Erais racked her memory, than finally shook her head sadly. "No, I just remember you being sad. I don't even remember what I was doing. Though remembering that much is a good thing...right?" She asked him, hoping for assurance that she wasn't a lost cause. "I wish I did remember more, but that's the best I can do. It's just that your facial expression and your words just caused that moment to come into rememberance. Almost as if I had relived the memory." Erais said, trying to think of a solution to help remember the rest of her past.

"Yes... it is a good thing," Mesaraih replied. He had to think of something else. If he had ever considered telling her he loved her, it was gone now. She seemed to friendly with him to say something like that. It felt so different, and he couldn't imagine what would happen if he did say that he loved her. He stood there, wondering what else he could say to help her remember. "Does the name Arden sound familiar to you?" Mesaraih asked slowly.

Erais smiled happily, glad that it was a good thing. She stared at him expectingly. After a few moments he mentioned a name. Erais thought long a very hard, but no real recognition came. "No, sorry. Who is he?" She asked, wondering who Arden was. Still not aware that Arden was present in her mind, observing everything through her thoughts. He felt depressed that she didn't remember anything from just his name, but hopefully she would remember him soon.

"He's a good friend," Mesaraih said simply. He didn't want to say he was a dragon because she might get alarmed. There had to be other things that she felt strongly about. He thought for a moment, then, though he didn't like the idea of it, mentioned Daidrea's name. He could have bypassed it, but he knew he had to do the most he could to bring her memory back.

Erais still recall anything about Ardan, it was very upsetting, but by now she was used to the feeling of no recollection. When Mesaraih mentioned Daidrea's name, it did pull something from her empty memory. "Wait, I think I do remember something..." Erais trailed off as she fought to remember. Daidrea... A hazy face came to her minds eye and it was very familiar. "I think I remember him...and someone named..." Erais thought harder for a moment, what was that name. "Aerdiad, or something like that. I think I can remember the feeling of being torn and hurt, though I don't know if it was from him or me." She said, trying to remember anything else about him.

Mesaraih hid a face of distaste as he was reminded of Aerdiad. His meeting with him hadn't been the most pleasant. The only good thing was that Erais was starting to reacall things. He thought of other things, but nothing important seemed to come to mind. There were many things he could say, but none of them seemed likely she would remember, especially if she didn't remember Arden. Knowing he was treading dangerous waters, he tentatively mentioned the Shade who had attacked them. "Do you know who he is?" Mesaraih asked, not bothering to hide his anger at him.

Erais was shocked when Mesaraih mentioned a Shade rather hatefully. She went through her thoughts, attempting to remember something, anything. "No, just a door...though there is something that I do remember." Erais said as a memory flooded back into her mind. For a few minutes she went through her single and solid memory, glad to know something. "Its...well it's something about...us?" She said slightly embarrassed, not sure if what she remembered was an actual memory. Did she have something with Mesaraih?

Mesaraih looked at Erais. It wasn't the most comfortable moment, at least for him, to talk about that, but he was glad she remembered anyway. But now he didn't know how much he should tell her. Arden. I need help. How much do you think she should know about this? he asked him, knowing he knew everything that was going through her mind at the moment.

Erais was still very confused at what she was remembering, if it even was a memory. It was one moment, and the feeling that was evoked from it was startling for her. Actually it's up to you. I can feel her mind starting to work at remembering. She only remembers the moment that you both confessed loving each other. She's not sure if it is an actual memory or not. I think that right now its pretty safe to just let her know all that you can think of. Arden told him, slightly embarrassed at being the go between at what she was currently remembering.

Erais just stood there, wondering what in the world was going on. She still wasn't sure about anything and was starting to feel exhausted from exerting herself so much from trying to remember.

Mesaraih frowned a little. He was rather reluctant to talk about that in Erais' state, but decided for the best. "Yes, there is something about us. This will probably sound a little odd to you, but... I love you." Mesaraih stopped abruptly, unable to continue. It felt strangely like telling her for the first time. He knew that this would end up as an awkward moment, but the goal was to bring her memory back.

Erais listened to him, her expression changing swiftly as he finished. She stared at him for a moment, wondering what was going on with him. It was very awkward for the moment, she just stood there, not sure what to say. Staying quiet for a few minutes, she was about to ask him if he was feeling away when it felt as though the floodgates had opened to her memory. In an instant she remembered every good thing that had happened between the two.

Her eyes went wide for a moment and she looked over to him. She couldn't remember everything, but what she was remembering about him was enough. She smiled softly with a quiet sigh. "Well it's certainly nice to know that it wasn't just one way feeling." She said feeling a bit happy, knowing that how she was feeling about him right now must have been love.

"Glad to hear that," Mesaraih replied quietly. "If only it was that simple," he added under his breath. He was glad that she had remembered so much, but it brought back a lot of bitter memories. He hid them away as best he could, though. With bad memories still on his mind, he didn't know what to say anymore. He was almost straining to appear happy, though. He didn't want Erais to see him in such a sour mood.

Erais gave a content smile, happy to finally remember more than just a feeling or a fuzzy face; but looking at Mesaraih covering up some sour feelings, she grew worried. "What?" She asked him confused once again, wondering if she'll ever go more than a few minutes where she won't feel confused or lost.

Mesaraih nearly groaned as Erais asked him what. "Nothing... I was just remembering some problems," Mesaraih replied, which was the truth, but only part of a larger truth. He didn't want Erais to get any wrong ideas by seeing him like that, but sometimes he couldn't hold back the bitterness.

Erais wanted to question him more, but held her tongue. It was quiet for a while, she just thought about what was going on. The sound of a war horn broke the silence. "What's going on?" She asked panicked, somehow just knowing what that meant. Unless she remembers everything from her Rider life soon, I'm afraid we won't be any good in battle. From my standing point, the Shade and his army aren't very far. Half an hour at most. Arden communicated with Mesaraih quickly before going off to help as much as he could.

"The battle's about to start," Mesaraih said angrily. He hated the Shade for what he did, and now that he was attacking the Varden, Mesaraih's rage towards him amounted. "Let's go, I have to get you somewhere safe," Mesaraih said, at the same time checking he had all his gear ready.

