Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
OOC: Hey, people! If, by chance, any of you read the post A Cold Beginning and you wonder what was Hobsyllwin like before she turned out to be such a grouch, then here's a little something I whipped up. This is Hobsyllwin's past, right at the time when she's captured. I know I explain her history under her bio, but I thought it would be kind of cool to read about it. So, here's the beginning!
IC:
I
Hobsyllwin flew over the mountains, the cold air rushing over her as she dived up and down through the clouds with glee. She had just taught herself how to fly, and oh the joys of not having to walk and the feeling of being free! Her spirit soared with her as she twirled and flipped, laughing. It was easy to be optimistic on a day like this. The sun was shining brightly, the birds were singing below her, and there was no one else in her sight for miles around. Never in her life did she feel so happy. If this was what flying was like, then she never wanted to stop! Of course, her energy was beginning to wane. After all, she was an inexperienced flyer. But her limits never discouraged her curiosity. She would just go flying after she had a rest, and perhaps a good meal to replenish her.
Syllwin found a secluded spot just in the middle of a forest near the Spine. It was grassy and sunny, the perfect spot to rest up. It would be private enough to keep herself hidden from other dragons flying by, if by chance they would. She landed clumsily, nearly hitting a group of young saplings surrounding the clearing, and folded her wings in neatly. She lifted her head and gave a whiff towards the air that surrounded her. Anything that was available for prey was gone. The scents of deer and other animals was stale, but there was something else…Syllwin couldn’t figure it out. There was a scent that was like fear scent, but what could have possibly scared away all the prey in the forest? Unless…
Syllwin checked her bearings, hoping to find the source of frightening the prey. She couldn’t find anything that disturbed the natural setting, until she looked at the ground near the edge of the small clearing. There were dozens upon dozens of human footprints imprinted into the dirt. Fear drilled into her heart. She had never seen a human before, and she certainly didn’t want to meet one.
She sniffed at the tracks, hoping that they were stale just like the scent of the prey, but to her dismay, they were only half a day old. She lifted her head back up with a jerk as she heard something rustle in the trees behind her. Syllwin whipped around to catch her attacker by surprise, only to find nothing there. Another rustle startled her, making her twist her head around in all directions of the forest. The sounds were making her paranoid, perhaps they were natural sounds and she was just frightened. Syllwin decided that she’d better find another spot before she went mad with paranoia. She lifted her wings a little, ready for takeoff, when creatures came from out of the shadows and began their attack. They were two-legged, and they seemed to match the footprints on the ground. Were these humans?
But they’re so small, she growled with disgust. Why was I so worried?
Syllwin didn’t realize how wrong she was. In a matter of minutes, they covered her, stabbing her with their spears and puncturing her side. She let out a pained roar and tried to shake them off. She was, however, too small to take them all on by herself, at least, for a dragon. Syllwin had managed to pull out some spears, but there were too many humans. They just managed to get her pinned to the ground before they covered her with a net. One of the humans blindfolded her, cutting off her sense of direction. Blood loss was making her dizzy, and the last thing Syllwin remembered was the sound of beating wings.

Thanks, Draco. I've been working on II, so I'll post it here pretty soon, hopefully. Glad you like it!

