Post GMT or what is now UTC

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time and it has been modified to UTC for Coordinated Universal Time

A few days a go I was playing with my grandson Christian, locating places, countries, cities and states on a globe he received last December for his birthday.

So within the places we located I pointed out some of the places where members of the site live.
I got curious as to see what would be the time difference between us, here in Chicago to Louis in United Arab Emirates, Fathskie in ...., Firetongue in England, HitNrunner in Washington and Incomer in the Cz. Rep..

I am +10 hrs with Louis, about +17-18 hrs with Fathskie, +4 hrs with Firetongue, -2 hrs with HitNrunner and +5hrs with Incomer.

Oh the wonders of the internet, the wonders of the cyber space!!!

How does yor time zone hours compare to Louis, Firetongue, HitNrunner and Incomer?

Fathskie I left out your country due to the fact that you PM'd it to me, so I do not know if you'd be comfortable if I made it public.

Yeah, it's pretty cool.

I'll figure this out when I'm not exhausted lol, but for future reference, I (in England) am smack bang on GMT now, which makes Annie 5 hours ahead of me I think.

LOL!!! Yes, I recalled that much. You had mentioned it to me before so that one was easy to locate on the globe for Christian. He-he, I cheated, (but he doesn't know it  )

Cool idea Annie. You are definitely right that the time differences for Louis and I are enough that either of us are usually up at odd hours working on stuff when chatting together. He is exactly 12 hours different then me, so the middle of my day is his night, the middle of his day, it my night xD It's made for some goofy meeting times for both of us, but is also convenient to remember. :D

YEY!!!! , I did learn something in Math after all! Or was it in Geography? :? Anyway, the point is that when you do something like this, it's a lot more interesting!!! I know I've kept checking on the Time Zones since then.
Pita I lived in Lemoore, CA, for two years and it is in the middle of nowhere.

Can not be that bad, everybody thinks I am rich because I am from the OC. The OC is not a good place to live if you like the peace and quiet.

Orange County, I call it the OC because there is a TV show called the OC. If you ever watch it, none of it is true (not everybody has a ferrari or porshe).

That's because you are using it with what you can relate with. Math is just a tool that you are using to accomplish something you enjoy.
Now you tell me how can I relate with algebraic equations? I hate Algebra and I have two more classes to deal with!!!

I am trying to mentally locate myself. Ann-Marie and her family were stationed two years in Ventura, CA in the Oxnard County and there was a bit of all economic levels.

I kinda like decimals because I enjoy the history behind it. The romans as a punishment to their army for certain reasons with go threw something called decimale (or something like that) and one out of every tenth soldier would be killed.

Thanks Fronzz, but I did not torture kids. Oh and I taught 4th Grade, for 7 yrs in a military school. (Just don't ask my daughter how it felt to have your Mom teach you)

I taught English to 7th, 8th & 9th grades for about three and a half yrs. It was fun!!!
Pita, yes I do. Actually my thought process is first in Spanish. It's a pain in the neck, because you do it without realizing it.

So you taught your daughter, did it put you under pressure? Because other kids could complain that you give your child special treatment so and so. I enjoy english but it is my worst subject grade wise.

Actually, in P.R. children enrolled in Pre-k and in Kindergarten have a full day just like any other grade. I was surprised to see that children here are in school for like 2½ hras per day!! That's not much time!

I don't know how I could like it more cuz I'm Homeschooled. I respect the author more cuz he was homeschooled too but I don't like it any more than anyone else.
I don't really have homework, unless I don't get done on time. My free time depends on the school day and how hard it is

All our woek is homework! And alot of kids in public school would have more free time but teachers dont wanna teach so they send their kids home with a crapload of homework, and kids put all their free time in doing extra curriculur(sp?) activities.

or you could be on the other side of the fence, like me, wishing i was homeschooled. we dont really get much free time, like maybe from six to ten each night, not counting when ppl are at basketball or football or wrestling or for the girls it would be dance or cheer or somethin. are you really only being taught two or three hours a day? that's awesome. what do you do with the rest of the day?