Erais raised an eyebrow questioningly, but followed. "Battle? Now?" She asked as they moved through the crowds that were preparing for battle. He seemed very upset and enraged at this Shade, what could this Shade have done to have caused him to be like this. Sure Shades were evil and all, but he had to have done something to cause this much anger from Mesaraih. You'll want to make sure Fenixeres gets to a safe place as well. He's an easy target right now, and be careful. Erais is starting to form plans in her mind about fighting alongside you. I don't know if she remembers any fighting skill, I don't want her getting hurt. Arden warned Mesaraih.

Mesaraih knew that if Erais didn't remember how to fight, and she came running out to try to help, she would probably get killed. He ran towardds the room where Fenerixes was in. "Just stay here," Mesaraih pleaded. "Make sure Fenerixes doesn't try to follow me," Mesaraih said. "And don't worry about me, I'll be back." With that, he ran out the door, blocking the stairs with magic so Erais wouldn't try to follow him as he went down. Hopefully she wouldn't recall how to use magic.

Erais frowned, wondering how in the world he had figured out she wanted to help. At first she tried going out a few times, but something was blocking her. Sort of mad at him for not letting her help, she walked over and sat down next to Fenixeres. Erais looked at him for a few moments, than realized something. Why in the world is he holding me back when I know I can help? She asked the small dragon, not really caring if she got a reply.

Erais got up and walked around the room, exploring it since she had nothing to do. She could hear the distant fighting and became very worried for Mesaraih. Was he hurt? Was he even alive? These questions worried her even more. Looking through the room she found a slender sword, she picked it up, slicing it through the air a few times. This felt very familiar. She didn't realize that someone had come in the room. Mesaraih's spell may have kept her in, but that didn't mean it would keep people out. Whoever it was had come up behind her and raised their sword. Fenixeres started to make a racket trying to get her to turn her attention. Right before she was stabbed, her reflexes kicked in and she swung around, killing the person. Shocked she just stared at the dead person, in awe. I have to get out of here and help, Erais told herself.

Mesaraih ran out and saw that the battle had just begun. The two armies met in a loud clash of swords, and he heard the first few arrows hitting their targets. Mesaraih ran through the side and attacked the Shade's army. He was mainly looking for the Shade, but he was nowhere in sight. He would probably have to get deeper in the battle for this. He raised his sword and started hacking through enemies as fast as he could. For some reason, his thoughts kept straying back to Erais every few seconds. He knew that she wouldn't like being stuck in that room, but he had done it only to protect her. He contacted Arden. Have you seen the Shade yet? Do you know where he is? he asked.

Erais sat right in front of the invisible barrier. Already she had killed four men who had come in trying to kill her. She didn't like waiting for the battle to come to her, she wanted to be in it, knowing that somehow she was very good at sword play. Erais just sat in front of it, trying to figure out a way around it. Sighing she gave up and continued to explore the room. Walking around she spotted some armor, she tried putting it on. It fit, but was slightly on the big side. It wasn't heavy armor, just enough for protection.

She continued searching through the room until she had come to find more gear and lashed it on. I need to cover myself, if Mesaraih recognizes me, than he'll surely put me back here. Erais thought to herself and found some cloth. She carefully wrapped it around her face and was glad to find that it gave to detail of who she was. "Perfect," She said to herself and went over to the doorway, starting to mutter random words that had come to her mind. It finally broke and she ran out to find the battle.

I've seen him a few times, but than he just disappears. Though its always been in the very middle. The darn coward is letting the people die for his protection! Arden said angrily as he dove at groups of soldiers, giving all the help he could. He hadn't paid any attention to Erais, so he didn't know she had just come into the battle, taking out soldiers in masses.

Mesaraih, hearing Arden's voice, drove deeper into the heart of the enemy army. As he went in, he noticed a slightly familiar figure in the midst of the battle. He couldn't tell who it was exactly, but he seemed to have a familiar fighting style... too familiar. His thoughts were disrupted as he felt a small scratch on his arm. He turned around and slew his attacker, continuing to try to get to the middle. Suddenly he realized why the fighting style was so familiar. It was how Erais fought. But how could she have made it to the battle? He grimaced and changed his course slightly, trying to reach her.

Erais broke out into the battle. Many of the Varden were falling, but even more of the enemy was. Erais continued to fight through the battle. She noticed a large dragon fighting through the battle, killing swiftly and was taking out many. The only problem was that people kept coming, they didn't seem to end. It was as if for every person that died, the Shade would someone two in its place. She continued to fight through the throng, not realizing that Mesaraih was making his way towards her. Not knowing he had recognized her fighting style.

Mesaraih continued making his way towards Erais, trying to protect her, not remembering that she was fighting just fine on her own. When he finally reached her, he tried taking as much of her enemies as he could, not wanting her to continue fighting. "Erais! What are you doing here?! Go back!" Mesaraih yelled at her.

Erais looked over at Mesaraih who was taking out the surrounding soldiers. She glared at him slightly. "I'm doing fine! I'm not going back and sit around doing nothing when I can obviously do a lot of help here!" She yelled at him angrily. She continued fighting, not heading his words. He had no right to tell her to go back to safety when everyone else is fighting. "I'm not going back!" Erais shouted at him.

Mesaraih sighed. Why couldn't her personalitly have returned another time? Knowing he couldn't convince her to go back, he started trying to reach the center again. Surprisingly enough, this encounter had left him pretty close to the middle. "Stay safe, then," Mesaraih told Erais as he started fighting towards the Shade. Soon he reached the radius of the middle, and he saw the Shade attacking behind a circle of defense. When one of those men died, another took his place. Mesaraih growled angrily. The Shade was going to pay now. He ran towards him and slew two soldiers in his way, attacking the Shade. The Shade snarled angrily and locked in combat with Mesaraih. He knew it wasn't going to be easy, but Mesaraih was determined to kill this Shade no matter what. "I wonder how many eternities it will take for Erais to regain her memories?" the Shade laughed coldly. Mesaraih ignored him and continued to attack. He noticed with satisfaction the Shade's frustration at not being able to cause him any fear or anger. Mesaraih simply fought as hard as he could, putting all of his anger into attacks, not words. The Shade seemed to be a little taken aback by Mesaraih's ferocity, but he did not sway.

Erais nodded and went back to fighting as Mesaraih left to go after the Shade. She still didn't understand his hard grudge against the Shade, but shrugged the thought off as she went back to fighting. Arden was in the air most of the time, but he constantly kept his eyes carefully trained on Erais, making sure that she was okay on her own. He would interfere if the battle started going against her, but so far she seemed to be holding her own. He looked around to find Mesaraih and saw him fighting the Shade. Good luck, Arden told him and transfered some of his strength to him, hopefully it would help him take the upper hand.

