Post Dark Destiny
I’m afraid if you’re reading this, it is for Dracoaestas and me to post only. This is the story that will explain Elcyon’s strange past and reveal some wicked adversaries for both her and Phalynx. I hope that you will enjoy the beginning of this

DARK DESTINY

It was a cool, star-filled night. The island was quiet except for the sounds of crickets and frogs chirping. Waves from the ocean crashed against the shore every now and then, spraying white foam against the rocks. Further inland, there was a cliff that rose high above the trees. On top of that cliff, sat Elcyon. She was staring up at the sky as she held her quill in one claw above her journal. She was glad the sky was so clear. It was the perfect night to star-gaze. When she was on an island, her home island to be exact, Elcyon noticed the sky was usually clearer than if she were on the mainland where there were villages with fire light.

Elcyon was born on the island and had lived there for a few years before she began to explore further out in Alagaesia. She had come back for further study on her home and the tree that held many mysteries to her past. When Elcyon had hatched, the only dragon on the island was Rodan, a dragon who was a little over a thousand years old. He had taken care of her and taught her many things. Now he was gone, another mystery to add to Elcyon’s collection. She was the only dragon living there now, and it had remained like that for the past few months. Elcyon lived in the forest, but it was getting a little chillier since the days were growing shorter. She was shivering as she finished her last sentence. She decided to go look or a cave to spend the cold months in.

Elcyon stood up, stretched, and flew off the cliff in search of a better place to stay. It wasn’t long until she found a cave not much farther from the cliff. It was higher, but quite large so that it would be comfortable enough for her. The cliff was well-hidden, so that any dragon that happened to pass by would not see it from a distance.

The cave was narrow at the entrance, but opened widely in the center. A small stream trickled down into gathering pools filled with fresh spring water. The water had come from a hole in the ceiling, which showed some of the sky, clearly for observing it. Elcyon walked over to one of the pools and took a drink. It was fresher than anything she ever tasted. When Elcyon pulled back, she could see that the water was sparkling with starlight.

I could definitely make my home here, she murmured to herself. It’s everything I could ever need.

Elcyon began to get comfortable, setting her journal above her on a rock that was definitely carved for storing things so they wouldn’t get wet. But somehow, El could not fall asleep. There was something about this particular cave that made her feel…unsettled.

An ancient presence, she said, looking around the cave.

There was no doubt that dragons used to live on the island, and some made their home there. El looked for more clues…when she found the paintings.

El lit some twigs on fire so she could see them more clearly. It was odd enough that she could see them at all in the shadowy part of the cave. She moved closer to the wall in order to inspect them.

They’re old, judging from the fading color, Elcyon noted to herself.

The paintings were red, brown, and orange. It seemed to be telling a story of something filled with dramatic events. There were a group of dragons around a very large tree. Other life, like birds and other small mammals, flourished around it. The next set was horrifying. It showed flaming creatures rising up from the sea. They had everything set ablaze and everything living on the island tried to flee. A tree was painted with millions of flames roaring up, taking the ashes of the tree into oblivion. Bodies of dragons lay scattered around the tree, burning up with it.

What happened here that long ago? Elcyon gasped in terror, putting a claw up against the wall gently.

That was when Elcyon saw something in the next painting that made her heart throb with excitement and fear at the same time. In the painting, a humanoid figure rose from the sea and used water to drench the island. Then, once the fire was put out, the figure approached the tree. Magic flowed out of the figure’s hands and wrapped it around the tree. That wasn’t what had startled Elcyon so. It was the white egg that was lying deep within the tree’s roots.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
OOC: Trust me guys, this is gonna be good. Later on in the story I'll let Phal's other friends join up too, though, if any of them are interested. Unfortunately they wouldn't come in 'til about halfway through, give or take. :)

IC: On the other side of the known Alagaesian lands, on the edge of the far East, a lone figure stood atop a dark hill. The sun was about two hours from rising, and Phalynx had not slept at all that night. She was too busy examining the sky. The stars above shone brighter and more clear than anywhere else in the land; this valley had been enchanted to magnify the stars so that hundreds of normally invisible ones could be seen in perfect clarity. On the other end of the valley, a huge waterfall thundered down the rocky slopes, spouting from a large cave mouth in the side of the cliff.

Phal was lying down on a grassy hill overlooking her valley, with the mountains surrounding it casting a shadowy backdrop behind her. The blue-ish hued trees below waved gently in the wind, and the small sounds of the river could be heard as it rushed past. Fireflies drifted about in the clearings between the dark trees, making small clouds of yellow-orange light in the darkness. All in all, it was a beautiful night.

Phal's green eyes surveyed the heavens in their natural light, and then suddenly the green was masked by a golden glow. She was looking at the other forms of light cast down by the stars. She had always felt an affinity for them, and she knew why as well. The stars were the "source" of her powers. But their origins lay in a tangled web with the stars and other uncertain events, all shrouded in the mystery of the past. Her mother's eldunari had only been able to tell her so much, but there was still a great deal to be discovered. Phalynx's true name was a clue, but it was too vague. The dragon was hungry for details.

She suddenly felt a small shiver run down the length of her spine, and was uncertain why she had felt it. She often felt when she was needed in the land of Alagaesia; when there was trouble brewing, but this was new. It almost felt like a precognition of sorts. Something important was going to happen soon, it was only a matter of time until it did.

Phal felt the urge to fly into the cave above the waterfall, and not one to ignore her instincts, she raised her wings and soared into it. The cavern led forward along a long, gentle turn, before opening up into the largest cave in existence. Dragonkind had discovered this cave long ago, tens of thousands of years before even her egg was layed. They had built a magnificent city within: Unity, but the citizens of Unity had been driven out or consigned to a worse fate by the evil sorcerous dragon Kumaraq. But now the city was empty of all.

Phal flew and landed on the entrance platform in one corner of the cave. Though the structure was huge, it was miniscule in comparison to the entire cavernous stretch. Phal flapped up to the main entrance and began her way down the tunnels that would lead her to the main city square.

The city square was another monstrous cavern, though not nearly the size of the first. It was lined with buildings cut into the cliffside, with a central carved plateau in the middle. The floor was, as always, filled with lava. Phal stopped on the entrance stair and gazed around. She felt like examining some of the ancient documents and artifacts she had discovered here.

OOC: Hmm, I may include some of Phal's power's origin story in this rp too, Astral. lol that was a little unexpected, actually. :)

OOC: Certainly. He's pretty much one of Phal's buddies. :) I'll let everyone know when they can start joining in, but it won't be 'til after Phal and El do a few certain things.

Also, for evil charries, I will let evil charries with a very close affiliation with the Shadow Realm join. (That's kind of important, so sorry no Nidhog. :) ) But that'd be way towards the end, so don't worry about it. :D

OOC: That’s fine Draco. Oh, sorry, I guess I didn’t know we were going to let other people join…or aren’t we? Are we? What’s the plan so I can get situated. :D

IC:

Elcyon stared at the painting in wonder. She remembered Rodan telling her that she was found beneath the roots of the tree in the middle of the island; the Tree of Prosperity. Of course, she was able to see her shell color; it was white. She had been born with black scales. El still had no idea what that meant, although she recently learned that dark energy seemed to be attracted to her.

She travels down the wall, finding that there was some writing where the pictures had ended. It was strange characters, but El had been taught the ancient language used by the ancestors. Rodan had taught her the language when she was still ‘young’. The writing states the dying words of a dragon who wrote it in their own blood. It said:

They have come. Only a few dragons were able to escape, but many have perished under their fire. I am the last elder. I was not able to find the egg, and I am afraid it, along with the rest of the island, had been destroyed. Many will fall before the darkness comes.

That was it. There was a few scattered letters and then the blood smeared down the wall, as if the old dragon had died at that moment. Elcyon shivered away from the wall and curled up on the floor. It was bad enough that she had no clue what was going on with her lately, but now she found paintings along the side of a cave wall, telling the story of the death and rebirth of the tree. Her egg was part of it too. Elcyon began to wonder what the purple specks in her eyes were. When she hatched, the specks weren’t there. Once she was able to see what she looked like, Elcyon actually witnessed the specks form in her eyes. She had too many questions about her past, and a few more about the future.

I think I’d better find some answers, Elcyon said to herself with determination though she was utterly exhausted. Tomorrow, I’m going to go to the mainland and get some information.

Elcyon tried to make some more plans, but couldn’t for she fell into a deep slumber soon after.

***

She woke the next morning, feeling completely rested. Elcyon felt that she could do anything, now that she got a decent amount of sleep. Elcyon walked out of the cave, greeting the dawn with a stretch. She opened her wings and dove off the cliff, catching the drift of some wind and ascended above the island.

Where will I go? She wondered as she flew away from the island and out into the open sea. I have no idea where to start!

Elcyon closed her eyes and let her instincts take over. Once she was over the mainland, she decided to trust her instincts and follow them. She opened her eyes and found that she was just above a small village. If she was going to start out anywhere, Elcyon felt she had to go into that village and seek a scholar; someone who was older and wiser than herself. Maybe she could find a dragon there with the wisdom that Rodan had possessed.

She landed on the outskirts, so as not to draw attention to herself. She found a small house fifty feet away from her, though it was farther away from the town than any other house. Elcyon crept closer, sniffing the air. A human lived there, an older one at that. She could ask the old human where she could find a dragon with great knowledge.

Elcyon peered through the window, shyly, feeling like she was being nosy. She found an old woman sitting in a rocking chair next to a fire. The woman seemed older than time, with her silver hair flowing behind her back and her face wrinkled like a raisin. The old woman looked up from the fire, and over at the window.

“It’s nice to finally meet you, Elcyon,” the old woman stated, smiling. Her eyes were a deep green, filled with many years of wisdom Elcyon could not comprehend.

Elcyon was startled. H…how…how did you know my name? she squeaked.

The old woman laughed a rough laugh. “Ah, Elcyon, I’ve known you for quite some time. I’ve seen you in my dreams. I was expecting you. Though you’re late,” she added with a wry chuckle. “Fifty years late, to be exact.”

Post Re: Dark Destiny
OOC: lol. We will be letting people join, but later, and only ones who are already good friends of Phal or El. And even later, we may let shadow-magic-using evil charries in as well. I'll start letting people know when I'm ready, and then you can say when you are and then they can join. Kay? :)

IC: After a long, tedious examination of what seemed like hundreds of ancient, crackling documents and stone tablets, Phal was none the wiser about any of the questions she had originally posed for herself. She did learn a few new things about the city itself, however, including the fact that Zephorion, better known as the Namer, had been born in this place. Apparently, the last two pure "dragon races" (colors) to join together, were red and blue. Zephorion was the first child of one pure red dragon and one pure blue dragon. It had been a greatly celebrated event, according to the documents Phal had been reading.

Though interesting, that small tidbit was not what she was looking for. She sighed and took flight, already at the huge cavern that the river ran from. All of the mountain's snow and ice melted and came down through crevices in the mountain, ending up in this cavern in a large, extremely shallow lake below. In the vast majority of the cavern, the water was no more than two feet deep. As it got near the river, though, it got deeper and deeper, eventually all pouring into the swift blue currents.

Phal flew into the vast expanse of almost weightless-feeling darkness. The air was almost perfectly still in the middle of the cave, and everything was completely dark. She had her magical vision off for the fun of it, enjoying the relaxing feeling of flying in the pitch blackness. It almost seemed as a dream, for she could only make out dim blue-ish and orange light in the corner she was leaving. A few patches of glowing moss and everlasting torches on the far distant sides of the cavern like small purple-ish stars. And, of course, the cave was lit again near the mouth of the river. It was all so far away that it seemed unreal, something that couldn't happen in the outer world. There was always light there, even on cloudy nights.

As Phal was flying, she suddenly felt a huge jolt of pain rush down her head and into her neck. She closed her eyes, wincing until it was gone. When she opened them, she saw that she had lowered in flight about a dragonlength, and was mostly gliding. What was that?! she wondered, startled by the sudden pang. Phal quickened her wingbeats, deciding that she wanted to be out of the cave in case it happened again.

Unfortunately, only seconds later, it did. Phal cried out this time at the intensity of the pain, and her wings locked in flight. She glided unstably down much further, almost tipping dangerously. The pain suddenly vanished as soon as it had come. Phal blinked uncertainly, wondering what was going on.

