ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Today I was trying to organize my apartment, for reasons too long to explain, and I was about to go bonkers with all the stuff my daughter will be taking back this year to her dorm. Is it her or do you guys have tons of stuff too!
Can you list them?

Haha! I'm a freshman and I move into the dorms on August 31. I really don't know what is normal to bring and what isn't! But, I've been packing my stuff and I think I have WAY too much! I'd list it, but it would take a long time. But I've pretty much got everything from clothes to deoderant to school supplies to dishes to my computer to nail clippers!!! Just want to be prepared!! LOL!

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Haha, I am probably the only college kid who won't bring too much stuff. BUt it is a lot: like fantasymist said, it runs the table from razors, to books, to this computer, to clothes, detergent, school supplies, the 18 cords I need for everything to work right, some money, sheets, and the list goes on. I'll be surprised if we can make it all fit to be honest I forgot food, like a bit box of oatmeal for the morning. Exciting, isn't it! And the printer we have to have. and shoes, and the boots for obvious reasons. and a lamp, organisers my parents insisted on, phone, and etc. Yeah, i'll end up with too much stuff. ............*head explodes*...............

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Yeah...can't forget food! Yeah, the dining hall serves meals, but what do you do at 11 o'clock at night? Yeah...so add to the list a mini fridge and a microwave! And don't forget to bring pillows/blankets, shampoo, aspirin (you know we'll need it eventually!), alarm clock!!!! chargers for phone/mp3 player etc... and decorations(unless you like plain white walls!!)
This list just keeps getting bigger and bigger!!! Moving day is NOT going to be fun. LOL!
Oddly enough, I could really care less about how much clothes and shoes I bring! Just as long as I have enough to wear so I don't have to wash clothes every other day! I'm more worried about how many books I should bring!!! LOL! I can't live without my books, but I don't know how much space I will have!!!

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Last night I rented a storage unit in order to get all the extra stuff out of my way and 3/4ths of it is packed with her stuff, and we're still not done. I have her fridge sitting in a corner of my kitchen and she still has under-the- bed storage boxes in her bedroom, one box with Idk what, and the box in which the groceries go. This year she will not be rooming with anyone. She chose a single, and that may be the reason why she has more stuff than last year. She even bought one of these funky chairs where she can plug in her iPod, the PS, the Cube box and all the other stuff. She's carrying with a new flat screen, (which according to her makes the games look sharper, (whatever) , her sound system, microwave, toaster over, bookcases, an 8 X 10 rug, shades, curtains, a floor lamp, dishes, vacuum cleaner, etc, etc, etc.. When she finishes college she will probably have enough stuff to furnish a one bedroom apartment. Geeze... Her sister's house was broken into a week and a half ago and her laptop was stolen, so now I need to buy her a new one. But I intend to make her sweat a bit. She may have to use my desktop until then, because I am certainly not yielding MY laptop. I am still angry at both of them! Anyway, I just cannot remember all the other stuff we've been hauling since yesterday.

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Well, that makes sense. Since she has a single room, why not fill it with stuff?? I would too! You don't have to worry as much about space or what your roommate is going to want. Wish I had a flat screen TV! I don't even HAVE a TV...although I'm probably going to get one. And I would definately have a bookcase if I had the room for it!!! LOL!

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Well, she's got a single this year because we requested it waaaaay in advance. Her experience with roommates was downright horrendous.
BTW, doesn't the college give you the information of who your roommate is going to be? Alex's school did that last year. They mailed her the name and the contact information on the girl. They met at a restaurant and boy, was she a deceiver. The least of all the things was her being a heavy drinker and bringing in people who were not part of the student body. It got to the point where Alex went to the residence life office and requested to be changed.
She then got moved in with a girl who would refuse to turn on the A/C. Alex had to go twice to the emergency room, due to the fact that extreme temperatures triggers her asthma. This girl refused to use the dorms bathing facilities, so she would go home on Wednesday and return to the dorm on Sunday or Monday morning. So from Sundays (or Mondays) she would not take a bath. And with the heat up to 88ยบ, the room did not smell pretty.
To all this, I found out because Alex let slip that she was sleeping in one of her girlfriend's room. I had invited group of her friends to have lunch with us on Alex's birthday, and she mentioned she needed to pad the SLEEPING BAG! I hit the roof!
So a friend of Alex's was also having situations with her roommate and they decided to request to be placed together in another room. This one was fine until she made up with her boyfriend. He would sleep overnight in the dorm and Alex would have to haul out the sleeping bag, again. This time it was I who discovered the guy sleeping a weekend when Alex was home. He was asleep on her roommate's bunk with Alex's sound system blasting.
Result; we requested a single for this year. So hopefully she will be better off this year.

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Everyone tells roomate horror stories, doesn't anyone get a good one the first time? That's kind of a joke, but my parents have said the same thing. They both had several insanse roomates, from one guy who would leave the window open all the time(in NY winter -the snow would blow in ), to one guy wouldn't bathe and never turn off the fan, to one girl who would come back drunk or high and pick fights with people. And there's a couple more. I'll just have to wait and see. Wow. I just want to know WHERE all these idiots come from. Do they just pop out of the woodwork or something? Heh, maybe it's some sort of test they put freshman through.(a half joke)

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Guess there are some exceptions...My oldest daughter went to Purdue University, in Indiana. She had a girl from Bolivia as roommate and they hit it off from day one. So much that Valeria was Shaira's best maid in her wedding, together with Joe, a guy from Ski Lanka. Valeria is godmother to her first child as is Joe.
Guess Alex did not have good luck. Then seeing that she is so structured, neat and picky with her things, (just like her mom) she just threw in the towel and said she did not want a repeat of last year.