Mesaraih felt new strenght start to flow into him, and quickly used it to try to catch the Shade off guard. He played his sword in a circle then smashed to the side, quickly straightening it to stab the Shade in the heart. The Shade managed to step back right on time, however. Mesaraih snarled and continued to fight him. Luckily, with the new strength, he started to gain many advantages.

Reik had been fighting along the side the whole time, but now he wanted to get more to the center, and he quickly caught sight of Mesaraih locked in battle with the Shade. He snarled and started to fight his way towards them, circling around to get behind the Shade. When he finally did, he fought off three of the guards blocking the Shade from the back, then quickly smashed his sword on the Shade's shoulder, driving it as deep as he could. The Shade turned around in a snarl, and Mesaraih took advantage of the distraction to stab him straight in the heart, but the Shade leaned back and tripped Mesaraih with his feet and Reik with him arm. He quickly stood up and attacked Reik, who had to block the Shade's blows from the ground. As the Shade felt Mesaraih start to stand up, he kicked Reik and sent him back far enough to give him some time to fight with Mesaraih.

Mesaraih snarled in rage as he saw that the Shade was unwilling to give up. His attacks started to build momentum, and his blade started glowing brighter. He started to move faster than he ever had, and he struck at the Shade from high, then quickly sunk his sword to the bottom and stabbed four time succesively at the Shade's legs, then as the Shade lost ground, he stabbed him right in the center of his heart. As he did, he felt his own heart starting to burst. He groaned in pain and withdrew his sword. "What did you do," Mesaraih whispered angrily. The Shade looked at him and laughed coldly. "While you were busy trying to kill me, I devised a spell that bonded our hearts as one. Now if you try to kill me, you die as well. Look closely, and you will see the threads that hold us together. Mesaraih looked down and saw light blue threads of glowing light straight from the Shade's chest to his own. He tried to rip them apart, but he couldn't. Even his sword couldn't separate them. Mesaraih groaned softly. "So be it," he muttered softly. He slowly picked up his sword and started to slowly thrust in through his own heart, ignoring the pain. His only happiness was looking at the Shade's face as he suffered. Mesaraih felt the life leave him slowly as his sword nearly reached the vital chamber that would kill both of them.

Reik looked incredelously at what Mesaraih was doing, and realization dawned upon him. He quickly picked up his sword and focused all of his power onto it. He charged up as much as he could and soon the blade was nearly two feet thick in blue flames. Everyone around it died instantly. He ran towards the middle of them and saw the threads. He swung his sword at them and the blade stopped and made a huge noise as it met with the threads. He pushed down harder, and he felt the threads start to slowly give way. Anyone who tried to come near was killed by the energy given off by Reik's blade. He continued to push down against the threads, and little by little they seemed to weaken. When at last they seemed ready to rip apart was when they seemed to be harder. He gave one last push and the threads fell to the floor. Reik got Mesaraih's sword and pulled it out. He was still alive, but so was the Shade. As Mesaraih struggled to get up, Reik ran towards the Shade and struck at him directly in the heart, watching with satisfaction as the Shade's spirits scattered and he was gone. Then he fainted.

Mesaraih ran towards Reik and with the last of his strength protected him. Arden! You have to take him away! I can't protect him much longer! he yelled. He was very tired himself.

Erais continued with the fight. At moment it seemed to weaken, but than it would come back at full force. Her face became concentrated as she realized this fight would only be won if the Shade died. In her area the fighting was delayed for a moment. She looked around to see if she could find the Shade, or Mesaraih. Finally she spotted them in a fierce duel against each other. She gasped as she saw their lives hanging together by three strands.

In an instant she was overcome by men and had to go back to fighting, not able to spare any thoughts for Mesaraih. Erais didn't know what was going on at all, she could only fight and hope Mesaraih had the upper hand. Swinging her sword around she wiped out a considerable amount of men. Turning around quickly she saw the Shade disperse just in time. He's gone, Erais thought with a relieved sigh. Though looking over at Mesaraih and the man next to him, they did not look well. Mesaraih looked dead on his feet and the other had passed out.

You both are too weak, but you fought valiantly. Arden said to them both, though doubted Reik had registered it since he was passed out. He landed and scooped both of them up. Arden flew to a cave higher up and set them down before returning to the fading battle. The Shades army was weakening at a quick rate, they'd win soon.

Erais realized that the battle had grown weak. Only a few strong men from the Shades army remained. Luckily they were taken out quickly and the battle was over. Finally able to breathe easily, it felt as if a cloud had been lifted from her mind, and it was no longer a hard struggle to hold onto the memories she could remember. Sighing in relief, she went to go help move the wounded to better grounds.

Mesaraih felt his body weakening rapidly as Arden carried him towards a cave far in the above reaches of Farthen Dur. When he got off, he carried Reik weakly to a small bed in the cave, and he flopped down on a bed himself. All of his body hurt, and he could barely move due to that. His thoughts strayed to Erais, and, almost panicked, he asked Arden, Is she okay?

Arden looked down at the mass of dead bodies. She's fine. Not a scratch on her, she's down there helping out the wounded. Her body is telling her she needs to rest but she won't rest until she knows that everyone has been taken care of and accounted for. Arden told Mesaraih while laying down at the mouth of the entrance, observing from where he was. He knew if Erais didn't remember him at all, he'd have to stay away until she did. At this rate, he didn't know if she'd remember any more than what she had. She's worried about you, but you need to rest. Go to sleep Mesaraih, you look awful and need the sleep. Arden told him a bit strictly.

Mesaraih was about to get up when he heard Arden's voice again. He knew Arden was right, but he wanted to see Erais alive with his own eyes. Then he remembered about Fenerixes and felt worried. Fenerixes? Where are you? Mesaraih asked. Fenerixes sent him an image of the room where he had left him and a touch of resentment at being left behind. Mesaraih smiled, then almost unwillingly fell asleep.

Darkness hung over Farthen Dur as night fell. So many had died and it was quite a while before Erais and the other volenteers had accounted for everyone. She rubbed the back of her neck, trying to relieve some of the ache. Her body was slow and she was tired, the job had been long and hard, but it was nice to know that everyone was accounted for. Well almost everyone. No one actually knew where Mesaraih and another named Reik were. The name sounded familiar, but so did a lot of other things, so she let it be.

