OOC: This is a continuation of Mourning, so it's mainly for me, Bris, and DS4, but I don't have any objections to someone else joining. Just pm me first please. Taren circled over the great plain below, the Spine to his right and the endless emerald expanse of Du Weldenvarden to his left. His stomach snarled hungrily when he spotted a herd of fat cattle close to the edge of the plains. He was tempted to kill a few of them to sate his hunger, but he refrained. There was always the chance that they belonged to some poor farmer that couldn't afford to lose them. The bronze dragon sighed and tilted his wings, turning away from the white-faced heifers and broad-chested bulls. I really am too nice for my own good, he grouched, scowling fiercely. He blinked after a moment, then sighed again. He knew that he didn't mean it.
After another half hour of flying aimlessly over the flat-hard-dry-ground below, he caught sight of a small herd of the tiny-bounding-deer that liked to roam the dry areas of Alagaesia. He hummed happily, smoke pouring gleefully from his nostrils. And all the cows in the land rejoiced that they were safe, he chuckled to himself, diving down.
He landed with a crash in the middle of the herd, quickly taking out five with swift strikes and slashes from his enormous forepaws and talons. He bugled softly in triumph, then lowered his great bronze head to the belly of one of his kills, a big buck that was a little on the stringy side. He didn't care though, he took a massive bite and chewed slowly, enjoying the hot, fresh blood and the wild, free taste of the meat. He was glad now that he hadn't settled for the cows, domesticated animals never tasted as good as the wild ones.
He ripped into the fresh meat with gusto, and within an hour, all that was left of his meal was the back half of a fat doe. He leisurely picked at the remains, licking a thigh-bone with his barbed tongue to strip the meat from it. He sighed regretfully; he was too full to finish. He eyed the remaining meat, then looked up to peer at Du Weldenvarden, which was just barely visible from his current position. He nodded to himself, then stood and picked the carcass up in his teeth. He launched himself into the air and flew towards the forest.
He reached the trees fairly quickly, gliding lazily until he spotted what he was looking for. A small wolf pack with cubs playing around their den. He landed in the clearing. As was to be expected, the adult wolves immediately went on the attack, prepared to defend the cubs with their lives.
Peace, hunt-brothers and sisters. I bring meat for the little ones, he said kindly. He didn't have to speak in the Ancient Language, they saw the truth in his thought images. He walked slowly towards the three cubs and dropped the meat before them, then turned and walked off. When he reached the spot he had landed on, he leaped into the air and twisted to face the direction of the Spine.
He flew as quickly as possible on his full stomach, humming pleasantly with thoughts of his good deed. It was almost sun down when he reached the large cliff high up in the Spine where he and his four friends had made their camp. There was no one else around, so he assumed he was the first one back from hunting. He settled in a prime position on the cliff, one that placed him directly in the last warm rays of sunlight, then started cleaning the dried blood from his meal from around his scales on his paws and muzzle.
As he cleaned, he thought about the last two weeks. Once he, Medalanim, Lean, and Keia had left Vroengard to search for the niece he had never known he had, he had thought things would pass quickly and that he would see her soon. Once they had reached the mainland though, he realized how foolish a thought that had been. He sighed and laid his head on his paws and watched for his friends to return. Maybe Keia would have had the miraculous luck to discover something while she was out.OOC: Wow... My fingers took off on me. XD

Re: Looking for Answers
Keia swallowed the last of her meal, bones and all, then stood on her feet and shook herself out, unfurling her wings. She licked her lips, cleaning them of any remaining blood. She inspected her talons for blood, and, finding them free, she crouched and sprang high into the air. All she, Medalanim, Lean, and Taren had been doing lately was tracking down Taren's sister's daughter. They'd found evidence of her life on Doru Araeba, and Keia had made a guess, but a pretty accurate one, that if the hatchling was still alive, that she was somewhere on the mainland. They had been searching for a while now and come up with little, but Keia still hoped to find the little one, safe and sound.
She snorted to herself and inspected the ground below her, flying lower than she normally would so she could see more, even though her eyesight was keen. She might miss something if she flew at her normal height.
But sadly all she saw was low hills, open fields, trees, and the great forest of Du Weldenvarden. She sighed and banked toward the cliff that they had made their camp, beating her wings to slow her velocity. She saw that Taren was already back from his hunting trip. She pulled in her wings to lower her altitude to land, when something caught her eye.
She flared her wings and caught the air, hovering in place above a group of trees. She narrowed her eyes, trying to find what she'd seen a few seconds ago. She searched for several minutes, but came up with nothing. She growled to herself and twisted around, once more heading for the cliff. She grumbled aloud as she settled onto the cliff with her hindclaws lightly before gently lowering onto her forepaws. She shook herself and glanced at Taren, shaking her head in a negative before he could ask if she'd found anything.
She curled up and laid down, setting her head on her forepaws to wait for Lean and Medalanim to return.
- - - - - - - - - -
Lean beat her wings powerfully, making it sound like thunder was rumbling as she flew. She banked around, snorting a puff of smoke out and holding her breath when it swept past her face. She rose up in the air, her wings beating hard to slow her bulk so she didn't crash into the cliff and maim or kill Taren and Keia. She lifted her hindclaws forward to grasp the stone for balance, but instead of actually doing so, she touched her Changing Seal and slid into her human form. She rolled forward onto the cliff, now in her much smaller twoleg form. She stood and grimaced, her luscious black hair covered in stone dust, and the same for her tunic and leggings. She brushed herself off, then looked at Keia, who shook her head mutely. Lean sighed and sat, leaning against Keia's shoulder.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim flew in circles high above the world. Enjoying the calm serenity of the high heavens above the clouds, and for one of the few times since Solir's death, felt free and happy.
She had already eaten the day before, so she was waiting patiently as Taren finished his own meal and Keia performed one last search for the day. Far below her, she saw the rolling hills of Northern Alagaësia sweep from the distant mountains to the West, to the dark green expanse of Du Weldenvarden in the East.
The sight of the forest caused Medalanim to turn her head away in bitterness. She had longed so much to visit the Elves in their great tree halls again, as they would be like old friends to her. Some of the oldest that she knew were still living, such as Rhünon, Queen Islanzadì, or even Gilderian the Wise would welcome her as an old friend. . . Or would they?
She thought back to her time alone, and knew that because she could have returned at any time they might call her a disgrace and not trust her from then on. But time had yet to tell her of what was to come, so for now, it was her duty to help Taren find his family.
If Glaedr or Oromis were still alive, they'd certainly believe me and open to me wholeheartedly. But what if. . . No. I'm certain Glaedr would have refused to disgorge his Eldunarì. Not in a million years would he do such a thing. But what if to exist as a last hope should Eragon fail, he remained behind, or even what if he gave it to Eragon in hopes that his guidance may provide the key? Medalanim paused for a moment then cackled to herself, letting streams of smoke burst out with every grinding laugh. I'm talking to myself again. . . I thought I was rid of it when I returned from exile.
She hovered in the air for a moment before she believed everyone was finished. She dove backwards and while preforming a half loop, twisted in the air with years of practice and dexterity. The air caught under her half opened wings, whistling with increasing intensity as she accelerated. Searching with her mind, she found the cliff upon which everyone was perched and aimed towards there.
When she was right above the cliff, she snapped open and twisted her wings in such a way where she immediately curved upwards, putting intense strain on her sockets and wing membranes to the point where they felt like they were to tear apart. However, with skill she performed a low loop over the cliff, and when she finished, she fluttered softly to the ground.
Medalanim gave Taren a smug look, as she had been demonstrating throughout the time searching for his niece the dangerous and difficult flying techniques that she and Solir had perfected in her youth. Some she was unable to do now due to lack of practice or with the increased weight of age, but the ones that she did have the strength to do, she showed off with pride.
However her smug look dimmed when her eyes darted to Keia, who had Lean in human form resting on her shoulder. The dark look in her eyes said everything that needed to be said, and a hint of annoyance sparked in Medalanim's mind. Indeed it had been many weeks since they all had left Vroengard Island, and they still have come up with nothing. And over the last few days her faith in Keia's abilities to track had begun to waver, yet she still clung to the hint of hope that this now not so young hatchling was still alive. Hopefully, Keia would return from her search with news or mention one small lead that would be of help. However she didn't speak, and only watched to see if another would speak up first.

