Post The Dragonriders of Pern discussion group *spoilers*
Hey everybody. I just thought this would be a good forum, seeing as how Inheritance is based off of this series. I just finished reading The White Dragon and I am totally in love with Pern. I'm just about to start reading Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern. So, just come here to talk about the series, if you have read it.

Yep, another series I have lots of fun think about and playing around with. ^^ My big problem with them is that the dragons have, like, no personality whatsoever. -_- Just because they have poor memory doesn't mean they have all the emotional diversity of cardboard.
Well, that, and the main characters tend towards Mary-Sues and the books focus nigh-obsessively on Gold and Bronzeriders.

oh, i agree with you whole-heartedly. I wish they could go a little more in depth to the blue and green Riders. as for the dragons having no personality, i have to disagree with you. i think the dragons are fascinating and are just as complex as any of us.

Oh, blah, lost the thread or something.
Eh, still disagree on the personality thing. It's been a while since I read the books, but nothing ever stuck out to me about any of the dragons, except for Deborah's Morath (I think?) in Dragonseye. I liked her. ^_^ (Possibly Ruth as well, but it's been so long since I read the White Dragon, I barely remember any of it.) Dragonseye was definitely my favorite book in the series since it did focus more on the lower-ranked riders and dragons. In fact, I think Morath probably had more lines in the book than any other dragon of Anne Mcaffrey's I've seen. :?
But the other dragons I read just seemed like, I don't know, tokens to make the rider more important, just...there. I can't remember a significant or memorable comment from dragons other than Morath and Ruth.
And, I hope you don't mind a little plugging, but if anyone's interested, I have some DRoP fanfics on Fanfiction-dot-net. http://www.fanfiction.net/u/172951/Kitsuneko :)

Out of all the dragons I have read in the series so far, the only one who I didn't enjoy was Mnementh. He was too... blah. And way too intellectual for me. But otherwise, I think the dragons are quite unique to each of their Riders. Ramoth... wow. She has quite the temper, doesn't she?

I'm still stuck on how to pronounce his frickin' name. :-s
And, I don't know, maybe they seem more like caricatures to me: All gold dragons act arrogant and short-tempered, browns calm and dependable, and greens and blues are cheery and flirtatious, and they're just not...developed beyond that. :/
Do you prefer the older books or the newer ones with Todd?

I loved these books growing up. I happen to own all of the older ones.
As far as each of the Dragons being type cast according to their colors, You see that in human social orders as well.
I liked to beleive that a dragon developes it's colors in the egg as it developes it's personality... kind of natures way of sortin them out... Of course there are dragons who break out of the type casting. That is what makes them such great pivitol characters. The rest are just there to enhance the background so to speak. There are plenty of dragons made available that could be fleshed out later on in later books. It was part of Anne McCaffrey's genius.

I actually haven't read beyond The White Dragon. I've started Moreta, but I'm barely past the part where that one runner died mysteriously in the race at Ruatha. It's pretty engaging so far, just haven't gotten that far in yet.

Post Re: The Dragonriders of Pern discussion group
LOL!!! I was taking a break from packing when I was kinnda browsing through the site and I decided to check this topic out.

From the Pern series I have 16 of the books sitting in a box next to me. I read the complete series in Summer of 2006. I don't have all the books, I think I may be missing 3 or 4.

Now as to the personalities of the dragons, I think that the series was not meant to revolved completely around the dragons. The highlight of the series is of humans who left Earth and established in Pern.
Until they were able to enhance the genetics of the fire lizards and create the dragons, the stories were mostly revolving around the people, the way they have adapted to the planet and the hurdles they have faced in Pern.

These dragons are meant to perform a task, and they have a hierarchy. Note that the dragons cannot breathe flame on their own; they had to chew firestone in order to do so; so this leads me to believe that the dragons were never intended to have a developed personality. ( Well except a handful of them.)

