Post Shadow of a man
OOC: To any who want to join, just know that there is a plan for this thread which cannot be stopped. I thought about writing this in Fan-fic, but I thought it better if someone were around for it.

The ground beneath him made a crunching sound as he walked over the ashes of a recently burnt house. It wasn't a very large house, though the occupants hadn't had time to escape. Or they couldn't. Ret thought as he saw the group of bones in one corner of the house. There were enough for two adults and a child, though some of the bones were out-right missing. Incinerated by the fire.
I'll find you yet, I'm getting closer. Ret thought as he moved away from the ashes, following a path of destruction and magic, a kind of which he had never known before. A kind far more powerful than his own.
What kind of monster would do that to a family?
Mor'ranr woke up from his slumber in his Eldunari, sensing the mood of his once rider. A monster that is beyond our understanding, a monster that will only accept death.
Ret nodded his head, Then death is something I will happily give him. He walked as he was only able to follow the magic when he could take time to sense where it went.
Something burst out of the ground, grabbing Ret's foot and crushing it beneath it's fingers. Ret immediately sent tendrils of magic at it, twisting the hand so that it's fingers were bend back at an unnatural angle, and stepped back from where the ground disturbed. It was only a hand, but it was still alive!
What kind of magic can do this to a man!? Ret thought panicked. He didn't see the club of the other man behind him until it slammed into his head. It hurt to no end, but he wasn't unconscious.
Ret accessed the magic again, creating as much fire as he could in a circle around him. He was using his energy up quickly, but he couldn't afford to let it go just yet. He couldn't see and he couldn't stand. He inspected his hand as he brought it away from his head, seeing a smear of red but no hand. Everything was blurry. What was attacking him and from where? He wished he could see.

OOC: Thanks.

IC:
Voenth walked silently through the forest (I presume) toward the place where smoke had been seen by both he, and Bascth a day earlier. The elf walked at a relatively quick pace, not fast enough to be a run, but not slow enough to be a walk. The elf was in the area simply enjoying nature, when he had seen the fire, and both he and Bascth had felt duty bound to help whoever it was, though by this time, there were likely no survivors. The two came across an odd sigh when they saw a man bent over, close to the ashes of the home, with another man, who seemed to be swinging a club at the man. Voenth yelled, and the turned toward him and pointed, however he moved a few pacees away from the man on the ground. Then the man laughed evily. The elf did not care about the man, or whatever was wrong with it, only the man who was hurt. He said, "Let me help you, I am Voenth." said the elf as he was forced away from the man by the ring of fire.

Once they were close, Bascth said to Voenth, That man has an eldunari with him. I will try to make contact with it. Bascth placed his consciousness near that of the other eldunari in a very gentle way so as not to provoke a mental attack from the other and said, Brother, be still, I am Bascth previous dragon of Voenth before the forsworn killed my physical body. Let us help you, and your friend, something odd is happening here.

OOC: IDK what you want to do with the man, but if it is a physical man, let me know and I will edit.

OOC: Thank you.

Don't come closer! Mor'ranr warned Bascth, Ret is disorientated and cannot see straight, if he spots you before he comes to his senses he will kill you!

Ret kept the fire up for as long as he could, though the amount of energy it was draining from him was increasing. He couldn't tell if he was increasing the fire or what, things weren't straight, nothing was making sense. He knew he had to cut off the magic soon, but he couldn't tell how much energy he had expended or how much he had left. Things were swimming in his head, even the presence of Mor'ranr was blurred and distorted.

Voenth looked at the man on the ground and said it again. Then he looked at the man who had a large club in his hand. The elf drew Let'hjartha and said, "Back off ... NOW!" and looked at the man thrateningly. He held his rider's blade at the ready, he would not attack though, until either the man with the club attacked, or if he found out who had burned the home.

Bascth listened to the warning and warned Voenth, however the elf still stayed close to the man.

Post Re: Shadow of a man
Ret's world was spinning far too fast and far too erratically for Ret to be able to concentrate anymore. His stomach was threatening to show just what it had done to Ret's lunch and the magic was threatening to loose from Ret's grip. There was no telling what could happen if he held onto it while in this state.
Let go Ret, there are friends here who will help!
The words, they sounded familiar, the voice... his own? No. Mor'ranr.
Ret reluctantly let go of the magic, though the feeling of it leaving him was enough to make him lose control of his stomach. He retched on the ground, the fire dissipating into nothing but a ring of ash where the fire touched.
Kill him! Mor'ranr said to Bascth, He isn't human, kill him!

OOC: Do I actually kill him, or just try, and the man is the enemy throughout the story?

IC:
Bascth glowed faintly as Mor'ranr gave him the "go ahead". He said to Voenth, Use my strength and destroy that man. He is evil!