She was worried that Mesaraih was nowhere to be found, but everyone assured her that he was probably resting somewhere quiet and out of the way. It didn't matter to her, but she was to tired to look for him. Heading back to where all the injured men were being kept, she walked through one last time, just to see if he was there. Seeing that he wasn't she found an empty room and crashed on the bed, instantly asleep once she had hit the pillow.

Mesaraih didn't sleep for very long. Despite his tired and sore muscles, his mind had not stopped thinking of Erais. Painfully getting up, he went to his room and picked up Feneixes. Then he went outside and started to ask people where Erais was. None of them seemed very sure, though they had seen her a while ago. Arden, do you know where Erais went? Mesaraih asked.

Arden didn't aprove Mesaraih leaving. He needed rest and he was sure if Erais had been in her right mind, she might have lectured Mesaraih on pushing himself to hard. It was a while before Arden heard from him. Somewhere sleeping. I'm not sure, but she's exhausted. Arden told him a bit sleepily as his own eyes were growing heavy. If you find her, don't wake her. Because if you do wake her, you'll have to answer to me. You may not want to rest, even though you do need it. She needs it terribly and won't be able to sleep for a very long time if you do wake her. Arden threatened him lightly as he felt sleep wash over him.

Mesaraih was barely listening to Arden. The directions weren't the most precise, so he would have to look hard. He continued to look through the rooms, keeping his mind open for one familiar to Erais', but without waking her. He finally found her in a small room, sleeping soundly. He was just releived to see she was fine. He closed the door quietly behind him, walking away back towards his room with Fenerixes' in his pocket. He was very tired, and now he knew he would be able to rest a lot better.

The small sound of the door shutting had drawn her out of her sleep. She sat up and rubbed her eyes tiredly. Looking around there was no one in the room, but she was sure she had heard something. No one was there, which was a bit odd. However she lay back down and tried to fall asleep. After a while she did, and finally fell asleep after hours of restless wake.

Erais opened her eyes, once again, but this time a small amount of light was filtering through a small window. Yawning slightly, she got up from the bed and decided to see how the damaged looked in a clear light. The people had sorrowful faces as she walked through them slowly. Some were tending to the hurt and some of the women were wailing and wearing black veils. It may have been a victory, but it certainly didn't feel like it when you lose so many. Going out onto the battle field, she got a familiar feeling, knowing this wasn't the first time she had been in this position.

Mesaraih reached the bed and was barely able to register falling on top of it. He slept for a long time, and when he finally woke up, he felt a lot more recovered. The only thing that remained considerably sore was his arm, and it hurt a lot just to lift it. Reik was still asleep, and Mesaraih was happy to just lay there for a while, thinking of all that had happened.

Erais walked out into the midst of the dead. She made it to the middle and sat down, closing her eyes she let her mind wander. So much death, of course the remaining bodies were the ones that had been enslaved to the Shade. "Rest in peace," She muttered quietly before standing up and walking back to help tend the injured. After making her way through the busy people moving around and helping with everything.

Seeing one of the men trying to get a drink of water, but seeing that he was having difficulties since his right arm was torn up pretty bad, she quickly walked over to him. "Here, you shouldn't move that arm around to much. Let it heal." She told him and helped him drink some water before walking away to help someone else.

Mesaraih got up slowly and decided to check on the wounded to see more of the aftermath of the battle. He strode towards the hall full of wounded people. He thought with hatred of the Shade when he saw all the dead. He went around, helping a few of the people, and then he saw Erais on the other side, helping them as well. He walked towards her.

Erais had done some odd jobs for the healers as they went from one person to another. She was just finishing up bandaging someones leg in fresh cloth as she looked up and saw Mesaraih. Relief flooded her and she smiled at him, glad to know he wasn't among the dying or dead. "Thank god you're alive." She said while meeting him half way. "I was worried that you might be among the dead, or dying." Her voice had a slight edge to it, and her face had a slight frown.

Mesaraih smiled back at Erais. "I'm glad you're fine too." He had noticed the slightly edged voice she used, and frowned slightly himself. "Anything the matter?" he asked, not wanting to upset her but knowing he had to ask her what was going on. There were a lot of things that could cause him unrest, too, but he did not see why Erais could be upset, unless it was something with her not being able to remember much about her past.

Erais only shook her head. "Nothing worth worrying about." She said without much of an expression. "At least we haven't suffered to much damage..." Erais trailed off looking around the room, becoming a little bit upset. Somehow she knew that the battle hadn't had anything to do with the Varden, it was just an excuse for something bigger. She got the feeling of foreboding, something had gone on unseen in the battle. Of course the Shade dead, but the whole thing might have been a diversion.

Mesaraih was not convinced, but let it go for now. For some reason, though, he felt that the battle had missed something. There seemed to be a piece of it missing, but he could not tell why. "I know we won, but for some reason it feels so empty," Mesaraih said quietly. He didn't want really want to worry Erais, but it had sort of slipped out.

"Every battle that is won in cold blood, is no victory." Erais said quietly, thinking of everyone who had been slayed. Something seemed off, or missing. She wanted to say something about it to Mesaraih, but decided not to. Having this feeling was enough on one persons shoulder, to put it on anothers would make her feel guilty. So she kept quiet about it. "How are you faring?" She asked, putting the ominous feeling deep into her mind, saving it for thought for later.

"I'm fine, just a little tired," Mesaraih replied. He thought he felt something strange under his feet, like the ground had moved, but he dismissed it, thinking it was just probably his imagination from the strange feeling of foreboding he had. Mesaraih felt some strange sort of dark evil somewhere, but he couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from. He grimaced a little. He couldn't tell if something was wrong, but he decided to leave his speculations in his own head for now.

"I know what you mean," Erais said with a half smile. Since her memory was still almost all lost, she didn't have to ability to sort out what was going on; even with that, the feeling came back stronger than ever, and she knew something bad was going to happen. "Something bothering you?" Erais asked Mesaraih, he looked worried and a bit upset at something. There was something out there, and Erais could feel it.

Mesaraih nodded. "Something is bothering me, but it might just be nothing. I'm just getting a weird feeling that something is going to happen, but don't worry about it, it's probably just my imagination," he said. The feeling came back stronger now, and he knew that something was going to happen, but he didn't want to worry Erais with it. He felt Fenerixes squirm uncomfortably in his pocket and knew that he felt it too.

