Post Safe Haven
This looks like as good a place as any Oceanis, Raven said to her partner, pacing around and checking out her surroundings. There was plenty of tree cover and a water source just a few feet away, and they were standing on a slight rise. If she were to step out of the trees in any direction, she would be able to see anyone approaching for miles. By land, anyways, she thought pensively. The thought made her turn around and survey the location with new eyes. They were near the Surdan border, just a few miles away from the Empire. There was a good chance that at one time or another, Thorn or some other Imperial dragon would do a flyover. So it pleased her to see that the trees lining the clearing had long, leafy branches that would conceal it from above.

She nodded her head and turned to her heart bond. This will definitely do, but let's go with the dugout blueprint this time. This is a high risk location and an aboveground structure has more of a chance to be discovered, she said to the cerulean dragoness, pulling a blueprint from the satchel slung across one shoulder and resting on the opposite hip.

Agreed. Mmmm... But not that dugout. We're in Surda now, it will be mostly families coming this way. The one with two sleeping rooms and a storeroom would be better, Oceanis replied, peering at the blueprint over her Rider's shoulder. Raven mumbled in agreement and picked out the blueprint Oceanis had suggested.

We'll have to adjust the measurements a bit, this rise isn't quite big enough for the ones suggested here, she added.

"You're right again. Don't you ever get tired of that?" the Rider teased. She ducked as Oceanis lightly lashed out with her wing.

No I don't, she replied with a chuckle. She walked across the rise, dragging her tail behind her. She carefully marked out an outline and turned to look at Raven. There, what do you think? she asked.

"That's perfect. You get started on that big room at the front while I get started on the storeroom to the right," Raven answered. Before she started, the Rider removed the dragoness's saddle and set it under a tree off to the side so it would be out of the way. She unfolded the camping shovel from one of her saddlebags and set to work removing the earth from the outline Oceanis had scratched in the earth. A few feet away, Oceanis was lazily scooping the dirt away with one paw. Raven grimaced at how easy she had it, but refrained from using magic. They had three more structures similar to this to build, along with a special project Raven had in mind. She needed to conserve her strength.

"Eight feet down should be plenty far enough," she said as an afterthought as Oceanis reached into the hole she had made. Her leg sank down into it up to the knee. After that they worked in silence. By the end of the day, Oceanis had finished both of the larger rooms and Raven had finished the storeroom. Tomorrow they would streamline it a bit, then start working on the roof.

Little one, what are the chances of anyone using these safehouses we are building? Oceanis asked her Rider as they sat watching the stars from one of the holes they had made. When there was no reply, she looked down and couldn't help but smile. Raven had fallen asleep with her head pillowed on her dragon's leg. The cerulean hummed softly and curled her head and tail around the girl protectively before covering them both with her wing and drifting off to sleep.

OOC: This is going to be slow, maybe a little action involving Galby's soldiers, but that's about it. Anyone is welcome to join :)

Post Re: Safe Haven
Anthor rode silently on Gornath's back using the dragon's eyes to see the ground below. The vibrant purple, and blue hues of the ground still amazed the rider after all his years with his dragon. The rider and dragon were flying on a short patrol of the Surdan borders, partly because raids from the Empire were becoming more frequent since the battle at the Burning Plains, but mainly because the rider and dragon were tired of dealing the the authority thrust upon them as the leaders of the isle dragons.

It had been some time since the two of them had felt the simple freedom of simply leaving and flying where they pleased. Anthor was happy that Gornath had trained Rema to watch the islands and lead the dragons therein while he and Gornath had more time in solitude. This was a much needed break from the mundane life of basically a govenor of a conglomeration of two different tribes of dragons.

As the two of them flew over the border; Gornath's eyes suddenly soomed in on a heavily forested area close to the border. Anthor too studied the place and asked, "Did you see something, Gornath?"

The powerful white dragon answered, I am not sure. I thought I saw some movement, I do not know if it was an animal or possibly something else. However, it is best if we look; for if it is a group of soldiers and we fail to report or kill them then many lives could be lost before the attack is repelled. said the dragon as he silently circled back around and into a cloud to hide his advance upon the forest.

When he neared the edge of the forest; the dragon could already see that the trees were growing far to thick for him to fly among them, so the dragon angled himself to land just outside of the treeline. With a swift rush of wings and a semi-soft thud the large white dragon landed and bore his teeth expecting an attack.

When no such response came, the dragon silently kneeled down to allow his rider to slip off. As the human rider jumped to the ground and unsheathed his twin swords, Gornath entered the forest. Had he been smaller, the white dragon might have entered quietly, but as it was, the white dragon broke small trees, cracked limbs and crunched leaves; leaving large prints in his wake as he and Anthor walked into the forest.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Oceanis's head snapped out from under her wing and her lip pulled back from her fangs, a low growl starting deep in her chest. She thought she'd heard someone...there it was! There were heavy footsteps, paw-steps rather, coming their way, accompanied by a riot of snapping branches, the rustle of dry grass, and the squeak of small-furred-snack-beings. Oceanis peered swiftly under her wing at Raven, then carefully maneuvered out from under her without waking the girl. The dragon, for she knew nothing but a dragon walked that heavily, kept coming, not bothering to try and conceal it's approach. It would have been all but impossible in the close-set trees. The cerulean knew full well that there was a path through the trees that would not tear at the dragon's vulnerable wing-membranes as her Rider had sang the trees into shape the other day to give her an easy path through the trees. But she was not going to tell this dragon that, not when he could be an enemy.

She lifted her muzzle to the air and scented the wind that was blowing straight into her face. Definitely a male dragon, and definitely heading straight for them. She settled into a low crouch, readying herself for a fight. She hesitated for a moment, then reached out to Raven's sleep muddled thoughts.

Little one, you must wake up. There is a dragon and possibly his Rider coming directly towards us. Wake up, Raven, she called softly. Her wing twitched as the red-brown-haired girl leaped to her feet, her sword sliding effortlessly from it's sheath.

Where are they? Raven asked silently, her sword following her gaze as her eyes flicked back and forth between the shadows created by the trees. The Rider was slightly alarmed to see that the sun was high in the sky. They had slept through the night and on through the morning. It had to be at least two o'clock, maybe three. She growled, sounding surprisingly like Oceanis, and cursed her laziness. If she had woken up on time, they could have finished and been long gone before this Pair had had time to sneak up on them.

A flash of white between the trees reached her eyes just as Oceanis flicked her wing in the direction the wind was coming from. I see them, she said tightly, moving to stand next to Oceanis. Her father's sword, Kveykva, spun in a circle as she flipped it over her hand in anticipation.

Post Re: Safe Haven
When he heard the low rumble ahead of them, Anthor silently slipped away from Gornath in an attempt to circle behind whatever was in the forest. He heard the growl so it had to be a large beast, or worse, a dragon of some sort. As Anthor moved from Gornath the two separated their minds and began to extend their consciousnesses carefully toward whatever might lay ahead of them.

After a few minutes, Anthor encountered two consciousnesses as he searched about. Both of them seemed powerful. He did not prod or attempt to enter the mind because he could tell from the brightness and size that it had to be a dragon and rider of some sort. Anthor continued his trip until he was well behind whoever they were and began to creep up on them with all the stealth he could muster.

Gornath continued his less than inconspicuous walk toward the being or beings. He continued to go forward even when he heard the growl of the beast. He too let loose a powerful growl and allowed some white hot fire to lick around his partially open maw. As the dragon walked he noted that the limb around him scratched and clawed at his vulnerable wing. The scratches soon caused small droplets of blood to splatter on the ground as he walked by. He growled again and then made his presence known by losing a deafening roar. The powerful white dragon then said, Who are you? Why do you conceal yourself in the trees? Show yourself and face me. I am Gornath one of the last of the old ways, student of Bascth and tutor of Braith. Show yourself!

Post Re: Safe Haven
A muscle on the side of Raven's neck twitched with nerves as she felt a tendril of thought brush against her mind. She could feel the power of the mind behind the probe, yet the mind did not try to attack. Whoever it was was ancient and powerful compared to herself. She partially shielded herself, throwing up a few thin barriers between their mind and her own. She entertained no thought of being able to hold them off for long if they attacked, but maybe she could just long enough to cut them with Kveykva. At any rate she needed to hide parts of her mind and the secrets they held, hence the barriers.

She turned to face the direction the probe had come from. If they had touched her mind, they had touched Oceanis's, meaning they would know that she must be skilled enough to tell which direction they were coming from. Weak, unskilled Riders didn't last long in these days and times. They've split up. The Rider is coming from behind you now, she said impassively, settling into a ready position, her blue blade held before her with both hands. Oceanis tensed next to her as the white dragon growled, then roared a challenge.

I am Oceanis, daughter of Greentalon, student of none. And I hide from no one! It is you who sneak about like a thief in the night! she snarled fiercely, cerulean and dark blue flames flickering in her nostrils and between her teeth. Like her Rider, she could sense that the dragon before her was old and powerful, but that did not worry her. If he threatened her Rider, she would rend him limb from limb and then his Rider as well.

"Show yourselves! Or are you cowards that attack from the shadows? I am Raven, Rider of Oceanis, daughter of a Rider of old!" she challenged, spinning Kveykva through a series of forms to show that she was not to be taken lightly. A vision of a massive white dragon flashed through her mind, coming from Oceanis. They were close enough to attack now. She was tempted to look, but she had just seen a flash of metal in between the trees. She zeroed in on the target, then lifted her left hand off Kveykva's hilt and sent a bolt of blue lightning at the flash.

Post Re: Safe Haven
The response of the petulant dragon angered Gornath greatly. He then tore at the trees in front of him and ripped up the ground beneath him as he hurtled toward the dragon. He roared again and bathed the foliage around him in powerful white flames. When he got free of the thickest part of the trees, he then steadied himself to view the creatures in front of him. He could see the dragoness, and her rider. When he had cleared the brush around him; Gornath angrily stepped forward releasing a jet of flame that parted and singed the grass near his adversaries and said, Do I sneak as a thief youngling?

Anthor sighed when he realized that the rider could tell exactly where he was. He then began to attempt to overwhelm the dragon and rider with his mind, while at the same time walking into the small clearing and making his presence known. The rider frowned and said, "Why are you this close to the Surdan border, especially without announcing your presence?" said the rider somewhat sternly.

Sarai padded through the forest, her tail tip twitching. She stopped to sniff at the hoofprint of a deer, then raised her head when she felt something large moving ahead of her. Two large somethings, actually. She tilted her head to the side. Felt like two dragons. And big ones to boot. Curious, she abandoned her hunt for the elusive deer and sprang forward into a run, maneuvering expertly around trees and boulders. Soon they were close, and she slowed to a trot. She paused just at the edge of a small clearing and studied the situation. The ones closest to her seemed to be ready for battle. Now that she was closer she could sense twolegs as well. She could feel one sneaking around toward her on her left, and the other was standing near the dragon in front of her. The dragon that was farthest away was big. She shivered at the size of it's bulk. It too seemed like it was ready for some sort of fight. But it also seemed like they hadn't seen each other yet. Even as she thought this, the one farthest away from her roared and sprang forward, ripping trees from the ground and tearing the ground itself to bits. She looked around when she heard the Rider a bit to her left speak to her left. Her mind searched for something to do before this actually turned into a full out battle. In front of her and a bit to her right she could sense a few holes in the ground. Not very deep, but definitely big enough for her to fall into. She smiled as a plan to ease the tension. She would act like a hatchling. It had been a while since she'd been able to act so childish. With that decided, she uttered a squeak and darted forward eagerly, her eyes bright. She chirped again and bumped into the dragon closest to her. She squealed and shook her head to clear it; those scales were hard.. She scrambled to her paws and padded cautiously forward to sniff at what she'd bumped into. She snorted and skittered to the side, away from the leg, then squealed again when she 'accidentally' fell into one of the holes. She twisted and landed on her paws like a cat, then looked up and chirped mournfully. of course she could climb out, but a normal hatchling wouldn't be able to. She was laughing inside at her own antics; this was fun.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Oceanis roared and reared back on her hind legs, beating the air with her wings so strongly that the fire near her and Raven created by the dragon was completely smothered. She arced her neck and loosed a tongue of flame right back, singing the grass directly in front of his paws. No I guess not, I suppose you have some spine after all! she sneered, placing her forepaws back on the ground. Her eyes sparkled with strength and an eagerness to pit herself against a worthy opponent. Maybe you'll give me a bit of a fight after all! she snarled fiercely, completely unintimidated by how much large he was than her. Her tail lashed against the ground when his Rider attempted to subdue her mind and Raven's.

Oceanis didn't hesitate to join her mind with her Rider's, lending Raven her strength as the girl lashed out with her own mind.

Raven widened her stance as Oceanis reared beside her, steadying herself in the violent gusts of wind the dragoness created. The heat from the white dragon's flames lessened and then died completely as Oceanis put out the fire near them. Raven grinned savagely at her dragon's ferocity, and sent a sharp lance created of her thoughts plunging into the enemy Rider's mind. Oceanis's strength augmented the force of her mental blow, making it far stronger than any attack a normal human, or human-elf in her case, could have produced.

"What do you care, Imperial slime? It won't matter once you're dead!" she snarled, lunging forward and slashing at his hip with Kveykva.

She stopped in the middle of her charge and looked down at a hatchling that had just bumped into Oceanis's leg. It's lavender eyes didn't move like a normal dragon's, nor did the pupils contract with the light. She was blind. Raven looked uncertainly from the black-gold hatchling to the Rider before her. If he was an enemy, the little hatchling was in danger. She stepped protectively in front of it and slashed once more at the Rider, but they weren't close, it was more of a warning.

She flinched and looked behind her as the sound of something heavy hit the bottom of the dug out behind her. The hatchling had fallen into the hole. Before she could do anything, Oceanis had reached in and swiftly fetched the hatchling out of the hole, holding her close to her side and covering her with her wing.

Stay close to me youngling, I will not let them hurt you, Oceanis said, not bothering to shield the thought. She looked up at the white dragon again and snarled, but this time it wasn't fierce or cocky, it was filled with a protectiveness for this hatchling she didn't even know. She heard Raven walk backwards towards her, getting into position to better protect the young dragon.