As in the Harry Potter series, I could not choose just one "favorite" book. I love the Harper Hall Trilogy, The White Dragon, All the Wyers of Pern, the Skies of Pern, The MasterHarper of Pern, The Dolphins of Pern... and again, they are all awesome and unique in their own right.

I do feel that the saddest one all is Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern. That one was a bawling my eyes out one! McCaffrey made a couple of short stories related to Moreta, which are included in a compilation of Sci-Fi writers. And I think you can order Moreta online with Barnes & Noble.com or Amazon.com. They are still available. So check it out!

I really enjoyed The White Dragon. Ruth is an incredible dragon. Plus, it's my favorite because out of all the books I have read so far, that one focuses the most on the bond between dragon and Rider. It's in The White Dragon that the reader truly understands how close they are. Obviously, it's not as profound as the bond between Eragon and Saphira :D, who love each other as if they were brother and sister. But, it's still a close bond.

I've only read Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern. From that book I think it could a good series. I have yet to find more of the series though. I like the way the dragons can have deep emotions for the riders and visa versa. Its a good idea of the other planet circling Pern although i didn't understand some of it. I suppose that understanding comes from reading the other books. But anyway a good book none-the-less.

you could get them at any Barnes & Noble bookstore. They are relatively easy to find. Anne McCaffrey has written quite a few books.

There is a short story which Anne McCaffrey wrote about what Moreta was feeling while she went between. And by the time I finished reading it I was completely, totally and out of control crying my eyes out! I am re-reading the series in no particular order and I am falling in love with it all over again. I remember getting it from my local library. Let me know if you are up to it, Firetongue. I will find it, scan it and E-mail it to you if you are.

I started off with The White Dragon, went on to Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, The Masterharper of Pern, Dragonflight and last night I began with Dragonquest.

I'm reading the books in publishing order. I was told it was best if you read them in the order they were published, not in chronological order. So, I read Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon first. Which dragons do you like the best? I'm really starting to fall in love with Orlith, she's such a fascinating dragon. Ramoth was great too, but man, did she have a temper. Actually, now that I think of it, the only dragon I haven't really liked is Mnementh, and not just because his name is impossible to pronounce. He was too... intellectual and bland for me.

Dragonflight, Dragonquest, The White Dragon in publishing order (the preferred order).

Dragonsdawn, The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall, Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern for chronological order.

Yeah, it doesn't really matter which you start with because they're all pretty individual, but I would recommend you start with Dragonsdawn or else you won't really know what's going on in certain books :?

You know, each one was unique in their own time. I still like Ruth more since we get to learn and see a lot of interaction between him and Jaxom. To that you can add the fact that Ruth is a lot more intuitive than the rest of the dragons of Pern. It's as if him being smaller and white, all the best of dragons had been granted to him.

The stories DO start kind of slow. Then with all those confusing names... But once you get over that, they are a good read.

I'll admit, they are kinda slow and the characters are difficult to remember who's who. To make it easy, the only characters you should really know for the first three books are Lessa and Ramoth, F'lar and Mnementh, F'nor and Canth, Jaxom and Ruth, and Master Robinton. I guess you could also have Lytol, but he's not quite as important as the others.

The Harper hall Trilogy is good. But the The Masterharper of Pern is also outstanding. These are individual stories about Robinton, Piemur, and Menolly!!!!

It is confusing!!! It wasn't until I read , I think it was Dragonquest?, the one that explains about the earthlings landing on Pern and their initial colonization that I really got an understanding of the series. I was all: "Ohhhh" "So that explains this, "OHHHHHH, I see now" and so on!

I think I mentioned this before, (but I am tooooooo cold to read back, or should I say I'm too lazy) but I am enjoying the White Dragon again. I think this is the 4th time round I've read it.
I do recall mentioning that from all the books in the series, Jaxom and Ruth are the two who have the deepest connection and therefore the only Dragon & Rider who are discussed in depth in the whole series. At first I said; "Whoa!!! That cannot be right." But it actually is!!!