Erais now knew that she wasn't paranoid. If Mesaraih was getting the feeling, than whatever it was wasn't good. "No, something is going on Mesaraih. I think the battle was a diversion." Erais said uncomfortable. The feeling became more stronger, but looking around, it didn't seem to bother anyone else.
Mesaraih, somethings going on. The ground is moving slightly at the southern end. Almost as if there was a giant beast under it, restless to come out. Arden warned him, still not daring to talk with Erais in her mind.

Mesaraih frowned slightly. "If you want to come, just follow me," Mesaraih said, knowing he would not be able to stop her from coming. He ran towards the southern end of Farthen Dur, where Arden had mentioned the ground was shaking. He saw that here, unlike anywhere else, the ground was shaking a little more, and as he continued to look cracks started to appear on the surface.

Erais followed him silently, wondering where he was going. Finally they came south and looking at the ground, well it looked a whole lot different than it should. "What's going on?" Erais asked Mesaraih as the ground was shaking slightly and cracks were beginning to form slowly on the surface. Whatever it was, was starting to frighten her.

Mesaraih shook his head. "I don't know, but I'm not getting a good feeling about it," he said. He knew that whatever this thing was, it would probably be big and very dangerous. He growled softly. He didn't know how they were supposed to get ready for this thing. The ground started to shake more violently, and the cracks started expanding, making the ground shudder and move around. Soon it would split apart.

Erais agreed mutely. This wasn't good, what in the world could the Shade have possibly done. The only thing that Erais could think of that could be so big under there was a dragon, and if not that, than some sort of spell bound creature. Erais had to jump backwards as the ground split between her feet. "We need to tell them what's going on...now." Erais said while backing away from the crack. The ground looked like it was about to split open and let loose the terror that was beneath it.

Mesaraih nodded. He grabbed Erais' hand and ran back towards the city. He ran directly to where Nasuada was at. "The battle was a diversion," he said breathlessly. "That Shade did something. The ground is splitting apart at the southern end of this place." Nasuada turned serious immediately. "Do you know what it is?" she asked. Mesaraih shook his head. "I'll send a few soldiers for the moment while we secure the city," she said. Mesaraih nodded. "Where are you going to be?" he asked Erais.

Erais ran with Mesaraih as they ran to find Nasuada. She stood there panting as Mesaraih explained what she feared. She knew that she would be much more help if she had her memories, but nothing else seemed like it would come back. She felt as though what she knew now, was all she'd ever be able to recall.

"I'll be where ever it is that I'm needed." Erais said with a stubborn attitude. "What about you?" She asked him curiously.

"I'm going back to where we were right now. I'm going to see what's coming out of that hole and see if I can stop it," Mesaraih said. He ran back towards the hole, looking at it cautiously. The ground had a cross section of huge cracks, and there were about ten soldiers surrounding it already. Then, with a huge crash the floor split apart and huge chunks of rock flew everwhere. One soldier was badly injured, and he had to be taken away immediately. As Mesaraih continued to look, a sickly, slimy green skin started to come out. It seemed to be the back of some huge creature. The ground continued to split, and more of the back was revealed, and lining that back were slime splattered bones that seemed to be stuck with the slime. Mesaraih grimaced. This was not something that was going to be easy to get rid of. He didn't know how the Shade had been able to create something like this, but it seemed as if it had already lived through many bloody massacres. Dried blood seemed to spot it in dark red splotches. The back seemed to be roughly half a mile, and it still seemed like there was more to come out. About another yard of the back was uncovered, then with another blast of rocks, the gruesome head of the monster came out right in front of Mesaraih. He nearly gagged as he smelled its rotten breath. The head was also green, covered in huge holes all along the head that seemed to have been put there from various attempts to kill it. They were bloody. It was a rather oval head, and the eyes were a deep, flashing red. The rest of the head had bones sticking out all over it, particularly around the mouth. It was a gruesome sight. Then with another crack, the skeletal tail lashed out from behind it. It was nothing but thick yet spiny bones. With another push and more cracks along the edges, the full body of the beast loosened itself from the ground. Overall, it looked like a gigantic, sick attempt at an imitation of a dragon. It opened its jaws and let loose a jet of green acid that hit the ground and melted the rocks, leaving a putrid smelling smoke. About two drops of it touched one of the guards, and as soon as it did, he fell to the floor, writhing in pain, then his body went rigid and turned a sickly greenish color. Everyone could tell he was dead.

The women and children cried out in terror as you could see the hideous beast from where Erais was assisting with the injured and helping to suit up the men who could fight. Everyone stared at it in fear, even from being so far away, the faint putred smell of it reached their noses. Erais made a slight face along with everyone else. "Come on, keep working. We'll need more than just a few men out there." Erais said and continued to work fast.

They kept sending the abled men out, but it seemed as if the beast was unbeatable. Erais became frantic, it seemed dangerous, but she knew she needed to be out there. Not stuck with the injured and children. You may not remember me Erais, but we need to fight together on this. A voice broke into her mind while she was putting thick armor on. Than lets go. Erais said and ran out from the shelter.

Arden landed down in front of her, wearing his own armor. Lets go, Erais said and scrambled up his slick scales. He took off towards the beast and picked up a large boulder. Hurling it towards the repulsive creature. As soon as it his the slime it melted into a pool of acidic rock. I fear this will be harder than anything we've ever face. Arden told her. She couldn't remember him, but felt a strong kinship towards him.

Mesaraih stared at the beast defiantly. It looked back at him, seemingly laughing at his determination. It casually spit acid at him, and Mesaraih was barely able to dodge it in time. The dragon continued spitting at him, and Mesaraih had to continously roll to get outside its range. The beast spit one more time, then turned and started heading towards the city. One of the drops fell on Mesaraih and he immediately fell the poison seep into his body. Acting quickly, he cut the part of his flesh that had been hit away. It was a rather big chunk of skin that he had had to cut off, but he knew that if he hadn't he would have died. He watched, disgusted as his piece of skin on the floor became the same sickly greenish color and dried up. Then he turned in horror as he saw the beast starting to spit its first shots of acid at the city. One builing came crashing down in a pool of bubbling acid. Mesaraih ran towards it as quickly as he could. They had to keep the creature away from the city, or soon there would be no city.