OOC: Not at all, although I just had to alter my post, 'cause you replied right before me, lol. :)

Anthor frowned even more when the dragon used her mind to help fight against his mental assault. Anthor was confused at being called Imperial Slime, but before he could voice his questions to the rider and dragon; his face contorted in pain and concentration as the dragoness and the rider delved deep into his mind, then the rider remembered his training and began to fight back fiercely, attempting to subdue the joint minds of the dragoness and her rider. The task was much easier within his mind because he could control his thoughts; however, the rider's concentration broke as a dragon, barely more than a new hatchling scampered across the secluded clearing and then fell into a hole. When his concentration broke he felt the minds within his own take a quick glimpse of his memories, several of which dealt with his training as a rider on Vroengard. When he saw the rider grab the dragon, Anthor screamed with rage. He blocked the cut aimed at him by the rider and said, "Let.... the hatchling go.... now." said the rider as he struggled to regain control over his mind.

Gornath curled his lips in rage as the dragon tried to bait him with insults. The powerful white dragon was about to charge when a hatchling ran across the field and ran into the leg of the smaller dragoness. The white dragon narrowed his eyes and was about to question them, but he saw Anthor and even felt the rage boiling within the rider. The white dragon said, Do not hurt the hatchling. We will let you leave, but do not harm the hatchling. said the dragon in a low and dangerous voice. Then the dragon said, We do not serve the Empire. We are of the riders of old; we are some of the last to survive the fall.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Sarai knew that all four of them had seen her. Her plan was working well so far. She squealed for real when a massive paw dipped into the hole she was in and scooped her up gently. She wriggled a bit but didn't try to get away. Though she was a bit surprised when she felt herself being held close to the dragoness's side and covered with a wing. She chirped and nuzzled the blue's side in gratitude. She wriggled again until she could 'see' what was going on from behind the blue's wing. She snorted with surprise when the other Rider screamed with rage at the sight of her being grabbed. She tilted her head. Perhaps her plan wasn't going as smoothly as she'd hoped. She recoiled a bit when the male Rider spoke. Okay, yeah, things weren't going as planned, exactly. Time to smooth things over for real. She wriggled away from the dragoness and then darted forward between the two Riders. She stood between the two, looking from one to the other despite her blindness. That is quite enough, I think. she said firmly, and snorted scornfully, like a horse would if it were irritated. She shook herself, flaring her wings briefly. Isn't there enough fighting in Alagaësia without having squabbles like this? she said pointedly. She sat on her haunches and started licking the talons on her left forepaw. I can go where I please, thank you. I am old enough to take care of myself. I'm Sarai Súndavfodhr (Shadowmarked), by the way, daughter of Jia Kuldrskular (Goldscales) and Shruikan Súndavblaka (Shadowwing). she said. She snorted to herself. She'd named herself aptly; she would forever be in Shruikan's shadow, even after he was long gone and dead, if even that happened. Dragons weren't known to die from old age. She lowered her paw to the ground. Eka weohnata néiat haina ono un ach néiat lyst ono vandr (I will not harm you and do not wish you ill). she said in the Ancient Language, blinking her lavender-flecked-with-grey eyes. She'd gotten into that habit of saying she meant no harm because some people were wary of her at first because of who her father was, so she said the opposite right from the start. Who might you four be? she asked, swishing her tail back and forth.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven took a quick glimpse behind her at the white dragon as she felt her mental blow break through the other Rider's shields. A brief flood of images flashed through her mind, most of which were of the Rider, Anthor, and his bonded partner, Gornath, training on Vroengard. Her eyes narrowed to slits and she recoiled within her own mind, confused and unprepared for his memories because of the distraction the hatchling had caused. She shook her head to clear it, then focused in on Anthor. Her thoughts were still jumbled, but one of the impressions she had gotten from the man was that he was afraid they were going to hurt the black-gold. Why would a servant of Galbatorix be worried about a dragon getting hurt? she grumbled to herself, frustrated when she was unable to figure it out.

I think we're missing something, Oceanis, she said to her heart-bond, warily looking back to the Rider. His face was contorted with rage and he was trying to talk, but his voice was so strained she couldn't understand the words. She howled with frustration at the noise around her; between the roars of two dragons, the Rider's angry shouts, and her own racing thoughts, she couldn't think straight.

"MALTHINAE!!!!!" she bellowed, once again raising her left hand. Her palm flashed white, and then silence settled over the clearing as her spell chained the Rider and his dragon in place. The effort to keep the spell going was enormous, but Raven was as strong as an elven spellcaster by her heritage and stronger than them because of her bond with Oceanis. She felt a steady drop in her energy the longer she kept the spell going, and once again merged her mind with Oceanis's so she could draw on the cerulean's strength.

She mumbled an alteration to her spell, one that would allow the Rider to talk but not to move. "I am no threat to this hatchling. Who are you and why did you and your dragon burst in on us like that?" she demanded harshly, a dull throb forming above her right eye. She was going to ask more questions, but the hatchling jumped in between the two of them and spoke. Raven stared at her, completely taken aback by the mature voice emanating from the dragoness's mind. She looked up at Oceanis for confirmation that the voice was the black-gold's.

Oceanis started, the loud rumble in her chest dying off as the white male in front of her suddenly stopped dead in his tracks. The cerulean dragoness looked down at her Rider, she could feel the spell that imprisoned the dragon and his Rider drawing on Raven's strength. She flicked her gaze back to the white dragon and gave him a warning growl, her eyes telling him it was useless to struggle against the magic.

She felt Raven's surprise as the black-gold hatchling jumped out from under her wing and between the two Riders. Her head whipped around and she stared down at the black-gold as a shockingly mature mind touched her own and Raven's. Her lip curled back slightly at the mention of Shruikan, but she was inclined to trust her. It was impossible to lie in the elven tongue, and she had sworn she meant them no harm.

Who are you hatchling? Tell me quickly, I am in no mood for games, she growled, her annoyance with the white male and the two-claw-man-Rider permeating her thoughts. She tapped Raven's mind, acknowledging that it was indeed the hatchling who had spoke. Although Oceanis now doubted whether she was as young as she seemed.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Gornath's eyes widened as he felt himself unable to move. The magic holding him was enormous; however, he was sure he would eventually break it. The dragon and rider were too young to suppress his and Anthor's power for very long. The dragon then began to fight against the power. He could tell from the coloration on the face of the rider that she would end the spell before too much longer because of the strain.

Anthor fought hard to control his rising anger. He had managed to keep control over himself ever since the accidental death of Arget in Du Weldenvarden all those years ago. Still, it was an enormous task to control his emotions. The spell to hold him in place only worsened things. He said to the rider, "You would have been better to use another spell. One that does not directly draw from your own power, for Gornath and I will eventually break these bonds." said the rider dangerously.

Then, after a few minutes of struggeling with hi inner rage; the rider said, "I am Anthor, one of the last of the riders from before the time of Galbatorix. I am likely only alive now because my masters, Voenth and Bascth sent Gornath and I on a mission to Du Weldenvarden. We attacked because you are so close to the Surdan border, and we will tolerate no attacks on the people of Surda." said the rider as he began to fight against the spell with a renewed earnest. He then said, "If you do not soon release the spell it will likely kill you. Rider or not." said the rider who had calmed down much.

Gornath looked at the young dragons and said to the smallest, Has not Shuriken spoken of us. I am Gornath, the dragon of light, one of the few dragons left who received the same rider's training as he. Surely he has spoken of me, for we have crossed paths many times; sadly I have not yet managed to kill him though I have bested him.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Sarai's eyes narrowed and she glared at the blue dragoness. I am who I am. I am not my father. she said firmly, growling softly. She snorted and bent her head to lick her shoulder, smoothing a scale down. When Gornath spoke a snarl ripped from her chest and she whirled on him, her face wrinkled back to expose her teeth at the male dragon. Shruikan may be my father, but do not by any means try to name me an Imperial dragon! she hissed angrily, her eyes flashing. I intruded on you four because I'm tired of fighting and blood shed. I've seen enough of it to last me a life time. Please don't assume I am evil just because of my heritage. That is narrow minded and you know it. Shruikan is my sire, nothing more. I am sick and tired of people judging me because of him. she snapped, her tail tip twitching. It's like saying I don't like you because your scales are white. Or you because your scales are blue. she said, glancing behind her at the dragoness. It wouldn't be fair. No offense meant, but you four should know better than that, since all of you are from before the Fall. she muttered. Her scales bristled. Unfortunately, she did have her fathers quick temper. She scowled and sat back down on her haunches, her tail flicking. Sorry. That just really rubs my scales the wrong way when others assume my allegiance before they even get to know me. she said, staring at the ground.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven narrowed her eyes at the Rider before her. She hated it when people underestimated her power. "Do not presume to know the limits of my strength. I am so much more than you would ever believe, human," she said, laying a light emphasis on the word human. If she hadn't altered her features to blend in better inside the Empire, it would have been easy to see her elven blood, even if she was half-and-half.

She looked him up and down when he swore he would let no one hurt the people of Surda. "Well then... If you are telling the truth and you do not serve the Empire, you are in luck. I do not serve that tyrant king either. He is responsible for the death of my father and his dragon," she said, cutting off the magic abruptly, although she kept her sword at the ready.

Oceanis looked at the hatchling with the lavender-grey eyes for a moment, her normally expressive eyes shadowed and hiding her thoughts. She considered the diminutive female before her for a moment, and then snorted with amusement, putting her eye on a level with Sarai's. You presume much yourself, youngling. I am only seven years out of egg myself, she said with a chuckle. And forgive me for not making myself clearer. I want to know who you are that a hatchling like yourself has such a mature mind, she added, sending along an impression of what Sarai's mind felt like.

She turned from Sarai to study the white male before her as Raven ended her spell. You truly do not serve the king? she asked him. She was generally more inclined to trust other dragons over any two-legs, unless the two-leg was Raven. She relaxed slightly, but like her Rider beside her, she remained poised for combat.

Post Re: Safe Haven
"You assume too much about your power. I have learned much as a rider and would assume that one as young as you have not trained as one should, so no matter your power whether human, elven, or whatever you may be, you cannot begin to fathom the power Gornath and I have attained." said Anthor with a sarcastic smirk. The added, "Because if you are so powerful, then Galbatorix would already be dead and we would never have had this conversation." said the rider as he sheathed his swords and the red in his eyes subsided and they went back to their original brown.

Gornath hissed angrily and said to the hatchling, You should have more respect for your elders, and I never said that you had sided with Galbatorix. That much was easy to see, for he would never have allowed you to leave Uru'Baen. So do not put words into my mouth...hatchling. said the white dragon with an annoyed voice. Then, when the spell was released, he looked at the rideress and said, Galbatorix and Shuriken were not more powerful than Voenth and Bascth, yet they overcame them. Why? Because Galbatorix is wise and cunning beyond his years. We do not have to be stronger than you, just smarter. said the dragon as he walked closer to the two dragons and the rider to observe them more closely.

The white male looked at the cerulean dragoness through his bright red eyes and said, If I served the king, then there would have likely been more than just Anthor and myself. Also, had we been with the Empire, we would not have announced our presence by walking into the forest. I would have simply burned it down. said the battle-scarred dragon as he moved his head so that he looked at the smaller cerulean eye to eye.

Sarai scowled and snorted, bristling slightly. She forced herself to dip her head slightly to the older male, but her eyes sparkled with defiance. I go where I please, thank you. I'd kick Shruikan into the next century if he even tried to control me. For me, respect is not a given thing. Respect, like trust, must be earned. Give me a reason to respect you, and I will without hesitation. Not before. But....I do pologize, Gornath-elda. I, unfortunately, did inherit my quick temper from my father. she muttered. She looked at Oceanus and her eyes glittered with a bit of mischief, though she didn't reply. She got to her paws and turned, padding toward the hole that she'd fallen into. She stopped right at the edge and peered down. So, mind telling me what you are doing here? I'm curious. she said, then lifted her head. And to answer your question, Oceanus, I'm mature because I have to be. To fight when I need to, protect my friends and my family. And control my powers. she said. In truth I'm probably only a month and a half old. Maybe two months now. I've lost count, to be honest. Age doesn't matter much when you're dead. she said flatly.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven's face whitened with indignation and she scowled, her grip tightening around Kveykva's hilt until she held the sword in a strangle-hold. "You know it is Eragon and Saphira who are destined to kill that blasted king. If not, I would have already done it!" she growled at Anthor. She glowered at him some more, then sheathed her sword, practically throwing it into the black leather. She would never admit that she had not been formally trained by a Rider, even though it was more than obvious, considering the state their Order was in. She had been trained by the elves though, and in her opinion, that was as good as since there had been no Rider around.

She turned to Oceanis in time to hear Gornath's words to her. "Not necessarily old one, his minions have been known to stray from home on their own every now and then," she said. Her tone held infinitely more amounts of respect for the dragon than it did his Rider.

"We were under orders from the Varden to build safe-houses along this path between Surda and the Empire for any refugees that might come this way. We started this one yesterday, and were sleeping off our exertions when that gallumph and his dragon showed up," the Rider said to Sarai, pointing over her shoulder at Anthor.

Perhaps not, but I do not agree. If you had been one of the King's dragons, you would not have simply set fire to these trees. You would have had to first confirm that we are indeed the enemy, which you can't do by simply flying over, you would have to land and approach through the trees. It's why we chose this spot, Oceanis said, looking Gornath straight in the eye. She tensed slightly; one could never know how an older dragon would react to a younger one showing them up, to use the human term. She stared back at him solemnly for a moment, and then twisted her head until she was looking at Sarai again.

You are a brave hatchling. I like you, she said, a smile coloring her thoughts. She had rarely met a hatchling so young that was also so brave. Although, she had hardly met any hatchlings. She snorted at her, then lifted her head to the sun. Raven, we did oversleep. We should get started now so we can finish before nightfall and be on our way tomorrow, she said to her Rider, looking down at her.

Raven looked up after her dragon, squinting at the sunlight coming from between the leaves and branches. You're right, but what about these three? I'm not sure what to do with them. Should we make them leave? she asked, gesturing at Sarai, Gornath, and Anthor. Their conversation was shielded from the others, she could only imagine what they thought the two were saying about them.