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
II
Hobsyllwin felt numbness seep into her body through her unconsciousness. She felt the sense of falling even though she was lying in one spot. Syllwin decided to open her eyes to get her confused feelings out of the way. She blinked a couple of times and hesitated. Then she opened them. Darkness was all that she could see. She figured they had kept her blindfolded. That was when she realized that she wasn’t blindfolded; it was just dark. Her eyes just needed to adjust to the lighting. Once they had, she found herself in an enclosed cave with a blocked entrance. The only source of air was a hole in the wall that led to outside. It was too small for Syllwin to fit through, however.
Syllwin scratched at the walls, smelling and searching for a way out. If those humans think they could keep her caged up, they had another thing coming. She was angry enough to attack anything that came at her now, and she wasn’t going to go down without a fight. She couldn’t help but admit that she was a little puzzled. Why in the world would these humans want an ordinary dragoness like herself and then capture her?
She was about to get her answer. The cave opened, a secret door, which blended in with the cave, went up. It startled her, and she ended up backing up into the wall behind her. Two humans approached her with long spears and they were dressed in armor that would have shined had there been more sunlight. Another human came in, holding a torch in one hand and stood next to the door. They stood next to a human who was dressed in robes, and an odd aura rolled off him like nothing Syllwin felt before. His eyes glinted coldly over her before he whispered to the human holding the torch.
“We captured this young dragoness resting in a clearing near the Spine, my lord,” the human said. “She was easy pickings; hardly put up a decent fight.”
Syllwin narrowed her eyes at him with a smug grin. You wouldn’t be saying that if you faced me alone, coward.
The human with robes looked up at Syllwin again, this time with interest. “Hmm, she has quite a temper. And I can see why you were so quick to snatch her,” he added with a small smile. Syllwin couldn’t help but shiver at him. “I am definitely interested to see how she develops. Look there, her eye changes color. I wonder…”
He stepped closer to Syllwin, and she shrunk back. There was something about this male human that restrained her from defending herself. He possessed magic, a powerful and deadly magic at that. All she wanted to do was get out of there alive, so she figured if she could somehow come to an agreement with this human, she could leave.
Look, there’s obviously been some mistake. Can’t we come to some agreement so I can go? She suggested in a friendly tone.
The human stroked his chin for a moment. “Alright,” he said after a while. “But, my lord!” one of his men protested.
“If the dragoness is willing to leave, I don’t see why I can’t pull something together so that she can help me,” he cut in. “I have no complaints. What is your name?” he asked, directing his question to Syllwin.
Hobsyllwin, she replied, sitting up a little straighter.
“I am called Galbatorix,” the human said, bowing his head a little. “Perhaps you heard of me?”
I’m afraid not, Syllwin admitted. I’ve lived on my own, and I’ve never heard of anyone by your name before.
“That’s perfectly fine,” he insisted. “Now, I know that my men have caught you without an explanation, but see, there’s a reason why it was done.”
Why is that?
“Dragons who possess certain…traits tend to overstep their bounds,” Galbatorix murmured. “Do you understand my meaning?”
Not exactly, I’m afraid, Syllwin replied, shrugging.
“Some of your kind has been known to get reckless,” he explained patiently. “These dragons with powers, they think they can come in and do whatever they please without worrying about the consequences. They think they have the power to do whatever they want, whenever they want.”
Well, that’s a little rude on the dragons’ part.
“It is,” Galbatorix agreed. “That’s why you were captured, you see. Your eye changes color with your mood, am I correct?”
I guess, Syllwin muttered. I’ve never really noticed until you said something. But what does that have to do with…?
“Dragons with odd traits tend to possess odd powers,” he stated simply. “But it appears I was mistaken. This is our agreement; you help me get what I want and I’ll help you get what you want.”
Which is…?
“It’s your freedom, of course. Once you help me gain my goal, I will let you fly away, no questions asked.”
Just like that?
“Precisely.”
Syllwin thought it over for a moment. This Galbatorix seemed to mean what he said, especially since he seemed like he would keep his word. Plus, she would gain her freedom, and then she could fly home without worrying about anyone ever again. It sounded as good of a deal as any.
Okay, Galbatorix, Syllwin gave in, what do you need help with?
Galbatorix grinned. “You’ll see soon, my young dragoness. Very soon indeed.”

