Fall
This place is a mess right now and you should know it.
Most every member who's been here to see "better days" thinks its a mess. And it's true, it is a mess. As a member with a bit of rep. I shall just state the simple fact it needs cleaning.
There is a heap of spam and sentences posted that are not relevant to anything at all. Grammar is discarded. Maturity seems discarded. Half the posts in CHWYB make barely any sense -- either some people are trying too desperately hard to be "random" and "cool" and "weird" or are just attention-seeking.
Two places seem to just be holding on / functioning. That's the RPG area and the Mature Discussion.
Understandable that there's alot of 12-13 year-olds here on this site who want to be as funny as possible, but it leaves room for barely anything else. If you catch.
There needs to be more action from the staff. Every forum falls but why must this forum fall now?

Re: Fall
I agree, there are too much spam and random conversation. But there isn't much anyone can do. I probably would have quit by now, but Pomfret and I are doing PM RPGs so I decided to keep at the RPG area and really that's why I'm here. I only posted on chat today because I was really bored. That conversation quickly immature though because a few people -mostly newer- just put random stuff or things that didn't even apply to the conversation. I think a major problem is people don't want to hold a full conversation and would rather just put what they want to talk about or simply spam and say stuff that's irrelevant.
I don't think SF can be stopped from falling unless the older members come back or the more mature topics and conversations come back. No one can really change it though. I don't think spelling and grammar is that big of a problem, unless you can't read it because it's so bad.

Alright, let's not go crazy on the new people, ok? We need new people to survive, and if you'll remember, we were all like that once upon a time. I'm still like that, to be honest. but yes... changes need to happen. still working on that... stick with us a little longer. those of you who know me more well know my word is good

Re: Fall
What we all really need, is for CP to get his butt in gear, crank out that last book, so that we have a reason to bring the old peeps back. Hell, I still drop in around here often enough, but I haven't had a good conversation here in ages. My latest posts have actually been trolling attempts, believe it or not, (it's so easy to troll little kids that think they're being cool and stuff, you wouldn't believe it)
What would help though in the mean time, is some action taken by our Admins, Louis and Annie, I'm not entirely sure what they could do, though I'm sure Kotor has a few ideas. I mean, if we can get a few mature straight thinking minds to work together, and then throw in a few immature, scattered minds in for a good mix, we could maybe save SF. I've personally had a few good memories here, and hate to see it in it's decaying form.
Save the Murlocs. Save Saphira Forums.
EDIT: one thing I don't miss about this place... the mature language filter...

Re: Fall
I agree a bit with Kotor on this one. We were all like that once upon a time. Hell I joined when I was 14 and weird. Don't believe me? Check my old posts. I was so annoying I dont know how I didnt get booted! We all need to combine together if we was SF back to its old glory. Its not just the admins and mods, maybe you guys can join and be the mature voice in the crowd of kids. Sometimes it takes one good influence you know? I'm trying really hard to make it back here at least a few times a week but between school, work, homework, gym, social life and other random commitments its difficult to stay on top of things in real life let alone online world.

I realise I was retarded in my noob days but I'm going to say, whether or not someone is fairly new or elite as a member, we should all be treated equally.
Noob spam shouldn't be tolerated. Obviously noob spam has been going for ages and has it gotten us anywhere? No.

There isn't much we can do about the noob spam. Even if they get banned and come back, they still spam. I think to try and stop it noob spam posts or topics should just be deleten.
Back in my noob days I wasn't too bad, a littly nooby but most of it was my spelling which is even worse than it is now lol.

Re: Fall
Yes but there is a difference between spam and just "noob" chatter. Many people mistake posts as spam because they dont find it relevant or they find it annoying. CHWYB for example has *always* been random. Thats why (if i remember correctly) the post count there doesnt count. Same with "Forum Games". There are certain places where people being random and posting whatever can be appropriate. Just because you find it irritating or immature doesn't make it spam although those lines can become blurry

Re: Fall
There is actually such thing though, not relating to whether or not I'm annoyed with it.
The issue is the descent of SF, so what can we do to help stop this? Clean up, however context you want to put that in.

