Eragon vs Harry? that would be interesting. lets see, as much as I like Eragon, Harry might have more of a shot than you guys think. (don't get me wrong I LOVE the eragon books them and h.p are my favorite, of course eragon sometimes bugs me and i manly read for the coolest character in the world: Murtagh)
see, Harry doesn't have a limit on his magic, he won't tire as far as using magic goes, but his flaw there is, he has to know how to do it where eragon can just put words together so eragon might be faster in that. And then there is Saphira, if Eragon had her harry would go down in a sec....well maybe not, Harry did win against the Horntail, but that dragon wasn't as smart as Saphira or as Fast. hmmm, Harry is good with a sword, but he hasn't had the training Eragon has so Eragon would kill him there. So far it looks like Eragon would win, but Harry has something that lets himw in every fight, I call it 'Dumb- Luck' and this might help him a great deal :D lol, I think it could be anybody's game...

or do u mean the books vs each other? in that case, right now Harry is winning cause his books have been out longer and their well known. Get a class full of ppl, everyone has heard of harry, whether they have read the books or not, and half have heard of Eragon. But i think when the movie comes out every one wil be rushing to read eragon, so again, i ts anybody's game.

and i think I got a little to into this, im going to go now, bye

I would have to say Lord of the Rings! I read the book (its was kinda hard though...lol) and the director did a great job on keeping to the story. With Harry Potter ( I read those too ) they seemed to have left SO MUCH out! I mean I really enjoyed all the HP books too! Thats why I am so worried about the new Eragon movie. I can only cross my fingers in hopes that they will stay as close to the book as possible. I know some things are impossible to put on film but I hope they can at least not leave anything important out.

Don't be angrey peeps, but I had to go with HP because aside from Eragon, there just aren't many books where teenagers kick butt.

I am first and foremost a Harry Potter fan. It was through Harry Potter that I read LOTR, the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis and many others, as JK mentioned she was influenced by a movement called "the Inklings," in which both authors were part of, so I decided to read them all.

Back in Puerto Rico, since English is not the first language, our school reading were more into the classics such as the Grapes of Wrath, Moby Dick, The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, etc, etc, etc.
When I started teaching almost all my reading was informational or to complement for classroom puposes. My leisure reading in English were mostly romantic novels, the rest were all titles in Spanish.

If I would be forced to say which book is better, I would be in trouble. The styles are different and directed towards different audiences. Most of the LOTR craze cropped up with the movies and therefore many were inspired to read the books and there is a lot more than just the Hobbit, Fellowship, Two Towers and the Return of the King.

Tolkein develop a complete world and has many additional books of the Middle Earth and what happened in what age. The man dedicated all his life to create this mythological world to the last T. He was a genius. Pity he never got to see how his books suceeded.

JK Rowling never thought (she says so in her interviews) the Potter series would turn into the phenomenom they have. However, as an author she also has her merits, just in a different category.

Just my humble opinion. :D

The Harry Potter series is funnier (mostly the 6th book), but the Lord of the Rings is the epic struggle of good vs. evil throughout the world. The Harry Potter series seems to be concentrated in Britian which makes it feel smaller to me.

Well yes, but it's a completely different style, isn't it? I mean- Harry Potter is set in the real world, which is why it's just around london. LOTR is all over middle earth and where-ever.

HP is a lot easier to read
LOTR is a lot more in depth and means a lot more

Plus I like books where I can relate to where they are set, because I live near it. In HP, I know what little whinging is like because I've been there, so it's just easier to imagine. Also in the Power of 5 books, i live really near Ipswich which is where some of it is set- I've never been to anywhere in LOTR lol

LOTR is probably best overall, but HP is easier to read *and* hopefully won't leave you hanging as much as Tolkein did.

HP is for fun and not-serius-reading
LOTR is for those which seek a world full of magic, creatures (only one thing I don't fogive HP...elfs! For....couldn't they say that they are something else not elfs??) and descriptions. For those which really have time and joy to books.

lotr definatly they actually go places. and wat in the world how do all the 4th years fit in a room wit only like 6 or 7 beds, and i thought a lot of ppl come to hog warts from wat u see on the trains and how do humans not notice when they go in the brick pillar. and why would they be standing ur supposed to be slick. lotr on other hand explains stuff and every one has a story even in the game like how bilbo got the ring of power. they should have a story of ow harry's parents met and had him. and then how they got hary a god father.and they should how they become enemies wit voldemort. they shouldnt allways have the camera on harry they should have it on other things i mean there is not a singel part in a hp movie except when he has visions.lotr has a lot of ppl on a lot of places so u can actually know wat is happening every where not just in one spot. and its stupid if u can say avada kadivara to kill any one why doesn't some one just go up to voldemort and say it and kill him no big deal. but in lotr there is a reason for everything.and if u cant jjust go up to voldemort and do that they should show a REASON. any way lotr is much better period.

wow huge post

LOL! Boy, it's been some time since I'd seen you on the boards. Hope you're enjoying your summer.

I am a huge Potter fan but I do not resent when other people differ from me. I think I mentioned that LOTR was a series which I forced myself to finish by a matter of principle. I did love the Biography of R.R. Tolkein. The man was a genius and his creativity was out of the limits of this world

I guess it's just I like the style of lotr, because my speech is a little more intelectual than most people and reading something from Tolkiens time is much more of a challenge for me, which I like.

LOL! What are you trying to tell me? Is it that I have a very circumscribed vocabulary? Granted, English is not my first language, but I think I've done a pretty good job of its' usage.

It was not the vocabulary what put me off; it was the pages and pages of descriptive paragraphs.