It came again, this time wracking her head with pain until she couldn't even think. She desperately tried to lock her wings to stay in a stable glide, but she could feel herself spinning, falling, spiralling down. Or was that her mind? She could not tell, it was only pain, and then darkness.

The vision came in confusing flashes of sound and color. There was the valley at night. Suddenly she could see Faefnir. Then it shifted to show Zephorion speaking to her parents. And then, her egg, laying on the ground in the center of a clearing of trees, glowing faintly. There was a flash of something flying past, almost feathery. Then she saw something, airborne, and glowing with intense silver light. Rays of light came from the things in the air and shot towards the silver egg in the clearing. The egg was lit with a blinding brilliance, and the other light disappeared. Then it was all dark again.

Phal's actual vision came back blurry and unfocused, but slowly focused itself to reveal her surroundings. She was lying in a shallow area, only submerged about a foot in the water, with her head and one wing lying on damp rocks. She raised her head slowly, and sighed in relief. Her landing had been a crash, but she could tell by how she was positioned that she had been gliding in a wide circle before hitting the ground rather gently, compared to most crashes. She felt bruised and a little scraped by the rocks, but otherwise unharmed.

What was that? I've never had a vision about myself while I was awake, and I haven't had a dream about the past since I was in my egg... she thought, perplexed. But she knew that she had seen the first glimpses of the origins of her powers. They had been given to her after her egg was laid, and obviously in a very dramatic fashion. And, of course, Zephorion was there. Why was he there? It was obvious there were still many questions to investigate.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
OOC: Sounds like a plan, Stan! :D Good, now that we're all on the same page, I shall begin this next section.

IC:

Elcyon stared at the old woman, speechless beyond compare.

“Now, you’re here because you’re looking for answers, am I correct?” the old woman asked, getting up with her wooden cane and walking over to a desk. The desk was littered with papers and shards of rocks.

Elcyon shook her head a little to get out of her daze. Wait a minute, how did you know that I,

The woman chuckled. “I don’t need to be psychic to see you have questions. Your whole expression tells me that you are searching. It was no coincidence that you came here to my home,” she whispered. The woman picked up the papers and rocks and brought them outside with her in order to stand next to Elcyon. “My name is Hora, and I think I can help you find the answers you are looking for. I must warn you, they may be vague and you might have to search for the majority on your own. I’m not as young as I used to be, you know."

I’ll take any word of advice, Elcyon said quietly. I just want to know…my past.

“Your past…hmm…yes, the past may hold a key to your Pandora’s box,” Hora murmured. She placed four crystals in a circle and then sat down in the center, holding a clear one.

“What would you like to know?” she asked. “It will help me see into the past if you tell me specifically what it is you are looking for.”

Well, Elcyon said hesitantly, I was on my home island when I found this cluster of paintings…I saw someone who used water magic to put out the fire that raged on that island. I saw an egg in the middle of the roots, though. I think…I don’t know…

“Let me see what there is to see,” Hora said in a hushed tone. She gazed into the crystal, her eyes glazing over when she was deep in thought. “It was 100 years ago. Yes, I can see now…the island was attacked by fire demons.

“The fire demons rose from the ocean, in search of a home that was dry. Their flames were so hot, that water could not affect them. They devoured the dragons that prospered there, and…incinerated everything in their blazing paths.” Her expression saddened. “This is terrible…the fire demons were too strong. But a few dragons had managed to escape. Though…wait…something is…rising from the ocean. It…it is a Nymph. She chased away the fire demons, and put out the remainder of the fire. She’s…she’s taking away the fire from the Tree of Prosperity. There was so much evil put into it…she had to retrieve the evil out of it. The tree was reborn, and the Nymph placed a protection spell around the tree so no living thing could approach it. She returned to the sea, and was never seen again.”
Hora blinked a couple of times and gasped. Her eyes came back into focus and she sat the crystal down with shaking hands. “There was a dragon egg lying in the roots of those trees!” she breathed. “The poor thing! Who knows what the Nymph’s magic did to it?”

Hora? Elcyon murmured, looking down at her claws. I…I think I know who it was that was in that egg at the time. Elcyon looked up a little and down into Hora’s eyes as she waited. It was me. I know, because my adoptive father told me I was found me lying among the roots of the tree. I didn’t know what to make of it.

“Tell me, child…what color was your egg shell?” she demanded.

It…it was white, Elcyon whispered, dreading what the prophetess was about to say next.

“It is worse than I feared. A dragon borne with black scales from a white egg is a sign of a bad omen. You are cursed as well, young one,” Hora said sympathetically.

I knew I was cursed, but I had no idea that it would lead to this! Elcyon cried in despair. I might never be able to rid the curse from me!

Hora continued to sit there in silence, brooding. Finally, she used her cane to stand up.

“Don’t give up hope, Elcyon. I know of a way you can put a stop to this yourself.”

Really? How?

“Go to the Nymph yourself,” Hora urged her. “They are immortal; she should still be around. Fly out to the ocean where the Water Nymph will be. She lives in an underwater cave. If you go there, she might be able to help you.”

Oh, thank you so much, Hora! Elcyon exclaimed, rising into the air with excitement.

“Beware, young dragon,” Hora cautioned. “Nymphs are tricky creatures. You might have to do something for her in return.”

If it can help me get rid of this stupid curse, I’m willing to do anything! Elcyon stated nobly, flying off towards the ocean with a new hope burning in her heart.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phalynx slowly stood up, wincing at the painful bruises. Well, at least there's nothing worse, she thought, glad she hadn't broken any bones. Down here, on the shallow lake at the bottome of the cave, and almost in the center, she felt very small and lonely. A small shiver ran down her spine. The air down here was perfectly still, and if she didn't use her sight, the tiny points of light were so distant and far up that she felt in the middle of an uncrossable void, doomed forever to roam this dark place.

Phal closed her eyes, shutting out the fearful thoughts. Was she a hatchling, letting her fears run wild?! That would be illogical; she had to keep a clear and calm mind. When she opened her eyes again, her sight on, she was met with another shock. Not far away, parts of the rocky floor were bulging up, crumbling away, as something emerged. She could see with her infrared vision that it was a particularly large ogre, a creature that lived in the deepest cavervous reaches of the world. She had encountered them before. Why this one was on its own, she had no idea.

She tried to raise her wings to fly at it and burn it away with her flame, but cried out in pain as she raised her left wing too far. She had obviously wrenched it badly when she had crashed. Flying would be painful, and healing it would take too long and put her at a vulnerable place against this ogre. She would have to fight it on the ground, something she didn't really enjoy.

Nevertheless, Phal closed her wings and ran towards it just as it emerged. It flung a rock at her, which she dodged, but a second hit her back as she ducked under it. She winced, but reared up and blasted starry flame at it. The ogre howled and fell into its hole. Phal went and stood over it, and burned the injured creature until it was dead.

Great, now I have to block this hole, she thought. She couldn't have any more ogres coming into this cave. It could lead them to Unity or to her valley. Before she set to work, she concentrated on the magic around her, watching it and pulling it in. Then, she slowly transformed it into healing magic. That took the most of her effort; after that healing her wing was almost no trouble. It was only a wrench, and took barely any energy to set right. Feeling much better, if a little tired, Phal began pushing the large rocks back into the hole, and then flying out to gather more.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Elcyon flew away from the village out towards the ocean. She didn't know where, in the ocean, the Nymph was, but Hora did warn her that it wasn't going to be as easy as it sounded. Elcyon squinted her eyes from the glare of the setting sun as she left the mainland out into open water.

She began to wonder more about what was really in her past. She had too many questions that would not be answered in the amount of time she wanted to recieve them. Her mind was working too fast; she wanted to absorb as much knowledge as possible! The past held so many secrets; Elcyon couldn't stand to be ignorant!

I hope this Nymph knows why I'm at where I am today, Elcyon grumbled to herself, flapping a couple of times to gain altitude.

Elcyon let go of herself to her instincts. She was able to find someone who could help her answer what few questions out of the million she had. If her instincts led her that far, maybe they would help her find this Nymph.

She flew out a few hundred miles, enjoying the sun's warm rays against her back as she did so. When she was out far into the ocean, to the point where she couldn't see the mainland anymore, Elcyon stopped. She could feel some kind of strange magical energy pulse from the water. She dove under, blinking a few times at the saltiness it possessed.

The cave was in plain eyesight. Elcyon could see it through the bluriness of the water, and it was at least 1,000 feet wide in diameter at least. Elcyon headed towards the cave, using her wings to help her swim.

Elcyon hurried under the cave's entrance where she found a spot to surface above her. Her head broke it, finding herself in an underwater cave, just as Hora had told her.

The cave was filled with many kinds of jewelry and metals. Everything, including the bed, was embroided with gemstones or alloys. In the furthest part of the cave sat a young-looking woman, with dark-blue hair that almost seemed black, with eyes a dark green that shone with mischief. She was sitting upon a golden chair, looking straight at Elcyon.

"I'd knew you'd come someday," she murmured, her voice as smooth as a lake on a calm, windless day.

Wow, it seems like I've been pretty predictable to everyone lately, Elcyon commented sharply, getting up out of the water. Are you the Water Nymph who helped restore the Tree of Prosperity's life force?

"Yes," she said, getting up from her chair. "I am that Nymph. It is my job to keep the oceans clean and in order. My name is Kinna. I knew you would come to my home someday."

How did you know? Elcyon asked. More importantly, what did you do to the tree, exactly? No one can approach it, except me. I've been trying to figure it out, but I haven't gotten anywhere. I'm also cursed, and I have no reason why!

"I knew, because I could see you in your egg shell. I can see more than most," she whispered mysteriously. Then she sighed. "The tree was the only thing that was keeping the island alive. I needed to restore it back to its original state. Those fire demons had no right to destroy it. I had to remove the evil from the tree, but I couldn't just keep it there. You see, an evil like that, especially that came from demons, can be contained. The evil was sent to the nearest life force it could find."

Elcyon's eyes widened. Was that life force...me?

"I'm afraid so, and I really am sorry for that," Kinna murmured sympathetically. "But I'm afraid I cannot remove your curse. The evil never created your curse. It may have shown up on its own accord, since you seem to attract dark energy to you. I could not say."

But what can I do? Elcyon cried, exasperated. I don't want this curse! And I can't believe that there's an actual evil inside me! Does that make me evil?

"Not necessarily," Kinna replied. "You seem to have grown up without any evil force to tamper with your mind. You may have avoided the worst of it."

Do you know who could break the curse? Elcyon pleaded in a desperate attempt.

Kinna was silent for a moment. Finally, she nodded. "You have to find the source of how it all began. Once you do, you either get rid of it, or you destroy it."

Can't you give me more of a hint than that?

"I'm afraid not. I don't know how your curse came to be. I truly am sorry, however. Now, for payment," she began.

Elcyon was outraged. Payment? Payment?! What kind of payment?

"Just a small trinket for helping you with your troubles," Kinna said, shrugging. "It's nothing too big. I hope you can get it for me."

Elcyon sighed. She had forgotten that Nymphs would like something in return, as Hora warned her. Fine, what is it?

"A large, red gem that was given to dragons from the Nymphs thousands of years ago," she explained. "A long story short, I must have it returned to me, since there are no desendents of the dragons we gave to specifically."

Oh, very well, Elcyon huffed. I'll get your precious gem.

"Head east. You'll have to pass over many mountains in order to get to the cave in which it is located."

Okay, I got it down. Thanks for the help, Elcyon replied stiffly. She turned and dove into the water, heading out into the ocean and back out into the air.

Am I going to be going back and forth this many times, just to get the information I need?

Post Re: Dark Destiny
After a few hours of labor the hole was filled in with a few dozen large rocks and hundreds of smaller ones. Phal panted with the effort of having flown out for the large loads of stone, and rested for a moment on the rim of the now-filled hole. She took a deep breath and let a steady stream of super-heated starfire bathe the rocks, melting them together and solidifying her block. After about ten minutes she was finally finished.

Oh, the lengths I go to to maintain this place. It lasted for over fifty-thousand years before I got here, why fall apart now? she thought with an exasperated sigh. The work had put her mind off of the troubling events of the morning, however, and she felt better because of it. She stretched her wings out and flew back to the waterfall platform. She wasn't sure why, but she didn't feel like leaving yet.