"Yes, they are destined to do so, but if you have the power why not make life easier." said the rider sarcasticly to the rideress. She had a lot to learn as far as respect. Then he looked at the slightly older dragoness and said, "Since when has Galbatorix or any of his minions cared about the life any of the others. They willingly sacrifice their footsoldiers, and it would have been easy to tell if it were one of Galbatorix's dragons or more powerful minions." said the rider to the dragon. Then he asked the rideress saying, "Why do you so foolishly alienate yourself from me by your attitude and words." said the rider in a matter-of-fact way. He sighed and said, "If you ever wish to see Galbatorix fall we must all help. Yes, the death-blow must be Eragon's but do you really believe he will even get close without the intervention of others? We all have a massive part to play and we cannot win unless we are unified, so think before you insult someone who may be able to help, and even teach you of the riders ways." said the rider disdainfully.

Gornath hummed in agreement with Anthor's statement.

Sarai snorted softly and smiled wolfishly at Oceanus. Wasn't exactly a choice that I was given. And I'm not brave. I just do what needs to be done when it needs to be. And occasionally kick a few butts. Or tails. she said, grinning widely at a memory. She sat on her haunches and glowered at Anthor and Gornath, her gaze penetrating them because of her blindness. Now, are we going to sit around like a bunch of drunk dwarves, or are we going to help Raven and Oceanus with their project so we can move on to the next spot? she asked pointedly, her tail tip twitching. Finesse was not her strong point. She was blunt with her words, unless she knew that someone was hurting somehow and then she gentled them. She might not seem like it a lot of the time, but her personality was very empathic to other people. She tilted her head at Anthor when he spoke. I can't exactly blame her for being a bit put off with you. You probably scared the bajeebers out of her when you came through the trees like you did, makin' her think she was going to have to fight an old and powerful dragon and Rider of the Empire. I certainly would have been. she said with a snort. But unlike before, her eyes glittered with humor at the male Rider. She turned her gaze to Raven, her expression suddenly eager. She got to her paws and shuffled her wings. So, how can we help? I'll do anything you want me to. If you need something lifted or torn down I can help with that as well. I'm much stronger than I look. she chirped excitedly, her eyes nearly glowing with her willingness to help in some way.

Post Re: Safe Haven
"I say again: Because that is Eragon and Saphira's destiny. I would love nothing more than to be able to help them, but for some reason the fates have decreed that he can't know there are hundreds of dragons and Riders roaming around, other than his brother and Thorn," she said, gritting her teeth. More than once Oceanis had had to talk her out of flying to the Varden camp when Eragon and Saphira were present to reveal themselves.

"Nasuada and the other Varden don't even know about Oceanis, even though we serve them. They're under the impression that I am one of the elves most powerful spellcasters. That's why I'm out here building these safehouses alone, because they think I'm doing it as quickly as possible with magic," she said bitterly. She hated the need for the deception. Even Galbatorix knew the truth of her, though their allies did not.

She placed her left hand in front of her face and spoke a lengthy spell in the Ancient Language, one that would make her face revert to it's natural appearance. When she was done, her cheekbones and jawline were more angled and her eyes were slightly turned up at the corners, though not quite as upswept as a full-blooded elf. "As you can see, it's not a hard deception for me to pass off," she said, gesturing at her features and running the tip of her finger over the unnatural shape of her ear. She was so used to hiding who she was that rounded ears were more natural to her than the slight points she had been born with.

"What you so foolishly do not realize is that there is only so much we can do from the shadows, and that we are doing it. No doubt there will come a day where we will have to show ourselves to him and accept him as our leader, even though he and Saphira are younger than ourselves, but we will do it. But it is not yet that time," she concluded. She glanced down at Sarai, she could hear the dragoness's bubbling thoughts in Oceanis's mind.

I don't mind her helping if you don't, but these other two irk me. But again, if you want to let them help, I won't fight them. Besides, Gornath may be exactly what we need to bring in all those heavy trees for the roof, Raven said to her, once again blocking the comment from the others.

Oceanis smiled at her Rider's words, even one's so old as these two would have to see the wisdom in them. If Eragon and Saphira were supposed to know about the Riders and dragons secretly supporting them, then they would have long ago. And since they did not, Oceanis agreed with her Rider that they were not supposed to. Yet.

Don't bother telling her who she should or should not insult. I've been trying for seven years and it still hasn't sank in yet. Although it would seem you would do well to follow your own advice. Your words since we have met you have had a mocking edge to them. Questioning her power, her motives... You can see why this would rankle her, even if she was already not a morning person, Oceanis said to the male Rider, turning fully to face him for the first time. She dipped her head until it was directly in front of him and stared at him with a big, blue eye.

I have no problems with her helping, and I was hoping you'd say that, she said to Raven, continuing their private conversation as a gentle hum reverbrated in her chest. Sarai, you may help us if that is what you truly wish to do. What about the two of you? the cerulean said, drawing her head back and curving her neck around Raven.

OOC: You know what is really cool, in one of my first RPGs Into the Deep, Gornath and Anthor became leaders of 2 tribes of dragons, and they settled on the islands, all but Vroengard and now I wont have to edit that at all since Eragon never went to any of the others lol, that is so cool. Also, I suppose its time to become friends, Anthor and Gornath have been the "high and mighty old guys enough for this story especially since Anthor and Raven will end up in a fight to the death while Gornath helps Oceanus to learn about the dragons of old lolz.

IC:
Anthor looked at the half elf, half human and said, "So that is why you were able to cast the spel very interesting. If you do not ming who were your parents, for though the elves and dwarves know of our presence, the Varden think I am someone much like Brom. I don't say much to then or around them. The few who really know who I am have sworn in the Ancient Language not to reveal who I actually am. Also, I would like to help you. This place is large enough to hide a dragon, or even a small group, and it would assist the dragon tribes of the islands to be able to seek safe haven here on their way to the Beors." said the rider to the human/elf and her dragon.

Gornath growled and said, It is possible that some of the green dragons could be sent here to help protect the safehouse, also I can lend my strength to place wards around the forest and the buildings as well as move those things which need it. said the white dragon.

Sarai nodded her head eagerly and her tail weaved back and forth like a snake a little faster, similar to a dogs but not quite as fast. Yes, I'd love to help. she said, prumming in her chest a bit. The muscles in her shoulders and haunches rolled with power as she sprang forward, clearing the hole in front of her easily. She landed with a soft thud with a few inches to spare from her hindpaws to the opposite edge of the hole. Where would you like me to start? she asked, glancing over her shoulder, her lavender-flecked-with-grey eyes sparkling.

Post Re: Safe Haven
OOC: Lol, my thoughts exactly, that's why I had Oceanis talk to Anthor. :)

Oceanis's chest vibrated as she laughed, amused by Sarai's eagerness. Well, I think Raven was planning on creating some steps with the dirt we removed from the hole yesterday. Think you're up to it? she asked, putting her head down into the hole next to Sarai's. Her eyes flicked from Anthor to Raven when the male Rider asked about the girl's parents. She hummed again, arcing her neck so that she was looking at Raven out of one eye. The girl looked at her briefly, yellow-hazel eyes sad, then lifted her hand in front of her face again and spoke the spell to alter her features.

I think I will take Gornath to pick up those heavy timbers we were going to use here, she said to Raven, flicking her tongue and catching her on the shoulder.

Raven nodded and looked at Anthor. "Do you mind if Gornath goes with her? She's going to get some heavy lumber. We planned on using it for a house-type structure, but it will work just as well as a roof here," she said. "Oceanis has already said she would like for the two of you to help, so I have no objections," she said, making a mental note to ask about the 'island dragons' they had spoken of later.

She looked at the ground as Oceanis walked off, thinking about how to answer his questions. After a moment she looked up again, a pensive look on her now human features. "I'm curious, were there many half-bloods when the Riders were strong? You made it sound as if there weren't, asking about my strength like that. And you wouldn't know my mother, but my father was Thialani, Rider of the blue Gerandor," she said, watching Anthor's face closely, to see if he recognized the names. She slipped Kveykva from it's sheath and showed it to him. "This was my father's blade," she added.

Thank you for offering your strength Gornath, but Raven is only going to place two wards on this place. The first to ensure that only those who are not loyal to Galbatorix or those forced to serve him can see the entrance to the dugout, and the second to protect those resting here from misfortune. The spells will draw their strength from the trees, and will only be activated if someone enters the grove, Oceanis said over her shoulder, picking her way daintily along the hidden path.

Anthor nodded and said, "I don't mind if he doesn't." Then the rider said to Raven, "They were not extrordinarily rare, but they were not extremely common either." said the rider as he thought back to his days as a young rider on Vroengard. Most of the time, the elves stayed with the elves, and the humans with the humans as is the nature of things. And, you must also remember I am not much older than Galbatorix. I was less than a year ahead of him in my training, so I do not truly remember the golden age of the riders." said Anthor.

Gornath growled and leapt into the air, his powerful and large wings catching the air and forcing the dragon higher into the sky. He asked, Where is this lumber I must move? asked the dragon.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Sarai nodded her head and moved toward the pile of dirt. Using her wings, she cupped them and took two big scoops of dirt, the membrane in her wings relaxing a bit to compensate for the added amount of weight. Then she carefully padded over to the hole and dumped both scoops of dirt down. She went back to the pile and picked up two more scoops and dumped them. She used her tail to push the dirt into a more compact pile, then she padded it down with her wing. It would take a while to finish, but with the help of Anthor and Raven it would go swiftly. She crouched and sprang straight up out of the hole, then spread her wings and beat them once to stay aloft, then again to move forward and land lightly on the ground. She shook to loosen the dirt from her scales, flicking her tail. She grinned wolfishly at Anthor and Raven, her eyes twinkling. It matters not what you are, but what you do. I don't see a half-breed, I see a woman that is trying to do her best with what she was given and help others wherever she can. she said, and huffed gently. Now, are you two going to stand around talking all day or are you planning on helping me? she teased, her eyes sparkling with humor as she grinned at them both.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven nodded her thanks to Gornath as the white dragon leaped into the air, crashing through the slender branches overhead. She winced as a few of the concealing branches and leaves fell to the ground, but it wasn't enough to reveal the hidden structure within. "Just follow Oceanis, she'll take you to it," she yelled, pointing to where the cerulean had disappeared among the trees.

"Really? Hunh. I would have figured that with them all being Riders, they would have gotten along," she said to Anthor, turning her attention back to the other Rider. She shrugged and sheathed Kveykva, turning to grin at Sarai as the black-gold hatchling leaped out of the hole where she had been molding the dirt. "It's alright Sarai, I don't mind being called a half-blood. It's the truth about what and who I am after all. Why should I let that bother me? But it's sweet of you to say those things," Raven said with a smile, reaching out and scratching the underside of the hatchling's jaw, just like she did Oceanis.

"I wonder if it wouldn't be easier and less time-consuming to mold the earth into steps using magic? After all, we have things to do before the dragons get back with the lumber. What do you think, Anthor?" she said, tracing the rune on her dragon egg fragment necklace pensively.

Oceanis listened to the talk behind her, a smug smile on her face. Now that Raven was thinking clearly, she had warmed up reasonably well to the white dragon and his Rider. The cerulean emerged from the last of the trees and ran down the slight incline before leaping into the sky, flapping her wings powerfully at the height of her jump. She gained height quickly, looping and twirling around Gornath before leveling off and heading towards a nearby river.

This way Gornath. We had them float the wood down the river so I wouldn't have to carry so much for so long, she called, heading towards a dark mass beside the banks. She was moving at a fair clip, but it was still almost an hour before she reached the bank and the mound of wood.

"They did. My teacher was an elf. We all got along great, but most of the time, elves chose to mate with elves, and humans with humans although I had and have many friends who chose differently, so it is not an insult. Also one might notice, that most of the older riders did not have a wife, or a mate. I chose to spend my life in study and have dedicated myself to my work." said the rider as he began to think of the correct words of a spell to do the work they need. When he thought of the spell, he used the words in the Ancient language and the dirt began to shift into the desired positions. Then, Anthor looked at Raven and said, "When ever you are ready?" jokingly.

Gornath followed the cerulan dragoness to the logs and used his powerful foreclaws to grasp one and with great effort began to pick it up. The logs were large, but they were not beyond his strength to carry.

Sarai snorted softly and prummed, tilting her head into the scratch and half-lidding her eyes with content. Of course. she chirped, her eyes sparkling as she opened them fully. She hummed deep in her chest and watched Anthor and Raven speak of spells. She shivered as she felt the cold chill of magic being used, and sensed the steps being formed as if of their own violation. She took a few steps away from the hole, eying it a bit warily now. She didn't like magic, really just because she couldn't see it, at all, until it was too late to react. In some instances, when she had fought a Rider of the Empire, he had shot fire at her. She had only been able to dodge it since she had felt it being formed, because it had been in physical contact with the Rider at the time of formation. If she hadn't, she would have had a bad scar on the left side of her body. Otherwise, in any other situation, she was completely blind to magical attacks. She huffed at the thought and shifted uneasily, eager for the magic to finish its work.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven blushed slightly at Anthor's explanation, and hurriedly turned to the dugout, the Ancient Language forming on her lips as she hid her embarrassment in working magic. When she was ready, she released the energy, seeing the shape of the steps in her minds eye. The mounds of dirt flowed into the hole and formed shallow, low steps. She had to remind herself that it would be humans using them, so they couldn't be as steep as the one's she was used to among the elves.

It didn't take long before the steps were completed. The Rider nodded her thanks to Anthor, then looked at Sarai. The little dragoness seemed uneasy. "Sarai, are you alright?" Raven asked, looking at her in concern. She looked at Anthor and gestured at the top edge of the dugout. "Will you create a ledge, maybe eight inches wide, around the top of the hole? They'll help secure the roof without the aid of so many thick, cumbersome log supports," Raven asked him. She mouthed a quick spell, showing him what she meant. The cut in the earth went about a foot down into the ground, and eight inches back from the inside walls of the dugout. "We'll cover the timbers with the dirt, the better to conceal them," she said quickly.

"Sarai, come over here," she said, laying a light hand on one of her neck spikes and tugging gently. Raven walked over to a tree a fair distance from the worksite and leaned against it's trunk. "There, do you feel better?" she asked, peering closely at the black-gold, her hazel eyes keenly taking in every detail of the hatchling's appearance.

Oceanis hefted four of the timbers, two in each forepaw, then flapped her wings, testing the weight. This is good, I can carry this much, she said, looking at the older white. We don't have to bring it all at once, so don't strain yourself too much, she said, then leaped into the air. She jauntily circled around him once, then turned and headed back to their Riders. She flew low to the ground, her jaw slightly clenched at the extra strain of the unaccustomed weight. I've carried boulders bigger than this, this is nothing! she snarled to herself, all the while berating herself for trying to show the older dragon up. She didn't know what made her do it, she had already decided they were friends after all.