Erais could hear the shrieks of people as the beast was making its way towards the city. The rock that had been touched by the acid melted away like snow against a fire. "No!" Erais screamed and had Arden shoot after him. Arden got as close as he dared and blew fire and the, the thing. How can we fight something we cannot touch? Erais asked Arden and Mesaraih. The fire mixed nastily with the acid and made it boil up. Arden was able to predict what would happen in time and quickly moved away. Some of the slime burst and his random soldiers, killing them almost instantly, but their cries of pain echoed in Erais' mind.

What can we do? Erais wondered in despair.

Mesaraih groaned as he saw slime burst and kill many soldiers instantaneously. I don't know, he said, despaired himself. The beast spit at him again, and this time Mesaraih used magic to redirect the blast straight at its eyes. The monster shrieked in pain as it was blinded. Mesaraih didn't know if it would be blinded permanently, but it was good enough for now. It would buy them time to find a weakness. They had to find something that could penetrate the slime covering the monster without melting. Mesaraih heard a rumbling from above as the monster's weight seemed to have cause the ceiling to let loose a number of stalactites. He didn't know what they were made of, but they went through the slime without melting, and the beast was pierced by the sharp tips. They had found a way to hit him, but they would need a lot more than that to take it down.

Arden had to dodge a few of the stalactites that came crashing down. Erais watched as it slid through the slime and hit the exposed skin beneath it. That's it! Erais thought happily. Their are certain minerals that form in stalactites that the dwarves use in certain armor and weapons. Of course its harder for them to get it, so those metal and weapons are rare. I think if we can fashion a weapon out of it quickly, we might win! Erais told Mesaraih and Arden excitedly. Though how to do it quickly? She questioned.

Mesaraih grinned. With magic, he said. Summoning the innate power, he dropped down as many stalactites as he could, then started changing their form. He fashioned it into a giant spear, then told the people below to ram it against the beast together. He quickly fashioned many more in that manner and lowered them to the warriors below. It took a surprising amount of energy from him, and he had to take a break after a while. He watched in statisfaction as the blinded beast was continously stabbed.

Erais had no idea what she was doing, but on instinct she was muttering strange incantation and breaking the stalactites off the ceiling. She didn't know how to form them into spears, but she did know one thing. Quickly she manuevered them towards various parts of the body. Hitting him in the throat, eyes, neck, and body. She continued to pierce the skin beneath the strange slime until they would break. She'd get more and keep at it until she felt tired from the magic leeching her life.

Mesaraih had gotten tired from the use of magic, but after a while he was able to get going again. The men below grabbed the huge spears in groups and stabbed the beast. For a while it worked, but then the beast started to blindly spit at the men, and many died. Mesaraih got an idea on how to protect the men. He got as many stalactites as he could, then made a huge, rounded wall around the beast, encasing it in a barrier of unmelting rock. He left small holes in it for the spearmen to continue stabbing the beast.

Erais had grown tired and the stalactites dropped into the beast from where she had been stabbing it. It screamed in pain as the stalactites weren't removed. Even in her drained state, she was able to see that the stalactites were melting like the other rock, but slower. Looking closer she realized that they had a strange effect. "Mesaraih! Get them to lodge the spears in it! The stalactities burn like acid against his own skin!" She shouted to the ground. As she watched the remains of her stalactites melt into the beast, she could see gaping holes form.

She got an idea. Try aiming your flame into the holes! Erais told Arden urgently, hoping her idea would work. Arden dove towards the thing and let out a jet stream of fire. It went right into the hole where the stalactites had disappeared. The beast shrieked out it pain as it had a wonderfully horrible effect against it. A way to defeat it! Erais thought joyously and had Arden dive and random holes, burning the skin and causing the thing to start losing, and hopefully die.

Mesaraih grinned as he saw what Arden and Erais were doing. He took place with the spearmen himself and relayed the message to get them stuck into the beast's skin. Together, they all started ramming onto the beast as strongly as they could until the spears were firmly lodged in. He saw the monster weakening as it was burned by the acid.

Erais felt satisfied as Arden pulled back, watching the thing start to turn a strange gray and sickly color, slowly shriveling up. She felt her eyelids start to droop as Arden landed on the ground gracefully. "How'd we do?" She asked Mesaraih half awake, struggling hard on staying conscious. Apparently she couldn't remember the effects of magic and it had drained a lot of her energy.

Mesaraih smiled at Erais. "We did great," he said quietly, rather amused at her sleepiness. He looked at the beast. It wasn't dead, but it didn't look like it had much time either. Its skin was practically lifeless. He watched as its eyes dimmed to a lifeless grey, and with a crash it fell to the floor. "It's going to take a long time to clean this mess up," Mesaraih said. Then he heard a cold voice say, You never would give up. Mesaraih froze. It couldn't be... it was the Shade's voice. There was a big blast of energy and everyone except Mesaraih was blown backwards, then a wall of the deadly muck from the monster swirled around him, about a half mile around him and the beast. Mesaraih stared in shock as the body of the beast seemed to dry up and melt into the ground, revealing the body of the Shade behind. "Nobody can come and rescue you this time, and you look pretty tired. I don't know how you'll survive," the Shade laughed. Mesaraih growled. "I will survive, and this time, you will die once and for all. Just answer me one question. How did you survive dying so many times?" The Shade smiled. "Seeing as you're about to die, I don't see why I can't tell you. Technically, I'm not the same Shade. I just have one body and mind, but Galbatorix killed four Shades and added them to mine. I had five hearts. Now I only have one, but unlike you, I'm fresh and ready to fight, while you're tired. You won't last very long." Mesaraih grimaced. The Shade was right. Nobody could go in there to help him, and he was too tired to be in any condition to fight. Then an idea sprang to his mind. If stalactites didn't melt very fast in the acid, he might be able to create a ring of stalactites by magic that would create an opening from which he could escape. The only problem was doing it without the Shade noticing. He realized that somebody outside would have to do it, but Erais didn't remember enough of the ancient language to make a spell like that. But he knew, and that was enough. He contacted her. Erais, you have to make a ring of stalactites that I can escape from. Put it right on the acid so a circle is formed where I can get out. He told her the words to do the spell and how to hold it in the wall of acid. Hoping that it would work, he wearily drew his sword. He had to survive for a long time if he was to escape from the acid prison and have any hope of defeating the Shade.