Instead, she walked to the waterfall coming down the middle of the ceiling here and took a long, refreshing drink from the pool at its base. A few small rays of reddening light were coming in from a crack near the top of the cavern above the platform. Phal remembered when she had been attacked by the giant stone monster and had tried to escape through it. She hadn't tried to go back in it since then, and wondered if she could.

Curious, she flapped up to the small platform directly underneath the hole. Some old, crackling roots blocked her way in, but at the entrance they all looked broken and clawed up from her desperate climb past them. That had been over a year ago. She let out a long stream of starfire to burn away the remnants of the almost petrified roots, until the hole was clear of debri. Though she was slightly larger than she had been when she tried this before, it looked like she would be able to fit.

Suc'king in her sides, Phal squeezed into the hole and clambered her way up. Eventually it broke in two, one path leading up and into the light, and another gradually sloping on a more gentle angle. Phal took the one that went further into the mountain. The tunnel eventually widened enough so that she was not slithering along it like a snake, rather walking with her head held low.

Up ahead she could see a small room with her sight, and some magic within. Intrigued, she hurried forward and entered. She found a medium sized cave filled with gems, stones, tablets of writing, and several hundred other interesting artifacts, many of them magical. The veritable hoard of Unity's most treasured artifacts was laying right before her.

Amazed, Phal began to search the room. Her eyes lingered for a moment on a particularly pretty red gem with some odd magic circling it, but then wandered to the stand of stone tablets on another end. These tablets, upon further inspection, proved to be the countless years of the Unity dragons' most important research, and Phal nearly fainted in delight. There was so much knowledge here; it was almost unbelievable!

She immediately set to work reading the vast collection. The dragons of Unity had had a vast amount of information and research into magic. The spells seemed uncomparably ancient, and most had no trace of the Ancient Language involved. Most of the tablets detailed ways to use wild magic, and such knowledge would be especially useful to Phalynx, for she could not use the Ancient Language. She could only manipulate existing magic to her will.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
It had been two and a half days since Elcyon discovered that an evil resided within her, because of the evil the fire demons put there in the first place. It hadn't been the Nymph's fault for sending the evil energy into her egg, but she still couldn't believe that it happened. What was going to happen to her now? She was cursed, but she also had some evil too? Elcyon wasn't really thinking about it that much, though. She kind of forgot about it after the first day. She was actually thinking about Rodan, her adoptive father who mysteriously disappeared one day from the island. Elcyon would do anything to find him again, but first, she needed to use what she knew and find out what this evil and curse business was about.

The land had changed from grassland to desert, and Elcyon had a hard time flying for a while. Once she passed that part, it had become easier. The desert turned into mountains, and the air was much cooler than it was before. Elcyon was taking notes as she flew along, recording what she knew and what she learned in the past couple of days. She put down the names of the Nymph and prophetess in case it would become important later to remember.

Elcyon also put down her theories how the curse came to be. She thought that maybe the darkness that seeped into her egg, which turned her black, meant some kind of weird omen of misfortune. She had been told that many times that a black dragon born from a white egg would mean something bad would come to pass, though she wasn't sure what kind of bad things would happen.

Maybe nothing will happen at all, she thought to herself. Maybe the curse will eventually go away, and I won't have to worry about it anymore.

But somewhere deep within Elcyon's mind she knew that that wasn't the case. She was just going to have to solve the mysteries by herself, if that was what it took.

After a nice meal, Elcyon took off towards the mountains, where it was becoming twilight. The stars were coming out, and more brightly than Elcyon had ever seen them before.

What is making them shine this bright? she wondered.

Elcyon passed over a couple of mountains and was surprised to see a large valley with a river running through and a huge waterfall crashing thunderously against the rocks below. Trees were scattered around the land as well. Elcyon had never seen such a beautiful sight. Her breath was taken away from the sight of it.

And the stars shine brightest here... she murmured to herself.

Elcyon suddenly felt something, like an aura of some kind. It was a dragon, but she knew this dragon. It was so familiar, she would know the aura anywhere. She looked down into the valley, searching. She saw a silvery dragoness perched upon a rocky prominance that was above the large waterfall.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phalynx had spent over two days simply reading and researching the stone tablets she had discovered amongst the delightful treasure trove of artifacts. She had already begun experimenting with the spells and magical research that the dragons had discovered, and was in a particularly cheerful mood because of it. She had already had some excellent successes. She only left the cavern to hunt for a couple meals, which she ate while pouring over everything.

After a few days, she finally needed a break from the endless research. She flew along the underground river and out over the glorious waterfall just as the sun was setting. She bathed in the rich red glow now lighting the valley. It was odd how the trees seemed to take on a color reflecting the time of day. At dawn they always seemed to be golden, during the day they were bright green, at sunset they were a soft red, and at night they were a mysterious blue. Perhaps it was simply part of the valley's spell. There was so much magic woven into it that Phal couldn't tell the specifics.

As the first stars appeared, she wandered to her favorite place in the valley; the large stone prominance at the peak of the hill over the waterfall. It jutted out over the falling torrent and looked over the valley below, but it was much higher up than the other hills directly surrounding the river valley. The mountains in the distance surrounded this part of the valley in a rounded shape, and narrowed as the river flowed on.

As the sky darkened, Phal searched it, almost as if she was searching for the answers she had been seeking over the past few days. But the stars held no real answers; only clues, only feelings. She suddenly caught a feeling of another presence nearby, and glanced to the south.

She made out the form of another dragon flying closer, and it was a very familiar one. As the dragoness entered the airspace over the valley, Phal recognized her definitively. It was Elcyon.

Phalynx rose her large wings and let the wind gather beneath them, picking her up and carrying her over the valley. She flew happily towards Elcyon, knowing that this was one dragon who would definately appreciate her recent discovery. Elcyon! Hey! It's good to see you. You'll never believe what I just found in a cave over there. Would you like to see? she greeted her rather enthusiastically. Phal was usually a very calm dragon, but in this case she could make an exception.

Elcyon realized with excitement that the silver dragoness was Phalynx. She waited as Phal flew from her perch and joined her in the air.

Hello, Phalynx! Elcyon replied with a smile. It's nice to see you as well. Oh, you have something to show me? What is it? Sure, I would! Oh, and you'll never believe what I discovered about the curse! Would you like me to tell you on the way?

Elcyon knew that they would have a lot to catch up on, and she hoped that they would have enough time to fit the stories in.

Phal hovered next to Elcyon as she greeted her in return. You have made new discoveries too? That is good to hear. I would be happy to listen, my friend, she said with a smile, and began to fly lower, into the valley itself.

She drew even with the cave. The cave I am speaking of is within this one. You can follow me down here and please tell me what you've found out, Phal said, motioning for El to follow after her. She flapped into the cave, her wings so wide that they were close to brushing the tips of the tunnel. The swift river roared past underneath them. The air passed in a whoosh as she entered the cave, and the light from outside swiftly disappeared.

Elcyon nodded and followed Phalynx to the cave. She waited as Phal showed her the entrance and then followed into it. El thought the river in the cave was magnificent, and the view behind them was just a beautiful. It almost reminded her of the view she had back on her island, though she could see the ocean. Here, she could only see many trees and hills.

Yes. I’ve found out more about what exactly happened a while ago, Elcyon said, avoiding a stalactite on the way. There were fire demons that slaughtered the dragons living on the island. A few survived, but I do not know if they actually escaped or not. A Nymph named Kinna told me that she had come to save the island, by removing the evil energy from the Tree of Prosperity. That evil could not be contained, so she had to send it somewhere. It went to the closest living force, and that living force took the evil within itself. Elcyon looked down for a brief moment. I was that life force. Now…I’m not so sure what’s going to happen, because that evil that went inside me had nothing to do with the curse I have now. Kinna told me that I would have to find the source that started the curse, and get rid of it some way. She also told me to find a gem for payment, she added in a growl of frustration. She’s a nymph; they’re tricky I suppose.

Elcyon remained silent for a moment as she collected her thoughts in order to explain it to Phal. She didn’t want to trouble Phal with her problems, and it was something she had to do alone. She felt like she had to journey on her own so she could discover what it is that is causing this misfortune.

The tree is better now, and because she had retrieved the evil, it placed its own safety barrier around the perimeter of the tree, El stated. The tree will not allow anyone else to come close…except for me. Perhaps it was because I was born there and that I had to carry the burden of the evil that was there so long ago that it recognizes me…in a way.

Elcyon felt a little silly, sharing so much of this information. Anyway, what is it that you found in this cave? Is it some artifact or rune along the wall?

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phalynx listened intently to Elcyon's words, immediately deciding that she wanted to help. The fact that a great amount of evil had been absorbed by her egg was disturbing, but there had to be a way to remove it. I will help you, Elcyon. There must be a way to remove this evil, surely it cannot be permanent, she said.

They soon entered the massive cavern within, the walls so distant that all details were a blur. A small patch of light beckoned in the distant right corner, the waterfalls visibly flowing and dripping from the ceiling. Elcyon mentioned that the nymph she had spoken to wanted a gem in return. Well, there are lots of gems in this place. Who knows, you may find the right one here, Phal noted with a smile.

Oh, there are plenty of artifacts and stuff, but I found something amazing in a hidden cache, By that time they had reached the watery platform in the corner, and Phal was drifting towards the ceiling, Just up there. There are dozens of stone tablets with a huge amount of research written on them; research from over fifty thousand years ago, by dragons. It's nearly all about magic, and ways of controlling it other than the Ancient Language. You'll see, it's amazing. I think you will find it almost as interesting as I, and that's only because I can actually use it. Phal grinned and landed on the tiny platform in the corner. She began to scramble up the tunnel with a beckoning motion of her tail for Elcyon to follow.

I certainly hope so, Elcyon murmured, ducking her head shyly as they landed on the platform once Phal crawled up the wall. You don’t have to help. It is not your problem; it’s mine alone. I don’t want to trouble you. Besides, if there isn’t a way, then I don’t want to endanger you if something should happen. One odder thing…I had forgotten to ask what the color in my eye is from. You see, when I hatched, I looked down into my reflection to see myself, and I could see the purple within the gold begin to form. I don’t know, exactly, how it happened. I don’t know where it’s from. Perhaps you do? Elcyon wondered, hopefully. She doubted Phalynx would know, but she seemed knowledgeable.

She nodded, grinning. It would seem likely; this place is gargantuan. Who knows what kinds of things are hidden in a cave like this?

You found tablets that have the Ancient Language inscribed on them?! Elcyon exclaimed, her eyes widening. I thought the language died out a long time ago! I have never actually read anything that has many things written in the Language. Fifty thousand years?! Oh my…goodness, she breathed, not daring to believe it. And you say that you are the only one who can use it? Hmm…

Elcyon began to wonder what was on the tablets and was practically rumbling and shaking with excitement just at the thought of it!

Elcyon climbed up the wall after Phalynx, eager to see what waited in the chamber ahead of them.

Phal laughed. No, Elcyon. I will help you. You may not know this yet, but it is in my nature to always try to help my friends whenever they need it. And don't worry about endangering me; I can handle myself quite nicely, she said cheerfully. She crawled forward, until the cave was not two dragonlengths beyond.

Actually, the tablets are inscribed with the language of dragons. That language is even older than the Ancient Language. And I'm probably not the only one that can use the knowledge, I just can use it because of my ability to manipulate existing magic. Apparently, some of the dragons researchers involved in this could do a little with magic as well, she stated. She hurried forward and ducked into the entrance of the cave on the side of the tunnel, slithering through until she pulled herself up in the chamber.

This is the chamber where I found everything. I have all the tablets stacked up nicely over on that wall, according to category. I sorted the artifacts a little as well, but not much. Just enough to know where general sorts of things are located. You may investigate as you wish, Phal said, turning to grin at Elcyon. Her green eyes were practically gleaming in enjoyment at having satisfied so much of her curiosity.

Elcyon smiled. I can see it will be pointless to argue with you, she laughed quietly. If you're insistant on it, then I guess I have no choice do I?

Older than the Ancient Language you say? she murmured thoughtfully, following Phalynx closely behind. I see. Do you know of any other dragons who can manipulate this kind of magic? I mean, do you know them personally?

Elcyon inspected the cave when Phalynx announced that they had made their arrival. She could see the stone tablets stacked up against the wall, like Phal said, and the little baubles cluttered among the place. Elcyon wandered over to the tablets, her curiousity eating away at her self-control to the point where she couldn't contain it any longer. She grabbed the first one she could get her claws on, and gently examined the writing in her claw.

