Dark Places of the World
OOC: For anyone who decides to join, though I suggest you pick characters that have a strong will or something worthwhile to live for (Even if they discover it during the course of the thread). I plan to make this a test of a characters mental endurance and ability to stay sane and in control of himself. I plan on making this thread as twisted and evil as I can. (By evil I don't necessarily mean deeds by Evil characters, but the things done to the characters within it.)
When everyone joins and the characters get deep enough into the forest I'll start things off.
IC:A small, crushed patch of grass was the only thing that stood out where Nilarek stood. It stuck out the opening of a cave trying to gather what light it could, though Nilarek knew it wouldn't be long before it died. The cave itself looked to him as though it was a portal to the Shadow Realm, though he could see well enough in it to know that it didn't go very far into the ground. A burrow for some poor creature that tried to make this area into it's home. It was cold here, cold enough for snow, yet none fell. Nilarek had to rely on either magic or his flames to keep himself warm.
He tried to remind himself why he was here, yet no answers came. All he could say was that he saw what looked to be a small patch of black and greying trees that had no entrance from the air in it. He had no fear of the dark places of the world as none could possibly compare to the infinite darkness of the Shadow Realm, yet his place still set his scales on edge.
When he entered from the ground, the trees were a lot taller than he had imagined, but nothing much else out of the ordinary aside. Not much light came through the trees which gave the area the semblance of a graveyard. When he turned around to find his way out though, he couldn't find it. Even after he sprinted through the forest, he couldn't get to the edge. In fact, the only thing he had seen that could have been any kind of marker to where he was was the small cave he now stood beside.
Everything he looked at now had a sense of un-reality to it. Almost as if he was looking at an illusion. The only semblance of reality he could get was that when he cast a spell to find any magic in the area he couldn't feel anything. When he tried to escape the trees above him the branches seemed to lash out at him, cutting his wings to shreds. Nilarek knew that they hadn't grown that way naturally, but there was nothing he could do to stop it. The branches were too thick and tough like steel.
So here Nilarek sat, trying to think his way out of a maze that he had no idea how far into he was.

Re: Dark Places of the World
OOC: I hope you do not mind if I join with Arnon and Tamar, I would like for then to experience a truly tough trial. Not to mention Arnon already has a bad taste in his mounth about Nilarek.
IC: Arnon had been following the shadows for some time now. It had been months since he had last sighted Nilarek and Arnon was still wanting a rematch with the other shade. This time Arnon felt like he had an even chance of beating the other in fair combat. The shade read the path of shadows just like a map and he followed them until they came to a cave. The shade rider looked oddly at the cave and said to Tamar, There is something odd about this cave. But the path the shadows show tell me that Nilarek is in there. said the shade rider to his dragon.
It could be a trap. said the small red dragoness cautiously. We should proceed with great care if we do follow. Nilarek could have known we were following him. There is no telling what that shade knows. He is very old and very powerful. Said the dragon as the two of them entered the cave.
When they walked into the cave, they saw themselves in an extremely dark place. Never before had they been in such a dead-like place. The two of them stared around in wonder at the decaying forest around them as well as at the dead grass below them. Then, as businesslike as ever Arnon began to follow the shadows once more and he entered the evil-looking trees with Tamar right behind him.

Re: Dark Places of the World
At first glance, Hawke was almost sure he had seen the glimmer of scales.
He had even convinced Elisa to fly closer to the trees so that he could get a closer look. Despite her brief protests, Elisa had eventually consented and descended slightly in her flight, hovering just a few feet over the trees. Hawke attempted to peer through the dense foliage, and there he saw it again. The sparkle of light dancing across the scales of a dragon. Not only that, but he thought that he might recognize the dragon.
When he voiced his thoughts to Elisa, she was nothing short of skeptical. Hawke had told her that the dragon resembled one they had might not too long ago, a dragon by the name of Nilarek. Yet, he also wasn't a dragon. No matter, curiosity soon began to get the best of the young dragoness, and she squinted to try and make out the form of the dragon that lay in the trees.
She began to grow frustrated, for the trees and leaves were simply too thick. Elisa roared before swinging her tail through a canopy of leaves and branches, severing them. When she tried to look through the trees once more, she felt something grab her tail. She reacted quickly, but she wasn't fast enough to avoid the mass onslaught of branches and twigs as they wrapped around her and rendered her near immobile. Then, they dragged Elisa inside, despite her protests.
Hawke began to grow frantic when the branches started moving of their own accord. He shouted off several spells, but he didn't have enough energy to free Elisa, nor could he calmly think of a clever-enough spell while being dragged down by multiple branches. Finally, they emerged inside the forest, and Elisa immediately turned and tried to fly out. However, the trees blocked her path, and she was once more grabbed by a thick trunk. This time, however, she was violently thrown to the ground.
Hawke let out a small groan as he slid from Elisa's back and unfastened her saddle. It was then that he noticed Nilarek. Hawke pointed up, referring to the trees surrounding them, "Do you know how to get out of here?" he asked.