Re: Looking for Answers
Taren looked up eagerly when he heard Keia approaching, then frowned when she shook her head. He knew that it the sienna was one of the greatest tracker-dragons of the age, so he couldn't imagine what was going on with his niece's trail that made it so hard to pick up. Maybe tomorrow, he said ruefully, filling the words with feelings that would tell her he didn't blame her for the search taking so long.
The bronze snorted shortly when Lean appeared, then transformed into a two-leg and leaned against Keia. He had seen her do this a few times before, so it didn't startle him quite as much as it used to.
Taren looked around and cocked an eyeridge at Medalanim's spirited display of her aerial prowess. He chuckled lightly, the sound rumbling deeply through his chest and shaking the ground. Perhaps you could teach my niece a thing or two when we find her, he said with admiration. He blinked when he realized this comment might offend Keia, and looked at her sheepishly.

Re: Looking for Answers
Keia smiled a bit and nodded at Taren, but she was thinking about that strange flash that she had seen. It hadn't looked like a light of some sort, if looked like the sun had reflected off of a surface of some sort.
She snorted softly, pondering about what surfaces it might be. The only one that made even a little bit of sense was a dragon scale. Dragons liked the Spine for the solitude that they could find here. Whether it was Taren's niece however, that remained to be seen. She glanced at Taren when he spoke of teaching his niece aerial tricks, she smiled. We'll find her. she said, blinking her eyes at him to say she wasn't offended at all. Her mind went back to the flash she'd seen, and finally she couldn't help it any longer.
She got to her paws, pushing Lean forward and making the ancient dragoness growl softly in her chest, but Keia ignored her. She padded straight to the edge of the cliff and launched off, heading straight toward the area that she'd seen it. Stay here. she said shortly to her three companions, her mind intent on her search, but she let Medalanim, Taren, and Lean link with her mind so they might know what she was looking for.
She found the little group of trees and hovered above it, searching harder than before. For several minutes she scanned the area and found nothing, but still what had caught her attention earlier bothered her. She pulled in her wings and slipped through the tree branches, shifting to her human form. She landed in a crouch on the ground with a soft, almost inaudible thud. She stood and scanned the trees carefully, one hand on the hilt of her sword.
She paused and inspected a particular tree, walking briskly toward it. She studied the ground as she walked, and a slight smirk pulled at her lips. Dragon tracks. There were many and they were overlapping often, but the shape was unmistakable. She looked up at the tree and ran her fingers down the trunk carefully, inch by inch, into her left middle finger touched something sharp edged. She winced and pulled her hand away to look at the slice on the tip of her finger.
She pursed her lips and looked back at the trunk at the place she'd cut herself, tilting her head this way and that. She shifted far to the left until she was perpendicular to the spot she'd injured her finger. And there, wedge deeply into the wood, but with enough of it's glittery surface showing to reflect the sun, was a smallish gold-white scale. She nodded to herself and sent the information to her three companions, then studied the ground more carefully to try and get a direction that the dragon might have gone. It was not proven yet that the scale, or the tracks, belonged to Taren's niece, but she hoped they did.
She saw the dragon tracks heading deeper into the Spine, and then ended with heavy gouges in the earth that told the dragon had taken flight. She pursed her lips. Well. At least we have a vague direction now of where to go. If it is Kurenai's daughter, I hope she didn't head toward any of the towns around the spine. All of them are loyal to the king, mostly. And we can also hope that this trail is not as old as I think it is. which was several years at the least. The tracks were faint, not fresh, and the gouges in the earth simply looked like someone had taken a sword and slashed the earth with it.
She leaped into a tree and nimbly climbed to the top, then jumped from the tree, shifting to her dragon form as she did. She beat her wings and rose into the air once more. She landed on the cliff and shook herself, eying Medalanim. Tracking takes more than just skill. First there must be a trail to follow in the first place, otherwise you're worse than a chicken running around with its head cut off. she said with a soft snort. Lean grinned at her, to which Keia responded with a wink that neither Medalanim nor Taren could see.
The sienna padded to the place she had left and laid down once more, letting Lean lean on her shoulder again. The ancient dragoness closed her eyes and started humming. Keia half closed her eyes and huffed.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim's eyes widened when Keia flew off. Turning her head, she gazed after her in confusion until Keia connected her mind to everyone, showing her intentions. The news stunned Medalanim and caused her heart to leap for excitement; her anxiety for a lead rising rapidly as her claws crumbled the rock beneath them and grind it into heaps of silt with rumbling cracks.
Medalanim breathlessly watched with anticipation as she looked around through Keia's own eyes. And although it was terrific news when Keia found the dragon tracks and the yellow scale, a second glance of the scene caused a pit to form in Medalanim's heart when a grim possibility came to her from the evidence shown.
However she kept her observations to herself until Keia arrived, showing the worry in her eyes as she landed. I know that the trail is first and foremost in tracking, but attention to detail comes secondhand. I may not excel in tracking as you are, but from what I saw, that was a former battle ground. I know as I've seen many like it during Galbatorix's rise, despite it's age. The upturned earth and the fact that a scale was left behind wedged so deeply into a tree clearly shows that there was at least some violent activity in the area when she was there.
Medalanim worryingly glanced at Taren, who she knew was listening intently, My guess is either local villagers had attacked her or she had wrestled with some other creature, but at least we know that Taren's neice has been here. We have the next step in the trail, but now the question is, what happened next? She looked towards everyone else, hoping that Keia or even Taren might provide some sort of insight.

