Post Which Author Is Your Favorite?
This is sort of like another topic, but with more authors to choose from.

My favorite would have to be Rowling, because I just fell in love with the Harry Potter series.

The way I rate them would probably be like this:

1. Rowling
2. Paolini
3. C. S. Lewis
4. Tolkein
5. Pullman
6. Funke

Rowling I like because of all the plot twists and storyline that she makes.
Paolini I like because of the storyline and the mystery.
C. S. Lewis I like because of his way to leave a lot of the world up to your imagination.
Tolkein I like because of his detailedness and his poetic writing.
Pullman I like because of his interesting storyline.
Funke I like because of her way to blend fantasy into our own world.

it's definitely Rowling! i haven't even heard of half those authors anyway! Paolini is good, but he's only written 2 books so far! i've read C.S Lewis's books, but i really didn't like the idea of the wardrobe thing or the Aslan dude.

I think he wrote the Golden Compass.
My vote is for Tolkien, because he has been tested by time and his stories are more grand than Lewis.

Tolkein is the author of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Rowling is the author of the Harry Potter series. Paolini is the author of Inheiritance Cycle. (If you didn't know that, get off this site! Just kidding! ) C. S. Lewis is the author of The Chronicles of Narnia series. Philip Pullman is the author of the His Dark Materials trilogy (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass). And Cornelia Funke is the author of the Inkheart trilogy, The Theif Lord, and Dragon Rider.

So, that is who all of these people are.

i didn't like Cornelia Funke's books at all! Dragon Rider was jus REALLY corny, Thief Lord was jus too long and uninteresting, and i simply didn't like Inkheart. i guess i jus don't like her style of writing.

I agree! Cornelia Funke's books were very boring. I read Dragon Rider, and it took me a long time to finish it, but when I got to the end, it got really good. Inkheart and Inkspell were very, very boring. In fact, I didn't even finish Inkspell. The problem with her books is that they're not exciting enough, and they're too slow-paced. Not my type of book.

I really enjoyed Funke's books. But I'd have to say Tolkien

He is the orginal fantasy Author.
I <3 Tolkien so much.

Paolini is a copy cat
Rowling is.... idk i cant judge cuz I havent read her books a lot but she's DEF No tolkien!!!
Lewis writes more for children while tolkien is for anyone.
Pullman is a good author but not the best out there
Funke is awesome but again, more for children

No Paterson?

Well with the choices you gave us i would make it:

1. Paolino - makes great haracters and a great story line.
2. Tolkien - created a whole world that would be remembered for years
3. Fiunke- Very creative and original
4. Rowling - if the other 2 authors were people i knew about she would be 6th. very un original at times, using things that have been in childrens stories for a long time.
havent heard of the other 2.

Okay BY FAR Tolkien Is the best author out of them all. None can compare to him and his writing ability. His stories have been remember over all these years and will always be remembered. If y'all haven’t read any of his books you should be ashamed he laid the foundation for modern fantasy!
Okay Im done now.

Sure Tolkien can spend 5 pages describing a tree but he makes that 5 pages intersting. I hate to say it but these other writers just can't compair to his writing ability.

I agree! Tolkein was good, and that clearly shows since his books have withstood the test of time. He did get a little too detailed at times, but I suppose that was the writing style back then. The Fellowship of the Ring was my least favorite of the trilogy. It was too long with not enough action, though parts of it were really interesting! The Two Towers was my favorite of the three. I don't really know why I liked it so much. The Return of the King was okay, but, like the The Fellowship of the Ring, parts could get carried out over ten or so pages, when really they could have been shortened down to two or three.

By the way, I'm not saying that I hated Tolkein's books. I'm just saying that I prefer other forms of writing.

Tom Bombadil! I absolutely hated his character. It was the most pointless two or three chapters in the entire The Lord of the Rings trilogy! A lot of fans were disappointed that they cut his character out of the movies, but I say, "Good riddance!"

LOL!!!! I would have too! Oh, it would have been the worst 10 or 15 minutes of my life! Even in the Extended cut of the movies they left him out! Thank goodness!

