emcurro. Tears came to his eyes. He had never like to kill people. Now he had killed so many.
Shade is both of us. An avatar or aspect.
“That makes it okay!” exclaimed Emcurro.
Shade is the worst of me and the worst of you combined.
“That’s bad,” said Emcurro.
You should have listened to your mother.
Shade kicked the man that opened the trapdoor. Shade’s dirk killed the next one. After that, Shade jumped from the sentry tower. Two crossbow bolts whizzed past it. Shade landed and charged the crossbowmen. Too concerned with getting a new bolt into the crossbow than running, Shade made easy work of them. The wizard appeared. “What a surprise,” smirked the wizard. In a mocking manner, Shade dodged the flame bolts that the wizard sent at it. A large force of guards were coming. Using the guards as cover, Shade forced the wizard to stop her attack. The guards tried to stop Shade. “Just quit,” Shade said as it slashed through them. A blast of orange light nearly hit Shade. It was clear that the wizard no longer cared about collateral damage. Shade decided to deal with the wizard. It dodged the next magic attack and charged the wizard. Suddenly, something changed about the wizard and Shade was thrown into a pile of barrels.
The wizard is Shade too!
“I thought the demons wanted these people stopped?” asked Emcurro.
And some don’t.
“That’s great,” laughed Emcurro.
Shade can’t win.
“We’re doomed?” asked Emcurro.
Yes, the other Shade is better.
“Wait! Shade is the worst of us! What about the best of us?”
Good side? Radiance.
With its sword in hand, Radiance leapt at the wizard. Shade dodged the blow, unsheathing its own sword. Radiance and Shade engaged each other. Shade slashed down hard at Radiance but Radiance was ready. Radiance blocked the blow and slammed Shade into one of the towers. The tower collapsed onto Shade. The guards rushed at Radiance. Radiance easily knocked all the guards unconscious. Quickly, Radiance ran to the cage of prisoners. Radiance broke the lock and released them. Despite the dangers, Radiance knew that the prisoners would survive. Suddenly, Shade smashed into Radiance. Radiance tumbled to the ground. Shade’s sword was in its chest.
“AH!” cried out Emcurro.
NOOO!
Radiance staggered and pulled the sword out of its chest. Shade grinned at Radiance and punched Radiance in the face. Radiance was hurled several feet back.
“Fight back!” yelled out Emcurro.
You and I are dying.
“Okay then, but let’s finish this ugly son of a troll and take him along with us!” defiantly cried out Emcurro.
Radiance got up and stared hard at Shade. With sword in hand, Shade laughed and started at Radiance. Radiance grabbed a board from the broken sentry tower and used it to parry Shade’s attack. The board shattered in Radiance’s hands. Radiance fell. Shade loomed over his foe, and raised its sword to finish the defenseless Radiance. Radiance had skillfully maneuvered Shade into place. Radiance withdrew the hidden sword that was too heavy and impaled it into Shade. Shade stared at his foe, hatred for Radiance burned in its eyes. Then, it screamed and burst into tiny specks of dust, and was gone.
“We did it!” cried Emcurro. He looked around and retrieved his sword.
I like that ‘we’ in there.
“Of course you do. Shade was your plan and Radiance was mine,” laughed Emcurro.
Funny, you take credit for the good side of us.
“I was the one that thought of Radiance,” pointed out Emcurro.
But I created it.
“So we both have credit. Can you go now?” asked Emcurro.
No.
“Why?” asked Emcurro, puzzled.
We won and lost. You are dead.
“What do you mean?” asked Emcurro. Suddenly he felt pain in his chest and staggered.
A wound to the heart. Shade had a good throw.
“What did you say about this?” asked Emcurro.
If Shade dies, one of us will control this body. We will have to fight for it. Your soul is my key home. Now we fight. I have to kill you to return home. You have to kill me to get back of possession of your body.
“Wait! Is this the only way?” cried out Emcurro. Fighting a demon wasn’t what he wanted to do.
The only way I’m willing.
Emcurro found himself in a gray world.
“Where am I?” he asked. His voice sounded stretched and distant to him.
“In your mind,” came a familiar voice except that it wasn’t deafening any more. Emcurro turned to find a seven-foot tall armored figure standing behind him.
“I’m guessing that you’re Praeor?” Emcurro asked.
“I am,” came the answer. Praeor unsheathed a giant axe and started toward Emcurro.
Emcurro looked around for a weapon. His sword and dirks weren’t on his back.
“Shade! Radiance!” Emcurro yelled out.
“Fool, they are both of us together. They will not come,” laughed out the advancing demon.
“This is my mind! This is my soul we are fighting for!” yelled out Emcurro. “My mind. My soul. I should have more control.” A shining sword appeared in his hand and armor of light came around him. “Now we fight!” called out Emcurro.
Emcurro charged, heaving his sword at the demon. The blade was blocked by Praeor’s massive axe. Emcurro ducked as it came swinging at him. The human leapt and punched the demon in the chest. A bursting sound came and Praeor was sent into the mist of Emcurro’s mind.
“Curse you human!” spat out Praeor.
Emcurro prepared for Praeor’s attack. Instead, the demon heaved its axe into the ground. Emcurro screamed as pain whirled inside his head. He found himself on the ground with Praeor above him.
“It’s your mind,” laughed Praeor.
“And your prison!” yelled Emcurro. Lighting flashed and dozens of lighting bolts splintered the demon’s back. Praeor fell to the ground with a scream.
“My mind, my rules!” screamed Emcurro.
Praeor staggered upright and threw a knife into Emcurro’s chest. “Judge that then,” Praeor laughed.
“What happened to us? We were allies, and now we are fighting against each other?” groaned Emcurro. Darkness was starting to swallow him.
“I have won. You were a good person, Emcurro,” grinned Praeor.
Emcurro pulled out the knife and fell to the ground.
Praeor came to him and stared. “Goodbye Emcurro,” the demon said.
But Emcurro acted quickly and plunged his knife into Praeor’s heart.
“My mother taught me that!” laughed Emcurro, blood gushing from his mouth.
“We both lose!” cried Praeor.
“I call that a tie,” grinned Emcurro as he tumbled to the ground.
Emcurro.
Praeor.
Shade.
Radiance.
All the identities, that Emcurro and Praeor had had, swirled around fighting for existence. But they had all won a battle. Emcurro had defeated Praeor. Praeor had killed Emcurro. Radiance and Shade had killed each other. There was no winning on any side. Memories started to connect—a new identity was forming. It was an identity that all the personalities agreed upon. A truce was formed.
“I am one, I am all!” screamed Emcurro.
We are one.
Shade and Radiance nodding in agreement, let the metamorphous begin. Blinding white light came and swept them all away.
Terruro looked up from the counter as a new customer came into his inn. He was a tall and strong man likely from Kingsfold. He had a sword over his ragged cloak, and by the looks of him, he hadn’t had a bath for weeks.
“What can I get you Sir?” asked Terruro, wiping the countertop.
“Some food, a bath and a bed,” replied the stranger, putting five Argon silver on the counter. Terruro took them and got him a plate of breakfast. The stranger ate faster than anyone Terruro had ever seen.
“What’s your name Sir?” Teruro asked slowly.
The stranger laughed. He had had many names, Emcurro, Praeor, Shade and Radiance.