This is most intriguing, she whispered excitedly as she gazed over the ancient characters that were carved into the stones.

A glimmer of red caught her eye. Elcyon looked over to see a large gem the size of her claw nestled among other little jewels and coins. It was giving off some kind of faint aura, and El knew, from what Kinna described to her, was the gem.

Phalynx, that is the gem Kinna wanted! Elcyon exclaimed, setting the tablet down gently. I can't believe it! She said the nymphs gave it to a few dragons long ago. She says that now they have passed, she wants it back.

Elcyon walked over to the gem and examined it without touching. It was mesmerizing, just the beauty of it. I wonder what it's for? she said to herself.

Indeed you are, my friend. I'm sticking around for a while. As for other magic-using dragons, I know plenty, though I don't know any that can do it in my way. There are some that can actually use the Ancient Language and perform spells and such like a two-leg, such as my brother and sister. There are a ton that have magical abilities, though those are limited. And I think Arkel can use magic in a way similar to me, though I must manipulate existing magic. The tablets here were written for dragons who had a very slight control over magic, and mainly used artifacts and tools to perform it, she explained, glancing over Elcyon's shoulder to see what tablet she had picked up.

When the black dragoness exclaimed happily over the red gem, Phal laughed. Well, things do tend to turn up in the most unexpected ways. I have no idea what it's for; I haven't investigated a tenth of all these trinkets lying around, she mused, glancing at the pretty gem.

Elcyon laughed. I suppose that's a good thing? You know, I believe we're going to have many, many adventures together. But hey, I may be wrong, she added teasingly.

She became serious as Phalynx explained the uses of magic and the dragons who can use that magic from those tablets. She nodded. I see. How long did it take you to figure out you could learn how to use magic from the language?

Elcyon picked up the gem slowly, noting it was circular in shape, and that it was flat against one face. It seems like you could fit it against your forehead, she whispered. El placed it against her forehead, making sure it would stay, and turned to Phal, grinning. Well? What do you think?

Oh, I think we will, Phal said with a smile. How long did it take me to learn how to use magic, or from these tablets specifically? she queried, wondering what El had meant.

Oh, it looks lovely. Compliments your color nicely, in my opinion, Phal said with a laugh. She leaned her weight against one of the side walls, but as she leaned further, the wall suddenly gave way with a crash and a large cloud of dust. Phal stood up, coughing, and shook her head. She stared through the dust with her sight and made out the walls of a small chamber. Interested, she flapped her large wings hard to clear the dust. The brownish clouds parted, revealing several beautiful paintings on the walls. All were of dragons, and all seemed to have been painted by very talented artists. Phal marveled at the work. Wow. This is amazing! she exclaimed with excitement.

Oh, I meant how long it took you to learn magic from reading the language, Elcyon replied. I guess I meant, have you read the language before? If you have, how long did it take you to learn to control the magic? I suppose that's what I meant.

Why thank you, my dear Phal, Elcyon giggled. She was about to say something else, when Phalynx leaned against the side of the cave wall and the whole thing collapsed!

Oh my goodness! Phal, are you alright? El exclaimed, dropping the gem into her claw. She tried to get closer in order to examine Phal, but Phal was busy clearing away the dust, resulting El to start coughing. Once the dust had been cleared, Elcyon could see that there was another 'room' next to this one.

A secret room! Elcyon breathed. Leave it to Phal to stumble on something like this, she giggled. She examined the paintings that seemed to be preserved in mint-condition. What beautiful paintings! They must have been put here a while ago!

Elcyon went in for further inspection, but stopped dead in her tracks. As she peered at one of the paintings, she recognized one dragon among the rest; Rodan.

As Phal coughed a few last times, she glanced back at El. I learned to exert control over some magic a long time ago, without reading a language. I was less than a year old when I found out I could manipulate existing magic. As for this language, I'm not sure where I picked up the ability to read it. Maybe it's just in my blood, she whispered, in awe of the paintings. The detail was magnificent, especially considering that these were over fifty-thousand years old. They must have used magic in- wait, maybe this is the same dye the Tribe dragons use! Phal thought excitedly. A quick glance with her magic vision proved that assumption true.

As she was looking them over, she noticed a small one in the corner. A dragon shining with light was facing a dragon trailing darkness, about to fight. Phal looked closer, and saw that the shining dragon had green eyes. The evil dragon's eyes were masked in darkness. Odd... she thought. She turned to Elcyon to point it out when she noticed the dragoness had her eyes glued on one painting. What is it, El? Phal inquired, stepping beside her.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
I...understand... Elcyon was trailing off as she continued to stare at the painting that was hanging towards her left.

Was it Rodan? She wondered whether or not it was. It was a male golden dragon, with amber eyes that was sitting on a hill. He seemed proud and dignified, as though he were a scholor.

It's...it's definately him. It's...it's my...father. My adopted father Rodan, Elcyon barely breathed out the words. It...it could be him...but...can it? Can it? I don't...know anymore...he's gone! she cried.

Elcyon took in a couple of deep breaths. Breathe, El, she told herself. These paintings are fifty-thousand years old. There's no way...unless...he lied about his age?

Elcyon shook her head. Wait a minute, Phal, you were about to tell me something. What is it?

Phal watched with interest Elcyon's reaction to the painting. Her interest rapidly turned to concern when the anxiety in Elcyon's voice increased. It's alright, El. I'm sure there's an explanation for this. But yes, there is something that you might find interesting, but probably not as interesting as I think it is, Phal said. She stepped back and motioned with one claw the small painting in the upper corner of the chamber.

That picture, up in the corner. I'm almost positive that the silver dragon is me. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't. I'm not sure who the evil dragon is supposed to be, though, she stated, examining the painting even more to be sure. But there was no denying it; the dragoness was her. It possessed the same oversized wings, the same shade of green in the eyes, the same slim body form, the same short but powerful tail.

You're right, I'm sure there is, Elcyon replied with a sharp nod, though she knew she was trying to convince herself more than Phalynx. But I will find him one day, and then hopefully he can give me the answers I'm seeking.

Elcyon examined the painting Phalynx described to her. Indeed, the resemblence to the silver dragon in the painting was remarkably close to Phal, no doubt about it. On the other side...was a dragon of darkness.

It must be a prophecy. There's no way you're fifty-thousand years old, Elcyon laughed half-heartedly, but then sighed. She looked at the painting again. No, I am quite interested. Perhaps...it's telling the future. Perhaps you are going to meet your true enemy in an epic battle. This painting reeks of foreboding, she added in a slight shiver. Let's get out of here and go back to the stone tablets. This cave holds too many past memories.

Phalynx nodded, and turned to Elcyon. It wouldn't surprise me if it was some sort of prophecy. I wonder who this dragon is, though, Phal said. I wonder if Zephorion had anything to do with this. Maybe he made these paintings. He probably at least knows about them. Maybe I'll ask him sometime, Phal thought.

She turned towards the exit of the chamber. Yeah, let's go back to the other room. I'll have to come back later and see if there are any more paintings I recognize, she said, and walked forward. Phal stepped back into the room with the tablets and gazed around.

Elcyon began to wonder too. Maybe it was a dragon who came from a far away land who brought darkness and death to the land. She certianly hoped that she wouldn't have to meet a dragon like that. It gave her shivers just by thinking about it.

Thank you, she murmured as she followed Phal out of the chamber, giving the paintings one last look. I will find out what's going on here, she thought to herself. There's no way it was a couincidence that we found two paintings in here and I recognize two of the dragons in them. There's something going on here, and I intend to find out.

Elcyon followed Phal back into the original chamber and made her way over to the tablets. She began to read over them, memorizing their words of ancient wisdom. There were spells she had never heard of before written upon them, and she found that it only made her hungy for more knowledge.

Have you discovered anything of interest on these tablets, Phal? she asked the dragoness.

Phal smiled. A few things. I've only had a chance to put a little of it to practice, but not enough, yet. I expect a great deal of it will be useful. Quite a bit of this details techniques for harnessing and controlling magic. A couple of the tablets are even a little suspicious, as they deal with the Shadow Realms, Phal said, glancing towards a small pile of three of them of to the side. She had only just read those ones, and was wondering what sort of dragon could have dabbled with such evil and gotten out of it. Perhaps they hadn't. She wondered, for a moment, if perhaps Kumaraq had created that. He had been the evil responsible for the desertion of Unity.

Elcyon listened intently to what Phalynx had to say. Once Phal had finished by telling her about the tablets with dark magic, she looked over at the small pile. She walked over and read them quickly. As she read them, they made her tingle with fear, though she tried not to show it. She finished reading them and sat them back where they were.

You're right, she murmured, these are quite suspicious. No doubt some evil dragon wrote them. Or perhaps not. Maybe whoever wrote these did it to preserve all knowledge about our world, including the bad.

This cave certianly holds a lot of interesting mysteries, El stated, looking around. She picked up the ruby that she had placed down and examined it in her claw. Is there anything else you would like to look at Phal, or would you like to come with me back to Hora's place?

Phalynx smiled and shook her head. No, I just wanted to show you these. I'm glad you found them interesting. If you are satisfied, then let us be off, she said happily. Phal led the way out of the chamber and down the thin tunnel. She squirmed out of the last bit of it and landed catlike on the platform below. She ruffled her wings and then half spread them, walking to the edge of the platform. The large waterfall entrance area, and the cave beyond, gave her a wide space to dive off of the ledge.

Phal jumped off and spread her wings to their fullest extent. With a single flap she was propelled away from the light and into the darkness in the huge cavern. She pulled herself around and hovered, waiting for Elcyon to join her.

Alright then, let's go! Elcyon agreed excitedly, hurrying to catch up to Phal. She practically ran, hopping over some rocks in order to keep from stepping on them. She squirmed out of the tunnel and onto the platform, shaking herself and her wings. Elcyon did a running jump, and snapped her wings open to catch the air beneath her.

Elcyon needed to take a couple of flaps, but once she did, she was able to catch up to Phalynx quickly and efficiantly.

If you would like, I could have you meet Hora, Elcyon explained once she was leveled with Phal. She sees things no normal human being sees. She knew my name and was expecting me fifty years ago. Perhaps she could tell us more about what lies ahead. After that, I need to return this ruby to Kinna. Would you like to come with me? she asked, hoping she wasn't asking too much of Phalynx. Elcyon knew the dragoness probably had better things to do, but she could never really tell with Phal. Phal seemed to always be in the mood for an adventure.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Of course I'd like to go with you, El. I have nothing more pressing, she said with a smile. With a brisk flap of her wings she started off, leading the way out of the cavern.

This Hora person sounds a bit like the Namer. Maybe you should meet him someday, Phal mentioned as they approached the river. The roaring water beneath them tumbled over the gray stones, reflecting the faint light in blue rivulets over the cave walls. The beautiful dawn sky outside signalled perfect travelling weather. Phal emerged and spiralled around a little, enjoying the fresh, moving air. The cave air was too still, too quiet. Out here, the winds carried birdsong and the scent of prey.

I'm going to pick up some food quick before we leave, Phal said as she scanned the hills surrounding her valley. She never hunted within the valley itself; there wasn't a lot of prey, and she didn't want to taint such beauty with blood and fear. She located a small herd of mountain goat on the cliffs to the south, and flew towards them. Since they were sheltered by a hill, they didn't even notice her coming. Because she could see their heat signatures, she could twist her body around, dive, and pluck three of them off of the cliff without having to warn them.

She began eating one of them and tossed another to Elcyon. I'll save this one for a snack on the way, she said as she took a large bite. She then landed for a moment by the river, took a few huge gulps, and flapped away again.

Elcyon smiled at her friend. Thank you, Phal. That's awfully kind of you.
She followed suit, barely flapping her wings as she glided next to Phalynx.

The Namer? Elcyon wondered, confused. Who is this...Namer? Does he/she give out names or something? If Phalynx said Hora sounded similar to the Namer, could this Namer see things that normal people...could not see?

Elcyon noticed Phalynx glance around the valley, with a look of awe in her eyes. She looked around too, and marveled at the beauty of everything nature had provided. She shook her head slightly when Phal mentioned she would look for something to eat. Phal dove down, and as quickly as she left, she came back and presented three goats for them to eat.

Elcyon caught hers and took a smaller bite, savoring the flavor. Thanks, I was starving! she commented, smiling. Good idea, she commented when Phal suggested to keep one for a snack. El swooped over the river a few times to get herself a refreshing drink of water before flying higher up again.