By the way, the Extended Editions of the movies is the only ones I have. I've never seen the theatrical releases for the movies except for The Fellowship of the Ring.

Yes, the Extended Editions are longer, but they are better, and by that I mean that they go more in depth with the story and characters and such.

What do you mean by charry? Do you mean character?

My favorite character would have to Sauron. Don't go off giving me a hard time because it's the villain! I just have this thing for villains! Sometimes, authors mistakenly or purposly make the villains more interesting than the heros, like Harry Potter and Voldemort! Voldemort is my favorite character out of any book.

I do too. Gollum is another one of those characters that Tolkein was able to build a lot of the story around. It is a sad story though, but it made the book that much more interesting. To be a good book, you have to have good characters that seem to come to life before the reader. Tolkein was able to make good characters by giving them all good backstories and stuff.

Tolkien is the father of all fantasy. Need I say more? 8)

But after Tolkien its an epic showdown between Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, and David Edding's the Belgariad series. Both are exceptional masterpieces even if they are derived from Tolkien's work and "bound" by him.

Thirdly, I would have to say the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. Very, very, worthy of a high ranking in my book.

Fourthly, would be Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy, and lastly would be the Silmarillion.

Rowling, while her books used to be #1 on my list, has gone down considerabl to sixth or seventh place, because the other series are crafted and weaved so much better with intricate plots that are entwined together and eventually come back to the main story arc.

Paolini also used to hold the #1 spot. But since its unoriginal, plagerized in many places, ect, ect, it is merely a story for me to have fun being a critic over. Thatis why I enjoy reading Inheritance - to point out and discover the flaws and inconsistantcies.

Are you a Christian or attend church? Don't worry, I am too, and I strongly believe in my faith. I can see where you're coming from. For a long time, my parents wouldn't let me read Harry Potter because it had such dark magic and such in it. But finally, I persuaded them to let me read the first one, and I got hooked. I have read them all. I read the 7th one in six days. I know this girl at my school who read it in 14 hours, though. But I can still see where you're coming from.

I don't think this is the right place for religious discussion...
I understand your views on HP though I do not share them.

I agree, this probably isn't the right place for religious discussions, but I do believe that Jesus is God's son, that he died on the cross, and that he will return one day. :D

Well... getting back to our topic. :)

Paolini and Rowling don't have the history to be the greatest, yet.

Well, of course. We'll just have to wait and see if they stand the test of time. I know that HP probably will, but Paolini is still just getting off the ground.

Well, I like C. S. Lewis because of the way that he left a lot of the scenes and the world of Narnia up to your imagination. In other words, he wasn't as descriptive as Tolkein and Rowling.

Out of those authors, Rowling is my favorite cuz she has a way to keep the reader interested at all times. on the other hand, C.S. Lewis has slow-moving books that start out boring. but if u continue reading them, they have great plots! :D Paolini is good, too but like sumone else said, he's just getting off the ground.

Yes, I agree. Rowling has those perfect plot ideas and twists that make her stories some of the best in the world. And I also agree with C. S. Lewis. His stories can be a little boring for the people who like nonstop action and suspense. However, after finishing them, you can see that they all have such unique plots with deeper meanings than most realize.

Why wasn't there much of a choice? They are some of the most popular fantasy writers of the time.

Icebear should've filled up the 15 spaces on the poll.

My favourites in order.

Rowling: I thought it was not only a good plot, but some things are really funny and at sometimes serious. Also, Rowling knows what it feels like to have it hard and I give her credit for doing such a good job in the position that she was in.

Paolini: He is alright, but not that good since he has stolen ALOT of ideas, even the director of the Eragon movie Stephen something, said that and it was the reason that the urgals didnt have horns and Arya had rounded ears etc etc. Really, the total characters are not original. There's nothing really special about them.

Tolkien: I read part of this and got a bit bored because I thought that hobbits sounded like really dull creatures, like from some little fairytale. But I really should read the rest, I know. I have respect for how he is the best fantasy writer and stuff. Writers cant really say that the evil is dark and the good is light anymore really without sounding repetetive. The dark ring and the dark tower in the dark mountains. Makes me yawn just reading it. No, anyone writing a book, dont keep addressing all bad things as dark ALL the time.