Re: Looking for Answers
Taren's heart leaped into his throat when Keia flew away, opening her mind to the other's so they could see what she was doing. His copper-and-bronze eyes followed her every movement, until she disappeared into a small stand of trees some distance away. Without noticing, Taren shifted where he was laying until he was crouched over the lip of the cliff, his forepaws gripping the rock so tightly they were shaking. A faint cracking sound and a trickle of dust came from between his feet, but were ignored.
He could see what Keia was seeing: the churned earth, the cut in the tree where the scale was, the marks that indicated she had flown away, and above all else, the fact that the marks were old. He sighed in frustration, but also relief. They had finally found some sign that she had at least made it to the mainland and not been thrown into the sea and drowned by a storm on her way.
The bronze snapped his head around to stare at Medalanim when she spoke, his eyes bright with worry. A soft keening erupted from between his serrated fangs at the images he conjured up of her being hacked at and killed by the two-leg's crude weapons. He stared at the blue-dragoness for a minute, wide-eyed, before he reminded himself that there were marks showing she had flown away, so she couldn't have been killed! He realized that last that had washed across his mental link with the other three, but didn't bother trying to retrieve it, he simply looked at the others and repeated it.
But those claw marks... They look about as old as those others, so she must have flown away! Maybe she flew somewhere her instincts would have told her was safe, like Du Fells Nangoroth. No human can reach it's peaks, and the elves wouldn't bother, they think all the dragons are dead, he said, his voice starting out desperate, then gradually calming as he realized it was a sound assumption. He mentally kicked himself for not thinking of it sooner.

Re: Looking for Answers
Keia glanced at Medalanim and tilted her head, snorting softly. She huffed and, reluctantly, nodded her head. Yes, you are correct. I had hoped that maybe you had missed that. she said grimly, her eyes darkening somewhat. There is always the chance that she had stopped there simply to rest and used the tree as a scratching post for her shoulder or neck, but the ground is too churned up for my liking for that story to be likely. she sighed and crossed her forepaws, listening to the blue dragoness and the bronze male speak. What Taren said made sense, and she had a feeling in her gut that he spoke true. She snorted again and answered Medalanim. Normally I would recommend going back and catching any scents available, but from the age of the scene, I doubt there would be any detectable scents to catch, even to a highly keen nose. she shook her head a bit as if trying to rid herself of a cloud of flies. For lack of something that I can do, I'd ask Taren what we should do. she said, turning her gaze to the bronze. We've found tracks that lead deeper into the spine. You also say that she might have gone to Du Fells Nangoroth. My gut says we might find her in the desert. So what to do? Should we split up? Or follow one path and then the other? she suggested, tilting her head once more.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim's eyes narrowed as she looked between Taren and Keia. Splitting up would be a good idea. But I think the choice is up to Taren, and also we need to keep in mind that Keia is the one who has the keenest sight and smell.
She looked towards the bronze expectantly, seeing where he would like to search first or whether if he wanted to split the group up to search multiple locations.
OOC: Short. . .

Re: Looking for Answers
Taren looked at each of his friends, anxiety clear on his face. He wanted to find his niece more than anything and the idea of splitting up appealed to him, but what if something were to happen to the others while they were apart? He finally sighed and looked at the ground, shaking his head. No, we shouldn't split up. Galbatorix will be looking for the two of you by now, or so we assume. It would be too dangerous. Together, the four of us can fight off anything he sends our way, he said slowly, intertwining his words with the thoughts behind his reasoning, looking up from the ground to study Keia and Lean.
He wasn't ashamed to let his impatience show, but he subdued it, made it less prominent, for Keia's sake. The best thing we can do now, is follow the tracks you found leading into the Spine, if she isn't there, then we will go to the desert and visit the ancestral homes of our race, he continued.