Re: Dark Places of the World
OOC: Not at all, I love it when characters clash together. Gives them more depth.
A maze without end, or without an edge at least? He thought briefly before other thoughts came through his mind as well. An illusion spell that forces you to turn around as you approach the end? No, I sensed no magic involved. It almost feels as if the forest itself is shifting itself, but again, no magic. No Shadow Energies either, or Dark Magic. Something is making this forest move, or altering my perception, yet it isn't anything that I've seen before, or even had a plan of before... I wonder if- His thought was cut-off abruptly as a crashing through the trees above him took his attention. Before he could figure out what was happening, a dragon was pushed through the trees and deposited on the ground next to him with a thundering crash. It took him a second to realize that there was a rider attached to the dragon as well. Hawke and Elisa. Previous enemy, though he wondered what the situation would be now...
"Do you know how to get out of here?"
Nilarek looked at them for a moment as they sorted themselves out and said surprisingly calmly; No. I've been trying to think my way out of this place, though I haven't had much success. The branches up high are too thick to break through and if you keep walking in one direction, well... I'm not exactly sure, but I haven't been able to find the way I came in.

Re: Dark Places of the World
Arnon quit observing his surroundings and then once again turned his attention to the miniscule ammounts of shadow magic which followed all shades, and even some of the creatures of the shadow realm. The shade stopped when he saw the creatures ahead. There was a rider, a dragon, and from what he could tell from the trail of shadows, Nilarek. However, instead of reacting with apprehension to his approach Arnon saw that there was something more. So rather than just charge into battle as one without honor or the skill of the sword. So he calmly approached. The shade rider said, "What is this place?"
Tamar approached and snorted a black stream of fire toward the other dragon and flexed her claws. This place un-nerved her, and that had to mean something.

Re: Dark Places of the World
OCC: I'll join with Fletcher. He's got a lot of willpower to have survived what Agatha did to him. Now, does this take place during the books or after the books?
IC: The gryphon flew low over the forest searching for prey. However, there was something strange about this place that Fletcher did not like. He could feel a dark presence here. The air had become cold and clammy. Ordinarily it would not have bothered him. His fur and feathers were usually more than enough to keep him warm. But this... this was something entirely different. it was a cold that chilled the gryphon down to the bone. The gryphon suddenly thought he heard a faint cry for help. He couldn't make it out though and it was difficult to tel where it had come from. The forest below had become so dense that Fletcher could not see the floor. He wanted to leave this place, to be far away from here with his mate. But if someone was in trouble, he could not just leave them to die in this dark place. Swallowing his fear, the gryphon dived down toward a small opening in the trees. it was the only opening he could find that was large enough for him to fit through. He spread his wings and gently touched down on the cold ground. Immediately the gryphon began to look around. The forest around him was dark and eerie but he could see no signs that anyone was here. He flexed his ears, trying to pick up some sound but there was nothing other than the sound of his own breathing.
I must have imagined it. the gryphon thought to himself.
He reached out with his mind, trying to find the person but it only made the dark presence here seem even more powerful. There was no sign of any people anywhere nearby. Fletcher decided that it would be best to leave this place but when he turned around, the opening through which he had entered the forest was gone.
What? he thought to himself. How can that be? It was just there!
The gryphon spread his wings and flew up to the high branches, trying to claw his way through but it was as if this place didn't want him to leave. The branched entangled the gryphon each time he tried to escape, pulling him back down. Fletcher thrashed fiercely, tearing at the branches with his talons and beak until he cut himself free, falling back to the forest floor with a thud. He laid there panting and looking around for any way out but there was none. Slowly the gryphon got to his feet and began to wander among the trees. He flicked his tail in annoyance and let out a silent curse. There had to be a way out of here. Despite the eerie darkness that surrounded the trees, Fletcher remained strong. He had been through hell and back while Agatha held him prisoner. The numerous scars on his front legs were a testament to that. He wasn't going to let some dark shadows scare him. He had to find out what was going on here...

Re: Dark Places of the World
Nirexi's explanation did nothing to ease any of Hawke and Elisa's suspicions. Well, surely if you walk in one direction long enough, then you're bound to find a way out Hawke noted to Elisa. Elisa snorted in response, flickering her tail around like a whip, Theoretically. However, we don't know what lurks in this forest. Since we can't scout with our minds, we could just be walking into a trap. If we do decide to move, it should obviously be done with caution. It was then that someone else approached. He was human, but the smell of a dragon was evident on him, so it was possible that he was a Rider.
At his question, Hawke shrugged his shoulders. "That's what we're trying to figure out. Nothing about it seems good though," he added in an undertone. Hawke glanced in a direction where he thought he had heard a thud, similar to the sound Elisa had produced when she had been thrown to the ground. However, Hawke couldn't check with his mind because of some darkness that kept him from doing so. Therefore, Hawke was content to sit still for a moment and wait for Nirexi to voice his thoughts about what they should do. The shade-dragon knew more about this area than Hawke, little though the difference might be.