Erais was nodding off, her head bobbing up and down as she tried to stay awake. She didn't take notice of what was going on. Arden did, and quickly got to safety as the Shade was back. Not him again, He growled in annoyance. Erais listened to Mesaraih's words, she sort of understood what he said. Arden transfered as much energy as he dared to her, becoming exhausted himself. Erais was instantly awake and began to make fast on what she had to do. Quickly she muttered the spell quietly and formed the ring.

Erais shot it into the acid, giving it enough energy to stay there as long as it was needed. Instantly she transfered all her energy over to Mesaraih, not sure how she did it. Hopefully it would be enough to help him. It had been too much, she fell to the grown, having passed out cold.

Mesaraih and the Shade circled each other, then the Shade pounced with lightning speed. Mesaraih was barely able to parry his blow in time, and, trying to keep up with the Shade, he delivered his own couple of blows, but they were weaker and slower than usual, and the Shade deflected them easily. Mesaraih growled, but then he felt energy transferred into him and he saw the ring behind the Shade. Using all the energy at once, Mesaraih slashed at the Shade as strongly as he could, actually making him stumble. Then, he ran towards the ring and jumped out of it. He quickly took it out. He was safe from the acid, but the Shade was still alive, and he could come out at any moment. "Everyone point arrows at the Shade when he comes out!" Mesaraih yelled. He stepped back. Even the Shade could not fight an army, no matter how tired they were.

Erais was out cold as Mesaraih jumped through the ring. Arden was still hanging into consciousness and was able to register what was going on. Slowly he moved over to Erais, knowing he couldn't move her or fly, so he lay down and shielded her from where the Shade would be coming out. This was the only way he knew how to keep her alive. Hopefully it would work. He drifted to unconsciousness as the men cried out in fear, seeing the Shade. He shifted his body one last time to completely cover Erais, finally passing out.

As the Shade came out, all the men shot arrows, but the Shade stopped them with magic. The only good thing was that it cost him energy. "Hiding behind an army? Are you too much of a coward to meet me face to face?" the Shade asked, sneering. He continued on like this until Mesaraih could not take it. He strode right where the Shade was at. He was walking to his death, but he would take the Shade down with him. He growled. "Are you too much of a coward to face me when I'm fully recovered?" he asked the Shade, drawing his sword for what he knew would be the last time. Trying to take the iniciative, he jumped at the Shade, but the Shade sidestepped him and counterattaacked. Mesaraih was barely able to dodge it in time. They both started to do complex maneuvers, but Mesaraih was barely able to keep up with the tide of the duel. His strength was leaving him. He started to slow, and the Shade was starting to get faster, noticing the drop in speed. Soon his strenght started to drop, too, and he knew that the moment was near. It felt strange, knowing he would die but not backing away from it just to keep his honor. He cursed himself, but he did not falter. The Shade, with one final blow, struck him cleanly in the chest. It was just to the left of his heart, but if he survived, it would be a miracle. As the Shade took out his sword, Mesaraih stabbed him in the chest, and for a moment the Shade knew what had happened, and he looked in surprise at the blade protruding from his heart, then the evil spirits scattered for the final time, and Mesaraih thought he heard his gasping breath for the final time. But somehow, as he fell unconscious, he knew that he had somehow managed to cling to life for another moment. How long it would last, he didn't know, but it was a valiant effort, if futile.

Something burst inside Erais and she woke up screaming. Something terrible had happened, and whatever it was would effect her. It took Erais a moment to climb out from under Ardens body. She looked around, the Shade was gone, the army moving dead and wounded men back to the city. Mesaraih...Mesaraih! She thought panicked and quickly looked around, she saw him on the ground, a sword stuck in his chest, barely missing his heart.

"No," She whispered to herself, she kept saying it, over and over until she was screaming it with tears streaming down her face. "Mesaraih!" She sobbed/screamed as she ran over to him. He was barely alive, just barely. "No, come on, you have to stay alive. Please, please, please..." She trailed off, seeing if she could remove the sword without damaging him more. "Please, stay with me Mesaraih!" She almost yelled at him, she slowly, and very carefully began to remove the sword from his chest. Hoping against hope that it wouldn't hurt him more. Mesaraih! Please! You're the only one I remember! Just stay with me! Erais screamed into his head, hoping he heard her and would hold on. At least until he could be helped more. So many emotions flooded through her, her whole body freaking out as she was pulling the sword out. Luckily her hands kept steady.

Mesaraih was nearing the void, but every time it came closer, he managed to stay away from it. Stubborn idiot, just let yourself die already, he thought to himself. Through his struggle with life, he dimly heard Erais' voice. It was for her that he needed to live, but he didn't see how he was going to last like this. For now, all he could do was desperately cling to life. I'm... trying, Mesaraih managed to say as he continued clinging on the edge of life.

Erais looked around, to see if there was anyone who could possibly help. To her horror, they were all alone. Everyone else was back in the city, tending to the injured and delivering the news of who was dead and still alive. She became frantic. She couldn't remember any useful spell that would help him stay alive, all she could think about is how she didn't want him to die.

Arden! I need your help! Erais' tone instantly had Arden on his feet and walking over. He's dying...please...do something... She pleaded as tears continued to fall down her face. I don't know, but this might help, Arden said, feeling her pain, and not wanting her to suffer anymore. He slowly bent his head down to where the wound was, he blew out a steady breath, not really sure what he was doing exactly. Erais watched in facsination as the wound sealed up. That's all I can do. Now its up to him to want to come back, but I won't blame him for dying. Who wants to live here when you can ascend to the heavens. Arden told her before walking a little bit away to give them privacy.

Erais felt like she had been torn into a thousand pieces, she lay her head against his chest and sobbed. "Please...please Mesaraih..." She whispered between sobs, wishing against hope that he'd come back to her.

As Mesaraih felt his wound seal up, he saw two strange paths. One was full of light and happiness, and the other was full of struggles and pain, but also many happy things. He could tell one was death and the other was life. He chose life, and his body immediately began to hurt as he struggled to stay alive. He was getting better, but he knew that to live there was still a long way to waking up out of danger. He managed to become conscious, but there was still a danger of death.

Erais was too consumed in sorrow to noticed that Mesaraih seemed to fight against Death and start to hold onto life. She could only think about how lost she'd be if he died. He was the only one that she knew in the empty world where she couldn't remember almost anything. Her head was laid gently on his chest as the tears spilled freely down her face. Don't go, don't leave me...please stay... She thought to him in a morbid state.