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
III
Syllwin spend the next couple of months with Galbatorix, learning techniques of battle she had never come across before. She was training with Galbatorix’s dragon, which taught her the basics of fighting. Syllwin even discovered her breath; ice. She was expecting fire, but she was from the north. She was probably an ice drgaon. Galbatorix never spent time talking to Syllwin; he was always busy with ‘other matters’, as he had put it. She had to stay in the cave she was put in, unless she was going to eat or train. Otherwise, this was where she spent the remainder of her time.
Syllwin, during the time of her stay, has learned that Galbatorix was a king in a part of Alagesia. He had a kingdom set up, and he was getting settled for a couple of years, when dragons of certain status didn’t like the fact that a human king was ruling their land. Instead of finding some kind of treaty, the dragons attacked Galbatorix with their powers, and tried to kill him. He had magic of his own, so he was able to ward off the dragons. They continue to come, and there’s no way to stop them. Galbatorix is forced to keep them from invading with only the power he possesses, but sometimes it’s not enough. He loses a lot of men and it’s a devastating loss. Syllwin felt a twinge of sympathy for the king. He was working hard to provide for his human people and the dragons only got in the way. However, she couldn’t help but feel support for her fellow dragons. After all, they were kin. She knew that she would fee torn, but right now, Galbatorix was keeping her in his castle so it was best to find a way out and soon.
But after waiting for a long time, Syllwin began to wonder why Galbatorix was doing all these things. If he wanted her help, wouldn’t he have her complete the task right away instead of waiting? And wouldn’t he have her stay in a place that wasn’t so dreary and cold? If she wasn’t a prisoner, what was she?
Syllwin got up from the ground when Galbatorix came into the room, alone this time. Perhaps he didn’t need his guards. After all, they were acquaintances.
“Today’s the big day, Hobsyllwin,” he greeted her, a triumphant smile spread across his face. “I will be acquiring your assistance, and then you are free to go.”
I have been waiting for two months, so am I allowed to know what you plan to do? Syllwin demanded impatiently.
“There’s a dragon on my wanted list,” he explained, pacing slowly back and forth. “He’s the one who mainly leads a small group of talented dragons. He possesses extreme power, and if I don’t destroy him quickly, he will destroy me.”
What do you expect me to do? Syllwin asked, snapping her jaws in anticipation. I can’t go and find this dragon for you. I don’t know anyone of my kind except for me.
Galbatorix turned to her. “I don’t need you to go find him.”
Syllwin cocked her head with confusion at him. If you don’t need me to find this dragon, then why are you telling me this?
He motioned for her to follow him out of the cave and out into a giant hall. Syllwin followed him down the corridor and to a left. She was never allowed to go down this specific hall, especially since she was too busy with training and those kinds of things. It was a first for her. As they continued down the hall, it became more grotesque and colorless. It surprised her that Galbatorix didn’t bother decorating this part of his castle. It didn’t make any sense. Nothing made sense to Syllwin anymore, in fact.
They came to a large wooden door just at the end of this hall, a roar ringing out to Syllwin. Galbatorix opened the door without looking back at her. Inside was a circular room with the stench of blood, decay, and ash. Syllwin looked around in horror at the mechanisms Galbatorix held in his possession. They were all torturing devices. In the middle of the room, chained to the center was a large navy-colored dragon. He seemed to be about a few years older than Syllwin, and he had silver eyes that flashed with pain as a human next to him stabbed him in the foreleg with a spear. Syllwin could feel his pain, and couldn’t help but flinch. This was the first dragon she had ever seen up-close, and this wasn’t what she had expected.
“This is what I want,” Galbatorix said after a few minutes of silence between them. “I want this dragon, Leonyx, dead. He’s the one who’s been destroying my armies and trying to keep the humans from settling here.” He looked at Syllwin expectantly. “I want you to be the one to send him into the gods’ hands.”
Syllwin started at the dragon with horror. She couldn’t possibly believe Galbatorix wanted her to kill one of her own kind! Her heart enveloped into a twisted knot of pain and her stomach clenched uncomfortably. She couldn’t possibly do it!