Voenth yelled angrily and leapt through the air at the man. He swunf Let'hjartha powerfully at the man's head in an attempt to behead the man, however, the man was stifter than Voenth had thought and he easilly dodged the sword. He laughed crazily and swung his club at Voenth. The elf only barely managed to stop the blow from hitting him with the full force, and was able to leave the eschange of attacks with only a large bruise on his chest. The elf panted. The fight was much tougher than he thought. He growled angrily and then drew Rathur'gata. He yelled once more and charged at the man.

OOC: He's not important, just the start-off point. I'll have Ret explain things to you in the next post.

Things began to clear up and he wished fervently he had the ability to heal with his magic. Mor'ranr and told him to learn it what seems like an eon ago, but he stubbornly refused saying that the words were all he needed to know.
Mor'ranr? He called out in his mind, the world beginning to make sense again.
Ret! Mor'ranr said happily, You're ok, the one that hit you will die soon. I hope... A feeling of uneasiness crept along their bond.

Voenth swung the blades, as if they were parts of his arms. He was swifter than most any other swordsman alive, however the man was blocking his every blow, then finally with one sharp crack! the man's club snapped in half due to the power behind the sword blows. Voenth then said, "I need your strength now Bascth!" and felt the strength of the eldunari flow through him. He yelled at the man who now had fear in his eyes. The elf then lost his control, but only momentarily. He charged the man and sliced his head off, as well as the man's arm, which was still holdign the broken handle of the club.

Ret started to stand but the dizziness that accompanied a concussion brought him back to his knees and made him purge what was left in his stomach. He had to admit though he felt better after that.
Can you understand me now Ret? Mor'ranr asked, keeping his mind open to sense the other two.
Yes... Just.
There is another person here with an Eldunari, I've made contact and asked for their help in killing the one that attacked you. Don't feel bad about it, he wasn't human and the hand that distracted you was moving by unnatural means.
I... understand. Ret had no clue what was going on.
You'll be fine, try talking. The man is called Voenth.
Ret started to speak, his throat still tender from the vomit. "Voenth... What do I owe you for this assistance?"

Voenth continued to breathe heavily as he allowed the lust of battle to recede from him. It seemed that every time he fought, it became harder and harder to come back into control, but he was still in control. He then, after a few moments of silence turned to the man and sheathed his blades. He said, "That depends are you the one who started the fire, or did he?" asked the elf indicating the man whose lifeless trunk was some four feet from its severed arm and head.

"I started the fire." Ret said, then shook his head and corrected himself, "I mean, the fire you just saw. As for what burned that house down, I didn't create it. I've been on the trail of some creature that has been slaughtering these people."
I think you should start from the beginning. Mor'ranr suggested.
"Yes." Ret's head was being assaulted by painful throbs as the shock of the blow left him. "It's difficult to think, but I'll explain what I can. I came across a small house several miles from here, it was empty. Inside, I felt a magic.. A perverted magic, something powerful, yet..." Ret said the only word he could think of when he felt the magic that day, "Evil.
"If I concentrated, I could feel the direction of where the magic came from and where it went. I set off after it, curious. Several days later, it came to a town. It was burning, the flames were old, but it was still burning. The perverted magic was strong, much stronger than it was at the house. I saw... People... Tearing each other apart with their own hands, tears running down their eyes as they screamed for help, some long past their time and still alive. I tried to undo the damage, but I couldn't figure out how, so I gave those people a mercy.
"Then I came across here, the perverted magic was strong in that man, but he was not the source. A ambush, or a warning, I wonder though?"

Voenth got a suprised expression when the man said "yes" however it left him once he saw that Ret, whose name he had learned frim Bascth thorough the man's eldunari. Voenth's face then was strained as Ret mentioned how the people were, for he had passed by, their dead bodies laying across the town and out into the fields. He said, "For anyone or anything to do something like that, it had to be evil. As to what you owe me, you owe nothing. I do not need payment for things I am suppost to do." said the elf as he offered Ret a hand to help him up. "It was probably a warning, but I am dutybound to try to find the evil being now, so whether warning, or ambush, I still follow the trail of death." said the elf.

"I owe you something for saving my life," Ret said, taking Voenth's helping hand. "I wouldn't have survived on my own. As for this being I'm following;" Ret concentrated, feeling the flows of magic around him, the residue in the air. All magic followed it's owner to some extent, he just had to find where it was going.
There, the perversion. Heading south.
"It's going south." He finally continued. "And I would appreciate the help." He would end up owing this man a lot more if things continued, he would pay off his debts. All of them. He thought to himself, thinking about Mor'ranr.

Voenth looked at Ret and said, "Fine, make sure that neither you, nor I die during this adventure then we will call it even." said the elf to the other man. He then asked, "When were you a rider? Also, if this "it" is going south. What could ti possibly be going toward. All evil has a purpose, if nothing more than to kill." said the elf as he placed Bascth back in the special sling that was part of his white cloak.