Re: Looking for Answers
Keia nodded slowly in agreement with Medalanim and Taren, but her brow furrowed at the mention of Galbatorix sending out scouts to search for her and Lean. She snorted softly and met Taren's gaze, seeing his impatience and eagerness to find his niece, strong and potent, but at the same time subdued and contained. I suppose, she said slowly, but her voice sounded uncertain. it is a sound plan. But what you mentioned worries me. It has gone beyond the usual amount of time it takes me to track down and bring in a rebel or traitor. He should have sent someone days ago. It makes m a bit uneasy to not have seen any of his servants around lately. He has other servants that have tracking skills to match mine, though I'm the oldest of them. she said, huffing and scowling. She felt a little stupid and shameful for not bringing this topic up earlier. Lean raised an eyebrow,"I think the only one you need worry about is Kalo. He'll do anything for Galbatorix if it will keep his sister safe." said the ancient dragoness. Keia snorted scornfully. The hatchling may know how to track but Galbatorix has hatched and raised that male into a killing machine. An assassin. His sister is the deadly one, even more so than her brother. That small little bundle of scales is lethal, without question. His experiments with magic were obvious successful. growled Keia, her aquamarine eyes sparkling with anger at the thought of a dragon being magically changed while in the egg. Enhanced is what Galbatorix called it. Her upper lip curled in a snarl, then she calmed and snorted. Though I doubt either Kalo or his sister would come here. The King fears the Spine and he would not be willing to loose any servants to them. she said, huffing.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim nodded to Taren. Although she was sick of the Spine after living inside it for a hundred years, she was willing to fly to the ends of the earth to see Taren reunited with family.
Medalanim only gave Keia a comforting smile and raised her twin tailblades in the air to reflect the sun, as she usually did when thinking about fighting. Well, in all cases you are in the protection of willing friends. Even if abominations of Galbatorix's design chase us into the mountains, I doubt that they would match us.
Medalanim then fell silent for a moment then turned to the west, gesturing with her large head towards the mountains. And if you don't want them to find us sitting on this rock chatting, I suggest that we leave now. After you, Keia.
She waited for the sienna to fly, and then leaped into the air after her with a bugle of pleasure, ready to continue the search.

Re: Looking for Answers
The scales on Taren's back and neck rippled as they lifted from the skin beneath, his hackles rising in a snarl as Keia and Lean spoke of dragons that Galbatorix had changed in the egg. That foul man had better be grateful it's Eragon's destiny to destroy him. If it were left to me, I would take my time he hissed, flinging himself into the air after Medalalnim. He tilted his wings slightly and oriented himself with a direction that would carry him further into the mountains.

Re: Looking for Answers
Keia smiled at Medalanim and simply nodded in agreement. Yes, she was surrounded by friends, for once. At the blue dragoness's urging, the sienna launched herself from the cliff. She glanced back at Lean, grinning wolfishly at the two leg that clung to her neck spikes. Lean laughed, then jumped off and flew through the air. Keia watched with some concern as the female fell toward the forest below. Then her body seemed to ripple and expand and, with a brief flash of light, the ancient black was again dressed in her scales.
The giant dragoness beat her huge wings and lifted easily into the air, soaring above Keia, Medalanim, and Taren. Keia snorted softly and glanced up at the black. With as old as you are, Lean, how is it that you are not the size of a mountain? Even your cousin, Aeraldi, isn't that gigantic, but he's only a few centuries younger than you. she said, raising an eyeridge. Lean laughed, and the sound was booming.
Need. As the years went by I realized being the size of one of the Spine mountains would be to a disadvantage, especially in more recent years with the Empire, for hiding. So I grew smaller. I suppose one could say that I willed myself to be small, and magic made it happen. Aeraldi did the same when he found a mate in Phalynx; he willed himself to be small, closer to her size, but still be able to grow naturally. Ancient magic, from when I was hatched, is slightly different from the magic of today, of which you, Medalanim, can control to an extent. It was purer, more willing to be changed and used and directed. The Ancient magic flows in my veins as thickly as the New Age magic flows in you three. said the ancient black.
Keia pondered this, curious. How big is your true form? From before you willed yourself to this size. she asked, wondering how big Lean was, truly. The black dragoness snorted softly as she thought. Well, I changed my size about five years before the Fall, and I've grown since then. At the time, I was about four times larger. Now, with my current size, I'd say maybe...actually, probably the same. said Lean.
The ancient black glanced down at the three dragons below here, and Keia grinned, getting an idea already of what Lean wasa thinking. I could try and show you. I don't know if the magic would work the same doing the opposite, but I could give it a try. she said, raising an eyeridge. Keia chuckled to herself, glancing at Medalanim and Taren.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim flew below the three, hovering just above the tops of the trees. To mainly practice her flight skills, which had become a strict regimen that she had placed on herself since she had returned from exile, she darted between the protruding shafts of the taller pines, sometimes through gaps that had only barely enough room for her body.
She was indeed not in the same physique as she was when she held off many of the Forsworn's dragons, and knew that if she was to have any chance with his agents, she would have to return to her former strength. It would not be easy; a hundred years had softened her muscles and blurred her senses. Yet she knew that with work they can be restored.
Medalanim also conjured spells with each heaving breath, practicing her magic on a small scale. Her control of her magic had drastically increased since Vroengard, however, she only would use spells that required larger amounts as a last resort, as her control over it, and the consequences of it's use, she was unsure of.
The ancient words spilling through her sharp teeth ranged from eliminating the scents of her and the other three behind them, to pushing the wind under her wings to guide her through more challenging groups of trees. All the while she kept in touch with the burning outside source of the wild magic, which she was now able to keep from overwhelming her body for the most part.
All in all, she was preparing herself to fight. She knew that eventually she would be tested against Galbatorix or his agents, and when they did, she wanted to be ready. Soon enough, the forest below began to thin and she grew tired of the magic, so she ceased the connection with the powerful energy of the world.
Medalanim darted through the last of the pines and beat her wings to match Taren's level, flying behind and just to the side of him. The Spine now stretched before them, dark and foreboding, and they were only mere miles from the peaks. Hopefully Keia would speak up when she picked up the trail again. . .

Re: Looking for Answers
Taren listened to Keia and Lean's conversation with a small, curious tendril of thought. When Lean thought about showing them how large she truly was, he flapped heavily until he was slightly above her and far to the side so her wings wouldn't accidentally clip him when she changed. The bronze watched her closely out of the corner of his eye. He bugled a soft greeting to Medalanim when she drifted up to his level. He could feel her practicing her control over her magic in her mind, as well as her determination to whip herself back into shape. From the sounds of her panting, she was a little tired, despite having eaten earlier. He sent a warm flow of energy across their linked minds, just enough to soothe her burning muscles.
Two deer our next meal says she's as big as that moutain below us, he said, indicating a medium-sized moutain below them. He cocked an eyeridge at the blue, waiting to see if she'd take his bet.