“You’ve proven yourself worthy to me over these past few months,” Galbatorix said, alluring, as he circled the dragon called Leonyx. “Now you’re being put to the test. If you can kill him, you are welcomed here whenever you wish. I will have your lessons in battle training advanced and you can help defend my castle. A dragoness like you will surely become a great adversary to any dragon who should come past here.”
Syllwin looked from Galbatorix to Leonyx, indecision warring in her head. She looked at the ground, not sure on what to do. Galbatorix had given her so much, and now he was planning to have her kill one of her own kind! What kind of a deal was this?
Traitor! Leonyx roared, glaring at Syllwin with complete hatred and distrust. How can you do this?
“You’re confused?” Galbatorix murmured smoothly. Syllwin looked up at him with wide eyes. “Yes, I know what you’re feeling; I’ve been studying your behavioral patterns and the colors that change in that blue eye. Green means you’re confused. What is there to be confused about?”
You…you said I could leave…
“If you help me,” he interceded. “Either you help me for your freedom or refuse and end up as my prisoner for life.”
Syllwin shook her head. There must be something else; I can’t kill a dragon. It goes against everything I stand for!
Galbatorix stood there, a dangerous look crossing his expression. “I guess you’re right. How can I ask you to kill one of your own out of the blue? How about this:”
He waved his arm over towards his guards, who brought a boy in about the age of 17. The boy was brutally beaten. He was dressed in rags, his hair a mess. He was struggling under the guards’ grip, though it was useless. His feet dragged along the floor until he was brought right in front of Syllwin.
“Kill this boy, and I will let you go. That is my final offer,” Galbatorix stated, crossing his arms and sitting down on his throne. “Do this, and you are free.”
Syllwin looked over at Galbatorix suspiciously. That’s it? All I have to do is kill a human?
“That’s all, unless, it will be too difficult for you,” he taunted. “After all, he is a wanted criminal and deserves an execution.”
Syllwin stood up straighter, glowering down at the boy. If he’s a criminal, then yes, I will do it.
She stood up, pulling her head back a little. She was summoning her ice breath, to encase the boy within an icy prison. A chilled breath came from her mouth, the coldness tingling the tip of her tongue. Just as it hit the boy, Leonyx was screaming in terror.
No! No, leave him alone! Don’t kill him! he pleaded. Please, I beg you!
It was too late; the terrible deed was committed. The boy shivered a few times before he was encased in a block of ice. Leonyx stared at the boy in complete horror.
What have you done? You…you killed us both! Leonyx cried, struggling with the chains to get free, but he failed. His breathing was becoming ragged and his lids were drooping.
What’s happening to Leonyx? Syllwin demanded. What is so special about this boy? She whirled on Galbatorix. What did you do?
“What indeed?” Galbatorix countered. “I did nothing. It was all your doing. You killed the rider of this dragon, resulting Leonyx to die along with him.
W-what? I don’t understand! Syllwin exclaimed, shocked.
“A rider can be human or elf or any other being,” Galbatorix laughed. “They bond with a dragon, and are together always until one of them dies. If one of them dies, the other dies shortly after...usually. You just executed well-wanted criminals without me lifting a finger!” he cackled.
Syllwin was mortified. She had never heard of a rider before. And what Galbatorix said… But…but, you promised!
“Oh, what is a promise nowadays?” Galbatorix barked. “Guards, lock these three in the dungeon. See to it that Hobsyllwin doesn’t escape. The dragon will die soon, leave him in there with his rider.”
Syllwin felt ropes wrapping around her, pulling her to the ground. She roared in agony as the guards stabbed her and cut her with their spears and the rope.
What about our deal? Syllwin shrieked as she was being blindfolded again. She was seething with rage, so much that she couldn't find the right curse to call him. You dirty, rotten - ! You’ll pay! I swear that so long as I breathe I will spend my remaining days trying to kill you! I’ll get even with you! Watch your back, Galbatorix! Your head is mine!
“Oh, every dragon that I’ve met ends up saying something like that,” Galbatorix cackled. “You’re no different. You’re weak; just like the rest I’ve kept and used for my armies.”
Syllwin felt the darkness close in around her mind and her heart. Betrayal stung worse than any of the ropes or spears. It wasn’t the betrayal made by Galbatorix; it was the betrayal she committed against one of her own kind. She could, would, never forgive herself for what she done. She welcomed anything that happened to her; it didn’t matter anymore.