Re: Dark Places of the World
I told you, if you weren't listening. I've tried that, I've sprinted for hours on end in one direction yet I haven't found the exit to this place. In fact the only thing I've seen in this accursed forest is this small cave I'm standing next to! Nilarek hated explaining himself twice. He let it slide as much as he could though. At least until someone else entered their little ground. Nilarek could tell simply by the way he walked that he was no mere mortal. The dragon next to him, spouting black flames also spoke of something unnatural. You reek of death. I like that. He spoke coldly. And I have no idea what this place is yet. It feels magical, yet it doesn't. Every attempt I've tried to escape has failed, so I have to assume it's some sort of trap.
With that, he heard something failing in the trees, an all too familiar sound he thought. Soon after, there was a thud. Nilarek cursed his senses, for even though they were accurate, they couldn't tell where the creature had landed. He caught himself wishing, if only for a moment, that he had his Shadow abilities back, but quickly pushed those thoughts aside. They came at too high a price. Did anyone else hear something hit the ground?

Re: Dark Places of the World
Arnon looked at Nilarek and the rider and dragon and then said, "But if this is a trap. Who or what could be behind it, and more importantly who is powerful enough to create this illusion, of maze?" asked the shade rider. He looked back to where soft thud wa heard and said, "Yes, I do believe someone or something just joined us." Arnon wanted to kill Nilarek, as well as the others there but he could not do so yet. He had to be sure that he could get out of here before he killed the others, or he would escape and leave them here. This could be a useful prison to contain his enemies, or better yet to torture them.
Tamar hissed when she felt Arnon's thoughts. This place could indeed prove useful to us if we can find out way out we might be able to seal the gap and make this an inescapable prison.

Re: Dark Places of the World
Fletcher walked onward through the dark forest. He could see daylight shining through the branches and foliage but there was no way out that he could see. The gryphon felt that dark forces were at work here. Fletcher paused when he thought he heard voices ahead. His ears perked up and he listened intently, lashing his tail as he stood perfectly still. Yes, someone was definitely talking ahead. He was not imagining things. Cautiously and quietly, or at least as cautiously and quietly as a creature the size of a horse could manage, the gryphon crept toward the voices, hoping to finally figure out what was going on. Fletcher picked up several scents as he approached. Some were dragon and others were human. At least two of them had a rather unnatural scent though and it Fletcher found it unsettling. He could sense the darkness in them. Still, from what he could hear they seemed to be lost as well. Slowly the gryphon walked forward and approached the strangers, hoping they would not attack him on sight.

Re: Dark Places of the World
Hawke blinked at Nilarek's retort. Ah, right, Hawke replied sheepishly. He had forgotten that the dragon wasn't particularly good company to be around. Just then, someone else approached, a red dragon next to the man. The color of red on the dragon was a blood-red, and Hawke wondered if that gave any reflection of the dragon's personality. Hawke rolled his eyes at Nilarek's comment to the dragon. Great. We're surrounded by slaughter-hungry savages and trapped in a forest without an exit, Hawke privately drawled to Elisa.
We need to get along with them all if we want any hopes of getting out of here, she swiftly replied to Hawke, still in a private conversation.
Hawke nodded absently to Nilarek's question. "Can't tell where the sound came from though," Hawke murmured.
Then a creature approached that Hawke was sure he hadn't seen before. It was the size of a horse, with feathery, eagle-like wings. Its head was like a bird's with a beak and everything. Its back end looked to be of a different animal species then the front side did. Is it an inhabitant of the forest? he wondered to himself. He immediately dismissed the idea, however, for its feathers were ruffled and it looked like it had been in a recent struggle. Hawke figured that it had gotten forced down here like Elisa had. "Hey. Was that you making all the noise? It sounded like a rough landing," Hawke muttered. He wasn't sure if the being was capable of human speech or not, but he supposed that he'd figure out soon enough.

Re: Dark Places of the World
OOC: Another round of posts and I'll start this thing off.
Even if I knew who created this elaborate maze, Nilarek said to Arnon, his face completely unimpressed, would it truly matter? Even if the fates delivered them into our lap, this place would take far too much energy for mortal beings to sustain.
Nilarek stood and faced the new-comer, a Gryphon, though not one he knew. And another falls into the trap, or so we would be lead to believe. What's your name anyway? You would best know that mine is Nilarek and while an extra set of eyes always helps, if your claws aren't sharp then you had best reconsider joining us.

Re: Dark Places of the World
Fletcher glanced around at the assortment of strangers and when one of the dragons spoke and introduced himself, Fletcher replied, "My name is Fletcher. I take it none of you know what is going on here either. I thought I heard a cry for help and decided to investigate. The next thing I knew, the tree swallowed me up and would not release me!"
He then nodded at Nilarek's remark. "I am a capable fighter. I can hold my own against foes both larger and stronger than myself."
The gryphon looked up at the tiny patches of sky he could see through the foliage. He thought about his mate. What would Sevena think when he did not return home tonight? What if she came looking for him and got trapped here too? Fletcher quickly banished those thoughts from his mind. He could not afford to let his thoughts wander in this place.