Ret looked towards the south, pondering the questions that should be known to nobody. "I was a rider in the days when humans were just added to the spell, though I was in the womb when that happened. My dragon died during the fall, though the one responsible managed to get away I held onto Mor'ranr."
He began walking then, following the trail inside his mind's eye. "I'll tell you the story if you wish, but on the way as this evil won't stop just for our sake. I would tell you where it was going if I knew." He looked back at Voenth, then the Bascth. "I have a question for you, were you a rider?"

Post Re: Shadow of a man
When Ret asked about his past, Voenth became silent. His face contorted slightly, and he looked distantly, Bascth, however was beyond such feelings, for during his time hidden from others, he had not forgiven his murdurers, but had simply let it go.

The eldunari glowed faintly as it touched the consciousness of both Ret, as well as Mor'ranr. It was not enough to sense more than the most basic of feelings, but with it, he told the story.

The air was hot from the flames of the dragons over Doru Areaba. The fighting had gone on al day, yet the forces were evenly matched. Voenth, Bascth, and the other elders were still busy hiding the eldunari who had not yet been stolen by Galbatorix and his twisted servants. One young rider, one of Voenth's former pupils ran inside and said, "Master Voenth, Bascth, they have broken through, they are coming this way." then screamed in pain as the dragon who he had left only momentarily met its end from a blow by one of the evil riders. The rider fell to the ground and died instantly. Voenth gritted his teeth as he looked at Bascth. Then, almost instantly, the two were hurtling out of the dragon hold toward the fighting. The forsworn were winning and several of the remaining riders who had not fallen to the blades of the evil fifteen riders were fleeing. Voenth looked at his friend and yelled to one of the forsworn. The four of them met with a loud crash in the air. The evil rider and his steed taking the majority of the damage, however the rider had been prepaired. The instant they collided, the man casted a powerful spell, which caused Voenth's, as well as Bascth's mind to be, at least slightly muddled. Then, another of the forsworn entered the fight. The four of them finally managed to force Voenth and Bascth onto the ground. It was then that they found themselves alone. The riders, as well as their dragons who were under Voenth's and Bascth's command were either dead, mad, or fleeing. It was time for their last stand. The riders and their dragons attacked with all their might and forced Voenth, and Bascth further and further back, despite the attempts of the elf and dragon to kill them. Finally, they were cornered. Voenth looked at his friend and saw the light in Bascth's eyes, then turned to their enemies. The elf yelled, but did not see a third rider and dragon coming in from behind. The two sunk their teeth, as well as sword into the back of Bascth's head. The dragon slowly sunk to the ground, as did Voenth. Then, all went black.

Then, was Voenth, sitting, or rocking back and forth in a cell in the darkness. There was a sound of grating metal, then the sound of steps. A tall man walked into the room. Voenth's wild eyes looked at the man and the elf said in a crazy tone, "You come to get me to talk do you? Well, you are wasting your time Galbatorix. I will refuse you the information of the location of the dearves, and elves as I refused you a second dragon. You will fall you demented man!" Then the vision went black.

Bascth's eldunari glowed again and the dragon said, I cannot show you more. Voenth has hidden the rest from even me and only he knows what happened to him. said the dragon.

Ret bowed his head in reverence. He knew the pain of such an encounter, though he swore he would never be a prisoner even if it killed him. "I am sorry, such a thing should never exist in the land."

OOC: Was that vague enough to not be a hinderance on teh book?

IC:
Voenth simply grunted at the man. His previous mood had been darkened by the evil of his past. He had no more happiness in him. He only wanted to walk on and try to get his mind on things other than his loss of Bascth and the evil and horrendous things that were done to him while at Uru'baen.

Bascth then asked, What is your story, Ret, Mor'ranr? We have told ours, what is yours? asked the eldunari as it glowed brightly from within the white cloak of the elf.

Post Re: Shadow of a man
OOC: It's fine.

"My story is similar, in that it has the same outcome." Ret opened his mind to the memories, every single one fresh in his memory as the day it happened. He swore he would never forget.

Ret was smiling, he had never smiled since, but that day he didn't want for anything. Mor'ranr sat next to him, breathing the air slowly, wings spread as if he would take off but firmly on the ground. The rocks held a wonderful breeze that cooled the day off nicely. Mor'ranr gave Retribution the peace he longed for, his namesake.
A chill went down Ret's spine, one that lingered for longer than a shiver should. It broke the peace that Ret felt at that moment and he stood, scanning the horizon. There, a speck approaching fast. Another rider.
Ret sighed and sat back down, he had nothing to fear from another rider.