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
This story's getting good, Astral. Poor Syll! Tricked into killing another dragon!
Hey, I've noticed people making this mistake a lot because of the movie; but in the book it doesn't say anything about dragons dying when their rider dies. It just says that if either partner dies, the other usually doesn't survive, but it actually doesn't matter which partner it is. The dragon could have survived, though probably not.
Of course, it's not your fault for not realizing this. I actually reread Eragon very carefully just for that sole purpose, to see if it actually said that. And you know what? It didn't! Those dumb movie people were making dragons look weak! Grr!
But anyway, good story so far!

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
Oh, thanks for pointing out my mistake, Draco! I'll have to go back and fix that. Perhaps their bond is so strong, that Leonyx is dying because of that special bond. Oh well, I'll come up with something. Yes, I quite agree, that is absolutely frustrating! I didn't realize that the movie did that! I guess I'll have to alter the story a little. Sorry about that. And of course, Syll would have never agreed to these terms if she knew it was going to involve killing a dragon. This is where her trust issues come into play. Later in our trend, there's going to be a part where Syllwin doesn't explain her past, but she's going to tell Phalynx and Bahamut that she can't be around them because of the mistakes she made in her past. She feels she'll lose their trust and the friendship that's just starting to build. But I'm glad it's enjoyable, and I'm going back right now to go edit those mistakes the stupid movie made!

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
That's fine, I've seen literally a ton of people make that mistake, because the movie messed it up. But if your partner is killed, there's like an 80% chance that you'll die to, so the dragon in your story dying is to be expected. You don't have to change that part, just what Galbatorix said.
lol, Dragons rock!!! Syllwin especially!!
btw, do you like my new siggy? It has most of the pictures of Phal that I could find.
lol, back on topic: Keep writing!

lol, thanks. And yeah, I love it! I PMed you about it. I only have about a quarter of IV written, so I'm going to go work on that while I check out other things. Really? That many people? Holy cow! Hmm...well, at least now I know!

