Harry Potter fairy tales?
So I got this email from Borders that said Rowling wrote a new book called The Tales of Beetle the Bard. http://www.borders.com/online/store/Art ... 080801_REWHere be the article on Borders, I'll admit it doesn't make much sense to me. A collection of 5 short stories in the HP universe that tie in with Book 7 I suppose.

Re: Harry Potter fairy tales?
The "Tales of Beedle the Bard" played an important part in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
One of the five stories in the book, "The Tale of the Three Brothers" was the story which Xenophilias Lovegood explanation of what exactly were the Deathly Hallows.
It was after this event that Harry understood what was Voldemort after; the Deathstick, the Unbeatable Wand, the Elder Wand. It brought him to understand the visions of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and his search for the same.

Re: Harry Potter fairy tales?
Hi Dragon! No, it has nothing to do with when Voldemort was younger.
The book "Tales of Beedle the Bard," was a book, that according to HP&DH, was left to Hermione Granger in the will and testament of Albus Dumbledore. These tales are the ones the wizarding children grow up with; so Hermione being brought up as a muggle, was not aware or familiar with them until she received the gift from Dumbledore.
Last year, JK Rowling made seven copies of all the tales of Beedle the Bard, all of them handwritten and illustrated by her. From the seven, she gave six away and I know Melissa Anneli, from the Leaky Cauldron received one. One copy was placed for auction, all proceeds to charity. This copy was bought by Amazon.com.
So it seems that she is going public with the Tales, and again, all proceeds to charity. And that's the story behind this little book.
EDIT: I was trying to find an illustration of the original seven books and came across this info. Similar to what I wrote, but a lit more info: http://www.theage.com.au/news/books/bar ... 32774.html

Re: Harry Potter fairy tales?
The book's release date is scheduled for December 4th, this year. So I imagine the pre-orders may have made some kind of record pre-sales already. I'll need to do some investigating and pre-order two of the L/E ones. That's one of my kid's Xmas present!

Re: Harry Potter fairy tales?
It only has seven stories? Not much...
Is JK a bad drawer? I wonder if she attempts to draw Humpty Dumpty with a sorting hat or Little Boo Peep losing her nargles Yes... sounds like a book for me...

Re: Harry Potter fairy tales?
Beedle the Bard has only a handful of stories, (five in total), all created by J.K. Rowling.
Following is a newsclip which gives further details on the same. I am also posting pictures drawn by J.K. Rowling; actually the seven original volumes were hand-written and illustrated by her. So yes, she has an apt hand on drawing too!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ New Holy Grail for Potterheads For all you maniacal Harry Potter collectors out there, that first edition of Philosopher's Stone might no longer be the most valuable Potter-related book: the Telegraph reports today that J.K. Rowling has penned a book of fairy tales to accompany the series, but that just seven copies have been made. The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which features prominently in Deathly Hallows, features five tales from the days of wizard-yore. Rowling included the text of one of the tales in DH, but the other four are new. Each copy of the new book "is leather-bound and covered in crafted silver and jewels." Six of them have been given "to people who are 'most closely connected to the Harry Potter books'", but the seventh will reportedly be sold at Sotheby's in December, with proceeds going to charity. That's certainly going to be an auction to watch. I find it difficult to imagine that these tales won't make it into wider circulation, whether through an eventual trade edition or by some other means. But these seven copies will almost certainly be among the most important and highest-value HP items. Also on the HP front, see Scott Brown's post at FBB for an interesting look at colophon variations in the American edition of Deathly Hallows. [Update: Here's the Sotheby's page for the 13 December auction, which includes some illustrations of the Rowling artwork and the starting price for the copy to be sold: a hefty $62,000] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Illustrations in Beedle the Bard, made by J.K. Rowling ~~~ ~~~
The following is one of the seven originals:
Re: Harry Potter fairy tales?
I'm planning to save up and buy the Limited Edition.
What I don't know is if this L/E will use print for the publishing or will it just be a copy of her handwriting!
Re: Harry Potter fairy tales?
I don't think I'll be able to read her writing it reminds me so much of Daniel Radcliff's hand though.
So Annie let me get this straight, all the cover pictures and the coat of arms she drew and painted?