Anthor looked at the job ahead of him, and then drew energy from some of the many trees around him and used their energy to aide him in the spell, and soon the trench was dug.

Gornath growled at Oceanus with a slight draconic smile on his face. He said, Well then good, you can come back and finish carrying these logs while I go to hunt for myself something to eat. said the white dragon humoriously as he saw the young dragoness attempting to impress him with her strength. Then the white said, You will regret carrying so much at one time. Remember who you are. You must be prepaired to fight at any time, we are in the Empire. If you use up too much energy carrying too much weight at one time, you leave yourself and your rider vulnerable. said the white as he winged his way back toward the forest.

Sarai snorted gently at Raven's question and nodded, just as they both did more magic wielding. Her upper lip peeled back with dislike to show her teeth, but otherwise she didn't make a sound. She lowered her lip down once Raven touched her neck and tugged her over to the far side of the clearing, far enough away from the magic that it felt only like a cool breeze brushing down her spine. She blinked several times and shook her head from side to side, as if clearing a cloud of flies. Yeah, thanks. Magic makes me uneasy because I can't sense it with my powers. I can feel magic, but it feels like a chilly wind sliding down my spine. she explaining, eying Anthor warily over her shoulder. You've probably noticed that I'm blind, right? Well, so long as at least one of my feet is touching the ground, I can still see around me. It's...similar to a bat, or dolphin, I think, except I don't send out any noises or anything like that. I can see the truth in my surroundings, unless it is in the air. That is my power. she said, the tip of her tail twitching a bit.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven nodded when Sarai told her she was blind, she had suspected as much of course. Her eyes narrowed in curiosity when she spoke of the power to see the truth of the world around her. "So you mean that what you do is similar to a bat or dolphin feeling their way around with the sound waves they throw off. Interesting," she said, eyeing the little dragoness. It struck Raven that it would be very hard to hide from Sarai, unless she was in the air with Oceanis or very far away.

"What about water? Does that affect your power?" she asked, scratching under the scales where her neck joined her shoulders. She looked up just as Anthor finished what he was doing and cocked an eyebrow at him. She hadn't expected him to finish so soon.

Oceanis chuckled at Gornath's words. Perhaps, but the issue is maybe a bit more troublesome than simply leaving myself vulnerable out of competitiveness. I used to be able to lift this much without any problems. It would seem that in all our coming and going, I have neglected to keep my muscles in shape, the cerulean said to the older dragon. She tightened her grip on the logs and increased the beat of her wings so that she was going faster and gaining height.

She was soon on a level with the white and looked at him out of one glittering blue eye. She snorted a bit of fire at him, then surged ahead. If she was going to turn the work into a chance to exercise, she was going to have fun with it. She was rapidly approaching the trees ahead, and reached out with her mind to Raven. We are almost back, do you want us to drop the logs through the top of the clearing, or outside the trees?

Outside if you don't mind, I don't want to knock anymore of the branches loose, Raven replied, bounding up a nearby tree so she could see them approach. "Hey Anthor!" she called, waving at him, "They're almost here, let's go meet them."

She watched the two specks of light, one blue and one white, flying through the sky for a moment, then lightly leaped through the branches back to earth. She rolled across the ground instead of landing on her feet to lessen the impact so as not to cause Sarai discomfort, then sprang to her feet and trotted leisurely through the trees. She had just reached the edge of the trees when Oceanis's back claws touched the ground.

Anthor nodded to the human/elf mix and waked after her. He was not in a great hurry. He knew that there would be more logs and that moving the logs would be a slow process since the energy it took would wear him down quickly and he could not take too much from the trees because they needed to be healthy to keep the safe houses safe.

Gornath smiled at the dragoness, then shot away. He was one of the fastest if not the fastest dragon alive. His massive wings propelled him through the air at a great velocity. There were few dragons, not even Shyara or Phalynx who could even compete with him when it came to speed flight. He could not outdo the others in flying high, or diving, but flying straight, he was head and shoulders above mot competition.

Sarai snorted softly. Yeah, similar to that. she said. She shook, unfurling her wings briefly before settling them at her sides once more. She tilted her head and snorted again. I don't know. I've never tried that before. she said, half closing her eyes as the human-elf scratched her neck where it joined to her shoulders. She looked up when Raven spoke up about the dragons. Her eyes brightened and she grinned wolfishly at both twolegs, snorting quietly. She followed after Raven with her tail swishing back and forth, grinning when she landed on the ground and rolled, probably to soften the impact of her landing. Don't worry about that. I could feel you in the trees and knew you were coming down. she said, chuckling deep in her chest.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven stumbled and looked at Sarai in surprise. Well there goes my theory of hiding in the trees when she's nearby, she thought to herself with a chuckle. She looked at Oceanis just as the dragoness laid the two logs before her, grunting from exertion. What's the matter? Raven asked her, alarmed at how tired she looked.

Nothing, other than I've been neglecting my training, the cerulean replied, looking sheepish. She shuffled her wings for a moment, then lightly licked Raven on the forearm before leaping back into the air. She circled a few times, then arced off to go pick up some more timber.

Raven picked out the memory of Oceanis's conversation with Gornath from her partner's mind. She frowned when the memory was finished. Oceanis was right, she had been neglecting her training. She wasn't the only one either; it had been so long since Raven had faced a proper opponent, she wasn't sure how she and Kveykva would do. She sighed in resignation; there wasn't anything she could do about it now. She needed her strength for her current mission.

The female Rider walked forward and stuck her left palm on the side of one of the logs, close to the end. With a brief word in the Ancient Language, she bored a hole through the log, then looped a length of rope through the hole. Turning to the other log, she did the same. "Well, I'll start dragging this one to where we need it. You can wait here for Gornath if you want," she said to Anthor, smiling at him in a friendly way. Then she leaned forward, threw her weight on the end of the rope, and started dragging the log. With her elvish strength it wasn't that heavy, but it was enough of a burden to cause a light sheen of sweat to pop up on her face.

Short, not much for her to say or do yet...

Post Re: Safe Haven
It took Raven only a few minutes to drag the log through the clearing and drop it beside the hole they were constructing. "I don't have enough leather for that, but I might have a few lengths of rope that might do. It won't be much of a harness though," she said to Sarai, walking over to Oceanis's saddle. She rummaged in the saddlebags for a moment, then drew out two long bits of cotton rope. With quick, deft twists of her wrists, she made slip knots in the rope, then tied them together. The Rider cocked her head and surveyed her handiwork for a moment, then shook her head and undid it.

"How's this?" she said after a few minutes deliberation. She had retained the slip knots, but instead of twisting them together for a harness, she simply slipped them over a few of the spikes close to the base of the black-gold's tail and tightened them. "They shouldn't slip, but you might have to lay your tail on top of the log to keep from accidentally crushing the tip under the log," she said.

She saw Anthor watching them curiously from beside the log he had pulled into the clearing, and waited for him to say something, but he simply turned and walked back to the tree line. How much do you two lack? she asked Oceanis, sensing the cerulean was about to drop off her second load.

Not much. Gornath is a big help. We should have the last few logs here by the time you get this pile into the clearing, she replied, swooping low and neatly dropping her burden before arcing back into the sky, her paws never touching the ground.

"We'd better hurry, they're showing us up!" she said to Sarai, grinning. She quickly untied the rope from her log, then jogged back through the trees. On the way, she passed Anthor, who was already tugging his second log back to camp. Within a minute, she had reached the pile, bored a hole through a log, tied the rope through it, and was waiting for Sarai with another so she could tie it in place for the dragoness.

Sarai watched Raven curiously, blinking. She looked over her shoulder at the loops that were tied to her spikes at the base of her tail. She tilted her head and waved her tail from side to side, snorting lightly with satisfaction. She grinned up at Oceanis as the dragoness swooped down and dropped her load, then wheeled about to get more. The black-gold dragoness brightened and charged forward after Raven, eager to help. She trotted up to the log and stood in front of it, lifting her tail and resting it on the end as the rideress had suggested. She glanced back at Raven and grinned wolfishly. Load me up, let's show them what we've got! she said excitedly, her eyes glittering.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven laughed at the wolfish expression on Sarai's face, her fingers flying across the ropes attached to her tail. In a flash, she had the log secured and was diving for her own rope. "Got it! Let's go!" she yelled, grinning. She threw her shoulder into the rope and heaved, the log moving quickly and easily in her excitement. The dull boom from Oceanis's wings continued to fade as she made her way back to the river. Just as Raven reached the treeline, Gornath dove down and landed neatly, dropping his logs before he jumped back into the sky.

"We're still going to beat you!" she yelled, shaking a fist at him playfully.

She put her shoulder back into the rope, then focused on the ground in front of her, pulling the log as quickly as she could without hurting herself. Within minutes she was passing Anthor, on his way to get yet another log, then dropping her log and charging back for another one. The exercise was making her feel wide awake and ready to fight a dragon, the sweat pouring down her face a minor nuisance. As she passed the tree with her saddle under it, she quickly undid her swordbelt and tossed it on top. After all, I'm more than able to defend myself with magic and my fists, she thought, allowing Oceanis to hear the thought. She had sensed the dragoness's unease with her action as she approached from the river.

Maybe so, but you are not the only one capable of casting strong wards against magic and physical hurts, little one, Oceanis said in a cautionary tone. She was a mile away from the drop spot for the logs, Gornath close behind her. She carried the last of the logs in her claws. She uttered a coughing laugh when Raven sped up, sensing the approach of her demise. Face it, I beat you, she said teasingly.

Not until your claws touch the ground! Raven growled back playfully.

Sarai waited until she knew the ties were secure to heave her weight forward. With her odd strength that she had inherited from her father, it was easy enough to haul the log to the drop-off site. She clipped the tip of her tail a few times but ignored the pain. She pulled in parallel with the other logs and twisted around to the tie that attached her tail to the log. She slashed the ropes as close to the log as she could to keep as much rope as possible. Once she was free she turned and bolted after Raven, squealing with eagerness.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Oceanis circled the clearing, bugling her laughter to the skies as she descended to earth. Now will you accept defeat? she asked, touching down lightly. She neatly stacked the logs on the pile she and Gornath had created. The old white dragon landed close beside her, snorting with amusement at the antics of the younger generation.

Raven skidded to a stop, panting heavily. "Fine, you win. But wait til next time!" she laughed, giving her dragon a mock-bow. The Rider straightened, arcing her back to stretch the muscles. She untied the ropes from her current log, then wound them around her shoulder as she walked back for another. Now that the race was over, she walked slowly, not in as big a hurry. How do your wings muscles feel now? she asked smugly, walking passed the boundary of the trees. She heard something thundering along behind her and jumped out of the way, allowing Sarai to pass her.

"Sarai, the race is over, they beat us!" she called mournfully, rolling upright from where she had thrown herself. She walked over to a log and bored a hole, then tied her rope through it. "Here, stop looking so smug and help out!" she yelled at her dragon, smiling happily.

Oceanis snorted and picked the log up in her jaws, the bark splitting around her razor-sharp teeth. They're sore, but nothing that can't be fixed with a little rest and a lot of conditioning, she said, walking back through the trees.

That's good, we could both use a little conditioning, Raven said back, tying off Sarai's rope for her. "What about you two, you've both gone awfully quiet," she called to Anthor and Gornath, the Rider just smiled and shrugged his shoulders, steadily pulling his log along. She grinned and grabbed her own, tugging on the rope she'd had to snag back from Oceanis as the dragoness disappeared into the trees.

Just before she entered the treeline, a small black dot in the sky caught her attention. She stopped to look, and a grin spread across her face. "Well would you look at that, Shrel is back, finally! I was wondering if he hadn't took up with some lady-hawk on his way back with Nasuada's answer to our report," she called, showing Oceanis and the others a picture of their feathered friend.

OOC: I hope Sarai doesn't get too annoyed, I decided to make it the end of the war, so they can go ahead and skip to the cliffs. :) That's the message Shrel is bringing.

Sarai grinned wolfishly at Raven as she tied off the rope to the new log. Once the Rideress had finished she threw her weight into the harness on her tail and dragged the log toward the site. She paused in her labor and looked up at where she saw Raven, tilting her head curiously to the side. She listened hard, but couldn't make out the wingbeats of the little-feathered-hawk-bird. Although that was another weakness of hers; her hearing was weaker than other kin of her race. She grinned and heaved against the log once more to continue on to the site. After a few more minutes she stopped and cut the rope with one of her talons, then paused and looked back for Raven and grinned wolfishly again.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven turned away from the distant black dot that was Shrel and walked into the clearing, dodging out of the way when Oceanis set her log down almost on top of the Rider's foot. "Careful now you big gallumph! I need that foot!" she said with a mock-growl. The hazel-eyed Rider looked around at their work, nodding in satisfaction. "That's enough for now, we should take a break while we wait for my messenger," she said as she walked to Oceanis's saddle.

After a few seconds of rummaging through the saddle bags, she pulled out a full waterskin. It was spelled so the water was always pure and clean, as well as cold. She took a long draught then tossed it to Anthor. He took two gulps, then tossed it back to her. "Thrysta deloi," she murmured, catching the waterskin without looking up. Her left palm glowed with silver light as the ground in front of her shimmered and rippled like a sunlit lake. A patch of ground five feet across parted sideways and deepened, revealing the moist earth below.

"Adurna reisa," she commanded, crouching down beside the watering hole. When it was full she motioned to the three dragons. "If you want a drink, here it is," she said.

Oceanis knew the limits of her Rider's strength, so felt no qualms about turning her head and taking three long gulps of the cool water she had pulled forth. She'll be alright, drink as much as you'd like, she said to Sarai and Gornath. The white dragon looked at her hesitantly for a moment, then nodded and took a drink. The cerulean dragoness reared up and craned her neck as much as she could, trying to see over the trees. Her eye just barely cleared the treeline as she swayed, trying to avoid damaging any of the foliage.

She immediately spotted the dot that had caught Raven's attention a few minutes ago. Going from how he normally flies, Shrel should be here in about ten minutes, she said, slowly lowering herself back to all fours.

"That's what I was thinking. I wonder what news he's bringing us. He's certainly not coming from the direction I expected," Raven replied, drawing up more water to replenish what Gornath and Oceanis had drank.