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
IV
Syllwin woke up to find herself in the same dungeon that she had been spending her time in for the past few months. She shook herself and then winced in pain. She looked at her side and forgotten the wounds that were inflicted on her…who knows how long ago. She stood and began tending to the ones that were more serious by licking. It was the best she could do; she knew no magic, at least to her knowledge.
She looked around and found Leonyx lying next to his rider, his sides heaving slowly and his breath ragged. She couldn’t help but feel completely responsible for the situation that this poor dragon was now in.
Leonyx? she whispered, taking a step closer to the dragon cautiously.
Stay away, traitor, Leonyx hissed; lifting his head weakly to glare at her with such malice, Syllwin couldn’t stop from flinching. This is your fault; I can’t believe you were listening to that dictator! he spat before letting his head fall to his claws.
Leonyx, I know this may be hard for you to believe, but I was only here for a few months, Syllwin explained gently. I didn’t know about Galbatorix; I didn’t even know about riders! I’m a nomad who lived out in the mountains. I was isolated from everyone, including my own kind, she whispered. I would have never killed your rider if I’d known he shared some special bond with you.
Save it, Leonyx growled. I don’t want to hear any excuses you give me. You killed out of selfishness towards your own safety. You weren’t thinking about anyone but yourself!
Syllwin felt stung by the dragon’s words, but she knew he was right. It was only an act of selfishness for her freedom. She didn’t even think about the consequences that could have happened if she would have stopped herself from killing the boy.
The boy…
Wait, how can you still be alive if your rider is dead? Syllwin asked.
That’s none of your - Leonyx paused. Wait, you’re right. He stood up a little. I feel…weak; dying. But…I’m alive. That means…
Didn’t Galbatorix say if a partner dies, the other one usually doesn’t survive? Syllwin pointed out mildly.
Yes, that’s right. Leonyx looked at Syllwin with hope. Do you think your ice breath just…?
Preserved him? she finished the sentence for him. I’m not sure, but it seems like it. I don’t know my ice breath all that well; I only know how to use it. I guess I can control the temperature of coldness within my breath.
Leonyx closed his eyes, a tear trickling down his face. Thank the gods!
I think I can save him, Syllwin said, walking over towards Leonyx’s rider. All I need to do,
Stay away from him, Leonyx snarled. You’ve caused enough damage! I’m looking out for my own rider! If you come so much as a paw step, I will shred you into pieces!
Yeah, like you have the strength to do that! Syllwin snapped sarcastically. Look, I can help him, you can’t. I’m going to crack open the ice case and heat him up with my body heat. If I don’t you both die. Don’t you want to save your rider? Or are you acting selfishly too?
Leonyx glared at her another moment before giving in. Fine, but I’m watching you.
Syllwin nodded. Don’t worry, she whispered. I know I’ve made mistakes in the past, but I know I can fix them to prevent them happening in the future. I know who Galbatorix really is now; I’ve seen the lies he’s filled my head with, and I know that why the dragons do what they do. I know what side I’m on: the side of justice. * * * Syllwin had sat for five hours after cracking the ice case carefully under the watchful eye of Leonyx, and curled around the boy to reheat his body so he wouldn’t capture hypothermia. Leonyx wanted to do it himself, but Syllwin insisted he get his rest. The dragon and his rider were alive now, and it wouldn’t do the rider any good for him if he woke up and his dragon was dead, following his own death. Leonyx didn’t protest anymore, and slipped into a deep slumber.
Syllwin, at first, felt the boy’s body convulse with shivers as it tried to warm itself up. Later, however, his heartbeat began to return to normal and the shivering had ceased. Suddenly, she felt the boy stir underneath her wing. She lifted it to find him sitting up, stretching and yawning.
“What happened?” he mumbled, rubbing his eyes. “I had the weirdest dream…”
Are you all right? Syllwin asked the boy with concern.
“Yeah, I think so…” The boy paused. “Wait a minute; I know you!” He stood up quickly. “You tried to kill me!”
Syllwin made no move to go after him. She just looked at him with deep regret. It’s true, but Galbatorix fed me lies, and I believed him, she said with disgust. I never wanted it to end like this, but my trust in anyone has led us here. I hope you can forgive me for encasing you in that ice, but I was able to crack it open and heat you back up.
The boy scratched his head as he listened to Syllwin’s tale. He shook his head in disbelief. “That’s weird. But if what you say is true, I believe it. Galbatorix will do anything to get what he wants, and that includes lying and blackmailing.”
What’s your name? Syllwin asked.
“Aron,” the boy answered. “What about yours?”
Hobsyllwin, she replied, but you may call me Syllwin. I don’t really care for my full name.
“Well, I can’t say that I trust you completely, but I do want to thank you for saving me and Leonyx,” Aron said, bowing. “I thank you.”
Leonyx stirred in his sleep before opening his eyes.
Good news, Leonyx, Syllwin said, grinning hopefully at the dragon, Aron is awake.
Leonyx’s eyes widened completely as he looked at Aron with excitement. Aron! He exclaimed. You’re okay!
“Thanks to Syllwin,” Aron explained. “I can’t thank her enough for not killing me. I feel grateful, even though I doubt her loyalties. How are you, Leo?”
Leonyx shrugged. I’ve had worse. It’s good to see that you are well. Leonyx turned to Syllwin. I thank you…uh…
Syllwin will do.
Syllwin. Thank you for not letting us die. I guess you’re not all that bad. And what I can see from Aron’s memories that you are semi-trustworthy and you did seem to mean what you said about killing Galbatorix; one of your eyes turned black as pitch.
Syllwin bowed her head in shame. I don’t deserve your trust. I nearly killed you both, and for what? To save myself? Galbatorix wasn’t going to let me leave, not by a long shot. I should have seen that coming. Yet I let myself believe that I could trust the word of a complete stranger. I have never felt so stupid and hurt at the same time.
Leonyx and Aron looked at each other.
I assume if you were still a traitor, you would have let us perish, Leonyx admitted.
“It’s in the past now,” Aron dismissed it. “What’s done is done. But now what? We’re stuck in Galbatorix’s dungeon with no hope of escaping. He’s not going to just let us walk out of here with a skip and a hop. And why would he dump us in the dungeon with you, Syllwin, if he knew we were dead? There would be no point in keeping us there. No, he must want us for something.”
You are wanted criminals, Syllwin whispered.
“Not just that,” Aron said, looking back at Leonyx. “But Leo here can heal wounds with just a thought; nothing else is required.”
Syllwin looked at Leonyx. Is this true?
Yes, he replied, still looking at Syllwin warily. But it takes a lot of my strength away. I only perform it when absolutely necessary. “Galbatorix knows Leo is something special, and he thinks that way about you, Syllwin,” Aron stated. “Otherwise, why would he keep a dragon here? Alive?”
You make a valid point, Syllwin agreed. But all I have is my ice breath and the color changing of my eyes. There’s nothing special about me in any case. Leonyx remained silent while Aron sat down next to him, thinking it seemed like.
Syllwin didn’t wait for either of them to reply; she just lay her head down on her claws and curled up in the corner of the small cave. She closed her eyes with a heavy heart. She may have gotten on Leonyx’s and Aron’s good side, but she had yet to gain their trust. She wasn’t surprised they had none for her. She wouldn’t have trusted herself in that case. Her only hope was that they stuck together so they could make it through this capture together.