Re: Looking for Answers
Lean smiled at Taren then closed her eyes. She felt Keia shift down closer to the ground. The ancient black dragoness reached for the magic that coursed through her entire being. She delved into her core and spread the magic through her body, saturating it with pure power. Once she was filled with the ancient magic, she willed herself to grow to what she should be. Her body grew slowly, then more swiftly, like it was fast forwarding the natural growth that her body would undergo over the many years. Her wingbeats soon turned into thundering roars that shook the earth below them and made huge gusts of wind that snapped trees in half from sheer force. The rumble in her colossal chest that had been low and gentle before seemed to reverberate everywhere now. And she was indeed as big as the mountain below them. Bigger, much bigger, if she accounted for the full span of her wings as well as the length of her neck, head, and tail. She swung her gigantic head around to peer up at them with a huge eye, the navy blue iris twinkling with humor. She blinked at the three dragons above her, snorting smoke. This is me as I am supposed to be. she said, and smiled. Her eye alone was the size of Taren and Medalanim combined. She snorted and heaved her enormous bulk higher into the air with two roaring flaps of her wings.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim snorted at Taren's bet than kept a close eye on Lean as she shifted her form. Just to be safe, Medalanim moved herself some distance away.
Lean's form began to grow, slowly, then rapidly, as she began to engulf her vision with her mass. Eventually, Lean became the size that matched her age, becoming literal miles in length and obscuring the vision of almost all of the ground beneath her.
Medalanim gaped at the utter size of Lean, her jaw dropping slightly from the sight. Even the largest and oldest of the dragons that she remembered before could stand comfortably on her back. I have met dragons old, and dragons large, but you, Lean, surpass even the memories of the oldest Eldunarì I have met. She answered back with a smile, wavering in flight with each thundering flap of Lean's wings. Indeed, only in legend and myth did Medalanim hear of dragons of Lean's size.
However, Medalanim recounted the many rhymes, poems, and stories in her head, and then lost her smile. However, you are fortunate to change your size. Medalanim continued, For the one weakness of your true form is that you cannot sustain the energy to move through food, thus you would eventually fall into a deep slumber forever, according to all of the stories and myths describing the ancient dragons that is. But I have never met one in person that has lived as long as you, so I am not completely sure.
It often saddened Medalanim whenever she thought of things like this. Although true it was that dragons were technically unable to die of age, there still was a limit to their time to truly live in the world due to their growth, with the elder dragons slowly loosing all concern for their body and worldly things, and then eventually falling into an eternal slumber and slowly be covered and consumed into the bowls of the earth as legend states, unless they were somehow able to stop it or change their size at will, as Lean has. It was something that Medalanim could not comprehend, much less imagine herself in the same place, but she knew it would eventually come to pass. Maybe eventually, I will need to use my magic to keep myself small as Lean does, that is, if I survive that long.

Re: Looking for Answers
Taren chuckled when Medalanim didn't respond to his idea of a bet, then turned his attention back to Lean. Her form was growing slowly, but the change was getting quicker with the passing time. Before long, she was at her full size. The bronze male uttered a choked growl of surprise. Her paws were bigger than he was, and each of her talons looked to be about the same length of the main part of his body. Oh my, was all he said, looping up and around in the air, trying to get higher so he could see her better.
Each flap of her wings was like thunder and made his teeth rattle and his eyes water. The trees below them were shaking like they were caught in the midst of a hurricane. He watched the sight below him for some time, then called out to Lean. Perhaps you should change back now. The signs of your passage are clearly visible, even at this height, he said, watching her mind closely. Medalanim was correct about the ancient dragons, and if they weren't careful, it was possible Lean would slip into such a coma. Although he supposed the chances of that were slim, considering her strange powers.

Re: Looking for Answers
Lean snorted gently and blinked at Medalanim. Indeed. I don't boast when I say I might be one of the oldest beings in Alagaësia. she said. She frowned slightly as the blue dragoness continued, and nodded her giant head slowly. [b[Yes, that was another of my concerns. My cousin survived because for some odd reason, he remained the size of a two month old hatchling for his entire life.[/b] she knew the real reason behind that, but she would not tell any secrets of her family, though she trusted Medalanim and Taren. She rolled her eye around to look at Taren and rumbled deeply in her colossal chest. Very well. she said, and closed her eyes once more. It took her a bit longer because her body was much more immense and required more magic to run through it so it would change properly. Slowly, her body shrank down to its regular size. After flying for a few moments with her eyes closed to become accustomed to her small size once more, she opened them and smiled. But I am content in the body that I have now, so I shall remain this size until I grow larger. she rumbled.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim watched with slight awe as Lean shrunk down in size, again first slowly and then rapidly. Medalanim darted towards Lean and glided beside her.
That is good, Medalanim answered to Lean with a smile, But now I think that we have another problem; we probably should hide ourselves and search on the ground for a while, considering that half the Empire was able to see you. Medalanim's voice contained glimmer of humorous sarcasm, but also had an edge of truth. Someone could have easily spotted Lean from many miles away, and it would be only a matter of time before Galbatorix would send someone to investigate. Also I think that we are where we need to be to begin our search.
She tilted downwards and began to circle over the mountains, gradually decreasing altitude before landing on a wide cliff.

Re: Looking for Answers
Taren watched Lean shrink back to the size she had been when they had met, still as curious as he had been a moment before. I don't think I would ever get bored watching that, he said with a chuckle, tilting his wings so that he was in a shallow, sideways dive. He corrected his wings when he was back beside the others.
I agree with Medalanim, although maybe we'll get lucky and most will assume it was just Shruikan appearing out of nowhere, he said, following Medalanim and a few yards away from her.

