Galbatorix's True Personality
The person who has been half-heartedly characterized as the villain since the beginning of the series. However, we have never actually seen Galbatorix or heard his thoughts. Years of isolation and misunderstanding have left Galbatorix alone since the very start. Can this antagonist actually be different than he was originally portrayed? I think so.
I think it'd be good if Paolini gave POVs from Galbatorix, displaying Galbatorix's true pain of seclusion. Surely the King cannot be as bad as most say he is.

Re: Galbatorix's True Personality
He's a meany.
Actually he's probably insane and still believes that he was right in destroying the riders. He seems like the kind of villain who believes he is in the right.

Re: Galbatorix's True Personality
Then again, that's just what he sounds like from the point of view of the "Good Guys" so, since we've never actually heard from him, then of course he's going to seem bad because it's only the people who are against him that are telling us anything about him, therefore any information we're going to hear is doomed from the beginning to be bad.
I do, however, think that Galby was right to get rid of the riders. He didn't go about it in the right way, but he was right to do it. The riders, the elves...eh...they're basically all of them a bunch of overly-empowered people with inflated heads. Nobody should have the amount of power that's bestowed on them, and all for no apparent reason. I mean, they weren't improving all of humanity, and in the process of improving themselves, they lost their humanity, became more than they should have.
I don't find Galby to be more or less evil than any other sort of medieval ruler; to me he just seems a little insane, and a lot confused. I think he had good intentions, that sort of spiraled until he couldn't really get a handle on them anymore. He doesn't give off malicious vibes at all.

Re: Galbatorix's True Personality
I'm pretty sure that getting rid of the riders was cruel and selfish no matter how he could have done it because killing them is the only way. You can't make them stop being riders by telling them too and he certainly was not skilled to somehow magically take it away from them. And we don't really know how everything was when the riders were in power. Yes, they may have been a little stuck up but they knew what they were doing. The whole reason they exist is to keep peace and it was fine until Galby went crazy.

Re: Galbatorix's True Personality
Even Brom said that the Riders were corrupt. I doubt they were doing their job when a single Rider can start a rebellion and kill most of the Order within such a short timespan. The Riders were arrogant, and while they didn't deserve to be killed because of it, their political power certainly needed to be readjusted.

Re: Galbatorix's True Personality
Exactly; plus Galbatorix doesn't come across as sain anyways, and he's never had a chance to speak for himself. How can something with, thus far, no voice be judged as truly evil? The others didn't deserve to die, not at all, but, Galbatorix isn't evil because of that. The means were not, by any extent, just, but he was right in his intentions.

Re: Galbatorix's True Personality
Truly, the only thing I think is wrong with him is that he cannot emphasize with the pain of others. He has no sympathy, so he does what he wants, even though it hurts others.