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
V
Nearly a full year had passed since the incident where Syllwin was willing to kill someone to save herself. She, Aron, and Leonyx were separated into different holding facilities so they couldn’t communicate with each other. A spell was placed in the walls so thought-speak wasn’t able to penetrate it. She had never felt more alone, even when she was in the mountains by her lone self. She could never get over how Galbatorix betrayed her, and she couldn’t believe how despicable he was in general. To kill a dragon because he was protesting: how unthinkable! It twisted her stomach painfully when she reminded herself that she had almost become like him. She couldn’t believe that her stupidity and easy trust blinded her to the real world and the evil behind a so-called kind face.
Day after day, month after month, someone would come in with torture devices. The weapons the humans used were able to pierce through her scales, poisoning her system slowly so she wasn’t able to move. The humans then used electricity magic to shock her until she could barely stand it. Syllwin demanded an explanation as to why she was being tortured, only to receive more beatings. She endured the pain in silence, hoping to figure out why this was happening to her. There was something else that was happening to Syllwin; she was losing herself. Before, she was optimistic, and she embraced life with a smile and a spring in her step. Before, she loved to just look through the joys of life and run them through her head. Now, Syllwin felt her heart chipping with sharp edges of anger and hurt with the scars carved forever within her soul, making her thoughts darker and tempered. Now, she was drowning in her sorrow and her opinions on life changed drastically. She was negative, and she wasn’t exactly ecstatic about much anymore. Distrust seeped into her subconscious and paranoia kept her on edge. She was a thinker now, and she certainly wasn’t going to head into a dangerous situation without a plan. Anyone who were to talk to her would end up getting the cold shoulder. She had no interest in making friends or anything of that sort. She was planning to live alone; that is, if she ever escaped. But there was something else that burned within all her rage; she felt vengeance and hope. She still had hope that she could get out of this dank hole and seek vengeance for all those who were good who fell by Galbatorix’s hand. Syllwin knew that there wasn’t much hope; the dungeon was about as escapable as a steel cage with a lock.
Finally, after nearly ten months of the endless beatings, Syllwin was brought to Galbatorix in shackles. He sat on his throne, with a smug grin on his face.
“Greetings, Syllwin. How have you been fairing?”
You twisted, evil man, Syllwin growled. You don’t even comprehend how I feel at this very moment. You’ve never experienced true pain and guilt. How would you know how I’ve been fairing?
Galbatorix didn’t answer. He got up from his chair and began to pace around Syllwin, staring at her hungrily like a jeweler looking at a rare and precious stone. “You may be right about that, young dragon. I don’t know how you’re feeling, and quite honestly, I don’t care in the least.”
Why did you bring me here? Syllwin demanded. And why have you been beating me? Are you trying to kill me?
“If I wanted you dead, I would have made sure your death was excruciatingly more painful than the torture I ordered. It would have been slow, and I would have been watching,” he murmured pleasantly. “No, I’ve been keeping you alive for a soul purpose. I wanted to see if you’ve broken yet.”
What do you mean?
“I find that torturing dragons not only gives me pleasure, it gives me another valuable soldier in my army. I was trying to see if the beatings turned you. Sometimes a dragon will become so emotionally unstable, they will turn to the dark side, with no hope in becoming good.”
You vile excuse for a creature, Syllwin spat. I will never turn. I will endure your tortures in silence; I will never break, she promised. There is no way I could ever become a traitor to my own kind.
“Hmm…you’ve lasted longer than some of the dragons I’ve had tortured,” Galbatorix muttered thoughtfully. “Perhaps you need more intense…procedures.”
In Syllwin’s mind, she cringed at the awfulness behind those words. She couldn’t possibly handle anymore, not after endless poisoning and electrocuting. If she could, she’d attack Galbatorix right then and there, but of course, he was too strong. She would need more help.
If only I were a little stronger, she thought miserably, maybe I could defeat him.
Suddenly, something clicked in her mind. It had nothing to do with strength. Did Galbatorix use his own strength to capture Syllwin? Did he use brutality to make her almost kill Leonyx and Aron? No! It had all been trickery! He had used wits to confuse her and almost turn her to the dark side. She had suddenly realized that in order to escape from this dreadful place, she would have to trick the trickster.
You know, you’re right, Syllwin said, as coldly as she could. It might take everything that you have to break me, but seeing as there’s no escape from this place, I guess I could turn in. You know, join by choice.
Galbatorix’s eyes glimmered with shock, but he hid it well behind a cool expression. “Oh? You’ve suddenly changed your mind?”
There’s no point in trying to fight when you can’t win, Syllwin admitted, shrugging. What else can I do? I will hate every single second spending my time in this place, but I know I can’t come out victorious.
“I’m glad to see you’ve decided to give up,” Galbatorix said approvingly. “You’ve made an excellent choice; I will make a fine warrior out of you yet.”
Syllwin nodded, hoping against hope that her plan would work. Something in the back of her mind told her it would work; a mystical aura was building up and it was about time to let it out. Galbatorix never knew what she could do, only that her eye changes color. She could somehow see what she was suppressing mentally. It would take a lot of her strength, but if it worked, it would be worth it.
She thought of Leonyx and Aron, and what they looked. She could see them in perfect detail; Leonyx’s silver eyes and dark blue scales, Aron’s black hair and brown eyes with his rags. Every hair on his head would be messy, and his eyes had black bags under his eyes from the lack of sleep. She could see them now; it was exactly as if they were standing in front of her. Suddenly, something glowed behind her eyes, and she was seeing the outline of them when she closed her eyes. Then she could see them running down the hall towards the exit of the castle…
“My lord!!!” Syllwin heard some humans scream. “My lord, the prisoners are escaping!”
Galbatorix rushed towards the hall, looking around, a growl rising from his throat. “What prisoners? How did they manage to escape?” he demanded.
“It’s the dragon and his rider,” the captain explained quickly, running towards Galbatorix. “I don’t know how they managed it, but they’re making a break for it!”
The captain led Galbatorix out of the room, Syllwin listening to Galbatorix grumbling something as he rushed off with glee before she felt her legs waver and her breathing quicken. Some kind of spell drained her of her strength. But it didn’t matter; it was all the distraction she needed. This is my chance, Syllwin thought to herself. I can get out of here! The thought of freedom just within her grasp had her tingling with excitement and sweet victory. She knew if she can get in the air, they have no hope of finding her. It would take them a while to figure out she had escaped.
Syllwin clawed at the ropes that had her tied down until she was completely maneuverable and she took off running out of the hall and towards a different exit that only Galbatorix and a few of his cronies knew about. Syllwin had followed them one day when they were delivering a message. If she made it out of there, she was home free. But in order to do that, she would have to pass the prisoner cells. It chilled her to the bone, but she would have to swallow her fear and just deal with it. As Syllwin passed by, she heard someone whispering her name. She looked to her left and realized Aron was looking out of one of the holes within the door, glancing around nervously.
“Syl, what’s going on?” he asked. “What’s all the commotion?”
Let’s just say…I’ve discovered a different power, she said mysteriously. Then she realized something. Aron and Leonyx were still trapped; the fake ones were running around somewhere. She knew that she had to help them escape. She wasn’t about to make the same mistake again. I’m going to get you out.
“How?” Aron wondered. “There’s no key! And the door’s extremely strong, so a dragon can’t get out of it.”
Syllwin shrugged. They’ve weakened us, so we weren’t able to use any breath-power. Maybe my ice can help. Stand back.
Aron disappeared from the door as Syllwin took a deep breath and breathed on the door. Ice crystals shot from her mouth, forming on the door and seeping into the rock it was so cold. Syllwin lifted her tail and smashed it against the wall. It shattered in, the whole wall nearly crumbling.
“Holy…” Aron breathed as he and Leonyx got out.
Hurry, there’s not much time, Syllwin urged them. They would have heard the crash. They’ll be here any minute. You must get out of here; I’m afraid I can’t help you out from here.
Why did you save us? Leonyx wondered with awe. You could have escaped.
I almost let you die the first time, Syllwin stated simply. I wasn’t about to let you die a second time.
Leonyx nodded. Thank you, Syllwin. I will not forget your brave act.
Syllwin watched as Leonyx and Aron disappeared around the corner, knowing she would probably not see them ever again.