Sarai yawned a bit, tired from using her muscles, though it was actually the first time she had done such a thing, at least, using it for brute strength like this. Usually she used it while fighting to gain the upper hand. She looked over when Raven made the pool of water and opened her mouth, realizing her tongue was rather dry. She trotted over and leaned down, submerging the tip of her muzzle in the cool liquid. She didn't drink nearly as much as the adult dragons, but she did drink enough to easilt stuff a small horse. She sat back and licked her scales clean of dirt, then looked up at Raven once more when she, then at Oceanus. She tilted her head. From the way the ocean blue dragoness had been checking, the hawk Shrel was coming from...She sat up straight and looked directly at Raven. I think I know where he's coming from. But I won't say in case I'm wrong.... she trailed off, straining her ears for the first signs of Shrel's wingbeats.

Post Re: Safe Haven
"I already know where he's most likely coming from, I'm not a mapmaker for nothing. I just find it odd that's all," Raven said pensively, pacing under the leafy branches. Every now and then she would look up between the small gaps in the branches to see if she could spot Shrel coming in for a landing, but she saw nothing. Oceanis, when was the last time we had contact with the Varden? she asked her partner, still pacing.

Many days ago, how long exactly, I'm not sure. We weren't to contact them once we got started, on the off chance someone discovered where the safehouses are through our discussions and told Galbatorix, Oceanis replied, her eyes flicking to and fro as she watched her Rider's progress. After a moment she reached out with her left forepaw and snagged the anxious Rider to her side. Calm yourself, friend of my hearts, all must be well, or Shrel would be flying with more haste, she said quietly, rubbing her muzzle against Raven's side.

She looked up at the sky, her cat-like pupils contracting as she gazed at the bright sky. After a moment she released Raven and stood, cocking her head to the wind. I think I hear something, it could be the wind rustling his feathers. He's almost here, she said, shaking herself to get the dirt off her scales. The cerulean dragoness was surprised to find herself quivering with excitement, she could sense something about to change, possibly forever.

Raven stood with her dragon and placed her hand on her shoulder, which she could only reach because Oceanis was crouched as if to take off, her foreclaws grinding the dirt before her into dust. The Rider frowned, she had never seen her dragon this agitated. A loud falcon's cry from above punctuated Oceanis's words. Raven's head snapped around and she pierced the sky with her eyes, hunting for her friend. Within seconds she had spotted him, darting into the trees and careening around trunks until he was in the clearing with them.

"There you are! Do you know how anxious we've been?" she called, throwing up her left arm. Both the sleeves on her shirt were padded with leather so he could safely perch on her forearms and shoulders, but she had found her preferred her left arm as his perch for some reason. The falcon landed neatly, fluffing up his chest feathers and preening them shyly. His brilliant yellow eyes raked Sarai and the other Dragon Rider pair, but all he did was click his right talons against her arm, drawing her attention to a scroll tied there.

"Ah, the debriefing, wonderful," she said, retrieving small leather pouch with her missive inside. As soon as his leg was free, Shrel hopped to her shoulder, and from there flew to a branch a short distance away. Raven ignored the movement and hurriedly unfolded the parchment. She read for a moment, then reread the message.

Her eyes narrowed and she mumbled a spell in the Ancient Language. Light flared across the paper and an image of the Varden's crest hovered in the air with the runes for Nasuada's name superimposed over it. "Well... It's authentic," she said, looking at Oceanis with awe on her face.

Yes... It certainly is, Oceanis said after a moment, her voice as hushed as her Rider's. She arced her neck until she could see the note for herself. She had acquired some skill for reading the languages of the two-legs from being bonded with Raven, therefore she could easily understand what was written, even if her heart could scarcely believe it.

After a moment the words from Nasuada sank in, and she looked cautiously at Sarai. I will tell her, he is her father afer all, she said privately to Raven. Her Rider nodded mentally and turned to Anthor, handing him the message.

Oceanis looked at Sarai, then gently reached out to her mind. Sarai, the war, it is over. Galbatorix is dead... As is Shruikan, she said, watching the little black-gold. Her heart panged with sympathy for the little hatchling. As twisted as he was, the black dragon was still her father, she must still have felt something for him, which would probably make this hard on her. Are you okay? she asked after a minute.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Sarai remained silent afterward, watching Raven pace back and forth with a patient gaze. It took what seemed forever, but finally the little falcon made it. She returned his scrutiny, nodding her head in respect to him. She respected all birds of prey, the hunters of the sky, for their skill and prowess. She watched Raven carefully, her brow furrowing as the rideress got an expression of awe and astonishment on her face. She shivered as the female did something with magic, the coolness of the arcane arts sliding over her scales like a chilling breeze. She shifted, standing on all four paws, when Oceanus move and arced her neck, most likely to read the note herself. It was silent for a moment, then the black-gold felt the touch of the dragoness's mind. Sarai tilted her head and listened without comment as the ocean blue female spoke. She was startled by the news. She lowered her head to the ground, thinking. Surprisingly, her heart ached with sadness and grief. She hadn't loved her father, but neither had she hated him. He had been a victim, cruelly beaten and molded into the foul beast he had become, more monster than dragon, half-mad with anger and resentment. She looked up at Oceanus, and there were unshed tears glittering in her eyes. I had hoped to meet him...I don't think he ever knew I existed. He never knew that he had a daughter, someone that didn't hate him for the things that someone else had made him do.... she trailed off and looked away, her expression saddened. I had hoped to show him what it meant to live...truly live.. she was quiet for a while longer, then shook her head a little. But he is out of his pain now. He is at peace. she said, and she sounded content with this. She looked up at Raven, her expression worried. Unless his Heart is still intact somewhere...? she asked reluctantly. If the Varden got hold of it...that could get ugly fast. No matter how good their intentions maybe, they would still wish to punish him for his crimes, when he had already been punished enough from Galbatorix's madness.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven's gaze flickered from Oceanis to Sarai, watching the little female's reaction as her partner spoke to her. After a moment Sarai looked to her, a worried expression on her scaly face. The Rider frowned at the black-gold's words, suddenly she was worried for the possible existence of Shruikan's Eldunari as well. "Maybe... It would have been the easiest way for Galbatorix to control him... Although, it probably wouldn't have been very big would it? I mean, considering that he stole Shruikan as a hatchling and then forced him to serve him. He would have needed his Heart of Hearts for that. In which case, he would have kept it on his person. From the way he died... If he did, then I'm afraid it wouldn't have mattered if your father had disgorged his Eldunari or not, it would have been destroyed along with Galbatorix," she said, tracing the rune on her dragon egg-shell necklace as she thought.

What do you think Oceanis? she asked the cerulean. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Anthor hold the note up to Gornath for the old dragon to read. After a moment the white lifted his head to the sky and bugled with joy. Raven smiled at the sound. Though she was worried for Sarai, inside she was bursting with joy and excitement for the new world she was now a part of.

I will never understand or be able to predict a madman's ways, but yes, that seems to be the most likely answer. And if, for some reason, it turns out Shruikan's Eldunari does exist, you two seem to have forgotten an important detail: Eragon and Saphira. They know the torment Shruikan has suffered, and if they touched his mind even once during their encounter, they will know the pain he was, or is, in. They won't let any harm come to him for something he was forced to do, more than likely they will try to help him, unless he is beyond helping, the bright blue dragoness said, gently bumping her snout to Sarai's head to comfort the hatchling. Her scales itched to join in with Gornath's cry of relief and exultation, but she felt that Sarai might think they were celebrating the death of her father and restrained herself.

Sarai smiled slightly up at Raven as the twoleg spoke. She nodded in agreement, and she felt content spread through her. She lifted her head to look at Oceanus as the blue dragoness spoke, and she had to consent that the female was right. Eragon and Saphira were honorable, if they found Shruikan's Heart they would treat him with the respect he was long due for his predicament. She smiled warmly at Gornath as he roared with joy. She nudges Oceanus back gently and waved her tail from side to side. Don't worry about me, I'm happy his suffering is over. It is a good reason to celebrate. His tormenting, and the tormentor of Alagaesia, is dead, and he is no longer in pain. she said, and smiled happily. She sat back on her haunches and raised her head to bugle with joy, spreading her wings wide for balance.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Oceanis prummed at the little black-gold, respect for the young one's wise thoughts reverberating with her voice. Yes, at least his suffering is over, she thought to herself.

Raven smiled at Sarai, then a thought struck her that made her groan with annoyance. "Shrel! You couldn't have brought this note this morning before we went nuts dragging all these logs to the clearing?" she asked with mock anger. She shook her head and looked at Oceanis. "Oh well, I guess this means we can get on with our little project all the sooner," she said happily, gathering up their stuff.

"As much as I'd like to stay here with all of you, there's something I need to prepare before all of those eggs Eragon and Saphira found start hatching. You're welcome to come, but we must leave quickly. That letter Shrel brought is at best a week old, so there's no telling how much time I have to get it all ready," she said to their little group, buckling on Oceanis's saddle as she spoke.

Sarai smiled at Raven's mock anger, but she went utterly still at the mention of Eragon, Saphira, and eggs. She blinked a few times. Whoa wait....what eggs. You mean...you mean we're not alone..? she murmured, her eyes wide with pleasant surprise and delight.

Raven stopped at the tone of Sarai's voice and slid around on Oceanis's side, her hand resting on the cerulean's shoulder. "Yes Sarai, eggs. Hundreds of them. The dragons are no longer in danger of passing into memory. They will thrive again," she said with a smile, her voice full of happiness and a determination to protect the new generation of dragons, at all costs. She turned back to Oceanis's saddle and continued to buckle it. "I'll say it again, you all are welcome to join us," she said again before nimbly leaping onto the peak of her partner's shoulders.

She sat there a moment, looking at her new friends, an ecstatic grin spreading across her face as she considered what she was on her way to do. Feeling she could no longer keep it to herself, and that she no longer had to, she spoke. "What we are going to do is return to an old Rider outpost Oceanis and I discovered in the Spine. No, we're not talking about Ristvak'baen. It was a training ground for young Riders, before they were taken on by the elders who would be their masters. We're going to clean it out and up to make it liveable again. Then when the new Riders start to arrive, it will be ready for use to train them as in olden days," she explained, talking fast, eager to be on her way.

She saw Anthor and Gornath shift restlessly, interested looks on their faces. It occured to her that they might know the exact place she was talking about.

I would like it if you joined us. The last time we were there, it was dark and dank, and I smelled something that reeked of danger. Your ability to sense things moving over the ground will be useful in routing what ever it is, Oceanis said to Sarai, craning her head over to the black-gold hatchling.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Sarai was both stunned and delighted by this news. Her eyes lit up with joy and sparkled madly. That is good. Very good. she said, her tail weaving back and forth. She tilted her head to the side as Raven explained what she and Oceanus were heading off to do, and pondered the offer to come. She wanted to come and help of course, she loved helping her friends, though her mother was probably starting to worry about her. At that thought her tail twitched and she snorted softly. She was old enough to take care of herself. Her mother survived for two weeks on her own, at the base of Helgrind no less. She could handle herself for a few days. She smiled at the blue dragoness and nodded her head eagerly. Of course I'll come. she said, her eyes sparkling with mischief. She huffed lightly and tilted her head once more. Would you mind though if I sat on your back with Raven? I can fly if I have to, but I hate not seeing where I'm going. I have no idea how my uncle does it all the time like he does. she snorted sheepishly.

Not at all little one. My back is plenty big enough to carry both you and Raven. Hurry though and climb up, she is eager to be on the way, Oceanis said, smiling. She stretched out her left foreleg and crouched down, creating a sort of ramp that the black-gold hatchling could climb up.

Raven smiled, glad that at least one of their new friends was accompanying them. "What about you two? Are y'all going to come with us?" she asked, turning to look at Anthor and Gornath.

"We would be honored to have a hand in this process," Anthor said, bowing slightly. He turned and climbed up Gornath's leg, settling comfortably in the saddle at the peak of his shoulders.

Post Re: Safe Haven
"Then let us be off," Raven said, buckling the last strap on the saddle before climbing up and settling in her seat before Sarai. Slipping her legs in the rows of leather straps designed to hold her down, she tightened them around her calves and then tapped Oceanis's mind with her own so she would know she was ready. The cerulean dragon lifted her sparkling wings to the sky, then leaped upwards, crashing through the tree branches before emerging into clear day.

Raven looked up from the crook of her arm where she had ducked to protect her face from the deluge of thin twigs. She leaned over Oceanis's shoulder and watched the ground drop away below them. When they were just over a hundred feet in the air, a massive white shape smashed an even bigger hole in the treetops than Oceanis had created, and circled swiftly up to join them.

I can certainly see where that would be disconcerting, Oceanis said to Sarai, pondering in the back of her mind where she would be now if she had hatched blind like the brave little hatchling she was now carrying on her back. The cerulean dragoness aligned herself in a northwesterly direction and glided upward on a hot thermal, barely flapping her wings to stay airborne.

Do either of you know any of our kind that might like to join us on this mission of ours? I would think it is important to all of us, bonded or not, she asked Gornath and Sarai.

Sarai nodded and blinked her eyes, clenching her claws carefully under Oceanus's scales and shifting her weight to keep her balance on the blue's back. She tilted her head at the question, snorting softly as she thought. My mother, of course. Hmm...possibly Felecia. She needs to get out more. Maybe Jessa...and my cousins, Sofranir and Tel'aeír, they'd love to explore too. she quipped, smiling brightly at the idea of seeing her cousins.

Alright then, that sounds like a fairly big crowd. Do you have a way to get in touch with all of them? Raven asked silently, so she wouldn't have to shout over the roar of the wind as they flew. She conveyed the impression to the others of their group that she didn't know where any of her own comrades were at the moment, so could not contact them to bring them along.

It does, doesn't it? Oceanis said, humming happily. Her eyes sparkled even more than normal, as they did whenever she anticipated a meeting with more of her kind. She felt Raven slip a hand under one of her scales and start scratching, purring at the pleasant sensation.

Like Raven, I'm not sure of the whereabouts of most of my comrades, so it will be just the two of us I'm afraid, unless someone contacts us first, Anthor replied silently.