Re: Fall
When it boils down to it, the problem is with people that join in with serious conversation when they don't know what they're talking about. If I wasn't as conscious to the rules, I would have called a good few people out myself by now, especially in the debate section.
High level debate -> Ignorant, naiive or downright stupid person comes in and misunderstands what's going on yet tries to join in anyway -> debate is brought down to a lower level -> debate is ruined
That's what I tend to see happening.

Re: Fall
So, Was just looking at all my posts. Wow, I was a noob. I wasn't even the proper age when I first joined SF. I still am only 13, so probably would be categorized with the spammers. But I have matured a lot in the past year since quitting SF. I have been returning lately, sneaking in here and there. This place was a very happy place for me (Even at such a young age, and still at such a young age.) I agree, we need to get this site going once more. Let's get our admins, and let's return this place to its natural order.

It is not possible to stop the post count for only one topic, it as to be the entire section. As for me coming back more it might be complicated. I do not have internet at my home and do intend on getting any, this as been the case for the pass 14 months. So when I have to get on the internet I have to come down to University. That's another reason, I just don't really have the time. Between my lectures, tutorials, labs, assignments, cooking, cleaning, sleeping, SF/saphira jack-o-lantern etc. I don't really have the ability to put the amount of time that I might have one day been able to put on SF. Almost all of the work that I have done in the past couple of months have been maintenance related to the server and updates. I'll try to put in more time, but it won't be like it once was.

Re: Fall
Just thought I'd add more to this. I think another reason why SF isn't doing as well is because the newer members don't post much on new topics made by older members. (Excluding rps, but it does kind of apply there also...) Anyway, I think that is a problem. It can be seen in the Creative section. A lot of the posts there are made by older members which aren't being posted by others much, but the ones by newer members generally are. Not only there, but also seen throughout the all fourm. The new members often don't post on new topics made by older members. Has any other older member noticed this? Or is it just me?

Re: Fall
I may not be an older member, but...
DD is right. I will admit, being from the newer generation, that I am reluctant to post in anything dominated by older members. As with the others, it's a bit intimidating. CHWYAB is the sole exception to that, seeing as it is so informal.
Another point here being that most of the newer generation is under the age of 17, it seems. Many of the older members are above that age, which also makes us back off. You don't pick fights with older people that can whoop your ass, especially if the entire forum is going to back them up. Including the admins.
Which leads to the point that some newer members try to bring back older topics, but since they do it with the wrong topics and the wrong approach they get warned and don't try it again. It's fairly common, from my point of view. Maybe it'd help is a notice went up for those people of how to properly restore a thread, which would help with some of these instances.
A final point is that the problem in the creative section is more the fact that the newer users don't tend to look at it. It may be a global announcement, but let's be honest with ourselves: how often do we read the GAs more than once, possibly excluding the rules just as a refresher for mods and such? I know I don't. I have read the rules exactly twice since I joined. Once briefly last August, to learn about foruming, and once in late spring or early summer when it became an announcement. Just like this, most of the newer users have seen the announcement, not seen it where they thought it would be, and then just continued on their way. I found the section before I saw the announcement, so I read the announcement just to make sure it was what I thought it was. The older users tend to dominate graphics, as the newer users tend to dominate FG. We tend to dominate writing, while you tend to dominate other stuff. Many of the recent fanfiction posts have been made by those who have joined after January 1, 2009. Not all of them, but many.
SF activity reached a peak, but is starting to slide down again. If we're going to get this place like old days, days I do not remember, we should get started finding the fans we need to survive. Depict SF the way we see it: a casual place to talk, a place to journey far into the wild land of RolePlay, a place to just debate when we have a point to talk about. This is how to bring us back, guys. This is how you do it.

Re: Fall
The problem with your argument is that you a distinguishing "newer" and "older" members far too much. There are not two sides in this. Newer and older are not dominating anything, just certain people finding certain things easier to chat about.
The forum needs a clean up and a new approach. That's pretty much all.