The assault on his mind came so quickly he couldn't put up his defenses in time to stop the rider from stealing some of his power.
"What is the meaning of this?!" He screamed at the man, who drew his sword.
"Galbatorix will rule this land and he will make peace. Will you stand with us or against us?" He had his mind blocked.
"What!? This land is in peace already!"

Ret, his dragon is not himself. I can't remember his name even though I know I know it.
"I will not stand by while you disrupt the peace that is on this land!" Ret said with more force than he intended.
"Then die!" The rider assaulted his mind, throwing everything he could at it. He was strong, stronger than he should have been, even with Ret's power. All his strength and attention was at breaking into Ret's mind which formed it's own type of barrier. Ret had no choice but to respond in kind.
Meanwhile, Mor'ranr and the other dragon attacked each other ferociously, their claws running through each others scales. Occasionally the message came through that if Mor'ranr gave his Eldunari then the pain would stop and so would the assault on Ret's mind.
They fought for what seemed like an eternity, their minds locked in a struggle that wouldn't cease. Mor'ranr, who was tiring quickly while the other dragon still seemed fresh, was running out of strength to fight off his advances and the techniques that this dragon was using were far beyond him. Ret used the abilities he could that wouldn't result in both their deaths. Ret didn't have the strength to beat him, but neither did the other man have the strength to beat Ret. Both were locked within a stalemate. That was when the other dragon got the idea to attack Ret, to distract him and allow it's rider access into Ret's mind. As he approached Ret, Mor'ranr screamed and threw himself in the way, coughing up his Eldunari at the same time. As soon as the Eldunari left Mor'ranr's throat, the other dragon raked it's claws across Mor'ranr and gripped tight. Then snapped Mor'ranr's neck.
Feeling the life sap out of Mor'ranr, Ret finally snapped. He had had his family taken away, his entire life, and now that he had found a life again in Mor'ranr... He was gone too. Gone. Gone if he didn't kill this man and his dragon. He would take from this rider what was taken from him, Retribution would be served.
Ret threw himself into the magic, allowing it to fill him up entirely, he was nothing but a faucet for the anger that would be unleashed upon this man. This nameless man.
What did he care what spell he cast? As long as it killed this man, he didn't care what the retaliation was. He ripped a hole within the world, not caring where it went, as long as it went somewhere that he would never be found again. The portal opened up behind the man, who felt the massive use of magic and turned to look. Ret screamed rage and ran at the man, pushing the man into the portal with all his weight. He then used magic to grab the dragon and extract his revenge. He reached into the dragon, found the Eldunari it carried and ripped it out of the dragon through it's chest. The amount of magic he wielded was taking the life from him now, the heartbeat in his chest growing weaker by the second. With what strength he had he crushed the Eldunari within his hands and closed the portal. When he released the magic, he felt the drain on his body and fell to the ground, warmth filling his body though he knew it should have been cold as a corpse. His eyes wavered, the world becoming blurry when he saw a faint glow of light. He reached his hand towards it, his hand trembling along the way. The glow was warm, so warm.

Ret's hand wrapped around Mor'ranr's Eldunari, Mor'ranr pouring what energy he could spare to Ret to keep him alive. Ret breathed in, coughing blood. He clutched Mor'ranr tightly, welcoming the sensation that was his mind. This man had killed Mor'ranr for this gem. For Mor'ranr. He wasn't strong enough to protect him and he died under his care. He wanted to die himself, but Mor'ranr had saved him. He owed his dragon everything, but how could he repay that debt?
"I'll become stronger." He said to himself at last, his throat scratchy. "I will repay my debt to you, somehow."

When Ret was done with the story, he was surprised to find a tear on his cheek. "I know I can't save him, so I'll give us a death to be remembered." They had walked far, but the trail was still a further. No telling whether or not this evil would wait for them.

Voenth continued on, his face void of any emption, all except for the light in his eyes. It seemed to be dimmed. He managed a few words and said, I am sorry for your loss. Let us just hope that wherever that rider went, he does not come back. He sounds like trouble." said the elf as he continued on through that day.

OOC: Pass, sorry.

Post Re: Shadow of a man
"I don't care, he got what he had coming to him. He received the Retribution he deserved. He would have gone on to kill more riders and take their Eldunari." Ret spoke without emotion, his voice cold. Why should he care about a rider that betrayed his own people?
End this line of thought Ret, or it'll consume you. I forgive you for what you did, right or wrong. Mor'ranr piped up.
And I will see this creature brought to justice. Such evil cannot be allowed to live.