Sarai snorted softly. I can contact my cousins and Felecia, but anyone else, probably not. Would you like me to? she asked. She blinked, then hesitated. I should add...Felecia is a Rider, but she lost her companion. He is still alive within his Heart of Hearts, but...the damage is still done. She is not dangerous or out of control, I just caution you that she is hurting and not to be too surprised if she rarely speaks.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven heard Sarai's words, sadness and an ache in her heart for the Pair, Felecia and the unknown dragon. I understand, she said, a sick feeling permeating her gut as she considered what would happen if she ever lost Oceanis. The cerulean female keened softly and wrapped her mind around Raven's, forbidding her to brood on such morbid thoughts. Raven smiled and twined her mind with Oceanis's. Go ahead and contact as many as you feel like would be willing to come, where we're going has enough room to accomodate all, Raven said after a moment.

If not we can always create more lodgings for them, there is a forest with good timber close by, Oceanis added. Truthfully she didn't think they would need to resort to such measures, the rooms of the outpost were old and in dire need of cleaning, but the walls were sound according to Raven and she could attest to their size being well within the comfort of most dragons. I suppose the elves will want to help us clean it up though, she said, the thought occuring to her for the first time. With the end of the war it would be possible for the Queen to send a delegation to help with the rebuilding they were about to attempt.

I hadn't thought of that, Raven said, frowning. Being half-elf and a Rider to boot, it was well within her rights to ask the Queen for such assistance, but she wasn't sure she wanted to. What say you three? she asked the group.

The elves are a complicated race, but never are their motives more true than when it comes to dealings with dragons. I think it would be a wise thing to send for their assistance, Gornath replied, knowing the final decision rested with Raven.

Sarai chirped in acknowledgement and closed her eyes, reaching along her bonds to the three she had mentioned. Sofranir was the first to respond, quite eagerly too, then Tel'aeír. Both of them agreed to come and help, and were already on their way. Felecia was the slowest to respond, taking nearly a full two minutes before Sarai felt even the slightest stirring of interest. When she was about to give up, there was a sluggish acknowledgement and agreement. The hatchling sighed in relief and smiled a little. It would be good for Felecia to get out. Though...She glanced at Raven and Anthor, and their respective companions. She hadn't thought of that. Seeing other Riders with their partners probably wouldn't help. She winced at her carelessness and hoped it wouldn't harm her friend any more than she was. Felecia had been the closest, so Sarai was expecting to see the elf in a few minutes. She reached up and nuzzled Raven's arm with her snout. Felecia is nearby so she should be here shortly. My cousins will take a little longer, but not much. And I agree, the elves would probably love to help us out with this. she chirped, her eyes bright with eagerness.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven felt the little hatchling's hesitation and sent her a questioning thought before responding. Ok then, guess we're inviting the elves, she said, feeling a little awkward. The immortal beings had always treated her with the utmost respect, given she was the daughter of a Rider and a Rider in her own, but they had always seemed stiff and unsure of how to address her. Being half-elf they had always seemed to hold her at arm's length instead of embracing her wholly as they would their own children. Now that she had been gone for some years, it made for awkward silences and straightforward talk, not the banter you would usually see between humans or dwarves.

She unbuckled herself from the saddle and twisted around so she could reach her saddlebags. Withdrawing a bowl and a flask of water, she breached the magical barrier in her mind. Pouring a measure of liquid into the bowl, she murmurred the words for the scrying spell that would allow her to hear and speak, as well as see. Before long an elven attendant of the queen appeared, his face haggard and his eyes filled with tears.

Alarmed, but determined to get the conversation over with, Raven breached the terms of etiquette and requested to see the queen before the proper greeting was complete. "Alas Shur'tugal, the Queen is no more. The battle has been won, but our queen was taken in the victory. Relay your wishes upon me and I will pass it on to the Elven High Council," the attendant said, his voice full of sorrow.

Raven looked at him with shock plain on her face. Her hand darted into her pocket and pulled out Nasuada's missive. She unrolled it and scanned it, nowhere did it mention the passing of Islanzadi. She shook her head and looked up at the elf, he was frowning at her through his tears. "My apologies, I had not been informed of this tragedy. Although there is hope to be had, if it would please the High Council, I request a group of elves to attend me at the old training outpost of the Riders on the far western edge of the Spine, in the far north of Alagaesia. Tell them that it would probably be best to send a ship of some sort up from the South, for we will require provisions to get the outpost up to par and running again. Most importantly, express my sincere shock and anguish at the queen's death. She was a true warrior, and died a noble death. I am proud to have known her," Raven said, speaking entirely in the Ancient Language. To the practiced ear, there was a note of chagrin and sadness the emphasized what she said about the queen, hidden among the lilting notes of the musical language.

The elf said he would pass on the message, then Raven ended the spell. She leaned back in the saddle and frowned, staring up at the sky. The war has ended and I can feel a massive shift in the world happening around us, she said to Oceanis. "I have passed on our request and the elves should be coming," she said aloud to the group.

Oceanis hummed in agreement with Raven's assessment, and pondered what she had heard.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Sarai listened in silence as the conversation unfolded, revealing tragic news. She closed her eyes with grief. She had not known Queen Islanzadi personally, though she had met the Queen once or twice. She had respected the Elf highly and was saddened by the great loss of her leadership. She wondered who would take the throne, then, in her place. She shook these thoughts from her mind, as they were thoughts for another time. The hatchling looked up at Raven and crooned softly, nuzzling her arm. Things will get better. It will take time, but they will. She died for a great cause, and I have a feeling she would be very pleased with the outcome were we able to ask her. she comforted, chirping lightly. She lifted her head and turned slightly to her right when she sensed a familiar presence. Felecia. Sarai stood on all four paws and purred happily, careful to keep her balance on Oceanis's back. The elf flew in on her own wings. They were a light russet brown and draconic in shape and strong, the only difference being that the flight membrane was thicker and not as fragile as a regular dragons wings. Visible around Felecia's neck was a dark stone, held in a silver wire cage on a silver chain. To a Dragon Rider, it was a known sight, an Eldunari. The female elf pulled up and flew beside Oceanis. She glanced over at Sarai with sapphire blue eyes that seemed as cold and lifeless as the mountain snows. I have come. Who are your friends, Sarai? she asked tonelessly. Sarai snorted happily. This is Raven and Oceanis, and Anthor and Gornath. And this is Felecia. she introduced. Felecia eyed each of them, a flicker of pain crossing her expression, but it passed quickly. A pleasure. said the elf, dipping her head slightly.

Raven smiled and reached behind her, scratching underneath Sarai's chin as she used to do to Oceanis when she was a hatchling. She stopped when the black-gold stood and respectfully introduced their group. Raven looked curiously at the ex-Rider's wings, then dipped her head respectfully. "Pleased to meet you Felecia-elda," she murmurred, looking up into her sad blue eyes. For a moment she thought she saw some emotion flicker across the other woman's face, but it was gone as swiftly as it had appeared.

"Has Sarai informed you of what it is we are intending to do?" she asked her, calling loudly over the rush of the wind. She looked over Oceanis's shoulder in time to see them pass over some body of water, but distracted as she was, she could not immediately place it.

Oceanis reached out with her mind to the Eldunari around the Rider's neck, hesitantly at first in case she objected, then introduced herself to the dragon within. I am Oceanis, daughter of Greentalon, who are you? she asked politely.

Felecia's eyes roved listlessly over the horizon, then slowly turned back to the elf-human Rider. Aye, I sensed what was needed through Sarai when she called me. With this war over and the discovery of so many eggs, Rider outposts and training grounds will be needed once more. she murmured quietly. She glanced at the blue dragoness, Oceanis she remembered, contact her companion. She stiffened only slightly, protectiveness and fear making her tremble, but she forced herself to calm down and relax. Oceanis had no reason to harm her companion.

- - - - - - - - - -

The dragon within the Eldunari stirred sluggishly as another mind touched it's own. It flared and reached out, returning contact. I am Ebony Silvertalon, Son of None. I am pleased to meet you, Oceanis, daughter of Greentalon. I sense two others besides yourself and Sarai, may I ask who they are as well? as he finished speaking another voice took over, deeper and with more of a gentle timbre in it. And I'm Reona. Yes, I am another mind sharing this body, so to speak. I was forcefully joined to Ebony here by Galbatorix, the jackal. I am pleased to meet you as well, and perhaps you can help me get this lump of light here to be less mouse-like and be more included in things. he griped, making a snort-like sound even though he had no body to produce it.

Oceanis was about to reply to Ebony, but recoiled in shock when another voice emanated from within the Eldunari. The new voice was richer and darker than Ebony's own, and introduced itself as Reona. She carefully twined her mind further into the Eldunari, but only slightly, so that she could get a better feel of such a strange connection. She sat there like that for a minute, like a cat watching an interesting looking bird on the other side of a window, before she replied. You must be sensing Anthor and Gornath, another Pair that is accompanying us, she said, showing the two of them a picture. She looked over at Gornath to see if he wished to join the conversation, but the big white shook his head and gestured with a wingtip for her to continue.

"Yes, that's exactly what we're doing," Raven said, pleased that she wouldn't have to repeat their mission again. She looked at the Rider with concern when Oceanis reached out to the Eldunari, but when she didn't react, Raven relaxed. She felt Oceanis react to something about the Eldunari, but before she could get concerned again, Oceanis calmed down and a sense of curiosity radiated from her. She cocked an eyebrow at Oceanis, which the dragoness couldn't see as she was faced forward into the wind.

"Sarai, how far out are your cousins?" she asked the black-gold hatchling.

Ebony snorted softly and gave the impression of nodding his head to Oceanis. Aye, we have met them for a brief time before. Reona interjected. It was before my time, though. he said. The space inside the Eldunari shimmered for a moment, and then two draconic shapes appeared. One was a dark midnight blue with silver talons and spikes, and eyes the color of molten gold. The other was midnight black with eyes the color of a black void. Reona, the midnight black one, dipped his head, as did Ebony, the midnight blue one. I hope that this venture helps pull my partner-heart from her shell. She has retreated from people since our passing, even her loved ones such as her mate and son. She holds much bitterness and anger in her. And guilt. Ebony crooned sadly.

- - - - - - - - - -

Sarai blinked up at Raven. Not much farther. actually... she tilted her head and listened carefully. After a moment she nodded. Yep, they're here. Look up. she said with a laugh. Sofranir, a pale blue dragoness that almost appeared to be silver, was slightly ahead. When Sarai looked up and crowed a greeting, Anir bugled back in reply. Tel'aeír was slightly behind his older sister, flying in a specific way that let Anir's tail always be touching his shoulder. He was a light lavender shade. He too bugled in greeting. Anir backwinged and soared a little above them, her eyes, like two clear silver pools, glittering with excitement. Even Tel's pale white irises gleamed a little. Hiya, I'm Sofranir and this is my little brother Tel'aeír, but you can call us Anir and Tel, less of a mouthful that way. she chirped excitedly.

You have? she said in surprise, cocking an eyeridge at Gornath. He hadn't mentioned it when Sarai mentioned calling Ebony and the others to them. Yes, I can imagine. Raven has her own problems, and the guilt of it all can come crashing down on her at the most unexpected of moments, but that is talk for another time, preferrably never, Oceanis said, remembering the few times Raven had undergone her Bloodwrath. She dipped her head in return to the spectral images of the two dragons in her mind. I will do my best to aid your Rider, Ebony, she promised.

Raven looked up when Sarai directed, squinting against the bright sunshine. Before long she saw a streak of bright blue light, almost silver darting through the air over them, accompanied by a streak of lavender right on it's heels. She grinned, even from this distance she could feel the happy, exuberant energy radiating off the pair of young dragons flying towards them. "Well met Tel and Anir," she said, grinning at them. She looked over at Felecia to see how the appearance of the happy youngsters would affect the somber Rider.

Ebony smiled slightly. That is all that me and Reona can ask. he said simply.

- - - - - - - - - -

Felecia glanced at the two young dragons from the corner of her eye. So innocent and untouched by this war, even though they both had fought in plenty of their own battles. Against her will, a tiny, tiny smile pulled on one corner of her mouth.

- - - - - - - - - -

Sofranir prummed with delight and did a backloop, her eyes sparkling. Aye, and to you too. she chirped. Tel rolled his eyes and snorted in exasperation at his sister's upbeat attitude, but even so there was a smile on his muzzle. We're here to help! declared Anir, bugling with her eagerness. She felt alive with energy and wanted to use it, and knew Tel felt the same even if he didn't show it as much.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven heard the sibling's banter and saw Felecia's smile, and laughed aloud, as much from one as the other. She felt good about this undertaking of their's, and felt once again the eagerness to be on the way pooling inside her, until it bubbled up and out with her laughter, making it richer and louder. "Let us be off then!" she called, leaning forward over Oceanis's saddle.

Oceanis paused in her talk with Ebony and Reona, tilting her head to the side so that she could drink in her Rider's laughter. The serious female hardly ever truly laughed, and to the cerulean female, it was the most wondrous sound in the world. She bugled happily and poured more speed into her wings, arrowing across the skies.

I just hope there will be enough work to go around. With all these youngsters here, we might have naught to do but sit around and grow lazy and fat while they work their little wings off, she said to Gornath, projecting her thoughts to the entire group.

The white laughed, the sound like an avalanche over the rush of air around them all. I think you might have a point there Oceanis, he replied.

"How are you with stone Tel? The walls of the keep are stone, hewn from the mountain itself. It's very like Tronjheim, I suppose," Raven asked, showing them the city-mountain in case they had never seen it. "Aside from the central room that goas all the way through the top of the mountain that is," she added.

Tel snorted softly and spoke for the first time. His voice was level and smooth, not deep like the rest of his kind, but calming and light. Stone is fine with me, my only weakness is titanium. I can't See it, and it drains my energy if it gets close to me or touches me. he informed them coolly. I have been practicing, so it -is- possible for me to function around it, just more difficult than normal. he added quietly.

"Alright, that will be just perfect, since you know what to look for," Raven said, pleased. "I think we'll have you check where he'll be moving around the most to start with, and then room-by-room as we get farther in," she added, thinking about how much they had to do and not wanting to wear the young dragon out. "As for the rest of us, we have more mundane things to do. The spells repelling pests inside and around the outpost are all but gone, so we spellcasters will have to rework those, and everyone will have to help with the cleaning and making the place liveable. After that I and the elves on the way will work on the books and ledgers," she said, just to fill the air. Inwardly she grimaced and groaned about the book copying, which was nowhere near as fascinating as her own hobby of mapmaking.

