Does anyone here have any laptops?

What kind? What are some of the specs? What Operations system do you use?

I just got a Gateway P-6860FX

It came with Vista...i'm not a big fan of vista. So I decided to dual boot Linux (Ubuntu) it was nice. But I modified it to look like a Mac OS. I never really liked Mac but let me tell you, once you get used to it, it's VERY nifty.

Some of my specs are

Nvidia Gforce 8800 GTS Graphics Card
4 Gigs of Ram
1440x900 Resolution
17 inch screen
Duo Core Processor at 18 Ghz

Overall it's a pretty good setup. I can run Oblivion and Gears of War Maxed out. I can run Crysis mostly on high. It's nice.

It all boils down to what you want to do with it so you don't get ripped off.

I bought a 1500 dollar laptop because I wanted a lot of the stuff higher end so I could handle a lot of top end games.

If you don't want it for gaming, just word processor and internet you could probably get one a nice one for 7-800 dollars.

If you are in fact looking for gaming you can't go wrong with what I have, a different brand with the same features will run you around 2000 dollars. The Gateway P6860 FX is sold exclusively at Best Buy.

mine also has a screen, keys (w/ all letters and numbers) it even HAS speakers!!! it has microsoft word it can access the internet (including wireless oohh yeah baby im cool!!) LOL LOL

ok ok let me tell ya i have really no idea what i was saying i just wanted mine for school my bf, and i both have the same laptop!!! but i think his is a lil better then mine!! to be honest i didnt even want a dell (parents made me get it) i wanted a apple or sony but w/e i will have to get one one day when i get a real job!!!

Haha my laptop is a piece of crap by today's standards. I can barely run KOTOR and TSL, two of the three games I have. It is so slow, but the garbage graphics is what kills me. Maybe a graphics card I need, do you know any good ones?

Your laptop sounds like something I should have got for college Annie, it would have got the job done for schooling. Unfortunately I had to get the honkin 17 incher that weighs ten punds and cost 1500 dollars. But it gets gaming done so i'm happy

The best graphics cards around are Nvidia Gforce, the best one out right now is the 8800 GTX, but the 8800 GTS can handle almost anything aswell. There is a 9 series out, like the 9500, but beware, it's a marketing ploy. The 8800 GTS is actually more powerfull than the 9500, the 9500 just consumes less battery.

I forgot the mention, my Gateway has a 320 GB hardrive, and an empty hard drive port so I can add another hard drive if I would like.

How do you install a video card? Do you need to take the computer apart?

yep, and watch out, most powerfull computers require a slot that most older computers don't have.

I've got a Toshiba--for school (everyone at school has them). Its a tablet, which is KINDA useful, but....I'd have preferred other computers. Its new, but not the best of its year. And while I don't know the specs, the graphics card is a piece of cardboard. Literally. The laptop shuts down if I try to run C&C Generals. It barely starts running before I get the Blue Screen of Death. Its pretty bad. Its fine for just internet and school, but little else, unless I replace the graphics card.