---- Time skip ----

The day wore on as they walked, Ret had to stop every now and then to find the trail once again, but they made good time. The sun was going down when they came to the next town, the shadows of the trees casting long shadows that seemed to reach for them. Ret suddenly felt cold, the sense of evil was much stronger here than all of the other places combined.
"Something's here. The magic has been perverted to a point where it quivers, your spells may be a little unpredictable." It seemed to vibrate as Ret reached for that part of his mind. He walked closer, expecting to see a town shattered. What he saw was people going about their business, all just regular. As both Ret and Voenth entered the city walls, all the people stopped and turned. It was obvious then, their eyes solid black.
"I gave you a warning." They spoke, the words seeming to be far off. "I don't know how you're following me, but stop or I will kill you."
Ret looked behind him, the villagers surrounding them. His disciplined mind formed a shell so focused that he saw nothing but his and Mor'ranr's mind and power.
"Show yourself." Ret said softly.

OOC: I'll tell the villain in the next post.

Voenth looked at the people, the blank looks on their face, then stared in frightened wonderment as the people all spoke as one and delivered the message. He looked at Ret and said, "I will not need any magic here, I will use my skill." sid the elf as he drew Let'Hjartha and Rathur'gata. He smiled and said, "The first one to make a move dies."

Don't do anything foolish Voenth, remember, our enemy could have any number of minions, or strength for that matter, be careful. said Bascth.

Post Re: Shadow of a man
"I said show yourself monster!" Ret finally screamed, magic coursing through his body.
"If you so want." A voice said from the shadows. He seemed to materialize from the shadows between the buildings and walked out in front of the two Indlevarn. He wore a cloak of black, his hair to his shoulders in a silvery blackness that both consumed the light and sent it straight back. On his waist he wore a sword that was curved sharply and had a glint blood on its surface. Or was that blood that had soaked into the blade? His eyes were solid black, with a glint of red. Ret could feel the pure evil that drifted from the man, if that was what he was.
"And just who are you?" Ret asked cautiously.

Nilarek just smiled, his sharp teeth shining in the darkness. "I am called Nilarek, though many just call me either monster or pure evil." He brought his hand up in front of his eyes, fiddling with something in his fingers. It shone bright and of different colors, a spirit.
"Now, since I have granted your request of revealing myself, I tell you once more; Stop following me or I will kill you."

"After all the suffering you have caused?!" Ret quivered with anger.
"Yes."
Ret looked at Voenth, wondering what it was he was thinking.

OOC: As EPIC RPGer, and you beign RPG Team Head, I now, whether it is true or not say, "Voenth has fought Nilarek!" there, now its officially official, lol.

IC:
Voenth gasped when he saw Nilarek. His face contorted into an angry snarl and said, "Hah! You will kill me, it did not work the last time you said that, and well, it never worked with Keralin did it you sorry excuse for a shade!" said the elf angrily as he tightened his grip Let'Hjartha and Rathru'Gata. He was ready for a fight with the evil shade, and if he could, would rid the world of the monster for good. His eyes locked with Nilarek and Voenth said, "Go on, I dare you, I am not the elf you once fought. I have learned more, I have learned the secrets of the Deep Magic."

Bascth glowed blindingly bright when Voenth said that it was Nilarek. He said, Voenth! Do not tell him any more, if he finds out, he will go after Eschelon and if Eschelon loses, one of the most powerful weapons in all the world will be under his power!

Post Re: Shadow of a man
OOC: Lol, I accept that statement as the Head of RPG Team. Now, where were we?

Nilarek bore the insults of the mortal in front of him with what dignity he could muster. It was unfortunate that he was speaking the truth, but then he revealed something. "Deep magic now?" Nilarek said interested. "I know my failures, those being that I was much less... Informed. I think I will fight you, I must know your Deep magic. Minions, enjoy the new spirits I give to you now." Nilarek extended his arms and raised his head to the skies. From him, fourteen spirits, all colored black, sprang forth and entered fourteen different townspeople. The change was instantaneous, their hair turned pitch black and their skin turned pale.
When it was done, Nilarek sank to the ground and lifted himself up again. "The rest of you, I need more."

Ret felt the perversion of magic from each of the spirits and felt even more of the Shadow Energy that Nilarek now channeled. He was calling something, though Ret couldn't tell what. The fourteen shades then came running at Voenth and Ret.
"I will kill you for what you've done." He said to himself, a promise. "Voenth, let's show him how strong we truly are."
Ret drew upon the flow of magic, streaming it into his body and out via the silent spells he had trained himself to cast. One Shade instantly exploded, the forces keeping it together broken.

Voenth smiled at Ret and said, "With pleasure." and began to silently move toward the remaining shades. He moved with all the grace of his kind and was nigh untouchable as he danced past the blades and blows of his enemies. He sneered at their futile attempts to harm him, but cursed when he realized that he had become overconfident. One of the shades had managed to cut through his chain mail on the back of his arm, and hot blood now stained his stark white cloak. He sneered angrily and ran the unlucky shade through with Let'hjartha.