Also, be careful, and stay sharp. As Raven said, the pest-repelling spells have been all but destroyed by time or worn out. However, I also sensed something else while we were there, I couldn't quite pick out what it was, but it's not good. Keep an eye on the two-legs, Oceanis said privately to the dragons.

OOC: If you haven't guessed from what Oceanis said, they're not going to get much cleaning done. *whistles innocently*

With Sarai with us, she'll be able to sense anything coming our way at least a few minutes before it reaches us. she said confidently. Sarai snorted softly but smiled wolfishly. And kick whatever it is back into the gloom wherever it came from. she said with a low draconic chuckle.

Oceanis chuckled at Anir and nodded her head in agreement. Sarai's strange abilities really would serve them well here. You are right, little one. Still, let us not be too overconfident, she said, lazily arching through the air so that she passed over the two siblings.

Post Re: Safe Haven
OOC: I just remembered I was gonna have Tobias and Avalon in this topic. Should it be after that cave exploration topic you, me, and I don't remember who all else was in? Toby and Avalon met Anir and Tel there, even though it barely got started.

Raven grinned, when the young dragoness put it that way, she had to agree with her. It had been a long time since she and Oceanis had really gotten into any messes. She liked the peace and quiet for sure, but still she felt the desire to pit herself against an enemy or challenge with her full strength. She wanted a challenge, unlike the tasks that had been set before them lately.

Don't get too eager my dear, some challenges out there are not meant for younglings, Oceanis whispered inside Raven's mind, her words warm and amused at the change brought on her Rider by the arrival of the energetic hatchlings. She felt Raven twine a small tendril of thought around her words and squeeze in silent agreement.

The cerulean dragoness checked her position against the sun and discovered they were drifting a little too far south. She adjusted the angle of their flight, noting with distaste the slight wind blowing from due north that was now hitting them at a diagonal. Out of the corner of her eye she could see Anthor pulling on gloves and she could feel Raven rummaging for her own in the bags on her saddle.

So Anir, Tel. How exactly are you two related to Sarai? Raven asked them, projecting her thoughts as she pulled on gloves to protect her hands from the cold wind whipping around her.

"It's interesting that you all hatched so close to each other," Raven said, smiling as she watched Anir spiral through the air. She was very much reminded of Oceanis, though the cerulean hadn't been quite so vocal at that age. "I guess you all basically grew up together then?"

Oceanis swooped around the younger dragoness and her brother, spinning around completely to pass under them before righting herself on their other side. She loved the energy of the young dragons, and she realized that soon she might have students of her very own that might be like them. She hummed happily at the thought, and smiled warmly with her thoughts when Raven reached out to find what had made her so happy. Do you three plan on staying long after we've set up the outpost? We might not have students for a long while, but you are welcome to stay as long as you like, Oceanis said to them. She looked at Anthor and Gornath and cocked her head, indicating the invitation extended to them as well.

Anir spun in the air once more, chirping with glee as Oceanus swooped under them, gazing at the large blue dragoness. The dragonling tilted her head and nodded. Aye, we did. We weren't really close growing up, but we at least had each other. she said, smiling widely. Tel rolled his eyes. If you ever meet my baby sister and big brother, be prepared for snapping. Those two are always at each other throats. he said, with a dry smile. Sarai snorted softly in agreement, having been present for one of their spats. Anir glanced over at Felecia, concerned by how quiet the elven Rider was. She swooped over and flew beside the winged twoleg, chirping lightly. Well, me and Tel plan on staying, I don't know about Sarai or Felecia here. I hope you two decide to stay, this school will need all the hands it can get. And your knowledge could be a real help, Felecia. she chirped, her silver eyes bright. The elf's lips twitched in a tiny smile. I will think on it. she replied.

OOC:
Will Liam be here too? o.o I vaguely remember planning months ago that Felecia would get the dragonette egg he's carrying, but for the life of me I can't remember where we intended to have that happen. @.@

Oceanis chuckled, her eyes warm, but sad. I often wonder if I wouldn't have been the same way with my own nestmates, she said to Anir, a little wistfully.

Raven patted her shoulder comfortingly and relayed images of light and warmth to her. The cerulean prummed silently at her in return. The half-elf smiled and looked at Felecia. "Yes, I would very much like it if you would stay and teach. Oceanis and I know a lot, but we are young. The more experienced Riders and dragons we can find to teach, the better," she said to the winged elf.

OOC: Ah, now that's already happened. Actually, in that topic, Raven and Oceanis meet Felecia. Remember darkie's topic about taking a boat to the land of the Darkness or whatever? Yeah... >.>

Anir snorted and grinned at Oceanus, her silver eyes glittering. Oh it's not always peaceful. Zeuk and Quasar, our oldest and youngest siblings respectively, can sometimes be like demons snapping at each others throats. But we do all love each other and protect the others. she said, and smiled wider. She couldn't imagine having hatched with no siblings and being alone. She liked have the other three around to play with and be her friends.

- - - - - - - - - -

Felecia pursed her lips and glanced to the side at Raven. She blinked, and her eyes were abruptly filled with memories. Happy, sad, it didn't matter. She closed them and looked away, hiding the gleam that looked suspiciously like tears. It was silent for a moment as she tried to gather herself. A shrill whistle wavered through the air, and a little fiery red comet flashed down from above and slowed with a few beats of it's tiny wings. The creature's body was as long as Felecia's arm, not including its tail and neck. It chirruped lovingly and circled around Felecia, its eyes whirling with worry, before delicately landing on the elf's back between her wings. Felecia's lips pulled into a small smile, a genuine one that made her eyes glitter with life once more. The little mini dragon leaned forward and nuzzled its head against her neck, purring lovingly. Oceanus, Raven, I suppose you remember Jetaema? she said, still smiling slightly. Jeta purred more, heating her body slightly to help relax the ex-Rider. Felecia took a breath and looked back over to Raven and nodded slowly. I..would be happy to help you teach new young Riders. she said softly. Ebony rumbled soothingly deep within her mind with satisfaction and pride.

OOC: Lol, nah, it's just been awhile. XD

Raven looked around for the source of the piercing whistle and spotted a brilliant red dart just as it pulled up and attached itself to Felecia. Ahh, Jetaema, it's good to see you again, she said, smiling with delight. She loved seeing the little dragonettes flit to and fro, they were so much like miniature dragons it was shocking. They were the size of babies, but they possessed all the grace and majesty of the dragons themselves. Have you heard from Fin or Vix lately? she asked the little one, watching her brilliant red scales glitter in the sunlight.

The Rider turned to Felecia, grinning broadly. "You will? That's excellent! I can't wait to see all you have to teach them," she said, crowing with excitement.

Oceanis carefully turned her head and flicked her tongue at Jeta, gently catching the fiery little dragonette on the tip of her wing where she lay on Felecia's back. It is good to see you, little cousin, she said fondly.

She faced front again, rolling her eye so she could see Anir. Yes, never forget to be grateful for your family. My own family was slaughtered by Urgals before I hatched. Raven is all I have, she said, feeling the sudden urge to curl her neck around the half-human Rider. They both agreed without words not to speak of the one sibling that had survived the massacre with her, it hurt too much to think about what had befallen him.

Anir nodded her head somberly in agreement, her silver eyes glittering with sadness. However, she felt a small tickle at the back of her mind, and she eyed Oceanus from the corner of her eye. An ability she had inherited from her father was an ability to know if she was lied to, or a lie was told about her. Oceanus had just lied about Raven being all she had left. Perhaps it was unintentional. She snorted and shook her head, ignoring the tickle. Aye, we all are grateful. Even Zeuk and Quasar when they get on each others nerves. I sympathize for your loss, but am happy that you have someone as precious as Raven to be your partner. she said, and smiled happily at the blue dragoness.

- - - - - - - - - -

Jeta prummed and rustled her wings. And you too Raven. No I haven't seen Fin or Vix lately, but when I do I'll give Fin a tail swat for you. the dragonette twittered, her eyes glittering with humor. Fin was her oldest brother, and the sourest of the bunch usually. She remembered how she had greeted him upon hatching; she'd looked at him, trilled, and bawled him over onto his back. She grinned at the memory. He'd given her a scolding something fierce, but at her expression he'd lightened up a bit and let her play with him. Jeta twisted at the touch on her wing, and grinned at Oceanus. She chirruped and purred at her greeting, her scales flaring with warm heat. Felecia reached back and rubbed her side, to which she purred louder. It will be good to see the new generations. I was never trained under a Mentor, so most of what I teach may be rudimentary, but it will help them survive if they still need to. said the female elf.

I would have to agree with you there Felecia. Any training that will help them survive is what is needed, and it is what they shall recieve, Oceanis said. The cerulean smiled at the younger dragoness's words, cocking her head at Anir. You are very wise for a young one, you will make a good teacher in the future, she said. Oceanis tilted her head to the side at Jeta's words, remembering the moment the little red had hatched. The larger dragon smiled at the memory, her serrated fangs showing. I don't think I've ever seen anything so contrary and ornery as your brother, she said to the little female, pensively.

"Unfortunately there are very few alive today that have had formal instruction, and we will cherish those few in the coming years, if I don't miss my guess," Raven assured Felecia. She herself had received very little formal instruction after becoming a Rider, but she had been raised among elves and magic, which was a bigger advantage than many of their students would have.

"We should reach the caves by sundown tomorrow, if all goes well," she said to the flying Rider. "Feel free to rest on Oceanis's back if you feel the need," she added.

Felecia nodded in agreement silently, her expression becoming a little distant as Ebony spoke to her. Her eyebrows furrowed into a scowl after a few moments. She turned to Raven and Oceanis, her lips pulled back into a thin line. Ebony wants to know if he could teach as well, if needed. she said. She nodded again at the offer to rest on Oceanus's back.

Anir grinned widely. I don't think I'd have the patience to teach. I barely have it for this lug here. she laughed and tapped Tel playfully on the shoulder. He huffed and glared back at her, his pearl colored eyes glittering with mischief.

- - - - - - - - - - -

Jeta prummed and laughed, her eyes glittering with humor. Oh yes, certainly. she chuckled, thinking about her brother. She'd have to get him something she knew he liked, which, sadly, was harder than it sounded because she hadn't spent overmuch time with her older siblings, at least socially.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven chuckled at Anir's words. I used to think the same thing you know, but after everything I've seen and did, or had happen to me, I can think of nothing more enticing than kicking back for a century or two and beating a few young minds into shape, she said with a wolfish grin, her yellow-hazel eyes flashing in the sunlight. We would be honored to have Ebony teach with us, she said to Felecia.

Tel, you're so quiet I had almost forgotten you were there, Oceanis teased, turning to look at the young male. Does Anir do all the talking for you?

Jeta, if you can figure out what it is that your brother likes, I will make you a golden chain to wear around your neck, the cerulean vowed, chuckling. From what she knew of the black dragonette, it would be liking breaking a moutain with a nutcracker trying to find out what pleased him.

Toby was lounging on Avalon's back, staring up through the trees at the beautiful blue sky. One leg was hanging down the side of the silver's saddle, the other was propped against the front of the saddle and a neck spike. "That one there looks like the crazy old baker lady that lived down the street from the orphanage," he said, pointing out a cloud shaped like a human head. A particularly dark spot in the chin area made it look like the head had a huge mole.

Didn't she used to give you sweet breads to eat when the man who ran the orphanage wasn't looking? Avalon said lazily, his eyes partially closed while he basked in the sunlight.

"Yes she did, but that doesn't mean she wasn't crazy. I once saw her have an entire conversation with a donkey. Every time the donkey brayed she would call it George and remark on how hoarse his voice was sounding," the young Rider said with a crooked grin.

Avalon lifted his head off his forepaws and twisted his neck peering down at his Rider with brilliant white-silver eyes. He stared until Toby shifted restlessly. "What?" the red-haired boy said defensively.

Nothing, I was just waiting to see if lightning would strike you for being so impudent, the dragon said casually, turning to lay his head back on his paws. Just before his head touched his feet he saw something glittering in the sky above them, but several miles away. The young dragon surged to his feet, his unsuspecting Rider falling unceremoniously to the ground at his side.

"Oi! What's the big idea, jumping around like that?" Toby yelped, picking himself up from the undignified heap he had landed in.

Look Tobias, dragons! Val said, directing the boy's eyes with his thoughts. He felt the youngster's surprise and crouched down just as he turned to scramble up his side into the saddle.

"Let's go say hi, but be prepared to flee. It might be some of Galbatorix's minions come to make us swear loyalty to him," Toby said cheerfully, though there was a wary look on his face. In recent months he had become tired of always running away from the people hunting him down for his power, although he knew it was the only choice he had. He was nowhere near powerful enough to resist the agents the king had at his disposal, let alone the tyrant himself.

Avalon leaped easily into the sky, arrowing quickly through the sky until they were slightly above the approaching dragons. I think we should let them get closer before we say anything. I can't make them out just yet. I want to size them up for potential danger before we let them know just how young we are, Avalon said, before Toby could launch into an introduction. The boy tapped his thoughts in acknowledgement.

Felecia nodded, and couldn't help smiling a little as Ebony prummed within her mind with content.

Tel chuckled and grinned. Usually, yes. She's the mischief maker of the group. But I put up with it. She's my eyes; I have to put up with it if I want to know what's going on. Even if she's a little nosy sometimes and tells me some things I'd rather not know. he said, his pearl colored eyes sparkling. Anir snorted with indignation, but her silver eyes glittered in response. Oh please. You like gossip as much as any dragon does. she retorted playfully, and he chuckled, inclining his head slightly. Touche. he returned.

- - - - - - - - - -

Jeta trilled excitedly and blew a small tail of flames from her nostrils, careful to not singe Felecia's hair. I'll hold you to that. she chirped, her small ruby eyes whirling with eagerness.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Raven heard Tel's response to Oceanis and laughed aloud so hard, she was rolling in her saddle. She could just picture the look on Tel's face when Anir happened to tell him something he didn't really want to know. One of the wonders of having siblings, I suppose, she teased, reaching out and tweaking the edge of the young male's flight membrane as Oceanis flew by. As she settle back into her saddle, she saw something silver shoot up from the ground ahead of them. The silver streak rapidly gained height until it was a half-mile above them. The half-elf Rider squinted her eyes, trying to judge the distance between them and the new dragon, because there was only one thing in Alagaesia that shone like that.