[color=cyan]In pre-K we teach children the colors, the shapes, numbers 1-10, the vowels. We do a lot of fine motor skills activities which will enable them to write properly when the time comes. They learn to trace, from top to bottom, cut, color and glue.
This is one of the reasons our children do not write their names all in caps, like many of them do here. They are taught early on the appropriate way to do it before they pick up bad habits.
They go through social skills, listening skills, visual discrimination, order of events ect. They even take a nap. :D

Usually the ones which give you the most headaches are the ones you think about the most and not because of any ill feelings towards them. But when they're absent, you kind of sigh in relief. :D

With the 7th - 9th I had so much fun. We would use songs to correct grammar, find main ideas, metaphors and the likes. I just tried to teach them as I would have loved to be taught when I was in school.

I taught English to the 7th-9th and the 7 yrs in the Military Academy I taught 4th Grade English Immersion Program, (as the name says all subject were in English except Spanish, of course, and I did teach all the subjects.

Kinder I taught all subjects except Religion and the fine arts, but I taught them in both languages. The rest I did English.

It's a really expensive school, with all the classes as any other, but they do Military things. And they don't live in the school either. They go home at 3:45pm.

LOL!!! I'm not a sports person. I'm more of a crafts person. Yes they had swimming, relay, cross trainning, Volley Ball, Basket ball, javalin jump. (Pita I am going to straight translation because I really don't know the names of all the sports in English.) And we were associated with the American Association of Physical Fitnes, and the kids had PE, EVERY DAY!!

Because you said you translated all the names of the sports, which you got all correct. Plus you said you taught in Puerto Rico and you have to speak spanish well to teach there.

No they are not, and the teaching of English as a subject is compulsory in P.R. since we are a territorial possesion on the US. You need to have 4yrs of English in order to graduate from High School.
When I first arrived in CA, I had a horrible time understanding people. The English I learned in PR was nothing like what the people would talk to me. It was avery hard adjustment.

No, because you need to be licensed by the state in which you are at the time. That's why I'm back at college, but I've had to take tons of classes that I did not take in PR.

Wow..!! How rare... :D :D (seeing AnnieBee goes off topic for about... 4 pages...?? ) LOL !! just joking ms.Annie!

*cough*

Well as everybody can see on my profile, my location is GMT +7 on the equator. If you don't recall which part of the world GMT +7 is,, you can either search on Google or open Date/Time in your windows control panel or try to find out my IP address, or (the easy way) I can just tell you  ,,..I live in Indonesia.

that means I'm in the exact opposite of all of you from the USA, only a slight difference with ppl from Asian continent,, about 4 hours (?) from Louis and 6 or 7 hours from people on Europe.

Ow.. hey can anyone explain about the DST a bit?

Oh yeah, I never knew that not every country did DST hehe.

Anyway fathskie, because in the winter here it is only light for a short time in the day, random people decided it would be good to change the time at certain points in the year.

In spring, we wind the clocks forwards 1 hour.
In Autumn, we wind them back 1 hour.

And it's really annoying in my opinion. I can't remember what the benefit is, just that in the Autumn and Winter, you are meant to get more hours of daylight because if it got dark at say, 4 o clock normally, once you have wound the clock back, it would get dark at 5 o clock instead.

If anyone feels like adding anything, go ahead.

    Bad Annie, Bad Annie!!!!   I never even realized Pita and I had gone BEYOND off topic. Sorry!!!!

DST was implemented here in the United States when the country was based on an agrarian industry/economy. Since children were part of the help with all the agricultural/farm activites it was implemented so that they'd be able to help and go to school not missing out on either activity.

It has been said to eliminate it, due to the fact that the US is no longer based on an agricultural economy, however, it has ended up in just that, a lot of talk. I personally have a problem when it's 9:00PM and there is still daylight. :x

In regards to the GMT, it's easier to understand when you look at a time zone map. By using the visual, you can see all the different time zones and make sense of it. (But then again, I have a thing for maps!!! )

It must mean one end of Australia is +8 and the other end is +11. You would have to find what part of Australia you live in, and see the timezone just for that area.