I'm not saying you have a bad or poor vocabulary it's just most people even with large and intelectual vocabulary don't seem to like a book written when the english language was so different.

You read more books you'll get a larger vocab. Anyway the LOTR is much better than Harry Potter, Harry Potter is sorta boring. But I really don't like either of them. They're both sorta boring.

HARRY POTTER THROUGH AND THROUGH! I was just pulling your leg!! That's for people who don't bother to look up words they are not familiar with in the dictionary. Even though I have fairly good dictionary skills, I like to use Merriam-Webster online dictionary. It gives the etymology of the words and the various pronunciations and variations of Old English.

I was just pulling your leg HaydenBlowers! I can certainly understand what you mean. I am a dictionary freak and I have a few dictionaries in different languages. That's one of the main reasons it took me so long to finish the LOTR series. When I was not familiar with a word, I stopped, looked it up and tried to fit the definition into the content of the sentence.

If I'd keep having to use a dictionary to find what the word meant I'd just guess what it meant.

I know the books are hard to follow. It uses a lot of old English, but I got the tapes, I would say a week ago and you cannot believe the difference it makes. I was not aware I had missed so many things when I first plowed through them. After I heard them, I've fallen in love with the series and Middle-Earth! It has been well worth going through them again.

It was your fault I chose to buy those. I couldn't get round to re-reading the series, but I'm telling you, THANKS!!
I mean the poems and songs are beautiful. In the takes, the reader actually sings them; you can close your eyes and they take you into the story.
It's been very worth it it. Now I'm looking for books that explain more about Middle-Earth.

Get the Silmarilion. I've heard that it was good (I think it takes place before the hobbit)

Today I saw a couple of books Tolkein wrote before he did The Hobbit and TLOR! But they're expensive! I may get one or two before Christmas thoug. The others will have to wait for the employee big discount day! I wrote that title and I'll check it out tomorrow! Thanks for the recommendation. :D

I have never read HP because, frankly, it seems childish and rather stupid.
LOTR on the other hand is aimed at ALL ages not just children, is sooo real I want to believe it, has lasted years and years and is STILL a best seller, from hat I heard LOTR has much more depth to it than HP.
Did you know Tolkien spent basically his ENTIRE LIFE writting LOTR and so I think it desrves ALOT more respect than HP.
Besides that the characters in HP have no morals unlike the characters in LOTR.
LOTR will rule 4EVER!!!!!
LOTR is the bestselling book of all time under the Bible.
I rest my case. :)

well I wouldn't say the characters have no morals, but it seems that the characters in lotr just have more of an inner turmoil or trouble, than they do in hp. Making them seem alot more real to me.
And alot more interesting to read about.

BUT in HP they are always lying, cheating, or doing things they are told not to.
I have read parts in it so I am not just saying this out of what I have heard.
In LOTR the ppl R loyal, true and kind.

I like LoTR better. I actually havent read or seen any of the HP stuff. My mom has this thing against magic and wizerds and stuff like that. When she told me that I was like "HELLO! What the heck is LoTR then, hmm?" there's magic and wizards in that, too.

My mother dosen't like the 'special rules for special people' factor in the HP series. In the LOTR everyone is a hero, from the tiniest hobbit to the tallest elf

I agree LOTR is like for everybody and it doesn't single out the special people either, everyone is special.

I never liked the way they portrayed wizards and magical creatures in the HP stuff. I liked how everyone was either trying to help each other or kill each other in the lotr. Nobody hid in a secret world

has to be harry potter. If you were to see my room you would just shake your head. but the reason why i got interested in the Inheritance is because its close to harry potter and if i would have never read harry potter and got interested in it. I would probably not be reading Eragon and Eldest.

LOTR. The books are better then the movies, but the movies are quite good too. In other parts of the forum, we talk about the changes of Eragon, LOTR got it worse.

Ummm... Ladyofthelost? He didn't attack Dumbledore. He trashed his office because his godfather had just died and he was mad at Dumbledore because he felt it was somehow Dumbledore's fault. But it was idiotic that J.K. Rowling killed off Dumbledore. And I heard a rumor that after all Harry has been through, he and Voldemort are going to die simultaneously. (At the same time)

The title of the 7th installment of Harry Potter has been released.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the title of the seventh and last installment of the series.

I've been thinking so musch on the possible implications of the title that I can feel a migrame coming forth. Speculation on the Harry Potter sites is that the release may be on
October 31st, 2007. If this is so, it means almost another year in waiting!!!!

Lotr > HP by far.

Lotr- Tip of perfection. Quite possibly the best books ever written. Takes place in medieval times. (+2), has fully developed characters (+3), has backup storyline "bilbo taking ring from golum... Sauron first losing..etc" (+4)

HP- Modern times (+2), Fairly developed characters (+2), Funny jokes (+1), Almost no backup story line "hp parents die" (-1).

LOTR- 9
HP- 5

Harry Potter. Because LotR books were boring. And Harry Potter has a more in-depth plot.

I liked them both, but I like Harry Potter more. It does move kinda slow, but I haven't read lord of the rings in forever, so that kinda has something to do with it I guess.

The LotR series takes place in a different world. I like the Potter series 10X's more!

LOL!! There is no reason why an argument should take place. This topic is about personal opinion and preference! I, for young like both series, but I find them to be different. So I like Harry Potter a lot more than LotR; but I would never dream of putting down the LOTR series. It's outstanding

LOTR is ten times better than HP. first of all, it's plot is more engaging. second, the battles are bigger. third, it's older. fourth, GANDALF IS A BETTER MAGICIAN THAN HARRY POTTER! there are are probably others, but I can't think of them.