I'll show you the way, Elcyon stated, flying towards the west. It will be about a two days flight though, but I know where to go. Hora lives in a small village, on the outskirts. It shouldn't be too hard to spot. Well, we best be off, she said as she flew onward, hesitant at first to make sure Phalynx was coming too.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phal grinned. In a way. The Namer is an ancient dragon. He was born in Unity, the city that you saw the entrance of. He knows the true names of anyone he sees, and he is often called upon to give clues to the true names of those who seek theirs. He helped me find mine, and he helped me with a lot more than that, she answered, remembering when she had last spoken to Zephorion.

Phalynx flapped off after Elcyon, easily keeping pace. Phal spent nearly all of her time travelling. She figured that if she were to fly to her usual travelling altitude, she would be able to reach the coast in only about a day, but that wasn't an option. El couldn't fly that high.

Phal didn't mind going slower, though. It gave them more time to enjoy the events along the way, and more time to discuss all of the new developments in their lives. The silver dragoness finished up her meal and licked the blood off of her claws. The other mountain goat she carried in one claw as they flew.

The northeastern mountain range at the edge of Du Weldenvarden was soon behind them, and there was nothing but a deep green below as the forest stretched along, almost reaching the coast. The winds were light, providing a smooth journey.

Over the course of the day Phal nibbled on the goat, tossing it to Elcyon whenever she wanted some. It lasted until late afternoon. How far into the evening would you like to fly, Elcyon? Phal asked. She could handle almost any length of aerial travelling, and so decided that El should choose how long they flew.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Elcyon thought about it for a few long minutes. He finds true names? Isn't that helping you becoming stronger or finding your inner power? Elcyon felt uneasy when Phalynx mentioned that he can see anyone's true name. Everyone? Including me? She gulped slightly. A part of her thought she wasn't ready to find her true name, especially since she barely knew anything about herself or her past. It was kind of unsettling, to know that someone could know your true name with just a glance. Does he tell you or...do you have to discover it for yourself?

El noticed that Phal was flapping her wings in slow strides, as if to keep pace with her. I don't fly that slowly, you know, she teased, grinning. My only problem is that I can't turn very well. Sure, I can fly fast...just not very gracefully. She proved it to Phal by flapping her wings faster until she was as straight as an arrow, flying at an incredible speed. She stopped, turned around, and met back with Phalynx with a smile. Unless you don't mind, that is, going slower? She admitted, shamefully, I can't keep up my speed for long; I have an extremely high matabolism, you see.

I think we should fly for as long as we are capable of, she replied, setting herself to her normal flying pace. If we travel as far as we can, and rest in between, we should get there in no time!

El looked down at the ruby in her claw that she had safely tucked away. I wonder though...would Hora be able to tell me about the ruby? she thought to herself. If she's something like the Namer...would she able to see through me?

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phal grinned. Oh, no. Zephorion's wiser than that. He makes you do the work; he just gives you a hint. And, well, I think you've pretty much touched on the reason why he stays by himself. Other dragons were more afraid and uneasy of him than you are, and some even reacted violently. He was an outcast. But he's much more respected now, by the few who know him, Phal said.

She flapped higher up and followed along behind Elcyon when she spoke of being able to fly fast. Oh, I don't doubt your speed. It's just, well, I travel literally all the time. I only spend a couple days at my home, and then I'm gone for months, always flying. And I'm used to flying at much higher altitudes, where it's harder to fly, she explained.

Actually, I'm not the fastest dragon in short distance flights. But I'm a very, very fast traveller, and I'm very agile as well. It all comes from these oversized things, here, she laughed, demonstrating a few small maneuvers with her ridiculously large wings. But I suppose my real advantage over other dragons comes from how high I can fly. Being radiation-resistant, I'm the only one who can really make it above the ozone layer for long periods of time without getting sick, she continued, musing about her own physical abilities.

The sun grew lower in the sky with every passing wingbeat. Phal could keep up flying almost indefinately, so she simply settled at a comfortable pace next to Elcyon, waiting for the black dragoness to choose their resting point. I'm actually trying to come up with a good technique for sleeping in flight, but I don't think we dragons have the instinct for it. We have to virtually start falling before we wake up, and I don't think we can adjust our altitude while asleep. Hopefully I'll come up with a solution for that, though. It would make travelling much easier, Phal noted, remarking on one of her points of research to pass the time while they flew.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Elcyon let it sink in what Phal had told her about the Namer, or also known as Zephorion. From the sounds of it, he had a pretty rough life. She almost felt sorry for being slightly afraid of what he could do. She was usually able to take things in and accept them for who or what they are.

I'm sorry for sounding so...ignorant, she whispered. I'm usually not that afraid, but as you could probably guess, I'm a little shy and so someone who could know something about me just by looking...I feel a little...embarrassed now, would be the correct term for it. She laughed slightly. I guess you think I'm like all the others who thought of him as...strange. I think now that I've heard more about him, he sounds like a good dragon. He may have a unique ability, but that doesn't mean he sounds bad for it.

I knew you didn't, Elcyon laughed. That's pretty amazing. I wish I had more spare time to do that. I start out flying for a few minutes, and then stop when I see something new. It's silly, I suppose.

That's cool, she commented as she watched Phal do some flying maneuvers. It's ironic. You have much larger wings, yet you fly so gracefully, and here am I with normal wings and a sleek body, and I can barely fly backwards without crashing into something, she giggled. Flying higher than the ozone is pretty impressive too. Sometimes I dream of doing that. I'll be asleep and I fly higher than the earth, past the stars and moons, looking for new adventures. She sighed. I truly envy you, Phalynx. I bet you treat your powers with great pride. Never take them for granted, though I suspect you don't, she added with a kind smile.

That would be quite interesting, to fly while asleep, Elcyon said as the sun almost went behind the horizon. You know, I think the closest time I fell asleep flying was when I was over the ocean. I went out too far, and it was getting late. I was riding a nice thermal, to the point where I didn't have to flap at all. I was gliding over the water, when my eyes drooped. I think I was barely asleep for a minute before I nearly crashed into the ocean! Elcyon was rumbling with laughter. Now that I look back on it, it was so reckless of me, yet humerous at the same time!

Elcyon sighed, once the sky had turned black and the stars were shining a little more dimmly than they had been in the valley.

It's about a half a day's flight to Hora's place, Elcyon informed Phalynx. We should probably take a break at least and then -

What was that? she asked, when something dark and foreboding disturbed the air around them. Can you feel that, Phalynx?

Post Re: Dark Destiny
That's alright. Now that I've told you a little more about Zephorion, there's no reason to fear him. Other dragons did not know anything about him, except for his abilities, and it made them afraid. All I knew before I met him was that he could help me find my true name, and that was good enough for me to want to meet him, Phalynx said, drifting along beside Elcyon.

Phal nodded when El spoke of her flight skills. Oh, certainly. There's no pride involved, though. I have my talents, and my other abilities, for a reason. And whether or not that reason is predetermined, I will use my gifts for it, she said with a solid nod of her head. Though she enjoyed being able to do the things she said, she knew that enjoyment was not the main reason she could do them. It was her duty to use her gifts to the advantage of others; of the innocents and those fighting for the side of good.

Phal laughed at Elcyon's story. I suppose that's just the kind of example that illustrates my point. It would be wonderful if we could find a way around that, though. Maybe some sort of spell to give our wings the needed adjusting capabilities... she mused, trailing off. A sudden burst of shadow magic rushing past them caught her off guard, and she barrel-rolled to the right as an automatic reflex. I don't know what that was! Does anyone evil know we're here? she called to Elcyon, glancing around them in surprise.

Oh, I see, Elcyon said, smiling. Yes, that's what I meant by using your powers. You know, since they're not average powers, you must use them for a purpose, she added with a smile.

Elcyon flew up towards Phalynx, in order to keep themselves close. She didn't want to lose her in case something came up. So it wasn't my imagination. I'm not aware of anyone or anything evil knowing we're here, she replied quickly, glancing around the place. Something glimmered below her, catching her attention. It appeared to be the glow of fire.

Phalynx! Look below! Elcyon squinted her eyes to get better detail on what lay below them. Oh...no! she cried.

They were strange creatures, their outer bodies seemed to be set ablaze. They moved quickly, yet they were setting things on fire for fun. She could hear their insane giggling. There were only ten of them, and they seemed to be the size of humans. There was something that set Elcyon on edge, and didn't know why she knew what they were, but from instinct.

They were fire demons.

Phalynx followed Elcyon's gaze below, and her infrared vision immediately flared up brilliantly. The creatures below her were aflame, and leaving their fire everywhere. Her magic vision revealed more, and it was even worse. Elcyon, they are made of a combination of fire magic and shadow magic... are they fire demons? she questioned, turning to El with concern in her eyes. If they were, the two dragons would be hard-pressed to defeat them. According to Elcyon, not even all the dragons of her home island had been able to. Of course, Phal wouldn't let that stop her. She would destroy these things. After all, part of their magic was shadow, which she could easily obliterate.

Y...yes, she barely whispered. I'm so glad that there are a few...what would have happened if there were more of them?

Elcyon wasn't sure what to do. She didn't want to attack them, but then again, she really had no choice. What if they hurt someone nearby? She couldn't just let her ancestors' adversaries walk away!

I...we have to attack, she said, not very determined but she did her best. I'll see if I can distract one of them and see how tough they are.

Elcyon flew down and ended up tripping one of the fire demons from their feet, resulting to them lying on the ground. She pulled back up, feeling a little more determined when something began to spread over her heart, mind, and soul. She could barely think straight, only that she knew that she was supposed to fly. Suddenly, Elcyon was seeing red. Then, she couldn't really control her limbs anymore.

She was not Elcyon anymore. This dragon was ready to kill, and to kill anything in her path. She looked at Phalynx with a dead look in her eye.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
As soon as Elcyon finished speaking, Phalynx dove in. She began burning away one of the fire demons with her starfire, its shadow magic immediately dissolving with the force of the light. Without the shadow, the flame could not hold itself together, and the creature exploded in a shriek and a burst of flame.

Phal turned to glance at El, but reeled back. Elcyon! Elcyon, what's wrong?! she exclaimed, the look in the dragoness's eye putting dread in her heart. Something was terribly wrong. Phal was immediately concerned for her friend.

Elcyon could barely hear Phalynx's voice, but she had no control. She couldn't see what she was doing, it was as if her vision was being cloaked by a shadow.

Suddenly, Elcyon's eyes began to glow. They began to glow with an evil light, and then that's when, from her mouth, erupted some form of shadow breath. She aimed the breath, at first, at the fire demon below, which disintergrated into a pile of ash. Then, she looked back at Phalynx, and smiled cruelly.

Soon you'll discover the darkness, she hissed, though her voice was disoriented. Elcyon opened her mouth again, shooting shadow breath straight at Phalynx this time.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phalynx flared up the light eminating from her scales in alarm, an automatic response to danger. Something bad was happening to Elcyon; it seemed like she was being overtaken by darkness. The dark magic was condensing within her, and then was suddenly thrust outwards as she blasted a column of shadow magic at Phal. The silver dragoness reacted in time, shielding herself with a huge blast of starfire to counter the dark flame. The light burned away the darkness, and Phal was easily able to hold it up. But she dared not strengthen her fire breath for fear of hurting her friend. There had to be a way to rid Elcyon of this darkness, other than killing her. Phalynx would never kill one of her friends.

Elcyon came to grips with reality, because somewhere inside she realized what she had done. She blinked a couple of times and her eyes returned to normal. She looked around, confusingly, and then stared at Phalynx.

Um, do you mind telling me what just happened? she asked, sort of dazed. All I can remember was going after the demon and then...now I find you glowing. What happened?

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phalynx cut off her fire as soon as she saw the dark magic around Elcyon begin to dissipate. El seemed confused, and Phal realized that the darkness had, in a sense, taken control of her. The darkness within you... it took control of you for a few moments. You attacked a fire demon with shadow fire breath, and then you attacked me. I'm not sure why it happened just now, though... she said, not able to explain fully herself what had happened. Phal was just as perplexed as Elcyon, even though she had watched the darkness take control of her friend.

Elcyon's eyes widened in alarm. What did I do?! she practically shouted. Oh no, Phal, are you okay? Goodness, I don't remember a thing! Are you sure? I mean, I hope I didn't purposely try to get you, and now I feel just awful! she cried. I am truly sorry.