I got a new Anne McCaffrey book for Christmas this year. It's called Changelings. It's rather new, and it was written with Elizabeth Anne Scarborough. I can't wait to get started on it once I'm done with the 8 other books I'm reading right now.

Post Re: The Dragonriders of Pern discussion group *spoilers*
She's an amazing character. I'm currently in the middle of Dragonsdawn, and loving it. It's so fascinating how the dragons were created in the first place. Not to mention... I'VE FIGURED OUT THE PATH OF THREADFALL! It's actually relatively simple. It falls in a southwesterly drift everytime, and, more importantly, I know the exact path of Thread as it falls across the planet. Here, I'll put my notes up:

First Fall- Lemos: Igen Weyr combating
Second Fall- Igen Hold, Ista Hold: Igen Weyr and Ista Weyr combating
Third Fall- Nabol, Ruatha: High Reaches Weyr and Fort Weyr combating
Fourth Fall- Fort Hold: Fort Weyr combating
Fifth Fall- Southern Boll: Fort Weyr combating
Sixth Fall- Tillek: High Reaches combating
Seventh Fall- Bitra, maybe Lemos and Benden Hold: Benden Weyr combating
Eighth Fall- Half Circle Sea Hold, Keroon, maybe Igen Hold and Crom: Benden Weyr and High Reaches Weyr combating
Ninth Fall- Nerat Hold, Telgar Hold, Cove Hold, Nabol Hold: Telgar Weyr, Ista Weyr, and Southern Weyr combating
Tenth Fall- High Reaches Hold, Ista Hold: High Reaches Weyr and Ista Weyr combating
Eleventh Fall- Ruatha, Fort Hold, Southern Hold: Fort Weyr and Southern Weyr combating

Now, Threadfall runs for 375 miles and is 50 miles wide. It proceeds south approximately 150 miles at the beginning of each new series, and the next leading edge for each series is separated to the ssouth by 525 miles and to the west by 275 miles. So there you have it. The Threadfall formula.

Come on, guys. We had such a great topic here. Let's get it going again. Hey, has anyone read the new Pern novel by Todd yet? I'm really anxious to get to it. Does it occur during the 2nd Long Interval? I heard it was.

For those who know me, it's no secret how much I enjoyed and enjoy the series Dragonriders of Pern. Browsing over the internet I found a site which lists the books in order of publication date as well as the books and titles related to specific books.

It's a great guide for anyone who wants to re-read the series. Check it out!!!!!

LOL!!! If I am to be honest, and fearing to be rude, I really have no interest in the path of Threadfall. I am more into the lives of the characters, their daily struggles, and such.

Though if they moved the orbit of the Red Star, what else would there be to make a storyline about????

I don't know. I'm sure the McCaffrey's will figure something out.

I know we're more interested in the stuggles of the characters, but it's still pretty neat to look at, and know where Thread is falling and when.

Okay, I have to ask. Can anybody tell me the name of the book her son wrote? It's been forever since I posted in here... It's been forever since I read these books to... Lol, at one time I had the timeline of the books figured out, but I can't remember it... High school is no fun... And I'm about to be a junior... And it's almost 3 in the morning... I think I need to go to bed.

Anywho, if you can tell me the name, it would be much appreciated. Although you'll probably have to pm me, 'cause I hardly ever check this topic anymore.

SUGGESTED READING ORDERS OF BOOKS AND STORIES
IN ANNE MCCAFFREY’S PERN SERIES
Fans often ask for advice as to the order in which to read the books in the popular Dragonriders of Pern© series. Anne McCaffrey herself suggests you should read them in the order in which they were published. For most of the series written by Anne the chronological order is also the
publication order. But the Pern Series is the notable exception. For those of you who prefer to read
(or re-read) the Pern Series in chronological or story line order we are therefore including a second, chronological list. However, this list cannot give a pure chronological order because that is an impossibility – some of the books and stories take place during the same time period. For
example, a book like The Renegades of Pern spans a long period of Pern’s history in the run up to and during the Ninth Pass. As such, it runs parallel to several other books in the series.