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
WoW! That sounds like some really bad roommate luck!! And yeah, most colleges tell who you are rooming with, don't they? Mine did at the end of July...well, for most people. My friend didn't get hers until yesterday.
Anyways, I hope that my roommie and I get along. I've talked to her through Facebook a lot, and we seem to have a freakishly lot in common. Plus, I know that I won't have to worry about her being an alcoholic and drinking all the time, because I'm living in an alcohol-free dorm by request. (My first choice was the Eco Hall, but I didn't get it....
So, hopefully I won't have any horror stories to tell about my first roommate!

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
I just got to college yesterday, so far it's been a blast...
I got to bed at 4, had an army test at 7...my roommate and I decided we shouldn't do that anymore. lol.
He's really cool, we have a lot in common, but enough differences to make things interesting. I'm very happy with my roommate, moving in wasn't too difficult. So far life at college is looking pretty sweet.

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
I would reccommend against that.
I joined a "learning community" a program where we are all doing a lot of the same stuff (Army ROTC) We are such a tight knit community, we're great friends, we have so much in common, but our backgrounds are so diverse.
If you stay with people you know, then you never step out of your shell and make new friends.

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Yeah, I agree. I'm going to college states away from my house, my closest old friends are in Pittsburgh.(Which is at least 2 or three hours from my location) It's really not fun at times lol, but it is good meeting new people. It helps in the end though. or at least I think it does off to class...

As good of a friend maker you may be, it's still easier to step out of your shell if your away from what you know.
I'm sure if I were even on the same floor as people I know, I wouldn't have made the incredible friends I did this last week.

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
I have an idea of how it goes for younger ones, seeing that Sabrina is starting her second year, and boy does she gets stressed at time. Specially when Mid-terms and finals show their ugly face. But as an adult going to the University after a full-days work, it's hard. The program I'm following is a lot more intense since our courses are shorter therefore they are so packed it gets to your nerves. I think the worse pressure is more personal for adults, (at least for me). You have everyone following how well you do, besides there is a constant reminder of how much it's costing, how you should not have anything lower than a B and the pressure of doing better than your kids. At least that's how I feel. I am always aware I have to set an example for my kid.
I do know that there are so many activities and things going on for young ones though and it can be both good, and not so good. I would think it's a matter of trying to keep a balance between fun and studying.

Wow I never looked at it in that perspective, but that does explain ur situation. But I don't think u have to worry about setting such a great example, because u probably already have, being how great and smart u are.

LOL!!! I guess I'm a masochist of some kind. I finish my BA next March and I'm already looking into graduate school. I got it into my head to do a Master's on Early Childhood Development.
I'm still not 100% positive on doing this, it's going to cost me my other arm and a leg!

It depends on what you want to do I guess, whether a Masters is necessary for the job you want or the BA will suffice. Or if the Masters will get you a better job, you know what I mean.

You see the thing is that I LOVE dealing with children, and I also so LOVE teaching. I haven't gone into teaching here in the States because of the whole thing with the state's standards and the NCLB Act. Now teachers spend most of their time teaching kids to test well. As a result, the joy of teaching just to extend the love of learning to children has had to be placed on the back burner. As a direct result we have more kids hating school and all it brings. Then these state standardized tests do not take into account the ELL, children with LD, and the multiple intelligences in kids. I am so against it, I'd rather try something completely not related to all this crap these people have com up with.
So I really don't have a clue what's it going to be. But I have a few months to think about it, I guess...

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Today is Sept. 2nd so there is no danger of any Mods yelling at me for double posting, he-he!
AAAAAAnyway, I took some pictures of Sabrina's dorm when I dropped her off this week-end. As I mentioned before she is alone in her room but the same is designed to hold two students. So she has double everything and uses what she needs at her convenience.

Re: ATTENTION ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS!! New and not so new!
Wow. Lots of stuff. Nice set up. I'm in my dorm right now too. I'm sharing mine with a roommate who is pretty cool actually. The great thing is that we were lucky enough to get a lounge room! We have lots of personal space, it's great! The only cruddy thing is that we are on the third floor in one of the furthest halls from the dining hall! O-Well. It's pretty good.
We are in an alcohol-free dorm, and everyone is really fun and social. We've been doing lots of hall activities and stuff. More so than all the other halls, or so I've heard from some of my friends. It's pretty fun.
Anyways, I had my first two classes today. One was an Intro to Natural Resources course which wasn't bad. The second one was American Politics. It wouldn't have been so bad if the Chinese instructor hadn't spent the first 15 min of class talking about the Olympics and how American athletes are different from Chinese athletes. How exactly does that fit with American Politics?? He also said "uh" a lot. Pretty much after every third or fourth word he would pause and say "uhh..." It was really annoying!