Post Re: Shadow of a man
The people of the town were chanting now, the flow of magic coursing through them all, calling. When the first bright colored speck appeared on the horizon, Ret knew what it was that he was calling. He wished he was good with a sword, then pushed the thoughts aside as he scorched another shade to a crisp and moved to avoid being slashed by their claws.
"Spirits are coming! He's calling for more!" Ret called to Voenth, absorbed within his own battle. That was when Ret came up with an idea.
He reached his magic into one of the shades and gripped it's heart tightly, then pulled it from the shade's chest.

Nilarek was losing Shades, he didn't have much time. He seriously underestimated the two, the balding half-human with his magical power and the Elf. Shades had their uses, but the corruption required to turn them was tricky. Maybe he could even the playing field while waiting?
Shades, use your power to hold yourself off the ground.
He turned his corrupted power to the ground, forcing it to shake. Hopefully that would throw them off.

Voenth was knocked to the ground when it began to shake and move underneath him. He cursed his foolishness, and then stood up, albeit wobbly. He looked at Nilarek and casted a powerful spell of hiw own. The fire caused by the magic wound its way through the shades and went straight toward the shade. It was time for him to die! Then the elf turned his attention to the remaining nine shades. He yelled and leapt upon one, tackling it to the ground, but the shade was as strong as the elf, they began to wrestle along the ground.

Nilarek saw the ball of fire coming towards him and realized that his own attack had left him without a method of dodging. He braced himself for the hit and hoped that the attack wouldn't destroy his body as he hated needing to reassemble himself. The fireball hit him squarely, the fire melting over his body and frying his flesh....
But he survived. He could continue to fight with a damaged body, but the fact that the Elf had actually hit him was infuriating. Not to mention he lost control of the spell.

Ret kept himself moving quickly with the aid of magic, wishing once again that he carried a sword. He wove hid magic around the heart of another shade, tearing it out of it's chest. Unfortunately the shade disappeared and reappeared not far from where they fought. He had to be rid of these shades without losing too much of his energy, Nilarek still stood.

Voenth smirked at the shade as the trembling of the earth stopped and his fire hit the shade and caused obvious pain. However, his satisfaction was short lived as he was hurled by the powerful arms of one of the lesser shades into the nearest house, and nearly through the wall. The elf stood up shakily and managed to gain his balance after a second or two. He glared at the shade and began to hobble toward it. The shade grinned evily at Voenth, knowing that he had hurt the elf pretty badly when he had thrown it into the wall. The shade began to advance, its naked blade gleaming dully in the sunshine.

Post Re: Shadow of a man
While Ret dodged, Mor'ranr thought and supplied strength. Ret, instead go for the spirits inside the shade.
Ret heard and gave it a try, sending out tendrils of magic to the Shade which swung it's clawed hand at Ret's face. He seized the Spirit inhabiting the poor man and tugged at the magical bonds which kept it bound.
There, something in the corner of his thoughts, something that warned him to cut off the magic immediately. Ret ignored it, focusing on killing this shade some way or the other. A chill went down the cord of magic before Ret saw what was about to happen. Ret saw the darkness wrap around his magic and slide it's way towards him. He cut off the magic as quickly as he could, the darkness stopping as it hit the gap between itself and Ret. Ret saw the last mental attack the darkness tried to throw at him, a small speck of darkness that consumed itself within flight, heading straight for his mind. Ret then did something he hadn't done in years, force the magic to obey his commands.
The magic coalesced in front of the speck, pushing the speck away from him. The reaction of that much magic in the world in which they stood, exploded outwards violently and left the air cackling with energy. Ret and the shade that stood next to him were thrown as easily as spears and nearly as far.

Nilarek, while healing himself, watched the fight between the shades and the two mortals. He smiled at the fact that Voenth was getting the punishment he deserved for stranding against him. His eyes flickered over to Ret and the Shade attacking him in time to see the Shade swipe at Ret then, almost immediately, explode away from each other. Nilarek could easily feel the ripples of magic from that explosion, he would have bet that the lowest spell caster would have felt it, which meant that that explosion was one of pure magic. Nilarek suddenly felt fear, that human wasn't one to be taken lightly.

Voenth continued to walk/stumble toward the dark being, when the lesser shade seemingly dissappeared, however this was not so. It was simply using its super-human speed to try to kill the elf. Voenth however was a experienced fighter and was ready for the slash at an instant. He parried the blade of the shade and swung his own blades which only sliced through air as the shade had sped away out of blade range. The shade sneered at Voenth and laughingly said, "I am far too fast for you. My bretherin and I all have our specialties, and mine is speed." Voenth only laughed and said, "That is funny because, your speed will mean nothing if you cannot run." then casted a spell that Bascth had been storing energy for. The shade's arms and legs were clamped tightly to its sides. Voenth then ran forward and skewered the shade on Let'Hjartha. He said, "Back to the depths with you, monster."