1. Pern Books and Stories in order of Publication
 Dragonflight (1968)
The short stories “Weyr Search” and “Dragonrider” are incorporated in this book.
 Dragonquest (1971)
 Dragonsong (1976)
 Dragonsinger 1977)
 The Smallest Dragonboy, in: Get Off The Unicorn (1977)
 The White Dragon (1978)
The earlier publication “A Time When” (1975) is incorporated in this book.
 Dragondrums (1979)
 Moreta: Dragonlady Of Pern (1983)
 Nerilka’s Story (1984)
 Dragonsdawn (1988)
 The Impression, in: The Dragonlover’s Guide To Pern (1989)
 The Renegades Of Pern (1989)
 All The Weyrs Of Pern (1991)
 The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall (1993)
The earlier publications “Rescue Run” (1991) and “The Dolphin’s Bell” (1993) are incorporated in this book.
 The Girl Who Heard Dragons, in: The Girl Who Heard Dragons (1996)
 Dragonseye, published as Red Star Rising in the UK (1996)
 The Masterharper Of Pern (1998)
 Runner Of Pern, in: Legends (anthology edited by Robert Silverberg) (1999)
 The Skies of Pern (2001)
 A Gift of Dragons (2002) The short story “Ever the Twain” is incorporated in this book.
Dragon’s Kin (with Todd McCaffrey) (2003)
 Beyond Between, in: Legends II (anthology edited by Robert Silverberg) (2004)
Dragonsblood (by Todd McCaffrey) (2005)
Dragon’s Fire (with Todd McCaffrey) (2006)

2. Pern Books and Stories in Chronological Order
 Story “Survey P.E.R.N.” in: The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall
 Dragonsdawn
 Story “The Dolphin’s Bell” in: The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall
 Story “The Ford Of red Hanrahan” in: The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall
 Story “The Second Weyr” in: The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall

These are all the books I've read in the series.
** Dragonflight (1968)
** Dragonquest (1971)
** Dragonsong (1976)
** Dragonsinger 1977)
** The White Dragon (1978)
** Dragondrums (1979)
** Moreta: Dragonlady Of Pern (1983)
** Nerilka’s Story (1984)
** Dragonsdawn (1988)
** The Renegades Of Pern (1989)
** All The Weyrs Of Pern (1991)
** The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall (1993)
** The Masterharper Of Pern (1998)
** The Skies of Pern (2001)
** The Dolphins of Pern

** A Gift of Dragons (2002)
This is one book and it includes the following stories:
** The Smallest Dragonboy,
** The Girl Who Heard Dragons,
**The Impression --This one I cannot remember if it's included in this book)
** Runner Of Pern,

Since I still have boxes of my stuff in my daughter's basement, I cannot verify if The Impression is included in A Gift of Dragons.

In regards to “Beyond Between” in: Legends II (anthology edited by Robert Silverberg) I took the book as aloan from the local library. This is the story of what Moreta lived when she went in between during her heroic effort to save lives during the terrible epidemic that almost finished off the inhabitants of Pern. I need to point out that the story is so touching, I cried my eyes out.

Wait. How could Moreta have any thoughts when she was between if it only takes three winks for dragon and Rider to freeze to death? That seem kinda... impossible, except for unimportant fleeting thoughts like "I never did the laundry today," or something.

If they're going someWHERE it only takes 3 winks. If they're going someWHEN it takes longer. Which is why going between time is so much more dangerous than the already dangerous, everday between places.

Remember, when Lessa and Ramoth went between to bring the Weyrs forward, she almost died, because she went back in time so far.

If I have the chance and the time, I'll go to the library, (it's just across my street) see if they have the book available, photocopy the story and e-mail it to you.

But Lessa and Ramoth also did it in one jump, not take in seperate intervals like you're supposed to do so the dragon can recuperate.

