first define 'classics' then I will answer lol. I've read classics like narnia, LOTR, king arthur, catch 22, HHGTTG, inheritance trilogy 8) , harry potter if you would consider them modern classics. any other classics fit into the category?

I mean old classics, like Charles Dickens, Jane Austin, and Charlotte Bronte.

I'm a big Jane Austin fan, and I also like reading H.G. Wells. My favorite Austin books are Emma and Persuasion, what are yours?

I'm happy someone else likes them too! Persuasion and Northanger Abbey and Sense and Senseability are my favorites. What does H.G. Wells write?

I disagree on our accepted understanding of the term 'classic' because if classics are only old as we have made out, then we will soon lose all our classics as they disappear into the past.

Anyhow I have read Dickens, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (go sherlock), and H.G. Wells.

H.G. Wells was the man who singlehandedly made sci-fi what it is today. He was the one who created timeless classics like the Time Machine, Invisible Man, War of the Worlds, etc. I recommend his books to all of ya :D

Ok, classics don't have to be old, but those were the kind that I was talking about. The thing about old classics is that they were so good people kept reading them and pry will forever. Thanks for the info on H.G. Wells, I'll try to check them out. What books of Charles Dickens did you like?

yeah go WOTW!!! although i havent even seen the new movie yet lol

aminah i know what you mean abt classics so I wont debate it. yeah you have to read H.G. Wells although he is not a fantasy writer - scifi is a totally diff. genre with a totally different style... but anyway yeah check them out.

the main books that i like by charles dickens were probably oliver twist and david copperfield. I havent read nicholas nickleby or great expectations but I plan on reading them soon :D

My favorites by Charles Dickens were Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, I didn't like A Tale of Two Cities, those are all of his that I've read.

I really liked "The Count of Monte Cristo", by Alexander Dumas.

I didn't like Mark Twain, he was too racist. I don't know about LOTR, I didnt read them, I read The Hobbit and didn't like it so I wasn't interested in reading them. And I only read one of the Chronicles of Narnia, I think I was too old for them when I read it.

why do you say you were too old for narnia? lol are you 30 or something? and LOTR will always be classics - one of the foundations of classic fantasy. how can you like eragon and not like LOTR?

I never read LOTR but I didn't like the Hobbit so I didn't think I would like them either, first I thought I might just be weird or something, but then I saw a lot of people on this form that didn't like them either. Idk, CON seemed like they were written for like 10 yr olds.

I read CON when i was 9-10 and I reaaaallly adored them!!! Anyways, i read them again recently and i must admit I don't feel the "spark" as much as it affected me 10 years ago. I never read the Hobbit but i can assure you, that LOTR is great. :D

yes i agree. for me the second time is not so much for pleasure but a search to find what I missed out the first time. The first time is just to enjoy the adventure is it sweeps my imagination through the journey whereas when i read the second time i analyse each event and attempt to find symbolism / implications etc

what was it about the hobbit you didnt enjoy, aminah?

I finished WOTW, it was interesting but sort of boring, I guess I like fantasy better than science fiction.

Argetlam, did you get any books off that sight?

lol not yet... I haven't looked at it in detail yet. Tell me if there are any books you find interesting aminah. I guess sci-fi is not as action-packed as fantasy, but that depends on the author. HG Wells focuses more on the ideas, than the action and stuff.

Well most of the books I get off there are romances so I dont know if you would like them, but The Count of Monte Cristo is a really good book, and Wuthering Heights (it's a romance, but not all that romantic, someone called it "the strangest romance ever").

Were you asking about books I like in general, or just off that sight?

Yeah, it does seem like HG is more into the ideas than the action.

I love the old classics, too. I also liked Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and I love Jules Verne.

I guess Jane Austin and Charles Dickens are my favorites. Can't forget Mark Twain.

Vanity Fair is a great book. The Scarlet Letter is another fav.
There are just so many great novels, that's why they're called classics. Look at William Shakesphere, 400 yrs. later and we're still reading his work. I don't think he would have ever dreamed that possible.

Yes they are. Classics, classics, which ones have I not read? I read so many if I start I'll never end, that is without counting on the ones I've read in Spanish.

I am serious, give a book, a cup of black coffee and I am happy! :P

I like some classics, uncle Tom's cabin for example, but it has been a while since I read it. Maybe I would not enjoy it the second time as much.
I like Friedrich Schiller's "Die Räuber" as well. Does anyone know it?
And Jules Verne, I enjoyed reading his novels.
Oh, nearly forgot about Karl May! His novels are great! Especially the ones about Winnetou. ^^

I've read LOTR and The Hobbit, but honestly, I thought that LOTR was quite boring... The Hobbit is better, though.

Maybe it was so boring because of the German translation. It sometimes really sucks!

"Die Physiker" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt is really good. I had to read it in class, but I still think it's brilliant.

I've read Pit And The Pendellum by Edgar Allen Poe. You'd think that for being so famous and actually being included in history, this would be good. It was boring, wasn't scary. wasn't even spooky, had bad scripting and had a sucky ending.

I like all of Jane Austens books except for Emma!! I don't know why...no matter how hard I try to like I just cant. My favorite is Pride and Prejudice. I love that book. I've been reading sequels to it and can't wait for the next sequel I find. I've also read Jane Eyre. I really liked that book.

first define 'classics' then I will answer lol. I've read classics like narnia, LOTR, king arthur, catch 22, HHGTTG, inheritance trilogy 8) , harry potter if you would consider them modern classics. any other classics fit into the category?

whats "Catch 22" about? is it a good book or series?