Re: Looking for Answers
Lean grinned at both dragons, banking around to follow Keia and land on the cliff. I'm glad I could entertain you two for a while. But you are right. the sienna dragoness landed on the cliff first and folded her wings to move out of the way for the ancient black. Lean pulled in her wings to land and then Changed at the last moment, rolling to absorb the landing impact like she had done before. She stood and brushed herself down. She looked around to find Keia inspecting the ground close to Medalanim's forepaws. She started to approach, but paused with her eyes wide; at the edge of the cliff, where Medalanim was pretty much standing, there was numerous claw marks, small and thin but definitely there. They had probably been produced when the creature took flight and gouged the marks into the stone with their hindclaws. Lean grinned.
- - - - - - - - - -
Keia snorted and grinned up at Medalanim. Nice job. Though I don't know if it was her, these tracks look similar to the ones I found one the ground earlier. she said, sniffing the ground. She couldn't catch any scent, though there might have been one, but Medalanim's more recent passing had unfortunately masked it for the moment. She snorted her shook herself, thinking that she might try again later. She sat back on her haunches and went about cleaning her foretalons, looking around with her eyes at the little cliff they had all landed on.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim looked down, and when she saw the claw marks beneath her paws, her eyes widened and she reeled back, startled. Lasta eka! She cursed in the elven tongue, thinking she may have ruined it.
She watched tensely as Keia inspected it and found no scent to follow. Medalanim sighed and hung her head low, Sorry. she said both for masking the scent and cursing so harshly. Last time she remembered doing that was when Solir rather painfully latched on her tail blade.
But immediately when she looked back up, she noticed something, and trying not to erase any more scent that was there, she held her breath as she leaned closer to the marks. These scratches are fresher, Medalanim discovered, but just by a bit. She seems to have bedded her for a year or so before moving on according to the size of the marks. So at least, we are gaining on her trail. Now we need to find where she headed next.
OOC: For anyone wanting to know; Lasta Eka means "Curse me with ill-fate." Kind of like Barzuln for the dwarves, but much more severe.

Re: Looking for Answers
Taren cocked an eyeridge at Medalanim when she cursed. No, please. Tell us how you really feel, he said with a teasing tone. He walked forward, holding his breath like Medalanim, and inspected the tracks the two dragoness's had found. There's nothing distinctive about them, but... My gut tells me they're hers, he said, looking around at the others.
He hummed happily and backed away from the tracks so that Keia could continue to inspect them if she wanted to. At least we know we're heading in the right direction, he said, sitting back on his haunches.
How about Medalanim and I wait here, while Keia and Lean switch to your human forms and continue to look about? I can hide the two of us with magic, and no one will think anything of two humans wandering around, so we wouldn't have anything to fear from Galbatorix's servants. To be honest, I'm still feeling a little jumpy about who may have seen Lean, and who exactly they report to, he continued, hesitant to suggest the plan. He didn't want them to think he was bossing them around.

Re: Looking for Answers
Lean nodded and snorted softly, making sure that her breath would not pass over the marks and obliterate the scent any further. I agree with that plan. she said, blinking. She touched the Changing Seal and for a moment she was concealed in flash of light. When it cleared she was in her human form. Her hair was a shimmery, vibrant black that shone in the light. At the moment it was in a thick braid down her spine to the middle of her back. Her trousers were a dark green, and her tunic a light grey, easy colors that could blend in with her surroundings. Keia shifted to her human form as well. Her appearance was pretty much the same as Lean's, except for the hair color, which was sienna instead of black, and the gold bladed weapon that the young woman had strapped to her hip. Keia was a little shorter than Lean, though only by a few inches. Lean pursed her lips,"If someone saw me and reported it, and it reached Galbatorix, he would send Shruikan." she said, scowling a bit. Keia laughed coldly,"You wish, Lee. He'll send Kalo. Galbatorix would order Kalo to come. That assassin dragon could bite whatever he's going after and then force it to come with him back to the Empire. And once he found the group, he would bite me with his poisoned teeth and force you to take me back to Uru'baen for the cure." Lean glowered at the woman,"I prefer to think on the bright side of things, but whatever." she said, and shrugged. Keia stuck out her tongue,"I can take Kalo. He's younger than me and while he may be advanced because of Galbatorix's tinkering, he doesn't have the experience of ninety-five years under his scales." Keia smiled grimly, then turned and walked to Medalanim's side.
- - - - - - - - - -
Keia stopped beside the blue dragoness and gently patted her neck, scratching lightly underneath the scales,"You did nothing wrong, Medalanim. I might have done the same thing too if I had landed from your angle." she comforted, smiling into one of the blue's ice-blue-ringed-with-dark-blue eyes. Keia knelt down and gently touched one of the scratch marks, feeling how deep they were and how cleanly cut they were. She pursed her lips and stood, glancing about the cliff to search for other signs. She shifted, and a faint glint caught her eye, stuffed and almost hidden within a group of stones. She dug with her fingers and pulled loose a large scale, easily the size of her open hand. It glittered a pale white-gold. She smiled at Taren and held up the scale,"Looks like your gut feeling was right, Taren." she said, winking at the bronze.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim gave a teasing gesture back to Taren before looking back to Lean and Keia. I have fought Shruikan before, and I have dealt him a few wounds myself. Him I know how to fight, and if that black monster arrives I can easily help you defeat him. This Kalo you speak of, his magic is unfamiliar to me, so you and Lean must be the ones to fight him. However if his bite forces you to his will as you say, then I will make sure that he will not get near me. She flashed her tailblades in the air to punctuate the sentence. I will break his teeth before they will sink into my flesh.
When both the dragons shifted to their human forms, a twinge of uneasiness formed in Medalanim's stomach. I can never get used to that. She said to herself.
She looked at the small human that was Keia standing next to her when she reached forwards and touched Medalanim's neck. The light scratch stemmed unfamiliar feelings in Medalanim, causing her to draw back and make a light snarl at Keia as shivers crept up her spine and caused her tailblade to quiver in the air.
I am sorry. Medalanim explained when she caught herself and relaxed, I have not felt a human's touch for a long time, and even longer from someone other than my former Rider. As welcome as I am to your kind gesture, it just makes me. . . Uncomfortable. It is best that you do not touch me while you are human. Medalanim tried to make as kind of a face to Keia as possible, but she could not hold back the shame in her eyes of not being able to accept a mere scratch on the neck from a friend.
Her mood was lightened somewhat, however, when Keia pulled a yellow scale out of the rocks near the scratches. Now they were certain that they were on the trail, and that Taren's niece was closer, judging by the size of the scale.