Post Re: Shadow of a man
This one needs further planning. Nilarek thought, the amount of energy released from the tiny blast still sending ripples through the fabric of magic. Luckily for him, the spirits that the townspeople had called had finally come. As the spirits were trapped within the people who had called them, Nilarek took a few of them for himself.
"I underestimated both of you, but next time I will kill you." With that, Nilarek began his transformation into pure shadow and before long was shooting away at speeds unknown. The other Shades moving off to follow in his wake. They gave one last look at the two warriors before stalking off.

Ret struggled to rise, the amount of energy required to cast a spell of that magnitude had taken most of his strength.
Take my strength, Nilarek is gone and you do not need my strength to help defeat him now. Mor'ranr said, giving Ret everything he had. The rush of energy into Ret caught him by surprise, but it came just in time as the second Shade brought it's claw down into the dirt near Ret's face. Ret rolled twice before coming to his feet, using magic to help balance him.
"That's it, I've had enough of this toying around!" Ret pulled the dirt from under his feet, pushing it together until it was harder than most steel and pushed it through the nearest Shade's heart. The Shade convulsed once before bursting, the Shade finally defeated.
Six more. I just need to hold out for that long.

Voenth's words suddenly turned to a growl as the elf morphed into a large silverfurred wolf. He howled powerfully and took off after the remaining shades. He leapt into the air and onto one of the shades, but it managed to free itself by blocking Voenth's vision with its hands as the wolf went for its heart. Voenth growled and then whimpered in pain as the bladeof the shade cut into his side. Blood poured from his side, staining his bright silver fur a deep crimson. The blade had gone to the bone and Voenth howled in pain.

Post Re: Shadow of a man
Ret heard the scream from Voenth, adrenaline now pumping through his body. He knew the wolf to be Voenth because of the familiar resonance of his magic, he had to do something to help him, help them all.
"Enough!" He dug deep, fueling the spell that would definitely eradicate them all but leave him drained once again.
The ground shook as he compressed it into a near-diamond hard substance and formed a spear smaller than a stick. It used up most of his energy, but the next part would use near nothing. He erupted it from the ground into the heart of the closest shade, then the next and the next until there were only two left. The one attacking Voenth and the one that tried to run.
Ret pulled the spear from the ground and held it in his hand, it shone like the scales of a dragon and had a malevolence around it. He then threw the spear and, guided by magic, struck the last shade in the chest. The Shade was pinned the the ground for a moment before finally dissipating. Ret collapsed to the ground, all his energy spent as well as Mor'ranr's. He breathed heavily, finding it hard to keep his eyes open.
"It's all you now." He whispered before falling to the ground unconscious.

Voenth growled and finished the shade with a powerful bite to its chest, which punctured its heart. He limped over to Ret and growled, using his mind to communicate with Mor'ranr and Bascth. He said, We are safe for now, use your minds to find the closest place where we can rest in peace, and where I can heal this cut. It isn't deadly, but hurts like hell. So, can you two do that?

Post Re: Shadow of a man
Sure thing. Mor'ranr said before searching out with his mind, trying to find a place where no being would harm them. There was nothing around though, Nilarek had taken all the life from the area and the only place that had any shelter was the town. Mor'ranr still didn't like the feel of it, the twisted energies lingering.
All I see is death, if there are any trees or caves around, I can't see them. I'm sorry. Mor'ranr hated being useless, which he felt more and more of each day since losing his body. I can wake Ret, but he will be intensely weak. Not much more than a normal human with no training. Mor'ranr fed what little energy he had left into Ret, his Eldunari growing dark. He left a message with the energy, telling Ret what had transpired.
Ret suddenly breathed in deeply, coughing from the dust that drifted into his throat when he fell. He saw a wolf standing over him when he awoke and was about to run when he realized who it was.
"Voenth." His voice was raspy, coming in jagged breaths. "Mor'ranr filled me in." He pointed to a group of trees behind them. "Those trees. They may be dead and falling to pieces, but it's the safest place that's around here." Ret stood clumsily to his feet, swaying slightly as he rose to full height. "Let's go." He said, walking towards the only shelter available.

Voenth growled and began to weakly pull Ret toward the trees. He whimpered as the stray bush, or limb prushed against the cut across his side, however he was afraid to morph back into his elf form, for fear that a wound that was not so serious as it was painful, could be worse to an elf. When they arrived, Voenth moved to the other side of the grove and curled up to fall asleep. He left Ret on the other side and said, Try to go to sleep, I am going to do the same. When I wake, I wil try to morph back and heal myself, until then we should lay low, especially with youas tired as you are and me weakened from my bloodloss. said the wolf as he rolled the wound in some thick mud to stop most of the bleeding.

"I don't think I could stay awake even if I wanted to." Ret said, sitting down heavily on the ground beside a tree. He took out a skin of water and took a large drink before offering some to Voenth. "Just water, nothing special."