She realized she was babbling and quickly ceased her chatter. She looked down at the ground, and could see the fire demons fleeing from the scene, cackling all the while. What was their intention? she wondered.

Elcyon shook her head. We'd better go to Hora now. I'm sure we can make it if we hurry. She added in a whisper. You'd better stay further away from me too, so in case if something like that ever happens again, you won't be attacked by me.

Phal shook her head. It's alright, Elcyon. No need to worry about it. I can take care of myself, she said with a reassuring smile. She flapped over to El. I will have plenty of warning if you turn again, now that I know what to look for. So, there's no reason to worry, she added as she joined her friend. She frowned at the fleeing fire demons below, but knew that their current mission had to come first. She could hunt down fire demons at a later time.

Now, let's go visit Hora, and I'll just keep a closer eye on your magic, El. We should find out a way to prevent that from happening again, she said with determination as she flew after Elcyon.

OOC: *whispers* Draco, it's your turn on A New Discovery. lol. And I hope you don't mind if I speed things up a bit...

IC:

If you're sure... Elcyon murmured, still doubting herself. She couldn't help but feel the heavy guilt that now lay on her heart. She felt that no matter what she would do, she would never be able to rid the feeling.

As Phalynx joined her, Elcyon gave her a small grin. I see there's no changing your mind. I'm glad I have you as a friend. I just hope that there won't be a next time, she added in a small whisper.

They flew for another few hours, Elcyon occupied by her own thoughts. She remembered the way, even though it was dark. The land was very familiar, and pretty soon, right as the sky began to turn a light pink, Elcyon could see the outline of Hora's home.

We've arrived, she stated, looking at Phalynx as she tried to hide the saddness from her eyes. If you're ready, let's head on down.

IC: Phal grinned. Don't worry. We'll find a way to rid you of "next times," she laughed. She followed El over the land, watching as it transitioned from forest to mountain, and then to ocean. In the distance, the somewhat familiar island came into view.

Phal followed El's gaze to a small village. Certainly. Lead the way; I'm anxious to speak with this Hora, she replied, smiling in the hopes of lifting Elcyon's spirits. She followed the black dragoness down.

Elcyon smiled in return. She descended upon the land at least fifty feet away from Hora's place. She gave Phalynx a quick nod and walked quickly towards the house.

Hora? Are you there? Hora? Elcyon called out.

She peered in through the window, looking around to find some sign of life. Nothing in the house stirred.

That's weird. I wonder if she,

Elcyon was interrupted by the sounds of a shout. She quickly went around the house to find Hora lying up against the side, her breathing shallow.

Hora, are you...?

Elcyon examined her more closely. She could see Hora's eyes open, though white was covering them. Her body was going stiff, and she rithered as she mumbled.

Phalynx, she's having a vision, Elcyon whispered.

Hora mumbled, The sky will be cloaked in shadow, and light as we know it will have to fight to win its keep.

OOC: If you don't like the prophecy, I can always edit it. :)

OOC: lol it's your prophecy. You know what's gonna happen and what we can't reveal yet, so I'm cool with it. :)

IC: Phal landed gently near Elcyon, and followed her to the back of the house. She immediately grew worried when she saw the old woman laying on the floor, but was reassured a little when El explained it. A vision? Seems awefully violent... she thought, still slightly worried.

Phal paid close attention to the old woman's words. Light will have to fight to win its keep... that has to mean something important, she thought, carefully memorizing Hora's words in case they proved crucial.

OOC: Okay, just making sure. ;)

IC:

Yes, it does seem that way, Elcyon murmured. Hora, are you okay? Can you tell us what happened in your vision?

Hora blinked when she realized two dragons were standing next to her. "Oh...oh, Elcyon, it's you. What are you doing here?" She looked at the silvery dragoness who looked at her curiously. "Ah, and this must be Phalynx, warrior of the stars. I have been expecting you, though you're late. A few years late to be exact. I suppose you can't rush destiny," she sighed. She looked at Elcyon and raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean, a vision? The last thing I remember is going unconcious and the next thing I knew I woke up to find you two."

You mean you don't remember the prophecy? Elcyon asked, worried.

"If I did, I would have told you. What's all the hub-bub?"

You mentioned that the sky will become cloaked in shadow and light will have to fight to earn it's keep...do you know what that means?

Hora stood up and stroked her chin. "Hmm...no, I'm afraid I don't. It sounds very curious though, very curious indeed. Ah, and I see you've found the Eye of Posidon," she added when she spot the gem that Elcyon had gripped in her claws. "Kinna is definately expecting that back."

Eye of Posidon?

"Posidon was the name of the water nymph king long ago," Hora explained. "He gave it to a group of dragons as a peace offering. Now that the dragons are dead, I assume Kinna will want the gem of her people back."

What does it do? Elcyon wondered.

"It holds powerful properties, though I'm sure Kinna will explain them to you when you return it to her."

Wait, there's something else that we need to tell you before we go, Elcyon interrupted, looking at Phalynx.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phal watched Hora come awake with interest, and immediately address her in familiar tones. I'm only a few years old... she muttered just a little bit indignantly when Hora accused her of being late. Phal was usually right on time when she was needed, and didn't enjoy hearing otherwise, no matter how trivial the topic was.

Not all of those dragons are dead. Well, some of their descendents live, anyways, Phal couldn't resist pointing out. She couldn't allow the memory of Unity to fade so easily as simply mentioning a bunch of deceased dragons. It seemed an insult to their legacy, and to the existing descendents of Unity. But, of course, the Tribe itself had little use for this gem. They now lived even farther from wherever the sea nymphs once dwelled, and there were no longer any possibility of alliance, since the two allied parties no longer seemed to exist. The Eye of Posiden belonged in Kinna's hands.

Phal nodded when Elcyon spoke. Indeed. We were hoping you could give use your aide, wise one, she said with a sincere smile.

Elcyon nodded in agreement with Phal. Yes, could you please help, Hora?

Hora blinked a couple of times. "Is that so? Well, that's new to me. Huh. Well, then I'm corrected then. Some of their descendents live, however, it should be returned." She turned to Elcyon. "I will personally take the gem to Kinna myself, you two need to go in a more important direction."

She looked at Phal with curiousity. "Oh? You need my help? Tell me of your troubles, young'ns," she encouraged. "Ah, wait...you're here to tell me of the paintings you saw back at your valley, am I correct, Phalynx?" she asked.

Elcyon was surprised at the old woman. She even knew what they were about to ask! It didn't happen last time this quickly. She looked at Phal and smiled. Would you like to explain?

Phalynx nodded. Sure. If you don't mind, I think we should make sure she knows about the incident with your darkness, though she probably already does, she said privately to Elcyon.

Phal turned back to Hora. Yes, we should start with the paintings. We saw one of me, and one of an evil-looking shadow dragon. It was like we were facing off. And I don't know if it's important, but Elcyon saw one of Rodan as well. And then, on the way back here, we encountered a group of fire demons. The darkness within Elcyon took hold of her for a moment, and she attacked me with a shadow breath power. But she reverted to normal almost immediately. Can you explain any of this? she questioned the old woman, eager to know if there was anything else that Hora could tell them.

Elcyon agreed with Phal, and waited for her to explain what has been happening over the past few days. Once she finished, Hora frowned in concentration.

"Hmm, this is quite serious," she murmured. "From what I know about Elcyon's past and the nymph did to extract the evil from the tree of prosperity, it could be that the evil is slowly beginning to surface as it battles against Elcyon's good-natured heart and the darkened heart that lies dormant. Of course, it could also be a part of it. Another part is of the curse that was placed on her." She looked directly at Elcyon. "You need to take precautions. Though you may not know what is going on, I'm sure Phal will be able to help you along the way. I know of Phal's starfire, and I'm sure she can protect herself well," Hora added with a wink at Phalynx.

"As for the paintings, I know not what transpired there. For all I know, Phalynx, it can mean that you will be facing your unknown sworn enemy in a battle against light and darkness. I'm just making a guess here, but that's what it sounds like to me."

What about Rodan? Elcyon couldn't help but whisper.

"He disappeared, didn't he?" Hora asked. Elcyon nodded. "I don't know what could have happened to him, or why there was a painting of him. However, if you want to find more of your answers, there is a cave far away from here, towards the south-east. It contains a great evil presence that wards off anyone who should come near. That is all I can say."

When Hora finished her explination, Elcyon began to feel uneasy. She knew that this was something to do with the darkness in her, but she never knew it could manifest.

Well, thank you, Hora, she said grateful. Phalynx, are you ready to head out then?

Phal smiled. We should take you to meet Zephorion, sometime, Hora. I'm sure you two would like each other, she grinned. She turned back to Elcyon, more serious, and nodded, following after her. Thank you for your help, Hora. I hope to meet you again in the future. If this goes well, I plan on it, she turned her head back and gave the wise woman a sad smile. She didn't say that if she never returned, it would probably mean she was dead.

She walked outside and waited for Elcyon to join her. I'm not sure what will happen when your dark side manifests, but I know I will try my hardest to find a way to rid you of your dark side. Or, at least prevent it from surfacing at all, she stated with determination, Shall we proceed to this cave?

Hora smiled at Phalynx. "Ah, yes, I've heard many tales about him. Perhaps I should, one day..."

She trailed off and watched the two young dragons head off. "Oh, we will definately meet again someday," she stated mysteriously. "Be careful, you two! There were many things that happened at that cave! Watch out for each other!"

Elcyon smiled and waved and then looked back at Phalynx. Thank you, Phalynx. You don't have to do this, but you're still willing. I'm grateful of you. Yes, let's hope we can find a way to rid this evil...along with the blasted curse.

She opened her wings, and nodded. Let's hit it.

Phal smiled at Elcyon. Of course I'm willing to help a friend. Now, how far to the southeast is this cave? she asked, flapping her huge wings a couple times to get aloft and find a thermal to rise up with.

If it's really far east, then I'll probably be a big help finding it. I've travelled that land before... I remember visiting caves, but only one truly filled me with fear. But that was because of what lurked within, not the cave itself, she said, shuddering a little. The things she had faced there... even now she didn't know how she had been able to get out of that place with her life, and her soul, still intact.

Hmm...that's interesting, she replied. If we needed to go to a specific cave, Hora would have given us directions. Maybe she knew you've been there before. Where was this cave you've discovered?

Phal's head drooped. You're probably right, it could very well be that cave. Going there will not be a happy occasion, my friend. Many terrible thigns happened in that place, she said sadly. So many dragons had died there, and they had not been quick deaths either.

If we are to try that cavern, then I know exactly where to go. And it is a system of caves, so we can't be sure which one specifically Hora meant when we go in, but we'll probably know when we get there, she stated, turning to look at Elcyon. Her green eyes seemed older than her age of a few years, at that moment. More as if she had hatched out of her egg right away and had been alive for almost fifty thousand years.

Follow me, and I will show you that dark place. We must be very careful getting there. The Scorched Lands are one place that I would expect there to be fire demons, and worse things... Phal said, angling her wings to the southeast.

I'm sorry that this will have to be a reliving nightmare for you, Elcyon whispered, giving Phalyx a comforting pat. Maybe this trip will be a tad more plesant than last time, friend.

A system of caves? she echoed. Yes, as I said, if this is the cave, Hora would have given us directions of we could not find our way. But perhaps we will, and maybe we'll discover what it was in those paintings we saw back near your valley.

Right. Lead on, Elcyon said a little more cheerfully, trying to boost Phalynx's spirits up. If there are any of those things, then we'll just have to take them down, won't we?

Phal laughed. Oh, I'm not afraid of fighting or anything. If any evil creature shows its face, we'll take care of it easily. I'm just not anticipating visiting that place of sadness again. You'll know part of the reason just by being in it, Phal said, picturing the main cave.

I'll have to tell you that story, some time. It was the first big mission I've ever gone on by myself. And luckily, I came through it alright, she said with a smile. She drifted slowly higher, a little bit closer to her normal travelling altitude, but still nowhere near. Obviously she couldn't travel that high at the moment.

OOC: You wanna let other people join after we visit the cave?

OOC: Sounds good to me! :D

IC:

Elcyon nodded. That's what I meant, I suppose, but yes, whenever you would like to explain, I'll listen.

I look forward to hearing it. Now then, how long does it take to reach the Sourching Lands? she wondered.