Re: Looking for Answers
Alright, it's settled then, he said, breaching the barrier in his mind without a second thought. Illusions were as easy for him to create as breathing was. Within seconds, he had created a simple illusion that hid them from sight and, while it did not entirely hide their scent, made it appear to be several months old. Aside from us being invisible, the whole thing is based on perception. They can smell us, but will think it's a months old trail, they can also hear us and, but for the loudest of sounds, will think it's the breeze. Don't move around a lot and don't snarl or roar, and we will be fine, he said to Medalanim, pressing thoughts and memories into his words so she could see what exactly he had done.
When he pulled his mind back from the magic, Lean and Keia were already in their human forms. His eyes softened and he looked sadly at Medalanim when she growled and pulled away from Keia. He could tell she was ashamed by her actions, but couldn't help them anyway. Since they were already hidden from the other's sight, he reached out and tapped her wing comfortingly with his own, before backing away.
This Kalo, can he sense the use of magic? If he can, my illusions may be of no use. In fact, they might be a hindrance, he asked the dragon-hidden-two-legs, peering at their tiny forms with one eye.

Re: Looking for Answers
Keia blinked at Medalanim and smiled slightly,"It's fine, don't worry about it..." she said, turning her attention back to the scale. She glanced at Taren,"If he can, we don't know. Lean is the one who helped train him." she said absently. Lean pursed her lips,"I don't know either, to be honest." admitted the ancient black female.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim's eyes dimmed with worry, ignoring the comforting touch from Taren. Then to be safe, we will assume he does, so that we are prepared for the worst. . . Yet I doubt even the most twisted of dragons can stand against the four of us combined.
Medalanim wandered in thought for a few seconds, scheming about what to do if Kalo detected them, but then snapped out of it and looked at the scale. But even with evil on our tails, it will be harder for them to find us when we are already long gone when they reach here. It's best if you start searching for clues now, Keia, Lean. And be quick. Time may not be on our side.

Re: Looking for Answers
OOC: I'm thinking a little fight-or-flight would be good, so if y'all have any charries that work for Galby or someone else, feel free to bring them in for a fight scene or two. If y'all don't have any, I can bring in Arston and Arturos. (I won't keep them around though, just long enough to get themselves in trouble.) Medalanim's right, we should hurry just in case. If you find something, call us and we will come to you, it will save time, he said to them. He put his head down close to the scale they had found, crooning softly. Thank-you Keia, you don't know how much it means to me that you are helping find her. That you all are helping me, he said, licking her human form lightly on the forearm.
He looked up at the sky, the sun was just passed the midday mark. You still have many hours of daylight left. I have a good feeling about this, he said to them. In the back of his mind he strangled the uneasy feeling that was making his scales itch before the others could hear it.

OOC: I don't have anyone currently in the Empire. XD
IC: Keia nodded to Taren and smiled as he licked her arm. She reached out and rubbed his snout gently with her hand. It's a very small thing I can do to repay all the evil I've done in my life... she said to him privately, while aloud she said,"Of course." She turned to continue her search, but not before tossing a quick "Be careful" over her shoulder at both dragons.
OOC: Ew, short...

Re: Looking for Answers
OOC: I have Vaerin. He's itching for something to do.
IC: Medalanim nodded slowly in agreement with Taren about calling them when they find something, and then watched as the two human-shaped-dragons left. As soon as they were out of Medalnim's sight, she she turned to Taren, her gaze dim. I don't know about you, but I have a bad feeling about this. I think that we are being followed, and something tells me that it will meet us very soon. She said with a tone of suspicion. She was telling the truth; she felt indeed that there was a presence coming towards them from her connection with the magic in her body.
But then a twinkle began to shine in her eye as her mood changed drastically, However I've been coming up with a plan for a while now. What if we wait for them to come to us? We can easily ambush them, using your talents in illusions to bait them, and using these mountains to our advantage. I know that together we can take whomever the King sends, and once the threat is eliminated we can search safely, or at least, buy us some time. What do you think? Medalanim twitched when she heard a plant rustle from a nearby animal, but then relaxed again.