Oh, did you all notice that a second edition of the Dragonlover's Guide to Pern has been released? It's detailing life on Pern after AIVAS was introduced and Thread was destroyed. It's really very cool, but I'm only sticking with the first edition so I don't get any spoilers for how they manage to do it. And, with the aid of the Guide, I'm finally able to understand not only the complex relationship between dragon and Rider, and how big the dragons actually are, but I can confirm my Threadfall theory!

It's official. My threadfall theory is correct. I have gone over the charts countless times and did the scientific method on it, and my theory is correct. I just finished All the Weyrs of Pern and now doing First Fall.

What did you all think about how the engines were used? I thought it was very clever, using the engines of the Yokohama to blow the Red Star off its orbit.

I love these books. They are my absolute favorite. I own half of the series, and still working through it. I've read the original series, the ones that focus on Lessa, F'lar, Ramoth, Mnementh, Jaxom and those guys + I own all these as well. I've got to find time to read the rest now that I have a library card

Well I know a few of you are into this series, and I just wanted to let everyone who's interested know that I finally decided to join in the fun. I just finished the first book (Dragonflight) today and greatly enjoyed it. :D Too bad the local book store is 45 minutes away... and I'm completely out of money... gah.

Ha ha! I knew you'd like them. I've got all five of the books that pertain directly to Lessa, F'lar, and their family and friends.

You have to read the second one though, as quickly as possible, Dragonquest that book will really throw you in. There is a particular spot that nearly tore my heart out. Out of all the books I've read that one and All the Weyrs of Pern are the only ones that made my cry.

Oo, if they've drawn you in that much then they must be good. Gah I don't know when I'll be able to go back and get the second one!! Or when I'll have enough money... maybe our library has it, though I doubt it. It's kind of tiny. I am excited to keep reading the series though. :D

Sorry for the double-post, but it's been a long time and I need to update! :D

Anyway, I got all of the five main books (F'lar/Lessa/etc) and the Dolphins of Pern. I haven't read Dolphins yet and I'm a little over halfway through The Skies of Pern.

These books are awesome, and my favorite characters at the moment are Jaxom and Ruth (The White Dragon and All the Weyrs were my favorite books).

Once I'm done with Skies and Dolphins I'd like to move on to some of the books taking place earlier in time. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Well If you haven't read Moreta yet you definitely should, since she is mentioned alot.

And guess what, those are my favorite too! I actually named my first dog Jaxom!

And I have to ask what did you think about what happened in the second book, between Brekke and Kylara(?) I think that was her name, between their dragons I mean? I was soooooo mad at that part. I wished with every part of my being that I could beat Kylara(?)!!

I also cried at the end of the [sorta] fourth one when Masterharper Robinton died and his little firelizard

Oo yes I was definitely planning on reading Moreta. That'll probably be my next purchase lol. 8)

And that part made me incredibly angry as well. Poor Brekke. I think after Jaxom and Ruth I really like F'nor and Canth as well as Brekke. They're kinda always on the sidelines but secretly awesome. If that makes sense. Stupid Kylara.

And yes the part with Robinton was terribly sad to read. He was cool, and just the way that scene was written made it very tragic. Also, I like how on the cover of the book about him he has a bottle of wine in hand. Hehe Masterharper Robinton--you will be missed.

*narrows eyes against tears* You had to remind me of that Kit. *sniffle* I always thought Robinton should have been a Dragonrider, but somehow it suited him to not be. He did so much more as Masterharper than he would have as a Weyr Harper.

Brekke? Her dragon was Wirenth right? And Kylara was Prideth? (Been a few years, can't remember exactly.) That seriously po'ed me. >.< I wish she had Imprinted with that second queen, but, again, it was better that she didn't.

What's the name of the kid from the short story collection that Imprinted the bronze? He and his dragon were my absolute favorites, even though they didn't really show up that much, that I can remember. :?