Oo, nice chapter, Astral! I liked how you captured the "end of innocence" thing, and your writing was very lovely in this part! Keep it up!

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
Thank you, Draco! I very much appreciate your comment! I'm working on VI as we speak, and I'm also reading the rest of Phalynx's story too. Hopefully, I can get it done by tomorrow.

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
Sorry this is shorter than all the others, but I couldn’t drag it out without it being redundant. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the last chapter in Syllwin’s beginning.
VI
Syllwin knew she had to escape before Galbatorix figured out he had been tricked. She decided to go out the main gate so Galbatorix wouldn’t see the real Leonyx and Aron. Two dragons would be more of a distraction than one. Despite his gullibility, he was clever. She knew very well that in any case, he would hunt her down and punish her severely. She decided that now wasn’t time to linger and think about what was possibly could happen. If she did, then her worst fears would come true. She had to get a move on.
She heard strange shrieks as she began to run through the familiar halls towards the exit. She didn’t know the strange creatures that were following her, but their souls were tainted with evil and darkness. There was no way she would let herself be caught. Syllwin pushed herself on.
Syllwin felt her energy restore from the magic that she used. Somehow, she knew that the illusion she cast was disintegrated. Now there was no time. She hurried on until she found the main gate of the castle, the creatures closing in on her. She heard Galbatorix’s angry shouts and orders, which made her heart, beat faster in fear. Syllwin didn’t dare look back in case it slowed her down. She instead faced the gate head-on, her escape just within her grasp.
“Stop that conniving dragon!” Galbatorix roared, using his own magic to shoot bolts of electricity out of his hands at her. “I want her back in her prison!”
Syllwin’s breathing began to quicken along with her frightened heart as she hurried her legs out of the exit. She could see the guards in the yard coming at her with swords and bow and arrows; thousands of them. They were blocking her only path.
Or had they?
It had been so long since Syllwin had flown…her wings wouldn’t be used to it, and she had grown since she was captured. Her newly-grown wings were much larger, but would she able to use them? There was only one way to find out.
Syllwin started to run faster and faster as she spread her wings out to catch the wind. The soldiers were ready with their weapons, their expressions determined. Syllwin hoped it would work. She began to flap her wings as she took a few hopping steps. Slowly, she took off into the air, just barely grazing the top of the guards’ heads. They tried to stab at her with their spears, but missed. Syllwin was beginning to gather speed and altitude. Her wings were sore and she felt heavy in the sky. She knew that it had been longer than what she thought, but if she was going to escape, she was going to have to pull her inner strength out from within.
This is one dragon you’ll never keep prisoner! She roared, her roar echoing across the castle yard.
Galbatorix watched with enraged eyes as Syllwin made her escape. “You’ve made an enemy for life, dragon!” he shouted back. “One day, I’ll find you, and the days you knew as torture will be days of paradise compared to what awaits you!”
I don’t care, Syllwin thought to herself as she gained altitude high above the castle and into the clouds. Even if it means that Galbatorix will try to find and kill me, I would fight against him. I won’t make the same mistakes. I’ve learned from them.
Syllwin flew high past the cloud-line and farther up than most dragons ever could. She let the emotion of flying overtake her as she remembered the days when she was innocent and knew of no evil.
But all that has changed. Syllwin was a different dragon now, not as innocent as she once was. She knew what the real world was like now, and she knew what lay in store for her if she ever came across such evil again. Syllwin knew that there could never truly be a part of her that could ever relive the days when she didn’t know the existence of Galbatorix.
Syllwin flew over the Spine then, finding the air brisk and fierce than what she was used to. If she was going to make a home, it might as well be here.
I’m an ice dragon anyway, she thought to herself as she descended upon the land. I know that I can’t trust another living soul. This is where I live and this is where I shall be for evermore.
END
…Or is it?

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
Yay! The end--but not really!! lol
I liked your little ending, Astral, even though it was kind of short. It was nicely written.
Well, I think we know where this story is headed next: a few years of relative peace and then BAM!! Phalynx shows up and your peace is ended, mwahahaha! (Phal tends to be where there's action, lol)
Anyway, I liked this little snippet of Syll's past. It's nice to have some insight on the characters beyond their bios.

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
Thank you so much for your comments, Draco! It's nice to hear that. Yes...hopefully the continuation of Syllwin will be as exciting as Phal's. Probably not, but you never know... Maybe Icsys or Elcyon will have some fun too, once I introduce them of course. Which name do you like better; Icsys or Elcyon?

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
Why thank you, Ben! Yeah, it's a little hard to be nice to Syllwin unless you understand her history. But once you read it, you have sympathy, which makes Syllwin all the more mad. Thank you for taking your time to read this, hopefully I can get El's story up and going soon!

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
lol Phal and Solarae would be nice to Syllwin no matter what, Astral. They're nice to pretty much everyone, unless they are obviously evil and/or crazy.
I hope you can get more done on your stories too, Astral. It's interesting learning more about your charries. (Besides what extra you've told me in real life).
I should get to work on Phal's story some more, too...

Re: Trecheries of the Past - Hobsyllwin's Past
Oh, I knew that. But even then, Phal is sympathetic towards their actions. Sol just get's kind of like, "What the heck, man? Why are you on their side?"
Thanks, Draco. Yeah, hopefully I can find the time to work on the next installment for El. And yes, you should get working on Phal's as well. It's beginning to grow exciting!