Re: Looking for Answers
OOC: That sounds fun Bris, I've never seen you rp with Vaerin before. Taren rumbled the air in the back of his throat, creating a noise that wasn't exactly a purr or a growl, when Keia bade them to be careful. He watched the two dragons leave, wondering how they were able to remain standing without a tail for balance, as they normally would have. He looked at Medalanim, a thoughtful look on his face. I guess I shouldn't be surprised you noticed, as in tune with wild magic as you are. You're feeling the anticipation of all the wild things, plant-life included, that they always feel before a battle. It goes unnoticed by most of us, but you aren't most of us, are you? he said, a twinkle in his eye. Then he huffed and looked at the ground between his toes, thinking.
Whoever it is must be reasonably, and probably more so, powerful. Galbatorix knows there is at least one other with Keia and Lean, who are powerful in their own rights, so he wouldn't send just anyone. I'm not seeing how my illusions can be of any help, unless you plan on ensnaring them in something designed to send them mad, he said slowly, images playing out in his head as he thought up different ideas.
After a minute he grumbled, a dark plume of smoke rolling up from his nostrils and twisting around his head, dissipating in the light breeze. I could probably think up something, but it would be so much easier if I knew who he was sending and a little something about them, he said, making a mental note to find out all he could about Galbatorix's servants. But you said you've been coming up with a plan... Dare I ask? he said, grinning with malicious anticipation.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim turned to Taren, a sly grin etched on her face. Well it is just that. Because Galbatorix has sent out one of his best after us, he expects us to run. A predator doesn't expect to become prey when it is on the hunt, so I plan to ambush them using the mountains as protection and cover.
Medalanim gestured towards the mountains, at the end of the long, thin valley that on it's borders the cliff was perched, surrounded by steep cliffs and slopes. Flying or not, they would come through the same end of the valley that we came in. The mountains on either side are forested and have multiple caves, which will be able to hide us. We will create an illusion of us, feeding off of the energy of the surrounding trees to divert their attention and give them something to chase, where they will follow to there. Medalanim swung her head towards where the valley branched into two, and then towards the end of the smaller branch, which was surrounded by cliffs and had no other exits. The other one was where Keia and Lean were. Once they think they've cornered us, we'll come from behind and take them down. If we are able to find their intentions before we attack, we can possibly determine if they deserve to live, but if not, then we may just have to kill them to be safe.
Medalanim turned back to Taren, eyes beaming. If my Rider still lived, he probably would have already had the trap in place. He was a master of scheming, but I think I've learned a bit. Do you think it will work?
------------------ Vaerin sniffed the cold mountain air, looking into the sky. Looming above him was a gigantic black cloud of residual magic, left from what a witness described to be the former subject of Galbatorix, Leanbrara changing to her true size.
The cloud tapered off in the distance deeply inside the Spine. Varin blinked and stood up, turning towards the troop of what he liked to call the Black Guard that followed him. Clothed in black armor that was silenced by even darker cloaks, they were enhanced in strength and speed like him, and their weapons were enhanced with foul curses and oaths that were meant to burn and dissolve draconic flesh. Several enchantments that were originally tested on Vaerin were used to create them, and although he felt slightly proud, they were without will, which disappointed him; they only followed orders and he knew it would inevitably lead them to their pointless deaths.
But when on a mission to kill dragon's they were needed, if just to distract them at least while Vaerin goes for the kill. A bloody mission awaited him anyways, set to end the lives of Keia, Lean and whomever they are travelling with. The lives of the men meant nothing, and the lives of the dragons he hunted he wanted gone.
"We're getting closer. Keep a closed formation and stay alert." Vaerin commanded, before running at a set, fast pace into the mountains.

Re: Looking for Answers
Taren thought about it for a moment, gauging how much strength it would take for such a feat and whether or not it would be too much for the local plant life to sustain. After a few minutes, he looked at Medalanim, grinning broadly. It is most certainly doable, but we need to get started immediately. Fly through the valley for me, would you? I'll use your movements to make the illusion as lifelike as possible, and my own for the second. To make them appear to be more than mirror copies of each other, I need two separate movement patterns, he said, leaping into the air as he spoke. He draped a net of magic over Medalanim and another over himself, each sending the gathered information to the spell of illusion he was working in his mind.
He flew slowly, letting the magic drift into the plants below. Almost as if they knew the importance of what was happening, they sucked the magic up like giant sponges, ready to relay it at a moment's notice. When he reached the end of the valley Medalanim had indicated, he pulled up and looked back at her. Let's go back now, I'll alter the images as we pass to resemble Lean and Keia, since they're the one's the king really wants, he said, turning and summoning up as clear a memory of the black and sienna dragons as he could.

Re: Looking for Answers
Medalanim nodded gleefully, letting a toothy grin part her lips. Lifting off the ground with a tremendous leap, she followed Taren's instructions to the letter, following him closely as they trailed down the valley to it's end and back.
She returned to the location where they had started, but instead of landing, she took a sharp turn back to the fork of the canyon and peered with the best of her ability for a perfect ambush spot. She growled with slight distaste at the fact that there wasn't a cave in sight that could hold both her and Taren together, but two separate caves close to each other high on the southern side of the entrance was adequate. On closer inspection, she found that it was going to be a tight fit, but they would just have enough room to be able to crawl out and fly quickly, and they would be in deep enough to not be seen by anyone down below.
As she turned to Taren, a faint discomforting smell entered her nostrils that caused her tail to twitch, and her body to already shudder with the thrill of war. I found our hiding locations. We better hurry; whatever is hunting us is closing in on the trail. Duck inside as best you can, and try and hide your mind to the best of your ability, as well as lowering your magic. Get ready for a fight. . .
Medalanim took her place in one of the crevices in the stone cliffs, and crammed her bulky form in until her snout was just barely covered in shadow. Her eyes narrowed from anticipation and she licked her lips, I've been waiting for this for far too long. . .
--------------- Vaerin's pace increased further to that of a horse in full gallop as he ran through the mountain foothills; trees, rocks, and streams passing by in a blur. The same went for his guard, always able to keep up, but never speaking a word.
Soon enough, he peered up and found himself at the entrance to the valley, who's walls glowed with the essences of four dragons in the air; one a brilliant yellow-gold appearing almost as a trail of burning wheat, another a black that mirrored the depths of a starless, moonless night, one bronze and brilliant as a polished breastplate, and one a shockingly bright electric indigo, that irked Vaerin with it's shimmering power. They were definitely close, possibly within sight if the dragons lifted into the air.
He slowed his pace to a walk to quiet the noise, the guards following suit in an almost mirror-like fashion, and while quietly giving off orders with sign language, drew one of many poisoned weapons from within his cloak. The hunt was on.

Re: Looking for Answers
Taren barreled towards the cave Medalanim had indicated, not bothering to slow himself. He could sense the same evil in the air that she could, now that it was closer. The wrongness of it had his scales itching from the tip of his snout to the base of his tail. He flared his wings at the last moment to drop a bit of speed, then pulled his wings in, clearing the edges of the cave with a few feet to spare. The bronze dragon grunted as he tried to turn around and face the mouth of the cave, a tough feat in such tight quarters.
When he was ready, he breathed in a measured breath and released, soon reaching a medatative state that when coupled with his impressive mental barriers, would hide his energy and consciousness. He was just alert enough to know when it was time to launch his spell, his bronze eyes staring almost sightlessly at the place where the two dragonesses would appear to take off. He sent a wisp of thought to Medalanim, I'm ready, just tell me when to activate the illusion.