Elcyon noticed that once they began to head south-east, the Hadarac Desert was below them, but it began to change. The way the land was formed was different to Elcyon and she had never been this far south before.

Phal turned back. Scorched Lands. It will take longer than our flight to Hora's place. We must travel across the Hadarac Desert north of the Beors until we reach the Az Ragni. Once there, we must travel southeast for the same distance before we reach the area of the Scorched Lands that the caverns are in. It'll take about a day and a half to reach the Az Ragni. Probably almost two days from there to the caverns, Phal explained, making sure to go into detail.

If you want, I can draw something of a map for you in your journal. That way if you ever want to find me again, or ever need to go east, you'll know the main landmarks and distances, she offered.

Ah, Scorched Lands, my mistake, Elcyon laughed. I see. Boy, that will take a while.

Elcyon nodded, smiling. Of course, be my guest! Actually, I draw quite a few maps wherever I go somewhere new. I drew one of when Equinox and I went to Hora's from a certian point, she replied. Elcyon handed the journal to Phal and then the pen. Place it wherever there's a blank spot.

Phal grinned. Yeah, but you'll see some cool things on the way, so the trip will be worthwile. I hope, she said, still thinking of how dangerous the Scorched Lands were. Solarae had warned her about them, and the small dragoness had been right in doing so.

Thanks. Hopefully this map will come in handy some day, she replied, opening the journal to a blank page. She let her subconscious control her flight, adjusting her wings according to wind currents, while she took the pen in her claw. It was a bit awkward; Phal didn't write very often, but her nimble talons quickly got the hang of it.

She quickly sketched out the eastern parts of Alagaesia, mainly the areas even with the Az Ragni and Edda Rivers. She then began her sketches of the lands further east. First she drew the most prominant landmark she knew: the Burning Sun Sea. She drew the east-to-west mountain chain above that; the dwelling place of the Tribe dragons. Then she drew her own north-to-south mountain chain in the northeastern area of Du Weldenvarden. She put small gap in the mountains with a river inside to show her valley. Then she turned her attentions south, and drew in the area known as the Scorched Lands. There were a few smallish mountain chains, all volcanic. And there were lava fields, both molten and cooled. And of course, the dry, ash-ridden deserts surrounding the volcanoes. It was a terrible place. The last thing she did was put a few marks showing where the Red Desert was (in between her mountain range and the Tribe's).

When Phal next looked up from her work, she realized it had been almost an hour. Apparently drawing maps took a lot of time, especially considering how nicely Phal had tried to make hers. She grinned. Here you are, my friend. One map of the major eastern areas, as far as I know them, she stated, handing the journal and pen back.

Elcyon took the journal back, looking through the drawings and memorized them as well as she could. This is done quite well, Phalynx. You should think about becoming a cartographer someday after all of this battling is done. It could help the dragons and anyone else who were trying to find their way through Alagaesia.

She let her wings grow still as she glided with the warm wind, enjoying the sun on her back.

They traveled over the Hadarac Desert for about a day and a half, until they reached the Az Ragni River.

Far below them, a small glittering band ran from north to south, revealing the location of the Az Ragni River. If the atmosphere had not been clouded with a dusty haze from the Hadarac, Phal thought she could probably fly high enough to see the Beors in the south and the point where the Az Ragni and Edda Rivers joined. However, the horizon was blotted out in a yellowish blue.

We should stop for a drink and to hunt, Elcyon. A few hours more flying to the east, and there will be almost nothing to eat or drink. The Scorched Lands... there is no water, except for a few hidden pools beneath the rocks, Phal explained, turning to El. Without another word, she dove, heading straight towards a group of antelope grazing below. Because of the dust, they were completely invisible in normal lighting. But Phal's infrared vision revealed them, and she now pulled out of the dive in time to kill four of them. Three with her claws, and one with a powerful hit of her tail. She carried the antelope over to the edge of the river and stopped to take a huge drink.

Drink as much as you can, and eat your two antelope while we fly. It will be almost two days before we can get anything else to drink, she said with concern as she raised her head.

Elcyon took in the new scenery, as she flew next to Phalynx, though there was not much to look at. It was extremely hot, and it made Elcyon uncomfortable, for the air around her was dry. She was only used to humid weather, though the heat was okay.

That's a good idea, she commented. Where do you suggest... Elcyon cut herself off when Phalynx suddenly dove beneath the haze below them. She was beginning to wonder why she did this, though figured that, with one of her visions, Phal probably spotted something below. When Phal came back up, she presented four antelope in her grip. Ah, good catch, and thank you, she said as she took two of the antelope.

Elcyon wandered over to the river and drank her fill until she could barely drink anymore. Then she took off into the sky, joining Phal as she ate to her heart's content.

Don't worry, I'm often used to going a couple of days at the most without anything to eat, Elcyon assured her. When I explored over the ocean, I would often go so far out just to explore that I would often forget to eat. But you're right, in this heat, we need to be full on nourishment.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phal began munching on her first antelope. The second she would save and eat after their first day of flying, though the first seemed gone all too soon. The dusty landscape sped below them, mostly looking all the same.

The rest of their journey to the borders of the Scorched Lands passed uneventfully. Their progress was marked only by the ever increasing heat, and the increasing darkness. The ash and smoke that constantly poured from the volcanoes at the center of the Scorched Lands blotted out the sky, putting the land into a state of constant twilight. And this was only the boundary area.

Welcome to the Scorched Lands, Elcyon. This heat is only the beginning. It will get darker, hotter, drier, and much more dangerous, Phal warned grimly. The air already seemed choked with dust.

That night, they saw a terrible, but constant sight of the Scorched Lands. In the distance, a faint red-orange glow could be seen on the horizon. It was the glow created by the vast lava-fields of the interior, the lava fields that filled the valleys between volcanic mountain chains. Phal continued flying, though it was getting very difficult. The air was choked with ash, and the smell of sulfur permeated the atmosphere.

They kept going, getting closer and closer to the lava fields. Eventually, there was only one razor-edged stone ridge left between them and the molten plain. Phal came to a rest atop the ridge, placing her claws carefully to avoid cutting them on the sharp rocks. There is a small pool of water beneath this ridge. Luckily, it hasn't been polluted by the sulfur, but we must be careful. Other creatures come here to drink as well, and most of them are very dangerous. Stay close to me, she spoke, picking her way cautiously towards a suspicious looking hole in the rocks up ahead.

Elcyon tried to enjoy her time flying with Phalynx, and trying to find some sense of adventure of it, but the more they ventured, the harder it was for her to have higher spirits. The Scorched Lands were so desolate and hot, it made her feel weary. This place was not meant for any normal dragons to just wander around for the fun of it. It set her on edge, but not as much as she thought it would.

She followed Phalynx to some sharp-looking rocks and landed there next to Phal. Elcyon followed her closely on the ridge, her tongue passing over her dry lips in anticipation.

I guess we should be on our guard then, since I noticed how unrelatively quiet it's been since we've arrived. The air is so still, it's like a storm is beginning to approach, she whispered, her eyes darting around to make sure that nothing was coming at them. Okay, I think once we're done, we should probably head out and move as quickly as possible towards this cave. If we hurry, maybe we won't have any encounters, though I doubt it, she added very quietly, being pessimistic about it. Elcyon was shocked at herself for thinking that way, usually she was a more positive dragon rather than looking for something to pick at. She really hoped Phalynx didn't hear her so that she could keep thinking positive.

Phal smiled. If we do encounter anything, I'm sure we can handle it, she said confidently. She placed her feet carefully as she headed over towards the hole, which looked rather like the very large burrow of some ground-dwelling creature. It was not a place anyone would willingly go into unless they knew there was water within, or unless they wished to make a quick hiding spot.

Phal descended into the darkness. She could see the chamber where the water lay beneath them. Nothing was within, except a few cave rats. They came into the relatively cool chamber, a welcome relief from the heat, and approached the pool. With a quick sniff, Phal determined that the water was still safe to drink, and she began taking in long draughts. She moved to the side as Elcyon joined her.

A low growl echoed in the cavern from behind them. Phal jolted upright and swung her body around, baring her teeth in return. Standing at the entrance of the exit tunnel was another dragon. He glared threateningly at them, still growling low. This is my cave. My water. Kumaraq no longer owns this place, it is mine now, he hissed possessively, stepping forward with his head low and his wings raised.

Kumaraq is no more because of me, Phal stated, her eyes narrowed, So if this water belongs to anyone, it's me. With that, her scales suddenly illuminated, and the chamber was filled with intense silver light. This didn't seem to phase the dragon, and he advanced even further.

Of course. I mean, there's two of us, what's the chance of not being able to handle it? Elcyon meant it as a rhetorical question, but she was really starting to ask herself that question as she entered the cave. It was a relief on her body as she stepped into the cool air of the cave, and the pool of water looked so refreshing Elcyon licked her lips in anticipation.

A low growl interrupted her thoughts, and she heard Phalynx hiss menecingly. Elcyon instantly turned her head, her eyes narrowed as she flexed her claws out as she readied herself in case she had to defend herself. I wonder who that dragon is? she wondered to herself as Phal tried to illuminate the cave with her scales, though it didn't seem to bother the dragon none. He was ready to defend his turf, even if it meant getting rid of them.

No! I won't let that happen!! Elcyon shouted in her mind, as she could suddenly feel something overtake her mind again. Her vision was growing weaker and her body had no control. Oh no, Phal, it's happening again, she said quietly and calmly, though her tone was dead.

Elcyon bowed her head for a moment, before the dragon that was nothing like Elcyon emerged. She lifted her head again, this time her eyes flashing and glowing angrily at the dragon. She opened her mouth and a jet of shadowy flame emerged, hitting the dragon on target. She didn't know what was going on, for it was harder to keep concious in her un-controlled mind like before.

The dragon laughed at Phalynx. It was obvious he had seen her light before. You think your tricks scare me? I know who you are. Perhaps now I will finish what my master could not, he snarled menacingly. Phal only increased her light, prepared to attack him.

Suddenly, the dragon's eyes fli'cked to Elcyon, a little nervously. Phal heard her words a split second later, as she was turning to glance at her friend. The dark magic was seeping into her, building, preparing for release.

You need to leave, now, Phal commanded to the other dragon. This wasn't the place for him anymore. But it was already too late. The shadow magic being commanded by Elcyon was suddenly released in a powerful blast of shadow breath at the intruding dragon. The first blast hit him squarely in the chest, and he fell back with a surprised roar.

Phal hissed at him again, and blasted starfire at his feet in an attempt to drive him away. Faced with the threat of two dragons with powers, he scrambled up the tunnel in haste. Phal turned to Elcyon, prepared to fend off her shadow breath again if she needed to.

The darkness that seeped in Elcyon's mind turned to Phalynx, her eyes narrowing with cruelty and coldness.

Nothing can exist without darkness, and power is the only key to that, she purred, taking a step forward. The darkess was attempting to lure anything that held light in their hearts away from it. The coldness itself could not handle it.

Elcyon blinked a couple of times, and she could feel it. Her own heart was battling with the darkness, and, for now, she came out victoriously. She opened her eyes wide and took a step back, realizing that, even though she could not remember, it was happeing.

It happened again, didn't it? she whispered, looking after the dragon who had made his escape. I didn't try to attack you again, did I? I think, after you tell me what happened, perhaps we should move on, and of course, after we have a drink. What do you think, my friend?

Phal dimmed the light eminating from her scales in relief. No, you didn't try to attack me. But I guess our combined powers finally frightened that dragon away. You attacked him, and then I blasted starfire near him. That was enough to give him doubt about attacking us, she said with a smile.

Yes, it's always best to keep moving in this land. I wasn't going to let us linger here anyway. Besides, that dragon could be back with more, she replied. Phal turned back to the water and drank as much as she could. The cool liquid dripped pleasantly off her muzzle as she raised it. She paused by the entryway and used her sight to make sure there were no more threats above. Seeing that the way was clear, she glanced back to make sure Elcyon was following and ascended out of the dark hole.

The world above was hardly any brighter, and illuminated by a red glow. To the northeast, a vast field covered in molten rock stretched for miles. In the distance, a few dark shapes that were volcanoes lay. A few of them had bright red-orange streaks on their sides, revealing the lava that flowed out of them and onto the plain below. It was a daunting sight. Phal couldn't imagine why anyone would want to live here.