"Erais," he coughed out weakly. "If I die... don't worry about me... I will never let go of you... just stay happy." His eyes closed for a moment, then he looked up at her and smiled. "I won't give up easily, so if I do die then I'll be sticking around for quite another while," he said. He knew that he could not give her anymore comfort. No matter how hard he tried, he could not advance. He was glad of the progress he had made in life, even if now it didn't even matter. He had pushed himself and known for the most part when to control himself, but no matter how hard he tried he thought that this time none of it had mattered. Then he felt like slapping himself. He had just told her he wouldn't give up, and he was not going to die. He just had to fight a little more...

Mesaraih knew that Fenerixes would die too, but he had thought there was nothing he could do. Now he thought differently. He slowly started to gain strength from a strange source. He started to realize that it came from Fenerixes. He was still at the dragonhold but he knew what was happening. Mesaraih painfully grinned. Death was not going to take another victim... not yet. He started to gain more and more strength, and death started to seem like an unlikely outcome. He was recovering. "I'll live," Mesaraih said, then fell asleep to regenerate strength.

Erais moved to sit up, seeing that Mesaraih was starting to look a little bit different. Like he was really fighting this time, and he seemed to be gaining more strength by the minute. "Good," Erais said quietly as he drifted to sleep. She didn't want to move him, afraid he might wake up, he needed his sleep. So she sat there with him, deciding to just wait. Arden had falled asleep and the sky was considerably darker now. She felt sleep wanting to take her, so she unconsciously rested her head against Mesaraihs and falling into sleep.

Mesaraih's sleep was very restful. He slept for a long time, and by the time he woke up, he was still sore and pained, but all traces of death danger were gone. He would still need a lot of rest to recuperate himself, but for now he was content to know he would live. His head felt comfortable against Erais' and he lay there resting more time, glad beyond what he thought the day would bring. So much had happened in less than five days.

Erais was in a much more comfortable sleep than she had been since loosing her memory. It could have been the fact that Mesaraih was next to her and she took comfort in that, feeling safe. Or just the fact that she had been emotionally drained and had become physically exhausted. It was a little while after Mesaraih woke that she did. She didn't change her position at all and kept a steady pace in breathing, so she just stayed there, quiet, just enjoying the moment.

He felt sick if he thought about any of the bad things that had happened, so he just thought about all the good things that could happen in the world. He knew that soon enough he would have to get up and face the difficulties of life, but for the moment he didn't feel up to it.

She asked him, hoping that no lasting damage had been done, at least not physically.

His worst pain was in the place he had been stabbed, but he didn't think it would last. The only thing that probably would remain was the scar, but to him, that didn't matter.

It was too exhausting...I just wish I could remember more, but I guess if I'm supposed to remember, I'll remember when I need to." Erais was relieved that that whole ordeal would be over. It had been very stressful, so it was nice to just not have to move.

"I usually like adventures, but now I welcome rest. I'm glad it's over, but I'm also glad it happened," he said. Even though he was still injured, he had a spark for adventure. It was good to see that he still held a lot of himself. "That Shade was a headache, though. He lived too many times."

"I agree, one life is enough." She chuckled quietly, it had come back too many times. She'd rather it stayed dead the first time. "Rest will be a welcomed greatly." She sat up and stretched her arms, she looked over at Arden who was still fast asleep. In a way he reminded her of a very big dog in a deep sleep. His tail would occasionally twitch and soft rumbles came from his chest. Erais looked around at the ravaged battle field, it would definately take time, but it wasn't irrepairable.

Mesaraih sat up as well. He wanted to stretch his sore limbs, and once he was awake he wasn't one to lie around much. The battlefield was completely torn apart, melted, and filled with slime and blood. It would take a long time, but it would be repaired. He tiredly stood up, testing the strength of his legs. It was easier than he thought, but his chest hurt, so he sat back down, where it didn't hurt as much.

Erais yawned slightly as Mesaraih sat back down. "Hurt much?" She asked concerned, hoping that he wasn't too sore. This place smells like brimstone, Arden mumbled as he was beginning to wake up. He was shocked a little bit when he looked around the torn battlefield. Than a thought occured to him. Where's the baby? He asked, referring to Fenixeres.

He's up in the dragonhold, Mesaraih replied. "Kind of, but nothing unbearable. It should pass away in a few days," Mesaraih said. He didn't want to worry her, but to himself it felt like a different kind of pain. He didn't know if he would ever be free of a discomfort there, and it would definitely take more than a few days for it to recede.

Ah, Arden said before lifting off to go be with the little dragon. Erais looked at Mesaraih and didn't believe him, but she let it be put to rest. "Well than at least this might help distract you." She said and gave him a soft kiss on the cheek. Hopefully it would be enough to ease his pain for a moment.

Mesaraih felt better as he felt the warm sensation of being kissed by Erais. He just sat contentedly and said nothing. He savored these moments, and now he didn't even think about the bad things that could happen in the future. After moments like these, it wasn't good for him to sour things up by thinking negatively. "Thanks," he said softly.

Erais smiled softly towards him. "Anything I can do to ease your pain," She said, just glad it distracted him for the moment. Hopefully he'd heal quickly, she didn't like seeing him in discomfort or pain. No, the rat... Arden whined in her head. Erais started to giggle slightly from the images she was getting, what in the world could he be doing?

Mesaraih looked at her curiously as she giggled. "What happened?" he asked her. He looked back at Arden. He seemed rather annoyed. He laughed a little. He didn't know why, but he looked kind of funny.

"I honestly don't know, but apparently a tiny, itty bitty mouse, a thousand times smaller than him, ended up ruining his morning. That's all I can pull from the strange images and bizzare thoughts he's having right now." She said still laughing at how strange Arden was acting.

Mesaraih laughed. The world seemed at peace right now, and he didn't want to think about anything that could ruin this moment. He wished it could always just stay like this, but he knew eventually he would have to get up. He sighed quietly. It would be pretty boring when he did, as he still had to recuperate from his injury.

Erais sighed, knowing that nothing lasted forever. "I suppose we should get you to the shelter of the city...maybe even be loooked at?" It was phrased more as a question, she hadn't meant it to be one, but it came out that way. "They are probably wondering where their hero is." She teased him playfully and carefully stood up, making sure her own body wasn't sore.

"Yeah, I guess so. I feel proud, but not really like a hero. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you," he said. He slowly stood up, happy to find out that his chest didn't hurt as much. Together, they slowly walked towards the city. He wondered how the people would react to his appearance.