Look sharp friends, we have company, she said, pointing out the stranger.

Oceanis smiled, showing her razor sharp teeth. I'm sure you will, little cousin, she said, teasing the dragonette with a picture of a fine gold chain, studded with tiny diamonds and rubies.

When Raven spoke of strangers, Oceanis flicked her eyes to where her Rider was pointing. She growled with displeasure, she should have seen them long before Raven. It was her job to spot anything that might be dangerous to her Rider before her Rider spotted it. You're right, it's a dragon Raven, but I don't think it's very old. Now that you've pointed them out, they don't look very big. The Rider certainly isn't, she said to her Rider, overlaying her vision with Raven's so the Rider could see what her dragon was.

Raven looked around their group and back at the new dragon. Their courses were slightly different, Raven and the others were headed slightly away from them. A rider? And a young one at that? Raven hesitated, looking at the young dragons accompanying them. She had no doubts they could take care of themselves against an opponent of similar size or larger, but there was no guaranteeing the age or skill level of a dragon simply by looking at it from a distance.

Go towards them Oceanis, but cautiously. You others, stay behind Felicia and me, she said to the younglings, staring them in the eyes to make sure they heard her and acknowledged her order. Gornath, Anthor, if we're attacked, get the young one's out of here, she said to the white dragon and his Rider. They nodded in acknowledgement and slid over to fly beside the younger dragons.

I don't think they mean us harm, they look more wary than anything. Besides, Galbatorix is done for, who else would want to harm us? Oceanis said, but still turned slowly and deliberately in the air, her chest slightly expanded and her throat full of flames, ready to defend her young friends.

OOC: Felecia can be the first to speak with Toby and Avalon, or Tel and Anir, if you want.

Felecia gazed ahead steadily, one ear on the others' conversations, the other on the surroundings. Her eyes, instinctively, scanned the horizon, and she saw the glint of silver almost at the same time that Raven did. She flew ahead of the group with a few beats of her wings, focusing her eyes to get a clearer picture. She smiled slightly. They had grown since she saw them last, but she recognized them. She glanced back at the others. Easy, I know them. Both Ebony and I do. So do Anir and Tel, I believe. It's Avalon and Tobias. They are young and perhaps slightly too trusting, but good in their hearts. she said. She looked ahead once more and flew ahead, lifting a hand to wave at them. Tobias, Avalon, it's Felecia. Anir and Tel too. This is Oceanus and Raven, and Anthor and Gornath. It's been a while since we last met, how has your lives fared? she called, her sapphire eyes glinting with quiet happiness. She enjoyed the company of these two younglings immensely.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Avalon watched carefully, his white-silver eyes curious. He could see something small flying towards them through the air. It was much too large to be a bird, and was shaped vaguely like a human. His eyes narrowed with carefully contained, happy suspicion. Toby...I think that's- he started to say, before Felecia's thoughts reached them, Felecia. he finished, smiling. He prummed happily and surged forward, twisting through the air. He reached the Rider quickly, corkscrewing through the air around her, passing so close to her that his left forepaw brushed her wing.

"Felecia!" Toby yelled enthusiastically when Avalon reached her. He grinned and waved like a maniac. Avalon pulled up suddenly and Toby slipped in the saddle, recovering his balance quickly. "Hey Felecia! Hi! How are you?" he babbled, still waving. He saw the young dragons behind her at the same time Avalon noticed them. "Hey you guys! Good to see you!" he laughed, both arms thrashing the air. "We're good, taking a break from Equinox's teaching. We seem to do that a lot," he said to the winged Rider, with a roguish wink at Tel and Anir. He had met the siblings on one such break.

You must be Raven and Oceanis, Avalon said to the larger cerulean female and her Rider. As Felecia no doubt told you, I am Avalon and the annoying one is Tobias, he said with a smile, his eyes twinkling.

"Nice to meet you Avalon... and Tobias," Raven said, cocking her eyebrow uncertainly at the young Rider. His hair was long and unkempt for a boy, and there was a devilish twinkle to his eyes that made her reach for her wallet to make sure it was still there, even though they were in midair. He couldn't have been older than twelve, but sat astride his dragon with the skill of a seasoned veteran. Most Riders his age would have been shaken to death if they hadn't been strapped in during those maneuvers Avalon was doing, she remarked to Oceanis.

Oceanis tapped Raven's mind in agreement, then turned her attention to Avalon. Indeed we are, youngling. We are well met indeed, I would think, from the way Felecia greeted you, she said, her own eyes sparkling brilliantly. Privately she started hoping these two might accompany them, even though they mentioned being tutored by Equinox. She couldn't help but feel they would make a lively addition to their group.

"Hey Felecia! Look! We've got a proper saddle now! All thanks to Equinox! He set us up with a really nice saddle maker," Toby said, gesturing for her attention. He stood up on Avalon's swaying back so she could see better, totally unafraid, his feet on the seat of the saddle.

Oceanis uttered a shocked, coughing growl and Raven yelped when the foolhardy Rider stood up in his saddle. Her right paw twitched as if to grab him, but she stopped and looked at Felecia, totally shocked. Are they always this way? she asked, her tone uncertain. She couldn't understand how Avalon could just allow his young Rider to do something so dangerous without saying something, or doing something about it.

At the stream of welcome and chatter Felecia couldn't hide the wide, warm smile that cracked through her cold expression and brought life to her face. She chuckled softly and shook her head, not even trying to get a word in edgewise because she knew it was futile. When he beckoned her to inspect his new saddle she hovered closer and did so, nodding once in approval. It is of very good make, comfortable but still small to allow for easy and fast travel. she remarked with a smile. She glanced to the side at Oceanus and Raven, her sapphire eyes glittering with something new; mischief. Indeed. This is actually mild. she said, and chuckled softly. Anir barreled forward and nudged noses with Avalon, humming happily. Tel dipped his head as well in greeting. Oh it's so good to see you again Avalon, Tobias. exclaimed the silver blue dragoness in delight. Felecia smiled, then folded in her wings slightly and landed on Avalon's back, smiling at the young Rider. She tousled his hair playfully. Sit down in your saddle before you give poor Raven and Anthor a heart attack? she told him privately, her eyes warm for the first time in ages. Jeta whizzed down and circled around Tobias, chirping excitedly. Hello, I'm Jetaema, you can just call me Jeta. I am a dragonette, not a dragon. Who're you? she twittered, her sweet music-like mental voice making Felecia only smile wider.

Post Re: Safe Haven
"What?" Toby asked in confusion, then he looked across at the two strange Riders and saw the looks of concern on their faces. "Oh! Sure, no problem," he said, giggling. He plopped down unceremoniously and slid his legs through the loops on Val's saddle. "No worries," he said, wiggling his bare feet after he tightened the leg straps, so they could see he was safely strapped in. Something bright red and glittering darted passed his face and he flinched, recovering quickly. He eyed the tiny creature with awe. "Well hello gorgeous," he said appreciatively, watching the dragonette. "Val! You've got to see this, she's like a miniature dragon!" he laughed, twisting around in his saddle, watching Jeta like a bubbly, blue-eyed hawk.

Avalon grinned excitedly and bumped noses with Anir. Good to see you as well, I haven't heard from you two since we were down in those caves! he said, reminiscing. He heard a flutter of wings and twisted his head, trying to get a good look at the sparkling red thing that was flitting around his Rider. Greetings Jetaema, now could you hold still so I can see you better? he said with a laugh, his bright, white-silver eyes flicking to and fro, following her movements.

Raven frowned at Felecia. This... is mild? she asked incredulously. She looked the young Rider up and down, watching as he expertly laced up his safety loops, all the while talking ninety miles an hour. Oh my. she said weakly.

Oceanis huffed heavily when Toby dropped back down into his saddle. Yes, oh my sums it up perfectly, she said, although she sounded more enthused than her Rider. She would love to have the chance to teach these two; she could tell they had the makings to be one of the great Rider pairs. Tobias, Avalon, what is a young Pair like yourselves doing in the middle of nowhere, away from your teachers? Oceanis asked.

"Oh, like we said, we're taking a break. Equinox knows roughly where we are, we think," Toby said nonchalantly, making faces at Tel. "But we could ask you guys the same thing. What are you guys doing in such a large group? Aren't you afraid that Galbatorix will learn of it and come hunting you?" he asked, looking at Felecia in confusion. Then something dawned on him and he frowned. "Felecia, where's Ebony? I thought he didn't like you being far away from him?" he asked, looking around for the midnight blue dragon. He saw a black-gold hatchling peeking around Raven on Oceanis's back and waved at her, still looking for Ebony.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Jeta prummed and obliged, hovering in front of Tobias carefully. She chirped, then plopped down onto the saddle in front of the young Rider. She pushed her tiny head under his hand and burred softly in her chest, preening happily under his comments.

- - - - - - - - - -

Felecia smiled slightly, and even wider when the boy asked why they were traveling so freely. Haven't you heard Galbatorix is dead. So is Shruikan. The war is over. she said, quiet joy in her tone at the news, though she hadn't shown it before. At his next question though, pain rippled across her face before she could stop it. She swallowed, but managed to look at him when she answered. He was...killed, a while ago, when we left overseas to help some other friends in their own war. she lifted her hand and touched the midnight blue stone, which was length of her palm and the width of her smallest finger. This is all that remains of him. Him and Reona. When you and Avalon have been paired for a few more years, Equinox will explain to you what this is. Avalon knows, instinctively, but it won't be taught to you for a while. For now, simply know that Ebony and Reona are dead only in body, not in spirit. she said quietly. Jeta hummed worriedly, and Felecia smiled at the dragonette to reassure her that she was fine.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Avalon blinked, shock on his silver-scaled face. His wings stopped flapping for a moment and he dropped height rapidly before he recovered. He flew back up beside the others and looked at Felecia. The war is... Over? he confirmed, not daring to believe he had heard correctly. Not waiting for a second confirmation, he bugled joyfully and did a loop through the air. He came to rest on Felecia's other side, his eyes sparkling happily. That is wonderful news! I am upset that Tobias and I did not get to participate in the battles, but it is still most wonderful news! he said, laughing brightly.

His good mood was dampened considerably when the Rider answered Toby's other question. The bright twinkle in his eyes darkened and he keened softly, reaching over and carefully nuzzling Felecia's side. I will miss him, he said sadly, remembering the big blue dragon.

He felt Jeta settle on the saddle in front of Toby and he craned his head to get a better look at the creature. Her ruby-red scales were a startling contrast to his own silver scales. She did look very much like a dragon hatchling, but he supposed he could see the differences between the dragonette and a dragon hatchling. Hello tiny cousin, he said, peering down at her before turning his head to watch where he was flying.

Toby felt a blissful moment of elated shock upon hearing that Galbatorix and his stolen dragon were dead. After a second the shock turned to disappointment that he had missed the big battle. Finally the shock turned to cold sadness and disbelief when he heard that one of his friends had died. He blinked, the twinkle in his own eyes gone, and looked over at Felecia with tears in his eyes. "I'm sorry Felecia, I wish I could have been there," he said, feeling useless. He had missed the biggest and longest war in Alagaesian history, and he had missed being there to help his friends when they needed him most. To make it worse, his own heart was feeling like it was being ripped from his chest just from considering how it would feel to lose Avalon.

He looked down when Jeta landed in front of him, smiling half-heartedly at the dragonette. He reached out a hand and moodily scratched under her chin, marveling at the tiny purr she was making.

I had forgotten they would be too young to know of Eldunari. What should we do? They know Ebony and Reona are dead, but they don't know the difference in body death and true death. Should we have Ebony speak to them, or remain silent? Oceanis said, frowning. She could see how miserable the two younglings were upon hearing of Ebony's death and she didn't want to leave them like that, but she wasn't entirely sure they were ready to learn of Eldunari either. Raven, what should we do? she asked her Rider.

Raven glanced over at the young Pair, her face an emotionless mask concealing her thoughts. Eldunari are in the area of draconic expertise. I say it is up to the dragons to decide, or at the very least Felecia and Ebony, she said pensively. She didn't like the thought of such a young Rider knowing about Eldunari, but she didn't see how they could keep it from him either, not in such a small group.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Ebony half listened to the conversation through Felecia, feeling an ache in his chest, although there was no chest for him to feel an ache in, nonetheless, he felt it. Careful to avoid Tobias and Avalon's minds, he contacted Raven and Oceanus. All dragons know of the Eldunari instinctively, it is a part of who we are. Like a stomach or liver in a twoleg, it is part of us, so we are aware of it of course, even if we perhaps do not know the importance of it right away. Avalon knows of his, even if he hasn't told Tobias. He just did not realize I might have used it in this situation. Both of them have seen much, and truly, Avalon is possibly as old as Saphira is, and she knows of the importance of the Eldunari. In such dark times, I am surprised Equinox did not tell them of it, if not just to bring attention to how important it is to keep Avalon's Heart of Hearts safe. Their hearts are gentle, they are eager to learn, and I trust them. They deserve to know, if nothing else, so they are not weighed with guilt. he said softly. Felecia hesitated, having heard him as well, then nodded slightly. Ebony prummed, then reached out and touched the minds of the young pair. Oi, dead in body does not mean I'm so easy to get rid of. What do you two think I am, a mouse, to let such a tiny thing as death take me away from my friends? I'm a dragon for goodness sake, I don't let anything defeat me. Now lift those spirits of yours before I kick them up. he huffed indignantly, and if he had had a body his eyes would have been sparkling with mischief. Reona started in now. Oh yeah you couldn't just die and leave me in peace all by myself in here. Although if you had died I would have to, so I'm good with that.[/i] he griped.

Post Re: Safe Haven
Toby started, his hand jerking against Jeta's chin when he heard Ebony's voice in his head, followed by Reona's surly tones. He looked around his eyes wide with surprise. Am I going crazy? he asked, shock coloring the bright, innocent white tones of his mind. Ebony, Reona, is it really you? he asked.

Avalon frowned, looking Felecia up and down. No Toby, you're not going crazy, I think I know what's going on, but, how? You couldn't be carrying it with you, Ebony's would be much too large, it would stick out like a sore thumb, he said, twisting his head this way and that to look the Rider over from all angles. She wasn't carrying a pack with any abnormal bulges.

I am glad you told them, Oceanis said to Ebony privately, humming deep in her chest. It is really them Tobias. I will let Ebony explain, since he has more invested in this than I, she said, smiling at how happy his mind sounded.