Elcyon was relieved that nothing bad happened to Phal. Or, at least, she didn't try to do anything like attacking her. It was bad enough that she couldn't remember what happens when she undergoes her dark change, but when she tries to attack a friend...it made her feel uneasy.

She drank the cool, refreshing water from the pool and practically sighed in relief as the liquid rushed down her parched throat. Once she had her fill, Elcyon followed Phal away from the hole and out into the blistering heat once again.

Elcyon thought she perfered the cool hole than what lay before her. There were volcanos and lava fields, that sweltered her as she passed over them. Phal, do you know how much farther it is to this cave that you spoke of? Do we still have a little while ahead of us?

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phal awaited Elcyon's emergence from the water cave, and then lifted her wings. The powerful updrafts from the heat were enough to lift her away from the jagged rocks without her even having to flap. She nodded at El's question. Yes. It will take about a half hour to cross this lava field. Do you see the largest of the volcanoes over there? The cave is located inside of it, she spoke, angling her wings to catch another thermal and rise even higher.

The half an hour passed rather quickly, as both of them wanted to cross the lava field as swiftly as possible. Well, Phal did anyway, and she thought Elcyon must as well. The volcano loomed constantly in the distance, a perpetual behemoth that threatened to erupt at any moment. However, Phal could tell with her sight that the flow of magma into this particular volcano was weak. Though it was the largest volcano, it was also one of the oldest active ones. There were no red streaks on its flanks.

Finally, the heat dimmed just a little as they finished crossing the lava field and reached the slopes of the volcano. Up close, it was obvious how immense the cone of black rock was, and how much of the planet's blood had been needed to create it. Phal began to search for the entrance to the cave, remembering that it was well-hidden, even for her.

Elcyon lifted a bit higher to be next to Phalynx. She looked towards the largest volcano and nodded. It was absolutely huge. She followed Phal along the thermals as they approached the volcano that seeemd to be teeming with life below. However, the way that Phal was flying, it didn't seem to be much of a threat.

Where should we be looking for the cave? Elcyon wondered, looking about carefully. I wonder how hidden it is, if it holds many secrets within...

Phal followed the rocks with her gaze, looking for a familiar patch of them. Finally, she saw ones that were near the entrance of the cave, and her magical vision revealed the specific location easily. It is very well hidden, though easy to find for me. The only problem is with how vast this volcano is, it is hard to locate the general area the cave is in. But I've found it, she stated with a smile, and pulled her wings closer to her body to sink down.

She opened her wings slightly and let herself land gently on a rocky platform outside the cave's entrance. It was a large entrance, large enough for a huge dragon to get in and out. It's old owner had needed the entrance to be that large.

Phal descended into the shadowy depths, the eerie feel of the place already chilling her. This was a bad place, a fearful one. Terrible things had happened here. This is the cave. It's even more important to stay close to me this time, or you could get lost in here, Phal warned Elcyon.

Ah, so it is hidden well, Elcyon said with a hint of a smile. She moved her wings at an angle to allow herself to drop lower with Phalynx. The warm air was making it a little difficult to manuver, because she wanted to go upwards.

Elcyon landed carefully next to Phal as she got her bearings. She wanted to remember the landscape so that if she should ever need to fly back here again, she would be able to find it a little more easily. The mouth of the cave was quite large, and Phal emerged herself within the depths of the darkness. She hesitated before quickly following inside.

She could sense Phal's uneasiness, so this cave must hold many terrible things that could even make someone like Phal become uneasy. Alright, of course I'll stay near, she said quietly.

Phalynx descended wordlessly deeper into the cavern. Even though there were no threats around, it just seemed better to be silent. The only sounds were of their footsteps and of faint explosive noises made by the lava outside. The dry heat decreased somewhat as they went deeper into the darkness. Their path was illuminated for them by Phal's scales, which she kept glowing to light the way.

Phal stopped before an exit from the tunnel, and took a deep breath. Not far beyond this tunnel lay the main chamber, and she was dreading entering that place. But she knew that they had to. Going into that place would be sad, yes, but it would not be dangerous. Phal decided that she'd rather it had been dangerous, for she wasn't looking forward to she knew lay within.

This way. You shall soon see why I am not happy about being here, Phal said. She led the way down the tunnel, until another light shown ahead. They entered a huge room in which perpetually glowing torches brought the only light. At the end of the room was a massive stone dais, upon which the previous resident of the cave had reclined. On the sides of the cave, near the walls, were dozens of skeletons. They were the skeletons of dragons, and many of them still had the dragon's scales scattered around them. Phal lowered her head and stopped, breathing heavily.

Elcyon was very aware of the growing dread within her as Phalynx led them into the main chamber. It didn't feel threatening, but the uneasy feeling that was settling at the pit of her stomach was beginning to grow. There were so many memories that painted these walls, though she could only possibly feel what the feelings were of those memories.

When they entered the main chamber, Elcyon could see the skeletons of dragons that had possibly been there many years ago. Some even had their scales.

What is this place, Phal? Elcyon whispered, looking around in awe at her surroundings. When she noticed Phal beginning to breathe hard, she instantly became concerned. How are you holding up? Are you okay?

Phal shook her head. This is the place where dragons had their souls ripped away... some as recently as less than a year ago, she murmured. The skeletons of the more recent dead were not completely skeletons, yet. The sight sickened her. I'm not sure what Hora meant us to find here, but you may look around if you wish. Don't leave this chamber, yet, Phal spoke, her voice becoming stronger. The pain of the memories of this place had been almost overpowering, but she forced it to the back of her mind. She had to be strong. They had to do whatever it was they had come here for.

Elcyon listened carefully to what Phalynx was telling her. She nodded once Phal had finished, and felt her heart twist with the sad things that have happened to the dragons in the cave. How awful! she whispered, horrified as she backed up and looked around. What kind of person would do that?!

Don't worry, I will stay within the chamber, Elcyon assured her, though she wasn't too keen on the idea of leaving Phal's side. She didn't seem to like the place that much, and it made her concerned.

Suddenly, Elcyon heard movement behind her, as though someone were standing right outside of the entrance of the chamber. It had a strange presence...an evil presence.

Phalynx, what was that? she stated calmly. Could you feel that? What kind of creatures lurk behind these walls?

Phalynx glanced behind them, having heard the movement as well. She narrowed her eyes in a frown. Hmm. Don't worry about it. I guess some rocs are still living here, but they won't bother us. They know not to bother me, she said, becoming very serious about the last part. She had shown the rocs her power, and they were not willing to fight her any time soon. If they come around here, just don't approach them by yourself. They don't know your fighting strength, yet, and would probably attack if I was not around, she warned. Phal began to sniff around the chamber, wondering once more what they had come for. What had Hora wanted them to find?

OOC: Hey, is El gonna find that one thing here? And were you planning on having that evil presence turn into anything important?

OOC: LOL, awesome. :D

IC:

Okay, I understand now, Elcyon replied to Phal, glancing around the place with one sweep of her eyes. Yes, that might be it, but it feels...different, like the presence was of something...dead. Although, the presence, has faded, like a scent. It's strange, I suppose...

Elcyon trailed off when something glimmered out of the corner of her eye. She hadn't noticed the scales before, because she was too busy observing the cave, but the color of the scales of the dragon skeleton made her heart sink with dread.

It...it can't be... Elcyon whispered, rushing over to the skeleton. It was quite large, from the looks of it, a dragon that had lived to be about 1,000 years. No...

The scales were the color of bronze, and they shimmered with the lost memories of Elcyon's past.

It's...Phal, it's Rodan, she breathed, large dragon tears streaming down her face that sparkled in the dim light. He has...he died here...no!

She began to weep for the loss of her adopted father, for he was the only father she had ever known. Now she was never able to see him again, to tell him how much she had missed him over the past couple years.

Phal nodded, suddenly understanding. Oh. Yes... you must be feeling the evil of the one who used to dwell in this cave. The master of the wraiths, she murmured. She felt that evil herself, permeating the air of the cave.

She stepped forward with concern when Elcyon examined some of the bones. When El suddenly broke down into tears and explained what was wrong, Phal drew back several steps, horrified. Oh no... oh, El, I'm so sorry... she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. She didn't want to tell Elcyon what she knew, but she couldn't withhold the truth... but would El hate her for telling her?

Elcyon... you need to know how it happened... you need to know how he died, she said quietly, her voice very sad, and very nervous. Elcyon couldn't be kept in the dark about this knowledge, but it would be devastating to hear.

Elcyon waited until the flow of tears ceased before she nodded. Whatever happened to Rodan, was probably a horrible death since he would never allow himself to die in a place like this. He was probably murdered.

Please, Phal, please if you know what has caused his death, tell me even if I don't like what I hear, she begged her friend, turning away so that Phal couldn't see the tears that were still threatining to spill over.

Phal nodded, thankful that Elcyon wanted to know. I didn't want to withhold the truth from you, and you probably won't like what I have to tell you. The dragons here, they were captured by an evil dragon. Their souls, their Eldunari, were ripped out of their bodies and transformed into terrible wraithlike beings. The bodies of the dragons, without their souls, could not survive for long. A matter of weeks at most. The wraiths looked like terrible, evil ghosts, like the ghosts of the dragons they once were, but transparent and greenish, and with their flesh rotting away. The wraiths were controlled by the evil dragon. All except the ones he created a little over 50 thousand years ago were going to be used in an army, with the purpose of turning the rest of dragonkind into wraiths and then taking over the world. When I was last here, I defeated that evil dragon, and I freed the wraiths from their eternal entrapment. They are no more, but unfortunately, because their Eldunari were used like that, none of the dragons could go into them, Phal said sadly, recounting a very base version of the events that had transpired there.

Post Re: Dark Destiny
Phalynx was right; Elcyon did not like what she had heard. Her heart clenched painfully against her rib cage and her tear ducts prickled with the threatining tears once again. She could not weep anymore, it made her sick to cry. She tried to stand up, feeling herself go rigid with tension.

Thank you for telling me what happened, Phal. I could not ask for a better friend, she whispered quietly. I would have prefered to know the truth rather than be lied to and kept in the dark.

Elcyon heaved a huge sigh. Come on, Phal. Let's go, there's nothing here to look at that's worth anything.

As she said that, something low grumbled below her feet. What was that? It sounded like something...mumbling, she murmured to Phal, taking a step closer to her friend, looking around. She made sure that she was looking one way so that she was watching out for Phal's back. It doesn't sound like a roc to me, but I could be wrong. Have you heard something like it before?

OOC: The grumbling isn't s'posed to be Rigel, is it? 'Cause I'd like to set that up...

IC: Phal was relieved that Elcyon had taken her information so well. I hope you won't be too saddened. You can take comfort in the knowledge that his soul was freed from its imprisonment, in the end, and he is not still a slave to that monstrous dragon, she spoke, trying to offer a little comfort if she could.

She trotted around in front of Elcyon, before the dragon left. I don't think we should leave just yet, El. Hora meant for us to find something here, and I know you have, but we should make sure. There could be something else, she said. She was prevented from saying something more by a low sound below. She glanced beneath their feet with her sight, watching for something moving. It's not a roc, but I don't see anything. It was probably stones falling, or something shifting. This place is quite unstable, she suggested. The fact that there was nothing down there visible to her proved that it was either another of the mirror-scaled beasts, or it was nothing. And Phal had only ever seen one of the mirror-scaled creatures.

OOC: You can go ahead and set that up then. I don't know, I just added that for epic purposes. :D

IC:

Thanks, Phal, yes I shall look at his death that way. It's a comforting thought, Elcyon murmured.

Yes, I suppose...sorry, my emotions clouded my sensible thinking. Perhaps we should look around a bit more.

Elcyon looked around. You're right, but I'm not sure...What's below this cave?

OOC: Are you going to bring Rigel into the next post then?

OOC: No, I'd prefer to take things much more slowly. I don't want this rp to last like thirteen pages and then we're done... Rigel's going to take a while to find... hee hee hee.

IC: Phal smiled. That's okay, I'm sure you have good reason to want to leave, she said sympathetically. She glanced down below them, far below them. Below this cavern, there are many others. The evil that once dwelled here had many items in his possession, things he treasured. Most of his rooms are largely unexplored, except by him. Down there, though, is where the dungeons start. The dungeons are extensive, and there are several different ones, to prevent all his prisoners from escaping at once if one dungeon did, she explained.

Perhaps we should explore the rest of his caves, and see if we find anything of interest, she suggested.