C.S Lewis: Really, this seems like some little kids story. It does have its parts though.

Funke: So boring (sorry Valk and anyone else). Dont see how these books are special.

Don't know other guy...

I have to agree. Parts of Tolkien's books were ok, but there were some very boring parts. And Funke's books are utterly horrible except for one or two that I've read. Inkheart was such a waste of time.

By the way, I'm sorry I didn't put more authors up there. They were just some of the ones that I knew well and that I've read before.

Yeah its ok. You could always make up another topic with more when you're up for it if you really want to. Give us more to talk about. Name it something like "Which of these 15 writers is your fav?"

Yeah, well I saw a topic like this but you could only choose from 3 authors, so I decided to add a few more. If I feel like it I'll make another one.

You should as soon as possible (otherwise I will so I'm warning you  ). Can I ask you one favour though, if you are creating another topic (and to anyone else who is) can you add Stephanie Meyer? Cause that will make debates REALLY intresting...

Cornelia Funke- Ok I feel a alittle alone on this one but I LOVE her books...and for who ever said that her books are for 8 year olds...thats SO rude...but then again its what YOU think NOT me.

Pullman-I like his books...there not that bad.

C.S. Lewis- I read his books ALONG time ago, but still I like his books.

Tolkin- His Books are all right but still not the best

Rowling- I tried to read her books but they just dont fit my taste in books.

I read Twilight. My cousin is obsessed with it, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Nobody kill me for saying this, but it was just... ok. LOL. Like it definitely wasn't the worst book I'd ever read. But it certainly was not the best. Nowhere like Inheiritance or Harry Potter.

@Icebear: Me too! I really couldn't stand Inkheart. I read less than half and got so tired of it that I just had to stop! Plus Thief Lord and Dragon Rider weren't really that great either...

Who wrote the Artemis Fowl books again? Whoever it was, I don't like them either.

I read all of Inkheart, but it took me two or three tries. I read Dragon Rider and really liked it, though it took me a while to get through it. I got about a third of the way through Inkspell and had to quit cause it was so boring. I got half way through The Thief Lord and quit cause I wanted to read other stuff. I don't know. They are good books, but they just can't compete with other great fantasies.

As for Artemis Fowl, I haven't read any of those, and don't particularly want to. They look kind of stupid. :)

Alright, I don't understand the dislike of AF, which is a series that I took immense pleasure from. Dragon Rider was good, not great, but a good light read to put you to bed at night (I haven't read a book like that in years, captain underpants used to serve that purpose).

Now, I take enjoyment from three primary authors

1: Glenn Cook: Wrote the Black Company, called "Vietnam War fiction on Peyote (a hallucinogenic drug)" Brutal, violent, dark, yet very powerful. Not something for those who faint at the sight of blood. Not a story for children, or those with low levels of maturity. Excellent creation of atmosphere.

2: George R. R. Martin: Similar in categorization of gritty, realistic fantasy, but approaches it from more of a complex interplay of royal politics and brilliant characters. Martin's greatest strength and weakness is the complexity of his plot, and the fact that he has several primary POV's that he shifts in during the book. He's brutal toward his characters, so if you sympathize with the good guys too much, you will die with them. Also, most lovable anti-hero protag in fantasy so far, Tyrion Lannister. (look him up)

3: E. E. Knight: Primarily his "Age of Fire" series, more of a fantasy traditionalist than the above. Unique because his protagonists in all four books are dragons, each a character all their own. The third one is in my opinion the best, and most enjoyable, with an anti-hero protagonist, who imo isn't evil enough to hate. "Rugaard/The copper takes best character award"

Tolkien is my all time favorite, second would probably be C.S. Lewis, and third would be Paolini. I haven't read the books of the other three on the list. Brian Jacques is a very good author. If you haven't read the Redwall series then you need to.

I think Redwall's good for anybody of any age. My oldest siblings like it, and they are all in their 20's. There's going to be a movie? Then I'll have to see it when it comes out! Do you know which book it's going to be based on? Or will it be the entire series? Or maybe I should just look it up for myself