OOC: Aight, I didn't have much planned for this part anyway.

After Ret didn't get a response from Voenth he packed away his water and fell asleep, his body aching.

--Time Skip--

The next morning was pure agony as Ret woke to the protests of his limbs. Any amount of movement hurt beyond belief and the pain in his mind equaled it. He hadn't used pure magic in a long time and always regretted summoning it, it used far too much of his energy. He reached into his backpack and pulled out several rations of food, dried meat and a few spiced fruits. His stomach welcomed the food.
He looked over at Voenth, wondering if the wolf version ate fruit as well. "I've got plenty if you want some." He said, opening his pack to reveal nothing but food.

Voenth growled as Ret's movements woke him up. He stood up and stretched, much in the same fasion as a cat, and whimpered as the cut on his side re-opened some. He growled again as he morphed back into an elf. He said, "Thanks, I would love some fruit." said the elf as he casted a small spell to close the wound on his side. He was tired, and very sore, but no longer bleeding, things were looking up.

Ret looked at Voenth as he closed the wound in his side, watching the magic flow. He knew the words, even spoke them on occasion, but he could never get a wound to heal, no matter how much energy he threw into the spell. He shook his head of the thought and continued eating. There would be a lot of traveling today, though it would be slow. He had a strange sensation then, he had no idea what it was, though he knew what it portend. He kept the feeling from Mor'ranr.
"Voenth, when did you first learn you ability?" He asked before taking a gulp of water from his water-skin.

Voenth looked at Ret and thought back to the first time he used magic. "It was cold outside, I and my master for the day were high in the mountains on Doru Areaba. My master had been having me to dig a tunnel, straight through the mountain with nothing but a chizel and a mallet. I was tired, and despite the cold, I was sweating as if it were the middle of summer. I finally cursed loudly, using one of the words I had heard, and suddenly a rumbling deep within the earth was heard, then louder and louder, until a small hole was created in the mountain. Then my master took me to the elders. I was twelve years old. It was odd for an elf not to be using magic any earlier than that, but that was the first time I used magic of my own will." said the elf.

"How different..." Ret said softly, thinking upon his own past. "Well, if you feel up to it, we should begin moving. Slowly though, we won't be much good if we're still tired when we confront Nilarek again." Ret stood up slowly, looking off in the direction of the town, now silent. "I'd like to go around the town if you don't mind, I don't think I could go through it again."

Voenth pulled himself to his feet. The magic he had used left him slightly dizzy, but he would be ok. He said, "Lets be on our way then. We are losing daylight, and will need to be to some better cover by nightfall. We need to keep moving, especially since one like Nilarek will have sent someone, or something back to see where and how well off we are. He is not one to let an enemy hunt him, he typically does the hunting." said the elf as he stretched his sore muscles. He was going to be a very ... eventful walk in the least.

Ret nodded. This creature was powerful, maybe more powerful that he was, but he had made a grave mistake in attacking him. As soon as they were on the other side of the town, Ret reached out his mind again to search for the taint that followed Nilarek. When he found it, he began walking without a word, though he did keep an eye on Voenth to see if he was keeping up. A wound like that was sure to take it's toll.
He decided to make small talk to pass the time.
"How many innocents do you think you have killed? I don't mean people who were going about their lives, but just people that stood in your way." Ret realized just how bad at small talk he was after he spoke those words.

Voenth looked at Ret with an odd look and said, "I have killed none. I have only killed those soldiers who posed a threat to me, my friends, and my loved ones. I have never simply killed to kill and as a previous rider you should know better than to do such if you really have. That is a crime worthy of death." said the elf as he looked into the eyes of Ret. He instantly felt his hand going toward Let'hjartha. He could not help feeling apprehensive about this Ret.

Ret looked at Voenth as his hand went to his chest. "You misunderstand me. I meant those soldiers you have killed, the ones that fight for a cause they do not truly understand. Or even those that could have been saved. Or even those......" Ret reached towards his heart, of his pain long remembered. "I never killed for the sake of killing, though I still deserve my fate. I have deserved my fate since birth, and when my punishment comes, I will meet it with open arms."
Mor'ranr awoke to the darkness of his rider's thoughts. He had tried once before to change his rider's mind, but that ended in such failure that he had never sought to try and change it again.

Voenth then felt somewhat sobered. He looked at Ret and said, "I have killed many, thousands in fact. Some wanted only to go home to their children and families. However in this war the innocent do die. I do not wish to kill like I do, but I do wish to defend myself and my friends. I fight not only for me, but for my family, friends, and beliefs. I long ago gave up on mercy. Mercy and pity caused us not to have see the evil of Galbatorix back when we had the chance to stop him from coming to power. There is no room for mercy anymore. We must be a brutal as our enemy just to survive." Said the elf sadly.
